Take immigration. “An invasion,” screeches The Donald, “a national emergency!” “The caravan is coming” he clucks excitedly, including “criminals and unknown Middle Easterners.” “Build that wall!” Whew — Chicken Little could take fearmongering lessons from this guy.

So, in the name of protecting us from an apocalypse that exists only in his own

scheming head, Trump has misused our nation’s Army, autocratically suspended America’s asylum laws, allowed border agents to tear-gas migrant mothers and children, separated thousands of children from their parents, cruelly incarcerated toddlers in locked-down tent camps, created chaos in our immigration court system, and vaingloriously proclaimed that we taxpayers fork over $5 billion to start building a ludicrous Great Wall of Trump in his honor.

Aside from the fact that there is no “crisis” of asylum-seekers overrunning our border, is there anything that a real president might do about the increased flow of families desperately fleeing Central America? Yes! For example: Instead of mindlessly sending troops to the border, the real

need is to move in a battalion of extra immigration judges and customs officers to quickly adjudicate the swelling backlog of asylum cases. Also, greatly expand U.S. support for international refugee programs in Central America and Mexico so asylum claims can be processed without mass migrations to the U.S. And stop condoning the vicious forces pushing people to flee Central America, from police repression to the predatory practices of our own corporations.

But that would require a competent leader in the White House — not a peevish president who stamps his tiny feet and throws a Trump tantrum in a pathetic attempt to get his way.

n the not-too-distant past, pregnant women going into labor had few options to manage the pain of delivery. In fact, they had two options.

“Traditionally it’s been you get an epidural or you get nothing, which one do you want?” says Dr. Kristen Wolfe of Boulder Medical Center. “But, really, the more appropriate thing might be something in the middle.”

“Definitely there’s a thought out there that one intervention begets another intervention and it’s a spiral and you end up with a C-Section,” says Wolfe, who delivers at Longmont United Hospital.

Longmont United recently added nitrous oxide to its list of pain management techniques. At low concentrations, nitrous oxide is a pain and anxiety reliever with few side effects for the mother and child. At both Longmont United and the labor and delivery unit at Boulder Community Health’s Foothills Hospital, which has been using nitrous oxide for almost three years, women can self-administer the gas through a mask.

“The nitrous oxide can play a role for somebody who doesn’t quite feel like they need an epidural but wants something to control their pain during labor,” Wolfe says.

Nitrous oxide also allows women to get up, walk around, and use other pain management techniques that an epidural wouldn’t allow them to use.

“The thing about nitrous is it’s in and out of the body really, really fast,” says Lisa Allen, the Family Birth Center director at BCH Foothills. “You inhale [nitrous oxide] and a couple inhalations [of oxygen], and it’s gone from the system. It takes the edge off. It seems to work better for lighter contractions, but we can also use it after delivery, if there’s any issue with delivering the placenta.”

Still, the nitrous oxide is not a perfect replacement for the epidural, Wolfe says.

“It’s dramatically less effective than an epidural ... but it can be comforting and distracting,” Wolfe says. “It can help somebody get through a tough period in a labor. But for somebody looking for something that’s excellent pain relief for contractions, the nitrous is not going to fit into that box.”

With low rates of epidural use among local women, Boulder County hospitals are finding unique ways to manage labor pain by Matt Cortina In just the last few years, Boulder County hospitals have embraced new pain management tools — everything from nitrous oxide to virtual reality — and have made a conscious decision to phase out opioid use. The change has been supported by Boulder County mothers, who choose to use epidurals at relatively low rates (less than 50 percent at some hospitals), and who are eager to try these new and innovative ways to manage labor pain.

Nationally, the rate of women who choose to use epidurals is around 70 percent, though many of the doctors, nurses and midwives we spoke to for this story say hospitals they’ve worked at previously had a rate closer to 80 percent. There are plenty of reasons why the epidural rate is lower in Boulder County — a strong commitment to naturopathic and holistic medicine, a desire among local women to be more active during labor, and skepticism and wariness of medical intervention, particularly one that 8 January 3, 2019

plan. Allen says women delivering at BCH are encouraged to share a comprehensive birth plan with the labor and delivery team and investigate all the tools and techniques available.

Many of the unique pain management options women can choose in delivery involve distraction. At BCH, women can utilize the TENS machine, which sends a low-voltage electrical current to pads strapped on a woman’s back.

“It tricks the mind into focusing on something else so you’re not focusing on the pain,” says Charlotte Wilkes, a certified nurse midwife at BCH Foothills. “So you can turn it up or down depending on how much stimulus you want. Some people, just a little of it is enough to get the brain thinking something else, and sometimes they need a lot of it.”

On a trial basis, Allen says BCH brought in virtual reality equipment to help women manage their pain in labor. Women wore headsets plugged into a virtual reality program on their phones. The programs showed either serene scenes, like a beach with crashing waves, or mind-consuming games, like one in which patients shoot floating objects by staring at them. It wasn’t worth all the fuss it turns out, Allen says.

“Both moms and nurses felt like it was really cumbersome,” Allen says. “One of the moms felt detached from what was happening with her. ... The goggles are big and kind of heavy, and then if your phone falls out, it’s too much fiddling around.”

Virtual reality, nitrous oxide and the TENS machine have all been around for decades in various forms and for various uses, but it’s only in the last few years that they’ve been used during labor and delivery. In fact, it’s the repurposing of old techniques that marks the biggest innovation in labor and delivery. A concerted effort to reduce opioid use in hospitals around the country has contributed to doctors administering drugs like fentanyl less often. But in terms of finding a new wonder drug, Allen says she’s eager to bring in new techniques and ideas, but rhetorically points out, “labor has been around for how long?”

“I’m not sure if there’s anything else out there that’s going to be new and great in the labor and delivery world in terms of pain management,” Wolfe agrees, adding that epidurals are so effective and so relatively low-risk that there isn’t much incentive for innovation from the pharmaceutical industry.

What is changing though, and is getting a case study in Boulder County due to its low epidural rate, is a commitment to trying multiple “alternative” pain management techniques. Every woman’s pain tolerance is different, so what works for one woman might be useless for another.

“We are all hard-wired differently,” Wolfe says. “I have seen people come in with strong labor contractions, and they’re seven centimeters dilated and they’re like, ‘I’m fine.’ I think they’re truly having a different experience than someone who’s four centimeters dilated and is in miserable pain. We all experience pain differently in our brains.”

