Crooked cops

The story entitled “The Chair and the Camera” (cover story, Jan. 17) brought to me a sense of deja vu after reading Boulder County Jail spokesperson Jeff Goetz’s defense of injuring and brutalizing citizens in his care. I encountered the same defensive pablum in an exchange of emails with Denver Police Department “spokespersons” after sending letters and emails of complaint to the Denver mayor and

the chief of police (neither of whom bothered to respond) regarding the mistreatment of John Copeland.

If you recall, Mr. Copeland was the 85-year-old disabled man who was pulled out of his bed by DPD in the middle of the night for having allegedly defended himself against a plainclothed DPD “volunteer” who refused to identify himself as he tried to take the poor gentleman’s handicapped placard. Mr. Copeland mistook the

erhaps you thought that, surely, the far right wing in American politics couldn’t get any nuttier.

If so, you clearly hadn’t factored in Glenn Beck.

Since losing his glory spot as a Fox TV yackety-yacker, Beck has been less visible, but no less busy, continuing to promote himself as leader of the political wacky, and still delighting them as the P.T. Barnum of conspiracy theories. His hottest-selling shtick in recent months is a piece of fear-mongering about an enti-

I wonder if all Colorado law enforcement public affairs staff are trained by the same PR firm, as the language they use to defend their abuse of the public is suspiciously similar. On the other hand, Goetz is rather candid as he brags that pain compliance holds “hurt like see LETTERS Page 8

Silly, too. But it’s the hot new thing on the far right. “Heroic” lawmakers in Alabama and Tennessee have already banned any implementation of Agenda 21-style provisions in their states — even though none were proposed. Five other state legislatures are considering the same this year. Also, the new tea party senator from Texas, Ted Cruz, says the U.N. takeover of America will be a top issue for him. And, of course, the big rumor on the right is that Barack Obama is using CIA mindcontrol techniques to implement the U.N. dictatorship.

Do these people ever even visit reality?

hell.” Military personnel who torture innocent people have been similarly boastful. This is not surprising that, since our police and sheriff ’s departments have basically become domestic branches of our military, the same torture techniques used at Gitmo and Bagram are being used on “uncooperative” civilians in our own country. Oh, and by the way, video cameras in jails won’t protect us, as across America convenient lies are being told about the footage being mysteriously “unavailable” to courts of law.

We become outraged when police kill and maim animals, but too few raise concern when they do this to humans. We comfort ourselves by telling ourselves that “those people” are “criminals” and “low-lifes” after all (even when they are not formally charged). However, we need to realize that unless police abuse is stopped, the Surveillance State is dismantled and our law enforcement is demilitarized, any of us who have the misfortune of being stopped by the police may have a place reserved for us in “the chair.”

While I enjoyed your article about Avery in this week’s Boulder Weekly, I suggest you learn more about characteristics of beer styles. Your comment that “while NWP offers some smokiness, it’s not a traditional porter” implies a porter should have smokiness. It should not. Please acquaint yourself with industry standards for beer styles if you want your readers to embrace your reviews. Boulder is not only very beer-friendly, it’s very beer-

For more information on beer styles I recommend reviewing information from the Brewer’s Association (BA), Cicerone Program or Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). For example, you will note that the BJCP recognizes three styles of porter, none of which traditionally have smokey qualities. BA recognizes smoke porter as a sub-category unto itself, but this should not be construed to imply that to be a porter (i.e. “portery” as you say) the beer should be smokey. And note that roasted qualities should not be confused with smoke (contrast a dark roast coffee to smoked meats, for example.)

While I am not surprised to hear that your sensory perception of Avery’s NWP might not fit traditional style guidelines, I suspect that a more intense, American-style, hop flavor and bitterness explain how it goes beyond traditional categories (as many Avery beers do).

Cops in the schools, gun control and race

A

week after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., the National Rifle Association called for immediately assigning armed police officers to every school in the country.

It also called on Congress to appropriate the money to pay for doing so.

Except for the cost — $10 billion or more a year probably — the proposal is a no-brainer. If trying to keep a mental case with a gun from shooting up your school is what you’re trying to accomplish, having one or more cops in the school at all times is the self-evident thing to do.

What are you supposed to do if you think a crime is under way or about to occur? Call the police, of course. What is the only better way to deter or abort a violent crime than calling the police?

