To Boulder Weekly’s readers and supporters and the entire Boulder County community:

As

Boulder Weekly founder and publisher it is my pleasure this week to continue the New Year tradition of sharing with you some highlights from the past year at Boulder County’s True Independent Voice.

The year 2010 marked the beginning of Boulder Weekly’s eighteenth year, and much like an individual reaching adulthood our organization seems to have reached a level of maturity that is commensurate with a “coming of age.” And as the “parent” of a “child” that has come of age I couldn’t be more proud.

The Boulder Weekly circulation truck that emerged this year, adorned with the numerous brands that comprise our organization — Best of Boulder, Student Guide, Boulderganic, Winter Scene, Summer Scene, BoulderWeekly.com and, of course, Boulder Weekly — serves as a metaphor for how our organization has come to represent the beauty, uniqueness and spirit of the Boulder County community.

But behind the fun and playfulness represented by this image there is serious work afoot to make a difference in a world that seems to be increasingly troubled.

And the year 2010 marked a very Boulder Weekly-esque achievement in this regard with the passing of State Senate Bill 193, aka the “Shackling Bill.” Early in 2010, our editorial staff discovered that pregnant Colorado inmates were being kept chained to their beds during labor, a practice that we considered to be barbaric, inhumane and potentially dangerous.

After investigating and exposing this statewide practice, Boulder Weekly Editor Pamela White collaborated with Sen. Evie Hudak, D-Westminster, in drafting and bringing to fruition a new law that went into effect Jan. 1, 2011, and forever prevents female prisoners from being subjected to giving birth in shackles.

Recognizing that an increasing number of readers receive information from online sources, we launched a retooled version of BoulderWeekly.com toward the end of 2009 with the intention of transforming our identity from that of a “weekly newspaper” to a “media organization with a daily online edition and a weekly print edition.” This became especially relevant during the recent Fourmile

Fire, during which our editorial staff worked around the clock to provide moment-by-moment updates. The response to our new website has been overwhelming, as the number of visitors to BoulderWeekly.com has more than tripled during the past year.

We live in a colorful world in which style and image matter, especially in the media. With this in mind, in 2010 Boulder Weekly abandoned the traditional, drab black-and-white look of a newspaper (remember the old riddle: What is black and white and read all over?) and converted our 100 percent recycled, soy ink print edition to all color. This transition, which involved the deepening of our partnerships with our advertisers — most of which elected to take advantage of our new look to give their ads the added appeal of full color — served to continue our efforts to blaze trails in the print media world as the Newspaper of the Future.

In our eternal quest to provide increasing quantities of relevant information to the community, Boulder Weekly added two notable editions last year: Boulderganic and Winter Scene. While officially launched in 2009, the response to Boulderganic — Boulder County’s guide to living green, supporting local choices and creating a sustainable future — was so positive that what was originally envisioned as an annual publication became a tri-annual (spring, summer and fall) in 2010, as well as a significant online resource at Boulderganic.com. And to complement our very successful longstanding annual Summer Scene edition, Boulder Weekly launched a brand new publication: Winter Scene — a resource for winter adventure.

Amid all the work, we managed to have some serious fun at two new community events that were launched in 2010. The first was our First Annual Best of Boulder Awards Ceremony, which was held at the Boulder Draft House in April. The event was so well attended that there was barely room for the award-winners to make their way to the stage to receive their framed Best of Boulder certificates, and we are already planning to hold the 2011 event at a larger venue. And then there was our First Annual Back-To-School Bash, which welcomed back CU students with three local bands at the Fox Theatre.

Last but not least, 2010 marked the fourth consecutive year that the Boulder Weekly operation grew in size and revenue.

We added two new full-time positions and enjoyed a whopping 15 percent increase in revenue. We are especially proud to have experienced continued growth during a recessionary period, particularly while so many media organizations are reducing staff, selling property and consolidating as a means of survival.

As we move into another year — indeed, another decade — I want to renew my commitment to the community we serve. You can count on Boulder Weekly to continue to expose injustice and illuminate truth, regardless of the immediate impact on our bottom line. Because that’s what true media organizations do. And for a decidedly progressive media organization, we just happen to be kind of old-fashioned when it comes to doing our job. I want to acknowledge and express my appreciation for your support and participation. Body artists targeted During this time of recession/depression, many cities, counties and states are broke, too. It has become evident that Boulder County Public Health Department (BCPHD) is using body art businesses as a cash cow to supplement revenue. Body artists are not wealthy people and have little recourse to “fight the system.” Many businesses will struggle to pay $1,000-plus per annum for a body art business license. Financially ruining people equals no revenue for BCPHD. That’s a no-brainer.

Inspections per year went from two to one. Does this reflect a problem with communicable diseases and public health concerns? BCPHD failed to produce an epidemiology report to prove the need for stringent regulations and fees. Scratchers who operate out of their home, however, are a huge problem. They don’t care nor know about protecting the public. So, BCPHD, go after them! That would benefit the public.

BCPHD wants you to be afraid of getting a tattoo. The body art page of the BCPHD website has a picture of a tattooed arm sporting an outbreak of Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). The article focuses on jailhouse tattoos, and the tattoo wasn’t even done in Colorado. BCPHD wants you to look at the picture, assume it is some poor guy who was infected with MRSA in Boulder County and think, “Wow … good that the health depart-

ment is on top of that!” To be fair, then place a picture of diarrhea on the BCPHD restaurant webpage with a caption that reads, “This could happen to you if you eat out!” Despite the request from 20-plus body artists, BCPHD will

It’s a story about Rick Perry, the splendidly coiffed Republican governor of Texas, but it’s really about how corporations, corporate-funded right-wing organizations and corporate-backed politicians happily hum kumbaya together.

In December, Perry gave another of his rants on how he hates Washington’s power elites. Ironically, his speech was in Washington — delivered to an appreciative audience of lobbyists and other Washington power elites.

Perry thinks irony is a county in Iran, so he missed the absurdity of it all.

AT&T, which sponsored the luncheon where the guv held forth, has beaucoup business before the Texas state government and is a half-million-dollar donor to Perry’s gubernatorial campaigns. They’re tight. So

of inside-Washington elites. ALEC is richly funded by such extremist laissezfaire corporate barons as the multibillionaire Koch brothers, who’re among the most elite players in Washington.

So, a corporate front group has a meeting in Washington, inviting the ambitious corporate-cozy Texas governor to strut his stuff at a lobbyistinfested lunch sponsored by his favor-seeking AT&T pals, who buy a bunch of his books, the proceeds of which go to another corporate front that backs Perry in exchange for him carrying their agenda. Everybody’s back gets scratched — and it’s all done in the guise of fighting power-hungry elites.

At least our “battle” has resulted in the development of a coalition of body artists in Boulder County. We all want to do body art for you, the public, and practice safely. We do want to partner with BCPHD to dismiss the “us-them” mentality and be of benefit to each other.

Public education by utilizing knowledgeable people in the industry is a start to keeping diseases under control. Put an end to the scratchers. Now that will really help. Micro-managing and charging outrageous fees results in lose-lose. That, for sure, will run people underground.

It is painfully evident that we as a people need to pay attention to what our people in positions of power and authority are doing on behalf of us. It isn’t all very pretty. Authority is not the truth.

Truth is the authority.

Wolf Wolfstar, Enchanted Ink, LLC/ Boulder Obama Derangement Syndrome (Re: “Ratifying START was insane,” Danish Plan, Dec. 30.) Paul Danish has ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome).

I disagree with most everything Paul Danish has to say in his weekly perspectives. Most of his positions are disagreeable to me on an intellectual and factual basis. However, his latest rant regarding the START treaty was as clear an example of ODS as I have seen, even close to the birther crazies. Let’s see, Paul Danish is against President Barack Obama signing the START treaty because … ?

Because he is Barack Obama and everything that Barack Obama is for, Paul Danish is against. Despite that fact, almost every Secretary of State in the past 40 years is for signing the treaty, including such notable lefties as Henry Kissinger, James Baker and the former Head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Colin Powell. Mr. Danish attempts to give reasons for his objections, too numerous to debunk here.

Needless to say, I would seek advice from the above-mentioned dignitaries as opposed to the rantings of a man who uses “insane” and “delusional” in his missives often enough to give one pause. I cannot and will not subscribe motive to Mr. Danish’s ODS. Only he knows what is in his heart. I will suggest that wherever Mr. Danish’s hatred for this president comes from, it is unbecoming to a man who was once a pillar of the Boulder community and has now been reduced to a laughingstock among many.

Good luck, GOP I’d like to begin the new year with congratulations to our Republican brethren in their victories in the 2010 elections. As we know, they have their work cut out for them, and Americans everywhere are anxious to see them succeed in solving our many problems. Good luck with all your ideas about cutting the spending and reducing the tax burden on us all.