That’s why having a suite of options is beneficial. BCH is installing ladders on some delivery room walls, so women can climb, hang and take the weight off their backs. Balls of various shapes, both stored in-house and brought in by pregnant women, help reduce pain. Different breathing and meditative exercises have arisen in recent years, and both Wolfe and Allen have no preference over which a woman chooses, as long as it’s effective for her. A technique called spinning allows physicians to move the baby, while still in the womb, into a position that alleviates pain and makes delivery easier. Doulas (trained birth coaches) help guide women through pain and can help communicate to medical professionals what technique or tool might be most effective. All are now offered to women as the myth that epidural use is the only or best pain management tool is getting busted.

These techniques are also good alternatives to have on hand in case of an emergency. Because of the low rate of epidural use, anesthesiologists aren’t always on-site at local hospitals, which means women who choose an epidural may have to wait 15-20 minutes for the physician to arrive and set up. It is, however, a myth that there’s a window in which women can receive an epidural, and if that window passes, they can longer receive one.

“We can do an epidural at almost any time,” Wilkes says. “Unless [the baby’s] head’s crowning, that’s not a good time not to get an epidural. ... But it’s a myth not just with patients and clients, it’s a myth with [some] providers and anesthesiologists as well.”

Still, there are reasons why an epidural might be the most effective option.

Wilkes says if a woman’s delivery is not progressing, an epidural can help hasten the process. And though Allen says there is absolutely nothing wrong with women choosing an epidural, the range of pain management tools available to Boulder County women should encourage them to at least take a second a look.

“Epidural rates are high [nationally] because people think that’s what you do,” she says. “But it shouldn’t be the default.”

hen the Fourmile Canyon fire destroyed David and Emily Takahashi’s home in 2010, they had no idea that they were starting down a long and fruitful path to sustainable living. They lost almost everything except for each other, but from the ashes of that disaster a new energy independent home was born.

In the aftermath of the fire, they moved into a 60-year-old home in Boulder’s Martin Acres.

Built in 1954, it was, though beautiful, no model of energy efficiency. It depended completely on the grid, leaked heat and ran on inefficient appliances. It was like an old ship, and in light of the increasingly urgent climate situation, they decided it was their duty to environmentally renovate it.

“A lot of people do this work and they’re thinking, ‘How do I save money?’” David says. “But for us, the end game was always, ‘How do we set ourselves up like a boat on the ocean?’”

But where to begin? The question was almost

paralyzing in scope, he says. So they started with what they had.

In October 2015 they hired Green Tracks Colorado to do an energy audit on their home.

They wanted to set a baseline against which they could measure their improvement and their distance along the path to energy efficiency.

“The energy audit is essential,” David says. “It sets your limitations, priorities and timelines.”

That audit revealed that their Home Energy Rating System (HERS) score was 190. Developed by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET), the HERS index is the nationally recognized system for calculating a home’s energy performance and measures a building’s energy efficiency. A house with a HERS score of about 100 meets most current industry standards for energy efficiency, while a score of 150 means a house is operating 50 percent less efficient than the current standard.

was simply unacceptable. So, they resolved to reduce it.

That was when the real work began.

“Check this out,” David says, unzipping a black nylon case and removing a small gun-like object, “This is the real deal.” He points it at the nearest wall and an infrared image pops up on the display, showing the temperature difference between his kitchen window and the wall beside it. “This came in very useful when we were closing up all the seams.”

This was the first order of business: they had to seal up the house. The Takahashis realized they were losing a lot of energy through single-panel windows, improperly sealed doors and attic fans.

Using his trusty infrared detector, David insulated their home one seam at a time, one triple panel window after the next, laying plastic down over the crawlspace gravel and replacing their conventional leaky attic fans with a “quiet, selfinsulating whole house attic fan.”

With the existing ductwork, they also replaced their old, inefficient gas furnace with air source heat pumps, taking them one step closer to total efficiency.

“Our last natural gas consumer in the house was our hot water heater,” David says. But the Takahashis were eager to get rid of their natural gas line — it was a thorn in the side of their increasingly efficient home, and it needed to go.

Without hesitation they replaced their water heater with another air source heat pump. They also opted to pay more for wind-generated electricity.

And just like that, on a crisp day in January 2017, their HERS score didn’t just meet the standard of 100, it offi-

With their consumption of natural gas energy terminated, they eagerly turned their eyes to the production side of things. How could they start generating their own, sustainably sourced energy, David wondered.

He began calculating the solar potential for their home — measuring the roof area, trimming back some of the trees that blocked direct sunlight, and researching solar panel systems that could both generate energy, store energy and even, if there was ever an excess of it, sell it back to the grid.

It took over a year to install (largely because of permitting logistics) but when the solar panels were all up and independently working, that’s when David and Emily began to feel fully autonomous, completely untethered from the grid.

“Our HERS score went from 190, to zero, to minus-15, to minus-50,” David describes. “We’re now a net-positive household.”

And that feels really good, both David and Emily agree. It may not have been the easiest or the cheapest endeavor, but it gave them complete energy independence. And that in itself, David says, was well worth the effort.

Their boat is now floating all on its own.

Learning to let go One climber’s story of loss, recovery and relentless movement

B

ob Jamieson thinks he’s a regular guy. After a 30-foot fall shattered his ankle and broke some ribs, his back and a wrist three years ago, Jamieson climbed the Diamond’s face on Longs Peak this past August, his 80th attempt or so up the iconic mountain in some capacity. He may think he’s regular for someone from Boulder, but his story of recovery and tenacity amid tragedy and misadventure is anything but normal.

Early on the morning of Dec. 28, 2015, the 61-year-old was climbing by himself at the Boulder Rock Club, like he’d done countless times before.

After about six climbs, Jamieson decided to give a particularly challenging route a try. But in “a moment of inattentiveness,” Jamieson forgot to clip into the auto belay, he says. As he was about to top out, he fell, hitting the crashpads below.

“I was just trying a hard route for me and was just focused on the route and didn’t clip in,” he says, shaking his head. “I’m right in the perfect age, experienced

climber, 55-65, and that’s the people who do that. It was a stupid accident.”

It all happened so fast. Jamieson didn’t have time to process the fact that he was falling.

When he woke up, the paramedics were working on him at the bottom of the wall. “I was really hoping I was dreaming it at first, but then it was obvious that I wasn’t.”

He had a concussion, two fractures in his lumbar spine, a broken wrist, a couple of broken ribs and a “shattered” left ankle — his talus, tibia and fibula bones all broken, the ankle joint disrupted.

