More on Danish (Re: “Is Nablus Boulder’s sister?”

Danish Plan, Dec. 15.) I just posted a comment to an article by Mr. Danish that focused only on the radical element in Palestine as to why Boulder shouldn’t consider Nablus as a sister city. I do appreciate the Boulder Weekly for presenting his views, whether he resolves his hatred or not. Still, I trust the Boulder City Council and the people of Boulder will welcome Nablus as a sister city to help promote peace there, which is what makes Boulder very unique. I wish I still lived there and could be part of that peace-making process.

In 1948, when Palestine was divided into Israel and Trans-Jordan, many of thousands of Palestinian Arabs were urged/invited/coerced/forced to leave their homes in what had become the new Jewish State. Nablus alone has three refugee camps. Consider the contention the Occupy Movement aroused in the U.S. over just a couple of months. Any wonder there is frustration among peoples who have lived in camps for six decades?

t last, a New Year cometh! I say “at last” because, politically, 2011 was a rough ride.

Let me just mention a few of the bigger bumps: non-stop Congressional gridlock, Donnie Trump, the working class depression, Obama’s serial surrenders to raw Republican partisanship, Newt Gingrich, the re-emergence of Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko arrogance, right-wing governors gone wild, Rick “Oops” Perry, more tax breaks for corporations, Newt Gingrich (again) — and, at year’s end, both Sarah Palin and The Donald suggested that they might run for president (which could set up a titanic clash of big hairdos).

Yet, we should not despair about the many political downsides of the old year, for they have prompted a series of very promising uprisings at America’s grassroots. Progressives in states like Wisconsin, Boulder Weekly

(sometimes more soldiers than settlers) and linked to Israel itself by fine highways. The second-class Palestinians are left with crumbling communities and crummy, second-rate roads to keep them in check.

The many Israeli checkpoints are often manned by bored teens with Uzis who entertain themselves by hassling Palestinians, and the army meets Palestinian demonstrations with over-

Organize for 2012

by Jim Hightower Ohio, Montana, Colorado and Mississippi (yes, Mississippi!) scored big gains, and the Occupy Wall Street eruption all across the country has lifted spirits, revitalized grassroots organizing, and put some real “move” in the movement as we head into 2012.

In January, for example, a strong and savvy coalition will mobilize a nationwide campaign for repealing “corporate personhood” and the Supreme Court’s infamous Citizens United edict. Also, the rise of the

whelming force, tear gas and arrests of “suspected” terrorists. Is there a Hebrew word for habeas corpus? There could be no prisoner exchanges involving thousands of Palestinians for an Israel soldier or two if Israeli were not incarcerating so many “suspects.”

non-corporate economy is booming, with millions of Americans turning to co-ops, credit unions, farmers’ markets, fair trade shops and other local enterprises that ordinary people control, not absentee profiteers. Plus, strong, genuinely populist candidates for the U.S. Senate and House are running next year, including Elizabeth Warren in Massachusetts, Tammy Baldwin in Wisconsin, Norman Solomon in California, Ilya Sheyman in Illinois and Eric Griego in New Mexico.

We have important work to do, so don’t moan about 2011 — organize for 2012.

Other ways Danish is wrong Regarding the Danish Plan’s antianti-GMO editorial (“Anti-GMO activism is evil,” Nov. 17) and the follow-on arguments, some scattered points which have been nearly missed: 1. The cropland at issue is 960 acres. That is 1.5 square miles, less than

1 percent of Boulder County open space holdings. The question is limited to what may be planted on countyowned land. There is no attempt to tell farmers what they may grow on their own land.

2. In Europe and the U.K., foods may contain GMOs, but each GMO requires regulatory approval, and foods containing GMOs must be labeled as such. As a result, GMO-foods are essentially nonexistent over there. You might regard this as either the response of informed consumers or the result of fear-mongering against GMOs, but it does indicate what could happen if U.S. consumers were given information and a choice.

3. One pro-GMO talking point is “helping feed a growing world.” This is refuted in various ways — for example, the problem is not a lack of food but a lack of distribution and an excess of corruption, etc. But most telling is the see LETTERS Page 8

It’s so bad that there are genetic modifications used to ensure that farmers must buy new seed each year. Google “terminator gene” for one of the most egregious examples, and ask yourself how sterile seeds help feed the world.

Dick Dunn/Hygiene (Re: “Climate change: U.N. takes on wrong problem — again,” Danish Plan, Dec. 1.) Computer models confirm that global warming from manmade greenhouse gases will only result in a temperature increase of a fraction of a degree over hundreds of years.

However, the changes in ocean currents are melting the north polar ice cap at an alarming rate, resulting in a significant climate change now.

Unfortunately we have no idea why the ocean currents have changed! But we do need to adapt to the climate change. Cloud formation over liquid water will be much greater than over the ice cap, and extreme cold arctic temperatures will moderate.

The politicians will continue to preach global warming as a means to slow down the development of world civilization. Studies about climate change will be limited.

You are correct that global warming caused by greenhouse gases is a very long-term effect. However, the melting of the north polar cap is happening now. The ocean currents are moving the warm water from the tropics underneath the ice. Less water is being moved south. We do not have a clue why the currents have changed! We can expect increased rainfall as more air passes over the liquid ocean as compared to the frozen ice cap. Our primary climate change is now global warming. Unfortunately, very little effort is being spent trying to understand climate change.

Camera whiplash On Dec. 18, the day before the Boulder County commissioners were to announce their decision regarding the planting of GMO crops on county open space lands, the Camera decided to give them plenty of political cover by endorsing the use of these frankencrops on our open space.

After duly noting in its editorial that the “politically popular” position would be to oppose GMOs — this is an acknowledgement that the majority of Boulder residents are opposed to the use of genetically modified crops on their open space — the daily newspaper went on to explain its position. “We were swayed by the scientists who said GMOs are safe ... We were swayed by the members of the Cropland Policy Advisory Group (CPAG), who spent the most time on this issue ... We were swayed by the conventional farmers, who were treated most unfairly ... So when some of the overblown fears about GMO crops have been angrily expressed — pollen drift, or massive soil erosion, or even sick corn-fed chickens — it just doesn’t ring true.”

