Fracking unknowns

After reading the Paul Danish article “War on fracking” (Danish Plan, Jan. 12), I was left wondering why he ended up with a clear conclusion that fracking was completely OK and the response against it was unfounded, given that he points out that the combination of fracking and horizontal drilling is rather new and therefore the long-term results are unknown.

He did not address this unknown factor at all.

Mike Ortiz/Lafayette Paul Danish has been so busy defending oil companies, telling us how qualified Sarah Palin is for president, and disparaging local activists that he seemingly lacks the attention span or humility to admit where he has been wrong. Boulder Weekly’s publisher should hold him more accountable for his mistakes and misleading statements.

Just prior to the Copenhagen climate talks in December 2010, Danish jumped on the “climategate” email story. From a very biased position, Danish claimed that the involved climate scientists had been “brazenly deceitful” and that the “strength of this information” would deem any climate

change policy “certifiably nuts” and “terminally inattentive.”

Danish failed to later note that several major investigations cleared the scientists of wrongdoing or fraudulent science — although the scandal served the purpose of further delaying action on climate change. Danish likes to make fun of environmentalists for supposedly rash thinking, but in this case Danish would have us believe that the best way to set climate policy is to use rumors, false allegations and hacked personal emails. Danish wrote that there was something “rotten” in Denmark, but what was really rotten was the concerted effort of conservative and corporate journalists to muddy the water of public

mercury, a neurotoxin that spews into our air from old, coal-burning electric utilities. This toxic mercury falls into water, where it’s turned into methylmercury that builds up in fish. Many pregnant women unwittingly eat these contaminated fish, and the methylmercury messes terribly with the emerging nervous systems of their fetuses, producing babies with impaired IQs, unable to think and learn as they should.

Now, though, after 20 years of delay forced by electric company lobbyists, the Environmental Protection Agency finally came out in December with regulations to control the mercury emissions from power plants. Hallelujah — save the babies!

But wait, the lovers of the unborn are not celebrating this move to stop industry from doing gratuitous damage to children’s IQs! Far from it. Congressional Republicans are now

hy do congressional Republicans hate unborn babies?

Yeah, I know they profess to love the unborn, even considering them “persons” from the very moment of conception.

Yet, whose interest do you think these same politicos have chosen to protect when it comes to regulating an especially nasty industrial toxin that wreaks holy hell on unborn babies? That nasty is

debate with what, in retrospect, looks like coordinated misinformation.

Despite getting it very wrong on the last climate talks, Danish continued his shtick recently with the latest round of global climate talks in Durban. Danish argues that the people of the world are not going to agree to climate action, so we’d better forget about carbon reductions. He fails to mention that the demonstrations around the world for climate action in Copenhagen ranked as the largest public political gathering in history.

And, despite the U.S. abandonment of the Kyoto Protocol, more than 1,000 mayors in the U. S. have voluntarily agreed to comply with the carbon reductions, on ethical and practical

grounds. Furthermore, just two years ago, one poll showed that two-thirds of us agreed that “America must play a leading role in addressing climate change.” Danish’s strategy for climate change is to “build enough power plants to run two or three billion additional air conditioners.” Again, Danish settles for a shallow and cynical analysis of an issue that contains many complexities and risks, and he does Boulder Weekly readers a disservice.

Then Danish called the efforts of citizens who don’t want genetically modified plants on public lands here “malignantly evil.” Instead of oversimsee LETTERS Page 6

howling to overturn the EPA’s regulation of mercury, and a bunch of them say they want to kill the EPA itself to stop such “governmental interference” in the corporate pursuit of profits. Unborn babies make great politics, but they don’t make big campaign donations. The GOP goes with whom it really loves.

How ironic that the defenders of mercury pollution are “mad as a hatter” about the EPA’s protection of children. Maybe they don’t know that the phrase comes from 19th century hat makers who used mercury compounds in their work, often causing mental damage that literally drove them mad.

plifying and attacking the opponents of GMOs, Danish might actually consider their concerns. To support his generalization that “anti-GMO activists see opposition to agricultural genetic engineering … as an avenue for attacking American corporations,” Danish cites just one letter written to the Camera.

Danish asserts that “after 15 years there is a distinct paucity of victims” of GMO food consumption, but he fails to consider that there is no way to determine the effects on consumers, because GMO food is not labeled and thus its effects are untraceable.

Furthermore, 15 years is a very short time period to test a technology as radical as tampering with the operating code of life. Let’s remember that the early nuclear researchers didn’t know that handling radioactive materials was dangerous until they were dying of cancer, and that the makers of Green Revolution chemicals had no idea that they would cause hundreds of dead zones in the world’s oceans, kill untold numbers of birds and fish, and accumulate in people’s bodies.

In the same article, Danish says the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center is “as responsible for global warming as any oil or mining compa-

ny,” because they’ve rightfully opposed nuclear power over the years. If you’ve followed the center’s admirable attempts to get the Rocky Flats land cleaned of radioactive contamination, you’d realize how little attention they’ve received from policymakers. It’s ridiculous for Danish to claim that a small group of activists are as responsible for climate change as, say, ExxonMobil. It’s the RMPJ Center that’s behind the GMO controversy too, Danish claims, for “political gain.” Danish employs a straw-man deception instead of presenting a reasoned account of the risks and benefits of this new technology.

Other countries are applying the Precautionary Principle to GMO foods and waiting for longer-term studies — and their safety measures are certainly not “evil.”

In a community as educated and progressive as Boulder, I think that we would be better served by our “alternative” paper if it would provide more informative opinions. With looming issues such as climate change and food safety, too much is at stake for Danish’s narrow and overconfident analyses.

t’s time you worked for free. Why? Because there are lots of people out there who want the benefits of your labor but don’t want to pay you for it. Hey, you’re not entitled to make a dime.

If you sell cars, wait tables, or make widgets for a living, you’re fortunate.

Those items can’t be digitized, so people have to pay for them or risk a trip to jail. If you’re a photographer, a filmmaker, a musician or an author — successful or relatively unknown — then a portion of your income is being siphoned off by people who steal your product using torrent and file-sharing sites.

Chances are, a significant number of you just rolled your eyes or felt your tempers flare. After all, a lot of you feel that it’s your right to download whatever you want from the Internet without paying. But hear me out if you can.

Although I didn’t support SOPA/ PIPA, I was happy to see Congress at least exploring the issue of online piracy. I was concerned by the hate-filled anonymous rants of people who defended their right to steal — as if there were something noble about taking another person’s work without paying for it. These people probably felt it was OK to cheat on tests in high school, too. But I digress.

From the online posts, you’d think that stopping online piracy by itself constitutes censorship. But it’s no more “censorship” to stop someone from stealing movies off the Internet than it is to stop them ripping off a stack of DVDs from Target.

You’d also get the impression that people believe this is a case of Hollywood Millionaires vs. The People.

In truth, it’s Hollywood Millionaires vs.