Having an armed police presence at the scene before the crime goes down, of course. This is particularly true in the case of multiple victim shootings, like the ones at Sandy Hook Elementary School, Columbine High School and Virginia Tech, which typically take the form of a sneak attack on unarmed victims. Law enforcement can’t arrive quickly enough to abort such crimes once they’ve begun, and the absence of law enforcement on the scene in advance means its deterrent effect is also absent.

Now a defining (albeit largely unspoken) principle of the gun control movement is that law enforcement should have a monopoly on protecting individual Americans from crime. This is the premise behind Rep. Claire Levy’s bill to ban concealed carry on campus, for example.

So you would think gun control advocates would be the first to agree that putting cops in the schools to prevent massacres is an obvious course of action. But you would be wrong, that’s for sure. The initial reaction of gun control freaks and progressives generally to the NRA’s proposal for police in the schools ran the gamut from disdain to ridicule.

However, a couple of weeks after the NRA made its proposal, pollsters found that a majority of Americans agreed with the NRA. A Pew Research poll found that by a two-to-one margin Boulder Weekly

(64 percent to 32 percent) Americans favored “putting armed security guards or police in more schools.” A Rasmussen poll found that 54 percent of Americans “would feel safer” if their child’s school had an armed security guard. For parents with school-aged children the figure was 62 percent.

So some gun control advocates and progressives are trying a different line of attack. They’re playing the race card.

They’re claiming that putting more cops in the school will discriminate against black and Hispanic students.

How? Here’s how Jamelle Bouie, writing on The American Prospect website, puts it: “Schools with more police might be safer from violence, but there are also unintended consequences to exposing students to law enforcement.

‘With the increase of police in schools, we’ve seen a dramatic increase in school-based student arrests, particularly of youth of color,’ writes Judith Browne Dianis, co-director of the Advancement Project, a civil-rights group. ‘Instead of addressing infrequent, serious threats to safety, police officers in schools often respond to minor student misbehavior by handcuffing, arresting and criminalizing the very young people they are intended to protect…’”

Or, as Aaron Kupchik claimed in a Washington Post opinion piece, the presence of police officers in schools “has effects that help transform the school from an environment of academia to a site of criminal law enforcement …

Minorities are especially vulnerable to the overpolicing that can take place in schools, which increases both the racialacademic divide and racially skewed arrest rates …”

In other words, if cops are put in schools to prevent massacres, which are rare, they will spend most of their time enforcing the law and keeping the peace, and the burden of law enforcement and peace-keeping will fall disproportionately on black and Hispanic students.

I suspect there is some truth in this analysis, but it still takes a lot of chutzpah for gun control advocates to argue that cops shouldn’t be put in the schools because if they are it will

We remember the first time Boulder Weekly wrote about the fact that virtually none of our police officers and firefighters could afford to own a home in Boulder, the place where they risked their lives every day. It wasn’t because they didn’t want to live here. It was the simple fact that the city of Boulder’s long-standing growth and openspace policies had caused them to be priced out of the housing market on a working person’s salary. We wrote that 16 years ago, and at that time, we also reported that a couple of cops were hoping to move into what was then a new Habitat for Humanity housing project in North Boulder. Workers not living within Boulder city limits isn’t a new issue, nor is it limited to cops, firemen or other city employees.

What is new is the apparent total disconnect from reality that is currently being shown by city councilwoman K.C. Becker, as demonstrated by her recent public urging, following the elk incident, for more cops to live within the borders of Boulder city limits so they can be more in touch with the organic sensibilities of the enlightened folk who live below the Flatirons. In other words, Becker apparently believes that in the outback of Boulder County in places with names like Longmont, Louisville, Lafayette and Lyons — and, God forbid, in the barbarian settlements of Weld County, where our cops and firefighters can actually afford to live — it is surely normal to blow the living crap out of an elk in the middle of a neighborhood in the middle of the night.

Note to Councilwoman Becker: Not only should you get out of Boulder once in a while, but if you’re going to try and govern a city the size of Boulder, you should know that our cops don’t live here because it’s too damn expensive to own a home on what they get paid, not because they are addicted to night hunting for big game because they live in some backwards place beyond the open-space moat. So how could someone sitting on city council be so out of touch with the real world?

Maybe it is the fact that Becker lives in a $1.4 million Boulder home while listing her job as stay-at-home mom and city council representative. She lists her source of income as interest on her savings and the checks that come from her family’s Floridabased business, Peace River Citrus Products.