Well, to be perfectly fair and balanced, the Republican Party hasn’t been exactly forthcoming in the idea department, and we will certainly hope that the Tea Party will be of assistance in helping Republicans make the hard choices that will placate the older voters who have been the recipients of Social Security, Medicare and the myriad of programs that have helped them make ends meet.

The Department of Defense will need attention, as well, and of course we can’t forget quality education of our most valuable resource, our children. Homeland Security will need to be addressed, and I have all the confidence in the world that our borders will be secure, as that in particular seemed to be one of the top priorities of both Republicans and the Tea Party. And to that, I say buena suerte.

And, by the way — no crying. It’s time to man up and work to solve problems. While talking tough and casting blame may have been the fun part of being the “Party of NO,” complaining and whining don’t feed the bulldog.

Tommy Holeman/Longmont The power of pop culture I knew it! I just knew it. ABC news aired a report on Dec. 8 that pointed out that American media, television in particular, and it’s almost ethereal and all encompassing “soft power” has had an effect on the average middle-class Arab.

That is to say that they’re much more positive about a lot of the images and stories we manufacture and that they see as reality, from David Letterman, et al., talking back/making fun of government and public leaders, to the independence and individual verve of the Desperate Housewives, which, if we think is exaggerated fantasy here, one can only imagine what must go through the minds of women in Third World countries upon seeing all of this, real or not.

This seems to reinforce my continued obsession with American “soft power” as being in the end what will win over those hearts and minds people talk so much about. FCC breaks Obama’s promise on net neutrality

n Dec. 21, the FCC passed new rules — written by corporations — that will end net neutrality. For the first time in history, the U.S. government approved corporate censorship of the Internet, putting the future of online free speech at risk. Unbelievably, the person leading the charge was Obama appointee Julius Genachowski (known in some circles as Judas GenaComcast for his historic sellout and notorious industry-friendly attitude).

These rules also violate President Obama’s campaign promise to protect net neutrality and appoint an FCC commissioner who would do the same, but some media are reporting the corporate spin that this is a “net neutrality compromise.” And the White House is trying to convince us this isn’t a sellout as well with their wholly supportive statements.

This is not a compromise, and it doesn’t fulfill Obama’s campaign promise — not even close. There’s no such thing as half a First Amendment and no such thing as prohibiting “some” corporate censorship. In reality, these rules are what Sen. Al Franken said they are.

“The FCC’s action … is simply inadequate to protect consumers or preserve the free and open Internet,”

Franken said. “I am particularly disappointed to learn that the order will not specifically ban paid prioritization, allowing big companies to pay for a fast lane on the Internet and abandoning the foundation of net neutrality. The rule also contains almost no protections for mobile broadband service, remaining silent on the blocking of content, applications and devices. Wireless technology is the future of the Internet, and for many rural Minnesotans, it’s often the only choice for broadband.”

Dec. 21 marked another historic sellout to big corporations by the Obama administration, not some kind of “win.” The record must be set straight.

Grant D. Cyrus/Boulder Farewell, Andrea’s On Jan. 1, we drove up to Lyons for our last lunch at Andrea’s Homestead Café. We had homemade cream of tomato soup, sauerbraten, spatzle, red cabbage and strudel. It was our last meal at Andrea’s because the restaurant will be changing hands this month and Andrea Liermann will be beginning a welldeserved retirement.

We figured that we have been coming to Andrea’s for delicious German food for more than 20 years. We often drove up on weekends to hear the live music at Andrea’s and to have prime rib on Saturdays. We especially remember Maria and Karl, who sadly have died in the past 10 years. Maria in a dirndl sang along as Karl in his lederhosen played his button box. We also enjoyed the entertainment provided by Jürgen, who played the spoons and bells and did a mean Schuhplattle, and Dieter, who sang and played his guitar.

Along with several Oktoberfest dinners, we celebrated a number of special occasions at Andrea’s, including birthdays and graduations, and we often brought out-of-town visitors to the restaurant.

The food was invariably delicious, especially those homemade soups and desserts. We got to know many members of the wait staff by name, and Andrea always greeted us warmly when we arrived.

We shall miss Andrea’s Homestead Café. It is the end of an era in Lyons, and we wish Andrea and her family all the best.

Fact: Almost all economists not on the government’s payroll agree that booms are a result of investors and citizens investing in the economy far more productively then government bureaucrats and that is done with, yes again, tax cuts.

When you get past the left’s deception, misdirection and outright lies about history and facts, you see that they have no interest in freedom and liberty or prosperity. They are in the total control, subversion and subjugation business. And that, too, is a fact!

City should fine itself When the Boulder City Council revamped the city’s snow removal ordinance last year, they spent a fair amount of time discussing how much time city residents should have following a snowfall to shovel their sidewalks before the city can bust them. They revisited the topic on Tuesday, Jan. 4, and that same issue came up again, with council members voting to give residents 24 hours after snow quits falling to shovel their walks.

It might have behooved City Council to spend just a little time working on a definition of what “snow removal” really means.

Carter Johnson, a Boulder resident, sent Boulder Weekly a link to a video he made of a significant stretch of sidewalk that showed what can only be described as shoddy snow removal. Though clearly someone had cleared most of the snow away, a layer that at times was more than an inch deep remained, the sidewalk not even visible. Worse, the snow had been shoveled into the crosswalk, leaving pedestrians to scramble over a drift almost a foot high. Not good.

Whose sidewalk was it? Why, it was the city’s! Yes, that expanse of poorly cleared sidewalk was the responsibility of the same folks who’ve put so much effort into our new snow removal ordinance.

So what does it mean, exactly, to “clear a sidewalk”? Based on the city’s example, you’re good to go if you only take a few inches off the top.

Scalia: Women, gays not equal under the law During an interview with California Lawyer, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia said that the equal protection clause of the 14th Amendment should not be used to protect against discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation.

“In 1868, when the 39th Congress was debating and ultimately proposing the 14th Amendment, I don’t think anybody would have thought that equal protection applied to sex discrimination, or certainly not to sexual orientation,” he told reporters. “So does that mean that we’ve gone off in error by applying the 14th Amendment to both? Yes, yes. Sorry, to tell you that.”

For Scalia, this isn’t just a philosophical conversation about the intentions of the 39th Congress. He was, after all, the only justice to vote against requiring the Virginia Military Institute to admit female students back in 1996 when that controversial case came before the Supremes. He truly believes what he’s saying.

Fortunately, Scalia is a relic and in the minority in his opinion. Equality is far too important an issue to leave up to the states. That’s why we have the 14th Amendment in the first place.

Go back to your cave, Tony. We can’t even take you seriously anymore.

Enterprise incident Captain Owen Honors is in the hot seat these days for a series of videos he made and distributed to his crew aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise when the aircraft carrier was deployed in the Middle East a few years back.

The videos, which originally didn’t raise hackles, include foul language, simulated masturbation, faceless images of female sailors pretending to shower together and what seem to be anti-gay slurs.

While some among Honors’ loyal crew defend their captain, saying that the videos were taken out of context — apparently there’s some context in which anti-gay slurs and pretending to jerk off in front of your staff is okay — Honors was removed from his command on Tuesday.

It’s good to see U.S. military brass taking these issues seriously, because Honors did not, not even when some among his crew complained.

“Over the years, I’ve gotten several complaints about inappropriate materials in these videos, never to me personally but, gutlessly, through other channels,” Captain Honors said in one video.

Honors and those who defend him argue he was keeping moral up during wartime. But aren’t there ways of keeping the crew’s spirits up without denigrating gays?

While sailors are traditionally associated with foul language and raunchiness — remember the expression “swear like a sailor”? — we’re past the age where a military leader can openly bash gays and get away with it.

More Fourmile meetings set Another series of community meetings has been scheduled to address post-fire issues and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the Fourmile Canyon wildfire.

Topics include land rehabilitation and re-vegetation, flood insurance and preparedness, and watershed protection and erosion control — specifically how Boulder County intends to use grant funding received for watershed rehabilitation.

The meetings will start informally at 6:30 p.m. for question-and-answer sessions with county staff, with the formal meetings beginning at 7 p.m.

Meetings will be held for each fire protection district: Fourmile on Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the Salina School House (536 Gold Run Rd.); Sugarloaf on Wednesday, Jan. 12, at Fire Station No. 2 (1360 Sugarloaf Rd.); Gold Hill on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Gold Hill Elementary School (890 Main St.); and Sunshine on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Fire Station No. 1 (311 County Road 83).

If any of the meetings are canceled due to snow, there will be a backup meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Sunshine Fire Station No. 1.