Internet Millionaires, or Old Media Moguls vs. New Media Moguls. The average person supports the New Media Moguls because the New Media Moguls, like Kim Dotcom, whose wealth is staggering, enable them to get what they want from the Old Media Moguls — without making them pay for it.

What no one wants to hear is that piracy doesn’t hurt the 1 percent. Piracy hurts the 99 percent. And make no mistake — most artists are part of the 99 percent.

It’s a personal issue for me. I’ve written 11 novels, 10 of which are available in libraries, used book stores,

in the chains, in e-book format — and online at any number of pirate sites.

One site provides a download counter, which shows that almost 200,000 copies of my books have been stolen via that site alone.

Certainly, the vast majority of those illegal downloads would not have resulted in book sales had the content not been available. But if even 1 percent of the people who’d downloaded it illegally had purchased the book instead, it would make a difference in my life and in the lives of all the others I work with, from my webmaster to the websites where I advertise.

Jimmy Wales, Mr. Wikipedia, also a millionaire (though one who has given away much of his wealth), said our current system of DMCA takedown notices is working and that tampering with the Internet could negatively impact innovation.

I send several DMCA takedown notices every week — only to watch those same links go up again and again.

So, no, Mr. Wales, the system isn’t working.

And what about artistic innovation?

The talent required to take great photos, record moving music, make a worthwhile film or write a compelling book isn’t developed overnight. People struggle for years to become good at their craft. Nowadays the reward for years of hard work is to have that work stolen.

What’s missing is some level of honesty and integrity. Pirate sites aren’t the problem; it’s the larceny lurking in the human heart that’s an issue.

Everyone wants something for nothing.

We’ve devolved from a culture where right and wrong mattered to one where the only thing we care about is what we want. We want good grades, so we cheat rather than studying. We want entertainment, so we steal rather than saving money. And we’ve become so blasé about such things — so morally egoistic — that we don’t even see them as wrong. But they are wrong.

SOPA/PIPA wasn’t the right way to deal with online piracy, but let’s keep working toward a solution that both supports freedom and shows respect for the effort of artists whose work we enjoy.

Mitt and the Bain thing

bout Mitt Romney and the Bain Capital thing: I’ve always admired venture capitalists. But not all venture capitalists are equal.

The admirable ones are the sort who fund the start-up companies of entrepreneurs like Jobs and Wozniak. They’re the ones who enable the emergence of revolutionary technologies and ways of doing things that transform the marketplace and change the world. Bill Joy and John Doerr of Silicon Valley-based Kleiner Perkins Caulfield & Byers are examples of this type.

The less-than-admirable venture capitalists are the ones who buy existing companies with no intention of growing them or even running them, but with the intent of dismantling them and selling off their assets — or alternatively requiring the companies to take on debt in order to buy back their own stock at a premium (a practice called “greenmailing”). Carl Icahn and his pals at Drexel Burnham are examples.

Bain Capital seems to fall between the two. It invested in some startups, and it invested in some companies that were looted and shut down. Two of the former that Romney points to are Staples and Sports Authority, two retail marketing companies. One of the latter that Romney’s critics point to was GS Industries, a steel mill in Gaffney, S.C. (I’d be more impressed with Romney’s venture capitalist chops if it had been the other way around, but that’s just me.)

When Newt Gingrich called Romney out for Bain’s flirtations with the darker forms of venture capitalism, a number of prominent Republicans accused Gingrich of attacking capitalism.

They argued that corporate failures are as much a part of venture capitalism as corporate successes, and pulling the plug on the losers and selling off the pieces is just another part of the game.

So is buying underperforming companies Boulder Weekly

and clearing them out of the marketplace. And if some people, maybe even a lot of people, lose their livelihoods and their pensions in the process, it can’t be helped. Besides, in the long run, everyone will benefit.

There’s some truth to that in economic terms, but it’s a defense of capitalism that may be more damaging to Romney’s prospects than anything Bain did.

I think it was George Will who once made the point that in professional sports there are unwritten and unspoken rules in addition to the official ones.

Failure to abide by them can turn the violators into pariahs if they do it often enough.

Unspoken rules often speak to the need to refrain from gaming the system and for the need for fairness.

In the eyes of a lot of Americans, corporate raiding violates the unspoken rules. It games the system. It’s unfair. It’s a dirty trick. And when it costs productive people their livelihoods, it’s seen as contemptible, even if it is legal.

The problem isn’t that Bain may have made obscene profits. Most Americans are cool with obscene profits if they are made, as Bill Clinton put it, by working hard and playing by the rules. Official and unspoken.

Americans are not cool with people who came by obscene wealth by gaming the system — even if they did work hard at gaming it.

I think if the Republican establishment insists on conflating the forms of venture capitalism, there’s a real chance the most consequential thing that will come of it is that it may succeed in reminding several million Reagan Democrats why it was that their parents and grandparents were Yellow Dog Democrats.

The main reason the Republican establishment wants Romney is that they see BAIN Page 9

Sometimes what’s good for a Bain Capital is good for the USA. Sometimes it isn’t. Romney is a political chameleon, and that makes it hard to know if he can tell the difference.

ver since the city of Boulder purchased its Valmont Butte property, city taxpayers have been picking up the tab to pay for the environmental sins committed by more than a century’s worth of long-departed users at the site.

And that tab may be getting bigger as more ghosts from the property’s past continue to reveal themselves.

Valmont Butte has always been a magnet of sorts. It has always pulled humanity to its vista. Long before the first white settlers arrived in the area, Native Americans were climbing the gentle slopes of this unique rock outcrop east of Boulder to camp, hunt, enjoy the view and pursue a variety of spiritual practices. The Butte was important to several tribes in life as well as in death, as illustrated by the many archeological artifacts and suspected native graves that have been discovered at the location over the years. These are the original ghosts of Valmont Butte.

Later, early settlers formed the town of Valmont at the base of the rock formation along its northern side. For a while the bustling community boasted three saloons as well as a newspaper, and it rivaled Boulder as the population center of the county. Like those who came before them, when these early residents died, they often preferred to be buried above the valley floor on the high plateau on the southern side of Valmont Butte in what is today the Valmont Cemetery.

The very quality that has always made the butte popular, its improbable castle-like rock formation known as the Valmont Dike, which forms a natural spine of stone running to the east for several miles and creating the butte’s impressive juxtaposition to the surrounding plains, may well have been its curse as well.

As a result of these industrial operations, Valmont Butte has become disfigured and, more importantly, badly contaminated with

radioactive mine tailings tainted with heavy metals. While most of the miners and mill workers who contributed to the contaminated mess on the property have long since passed, the company ultimately responsible for much if not most of the contamination along the butte is still around. But not every ghost that now haunts the butte and its current owners, the citizens of Boulder, are dead. Some, such as the city personnel who made the bizarre decision to purchase 103 acres of prime butte contamination on behalf of the rest of us, have simply disappeared over time, leaving behind one mystery after another regarding the hidden dangers and financial landmines buried below the surface of the butte.