So if Becker wants our cops to share her Boulder values, then maybe she needs to introduce an ordinance requiring all of our cops to have trust funds and live in million-dollar homes.

But to her credit, Becker may be onto something. Our research showed that not one cop with a trust fund and living in a mansion has ever shot and killed an elk in the middle of a neighborhood anywhere in the United States. It’s hard to argue with the councilwoman’s logic. But it’s also hard to find and hire millionaire cops.

Sugar daddy seeks PR professional

We have received what might well be the worst press release ever written.

Granted, it was from something called SeekingArrangement.com, which touts itself as “the world’s largest Sugar Daddy website.”

Apparently this organization serves the civic duty of connecting wealthy older men to beautiful young ladies who are just in it for the money.

This would all be fine and dandy if the promotional material for its annual list of “Top 20 Fastest Growing Sugar Baby Schools” actually had anything to do with Colorado.

Oh, sure, they made an effort, inserting “Denver” into a canned quote, and throwing in a factoid about the number of Colorado State University females who signed up for the service increasing by 140 percent in the first two weeks of the year. (Yes, they said since 2012.) Never mind that CSU is not based in Denver. Or that no Colorado school made the top 20. Or that the release was sent to Boulder, where last we checked, the University of Colorado is of most interest to our readers.

And to add insult to injury, somebody forgot to take “Oklahoma University” out of the lead paragraph after the release was sent to that proud Sugar Baby institution east of us. Not that OU made the top 20 list either.

And as for the scores of young co-eds financing their college careers with the help of a Sugar Daddy, someone initially identified only as “Wade” says, “While some may argue that these women are just using men for their own personal gain, I believe that they are proactive in pursuing a higher education.”

‘Shameful’ comparison

Your snarky, presumptive ICUMI blurb (“Priorities, people,” Jan. 17), mashing together two entirely unrelated issues of a homeless person’s death and the elk shooting, was completely shameful on so many levels.

Why you would try to trivialize the grief of hundreds of Boulder residents who felt a connection with that poor creature is questionable enough, but to then assert that most of us probably have little regard for the tragic death of a 36-year-old homeless man is despicable.

I’m probably one of those you referred to as writing “sad poetic’” letters to the editor about the elk (printed in papers throughout the metro area — except yours), but allow me to point out here that these are two totally separate issues, and many of us have concern not only for the depraved behavior of our local police in the elk case, but also for the homeless population, whom, let us not forget, have had barriers thrown up preventing them from seeking shelter in the cold by both city officials and the police department, and you may recall that many of us have appeared at numerous meetings and demonstrations challenging these soulless anti-vagrancy regulations. … And may I add that I, for one, am a long-term volunteer at the Denver Rescue Mission — I wonder what humanitarian activity the ICUMI writer engages in while sitting in contemptuous judgment of those who were so moved by the elk shooting and dismissing our concern for the rest of humanity.

also have proportionately more gun crime, like armed robberies, than the white neighborhoods. Many, if not most, of the guns used in these crimes are acquired illegally, both because Washington and Chicago already have extremely restrictive gun laws, and because a disproportionate number of young, black and Hispanic men have criminal records and therefore

can’t purchase guns legally. Moreover, otherwise law-abiding citizens in these cities buy guns illegally, not in order to commit crimes, but for selfdefense.

Any imposition of new gun laws, or any increase in the enforcement of existing gun laws, will hit black and Hispanic men disproportionately hard.

The people who are going to be

screwed by a crackdown on guns are not the white males progressives love to hate; it’s young black and Hispanic men.

Gun control advocates, starting with President Obama, should have the honesty to acknowledge that.

nesimus only gives out his one-word missionary name these days.

He’s not your typical homeless man. His beard and clothes are clean, and he carries a cell phone that was recently given to him. The signs of early trauma evident in many transients are not immediately visible as he greets people with a slow bow, hands pressed together at his chest in prayer position.

Onesimus, pronounced “Oh-nessuh-mous,” carries a stick engraved with the date June 29, 1980, the date that he devoted his life to God. “That’s a prayer staff, my friend, not a cane,” he says with a smile and clear eyes, responding to questions with a polite “Yes, sir.”

Onesimus speaks softly, slowly, thoughtfully, occasionally tilting his head back to accommodate deep laughter. On one occasion in a park east of the Boulder Public Library, he sits on a bench near the shuffleboard courts and raises a tobacco pipe to his mouth, emitting small whisps of smoke above his red and grey beard.