A climber for more than four decades, he’s experienced enough to know that a lot of people aren’t so lucky. If he’d been outside, climbing somewhere remote like he often does, the outcome may have been tragic. “There have been many things that made me more attentive,” he says, “but apparently not enough.”

There was the roped fall in 2010 when he swung about 13 or 14 feet, shattering his heel and ankle as he hit a “little ledge” while leading a pitch in Eldorado Canyon.

“I came back from that. It was a major surgery, the screws are still in there,” he says.

Then there was the fall that he hasn’t quite come back from, the one that’s affected him since 1984, the one that killed his younger brother, Lee. • • • Jamieson started climbing in 1973, learning the sport around Lumpy Ridge shortly after his parents moved the family to Estes Park just before he started high school. Nearby Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) soon became a second home. “It is hard to express how much the Park has been a part of me,” he says, having hiked, climbed and skied the mountainous terrain in every season almost his entire life.

Jamieson continued to climb while attending Colorado State University in Fort Collins, then worked as an adventure photographer for a bit, mainly filming ski mountaineering expeditions, see LET GO Page 16

and as a climbing guide with Colorado Mountain School. “You didn’t have to be good back then, you just had to know where the climbs were and stuff,” he says, insisting he really is just average.

Jamieson climbed Denali in 1976, took a mountaineering trip to South America in 1978 and completed a winter ascent of the Grand Teton in 1979. By 1980, his brother Lee had become his main climbing partner, despite the fact that Lee was 6 years younger and only 16 at the time.

Jamieson taught his brother everything he knew, and the two often climbed together in both RMNP and Wyoming’s Wind River Range. While climbing in the latter, lightning once knocked them from an exposed ridge leaving them dangling from their anchor on a vertical wall.

Miraculously, both were uninjured that day.

In 1981, Jamieson, Lee and a couple of friends spent 37 days traversing the Saint Elias Mountains in the Yukon Territory in an attempt to climb Mt. Kennedy. They ran out of food and missed reaching the summit by 500 feet, as a five-day snow storm forced them to retreat. “By the end of the trip we talked about M&M’s as if they were people,” Jamieson recalls.

“Almost every page of Lee’s journal talked about food, and I still use his journal for a recipe for banana bread that he wrote on that trip. ... It was a life changing experience for us.”

The next year Lee joined Jamieson and his best friend to this day, Andy Thamert, on an ascent of Mt. Waddington in British Columbia. What was planned as a five-day trip ended up taking the group nine days, and once again food and other people were scarce. While rappelling down, Jamieson knocked a rock loose that hit Lee in the knee and “caused a very challenging final descent,” Jamieson remembers. Although Lee recovered without the need for surgery, Jamieson was shaken by the experience.

“I felt a huge responsibility for Lee, 16 January 3, 2019

partly because he was so much younger and I was almost like a parent, partly because I had knocked the rock that hit him, and partly because I had taught him climbing from the beginning,” Jamieson says.

Their last climb together was right in the middle of the Park, up the North Face of Hallet Peak. “The Park was home for us and we loved climbing there,” Jamieson says.

A few days later, Lee died.

On July 1, 1984, Lee, along with another climbing partner, left early to climb Notchtop in RMNP before having to be at work in downtown Estes by 1 p.m. “Even today, it would be considered a pretty big climb to try with a commitment to be back so early,” Jamieson says. But, “Lee had done Longs in an hour and 40 minutes, so moving fast in the mountains was normal for him.”

After reaching the summit, Lee and his partner followed Notchtop’s ridge down, heading for the steep left gulley that would take them back to flatter

ground. Just before turning off the ridge, however, Jamieson says, a rock Lee was either holding onto or standing on broke loose and Lee plummeted 150 feet into the gulley below.

“We had done this climb and descent several times together — it is great and exposed, and we both liked the descent route right along the ridge crest, which I had showed him,” says Jamieson, who wasn’t with his brother that day.

It’s been 34 years since Lee passed, but not a day goes by that Jamieson doesn’t think of him.

“Lee and his accident are such a part of me,” he says.

“I have wondered how my life would be different and what I would be like had it not happened.”

After Lee’s death, Jamieson didn’t do another alpine climb in the Park until 1994, Jamieson’s when he climbed brother, Lee, on Mt. Waddington in Hallet again. “It British Columbia, was like being 1982. injured without an injury,” he says of losing his brother.

• • • The same year his brother died, Jamieson married his wife, Sumi, and eventually settled into the career life, working as one of the directors for Cheley Colorado Camps, running the hiking and backpacking program, and then as benefits director for Boulder Valley School District for about 15 years. The couple has two sons, who’ve grown up between Boulder and RMNP, adventuring with their parents, although Jamieson was reticent to get them climbing.

“We tried to keep the outdoor focus for our kids to regular stuff like hiking, camping, skiing, but we couldn’t stop them being who they are,” Jamieson says. “Now that our two kids are just

about Lee’s age when he died, and they are climbing and backcountry skiing, and totally psyched up for big moments. It is challenging, but I love climbing with them.”

With a career and family, Jamieson still spent plenty of time climbing, either outside or in the gym, which, like most seasoned climbers, he considered “hokey” at first.

Up until the fall in 2015 in the Boulder Rock Club, Jamieson had never spent a night in the hospital. He stayed more than a week, recovering with the help of medical staff. With an external fixator to stabilize his leg, and the broken wrist, back and ribs, he couldn’t move on his own much. Two weeks after the fall, he had total reconstructive surgery on his ankle joint, which required four hours, two metal plates and about 30 screws. Meanwhile his friends built ramps all throughout his house so he’d be able to get around in a wheelchair when he went home.

He was in a backbrace (he calls it a “clam shell”) for about eight weeks, and a wheelchair for two or three months, unable to bear weight on his ankle, and unable to use crutches because of the other injuries. About 6 months later, the break further up his tibia had yet to heal, and the metal plate broke as well, requiring another surgery.

“I think one of the things that climbing teaches you is to deal with what is and not worry too much about the past,” he says. “Each moment is an opportunity to start over, and this accident certainly was good practice for that.”

By the end of November 2016, 11 months after the accident, Jamieson got the OK to go full weight bearing on his left leg. A month later he was climbing West Crack in Eldorado Canyon with his son. “It’s the easiest route there,” he defends.

He says his focus was walking at first, then he hoped to get back to hiking. “And then climbing was just like a bonus,” he says. “One thing that’s really helpful for me in climbing is that it’s slow.”