While the editorial made no mention of those opposed to GMOs trying to secure uranium from Niger, you get the point, and apparently so did the commissioners. But hold that thought.

Exactly 10 days later, on Dec. 28, after the damage had already been done, the front page of the Camera was singing a different tune. This time the paper ran a well-researched Associated Press story by Rick Callahan that declared: “One of the nation’s most widely planted crops — a genetically engineered corn plant that makes its own insecticide — may be losing its effectiveness because a major pest appears to be developing resistance more quickly than scientists expected.” We assume that these are not the same scientists who “swayed” the Camera’s editorial board.

The Callahan piece went on to say, “The U.S. food supply is not in any immediate danger because the problem remains isolated.” This statement implies, of course, that the food supply could be threatened if this situation stops being isolated and spreads, which is possible only because there is hardly any non-GMO corn left in the U.S. The genetically modified corn that the Camera is now warning us about is the same socalled Bt corn that we are currently growing on our open space lands. The same corn the newspaper “swayed” us to believe was safe just 10 days earlier when it referred to Boulder residents’ concerns about GMO crops as “overblown.” And worse yet, not everyone, including the EPA, is convinced that the problem is all that isolated.

According to Callahan’s AP story, “The Environmental Protection Agency recently chided Monsanto, declaring in a Nov. 22 report that it wasn’t doing enough to monitor suspected resistance among rootworm populations. The report urged a tougher approach, including expanding monitoring efforts to a total of seven states, including Colorado, South Dakota and Wisconsin. The agency also wanted to ensure farmers in areas of concern begin using insecticides and other methods to combat possible resistance.”

Odd advice, since one of the main arguments touted for growing GMO crops during the public input hearings was that the crops made it possible to avoid using the dangerous insecticides that the EPA is now advising farmers in states like Colorado to start using, due to the problems with Bt corn. Those problems are similar to other GMO crop failures, such as Bt cotton in India, which studies show led to increased, not decreased, insecticide use once pests were resistent.

Just to make sure there is no confusion, scientists have been aware of this problem since 2009, and the EPA report referred to on the front page of the Camera on Dec. 28 came out the month prior to the paper’s endorsement of GMO crops on open space.

Note to Camera editorial board: Next time you tell the majority of Boulder citizens that their concerns are “overblown” and fly in the face of science, tell your wire editor not to run an actual news story that proves that the citizens are right, and that you are wrong. It’s enough to cause a bad case of editorial whiplash.

Lawmaker wants long-term contracts for at-will faculty

A

state lawmaker is proposing legislation that would let colleges and universities give more job protection to at-will instructors, a group that some say are particularly susceptible to outside political pressures and “popularity contests” among students.

An increasing number of university courses are being taught not by tenured professors, but by non-tenure-track faculty who are generally paid less and can be fired for almost any reason. Tenure was created in part to protect the “marketplace of ideas” from outside influence — faculty charged with creating new knowledge and testing theories shouldn’t be subjected to political pressures that might affect their employment or their findings. When a non-tenure-track faculty member is fired for what is perceived to be political reasons, it can create a chilling effect that causes other at-will instructors to rein in views that might be controversial. And evaluations of nontenure-track faculty tend to be heavily reliant on student assessments, which can encourage instructors to give high marks so that students will return the favor.

Rep. Randy Fischer (D-Fort Collins) says the increasing reliance on non-tenure-track instructors is not good for education. He is introducing a bill in the upcoming legislative session that would let state colleges and universities give at-will instructors, or “contingent” faculty, renewable five-year employment contracts. (His bill stipulates that such contracts can be terminated if the institution can demonstrate that financial hardship justifies it.)

“If we’re going to rely on them, they should at least be afforded some due process rights and the academic freedom that other categories of employees have in the state,” Fischer says.

Fischer agrees with the findings of reports issued on Nov. 1 by the Colorado Conference of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) regarding the termination of two CU faculty members: senior instructor Phil Mitchell and professor Ward Churchill. While the Churchill Boulder Weekly

case involved the firing of a tenured professor with radical leftist views who wrote a controversial essay and was later found guilty of research misconduct, the Mitchell case involved an at-will senior instructor who claimed that his appointment was not renewed because of his ultra-conservative religious and political views. The AAUP reports recommend that “faculty in search of employment consider a position at the University of

Colorado only as a last resort because of the University of Colorado’s indifference to the ideals of academic freedom.”

Fischer says his bill is not aimed at the Churchill decision or expanding tenure.

“I’m hoping we can keep those issues separate,” he says. “All I’m trying to do here is provide a mechanism whereby colleges and universities can keep and retain and reward appropriately their contingent faculty, who are really becoming the workhorses of the academic environment.”

He says his primary concern revolves around the impact of student evaluations on non-tenure-track faculty.

“They really are in a unique employment category, in that they are subject to kind of a popularity contest among the students,” Fischer says. “If their coursework is deemed to be too rigorous, for example, I’ve heard of faculty members being dismissed because students thought they were having to work

too hard. That’s an academic freedom issue that I think is something that’s kind of a sad commentary on our education system.

“The folks becoming the majority of the faculty members on university campuses need to have some academic freedom rights to be able to do their jobs, hold students accountable, have rigorous curricula and maintain the standards of excellence in their universities and colleges,” he adds. “Is the administration going to support a faculty member who holds their students to high standards?”

Fischer stresses that his bill is “totally permissive” — in other words, it doesn’t dictate that colleges and universities must offer five-year contracts, it simply gives them the option to do so.

Don Eron, a senior instructor at CU who was the lead author of the AAUP reports, says he’s not optimistic that CU officials will support the legislation, because it would take away their standard excuse for not increasing job security and academic freedom for at-will instructors, which is that state law does not allow it.