The county is also holding a meeting specifically for property owners and renters who lost a home and/or structure. It will be held on Thursday, Jan. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room on the third floor of the County Courthouse at 1325 Pearl St. in Boulder.

CU: Economic confidence on rise Colorado business leaders’ confidence has bounced back to pre-recession levels going into the first quarter of 2011, according to the most recent quarterly Leeds Business Confidence Index, or LBCI, released this week by the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Leeds School of Business.

For the first quarter of 2011, the LBCI posted a reading of 54.8 — just shy of the 54.9 registered in the second quarter of 2007 — up from 48.6 last quarter. Business leaders are optimistic about industry sales, profits, employ12 January 6, 2011

While the index overall is quite strong, certain components are much stronger than others, according to Leeds School economist and Business Research Division Director Richard Wobbekind, who conducts the quarterly survey. In particular, he said the expectations were extremely positive for sales and profits, but not as rosy for capital expenditures and hiring.

An index of 50 is neutral. An index greater than 50 indicates positive expectations, while an index lower than 50 indicates negative expectations.

Senior services offers Jazzercise The City of Boulder’s senior services started offering Jazzercise classes this week.

The classes are being held at the East Senior Center, 5660 Sioux Dr., from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The West Senior Center, at 909 Arapahoe Ave., will offer the classes

from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. on Wednesdays only.

A fee of $38 per month, payable to Jazzercise, will be charged for unlimited use of the classes at either location.

The nationwide program teaches dancing to music in a group appropriate for people who have some limitations on their movement or who have not been exercising regularly. Jazzercise is a fusion of jazz dance, resistance training, Pilates, yoga and kickboxing.

Did you pay your online sales tax?

f you spent more than $500 with a single online retailer during the past 10 months and didn’t pay state sales tax on the purchases, you may receive a mailing this month notifying you to cough it up.

A state law enacted last spring, HB 1193, applies to out-of-state online retailers with at least $100,000 of annual sales in Colorado that do not charge customers state sales tax. The law requires them to notify Colorado buyers of the sales tax they owe on purchases, if those purchases total more than $500 for the calendar year. The notification, which should include the dates, amounts and categories of each purchase made during 2010, must be sent via first-class mail by Jan. 31, or else the retailers can face fines.

Under the new law, Internet retailers are also required to submit a more general notice to the Colorado Department of Revenue by March 1, one that outlines the amount spent by each individual who bought more than $500 of goods online without paying state sales tax.

In what some say was a political statement, after the bill was signed into law, Amazon.com terminated the accounts of its Colorado-based “associates,” who until then had received a portion of sales to consumers who reached Amazon.com from the associates’ websites.

Department of Revenue spokesperson Mark Crouch acknowledges that some are concerned that the new law violates privacy rights, but he stresses that the notice to the state will not specify which products were bought. The notice will simply list the total amount spent, if in excess of $500, and it will be up to the consumer to decide what, if any, sales tax is owed on those purchases.

For example, online purchases of things like food and prescription drugs are not subject to state sales tax. Tangible personal property, on the other hand, is subject to the tax unless it is specifically exempted. Crouch notes that if a consumer bought $500 of food and $500 of books online, he or she would just owe the 2.9 percent sales tax on the books, and the state would never see that breakdown.

“We don’t know whether it’s $500 of peanut butter and $500 of books,” he says. “We just know it’s $1,000.”

Still, critics claim that even providing the state with the name of an online retailer where goods have been purchased can be incriminating. The Direct Marketing Association, a national trade group, filed suit against the state — specifically the executive director of the Department of Revenue — on June 30, claiming that the new law violates consumers’ privacy, discriminates against out-of-state retailers, infiltrates proprietary customer lists, exposes security risks and chills free speech.

Asked how the state will crack down on those who don’t pay their online sales tax, Crouch says, “We expect to fully enforce the law.”

But he adds that in reality, the cases that will raise eyebrows are those in which the consumer pays little or no taxes even though the amount reported to the state by the retailer is significant.

If $1,000 is reported by Amazon.com, and the purchaser pays nothing in taxes, “you will come to our attention,” he explains.

“If there is a big discrepancy, it would be a red flag,” Crouch says.

He adds that the department has no plans to add staff or resources to help enforce the new provisions.

Retailers will be fined $5 per customer for failing to provide notice of the tax requirement to consumers, and $10 per customer for failing to provide notice of the annual sales amount to the Department of Revenue. Since the bill went into effect on March 1 of last year, the new regulations apply only to purchases made in the last 10 months of 2010.

Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, recently told Boulder Weekly that the new law is one she would consider repealing if it hasn’t raised much sales tax revenue.

According to Crouch, Colorado residents who receive a notice from an online retailer and believe they owe state sales tax must fill out a Consumer Use Tax Return, Form BR0252.

Local lawmakers peek into state’s legislative future

hile Republicans have reclaimed control of the Colorado House for the first time in six years, Boulder County’s Democratic legislators say they are confident they can work with the other side of the aisle to address rancorous issues like budget cuts and redistricting.

Even though Republicans will outnumber Democrats by only one in the House when the new session starts on Jan. 12, that majority will be felt significantly in House committees, where Republicans will have the majority and many Democrat-sponsored bills may perish.

“I expect a number of my bills to die in committee,” Rep. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, D-Longmont, told Boulder Weekly. “I hope the Republicans play as fair as the Democrats did in the past five years. There were a lot of Republican bills that got out of committee.”

“Republicans are open and ready to work with Democrats in the House,” incoming House Speaker Frank McNulty, R-Highlands Ranch, told Boulder Weekly. “To the Republican chair and Republican members what will matter most is good public policy. … It won’t matter whether there is an R behind the name or a D behind the name.” Åsked whether Democrats treated Republican bills fairly in committees over the past six years, McNulty says, “I would say that to a large extent we were given a fair shake. I will also say that when I introduced bills, there were some that I knew would die, and they did.”

Left-leaning local lawmakers remain hopeful they can set partisan politics aside and find success with their agenda of creating jobs and stimulating the economy — not by cutting taxes, but by preserving as much funding for education as possible in the face of more looming budget reductions.

Then there will be the redistricting process. The last such effort ended in what Democrats call “the midnight gerrymander” of 2003. They claim Republicans took advantage of their majority to redraw districts in their favor. That plan was eventually thrown out by the Colorado Supreme Court. But in the following year’s election, in part due to financial support from a handful of wealthy Democratic donors upset by the Republicans’ redistricting effort, the Dems won enough races to take control of both houses of the Legislature, as well as the governor’s office.

In an effort to inject a conciliatory spirit into the upcoming negotiations over how new boundary lines will affect party numbers in each district, on Dec. 16 Senate President Brandon Shaffer, D-Longmont, and McNulty announced the creation of a joint committee charged with taking a first shot at redistricting — in a bipartisan way.

in the upcoming session and to hear about bills they plan to propose. **** Shaffer says the redistricting committee he and McNulty launched is a new effort to work together and “see if we can get it done without huge acrimony. …

We’re trying to avoid the midnight gerrymander.”

Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, adds, “The attempt is to not have us at a total impasse and screaming at each other.”

“I believe it gives us the best opportunity to pass a fair congressional district map that is passed by a Republican House and a Democratic Senate and signed by a Democratic governor,” McNulty says of the committee, adding that he doesn’t anticipate a repeat of 2003. “I don’t expect it to rise to that level. I’m not under any misconception that it won’t be a difficult process, but I hope it will take some of the heat out of one of the most partisan processes in the Legislature.”

Shaffer says the group won’t be officially formed until after the session convenes on Wednesday, but it will have an equal number of members from each party and will reflect geographic diversity.

Redistricting aside, Shaffer says the main theme of the 68th General Assembly is economic development and job creation, and one key to those is funding for education. To that end, he is proposing the creation of a “Prioritize Education First Fund” early in the session as a place to capture available money and use it to offset cuts in higher education, K-12 education and early childhood education. State agencies are undergoing audits to identify cost savings, Shaffer explains, and his plan is to put that money into the education fund.

Another piece of legislation Shaffer is proposing would create a state tax check-off to allow Colorado residents to donate to the Prioritize Education First Fund. **** Hullinghorst says having a redistricting committee collect input from around the state will help ensure transparency in the process.

“The last thing we want to do is draw this in some back room,” Hullinghorst says. “I don’t think we should be cutting deals early on.”

Since the results from the latest U.S. Census won’t be available until later this spring, she says, redistricting may not get settled during this session.

“My prediction is that, especially if there are tough budget issues, we will have to deal with it in a special session,” she says.