But of the many people who have had a significant effect on the Valmont Butte site and its contamination, perhaps none have impacted the Boulder landmark more than the men and women who have worked for the various local, state and federal agencies charged with evaluating, monitoring, remediating and otherwise protecting the public from the dangers that have existed on the butte for more than a century.

An examination of the public record regarding Valmont Butte reveals a wild

collection of contradictory assumptions, reports, policies, recommendations, actions and opinions spanning the past 50 years. These contradictions and inaccurate assumptions may yet come back to haunt City of Boulder taxpayers beyond anything contemplated by those who have obligated them to help pay for the past sins of some of the site’s ghosts.

This article is the first in a series of stories concerning Valmont Butte, including the approximately 103-acre parcel currently owned by the City of Boulder as well as other surrounding properties. Telling the story will require multiple installments because it is impossible to describe the very important nuances of the contamination problem in, on and around the butte, as well as the possible solutions to the problem, without a fair amount of data downloading and the occasional splitting of hairs.

For instance, examining topographic maps from the turn of the century through the 1950s to counter the modern assumptions of some regulatory agencies regarding the topography that underlies the contaminated tailing ponds

on the property is not particularly exciting stuff unless you are a map maker, hydrologist or environmental consulting firm, but it is very important — potentially tens of millions of dollars important. And considering that it’s at least a possibility that the City of Boulder, thanks to certain federal laws and their interpretation, could end up picking up a sizable portion of the tab for remediation going forward, such detail matters.

For future reference, we suggest that you keep this first installment and use the maps, photos and timeline as a reference going forward. Space will not permit running the same graphic elements with each new story. We will, however, be posting these and other source materials online if you wish to view more resources from our investigation.

103 acres of prime contamination Contamination is like barbeque sauce. It has an almost supernatural ability to defy our best-laid plans for its ultimate destination. The simple act of transferring the red, sticky concoction from bottle to rib to mouth rarely goes down as intended. It’s far more likely that, along the way, the sauce will suddenly appear on our forehead, elbow, jeans and hair, with long-distance stains

reaching odd locations such as our back pocket or a sock. Unfortunately, when contamination exhibits this same quality of migrating to unexpected places, it’s neither humorous nor easily remedied, and it can get expensive.

That’s what has happened at Valmont Butte. The following is an overview of just a few examples of the difficulty of tracking, let alone containing, historic sources of contamination on and around the site.

While the rock quarrying, top-soil removal and clay extraction in the area over the last century have forever changed the appearance of Valmont Butte, these processes did little to contaminate the lands and will therefore be overlooked for the most part in our reporting.

The 103-acre tract of land currently owned by the City of Boulder (outlined in yellow on aerial photo map seen above) has been known by a variety of names over the years: St. Joe’s Mill, Allied Pile, Allied Mill site, Valmont Mill and Hendricks Mill are the most common. For our reporting purposes, we will use the name Allied Mill for the most part. see VALMONT BUTTE Page 12

As can be seen on the timeline at the bottom of the pages, a gold mill was sited on the property in 1935 by St. Joe’s. This mill went bankrupt after two years. In 1937, the mill was converted into a fluorspar gravity floatation mill by two partners from Boulder who eventually sold the mill to General Chemical Company. General Chemical was purchased by Allied Chemical Company in 1941. Allied ran the fluorspar flotation mill on the property for more than 30 years. The end product of the fluorspar mill was calcium fluoride, which was shipped to the west coast by rail.

Unfortunately, what didn’t get shipped away were the concentrated leftover radioactive tailings tainted with heavy metals that are still the dominant feature of the property.

The following is a quick description of the milling process, which can be followed geographically on the aerial map on Page 11.

The mill (pictured on Page 11) was built on the southwest slope of Valmont Butte in order to take advantage of gravity. The massive amounts of water used for the mill’s flotation process (up to 200,000 gallons a day) were pumped into holding tanks at the top of the butte and subsequently fed by gravity down into the top portion of the mill. From there, the whole process flowed downhill from floor to floor through the structure, which saved enormous energy costs. The overall property also falls downhill to the east, which also made the disposal of wastewater and tailings a matter of gravity.

The ore used by the mill came from the Burlington Mine near Jamestown.

The Burlington’s ore contained several radionuclides, including uranium, radium 226, radium 228, thallium and vanadium. As the ore was crushed fine and mixed with a solution of water and a non-petroleum oil, the oil would stick to the calcium fluoride and float it to the surface, where it could be stripped off from the rest of the tailings at the bottom of the flotation stream. The calcium fluoride was then dried and placed in a rail car to ship west.

The remaining, concentrated slurry of radioactive tailings, tainted by heavy metals such as lead, arsenic and copper, was then sent downhill to the primary tailings pond, which occupied approximately 14 acres. The primary tailings

pond is situated along the south side of the Valmont Dike, with a man-made dam on the north and a natural plateau on the west that cuts across the property from the dike and then turns to the east, forming a barrier on both the western and southern sides. This natural topography, plus the man-made dike dam, created barriers on three sides of the natural trough that sloped gently from west to east, down to a wetland at the easternmost edge of the city’s property. In order to prevent the natural flow of the contaminated tailings and water to the east, a dam made of tailings 30 feet in height was built across the eastern end of the trough to form the final barrier.

This description of the primary tailings pond is an important one, as it speaks to the ability of the contamination in the primary pond to potentially migrate to other parts of the property and even offsite. There will be additional detailed reporting on this issue of the city property’s underlying topography and its impact on the site’s contamination and remediation in the coming weeks.

Because the concentrated radioactive tailings were well above normal background levels, to operate legally, the Allied Mill site had to become a licensed holding facility for radioactive waste.

The license was issued by the state of Colorado. Because of the long half-life of the radionuclide in the soil, it was assumed that the site would always be a licensed facility no matter who owned the property. That’s to say that it was assumed that someone would always have to be responsible for monitoring and storing the radioactive material because it was never going to become safe to be around.

This licensing approach to the radioactive contamination held true for years as the property was sold several times after the Allied Mill closed. This licensing requirement suddenly changed, however, in 1999, just a few months before the city purchased the property. More details on this unusual occurrence later in the series.

Eventually, the primary tailings pond became filled with contaminated waste and starting to spill over the dam on its eastern end. So a secondary tailings pond was created to the east, beyond the 30-foot-high dam of the primary tailings pond. This second tailings pond area was

rsenic: Skin damage, circulatory system problems, increased cancer risk. Symptoms of poisoning include nausea, anorexia, vomiting, epigastric and abdominal pain, and diarrhea, in addition to dermatitis, muscle cramps, cardiac abnormalities, hepatotoxicity (liver damage), bone marrow suppression and hematologic abnormalities (anemia), vascular lesions and peripheral neuropathy (motor dysfunction, paresthesia). Chronic arsenic poisoning can result in general symptoms of weakness, general debility and lassitude, loss of appetite and energy, loss of hair, hoarseness of voice, loss of weight and mental disorders. Severe exposure can result in acute encephalopathy (a disease that alters brain function or structure), congestive heart failure, stupor, convulsions, paralysis, coma and death.