Fischer says CU officials have not committed to endorsing — or even not opposing — his bill, but he has received positive signs that the CSU administration will not oppose the legislation.

He says colleges and universities had a telling reaction to a bill he carried unsuccessfully last year that would have simply required them to provide fired at-will faculty with a written statement about the reason for termination.

“Even that was met with almost unanimous opposition from the higher education community,” he says, adding that higher ed officials were concerned it would “open the door to a flood of wrongful termination lawsuits.”

CU spokesperson Ken McConnellogue told Boulder Weekly that CU officials have not yet reviewed Fischer’s legislation and may not have a position on it until after the session starts on Jan. 11.

The reintroduction of Clyfford Still Museum draws American master back onto the canvas of art history

E

ven art enthusiasts who believed they knew the work of leading American abstract expressionist Clyfford Still had surprises waiting when the museum of his work opened in Denver. But for everyone else, it was a surprise just knowing the man existed at all.

What reputation preceded him was that of an elitist who hid his work away. At a time when Still was being recognized as one of the most important working painters (1950s), he elected to withdraw his work from galleries, would show it only selectively and sell it rarely.

When the museum opened on Nov. 18, 2011, it brought to light paintings that had never been seen before. Staff began the decades-long task of restoring paintings that spent half a century rolled up and stored. And while the paintings had waited, Clyfford Still had drifted out of the consciousness of American art, leaving his contemporaries, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko among them, to become the better known artists.

They were more willing to compromise the ethic they all shared for exhibiting their work as a body and it served to raise their profile above that of the recalcitrant Still.

But while the work by Rothko and Pollock scattered to various museums and galleries, Still went on to get a museum of his own — in part because his work merits it and his last will and testament demanded it, and in part because of the devotion and commitment of those who loved him.

Perhaps one of the more significant hurdles in setting up a museum for Clyfford Still in Denver or anywhere else was convincing Patricia Still to let go of the paintings that had filled her home for half a century. Patricia met Clyfford as a student in his art class at Washington State University. He was 15 years her senior, married with a child. She would go on to follow him to San Francisco, where he and his first wife would have a second daughter. Eventually, Clyfford and Patricia moved to New York City together, where she supported him by working as a bookkeeper.

“That devotion that Aunt Pat had starting as a very young person, age 20, persisted until the day she died,” says Dr. Curt Freed, a professor and head of clinical pharmacology and toxicology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. His mother was Patricia’s sister. “I think that attachment accounts for some of the challenges in actually getting this museum to happen.”

table, and in that environment I remember being struck by this idea that said, ‘I want to keep my work together and I am not in the business of selling paintings.’

And he remained true to that.”

“I think he was incredibly principled. There was no such thing as moral ambiguity with him,” says Dee Covington, who wrote Clyfford Still: Daring the Light, produced by the Curious Theatre Company this fall. She looked to his letters, personal items in the museum’s collection from his teaching slides to the Kraft foods jars for mayonnaise and fruit salad he used for mixing his paints, his record collection, his fedora, documentaries and video of his daughters to compile a vision of him as a character.

“One of his quotes is, ‘Clear thinking is clear painting.’ And I think he always really insisted on clarity of purpose, clarity of intention, clarity of action,” Covington says. “If you misquoted him or misunderstood his work or put something out there about him that wasn’t true, he would push back because it was his obligation to do so. … He was always pretty darn sure he was right, and I think time has revealed that he was. … Once you look at everything he was experiencing with hindsight, you realize he was right. … I don’t know if that makes him a curmudgeon or not. I just think he was holding consciousness for an entire time.”

Still wrote to Betty Parsons, who had been showing his work alongside Pollock, Rothko and Barnett Newman, in 1951, stating that he was withdrawing his work from public exhibition. “It is simply that in this particular issue of exposing my work a network of associations and evaluations entirely at variance with the implications of my act in painting are brought to bear,” he wrote. “I find these not only futile but disturbing in many ways.”

In Covington’s play, Parsons’ response to this letter is, “Good for him. Sad for us.”

His counterparts, even those who had signed the infamous “Irascibles” letter withdrawing their work from a Metropolitan Museum of Art show they felt was giving the public a “dumbed-down” version of abstract expressionism, went on to paint commissioned works.

But Still refused to compromise for the sake of a sale.

“He would have someone interested in his paintings and then they would say, ‘I’d like one of your paintings,’ and he would say, ‘Well, I’ll think about it, and then I’ll also decide which one you get,’” Freed says. “So the typical thing was to offer two paintings and say ‘Do you want either one of these?’ and if the person said no, then he said, ‘Well, I guess we won’t have a deal then.’ … He would decide what the match was between an individual and the painting he was willing to sell.”

Clyfford demanded solo status for his art when it was exhibited, which drove him to take his work to a gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., that would show it alone, and led major museums, including the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to host solo exhibits of his work in the years just before his death.

“The final show at the Met … it was the largest exhibit ever given to a living artist at the time that that happened,” Freed says. “And he knew he had colon cancer at the time of this, and so it was quite a tragic but dramatic finish to his life to have such a major exhibition.”

“He thought there was an ideal way to see his art,” says Dean Sobel, director of the Clyfford Still Museum. “I don’t think he felt this was only due to him, but he believed in it enough to forego the money. … It’s not ours to quibble with how he wanted to have his art shown.”

This first exhibit at the museum arranges Still’s work in the order it was made, grouped by place. As visitors move through the galleries, they track Still’s evolution from a style that bears the marks of European influence to one increasingly advanced and original. Expressionistic human forms, their faces distorted and limbs elongated, become approximated by skeletal or bonelike structures, traces of hair and a line like a profile. Eventually, those motifs vanish in favor of rising vertical forms, which later give way to torqued masses and flamelike touches of color in compositions that refuse to acknowledge the boundaries of their canvases.