Hullinghorst is also considering a bill that would create a “lean government” effort for state agencies to save money and change bureaucratic processes to improve service. In addition, because Colorado ranks low in its recycling efforts, she is mulling legislation that would require municipalities with more than 25,000 people to keep figures on how much trash is

being diverted from landfills through recycling. There is also a proposal on her desk for a local improvement district in Niwot that would raise sales tax revenue for economic stimulation through promotions and events.

Democrats seem wary that some of the measures they passed last spring to eliminate tax breaks might be reversed by Republicans this year. Hullinghorst plans to introduce a bill that would require legislators to offset any tax cuts with an alternate source of revenue.

“We can’t do any more short-term budget killers,” she says.

McNulty agreed that while education is an important factor in job creation and economic recovery, there has to be some recognition that government has driven jobs away, and he says Republicans want to find common ground with the Democrats on tax breaks. **** Rep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, says she is open to reconsidering any of those tax breaks if Republicans can produce evidence that the removal of the tax breaks did not generate enough tax revenue or caused job losses.

Among her proposed bills is one intended to help victims of the Fourmile fire. Those who lost their homes in the blaze could be assessed at a higher tax rate because they no longer have a structure on the property, and Levy’s bill would tweak state law to let the county assessor maintain their residential tax assessment status for a two-year period rather than recategorizing their properties as vacant land.

Other bills Levy plans to introduce include one that would allow behavioral health and addiction treatment professionals to administer a specific acupunctural ear treatment that has proven effective, and one that would allow juveniles tried as adults for first-degree murder and currently serving a life sentence without parole to be eligible for transfer to a community correction facility (like a halfway house) after 20 years if they meet certain criteria. She is also considering legislation to place approval of the placement of electric transmission lines into the hands of the state instead of cities and counties, in an effort to streamline Colorado’s ability to implement green-energy initiatives. **** Heath is all about fiscal policy issues. He sponsored a resolution last spring calling for a study on the state’s tax structure, a study that the University of Denver is winding up later this month. Heath says it’s clear the state is “on a path to nowhere” in funding things like education and transportation, and the question is how far Colorado residents are willing to go to raise state revenue. Possibilities include a slight boost to state income tax or sales tax, he says.

Levy defends marijuana DUI bill

ep. Claire Levy, D-Boulder, says she has received loads of e-mail about her proposed bill to create a statutory limit for driving under the influence of marijuana.

Similar to the 0.8 percent blood-alcohol content used to charge drunk drivers, the limit would be based on cannabis content, and those found to have more than 5 nanograms of THC per milliliter of whole blood could be charged with a DUI. Levy says the feedback she has received on the bill has been pretty evenly split, but she wants her detractors to know she supports the decriminalization of marijuana. She feels society should be more tolerant of the drug, and she even acknowledges using marijuana in the past. The intent of the bill, she says, is to keep roads safe and to clear up what is now a gray area in law enforcement, as more and more people use pot under the state’s medical marijuana laws and drive under its influence.

Currently, she says, a driver can be charged with a drug-related DUI — whether it’s pot or Percocet — based on factors like behavior, a roadside sobriety test and traces of drugs found in a blood sample. But there is no state law on what trace of THC is too high, leaving it up to the discretion of law enforcement.

Levy says she wants to make it clear what that limit is, and she is convinced that 5 nanograms is not a threshold that is too low. She has heard concerns from regular marijuana users who claim their high tolerance may make them easy targets under the proposed law. But she says marijuana doesn’t stay in your system for days; after ingested, it spikes, but 90 percent of it is gone from the bloodstream within about three hours, according to Levy.

She says the bill would require law enforcement to draw blood within two hours if they suspect that someone is driving under the influence of marijuana.

Rep. Deb Gardner, D-Longmont, who is taking over Jack Pommer’s seat, says she is drafting a bill that would encourage local companies to use locally recycled material to create their products. She is also considering legislation to create a “Blue Alert” system, similar to the “Amber Alert,” aimed at notifying the public when a law enforcement officer sustains a life-threatening injury from a suspect still at large, in an effort to apprehend such perpetrators faster.

As an accountant and an incoming member of the Legislative Audit Committee, Gardner also says she is looking forward to keeping state agencies efficient, effective and accountable.

Rep. Matt Jones, D-Louisville, who is succeeding Paul Weissmann in House District 12, says he plans to uphold a Boulder Weekly

campaign promise by introducing a ClimateSmart-related bill that would extend the Property Assessed Clean Energy (PACE) program to small businesses. The initiative would allow small businesses to access a loan pool for energy-efficiency improvements to their facilities. Payments on the loan would be made with property tax, so that the loan stays with the property, not the individual. (Boulder County had operated a similar program for residences until recently; Jones says his proposal would not run into the same roadblocks that the residential program encountered.)

Jones is also mulling legislation to make it easier for residents to charge their electric cars with solar power. He says current limits on the amount of electricity that can be generated from residential solar systems make car-charging an expensive and cumbersome process.

“I think it should be the policy of our state that we support using solar energy to power electric cars, because otherwise it’s a coal car,” Jones explains.

But he is quick to add that this bill may face an uphill battle in the House Agricultural, Livestock and Natural Resources Committee.

In that committee, Jones says, Dems are outnumbered by Republicans who are particularly conservative.

4-H: It’s not just for farm kids anymore

A

lthough most of my life was spent in a California valley where the term “agribusiness” was coined, I didn’t live on a farm and I assumed that the 4-H organization was only for kids who did.

A pretty common assumption, given that 4-H (which stands for Head, Heart, Hands, Health) evolved around the turn of the 20th century as a movement to make public education more relevant for rural residents.

The organization doesn’t advertise much, so the most familiar public association is often that of 4-H youngsters exhibiting their handraised livestock and homemade jams at the county fair.

But as I’ve since learned, 4-H has evolved into a modern take on community sustainability that today claims more than 6.5 million members in the United States alone (4-H is also active in 70 other countries).

It’s still an organization devoted to shaping a better future for tomorrow’s adults and encouraging community service. However, today’s members, mostly between ages 9 and 19, are as likely to come from the city as the country. The “learn by doing” adage has spawned a wide range of clubs within 4-H that focus on whatever “projects” the members are interested in, from agriculture to web design, baking to filmmaking, firearm shooting to dance.

Even the line between the old 4-H standbys of livestock-raising and home economics has blurred, and goals have become more holistic.

“I was raised in 4-H; my parents were 4-H leaders,” says Bonnie Smith, a Longmont farmer who runs the Fairview Crops and Livestock club with husband James.

“We had a livestock club and a home ec club, and they didn’t have much to do with each other.

low it through the process, from packing to choosing the cut a cook is looking for, until it arrives on the dinner table.”

Some clubs, such as Tina Pohlmann’s Critters and Creations, include separate activities for children between ages 5 and 9 in a program called “Cloverbuds.”

“We’ll do things like plant seeds and make bird feeders,” says Pohlmann, who grew up with livestock but turned to road construction as a career. “We have several projects for older kids; one of our most popular is called the ‘Horseless Horse’ — it’s for kids who would love to have a horse but can’t have one at home.”

Adults can get involved, even those who have never been in 4-H, through volunteering and teaching skills. It’s how clubs can offer a number of interests for young people to pursue outside of the traditional ag focus.

Engineer Michael Cook, who works for the Little Thompson Water District, steers Silver Spurs, a club with an interest in science and technology. Members are currently learning new technology with a donated, three-wheeled electric car.

Even here, the focus isn’t narrow.

“We also baked pies for Thanksgiving,” he says. “All kinds — pot pies, fruit pies.”

Made-in-America murderers Journalist details how post-Iraq PTSD ravaged the lives of several Colorado Springs vets

T

he murderers whose story Colorado Springs journalist David Philipps tells in his new book, Lethal Warriors, are hardly a sympathetic bunch. As Philipps writes it, they murdered their victims — servicemen, innocent strangers, ex-lovers — at the slightest provocation, or with none at all. Some were murdered with precise, cold-blooded professionalism, others with savage force.

Yet what ties these murders together, and the reason why they’re important, is that all the perpetrators served in the same infantry battalion in the most brutal parts of Iraq during the bloodiest times of the war, and upon returning to the States they slipped through the cracks of a military system that had little interest in treating their psychological injuries, at times even spurning the soldiers’ attempts for help. The Army trained young men as killers, exposed them to brutal combat situations that made them mentally unstable, and then set them loose on the civilian population of Colorado Springs with little or no treatment.

Philipps started writing a series of articles for the Colorado Springs Gazette about murders and other crimes committed by soldiers in the 4th Infantry Division’s 1st Batallion, 506th Regiment, famously known during World War II as the Band

of Brothers. The articles were published in 2009; that same year, he was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Philipps, who normally writes ski stories for the paper and whose stories have occassionally run in Boulder Weekly, says he saw a trend about crimes committed by soldiers and was “mad as hell” no one else had written about the subject.