Beta particle, photon radioactivity: Increased risk of getting cancer Chromium: Allergic dermatitis and a certain form of chromium is under review by the EPA as a possible carcinogen. Workers with prolonged exposure to chromium have developed nasal irritation, including ulcers and perforation of the nasal septum, as well as hypersensitivity and “chrome holes” on skin.

Gross Alpha: Increased risk of getting cancer Lead: Delays in physical and mental development for infants and children; kidney problems and high blood pressure for adults. Lead can affect the gastrointestinal tract, hematopoietic system causing anemia, cardiovascular system causing elevated blood pressure, central and peripheral nervous systems, kidneys, immune system and reproductive system.

Manganese: Prolonged exposure to elevated concentrations either orally or by inhalation leads to responses from the central nervous system. Initial symptoms are headache, insomnia, disorientation, anxiety, lethargy and memory loss. These symptoms progress with continued exposure and eventually include motor disturbances, tremors and difficulty in walking, symptoms similar to those seen with Parkinsonism.

Radium 226-228: Increased risk of getting cancer Selenium: Hair or fingernail loss, numbness in fingers or toes, circulatory problems.

Acute oral exposures can result in excessive salivation, garlic odor to the breath, shallow breathing, diarrhea, pulmonary edema, and death. Other reported signs and symptoms of acute selenosis include tachycardia (increased heart rate), nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, abnormal liver function, muscle aches and pains, irritability, chills and tremors. General signs and symptoms include loss of hair and nails, acropachia (clubbing of the fingers), skin lesions (redness, swelling, blistering, and ulcerations), tooth decay (mottling, erosion and pitting), and nervous system abnormalities attributed to polyneuritis (peripheral anesthesia, acroparaethesia, pain in the extremities, hyperreflexia of the tendon, numbness, convulsions, paralysis, motor disturbances, and hemiplegia).

Thallium: Hair loss, changes in blood, kidney, intestine or liver problems. The primary targets of thallium toxicity are the nervous, integumentary (which produces hair and nails), and reproductive systems. In humans, acute exposures produce tingling, burning, pricking, numbness, lack of muscle coordination, delirium, tremors, and hallucinations. Chronic exposures result in alterations of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Baldness is the most common indicator of long-term thallium poisoning.

Uranium: Increased risk of getting cancer, toxic to kidneys Vanadium: Intestinal cramping and diarrhea, eye and respiratory tract irritation, typical symptoms include coughing, wheezing, excessive mucus in the nasal cavity, sore throat and chest pain.

said to be approximately three to four acres. However, aerial photos from the 1960s show the secondary pond to be poorly defined, with tailings clearly pouring out to the south of the secondary pond and covering more than the historically stated acreage.

So exactly how much contamination is on the city’s Valmont Butte property, and exactly where is it located? Good questions that both the city and the regulatory agencies would love to be able to answer, but it’s not that simple. Judging from the lead and radioactive soils map on Page 12, it’s pretty much everywhere.

As to the question of how much, the seller of the property to the city, Valmont Butte Corporation, estimated that the primary tailings pond contained approximately 40,000 cubic yards of contaminated soil, which is equivalent to between 40,000 and 60,000 tons. This is the figure Valmont Butte Corporation presented to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) in 1999 as part of its request to have the radioactive license for the property permanently terminated.

However, the EPA now estimates that the primary and secondary tailings ponds hold more than 400,000 tons of contaminated tailings, a major discrepancy from Valmont Butte Corporation’s estimate, and even the EPA’s figure may be too low.

Based on an examination of Boulder County Public Health (BCPH) and CDPHE records from the 1960s, it was reported that 97,000 gallons of water were being used each day at the mill, and that this flow was creating 50 to 70 tons of contaminated tailings waste each day. Considering these figures along with estimates that in the 1940s, during the war effort, the mill was processing more than 200 tons of ore per day, and that other documents examined show that even in its final days, the mill was still using in excess of 40,000 gallons of water per day seven days a week, it could be conservatively estimated that between 600,000 and 750,000 net tons of contaminated tailings were actually generated by the Allied Mill. This would be in addition to the tens of thousands of tons of tailings that would have been generated by various milling operations both before and after Allied ran its mill on the property. Either more tailings fit into the ponds than has been estimated, or a couple of hundred thousand tons of con-

Sadly, for both the EPA and the city, they are both at least half wrong when it comes to the mysterious burial site of the Third and Pearl radium. An important document was found during Boulder Weekly’s investigation that describes what actually happened when the radium-contaminated soil arrived at the Allied property. The document says there was so much contaminated radium coming into the site that the first 90-foot pit became full, and a second pit had to be dug to handle all the remaining radiumcontaminated soil. In other words, there isn’t one unknown burial site full of radium on the property. There are two unknown burial sites full of radium on the property.

The barbeque sauce is spreading, and this is just the tip of the iceberg. It’s easy to see how the city’s Valmont Butte property made it onto the federal Superfund list and at one point was described by a state official as having barely missed being put on the EPA’s National Priority List, which is reserved for the 400 most important sites to get funding for a Superfund cleanup. And if that isn’t enough, in the coming weeks we will examine whether or not the Allied Mill on the city’s property may have contributed contamination to other properties, including another Superfund site on an adjacent property. Allied Mill contamination also wound up in the lakes around Xcel’s coal-fired plant at Valmont Station, potentially creating a pathway to drinking water supplies.

There are significant issues surrounding the Valmont Cemetery as well as ongoing Native American concerns that must be addressed. All of this and more will be covered in our ongoing series, as well as an examination of the Boulder/ Honeywell voluntary clean-up plan.

Workers are scheduled to start moving dirt and contamination on the property next month.

Let’s hope there are no more ghosts hidden on the site.

But we wouldn’t bet on it.

Abeles photographed lichen in Boulder and the images are now displayed so large as to be nearly unrecognizable. Their hollows are replaced in places with images, both still and video, of children’s eyes and cars.

“I think one of the really great things about the arts is it helps you to see anew, and in this case we get to see Boulder’s pollution — not in the sky, but on plates,” says Marda Kirn, executive director of EcoArts Connections, which commissioned Abeles’ piece as a way of showing climate change at a local level. “We get to see the lichen,

She wanted to bring an art piece to a non-art venue, Kirn says, and Patrick Kociolek, director of the museum, got on board.

“It’s really trying to think about how, as human beings, how can we more deeply understand how our transportation choices affect the air that we breathe, and then by extension the greenhouse gases that are going into the atmosphere,” Kirn says. “What I love about Kim, too, is that it’s not this sort of horrible didactic way, or ‘You’re going to go to hell if you don’t recycle’ kind of way. It’s more of a very loving kind of way, a sometimes very funny, self-reflective way that makes you appreciate the world in which we live and notice nature and where you are.”