“There’s a kind of continual emptying out, but never emptying out of meaning or even, kind of, subject matter,” Sobel says. “The subjects or what’s embedded in the paintings don’t change. It’s how we choose to describe them that has changed.”

Traces of European art — which took geometry as central to its abstraction, leading off from Cubism — vanished by the mid 1940s as Still began to forge his own path.

“You see this line in his abstract paintings … it’s kind of what’s left of the figure. So again these artists, I think not just Still, but these artists were very interested in having subject and some kind of meaning behind these pictures,” Sobel says.

“They’re just not pretty colors and shapes. They’re meant to be expressing kind of universal timeless themes.” see STILL Page 21

Before, “people would get this energy audit report and it would sit on their kitchen counter for months and months and months,” says Yael Gichon, residential sustainability coordinator for the City of Boulder. “That was identified as one of the biggest barriers, was getting people from audit to action. So the one-step shop and the advisor, it was that hundredth monkey theory.”

Since June, participation in the program has snowballed, particularly among landlords seeking to get a jump on SmartRegs’ 2019 energy-efficiency deadlines.

About half of Boulder’s homes are rentals.

“We have currently reached/enrolled [through advisor services, upgrades and rebates] more than 3,400 homes and more than 1,400 businesses,” says Beth Beckel, an energy efficiency and sustainability specialist with EnergySmart.

About $3.6 million has been spent so far in the local economy upgrading buildings, says Mazal.

EnergySmart’s goal is to see at least 10 percent of homes —10,000 countywide — and 3,000 businesses upgraded before funding ends in May 2013.

City officials envision the program helping to usher in an energy-use decline.

According to the Community Guide to Boulder’s Climate Action Plan 2010/2011 Progress Report, “With the launch of EnergySmart services and SmartRegs in January 2011, reductions in residential energy consumption are expected in the 2011 inventory, even as the number of housing units may continue to slowly increase.”

ueled by federal David Neiger of grant dollars and Populus conducts a blower door test powered by a team of advisors, the EnergySmart program is proving catalytic in the way it helps people take action after receiving an energy audit.

“We’re presenting nationally on this model because of our conversion rates,” says Boulder County Sustainability Coordinator Susie Strife.

More than half of EnergySmart program participants take steps to improve their homes after receiving an energy audit, Strife says.

That’s compared to a national average of about 15 percent who make a similar conversion, according to the “Community Guide to Boulder’s Climate Action Plan 2010/2011 Progress Report.”

As late as August, I was wondering if there would be enough films to fill a list of 10. Then came the fall movie season and everything changed.

Overall, 2011 will be remembered as a mediocre year for cinema. But the bright spots burned really, really bright.

These 10 films from 2011 were very worthwhile.

1. Moneyball: Director Bennett Miller used the factbased story of Billy Beane, the Oakland A’s manager who thought outside the box, to illustrate the ways in which every conceivable industry has been forced to transform to survive in the brave new online world. The script, written by the formidable duo of Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian, made dry subject matter such as budgetary constraints and salary negotiations utterly absorbing, and the performances

by Brad Pitt as Beane and Jonah Hill as the young statistician who becomes his advisor brought humor and warmth to what should have been a somewhat dull movie. Instead, Moneyball was funny, thrilling, illuminating and affecting.

Like the best sports movies, it transcended its genre to become a resonant commentary on contemporary culture.

Melancholia 2. Melancholia: Lars von Trier’s first film born out of his bout with depression, 2009’s Antichrist, was an intimate study of a married couple mourning their dead son who did horrific, unwatchable things to each other. Melancholia is also about depression, and it, too, centers on two characters, sisters (Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg) struggling to understand each other.

A Separation: This deceptively simple drama from Iranian writerdirector Asghar Fardahi, about the consequences following a A Separation married couple’s legal separation, is nothing less than a miracle — a movie that holds its own with literature of the highest order, and an uncommonly wise and empathetic study of familial bonds and the great pain we can inadThe Tree of Life vertently cause to the people we love the most.

The fact that the movie doubles as a commentary on the rules and mores of modern-day Iranian society is a bonus. A masterpiece.

(Opens Jan. 27) 4. The Tree of Life: The most audacious — War Horse and beautiful — movie of the year, the story of a family in 1950s Texas seen primarily through the eyes of three brothers. Director Terrence Malick captures the essence of childhood like no other filmmaker before, but his vision is expansive enough to include a flashback to the Big Bang, conversations with God and an interlude involving dinosaurs. The movie grapples with big themes in a daringly poetic manner, including how the ideologies of our parents are permanently imprinted on us, sometimes for the worst. The film is probably too ambitious — this is the rare kind of picture where you wish Sean Penn’s performance had been cut out of the movie entirely — but despite its flaws, The Tree of Life is a monumental achievement. Even if you hate it, you can’t stop talking about it.

5. War Horse: Steven Spielberg’s epic about the bond between a boy and his horse is a distillation of all the qualities that make him one of the all-time great filmmakers: A sweeping vision, earnest emotion, astounding action sequences, a profound love of cinema, a masterful command of camera and framing, and a narrative that uses historical events to illustrate the impact of war on ordinary people. The most common criticism being leveled at the movie is that it is too saccharine and schmaltzy. But it would take an awfully stony heart not to be moved by this tale about the ways animals impact our lives. Not everyone is going to like War Horse. But if you hate this film, you Boulder Weekly

probably hate movies, too. Sorry.

6. Martha Marcy May Marlene: Sean Durkin’s psychology study of a young woman (Elizabeth Olsen) trying to readjust to the real world after fleeing a creepy cult was the most impressive directorial debut of the year — a precise, hypnotic and hallucinatory thriller that gradually builds an enormous aura of dread and terror, then pays off in an unpredictable manner.

The final scene alone proves Durkin is a major talent to watch.

7. The Interrupters: Hoop Dreams director Steve James returned with this documentary about a year in the lives of a group of social activists and former gang members trying to stop the perpetual cycle of crime, drugs and violence afflicting a neighborhood in Chicago. As engrossing as a feature film, only everything in this one is true.