“The articles, the point of them was really to make a statement that there was something going on that was bigger than the violence in the city,” he told Boulder Weekly. “It was making an argument. We are having these murders because of A, B and C, and part of it is that the systems that were in place in Fort Carson were broken.”

There are several names for the psychological afflictions soldiers bring with them from combat zones. In the past, people have called them “battle fatigue,” “shell shock” and even “cowardice.” Since 1980, the official name has been “post-traumatic stress disorder” (PTSD), but some insist on the slightly less stigmatizing term “combat stress injuries.”

day by a man delivering newspapers. A fellow soldier named Louis Bressler shot Shields in the head after Shields said something “snide” that no one involved in the events that night seems to remember. Bressler’s unit had recently finished two almost consecutive combat tours in some of the most dangerous parts of Iraq — the Sunni Triangle in 2004 and Baghdad in 2006. Shields wasn’t Bressler’s only victim; he had murdered another soldier named Robert James just weeks earlier.

Philipps delves deeply into the story behind the Band of Brothers, from the unit’s initial deployment in Korea through the second tour in Iraq. He assigned himself to the story after failing to convince other reporters to take it, and he started by going straight to the source: the prisoners themselves. Surprisingly, they were open to speaking with him.

“What they told me was that their tours had just been totally horrific, and that there was no meaningful game plan for re-intregrating them when they came back,” Philipps says. “What’s interesting is that I think a lot of times it’s difficult to talk to soldiers about what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. They don’t think [journalists will] understand, or they don’t think we’ll appreciate what they’re telling us, or they think we’re only looking for sort of really sensational stuff. … But the guys in prison were different,

because they had been cast out of their society and had been sent away to prison for decades, so it seemed like they were in sort of a position where they might be doing some soul-searching. … I think that gave them some openness.”

Supporters of the Iraq war point to its relatively low body count as compared to other wars — around 4,400, compared to 58,000 for Vietnam — but that number only begins to tell the whole story of the casualties of war. As Philipps points out, thanks to advances in body armor and armored vehicles, more and more servicemen are seeing combat and living to talk about it. Better armor means more cases of psychological damage than physical damage.

And there are statistics to support this. In World War II, you had a one in three chance of dying from battle wounds. In Vietnam, it was one in four.

In Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s around one in 15 (Philipps averages two figures from two different sources to arrive at that number.)

“Iraq and Afghanistan are new kinds of war with new kinds of casualties,” Philipps writes. “Nothing illustrates this better than this: By 2009, while the United States was engaged in two separate wars, more soldiers died from suicide, drugs and alcohol than died by the hand of the enemy.”

The institutional blindness shown by

the U.S. Army regarding psychological combat wounds is part of what makes Lethal Warriors disturbing. In the infantry, soldiers are trained to control their emotions and react intelligently under the most stressful situations imaginable.

If a soldier starts showing signs of PTSD, others might see him as not tough enough, unable to handle the stresses of combat. Philipps writes about how soldiers eventually convicted for murder lied their way through flimsy post-combat mental health questionnaires, out of fear of damaging their careers as well as alienation from their fellow troops. When some of the soldiers did eventually seek help, they were either turned away or shoved into an overloaded mental health system to be medically retired or expelled from the Army using a loophole, an especially cruel process known as being “chaptered out.”

Chaptering out meant kicking a soldier out for having a pre-existing mental health condition, and Philipps interviewed an Army social worker who said superiors pressured them to probe soldiers’ past for signs of pre-existing psychological trauma and diagnose them with that instead of with PTSD. Then, the Army could kick out the soldier in days instead of the months it would take to properly medically retire someone.

And, perhaps most importantly, the soldier would lose VA medical benefits. It

was the Army’s way of wiping its hands of soldiers they thought unfit or unworthy to serve, and it left countless soldiers who should have received proper diagnoses without a safety net.

The Army comes off badly, but there are heroes, as well. Gen. Mark Graham took over Fort Carson in 2007, and tragedy with one of his children had given him a sympathetic view of mental health disorders. Six soldiers committed suicide that year, and Graham took steps to ensure that never happened again. He doubled the size of the base’s psychiatry staff, then doubled it again the next year.

He reached out to a veterans advocate the Army had previously shunned. And he instituted a major epidemiological study of mental health that eventually concluded what seems obvious at first glance: Combat fucks with people.

Philipps says Graham’s improvements are working. Suicide at Fort Carson is down 45 percent this year, and there has only been one murder charge.

But Philipps says the problem will continue until more drastic steps are taken.

“It’s all sort of remedial. It’s treating the problem instead of the cause,” Philipps says. “It costs a lot of money to do this stuff, and we’re going to keep [spending] a lot of money to do this stuff until we stop repeatedly sending young guys to war.”

Takács Quartet tackles pieces by the father of the string quartet

t seems that every month brings a new article announcing the demise of classical music.

The evidence has been the same for several years now.

Record sales are down. Audiences are getting older. Orchestras are cutting budgets.

But if classical music is dying, somebody forgot to tell the Takács Quartet and its audience.

Quartet-in-residence at the CU College of Music since 1983, the Takács Quartet has been selling out its concerts in CU’s 500-seat Grusin Hall almost from its arrival in Boulder: first one performance each of six programs every year, then a second performance of selected programs, and finally two performances — Sunday-Monday pairs — of each program they present.

That’s 1,000 tickets, five times a year, for a string quartet. It’s a record few chamber ensembles can match.

Four students at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest, Hungary, founded the quartet in 1975. With players trained in the same Hungarian string-playing tradition and sharing a common culture, the quartet immediately had a unity of style and a highly individual identity. That identity, based in an intensity of expression, a willingness to take risks and a sense of humor in performance, quickly propelled the Takács Quartet to the front ranks of chamber groups around the world.

Since then, two of the original members have retired, and today the quartet features first violinist Edward Dusinberre from Leamington Spa, England; second violinist Károly Schranz, one of the original members; violist Geraldine Walther, a Florida native; and cellist András Fejér, the other remaining founding member.

Transitions in string quartets are notoriously tricky. The career stakes are high for all the players, and for the new members, stepping into an established group can be intimidating.

“It was daunting for me, absolutely,” Dusinberre admits. “It was a challenging time, but it was also a huge adventure for me. I think in a way it was more stressful for [the other members of the quartet] because they had been doing it for 18 years and there was a lot at stake for them. For me it was a wonderful opportunity.”

To all evidence, the quartet’s high standard of quality has survived. Recently the critic of the London Guardian wrote, “This is chamber-music playing of overwhelming intensity, insight and intelligence, simply the best I have ever heard in concert.”

And the Ann Arbor News commented, “The group’s Boulder Weekly

playing is so alive, so rich and in the moment, it makes you listen with every fiber.”

The quartet’s repertoire for the remainder of the Boulder season is extraordinarily varied. It includes staples by Haydn, Schubert and Bartók; less familiar works by Smetana, Respighi and Chausson; and a brand new work written for the Takács Quartet by American composer Daniel Kellog.

For the next concert pair (Sunday at 4 p.m. and Monday at 7:30 p.m.), the group will play two quartets by Haydn for the first half of the program, although not the same quartets both nights. The Sunday afternoon concert features Op. 74 No. 1 in C major and Op. 71 No. 2 in D major; on Monday it will be Op. 71 No. 1 in B-flat major, paired again with Op. 71 No. 2. For both programs, the second half of the concert will be Bedrich Smetana’s Quartet in E minor, “From My Life.”

Although Haydn and Smetana come from very different musical worlds, both composers address one of the basic issues of chamber music: music written for private performance as opposed to music written for an audience. Because chamber music is played by a single player on each part, it resembles a private conversation among the players. But today most chamber music is played before an audience that seemingly eavesdrops on the players. Thus the music is simultaneously public and private.

“That theme of public and private is one of the most interesting things about chamber music,” Dusinberre says. “It’s something we talk about a lot in the quartet.”

In Haydn’s time, chamber music was a private experience. But Haydn changed that with the quartets from Opp. 71 and 74: These works were written for the composer’s second visit to London, where they were to be played as part of the composer’s highly successful concert series. They are the first string quartets written expressly for concert performance.

“He is thinking of the larger space,” Dusinberre

says. “The way each of those pieces starts with some sort of a fanfare or a chord [is] kind of just grabbing the audience’s attention to say ‘Shut up!

We’re about to start playing!’ It’s hard to replicate that because audiences are well behaved nowadays. You’d almost need to come out and play the chords before they sat down to create that effect.

“But on the other hand, although they’re for a public space, still as an audience you feel like you are eavesdropping on private conversations; there’s still a lot of witty, intimate dialogue.”