There will be a scavenger hunt for lichens, puzzles to put together at the museum and activity books for children — a wealth of ways to re-engage with the environment and start exploring its resources.

“As an individual it’s so frustrating because it’s like, what can you do?”

Abeles says. “It’s about taking action, but it’s also about finding your voice. …

Without your voice, you’re kind of directionless.”

An opening celebration and talk with Abeles will be held at 6 p.m. on Feb. 2 at the museum.

Cirque du Soleil’s resident “performance psychologist” explains what makes circus artists tick

typical Cirque du Soleil show is a long way from the “Greatest Show on Earth” of the early 1900s.

Gone is the ringmaster entreating you to step right up and see a fabulous variety show, and animals and sideshows are nowhere to be seen.

The Big Top, that is, the tent where it all goes down, is no longer a requirement either. Instead, a Cirque show offers an abstract narrative told through a variety of acrobatic circus and gymnastic acts, topped off with elements of modern dance, usually to the tune of psychedelic world music.

Non-mainstream music, modern dance and gymnastics may not sound like a formula for economic success — practitioners of modern dance, for example, are rarely known for their opulence. Yet Cirque du Soleil is enormously successful; the company expects to sell 15 million tickets in 2012 alone. Since its creation in 1984, Cirque has ballooned from a small circus troupe into a multinational company that employs 5,000 people, more than 1,300 of whom are performers, and has made company founder Guy LaLiberté a billionaire two and a half times over, according to Forbes magazine estimates.

act for years before coming to Cirque, and he practices his routine with nearclinical obsessive attention to detail.)

About 50 percent of Cirque performers actually spent most of their lives in competitive athletics such as gymnastics, according to Cirque’s corporate PR manager, Chantal Côté. After being hired by Cirque, athletes set off to the Montreal headquarters, where they will embark on a 16-week training program designed to help them make the tumultuous transition from athlete to artistic performer.

The transition can be tough for some.

To ease things, Cirque du Soleil offers a vast net of resources to the athletes while in Montreal, including nutrition counseling, personal training and psychological help. Enter Madeleine Hallé, Cirque du Soleil’s “senior performance psychologist.” Hallé called Boulder Weekly from Canada and explained how she and her associates make the transition from athlete to artist an easy one.

Boulder Weekly: Can you explain the difference between a sports and performance psychologist?

Madeleine Hallé: In sports psychology, most of the time there are a few key important competitions a few times a year; you’re not allowed to make any mistakes if you want to succeed or be one of the best. Here, it’s the opposite. We have, in certain context, we have more than 470 shows a year, so it’s a little bit different, just in that aspect. Making a mistake during the show, if you don’t consider the [physical] risk issues, it’s not a big deal.

Another difference for sure is the artistic aspect. Most of the athletes who are selected to come here do not have an artistic background. They are athletes.

When they come here, they have to develop those skills, which I would say is a little bit demanding.

BW: Is it a difficult transition for the athletes?

MH: I wouldn’t use the word difficult.

I would say this is, for sure, a transition.

They need to develop a capacity of adaptation. They need to understand that even if they are doing the most difficult acrobatic trick … the only way this fabulous acrobatic element can have value is if it’s included in the artistic aspect. When they understand that, the transition is easy.

I will say there is a period of a few days at the beginning where they are kind of lost. Having to learn many new things and having to let go of all the rules that they learned so far — like being the best, being first, things like that — it’s not important here.

BW: What specifically do you guys do when an athlete first arrives at Cirque?

MH: When they arrive, very often, we start with the artistic aspect. That means that the first two, three days, they will be involved in many different artistic activities. It’s really immersive. We have,

at this time, some discussion about how they feel and how they perceive this new aspect, and what are their strategies to cope with this new environment. This is the beginning. After that, they start a regular schedule. A few hours of acrobatic work, a few hours of artistic work, like dance, like theater, like percussion, like movement, like singing, and many others. ... They also have physical conditioning, and after that it’s time to sleep. They have a heavy schedule.

This is what we call the core. All of them are doing different artistic classes.

Usually we say that it takes 10 or 15 years to become an artist. In our case, we have 16 weeks. So what we try to do is to make sure we open different doors. They will be able to test different artistic activities and see which ones fit the best with them, just to have the need or desire to go through different levels. We know that at the end of the 16 weeks, they are not artists. Our only goal that we have is just to make sure that they have the basic knowledge and competency so that they have the desire to continue to be able to develop themselves artistically.

BW: Does this ingrained competitive edge actually hinder the athletes’ creativity? Is that why it’s such a problem?

MH: You know, the first move that we do when they arrive here is to make them consider that they all understand that they are all at the same level. Their competitiveness is still there, but they realize that that is not why they’re here [at Cirque du Soleil].

BW: What’s your job, what’s your capacity, in the first few days to help with that transition?

MH: The performance psychologist service is divided in many aspects. The first aspect is in education. We have weekly meetings with them, with small groups most of the time.

The second aspect is that we also offer individual discussions. If an individual wants to talk about concentration, for example, we can set many meetings to discuss different skills, different aspects.

Third, we offer counseling for any problems that they could face.

Adaptation, missing their people, homesickness, or difficulties with the language barrier, we can offer more working [assistance].

BW: Therapy sessions?

MH: We work with them in order to develop tools to help them, that could help them to be their best, to offer their best performance, so that some issues like homesickness will not interfere with their capacity to perform. It’s not clinical psychology in the sense of pathology. ... But we offer counseling, helping them to understand and put some problems in perspective.

Haunting harmonies The ‘other’ Phantom presents a different take on an iconic tale

W

hat is your first thought when you hear the phrase “the phantom of the opera?” Unless you’re an unabashed bibliophile or literary-minded Francophile, it’s almost certainly not the novel, Le Fantome de l’Opera, written by Gaston Leroux in 1910. Still, that early 20th century flight of fancy introduced the world to the grotesquely deformed music lover and catacomb dweller, Erik, he of the half mask and three-quarters madness.

Erik, known decidedly more widely as the Phantom, has become one of the most enduring characters in modern pop culture. No one can mistake the Phantom masks that crop up each Halloween, and every TV show from The Simpsons to South Park contains at least one allusion to the mad maestro. Not content merely to be referenced, the Phantom has made merry mayhem, sought sweet song and longed for love in no fewer than eight film and television adaptations of his own.

Since 1986, there have even been two big-budget musicals based on Leroux’s little book. Sure, most

people are only familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Broadway blockbuster, The Phantom of the Opera, with its crashing chandelier, wildly popular title song and movie adaptation starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum, but there is another version — often referred to as “the other” Phantom — that for many will always be the superior theatrical experience.

Phantom, by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit, was first produced in 1991, and though it premiered after The Phantom of the Opera, it was actually written a few years prior to Webber’s opus. Aside from being based upon the same source material and debuting around the same time, the two versions of Leroux’s old tale couldn’t be more dramatically or thematically different. Where Webber’s version goes for over-the-top theatricality — not too surprising given its place alongside Cats, Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar and the rest of Webber’s musicals — Yeston and Kopit’s Phantom focuses on the characters, their histories and their relationships to one another.