It took a lot of training to get back in shape for the Diamond. Jamieson went down to Mexico to climb with Bernardo Beteta, a seasoned CMS guide. He climbed in Eldorado Canyon with Steve Levin, the author of the area’s guidebook.

He went to Red Rocks in Nevada several times. He did the North Face of Hallet Peak three different times with multiple partners and he hiked both the North Face of Longs and the route from Wild Basin with his son.

with Buster Jesik, also of CMS. Jamieson says they first hiked 6 miles, sometimes on trail, often not, before climbing about five approach pitches, then starting up the 8-pitch route rated 5.10a, all above 13,000 feet.

“It’s not like 5.10a in the gym,” he says. “But we did the Casual Route, the easiest route on the Diamond, and that’s good enough.” The only photo he has is of his left foot on a ledge, the rocky cliff stretching out below. He never thought it’d be up there again.

Although getting to the top “felt remarkably good,” Jamieson says he couldn’t count it complete until he was safely back in the parking lot. The last time Jamieson had climbed and completed the Diamond was in 1983, back when Lee was still around.

A day hasn’t gone by that Jamieson hasn’t thought of his brother, he says, and he has yet to reclimb Notchtop, as well as one route up Longs. But he isn’t ruling out the possibility.

These routes “have such a strong connection to Lee that I have not repeated them,” he says. “I still may decide to go back to them — with the Boulder Weekly

After retiring in 2015, Jamieson lived out a lifelong dream, becoming a ranger — while still on crutches — in RMNP’s Wilderness Office.

He and Sumi have spent the last several summers camping in a van, helping visitors with backcountry permits and enjoying the Park themselves. He still can’t run, or get his foot in a ski boot, which he hopes to do soon. But he can hike. And he can climb.

“Every moment, every day, is [an] opportunity to start over.

Climbing is a lot about dealing with what is and just figuring it out.

Whatever has happened, has happened,” he says. “[It’s] learning how to improvise. Coming up with new ideas and new approaches to solve problems.

Learning that you generally have to let go to move.”

very year is a great year for the movies, but when was the best?

Was it 1939, the year Hollywood gave us The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington? Or was it the great global year of 1960 with Psycho, La Dolce Vita and Breathless at the top? 1967 broke the mold with Bonnie & Clyde, Cool Hand Luke and In the Heat of the Night, while 1999 explored our collective existential fears through The Matrix, Fight Club and American Beauty.

Well, time to add 2018 to the list.

Yes, 2018 was a banner year for the cinematic arts. From the nearly 700 movies released theatrically in the United States to the endless stream of titles via Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, et al., the ability to find dazzling images and bewitching sounds to shatter the soul and engage the emotions seemed endless.

Why now? Well, most still live within a short drive of the multiplex; practically every town, big or small, has a film festival of some sort; and those living in the Boulder-area had plenty of opportunities to see repertory and foreign films at CU-Boulder’s

International Film Series and the Boedecker Theatre at the Dairy Arts Center.

And while the theatrical experience will never be replaced or replicated at home (for most of us), those private spaces are where the cinematic game is changing. Whether viewed on TVs, laptops, tablets or phones, streamed or played via Blu-Ray/DVD, the cinematic archive of then and now has opened in ways previous generations were not privy to.

Take Kino Lorber’s five-disc box set, Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers, released this November. Not only does the set comprise 1,710 minutes of restored films from cinema’s early days, practically every film compiled here slipped through the cracks of classroom curriculum and film history books.

Pioneers doesn’t just revisit the past, it discovers one long suppressed.

In a similar vein, but on a much larger screen, the Cannes Film Festival debuted the documentary Be Natural: The Untold Story of Alice Guy-Blaché, the world’s first female filmmaker and, arguably, the first filmmaker see 2018 IN FILM Page 20

So, Netflix completion funds. took its wares elsewhere, and the Venice No movie or studio grabbed headFilm Festival not only welcomed Netflix lines in 2018 quite like Netflix. Was with open arms, it bestowed the top Netflix the savior of cinema or the slay- honor to Netflix’s biggest acquisition yet er of the cinematic experience? Could it — the movie that might change the way Netflix does business with theaters — be both? Every week, Netflix released Roma.

TV shows, stand-up specials and movRoma, a bigger-than-life memoir ies galore. Some were direct-to-video from Alfonso Cuarón, would be a masfare, like The Cloverfield Paradox; some terpiece in any year, but even among were phenomenal foreign films that wouldn’t have reached even a fraction of the giants of 2018, Roma stood tall.

But, more to the point, Roma was the the audience with a theatrical release, movie that sparked a heated debate such as Happy as Lazzaro; while others online and in print as to where one would have done just as well with a should watch a movie. As Cuarón told small art-house release, such as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, Private Life and the Los Angeles Times in September, Boulder Weekly

“The theatrical release is obviously the ultimate way to see your film, but also you want to have a very clear and present life in whichever form it’s going to live for the rest of its days. When is the last time you saw a Bresson film on the big screen? ... I’m a big defender of the big screen. The film was made for the big screen. But I’m also a big defender of options.”

And options the audience was granted. After rapturous applause from festival after festival, Netflix altered Roma’s distribution strategy, slowly releasing the movie into key theaters across the country — primarily those equipped with Dolby Atmos — before expanding into more art-house theaters; even striking 70mm prints for seven cities. All while giving its nearly 118 million subscribers access to watch the movie anytime they wanted, as many times as they desired, on whatever device they chose. If democracy in cinema represents a choose-your-own-viewing-adventure, then Roma is the Magna Carta.

Not to be left out, Amazon Studios continued its impressive run with a handful of notable titles, chief among them the bracing and moody You Were Never Really Here from Scottish filmmaker Lynne Ramsay; and the Polish love story Cold War from Paweł Pawlikowski.

Though all Amazon Studio acquisitions will eventually be available to Prime members, Amazon still favors the theatrical release model. Some, Beautiful Boy — a good-enough drama about drug addiction — played for several weeks while many other movies came and went. Of those, the small South Dakota rodeo drama, The Rider, from Chinese born Chloé Zhao, was not only one of the year’s best, it also contained one of the year’s best performances thanks to amateur actor Brady Jandreau.

Like most movies too small to warrant a proper marketing campaign, The Rider was booted out of theaters before it could develop an audience. Same for the stunning documentary Bisbee ’17, about the Arizona immigration miner deportation of 1917 — a movie impossible to forget but, if a $117,000 box office is any indication, a movie too few saw.