His peaceful, gentle mannerisms belie a tumultuous past.

“I’ve been homeless all of my life,” Onesimus says. “I ran away from home when I was 2 years old.”

He explains that his parents used to tie him to his crib to keep him from escaping his house, as he was wont to do. But he became good at untying the knots.

“They would find me down the road in the middle of the night,” Onesimus says. “In desperation, they handcuffed me.”

He says the Lord has shown him an image of himself as an infant, a giant dark figure looming over his crib, saying “You’re mine now.” He’s convinced it was an evil spirit.

Onesimus says his father was a functional alcoholic and his mother was selfish.

“I felt like she hated me,” he explains. “She always pushed me away, threw me away. She used to say, ‘Let the devil take him.’ And the devil did.”

Onesimus says he would run away because of the emotional distress at home. His father loved him but didn’t know what to do with him. He found solace down the street at the home of a Boulder Weekly

Homeless man shares strife that led to current path

Life dealt Onesimus other blows before he decided to assume his current nomadic, disciple’s lifestyle. He attributes the lack of hearing ability in his left ear to dirty water from Lake Erie absorbed during his childhood.

Complicating matters was the tumor above his left ear that was pushing against his brain, a growth that was removed when he was an adult, leaving him on his back for six months.

“I couldn’t put a sentence together,” Onesimus says of the recovery period.

He still suffers from a migraine condi-

tion.

The Ohio native attended bible college in Kansas City, graduating in 1982.

“I was a truth seeker as a teenager,” he says of his time exploring meditation, ESP and various philosophies.

“For me, Jesus Christ was the only one who answered all the questions.”

After college, he worked manual labor jobs, from helping build a Christian youth camp in Kansas City to factory work in his hometown of Elyria.

Then he spent seven years at a Christian radio station, delivering sermons, playing music, even writing and producing commercials.

Then he got married.

“I had to go back into the real workforce,” he says. “I had a wife to take care of.”

That meant working as a security guard for a couple of years, then a truck driver for another six. Onesimus describes those occupations as frustrating for someone who felt that his true calling was being a pastor.

And then the marriage failed.

“We had a rough time,” he says.

“We lost four babies to miscarriage.

And I lost her. She lost her mind because of the grief.”

According to Onesimus, his wife suffered from bulimia and weighed 450 pounds when they got married. He describes her as someone who was initially humble but became “large and in charge.” She had traditional values, wanted to be a mother badly, and blamed herself for each miscarriage, thinking she had killed her own babies, he recalls. His wife divorced him after 11 years, and he suffered a complete nervous breakdown.

He says he never abused alcohol or other substances. When he did start drinking in moderation around 1990, he says he used alcohol “not to lose control but to maintain control. I didn’t want to lose my temper or be aggressive.”

Onesimus says the Lord told him to get a new start in Amarillo, Texas, where he lived in a motel for six weeks in 2004. As he was picking up the phone to call a company about getting another job “driving truck,” he says he was struck by a realization: “I can’t do this anymore. It’s not who I am.”

So he prayed for a new direction, and decided to “leave the common world.” He left his car, full of all his worldly possessions, as a donation to an Amarillo church. Onesimus says he packed one bag, “even though Jesus said take nothing with you,” and started walking.

“I came to an intersection, sat down, prayed and said, ‘All right, Lord, which way are we going?’”

After walking 20 miles the first day, a couple let him sleep in an old car outside their home — and sent him on his way the next day with breakfast and a jacket.

time and time again,” Onesimus says of his travels over the past eight years.

Since blisters were slowing him down, he recalls praying for a ride from a Christian, and his request was granted when up pulled an old Jeep driven by a man headed for Moab, Utah. Onesimus’ wandering has also taken him to Tabernash, Kremmling, Laramie, Wyo., and Fort Collins. Onesimus attributes most of his moves to directions from God — and Christians who took him in or gave him a ride.

In Fort Collins, he spent six months in an abandoned house next to a junkyard before a Loveland family that he met at church took him in for a month and shared Thanksgiving dinner with him. After he moved on, while walking through knee-deep snow in Longmont, an old Hispanic man in a truck stopped to pick him up, saying the Lord had told him to take Onesimus to the Boulder homeless shelter, where he dropped him off and gave him $20.