As Phantom opens, Christine Daee (Maggie Sczekan) sings and sells her original songs on the

streets of Paris. Every franc she earns is bread in her belly, but, more importantly, every verse sung and copy sold is another chance that someone will recognize her natural talent and give her the opportunity to pursue her dream of becoming a professional performer. Count Philippe de Chandon (Brian Jackson), a prominent patron of the Paris Opera, sees the beauty both in Christine’s face and voice and refers her to Gerard Carriere (Brian Norber), the manager of the opera company.

As bad luck would have it, when Christine arrives at the opera house she learns that Monsieur Carriere has recently been let go by the new owner, Alain Cholet (Scott Beyette). Cholet’s wife and resident diva, Carlotta ( Joanie Brosseau), immediately senses the threat the younger, prettier and more talented Christine poses and promptly banishes her to a nonsinging job in wardrobe. But faster than you can say fromage, Erik the Phantom (Markus Warren), hears Christine sing and offers to train her in secret to become the chanteuse they both know she can be.

As the rest of Phantom unfolds, we learn to what lengths Carlotta will go to keep Christine out of the spotlight and the Phantom will go to protect his muse and burgeoning love. We also learn more about the Phantom himself than in any other version of the story with which I am familiar, and that is what makes Phantom such an emotionally resonant work.

Rather than remaining a cipher, Phantom’s Erik is a fully fleshed-out character with a history and motivations that allow the audience to connect with him in a singular way.

Though it may be less glitzy than the other one, Phantom packs a much stronger emotional punch. On the night I attended, a boy around 6 years old at the next table began to cry during the second act. It quickly became clear that he was not crying because he was tired, bored or spoiled. He was simply overwhelmed by the love of Erik for Christine, the tragedy of Erik’s existence and the beauty of the show’s presentation. He probably couldn’t have conveyed or, perhaps, even conceptualized it, but he was weeping for all that is wonderful and beautiful and painful in the world. What better recommendation could a musical have?

Kottke may derive some grudging appreciation for YouTube because, in a sense, it has a memory that can rival his own. Though maybe a little poorer, unframed by 12-string Appalachian fantasias.

But if YouTube can capture a moment, it cannot capture context, nor irony, nor the gentle absurdities of This Life. Nor the distance traveled.

“I remember the first real studio I walked into,” Kottke says. “I was with my manager, who had been recommended to me by John Fahey, and his partner, a guy named Seth.

“Delbert [McClinton] and Glen [Clark] were putting some vocal on some tracks. That was the night I met T Bone [Burnett] the first time; he was producing it. And the sound came up and it was just so goddamn good, I said, ‘I quit. I do not belong in this job.’ I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“When we were done, we walked out to the street, and Seth looked in the back of my red Valiant that I had driven out from Minneapolis, and he saw my home haircutting kit in the back. And he turned to Denny [Bruce, ] and said, ‘I don’t think this guy is too hip.’ And he quit on the spot. And that was the last I saw of Seth.

“And Seth was right, I didn’t know my ass from a hole in the ground. But it was fun, and they still let me get away with it.”

t’d be difficult not to hear an echo of Fleet Foxes shaggy Northwestern Pacific folk-pop or Elliott Smith’s strummy melancholia in the delicate chamber-folk beauty of Blind Pilot’s second album, We Are the Tide. The Portland sextet’s September release is a dramatic step forward from 2008’s more austere, low-key 3 Rounds and a Sound, showcasing not only their growth as musicians and songwriters but the difference a full-fledged studio can make.

Originally conceived around the duo of singer/guitarist Israel Nebeker and drummer Ryan Dobrowski, the band grew to a six-piece by the time they started touring 3 Rounds and a Sound. That time on the road tightened not only their chops but the band’s chemistry. Responding to that, Nebeker and Dobrowski, who had previously co-written all the songs together, brought the rest of the band into the songwriting process.

Everybody is very aware and respectful about what kind of energy we’re creating as a group rather than trying to shine as an individual,” Nebeker says from his basement studio, where he’s working on material for their third album.

“It was a challenge having six people in the studio all giving their opinions,” he continues. “We did a lot of building the songs way up and then taking a step back and stripping them back down. There was some experimentation. It was a pretty fun way to do it.”

It’s a successful approach. While many songs boast orchestral warmth, We Are the Tide isn’t particularly lush, instead marshalling the effects into big crescendos and otherwise sticking to tasteful shading and color. The big sing-along harmonies see BLIND PILOT Page 25

and loping ’70s folk feel recalls Paul Simon, partly a reflection of Nebeker’s own airy tenor.

Nebeker first got to know Dobrowski in the early aughts when they shared a summer abroad program, working with kids at a day camp in Newquay, a surfing town in Southwestern tip of England. Busking is quite common, and after watching a cop on the beat linger, then toss a pound in the case of a cobblestone strummer, the chronically broke duo started doing their own sidewalk shows. They’d met each other at University of Oregon and even played in bands together, but this was when the bond cemented.

“Even though we’d played together before, that felt like the start of what we’re still doing now with Blind Pilot,” Nebeker says.

The pair went their separate ways, but reconnected a few years later, after finding themselves both sick of indie rock. In 2007 they wrote some songs and took them on a summer bicycle tour of small one-horse towns along the coast.

The ensuing release 3 Rounds and a Sound is generally spare and reserved acoustic-based folk, brightened by subtle instrumental touches. They called in favors and many of their friends came in to provide additional instrumental tracks like violin, cello, and vibraphone. They played around town and invited everyone from the sessions to join them, their membership swelling to 11. By the time they returned to the road it was down to six, and that’s become the band’s core. “[We Are the Tide] is the things we were trying on the first album just gone a little further down the same path,” says Nebeker, who points to the studio’s dramatic impact. “Skyler’s place was really just a garage setup. He has very nice equipment and it’s comfortable, but it’s still a home studio. This is the first time where there are records on the wall of things I’ve listened to hundreds of times. It was like ‘Whoa, we need to make it sound as good as that.’”

Consider it “Mission Accomplished.” Meanwhile, Nebeker’s happy to have cleared the decks creatively and is girding for another run.

“Every time I make an album it’s like I just need to get rid of them in a way — finally put them in a solidified state so I can move on to the next thing,” he says.

Yet he’s happy to take a break, if it means visiting Boulder. “Colorado’s been pretty great for us, and we love it. It’s beautiful and Boulder in particular is an amazing city.”

Do your math when buying food

he thought of doing more math on a daily basis is a terrifying prospect for some.

Even the word “math” is enough to make some people’s palms sweat and breathing quicken.

But doing a little more math, especially in the grocery store, could save those last few calories you’ve been trying to slice off your diet.

A recent study conducted at the University of Colorado Boulder shows that the serving sizes presented on nutrition labels can be misleading, especially for those who are counting calories.