Written some 80 years later, Smetana’s quartet moves in the opposite direction. By the 1870s, chamber music was a wellestablished concert genre. But with his Quartet in E minor, Smetana takes the listener into the very private world of his personal life and the tragedy of his growing deafness. This is most evident in the final movement, where the music suddenly breaks off and the first violinist sounds high E, representing the ringing in his ears that preceded the composer’s deafness.

This public expression of private experience, Dusinberre says, is a “feature of the time period and Romantic angst in the sense of need for self expression. When we’re playing the piece it just feels like baring your soul in a very public way.”

Melodramatic as it may seem, “in the context of the drama it works very well,” Dusinberre says. “The rest of that movement is like a big village party, and it’s a typical device in movies or literature to have a very public scene with a lot of dancing and festivity, and then at the end … you see that the public [scene] has just been a context for the more dramatic, painful, private one.”

Thus both composers are working out the publicprivate dynamic in a highly personal way. And when the Takács Quartet presents their music next Sunday and Monday, you can still be part of the public audience who listens in.

And the good news is that “sold out” doesn’t mean you can’t get into their remaining concerts this season ( Jan. 9-10, Feb. 13-14 and April 17-18; see the programs at http://bit.ly/eNckeS). In fact, CU box office Manager Nick Vocatura says, “I’ve never had to turn anybody away.” As Vocatura explains, there are three ways to get one of the hottest classical tickets in Boulder: You can call the box office (303-492-8008) and get on the waiting list for returned tickets, come to Grusin Hall before a concert and get on the wait list for last-minute turnbacks, or purchase stage seating, for which a limited number of tickets remain.

Tried and true troubadours Local songwriters’ collective allows everyone a place on stage

hese days, the word “troubadour” has become virtually synonymous with “singer.” Yet if you take a look back to medieval days when the word emerged, you’ll see that the original meaning was much less inclusive. In order to be classified as a troubadour, one couldn’t merely sing other people’s songs; you had to write your own. Those who only performed others’ material were demoted to the ranks of “joglars,” and if you were female, even if you were a composer, you could only ever be a “trobairitz.”

fits that strength in numbers can provide.

“It made sense to pool our collective fan bases and pack the place. I knew we’d all be at each other’s shows anyway, so why not also perform and bring more people to the shows?” Soskin says. “It also seemed like it would be a fantastic platform to showcase undiscovered local talent. It can certainly be daunting as a new songwriter trying to gather support, but there are many places far less supportive than Boulder. In the 10 years I’ve been performing here I’ve seen some great acts rise to the challenge, and Boulder has held them up.”

To continue being an embracing and diverse group, the Troubadours welcome newcomers to join in their frequent shows, which take place every couple of months.

“It’s all about who’s excited and inspired to be a part of it,” Hawk says. “We welcome anyone who’s willing to do the work to make it successful.”

The members of the collective take turns handling details like the promotion and booking of the events, making the group a bit of a musical co-op. While logistical components like increased ticket sales and easier networking definitely factor into their motivation, at the Troubadours’ core, it’s all about community.

“It makes the experience richer when more people are touched by the art. You might be coming to hear a certain person play and then someone else you haven’t heard blows you away for a moment and puts you right into your body and your heart,” Mortimer says. “All the best songwriters I know in their respective genres are coming together to give a sampling of the most current sound in our region. It’s the best of the local flavor in a myriad of expression, all in one place.”

Boulder’s Dinner Theatre puts on a classic and succeeds

ere weeks ago candles glowed warmly in menorahs. Christmas lights twinkled on eaves and living room trees. The riotous colors of Kwanzaa accompanied the celebration of Umoja and Kuumba. Children from 1 to 92 smiled wide at unexpected presents.

Families rejoiced with annual visits and lifetime traditions. And though we didn’t have a flake of snow on the ground or in the air, the world felt a little bit more magical as we celebrated the holidays.

Well, kiss all that peace on Earth and good will goodbye because the winter doldrums are officially here. January and February, in particular, are a seasonal nadir during which the holiday hangover combines insidiously with short, dark days and freezing cold nights to produce angst and ennui undreamt of on balmy June afternoons. Fresh from too-short vacations, students again take up their lessons, and workers return to their toil with all the good humor and hopefulness of death-row inmates. Tempers grow short, cabin fever sets in and that nice old lady who rang the bell for the Salvation Army last month just might pepper spray you for parking too close to her Subaru.

It is at this time of year more than any other that we must search out joyful diversions. We all have our coping mechanisms. Whether it’s skiing or snowboarding in our snow-sports-playground of a state, hopping a jet to sunnier climes or embarking on marathon sex sessions with complete strangers, we all find some way to power through this least wonderful time of the year. Thankfully, this year there’s one more way to shoo the grey from the day.

With the Broadway classic, Hello, Dolly!, Boulder’s Dinner Theatre demolishes those depressing, debili-

tating doldrums. Based on Thornton Wilder’s The Matchmaker — which was, in turn, based on his much more humorously titled if much less humorous The Merchant of Yonkers — Hello, Dolly! has won Tony awards, Grammys and Oscars over the course of its many incarnations. More importantly, Hello, Dolly! is a feel good, toe-tapping throwback to the heyday of musical theatre guaranteed to leave your heart lighter and your outlook more upbeat.

If you are unfamiliar with the singular Mrs. Dolly Gallagher Levi, a character portrayed most notably by Carol Channing on stage and Barbara Streisand on film, then let me just say that she is one crafty, hilarious broad. In a time when women were still, by and large, relegated to being mothers, or maybe schoolmarms, Dolly is a self-made, selfsufficient woman of the world. Her main employment is matchmaking, but she sidelines in just about any honorable vocation at which a buck can be made, a fact attested to by her ubiquitous business cards.

Hello, Dolly! will have you laughing from the very first scene. Not content merely to tickle your funny bone, Hello, Dolly! also contains some incredibly well-known and well-loved musical numbers, including “Before The Parade Passes By” and, of course, “Hello Dolly.” As Dolly, Alicia Dunfee dazzles. Assured but not cocky, genuine but not sappy, Dunfee’s Dolly hits all the right notes — musically and otherwise. It takes a strong performer to present Dolly as a real woman and not a caricature, and Dunfee is more than up to the task.

As Dolly’s primary customer and unknowing love interest, Wayne Kennedy matches Dunfee beat for beat as Horace Vandergelder. One moment a gruff miser, the next a vulnerable romantic, Kennedy effortlessly works Vandergelder’s various angles. Though he and Dunfee seldom share the stage, their performances are the center of and the principal reason for seeing Hello, Dolly! Both actors appear to be having great fun with their roles, and each is a pure pleasure to watch.

Far less expensive than a plane ticket to Fiji or even a day on the slopes, Hello, Dolly! is the antidote to the mid-winter blues.

Two Colorado ski manufacturers lead a global revolution

Wood

. One of the most basic building materials known to humans, wood is the foundation of skis and snowboards. This versatile, beautiful material was used for the first skis. The legendary Austrian pioneer of downhill skiing, Arnold Lund, perfected the first alpine turns with skis made of wood. The first snowboard — the Snurfer — developed by Sherman Poppen in 1966, was made of wood, and Jake Burton used wood prototypes to refine his snowboard designs, designs that would eventually give birth to one of the largest brands in action sports, Burton Snowboards.

Today, wood remains an integral part of modern ski and snowboard construction. The best skis and

boards use a laminated “sandwich” construction, where vertically laminated wood is sandwiched between layers of fiberglass, epoxy and other materials, such as the plastic topsheet and bottom p-tex layer, to build the end product. And, despite experiments with manufactured materials such as foam to replace wood cores for skis and snowboards, wood remains the industry standard.

But while wood has a long and illustrious history in skiing, the material has been largely abandoned for us in the most visible part — the top — of a ski or snowboard. Modern plastics have proven extremely durable and, perhaps most importantly, inexpensive, and the vast majority of commercially available skis or snowboards feature that technology. However, over the past 10 years this has started to change as a new

generation of boutique snowboard and ski manufacturers have rediscovered both the beauty and versatility of wood and have begun to incorporate the material into the topsheet of their products, creating skis and snowboards that have the rich historical patina of the skis of yesterday but perform like the modern tools that they are.

Two of the leaders of this revolution are Colorado-based brands ScottyBob and Ski Logiks.