8. Poetry: South Korean director Lee Chang-dong’s sublime, heartrending drama about a woman (played by the amazing Yun Jung-hee) with earlyonset Alzheimer’s who enrolls in a poetry-writing class is both a clear-eyed lamentation on the potential for evil we all harbor and the overwhelming beauty of the world around us.

9. I Saw the Devil: David Fincher’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo may have gotten all the attention. But the year’s best revenge drama is Kim Jeewoon’s relentless thriller about a police officer who tracks down the serial killer who murdered his pregnant girlfriend.

But instead of executing the monster, the cop decides to exact prolonged, horrific revenge. Sometimes, in the name of justice, we become exactly what we’re trying to fight against.

10. Drive: The coolest, funniest, most exciting genre picture of the year, with Ryan Gosling as a stoic driver, Albert Brooks as a murderous mob boss and Carey Mulligan as a mother in peril. A towering feat of mood, ambience and imaginative direction by Nicolas Winding Refn, who constantly surprised you with sudden shifts in tone — none better than a scene in an elevator that goes from tender and romantic to brutally violent in the span of 10 seconds. As for process, Still worked with palette knives, which created a textured surface, a torn-paper quality. Clumps of glistening paint remain.

“You have the sense of the surface of the painting and the way in which the artist lays down and shows us marks and gives us that sense that they were painted by a person at a particular moment in time is all very clear. … They’re very much alive, I think, in that way,” Sobel says. “It’s looser paint handling. They’re not tight geometries and again that expressiveness, that the quality of the line is anything but geometric. It’s almost kind of ephemeral in certain ways and it almost kind of disappears at certain times and fades into the twilight.”

Still’s work also quickly abandoned a sense of central composition.

“The whole image is kind of what we’re supposed to be taking in,” Sobel says. “And the kind of boundlessness of this, the fact that things are cropped at the edges and new things are Clyfford Still Museum, 1250 Bannock coming in, it seems as though St., Denver. The last image in the exhibit, which dates from 1977, three years before his death and two years before his last painting, is 85 percent blank canvas.

“It’s almost as if things have just exploded apart, almost to the point like the last painting, had he lived long enough, would have been just empty,” Sobel says.

Visitors are often first struck by the richness of the color, he says.

A concrete background, textured from the rough-cut fir used to form it, and daylight through skylights bring the palette to its best.

Many of Still’s paintings arrived rolled around tubes, as they have been in some cases for 50 or 60 years. At least one of them was so large — 17 feet — that, had it arrived at the museum stretched on a frame, it wouldn’t have fit through the doors.

“Each one of them was a kind of lesson,” Sobel says. “Every painting is a moment to pause, look, understand. … Every now and then you come across a masterpiece you hadn’t even known existed.”

getting the canvas taut around a wood frame. Storage spaces just down the hall from the restoration room tease the viewer with glimpses of the many works the museum holds but does not have room to display. — an expected 93 percent of the collection at any given time.

Museum staff will spend the next 20 years unrolling paintings and working them through the weeks of restoration necessary to prepare them for viewing.

In the galleries upstairs, the paintings are prefaced with only brief introductions. Still never titled his paintings, and they’re marked only with the date on which they were painted and a unique number.

All information to help the visitor unpack their meaning comes from a sidelined educational gallery and downstairs, where visitors can use interactive timelines and a set of custom-built cases to come to better know the man and fit his work into the historic events surrounding it from wars and the Great Depression to the emergence of pop culture icons James Dean and Elvis Presley. Among his personal effects on display are his painting jacket, palette knives, artists materials from charcoal to Crayola crayons, his books, record collection, a baseball glove and a photo of him with his daughters standing in front of his silver Jaguar.

As they have unpacked the deliveries to the museum, museum staff has found works in books and in file cabinets. The number of works on paper believed to be in the collection has risen to 1,700.

“There’s no question that he was revolutionary,” Sobel says. “[The museum] is finally putting him into the narrative that he had written himself out of.”

The museum kicks off a series of events as a community-wide celebration on Jan. 6 with gallery talks and behind-the-scenes tours.

Other events, which continue through the end of the month, include a screening of a documentary by Amie Knox called Still, presentations by and about other abstract artists and partnered exhibits at other area museums.

“I think Still and my aunt would have been thrilled to see this outcome. They could not have imagined anything better than this.

fronauts bassist Eric Keeney is a self-proclaimed music geek. For much of his life as a musician, he played in bands that cater to music geeks — complex and technically impressive, but not necessarily conducive to an all-night dance party. That all changed, however, when a chance encounter at a college radio station opened him up to a music form that is pretty much one big dance party: afrobeat.

“It’s weird, because I came from playing in metal and rock bands in Portland,” Keeney says.

“I didn’t get turned on to afrobeat until I went back to school in 2004. I was working on this documentary about a college radio station where I was introduced to Fela Kuti’s Expensive Shit, which really turned me on to the genre.”

Going from metal to afrobeat may seem like a huge change, but Keeney had always wanted to play something a little more loose and accessible. When he moved to Boulder, Keeney found the perfect combination of a community that would be receptive to the genre and musicians who were excited to team up with the former metal bassist. In March of 2011, Keeney placed an ad on Craigslist and the Afronauts were born.

“I’ve always played music for musicians,” Keeney says, “but I also always wanted to play music that got people dancing and got the crowd more involved.

When I got to Boulder, it just seemed like this community and the folk who lived here would be really supportive of this type of music.”

Keeney says the most rewarding thing about the group has been watching the evolution of the musicians playing together.

What started as nine strangers who met on Craigslist has developed into one of Boulder’s hottest live acts. The group has started writing more original material, and they continue to incorporate new tracks into their set list.

For now, the Afronauts are keeping their band as loose and fun as the music they play. Nearly everyone in the group plays with other bands around town, so the group’s gigging and practice schedule is kept pretty light.