Donald Lichtenstein, professor and chair of marketing in the Leeds School of Business, helped to conduct the study and is one of its authors.

“A serving size is a half bar on some candy bars, but on other wrappers, the serving size is a full bar,” Lichtenstein says. “This obviously makes the calorie count appear to be twice as large. That would be OK if you were only going to eat half the candy bar, but you’re always going to eat the whole candy bar.”

The study’s participants said that they would feel less guilty about consuming the candy bar that appeared to have fewer calories, and would then choose to consume the candy bar that they felt less guilty about. In reality, the calorie counts for both bars were almost exactly the same.

The practice of cutting down serving size to reduce calorie count is referred to as “health framing” by the authors of the study. If a company reports the entire serving size, its products are said to have “no health frame.”

Lichtenstein says that before conduct-

ing the study, he thought people who were more health-conscious would be more likely to pay attention to serving sizes and know exactly what they were consuming.

“The thing is, the people who are more concerned about calories are actually the ones who are more duped by it,” Lichtenstein says. “They’re more influenced by it because they pay attention to the nutritional labels, where people who don’t care about calories don’t look at the nutritional label anyway.”

Lichtenstein and the other two authors of the study, Gina Mohr, a marketing instructor at Colorado State University, and marketing Professor Chris Janiszewski of the University of Florida, found that health framing could be found in food from all sorts of categories.

“We were able to find really interesting differences in everything from packaged soups to chocolate bars,” says Mohr.

“Our findings were pretty robust across the board.”

Mohr was also shocked to learn that health-conscious people were most affected by health framing.

“I like to consider myself a healthy person, so it made me really look at my own food decisions,” Mohr says. “I’m a huge advocate of looking at labels and trying to choose foods that have the least number of ingredients. I tend to look at that rather than calorie information, and I encourage my husband to do the same.”

The idea to study nutrition labels originated with Mohr, who was a doctoral student at CU when the study began. Before surveying participants, Mohr and Lichtenstein reviewed all U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations on how serving sizes are determined, and found that manufacturers are given a fairly large amount of freedom in the matter.

“There are two things going on here,” says Lichtenstein. “The FDA gives companies some leeway in deciding serving sizes, and that is enough to influence consumers. But the other thing is that lots of companies go beyond what the FDA allows, so they’re actually not even consistent with the law.”

Though such violations of FDA regulations exist, they are seldom prosecuted, a fact that Lichtenstein attributes to lack of manpower. Until there is a change in FDA regulations, he says, the responsibility rests with the consumer to thoroughly analyze nutrition labels.

“Do the math,” Lichtenstein says.

“Go into the store, and when you’re looking at calories, look at how many servings that calorie represents and what the serving size is, and do the math. Don’t just compare calories per serving to calories per serving, because this serving size may be twice the size of that one.”

hen I first heard the name of Boulder’s new eatery Shine, I was hoping it would feature entertainment by a troubled pianist portrayed by actor Geoffrey Rush. Alas, Shine appears more to refer to notions of maximized selfactualization than David Helfgott, although music is on the menu. The latest venture from the Emich triplets, this gathering space, bar and restaurant is just a few doors down from their former establishment, Trilogy.

The current location, formerly home to Redfish and Los Oasis Grill, is an expansive venue, and it makes sense that it also hosts DJ dance parties, world music performances, and yoga events. It’s not terribly surprising that when pal Andrew and I went for a recent lunch, much of the clientele was dressed as if they had just wrapped up yoga class. It also follows the menu of soups, salads, and entrees that feature generally healthy preparations, ranging from locally sourced grass-fed burgers to lentils prepared with coconut milk and Indian spices. There’s also a kids’ menu, and several dishes feature pickled elements.

Since both Andrew and I had to return to work after lunch, we declined martinis and housemade beer. Instead, we choose two of the $6.50 non-alco-

holic potions. Andrew had the Owl Eyes, a beverage designed to enhance focus. With its fine ginger flavor tempered by apple, a drop of an herbal tincture overwhelmed the rhizome’s flavor with a strong cumin-like scent.

More balanced was the Liquid Hush, a vanilla-scented, steamed coconut milk cocktail served warm. This beverage created a pleasant effect reminiscent of drinking a not-too-sweet, frothy marshmallow with a whisper of Orangesicle.

cup of Buffalo chili that was less assertive than an oldfashioned Tex-Mex preparation, but was still quite satisfying. The pureed Colorado Winter squash soup possessed just the right amount of spicing to ward off winter’s chill, while retaining spring-like freshness with a crisp kale chip garnish.

Andrew’s $12 French dip lamb sandwich spotlighted locally sourced meat from Lafayette’s Leistikow Farms, a far sight better than Aliki Farms. The thinly sliced meat carried a milder flavor that would pass muster with those who don’t typically care for lamb. “Splendid” best describes the dark and rich au jus sauce. On the side, this sandwich was accompanied by better than average sweet potato fries, distinguished by heft and earthy flavor.

Two jackfruit tacos were pricey at $13.50, but they were unique for Boulder. While my previous encounters with this ingredient were in fruit shakes at Vietnamese pho restaurants, I was aware that jackfruit has become a Southern California vegan taco favorite. Though it doesn’t entirely capture the flavor of meat or poultry, it does nail the texture, and Shine’s spicing helped the taste, as did a mouth-puckering fermented salsa verde.

Blue corn tortillas contributed eye appeal, and sides of skillfully cooked black beans and quinoa rounded out the

peaking of films, I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of iconic ’80s throwback actors in the American adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. I was more than excited to see that Buttercup from The Princess Bride and former Mrs. Sean Penn, Robin Wright, The hasKitchen found a second career as an investigative journalist.

But I was even more gratified to see that British actor Steven Berkoff put in an appearance as the Vanger family’s slightly menacing attorney. Berkoff knows his sinister, as he played crooked art dealer Victor Maitland, the antagonist in the first Beverly Hills Cop.

Shine certainly offers up a menu of healthy and innovative choices, although I would have been more enthusiastic if the prices were lower.

However, the happy hour/late night menu does seem to address this concern with reasonably priced sliders and dishes of roasted chickpeas, to name a few choices. Shine reflects ambition on many levels, and certainly succeeds on uniqueness and quality.

Ghost Face Killah

Twisted Pine Brewing Company has announced the rerelease of chili beer Ghost Face Killah, which the company describes as “the spiciest beer in the world.”

Owner Bob Baile says the idea for the beer was born in response to constant requests from fans of the brewery’s standard chili beer, Billy’s Chilies, for something “hotter.”

“Customers kept asking for more heat, and we were determined to oblige them,” he says.

Ghost Face Killah is an American-style wheat ale, right up until it’s not. Once fermentation is complete, brewers introduce Anaheim, Fresno, jalapeño, serrano, habanero and ghost peppers (called “bhut jolokia”). Due to the extreme nature of the beer, Ghost Face Killah is sold individually in 12-ounce bottles.

Twisted Pine first bottled the beer last May, when it was only available in Colorado.