And then there was First Reformed, another 2018 masterpiece 40 years in the making.

Before Paul Schrader was a filmmaker he was a critic. His 1972 book Transcendental Style in Film may be one of the best written about cinema, but anyone who’s seen Blue Collar, American Gigolo or Auto Focus probably wouldn’t expect the director to utilize the transcendental toolkit so well. But at the age of 70, Schrader decided the time Boulder Weekly

was nigh, and made possibly the best movie of his career. And, considering it also contains a first-rate Ethan Hawke performance, First Reformed would be timeless if it weren’t so rooted in the now.

But the now is nothing more than a culmination of what was and a premonition of what will be. Years from now, we’ll look back at 2018 with astonishment and confusion: This was the year where we reassessed the past while the present fractured beneath our very feet.

Talk about a time to be alive.

ne lesson Alexander Beggins says he and his musical partner in Wild Child, Kelsey Wilson, learned early in their careers was not to get their hopes up about anything. That seems logical enough for a duo that started their group without really considering Wild Child a professional endeavor.

The two met when they played in the backing band for Danish indie act Migrant. The first time they tried to write together, they came up with three songs.

Even when that song pool grew to about 15 tunes and some musician friends joined in to back singer/ukulele player Beggins and singer/fiddle player Wilson on Pillow Talk, their first album as Wild Child, they tried to keep things casual.

“We had zero intentions to do anything with it, ever,” says Wilson, who joined Beggins for this recent phone interview. “It was kind of like this is so easy and so fun, let’s just do it.” both songs nice momentum.

There are just so many rules that have nothing to do with the music you’re making. Our initial thought was why don’t we just, like instead of picking a producer and making an album and following all the rules, let’s work with anyone that we reach out to that says yes, do a couple of songs with each of them and then for the next two years, just release a song a month and just who cares what happens?”

But as the recording sessions went on, it became clear the songs should form an album.

Now, not only does Wild Child have a charmer of a new album, the group’s lineup, Wilson says, has solidified with the arrival of drummer Tom Myers and bassist Tyler Osmond, who join Sadie Wilfe (cello), Matt Bradshaw (keyboards/trumpet) and Cody Ackors (guitar/trombone) in Wild Child.

The professionalism and growing musical abilities of the group should be apparent in Wild Child’s live shows, as the group tackles what shapes up to be an adventurous set list that will go well beyond songs from Expectations.

“We’ve been pulling out old songs that we haven’t played before and kind of changing up the songs that we have been playing for a long time and throwing in new ones,” Wilson says. “We even have songs that aren’t [released], that will be on the next record, that we’ve been playing. We’re really quick writers, and once we write a song we just want to play it as soon as possible.”

Tips for thrifty living

by Sparrow Sparrow is a self-taught visual artist, pianist and chef — and has a master’s degree in creative writing. He lives in a doublewide trailer in Phoenicia, New York, with his wife, Violet Snow. His book How to Survive the Coming Collapse of Civilization was released in May 2016 on The Operating System. We last checked in with Sparrow in 2016 during his seventh unsuccessful run for president.

elieve it or not, my wife and I follow most of these practices. (I live on an extremely low income. Last year I made $6,675.) A lot of these ideas overlap with environmentalism and ethical non-wastefulness.

1) No matter how hard you squeeze your toothpaste tube, some of the dentifrice remains inside.

When you’ve squeezed your toothpaste completely, cut the tube in half with a scissors, then dip your toothbrush in one of the half-tubes. You’ll be surprised how much white paste is hidden in there!

2) Make friends with a person the same size as you.

Once you’ve known each other for a while, innocently ask, “Do you happen to have any extra clothing?”

3) If you’ve owned a guitar so long that the neck has irreparably warped and the strings can no longer be tuned, learn to play out of tune! Study 20th century composers, especially Webern. Let your guitar’s “weakness” become its strength!

4) Jane Austen was so poor that when she wrote a letter and filled up the page, she’d continue writing perpendicular to the rest of the page, almost like a crossword puzzle. Try this! You’ll save precious money on paper, and give your friends a unique reading experience.

5) Chew your food slowly, so that it lasts longer.

Thus 14 cents worth of rice becomes 28 cents worth!

6) Instead of going to the movies, enter a church and pray. It’s free!

7) Stand outside a concert and see if someone gives you a free ticket. If they don’t, you’ve lost nothing. If they do, you have an evening of music — and a story.

8) Be generous. Give away bread, books, clothing.

If the Law of Karma is true, you’ll soon be receiving lots of free goodies. If it isn’t, you’ll still be a nice person.

9) Don’t buy a watch; just ask everyone else what time it is.

You’ll be surprised how nice most people are.

10) Think three times before you buy anything. Recently I was in a Dollar Store looking at picture frames. I almost bought one, for three dollars, then I put it back. I went home and discovered I had two extra picture frames!

11) Use dishwashing liquid sparingly. A little of it will clean many bowls and plates. My house wife and I rent out our house on Airbnb, and often I find that our guests use dishwashing liquid 10 times as fast as I do. Slow down with the dish soap, America!

12) And the same goes for shampoo!

13) If you find a pen on the ground, bring it home and write a poem with it. That pen may have good “vibes!”

14) Before going into a movie theater, stand outside and watch the previous audience leaving. If they look immensely happy, or deeply moved, go inside. If not, save your money.

15) If you see a bracelet on the sidewalk, pick it up and wear it. Why not? It will temporarily enhance your beauty.

16) Teach yourself to draw, and make birthday cards for your friends. Even if you draw awkwardly, your cards will be beloved. And it’s so much cheaper than buying soap and candles.

17) Visit a Buddhist monastery. Observe the nuns and monks. They spend almost no money, yet they seem quite happy. Perhaps they’re happy because they spend no money. Think about that.

18) Go to free concerts. You’ll find that everyone is smiling. The performers feel generous, and the audience is grateful. For some reason, a show without tickets makes human beings happy.

19) If your health permits, try fasting once a week.

Even if you eat big meals before and after, you’ll probably save a little money.

20) Learn to cook. If your own cuisine tastes good, you need never visit a restaurant.

21) Go to yard sales just as they’re closing. You’ll find a heap of miscellaneous items free of charge. I got my favorite T-shirt at such a sale: a black shirt designed by the anarchist punk band Crass. (Then I found their music on YouTube and rather enjoyed it, especially “White Punks on Hope.”)