Keeney says they only plan to play a few times a month and they only practice about once a week. This attitude has helped the group overcome some of the standard trials and tribulations that often plague bands in their infancy. Playing to a half-empty venue is a lot more fun when you enjoy playing with the musicians you share the stage with, and those small stages seem less crowded when everyone is having a good time.

“The music is fun to play,” Keeney says, “and when you hit your stride it can be challenging to play. …

It’s nice to think of Keeney laying down a bass line in the Afronauts practice space, nodding his head in wonder at the sounds coming out of his band.

A year ago, he was a music geek with a love for a niche genre. The fact that he was able to find eight other musicians who share his love for the genre — or at least shared an openness to play the genre — is impressive. What’s more Boulder Weekly

impressive is that the Afronauts are only just now starting to come into their own. The coming year should find the group continuing to grow — still getting people out of their seats and onto the dance floor while finding their own signature sound.

“We’re evolving,” Keeney says.

“We’re writing our own material more, and I think that’s really the next step for the band. But everyone is in the same mindset, and the music is just really fun to play.”

Welcome to the pain cave. It’s a place no cyclist really wants to be, but it’s a necessary evil if you live in a cold climate.

Each fall when the weather turns cold and wet and daylight becomes scarce, cycling outside is, at best, inconvenient and, at worst, dangerous.

For those who want to keep riding, the best way is indoors. For as little as $150, cyclists can buy a trainer, a device that attaches to their rear wheel, converting their ride into a stationary bike. Voila, winter workouts are instantly as convenient as summer mornings.

Except for one pesky issue.

“After about an hour you just want to poke your eyeballs out,” said Mike Brazel, a 49-year-old racer from Federal Way, Wash.

Cyclists are constantly looking for ways to liven up their time on the trainer.

“You do things you usually wouldn’t do,” McGilvray, 26, said.

“Like listen to Lady Gaga.”

After 25 years of racing, Brazel thinks he solved the boredom problem with a pain cave that can transport him to Hawaii.

Brazel’s setup includes a rowing machine to change up his workouts, an MP3 player loaded with music and the mother of all trainers — a $1,650 CompuTrainer.

The CompuTrainer attaches to a computer and records a variety of stats, from mileage and wattage output to pace and speed. He can load different race courses from around the world — including the Ironman route in Hawaii — and watch actual footage on the monitor while the computer matches the resistance.

CompuTrainer also offers 3-D upgrades.

“It basically turns my bike into a video game,” Brazel said. “The longest I used to ride my trainer was about an hour. ... Now I can ride two or three hours and it’s not too bad.

“I think it was a good investment.”

For most cyclists, a CompuTrainer won’t fit the budget. So they improvise.

McGilvray streams videos of cyclocross (a hybrid of road and mountain biking) races free to his laptop via YouTube, then blasts classic rock and what he calls “really bad current pop music.”

Then he fires up a fan to stay cool and cranks out a workout that lasts 30 minutes to an hour.

Luke Brechwald, a mountain bike racer and co-owner of Lacey’s Joy Ride Bikes, has an old 28-inch TV and a fan set up in front of his bike in his home workshop.

Whenever he gets hooked on a TV series, he tells himself he can watch only when he’s on his trainer.

Sometimes he sets up his iPad in front of the bike to watch cyclocross race footage.

While cyclists love to hate their Pain Caves, these spaces have their upsides.

“It’s so much easier than getting all kitted up and going out or riding in the dark,” Brechwald said. “And you don’t have to play the stoplight game all the way out of town before you even start your workout. You can get in there and get it done.”

And it’s warmer.

Making it bloody good

olotov had his cocktail; I have mine — a fiery Bloody Mary, three parts tomato juice, one part vodka. Crumble in bits of crispy bacon, add a splash or two of horseradish and hot sauce for extra tingle. There’s more to this classic drink, but that’s the basic plotline, the can’tmiss equation. Stick with me a moment and you’ll know more about Bloody Marys than you do your own mom.

True, mothers are hard to know — so saintly, so selfless, I don’t even try anymore. By comparison, Bloodys are easy to understand.

Named for Mary I of England, or Mary Pickford, or a barmaid named Mary in Chicago — your choice — the Bloody Mary might be the greatest American cocktail, certainly the best with which to toast a bowl game or parade.

Purists, and pureeists, may make their tomato mix from scratch, but that time-consuming process isn’t necessary, thanks to some inspired new mixes.

Here’s how to pick one: Hold it to a harsh light, X-ray it if you will. Are there flecks of pepper in the mix? Rule of thumb, the bigger the flecks, the better the mix. A good mix almost has its own melanin, the darker the better, an almost Irish-cheeked ruddiness.

If light passes through, it is probably too thin, like the crummy fluid many bars now serve, tepid stuff with the consistency of Kool-Aid. Blah-humbug.

“There’s lots of premium vodkas out there,” says K.C. Cranfill, one of the founders of a new über-mix called Hoosier Momma. “We thought, why not have a premium Bloody Mary mix?”

In fact, I can’t think of any substance in American life with the range — from bad to good — as Bloody Mary mix.

Seeing red

Lately, bar and restaurant Bloodys are not so much bloody as barely bleeding. They’ll use good vodka, then skimp on the tomato-y stuff, when it should be the other way around.

Bar and grill bites that satisfy

oming off the holiday season, a full-course dinner may seem excessive after weeks of seasonal indulgence. Something lighter is the order of the day, and if it can be enjoyed in an unfussy environment without spending too much, so much the better. The reasonably priced happy hour menu at the Murphy’s in North Boulder ably fills this bill in a bright and lively locale evoking a textbook bar and grill.

Local stalwart Murphy’s retains its longstanding atmosphere of conviviality, being equally suitable for both families with children and the solitary diner seeking a simple brew and burger at the bar.

It was packed on the evening that friend Norma and I paid a visit, and the vibrant feel was enhanced by the presence of a gentlemanly practitioner of the art of sleight of hand.