“We never really planned to mass-produce Ghost Face Killah,” General Manager Jody Valenta says, “but once we made it, everyone wanted some and the orders just came pouring in.”

This time, Ghost Face Killah is slated to appear this month across Colorado, as well as in Texas, New Mexico, Florida, Nebraska, Missouri and Louisiana. For more infor-

Odell turns red

Odell Brewing has released its seasonal Red Ale. The American-style red ale is described by the brewery as “slightly aggressive” and “surprisingly unpredictable.” The brew boasts a ruby hue and a fruity hop flavor with just a hint of pine, pairing well with spicy entrees or tangy goat cheese.

Red Ale will be available January through April within the Fort Collins brewery’s 10-state distributor region.

buying the stuff in a bag, and I’ve made it very easy for you, so there is no excuse why you can’t make your own. I use almonds and dried blueberries, but this is one of those recipes where once you have the basic recipe, you can use any nut you want.

Dried cranberries and dried apricots taste great too. I add cinnamon, but you surely can omit that if you have an aversion to the spicy stuff. You could also add some dark chocolate chunks. Oh, I like that idea. So many options, so little time.

I know I’m putting a lot of pressure on the Waffle Brothers to deliver the perfect treat on your next visit, but I’m sure they can back up my words.

Almond Blueberry Granola

Preheat oven to 325. Lightly grease a baking sheet (can use parchment paper). In large bowl, combine oats, almonds, brown sugar, salt and cinnamon.

In small bowl, combine oil and syrup. Pour over dry mixture, and toss. Make sure all dry ingredients are coated. Add in blueberries. Pour onto baking sheet.

Bake for 30-40 minutes, tossing a few times in between. Granola should be golden brown. Take out of oven and let cool. Break up any clumps. Enjoy!

Note: This is great in milk, with yogurt or on its own.

Carano lacks punch

I

n terms of its title, Haywire doesn’t quite go there; it’s more “Haywire-ish.” But it’s eccentric, and the on-screen violence is sharp and exciting — brutal without being either subhumanly sadistic or superhumanly ridiculous.

Director Steven Soderbergh had an idea to showcase the serious, muscly agility of Women’s Mixed Martial Arts star Gina Carano, without a lot of digital this or stunt-double that. Early in the picture, special operative Mallory Kane, played by Carano, is being set up for a double-cross and suspects as much. She meets her colleague, played

by Channing Tatum, in a roadside diner. Soderbergh noses in close to Carano’s face. There’s not much dialogue, just a few cryptic lines about their duplicitous boss, and missions undertaken in Barcelona and Dublin.

Then, just when we’re getting frus-

trated with the inside baseball, Carano bites her lower lip in such a way as to explain why, on YouTube, you can find a clip titled “Gina Carano Lip Bite — Hot!” And then Tatum socks her in the head, hard. Two minutes later, after some crisply but simply staged viciousness (kicks, punches — you can see why Soderbergh has said he wanted to work with Carano because “she can break people in half ”), Mallory runs out of the diner with a hostage, and Tatum’s character stays behind, in a heap.

If Lem Dobbs’ script were a little snappier, or a little less zigzaggy, Haywire would be a first-rate B-picture instead of an interesting one. But even with its limited narrative payoff, the

film’s appeal remains blunt and consistent.

Carano (whose voice was altered — lowered to a menacing purr — in post-production) takes care of business with Tatum, and then with Michael Fassbender (who plays another operative), and then Ewan McGregor, as Mallory’s ex and overseer. She beats the hell out of everybody. Carano may not be a born or a natural actress; she is, however, an undeniable and heartening rebuke to the skinny-Minnies Hollywood favors over real women with curves.

Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas offer neat little portraits in untrustworthy authority, even though

with a gun to my head I couldn’t relay to you who was doing what to whom, and to what end. How does the plot tie everyone together? Not very elegantly: Unfolding mostly as an extended illustrated flashback, while Mallory and her hostage (Michael Angarano) drive, drive, drive, Haywire shows what happens when dumb venal men (government security contractors and various killers) underestimate smart vicious women who do not like to be framed for murder.

Right story, wrong script

ed Tails squanders a great subject, reducing the real-life struggles and fierce heroics of the Tuskegee Airmen to rickety cliché. Some of the action is fun. But if something about that statement doesn’t sound right, well, there’s your chief problem with Red Tails. It sets out to ingratiate without provocation or complexity.

This much can be said of producer George Lucas’ long-gestating project: It avoids the aggravating Hollywood strategy of telling an African-American story by way of a mass-marketable white protagonist, a la the Civil War drama Glory.

But Lucas has overseen a movie divided against itself, Boulder Weekly

part Clone Wars-aesthetic kicks, part dutiful sociology. The script, confining the action to 1944 Italy, places the occasional grown-up sentiment in a character’s mouth, as when one member of the 332nd Fighter Group tells another: “Don’t be in a hurry to get to the killing part.” Yet the movie can’t wait to get to the killing part, rendered here in computer-generated aerial dogfights a little too in love with the available filmmaking technology, and a little too uninterested in the characters doing the shooting.

The focus is on a fictional group of men stationed at Ramitelli Airfield. Hard-drinking squadron leader “Easy” Julian (Nate Parker) is the by-the-book contrast to his best friend, the Jedi whiz of the bunch, Joe “Lightning” Little (David Oyelowo). Coffee, the chief mechanic, is played by Andre Royo, one of several supporting players who worked with director Anthony Hemingway on The Wire. (Lucas himself directed the reshoots.) The marquee names belong to Terrence Howard and Cuba Gooding Jr., offering complementary portraits in unflappable leadership as a proud colonel and a pipe-smoking major, respectively.

Producer Lucas, director Hemingway and his writers, John Ridley and Boondocks creator Aaron McGruder, aren’t going for serious business here. As McGruder said in the film’s promotional materials, Red Tails offers “a comic-book feel that only George Lucas could bring to a

film.” He added: “Before this, we didn’t have our John Wayne, but we now have that kind of larger-than-life treatment, and the Tuskegee Airmen deserve it.”

Yes, and they also deserve some dramatic vitality and plausibility. If you go to Red Tails to learn anything (even heavily fictionalized things) about the origin of the Tuskegee Airmen, or the workaday racism they had to endure, you will be disappointed. When Howard’s defiant colonel upbraids the Pentagon brass about their disdain for his men, the sequence is straight out of a comic book, per co-writer McGruder’s description. But if we can’t believe a scene such as this one would ever have happened that way, not in a million Earth years, then there’s no real gratification in it.

Little romances a local beauty, while Julian loses faith in his leadership skills. Sick of being sidelined and marginalized in the war, the men of the 332nd finally get the equipment and the approval they need to prove themselves in the air, primarily as protection for bombers delivering their payloads. But Red Tails runs into serious storytelling snags, particularly in its episodic second half.

The actors do all they can. But Lucas and company did not get the script right with this one, which is the single, dubious link Red Tails has to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