22) “Who would not to wish to be from wealth exempt, Since riches point to misery and contempt?” asks Flavius in Shakespeare’s Timon of Athens. Write those words on a slip of paper and tack it to your refrigerator.

23) On a sunny day, put all your wet laundry on a clothesline. In two hours, your clothes will be dry — and aromatic. Gather them up appreciatively. The sun works for free.

24) See how long you can go without spending money ­— not even 3 cents. (I have gone as long as a week, but then I inhabit a small town where there’s nothing to buy, and my wife does all the food shopping. Nonetheless, it’s satisfying to have the same $20 bill in your wallet day after day after day.)

Three years ago, guitarist Neal Casal formed Circles Around The Sun with keyboardist Adam MacDougall (his bandmate in the Chris Robinson Brotherhood), bassist Dan Horne and drummer Mark Levy to record some Grateful Dead-influenced instrumentals to be played during the set breaks at the Dead’s “Fare Thee Well” concerts. The chemistry was instant and undeniable. Two albums later and it looks like Circles Around The Sun is here for the long haul.

A master of reinvention, Kilmer transforms himself into the “First American,” Mark Twain, in a comedic and moving performance that is both contemporary and reflective. The piece is based on the life of the man, Samuel Clemens, and of course his writings as Mark Twain. Tickets are $35-$80.

As one half of conceptual art duo Saint Flashlight (with Molly Gross), Drew Pisarra has been finding playful ways to get poetry into public places such as film-themed haiku on a movie marquee and a series of lost-dog style flyers that drive to a phone bank of poems. These unconventional installations have been part of the O, Miami Poetry Festival, Free Verse: Charleston Poetry Festival, and Capturing Fire’s International Poetry Summit and Slam in D.C. His first book of poetry Infinity Standing Up, a collection of sonnets, will come out in early 2019. His short story collection Publick Spanking was published some time ago by Future Tense.

‘If Beale Street Could Talk’ it would sing by Michael J. Casey

T

he infamous Beale Street belongs to the city of Memphis, Tennessee, but every city has a ON THE BILL: If Beale Beale Street. So claimed writer James Street Could Talk.

Century Theater, 1700 Baldwin, born and raised in Harlem, New 29th St., Boulder, York, on the very streets where he set his 303-444-0583. seminal 1974 novel If Beale Street Could Talk, now adapted for the silver screen by filmmaker par excellence, Barry Jenkins — the talent behind Moonlight.

The story revolves around Tish (KiKi Layne) and Fonny (Stephan James), young, in love and expecting a child. Fonny has also been incarcerated, falsely accused of rape, and as these things go, the trial continually gets postponed due to flimsy eyewitness accounts and an accuser who has fled to Puerto Rico. Tish’s mother, Sharon (Regina King), goes to bat for Fonny, but without money or resources to draw on, there’s only so much she can do.

It’s not an unfamiliar story, particularly for the poor and underserved in this country. For both Baldwin and Jenkins, Tish and Fonny’s struggle is the struggle of black America: constantly underfoot for one thing or another.

Cribbing Baldwin’s directness, Jenkins inserts a smattering of archival photographs into the narrative, which are further reinforced by Tish’s voiceover — poetic and honest like you’d except from a young girl with a million thoughts swimming around in her head.

Layne’s performance as Tish — at first timid and meek before hardening herself to the world — burrows deep inside the film. Same for James as Fonny: He knows the game is rigged but tries hard to convince himself it isn’t. In the novel, Fonny comes across like a man who has let his anger get the better of him one time too many. He has the hands of an artist — woodworking is his métier — but it’s those fists that will sink him.

Jenkins softens Fonny slightly in the movie, giving him a deeper shade of existential despair. Fonny is frustrated, frustrated that he will lose no matter what. After the movie’s central confrontation with a white police officer, Fonny throws a sack of tomatoes against a brick wall in a burst of anger. They splatter a pulpy red against the wall, like gunshot wounds leaving deathly carnage behind. Jenkins lets the image linger; no crime has been committed, but here on Beale Street, the consequences are deadly.

Assuredly directed, beautifully acted and lovingly shot, If Beale Street Could Talk is faithful to the novel, though Jenkins shaves off a bit of Baldwin’s anger. His focus is the love between Fonny and Tish, a sumptuous and elegant love that cinematographer James Laxton captures with tenderness and care. The movie works best when it stays close to Tish, but often it drifts. Nicholas Britell’s score is elegiac, reminding us that these images of a free Fonny and a happy Tish are told in flashback. They were happy once; they might be again. Oh, the things Beale Street has seen.

Located on the Hill, the coffee shop and café serves up tasty, fresh meals in a sleekly, yet minimally, designed space perfect for a work meeting or a casual meal with friends. The prosciutto and egg tartine comes with triple-cream brie slightly melted on thick toast. Thin slices of prosciutto sit atop the brie, covered in enough fresh arugula to almost make it feel like you’re eating a salad. The sixminute eggs are cooked to perfection, yolks soft but not too runny, sprinkled with salt crystals that really bring out their flavor. Pungent olive oil and a tart balsamic glaze are drizzled over the entire dish, adding to the flavor of each, delicious bite. $10.

ften, simple is better in the culinary world, and that’s certainly the case when it comes to pizza. Pearl Street’s Pizza Colóre makes straight-up, nofrills pizza with a crisp crust, flavorful sauce and fresh toppings. According to The NPD Group, the number of annual eating occasions per capita in the U.S. has steadily declined.

U.S. consumers will average 1,410 eating occasions per capita this year, compared to 1,453 occasions in 2009.

It makes sense that we are unnerved considering the latest food news and the culinary trend predictions for 2019. Here are a few facts to share around the postholiday watercooler.

Newport Jerky Company has introduced Rocky Mountain oyster beef testicle jerky. Other odd new foods include Starbucks’ piney juniper latte, Sonic’s pickle juice slushes and the Shake Shack’s eel burger. Kraft Heinz has debuted “Unicorn Slime,” edible strawberry Jell-O slime, because, “Until today, there hasn’t been an edible slime available from a national brand,” Kraft Heinz announced. Meanwhile, Mondelez is introducing Most Stuf Oreos with three times the filling of a regular Oreo because they can. ... T.G.I. I enjoyed simple pleasures during a Christmas shopping lunch with my son, Hans, at Taqueria La Esperanza in Lafayette. The hors d’oeuvres were meaty carnitas and chicharrón tacos with cilantro and chopped onion sparked by a salsa bar including fried jalapeños, pico de gallo and pickled jalapeños. The entrees were an asada torta on grilled bollilo bun with tomato, onion and guacamole, and soft, wide poblano chiles rellenos filled with melty white cheese. The beverage/dessert: iced horchata.