While some diners were happily tucking into full-bore meals, we availed ourselves of the shared plates menu, a blend of bar food favorites and more gourmet options marked down for happy hour. The Murphy’s on South Broadway serves up a similar bill of fare, although there are some differences in the available offerings.

We opened our small-plate smorgasbord with two south of the border specialties, the $3 guacamole with tortilla chips, and the similarly priced Six Bite Nachos. The avocado dip was marked by an appealing textural consistency and color. However, the flavor of the main ingredient was masked by a heavy surplus of cumin. The name of the nachos dish was misleading, as it consisted of far more than six bites. For the money, it was

a generous portion, and enough for two people. The tasty mix of chips, cheese and jalapeños evoked favorable comparisons to my favorite Boulder nachos of all time, the heaping platter from the now defunct Oasis on Canyon.

In the global faceoff between the $3.25 Asian wings and the $3.99 Caribbean jerk ribs, pork prevailed over chicken. The teriyaki-glazed wings were standard bar fare, with few distinguishing characteristics. On the other hand, the Jamaican-style pork ribs possessed fine meaty qualities, namely a luxurious falling-off-the-bone texture enhanced by a tangy habanero mango sauce that nicely balanced sweetness and fire.

Other options included a pair of light seafood bites. One was a $4 crab cake, moistened with apple and scented with what tasted like Old Bay Seasoning.

While East Coaster Norma was accustomed to spicier takes on this preparation, the freshness and subtle crustacean

creaminess shone through, as the seasoning didn’t overwhelm. A lemon mayonnaise provided an appropriately delicate accompaniment, as did a side of slaw.

Norma found the $3.99 smoked salmon preparation an interesting variation on classic bagels and lox. While the accompanying strawberry sauce may not be for everyone, this light mix of capers, brie and fish displayed a surprising French flair.

Crostini made from ciabatta bread contributed a crunchy complement to the subtly smoked salmon, which was closer in flavor to fresh fish than heavily cured lox.

We ended our meal with the longrunning $1.79 “smallest dessert in town,” a modest cube of brownie paired with a petite scoop of vanilla ice cream, just enough to round out the meal. In many respects, this ending epitomized the finer aspects of Murphy’s ambitious happy hour, as it was fairly priced, of decent quality and just the right size.

His fame was such that Napoleon III’s government dispatched him to Algeria to help quell an indigenous uprising.

Rebel leaders would perform “miracles” as a recruiting tool, and the government felt RobertHoudin could counter these convincing illusions.

One of his illusions involved switching on an electromagnet to anchor a metal box to the floor.

Robert-Houdin convinced volunteers he had sapped their strength, as they had been previously able to lift the box. It’s said the magician was somewhat successful in tamping down the uprising.

Lately, I’ve also taken to studying vodka, with hopes of one day creating the ultimate Bloody Mary. One day, I hope to add an extra molecule of vodka to the vodka, creating a super vodka.

It’s like oxygen becoming ozone. One extra molecule can make all the difference. Just for kicks, I might split it.

I am merely one MacArthur “genius” grant away from making this all happen.

Until then, the best Bloodys happen at home. Order some of this Hoosier Momma mix through the mail, the best in my 40 years of research.

Thick as paint, this stuff — a mitzvah, a miracle of spiced tomatoes. For just the right bounce, I blend the spicy version 50-50 with the regular (the spicy version alone is too hot for even me).

Or, head down to the supermarket for a bottle of Zing Zang, another worthy mix.

These premium mixes are pre-

spiced and need little help. With simple tomato juice or the blander mixes such as Smirnoff, you’ll need to goose it a little, with horseradish, Tabasco, Worcestershire, cracked pepper.

In either case, a good Bloody can be a brunch in itself. I start with a highball glass, rim it with salt. Add ice, vodka, your mix, a teaspoon or two of the crumbled bacon I mentioned before, maybe a chilled jumbo shrimp.

Don’t forget a slice of lime, a stab of celery and blue-cheese-stuffed olives the size of a baby’s fist.

I am not above adding anchovies or — for cheeseheads — a wedge of smoky Wisconsin cheddar. Even a splash of very black coffee on the toughest mornings.

Then raise a glass to the winter light and toast the person who made it all happen: You. Slurp. Sigh. Repeat.

ell, I’m sure you thought, “It’s 2012, the beginning of the year, the time we all try and re-invent ourselves.” I’m also pretty sure you thought I would come out low-fat, gluten-free, no sugar, blah, blah-ing you to death. But nope, not the case. I’m giving you an awesome recipe that is fullon everything.

It was a request, and I promised myself that 2012 will be the “do as you’re told” year. This is just “do as you’re told” from readers, mind you, not every schmuck I meet in my dayto-day dessert diva trollings.

So what did a reader suggest for the first dessert of the year? I know the anticipation is killing you. Insert fake drum roll here ... Double Vanilla Cupcakes with a Buttercream Frosting.

Take that, you Johnny-come-lately new year dieters.

This is a great recipe, always a big hit when I whip them up. I believe the request came from someone throwing a baby shower. I like that she didn’t want to do mini-cupcakes, and wanted the full mack-daddy cupcake. These are almost as easy as making them from a box (ugh) and oh so much better (obviously).

I use pure vanilla extract, and a vanilla bean. Nothing beats the little flecks of vanilla streaming through the cupcake. Even if you can’t tell a difference, believe me, there is. Try it, you will like it. You will feel fancy, and don’t we all want a little fancy in the new year?

I guess this could really be called triple vanilla, now that I think about it.

There is a nice amount of vanilla in the frosting as well, so if you love you some vanilla, this is your dessert! I would suggest some delicious chilled vodka with this treat, but I am trying to cut back on the pairing of liquor with every dessert. If I was still pairing the two, then that would be my suggestion, but I’m not, so I won’t. Did I confuse you? I need to stop drinking the vanilla vodka when I’m making these cupcakes.