Another Colorado company, Wagner (featured in the Oct. 22, 2009, issue of Boulder Weekly), doesn’t use wood for its topsheets normally, but because the company only makes custom skis, it’s possible to order this material as an option. These brands are part of a growing trend that’s gone global. Igneous Skis, located in Jackson Hole, Wyo., has been creating custom January 6, 2011 35

skis (and snowboards), many of which have wood topsheets, for a rabid local following for more than 15 years. Igneous is joined by Arbor Snowboards, which has focused exclusively on wood topsheets since the brand’s inception in 1995, and Rabbit On The Roof, an obscure French company which makes both skis and snowboards and is the brainchild of Peter Steltzner, an American cabinetmaker and woodworker who loved skiing and decided to see if he could create skis and snowboards (and monoskis, too!), as well as custom cabinetry.

Rabbit On The Roof is emblematic of the new movement towards creating wood masterpieces that also stand up to abuse on the mountain. Steltzner handcrafts fewer than 100 skis per year. But while his topsheets are wood, they hide high-tech guts underneath, including Kevlar, fiberglass and carbon. And the company’s name? Steltzner says it comes from a rabbit that lived in the rafters of his French workshop, inspiring and irritating the California transplant.

Launched in 1995, Arbor Snowboards also focuses on wood. The company was an early adopter of green construction, using koa, maple and bolivar woods, as well as bamboo, in its board construction. Their award-winning snowboards sparked diversification, with the company now building wood skateboards as well. These “longboards” are available, as are the brand’s snowboards, in Boulder at Satellite Boardshop.

Against this backdrop, the success of Colorado brands ScottyBob and Ski Logiks shouldn’t be surprising. Only one year old, Ski Logik is based out of Breckenridge and is quickly gaining a reputation for manufacturing high-quality products that perform well and look fantastic, with the brand’s Howitzer model winning accolades from Freeskier Magazine.

ferent models of alpine skis, it’s the brand’s funky telemark skis that have served ScottyBob well. It doesn’t hurt that the skis look different, and we’re not just talking about the rich patina of a Koa wood topsheet (which is beautiful), but also the wild shape of ScottyBob’s asymmetrical designs.

But do they work? Customers who have bought them rave about the design and performance of the skis, developed

by ScottyBob Carlson in the late ’90s.

“A mind-blowing ski,” “a revelation” and “light and nimble underfoot and easy to turn” are a few of the accolades that have been bestowed on the product.

And, like many of the manufacturers featured here, ScottyBob hand-crafts the skis, doing much of the work himself.

While you have to make the trip to Silverton to try a pair of ScottyBobs (or trust in faith and order some directly from the company via its website), you can check out Ski Logik’s offerings locally at Golden’s Bent Gate Mountaineering or at Boulder’s Christy Sports on 30th Street.

For brands like Igneous, you’ll have to look harder. And to try some of Peter Steltzner’s creations, it’s best to show up in La Grave, France, the first week of April, when Rabbit On The Roof hosts demos in conjunction with that ski area’s legendary Derby de la Meije ski race.

But regardless of what you end up skiing on, it’s worth listening to Ski Logik’s Mazzarella. A veteran skier and ski designer, he has a simple take on the new generation of skis that feature wood as the most visible material.

“Skis were invented thousands of years ago,” says Mazzarella. “And they have always been carved from wood.

Yeah, there are different processes and special woods, and there’s always been a lot of hand work in the better skis.

Wood is part of the tradition, and putting wood on the top is merely carrying on this tradition.”

Marsh concedes that it’s tempting for some to dismiss the brand, due to the fact that all of the company’s seven models for 2010 look like pieces of art that would best be hanging above the fireplace in a ritzy ski lodge.

“The artistic top brings people in,” concedes Marsh. “But once they see the reviews and ski the ski, they realize that it’s not just a pretty face.”

Marsh and Ski Logik co-founder David Mazzarella have deep Colorado roots. Both have lived here for decades, and the design and construction of the skis they make is directly influenced by the mountains. There are no skinny race skis or carvers. All models are versatile and, like Rabbit on The Roof, the brand uses high-tech construction and materials under its lush wood topsheets.

“There is more labor going into our skis than any others on the market,” says Mazzarella. “I wanted to pursue the art of ski-making as far as possible. There are no stains or inks on the topsheets.

We hand-bend the edges out of single pieces of steel, and we’ve also found in testing that we have a damper ski with wood on top, so putting the wood on top creates something magical.”

Mazzarella admits, though, that “if the skis just looked nice and didn’t perform, then we’d have nothing.”

Performance is also at the center of the ScottyBob brand. With a focus on asymmetrical telemark skis, ScottyBob is based in Silverton, a town that is becoming a touchstone of Colorado ski culture in part because of Silverton Mountain, an untamed ski area with one chairlift, no grooming or beginner runs and some of the steepest skiing in North America.

Missed payoff

aybe in a few years, the high-flying machinations of notorious Washington puppet-master Jack Abramoff and Michael Scanlon, his partner in crime, will be funny. But even with Kevin Spacey trying his carnival barker hardest in Casino Jack, it still feels too painfully close to find much humor in Abramoff ’s now legendary, and illegal, lobbying efforts.

If a fast-talking manipulator of political egos wasn’t hard enough to make appealing in the way of, say, Michael Douglas’ Wall Street abuser, there were other problems facing this fictionally flip tale. The biggest? It was beaten to the punch line earlier this year by Alex Gibney’s very fine documentary, Casino Jack and the United States of Money, which audiences didn’t much want to see either. Coupled with the news reports earlier this month that Abramoff had completed his prison sentence at a Baltimore halfway house, it makes the film a little too deja vu all over again.

Directed by George Hickenlooper, who died from an accidental drug overdose at 47 just a few months before the film’s release, Casino Jack uses some conventions more often employed by documentaries. It is in the documentary world that Hickenlooper arguably did some of his best work, most notably the 1992 Emmywinning behind-the-scenes look at the star-crossed production of Francis Ford Coppola’s Apocalypse Now.

Black humorless

ow-brow. Just expect it from Gulliver’s Travels. When Gulliver ( Jack Black) first arrives at the kingdom of Lilliput and puts out a raging fire by dropping his shorts and urinating, I was astonished by the audience laughter. This is a film unabashedly aimed at teen boys, as are too many of Black’s films.

Black is mailroom clerk and general shlub Lemuel Gulliver, in love with travel section editor Darcy Silverman (Amanda Peet). After straightarrow new hire Dan (local Denver comedian T.J. Miller) goes from Gulliver’s sole employee to his boss in a single day, Gulliver stumbles asking Darcy out and instead gets a travel writing assignment to head down to the Bermuda Triangle and unearth its secrets.

Thus begins a ridiculous sequence of events that lands him on the island of Lilliput, a place where everything is 1/12th normal size, including the daft love triangle of Princess Mary (Emily Blunt), pompous General Edward (Chris O’Dowd) and imprisoned commoner Horatio ( Jason Segel). The story is so predictable that the only pleasure in the film is the special visual effects, and they are impressive, done by the effects team that created the far more entertaining Night At the Museum movies.

Here, using documentary-style dialogue to deliver relatively straightforward explanations proves effective in filling in the complicated details of the wheeling and dealing Jack did with Indian casinos, hence his nickname. But at other times, it can feel heavy-handed, for example, when the word “lobbyist” is deconstructed onscreen like a Webster’s definition.

By the time we meet Jack, he’s a powerhouse of influence trading, well known around the Beltway.

Along with his sycophant-sidekick Scanlon (Barry Pepper, very believable as an oily slickster), they prove to be quite the fleet-footed, tap-dancing pair, one step

ahead of being caught until they are.

Pepper and Spacey try to get the chemistry of the partnership cooking so that when things combust you’ll better understand, if not care, about the fallout. But too often the actors occupy the same space, but are not in the same place, the one where a believable human connection exists.

As the stakes get higher, the schemes get more desperate and the characters Jack rubs shoulders with are more of the admitted mobster types. But instead of ratcheting up in intensity, the filmmakers opt for comic relief in the form of Jon Lovitz, in a bizarre buffoonish turn as a friend of Jack with mob connections.

Other people spin in and out of Jack’s orbit, most notably wife Pam (Kelly Preston) and Tom DeLay (Spencer Garrett), the former Bush-era House majority leader recently convicted of money laundering.

But Jack is very much the sun in this world, and Spacey its caustic center. Though the film is peppered with one-liners tailor-made for Spacey to sling with stinging effect, it doesn’t so much leave you laughing as just weary, and wishing this weren’t a true story at all.

3-D, with James Cameron (Avatar) insisting that every film will be in 3-D in a few years. If the 3-D in Gulliver’s Travels is anything to go by, however, 3-D is going to die a slow, lonely death and be a forgotten note in cinematic history. Gulliver’s Travels was the worst, least effective 3-D I’ve seen, and that includes the poorly retrofit 3-D of Clash of the Titans and lazy 3-D of the otherwise creative Alice in Wonderland.