New in brew: Resilience IPA Rebuilding Butte County, one pint at a time by Michael J. Casey

W

hen it comes to the legacy craft brewers, few stand as tall as the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company of Chico, California. Founded in 1979 by Ken Grossman (a pioneer among pioneers) and Paul Camusi, Sierra Nevada and its iconic pale ale are synonymous with the full-flavor-beer revolution that defines the craft beer

marketplace.

Then, on Nov. 8, 2018, everything changed.

With a deadly combination of high winds, low humidity and severely dry conditions, the California Camp Fire started burning in Butte County in the small community of Pulga. It took only minutes for the fire to spread. For the next 15 days, the Camp Fire burned over 153,000 acres of land, including the town of Paradise, destroyed over 18,000 structures, caused 86 civilian fatalities and somewhere between $7.5 and $10 billion in damages. It was the most destructive wildfire in California’s history to date.

Sierra Nevada and the town of Chico were spared — but just barely. Photos posted on Sierra Nevada’s Instagram show apocalyptic doom looming on the horizon. Now the brewery is ready to help others who weren’t so lucky. The answer: Resilience Butte County Proud IPA, a fundraising IPA brewed to benefit all impacted by the Camp Fire.

Pulling some rather hefty strings, Sierra Nevada got nine malt suppliers and six hop suppliers to donate the ingredients. It even convinced wholesalers and retailers to join the effort, shipping and stocking the beer and donating 100 percent of the sales to the Sierra Nevada Camp Fire Relief Fund. And it also called the brewers — 1,400 in all — to brew the beer with 100 percent of sales going to help Butte County. No one beer is going to save the world, but Resilience is more than a start.

Made with Rahr 2-row and Crisp Crystal malt, and Centennial and Cascade hops, Resilience IPA sports a deep reddish color with a large, rocky head. The nose is earthy with a solid whiff of pine, which continues into the mouth with more snappy hops and a smooth and clean flavor. It’s a damn tasty beer — good for the stomach, good for the soul.

You can now find Sierra Nevada’s Resilience IPA in all your better liquor stores, but also check out the slew of participating breweries adding Resilience IPA to their tap list. A Denver collaborative — Woods Boss Brewing Company, Lariat Lodge Brewing Co., Launch Pad Brewery, Resolute Brewing Company, Coal Mine Ave Brewing Company and WestFax Brewing Company — tapped their Resilience kegs on Dec. 19, marking the occasion with a moment of silence before hoisting their glasses to Butte County.

More breweries are on the way, including Boulder County’s Sanitas Brewing Company, Endo Brewing Company, Bootstrap Brewing and Left Hand Brewing Company.

It’ll take years of work and an awful lot of help to rebuild Butte County. What better way to start than with a cold beer?

TABLE Boom or bust?

Your neighborhood grocery store is now able to sell fullstrength beer.

What does that mean for the craft beer industry?

f you were in a Colorado grocery store over the last few weeks, you likely saw one of two odd things: rows of empty refrigerators, or, if you went on or after Jan. 1, full-strength beer.

On New Year’s Day, a law passed last year by the state legislature and signed by Gov. John Hickenlooper went into effect, allowing grocery stores to sell full-strength beer instead of the 3.2-percent alcohol by weight (approximately 4-percent alcohol by volume,

the more common measurement of alcohol) beer they had only been allowed to sell previously. Grocery chains will also be able to purchase attached liquor and wine stores.

Meanwhile, existing liquor stores will be able to operate more than one location.

What will happen next is unclear.

Breweries, liquor stores, grocery stores and consumers on both sides of the issue have spent the last year releasing economic studies and press releases trumpeting or denouncing the change.

On one side, grocery store chains and large brewing conglomerates welcome the change because, one, it’ll lead to more sales, but, two, they say it’ll be cheaper and easier for consumers to get beer. On the other side, some craft breweries and small liquor stores say the changes will put them out of business.

Only time will tell who’s right.

The biggest change we’ll likely see in Colorado is a decrease in beer prices.

Some say that decrease is temporary and will squeeze small liquor stores out of the market, others say it’ll result in a total increase in beer sales, increasing jobs as well.

A widely cited economic forecast from the Daniels Business School at the University of Denver claims that the average Colorado household (that consumes alcohol) will save more than $750 in three years, as beer and wine prices will decline 18 percent. The study estimates there will be $485 million in annual cost savings to Colorado consumers, which will have a windfall effect and generate 5,000 jobs — perhaps take that with a grain of salt.

On the other side of the argument, though, liquor stores say those economic benefits won’t pass on to them. A study by Summit Economics commissioned by several small liquor store trade groups claims that the price decline will last only until small liquor stores go out of business, unable to compete with grocery store prices.

Those liquor stores will have to increase the price of wine and spirits to compete, and the consumption of wine and liquor will decrease by 9 percent as a result, the study says. Too, Summit found that consumption of domestic beer by the big three international producers will increase 5 percent.

But will the change drive craft breweries out of business, or will it actually help them? That depends on who you trust to sell that beer and how strong you think the craft beer consumption market is.

The DU study states that even though Colorado ranks third in the number of craft breweries per capita, it has hampered the growth of the industry by limiting their sales to only liquor stores. The study cites data from Kroger’s and Safeway that indicates over $100 million of craft beer is sold in their Oregon and Washington stores, where full-strength beer is allowed to be sold. The study claims an additional Boulder Weekly

$125 million of craft beer will be sold and will lead to 900 jobs.

Contrast that with the forecast from the liquor store trade groups, which say 8,600 jobs will be permanently lost within three years, as up to 50 percent of small liquor store beer sales will be lost within the first year alone. They extend the impact to the state, saying lost jobs means lost wages, which means lost tax revenue, to the tune of $11.9 million in state and local taxes

within three years.

The DU study tamps down fears that the changes will usher in a wave of liquor store closures, citing the coexistence of liquor stores and grocery stores in Oregon and Washington. Indeed, Boulder County’s independent liquor stores will still be the place to get the best variety of craft beer. What remains to be seen is if they’ll be able to survive the loss of revenue from sales of Budweiser, Coors and other big brands

that effectively subsidized the sale of craft beer.