Double Vanilla Cupcakes with a Buttercream Frosting 3/4 cup unsalted butter (room temperature) 1 1/2 granulated sugar 3 eggs 1 tbsp. vanilla 1 vanilla bean, seeds scraped 1 1/4 cups milk 2 1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking powder Preheat oven to 350. Line two 12-count muffin tins with cupcake wrappers (or grease muffin tins). This recipe makes approx. 15-16 cupcakes.

In small bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder. In large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Mix in vanilla, vanilla bean and milk.

Combine flour ingredients slowly into wet mixture.

Divide evenly between cupcake liners, filling about two-thirds of the cup.

Bake for 15-18 minutes, until toothpick in center comes out clean (17 minutes was perfect in my oven). Take out and let cool in pan for 10 minutes, take out of pan. Cool completely before frosting.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened) 4 cups powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 tbsp. milk (might need a little more, add slowly) Beat all ingredients until smooth.

You may need to add more milk, or a tad more sugar, depending on what consistency you desire. Enjoy!

The samosa chat features a potato and vegetable-stuffed turnover smothered with onion, cilantro and curry, and is a more than satisfying choice. The Bhel Puri, a puffed rice, noodle and vegetable “trail mix,” is a citrusy counterpoint.

Iron performance

O

n the surface, former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher might not seem like a good subject for a biopic. She wasn’t flamboyant, there’s no romantic back-story, and she was more known for her steel will than her diplomacy. In these politically charged times, however, The Iron Lady is surprisingly timely, with its profile of the greengrocer’s daughter who rose through — fought her way through — the British political ranks to become one of the most powerful women in the Western Hemisphere.

The narrative roughly follows her personal history, starting with her school years and showing how she rose to become the first female member of Parliament, then prime minister of Britain for 11 years, during which time she wrestled with the recession of the 1980s, the birth of the European Union, the antiapartheid movement in South Africa, a massive miner’s strike, the Argentine fight over the Falkland Islands and the bombings and rebellion of the Irish, including frequent bombings — emotionally portrayed in the film — from the Provisional Irish Republican Army.

As Thatcher, Meryl Streep is superb. From her makeup and wardrobe to her speech and the behaviors and mannerisms of a woman in her 40s, 50s and older,

Streep vanishes in her portrayal of the Iron Lady, and it’s a wonder to behold in an era where films are about their stars as much as they are about the characters in the movie. It’s the anti-Tom Cruise, if you will.

The film opens with a touching scene where Thatcher is retired, her husband Denis (played well by Jim Broadbent) has passed away a few years earlier but is still very much a tangible, physical presence to her, and she has eluded her minders and gone down to the local grocers for a pint of milk.

Shocked at the price, she comes back and discusses it with Denis. Except he’s been dead for a few years to everyone but Thatcher.

In addition to a fascinating and reasonably neutral political narrative that focused on Thatcher and the cost her family paid in her single-minded devotion to her career, The Iron Lady was surprisingly touching and more than once I felt a wave of emotion sweep over me as I watched her children fight for attention,

hile I enjoyed the 2009 Guy Ritchie reinvention of the fabled detective in Sherlock Holmes, applying the same formula in this newer film Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows proved more a boring, tedious exercise in special effects and self-conscious filmmaking and less an engaging and narratively ingenious film.

In the original books by Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes is a fastidious, rather odd bird with extraordinary knowledge and powers of observation. Famously able to deduce things from the tiniest speck of dust or wrinkle in a hem, he was the anti-hero, someone who was generally unlikeable but brilliant.

Reimagined by director Guy Ritchie and action star Robert Downey Jr. (think Iron Man), Holmes is completely different in A Game of Shadows and looks more like a homeless vagabond than a celebrated detective.

As with the books, the narrative is from the perspective of his long-suffering companion and friend Dr. John Watson ( Jude Law), who applies his medical background and experience to aid in solving particularly perplexing mysteries.

Except in A Game of Shadows, there’s not much mystery, there’s not really a case, there’s no client, and the story unfolds in an increasingly baffling and incoherent manner.

a beloved advisor killed in an IRA bombing, or her longsuffering husband Denis sit on the sidelines as he realized yet again he couldn’t compete with her passionate love of service.

Still, the best part of The Iron Lady is Streep’s performance. It’s truly that good.

The film itself is a touching and engaging biopic, but will ultimately be of more interest to students of history and those who seek a sense of the battles she had to fight as the first female member of parliament and the first female head of a Western power. Well worth watching in this context, it’s a reminder of the power of cinema to let us peek into the life of a powerful, amazing woman.

ing Mary for the rest of the film and forcing Watson to reluctantly take on this, their last case together.

The special effects are impressive, but even there the innovations of the first film are overused in this sequel to the point where it’s bizarre and at one point even breaks the narrative wall. Near the end of the film, Holmes plots out the specific moves he’ll use in a fight against Moriarty, who then looks at Holmes and says, “two can play at that, sir” and similarly plots out, in graphic slow motion, his anticipated moves in the upcoming scuffle.

But how does Moriarty know that Holmes was figuring out his attack?

I’ve always been a fan of the enigmatic, brilliant Sherlock Holmes, but I think that from a cinematic and narrative perspective Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows leaves a lot to be desired. It’s visually pretty, but there’s much that doesn’t make sense. Ritchie and Downey have created a completely new Holmes that has nothing to do with the fictional creation of Doyle, and while it’s entertaining, it’s also overly long, tedious and confusing as heck. I’d wait until it’s on DVD and make sure you’ve got some popcorn to munch on during the overly long later scenes.

The Adventures of Tintin Based on the popular comic books, this motion-capture animation feature by Steven Spielberg can’t seem to shake the limits of its mo-cap technology. Tintin (Jamie Bell), and his dog Snowy, come into possession of a model sailing ship, which contains a clue to the whereabouts of a vast treasure. Our boy-man hero then becomes the pawn in an age-old duel between the alcoholic Capt. Haddock (Andy Serkis) and the sinister Sakharine (Daniel Craig).