The entire story was inexplicably banal and soph-

omoric, given that the cast included some excellent actors, including Blunt (The Devil Wears Prada), Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall), Peet (Syriana) and even Black, who was far superior in Peter Jackson’s King Kong remake, but director Rob Letterman never gave any of the cast roles to work with, and the characters are all so one-dimensional that you can predict their onscreen pratfalls.

Which leads us to the special effects. I’m a fan of special effects, no question, and that’s one reason I really enjoyed Tron: Legacy. In Gulliver’s Travels, however, the visual effects are the story, a fundamental problem that no amount of crude humor from Black or throwaway attempts at a more serious commentary on war between the Lilliputians and Blefuscians can mask.

Having said all of that, there were a few amusing scenes and the film was escapism at its most pure: best seen after you shut off the critical thinking part of your brain. If impressive visual effects and a few chuckles are sufficient for you to be entertained, then you might just be the target audience for this expensive mess of a comedy. Just don’t see it in 3-D. Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish), the film was inspired by the story of Robert Durst, scion of the wealthy Durst family. Mr. Durst was suspected but never tried for killing his wife, Kathie, who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. At Esquire. — Landmark Theatre The Fighter This movie is an off-center but exceptional boxing film that feels like it comes from real life as well as the movies. Set and shot mostly in Lowell, Mass., this is the true story of welterweight Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) and his trainer-brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale), careening from addiction themes to brotherly love and familial crises. Nearly all of the acting performances are fantastic, including Amy Adams as Micky’s lover, a performance with the sort of honesty and hard-shell truth we too rarely see. Before there was Jeff Potter’s “Cooking for Geeks” ...

And long before anyone heard of molecular gastronomy, there was Harold McGee, the original food-science nerd who proved it in 1984 with On Food and Cooking, an absorbing and authoritative guide to the history and science of all we consume.

Over the last 26 years — and through a major book update in 2004 — McGee has become the go-to guy for the whys and hows of cooking. His fat, red tome graces the bookshelves of most serious foodies, ready to serve up definitive technical and historical answers on all things food and cooking.

But McGee has yearned to produce something that was less hefty reference book and more working tool in a busy kitchen.

His answer is Keys to Good Cooking: A Guide to Making the Best of Foods and Recipes. Though still checking in at more than 550 pages, it’s designed to deliver concise advice at the moment you need it. And even for experienced cooks, that advice is often surprising. McGee surprised himself several times as he tested and studied each issue to come up with the absolutely best way to proceed.

We caught up with the author and New York Times food columnist on his book tour and talked with him about common misperceptions he hopes to clear up, among other things.

Q: So many people see On Food and Cooking as the final word on cooking. Why did you feel the need to write this new book?

A: Because people who enjoyed On Food and Cooking said when they had a particular practical issue in the kitchen all the wonderful information got in the way. So I wanted to provide an unvarnished, unpadded

guide to basic facts and basic advice in the kitchen. It’s meant to live in the kitchen, while On Food and Cooking is more of an armchair book. I’ve also left lots of space for readers to write in their own ideas and observations that work for their particular circumstance. I wanted to provide a kind of information and advice central.

Q: I had so many aha moments while reading your book and I really thought I knew my way around a kitchen. Did you surprise yourself during some of your research?

A: Yes, I always thought it was better to cook pasta in plenty of water or else it would get sticky or gummy,

but it turns out minimal water is best. And I thought you were never supposed to crowd vegetables in a pan but it turns out you can and they end up absorbing less oil and they still brown just fine.

Q: What are some of the biggest mistakes people make in the kitchen?

A: There are lots and lots and many are minor, but the main ones I like to emphasize are really basic, like measuring. Spoons and cups measure ingredients plus air and are therefore very unreliable, especially when you are measuring something like salt. If you are measuring in a spoon, the amount can vary by a third, and if you happen to be using kosher salt, you can be off by a factor of two.

Q: I noted this and then vowed to finally buy myself a good scale. But then I remembered that most of my cookbooks are written in cups and spoons. What’s a cook to do?

A: Eventually cookbooks will switch over, but you and I don’t have a decade to wait. So get to know the equivalents using the tables I have inside the covers of my book. Along the way you will start to remember that a cup is 250 grams of water, etc. This is especially important in baking.

Q: Another thing I learned is that I have been storing my whole wheat flour all wrong — outside the refrigerator. Why is it so different from white flour?

A: Once grains are ground, their interiors are exposed, and when you leave in the oil-rich bran and germ, they can oxidize and go rancid and you’ll end up with off flavors quickly.

Unfortunately for many Americans, we assume that rancid flavors are normal because that’s all we’ve ever experienced. The consumer work that has been done with olive oil has found that the oils the experts rate as rancid are the ones consumers like best. (And see COOKBOOK Page 45

Low-Fat, Gluten-Free Pear Cobbler

elcome, 2011. I’ve been waiting forever for you. Well, for at least a year.

I decided just to re-use my resolutions from last year, which were — wait for it — no resolutions. I felt great about it, and had no guilt when indulging in every Dessert Diva treat under the sun. Of course, I would sneak a workout in every now and then, but not because I had too, because I wanted to, and Flatirons Athletic Club is where I read my Boulder Weekly, so double bonus.

This week, I’m sure it is no surprise when I tell you that the dessert du jour is Low-Fat, Gluten-Free Pear Cobbler. It has to happen like that, it makes people feel good indulging in a treat like this in January with all the resolutions floating around.

Actually, this treat will make everyone feel good, resolutions or not. It is simple, tasty and doesn’t leave you feeling cheated on taste, texture or sustenance. I have cut the butter and the sugar in half, and used gluten-free rice flour, which works well for this dessert and is readily available and not too pricey, as some other gluten-free flours can be.

I prefer fruit desserts a little on the tart side, so the lower sugar count tastes great to me. You can top with homemade whipped cream (just a dollop, please), or some vanilla frozen yogurt tastes wonderful with the cobbler. Edy’s Slow Churned Vanilla yogurt is a nice choice for gluten free.

You could roll like me, soak some pears in champagne and sprinkle with cinnamon — holy deliciousness.

Perhaps my resolution for 2011 should be fewer alcohol/dessert references. I thought about it, but that just wouldn’t be fun or me, and isn’t that what we all want for the new year? Fun and free to be ourselves.

You will love this easy little dessert, and it will start your new year

off in a good and tasty way. If you happen to have a little champagne left over from your celebration, then I suggest you break it out and enjoy with the dessert. See, I couldn’t stop if I wanted to.

Now follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Low-Fat, Gluten-Free Pear Cobbler 2 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted (Land o’ Lakes) 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 cup plus 2 tbsp. gluten-free rice flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. cinnamon (plus more for sprinkling on top of pears) Pinch of salt 1/2 cup Lactaid low-fat milk 1 tsp. vanilla 3 pears cored and sliced (I used Bosc pears)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Place melted butter in pie plate. In large bowl, sift together brown sugar, gluten-free rice flour, baking powder, cinnamon and salt. Add milk and vanilla, stir until well combined.

Pour batter into buttered pie plate. Arrange sliced pears on top of batter. Sprinkle generously with cinnamon. Place cobbler on baking sheet. Bake for 40-45 minutes, until top is golden brown. Take out and let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature. Top with low-fat vanilla yogurt (Edy’s makes glutenfree) or whipped cream if desired.

Note: You can use any glutenfree flour with this dessert.

Q: In the introduction to your book, you stray from practical kitchen advice to recommend that people think about the sustainability of their food choices. Why? A: It pays to pause and realize that every time you buy you are making a choice, and [that] choice should reflect what’s important to you. And if sustainability and humane treatment of animals is important, then you should look at labels and go on websites [to] see if those labels actually mean something, and buy with more awareness.

Q: So much of food writing and cooking depends on a shared sense of what tastes good. And so you totally blew my mind Boulder Weekly

when you said that we may all taste things differently.

A: Yes, we all live in different universes when it comes to taste and smell, because we depend upon about 400 different receptors in our mouth and nose to detect flavors, and probably no two human beings on the planet have exactly the same repertoire of sensors. And sometimes it’s a pretty minor difference, but other times it’s like color blindness.

While the menu may seem typical, May Wah doesn’t take its customers for granted, as exemplified by flavorful Mongolian beef and crisp sesame chicken.

efty’s is a New England pizza joint transplanted to Niwot. The bill of fare consists of the expected pizza, as well as subs, salads, calzones and pasta. The thin crust pies have a fine texture, and those featuring the garlic and olive oil sauce pack a flavorful punch.

The morning menu features standard bacon-and-egg breakfasts with such flourishes as Germanstyle potatoes and fine vegetarian green chile.

Vegetarians will enjoy the flavorful bean pupusa, while the carnivore will delight in the rich pork versions.