The Brewers Association, which represents the thousand-plus craft breweries in the country, has taken steps to keep consumers aware of craft beer. Its independent craft brewer seal is labeled on its member’s retail items, so even as big brands and small brands compete in the grocery store, consumers will be able to find and support local craft breweries if they choose to.

t’s officially January, which means all of your (least) favorite people have already taken to Facebook to announce that it’s “their year.” Yes, 2019 is when they’re finally going to stop being trash by quitting all the things that make them hate themselves and instead be fit and rich. The first step they take to starting their new life? Dry January, aka Sober January, aka I’ve Spent The Last Two Months Eating and Drinking Myself into a Carb Coma And Now I Have No Money January.

December is about overdoing it — you basically spend the entire month racking up credit card debt and getting drunk in an ugly sweater.

So it makes sense that people all across the world chose January as a month to abstain from alcohol in order to reset their bodies and return to healthier norms after the holidays. The hashtag #dryjanuary already has 120,000 posts on Instagram.

There are many benefits to not drinking, like saving money, losing weight, improving your quality of sleep and just feeling more in control of your life in general. However, most healthy adults don’t actually need to be sober for an entire month to recover from

holiday drinking. When we drink, our liver breaks down the majority of alcohol in our systems. While this process can result in the death of liver cells, the liver regenerates quickly and only incurs serious damage if you’re a heavy binge drinker, in which case you probably have some longterm health issues that will take more than one month of not drinking to resolve.

Taking a 30-day break from a habit you plan on resuming when Stout Month starts in February isn’t going to do you much good. My very biased opinion (as someone who hasn’t had a drink in years) is that Dry January is more of an empty cultural trend than a time to seriously reflect on the role alcohol plays in our lives. This year, I’ve decided to cancel it and officially rebrand this month as High January.

High January is the month when you replace all of your booze with cannabis. It’s better than Dry January because you can still save money, lose weight and avoid liver damage this way, except you don’t have to be sober the entire time. You won’t see any miraculous health benefits in such a short time frame, but the real reward is forming new habits.

Alcohol is routine for so many people because that’s the cultural norm. Need to take the edge off after a long day? Have a glass of wine. Want to catch up with a friend? Meet at happy hour. Going on a date? Grab a drink.

Dry January is easy to do because most people naturally tend to take a step back from going out and spending money after the holidays, so there aren’t as many temptations. But every other time of year, most social gatherings revolve around drinking.

High January gives you an opportunity

to see what your life looks like when you replace alcohol with a healthier alternative like cannabis. Instead of reaching for a bottle of wine every night, reach for your pipe instead. Hanging out with friend? Sharing a bag of edibles and going for a hike is less expensive and more intimate than trying to talk in a crowded bar. Need an excuse to invite your date inside? Make a clean bong and some craft weed part of your nightcap routine.

That’s the joy of incorporating cannabis into your daily de-stress routine: There are so many options to choose the exact high you want and you aren’t limited to smoking.

With everything, moderation is key, so not everyone has to choose between being a stoner or an alcoholic. But last August, a study found that among people aged 15-49, alcohol use was the leading health risk factor across the globe. The more you drink, the more your risk of dying and risk of cancer rises, the study authors found. As a result of these findings, they concluded that there was no “safe” level of alcohol consumption.

But people use alcohol to cope for a reason, and those reasons aren’t going away.

Despite its dangers, alcohol is one of the most accessible substances in the world, which is why so many people turn to it.

Now that the cannabis movement is spreading, we have more options for the ways in which we can socialize with our friends or disassociate from stress. Unlike drinking with its extra calories and drama and hangovers and addictions, weed is a healthy alternative for dealing with life if being sober just isn’t your thing.

Here’s to the highest and driest January you’ve ever had.

Tales from the depths of the purple lagoon

he end of the year is that magical time when the piles of marijuana stories in my office turn over like a lake experiencing a hypolimnetic inversion, and the stuff that sank to the bottom over the years comes up to the top.

Here are two of the ganja-related yarns that came bobbing to the surface of the purple lagoon this time and deserve to be retold: Oct. 7, 2015, from Wikimedia Commons/Mylius the Boing Boing website: “The real cause of ‘runner’s high’ may surprise you. It’ll surprise you less if you smoke pot.” For years it has been assumed that the sense of wellbeing and euphoric lift some people get after prolonged exercise (aka runner’s high) was caused solely by the release of endorphins, hormones secreted by the brain and nervous system that activate the body’s opiate receptors and cause an analgesic effect.

Nope, according to researchers at the University of Heidelberg’s Central Institute of Mental Health.

It’s really the endocannabinoids, hormones secreted by the brain and nervous system that activate the body’s THC and CBD receptors and cause analgesic and anti-anxiety effects.

If you’re a mouse, anyway. The Heidelberg group tested the anxiety levels of healthy lab mice and then put them in cages with exercise wheels and tested them again after they’d had a good run. They found

that “wheel running increases endocannabinoids and reduces both anxiety and sensation of pain in mice.”

“In general, these post-running mice were more chill than before.”

Then they gave the mice endocannabinoid blockers, and the chill vanished.

“We thus show for the first time to our knowledge that cannabinoid receptors are crucial for the main aspects of a runner’s high.”

The moral of the story is run, don’t walk, to the dispensary farthest from your house and you won’t have to buy anything, except maybe some cheese to nibble on.

Feb. 13, 2017, from Business Insider by writer Melia Robinson: “Men’s Wearhouse founder reveals how smoking marijuana for 50 years changed his life.” Founder George Zimmer — “You’re going to like the way you look. I guarantee it.” — was fired in 2013 over differences with the company’s board of directors.

“You know, one of the very small reasons — and I say small — would be that I tended to be kind of a renegade or somebody who said what he thought,” Zimmer said. “That made the board of directors increasingly uncomfortable.”

by Men’s Wearhouse in 2013, he started an online Tuxedo rental business called Generation Tux in 2014, which is thriving. That probably has annoyed the Men’s Wearhouse board even more than his outspokenness or inhalation habits, since at the time Men’s Wearhouse was raking in more than $440 million a year from renting tuxes.

“The fact is — and I mean the scientific fact — [marijuana] is less toxic and dangerous than cigarettes and alcohol, which are the main drugs in the United States,” Zimmer said.

“I refer to [marijuana] as harm reduction,” he added. “So the way cannabis helps is, when you lose your job, you don’t go on a two-week bender.”