He says he stayed at the Boulder shelter the maximum 90 days, then met a family at a Quaker Friends meeting who let him live with them for several years. He did chores, like washing dishes, to earn his keep, but moved on in April 2012. He spent last summer on the street, or as he describes it, “staying outside.”

Last summer, he completed the three-month First Steps phase of the Boulder homeless shelter’s wait-listed program that helps homeless people get back on their feet, and has now entered

the organization’s Transitions stage. He has a guaranteed place to sleep and a support system to help him reintegrate.

Onesimus cringes at the idea of applying to get a disability check. After all, he has been a “working man” all his life, and never thought about being disabled, even though he qualifies.

“It never sat well,” he says of the disabled tag. “It still doesn’t. But I’m beginning to recognize my limitations.”

Onesimus insists that he has overcome the demons of his earlier years.

“I don’t think there’s too much lurking in there,” he says. “I spent 30, 40 years working on those issues.”

Onesimus adds that he could have spent thousands of dollars on a psychologist’s couch, but “my couch was Jesus,” and from those sessions he learned that “you’re not truly free from your past until you can be truly thankful for it.”

He says he hopes the Boulder Weekly series of profiles on homeless people shows who they really are: just human, like anyone else, “flawed, imperfect, doing what we can with what we’ve had to work with.”

Onesimus pauses, puts down his pipe, then recites a scripture about how Jesus wanted to be treated.

“Whatever you’ve done to the least of them, you do to me,” he says. “How would you treat Jesus if he was strung out on heroin or in prison?

“In my early days, I might have walked past him.”

he local battle over fracking has been heating up this week on several fronts, from a new study on oil and gas impacts on ozone levels to volleys fired in the city of Longmont’s legal defense of its ban on hydraulic fracturing.

And the county commissioners were scheduled to meet Jan. 24 to consider extending the moratorium on applications for oil and gas development, to allow county staff more time to plan and implement the county’s new oil and gas regulations. The commissioners were also expected to review an oil and gas road impact study and consider additional transportation fees for oil and gas operations to mitigate those impacts.

The aforementioned ozone study, conducted by a joint institute of the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, found that emissions from oil and gas operations north of Denver seem to be contributing to local levels of ozone pollution.

A team led by research chemist Jessica Gilman of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences found high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like propane in the area, and determined that the specific composition of the compounds was attributable to oil and gas — as opposed to other possible sources.

“When our first measurements came out, people would ask, ‘How do you know the high level of pollutants is from natural gas? How do you know it’s not from car exhaust, or cattle farms, or people’s propane grills?’” Gilman said in a news release. “But we discovered that emissions from oil and natural gas activities have a unique ‘chemical signature’ that’s very different from emissions from other sources, and it definitively identifies oil and gas wells as the major source of the high levels of VOCs like ethane and propane.”

The scientists also found that the VOCs were migrating significant distances — they were detected in Boulder and Fort Collins as well.

“Sometimes people forget that we all live downwind of somebody,” Gilman said.

city of Longmont filed motions Jan. 14 in response to a lawsuit from the Colorado Oil and Gas Association (COGA), the industry group that is challenging the ban on fracking approved by voters in November.

One motion challenges COGA’s effort to have the lawsuit heard in Weld County instead of Boulder County. (A small portion of the city of Longmont lies in Weld, which has been much friendlier to oil and gas interests than Boulder County. COGA filed the suit in Weld County District Court.)

The motion notes that Longmont’s city charter describes it as a city in Boulder County and that the city council’s resolution formally adopting the voter-approved ban was passed in Boulder County. The city’s motion also asserts that COGA itself has acknowledged that Boulder County is the proper venue for the matter: When it intervened in the state’s separate lawsuit challenging Longmont’s recently approved oil and gas regulations, the association wrote that “venue in this district is proper,” citing the same provisions in the Colorado Rules of Civil Procedure that it is now using to argue for the case to be heard in Weld.

The city’s second motion challenges COGA’s claim that the ban represents “unconstitutional takings” by depriving mineral leaseholders access to their resources, namely the oil and gas they have a right to. Among their arguments, attorneys for the city maintain that COGA has failed to show that it has been damaged by the ban or to seek compensation for that damage. They also allege that COGA can’t ask for a court judgment to overturn the law, that the association hasn’t shown a taking of “any particular property owned by any particular person” and that the group doesn’t have the standing to file a takings claim on behalf of its members.

Energy-efficient houses raise questions about increase in asthma

hough inactivity, smoking, and a lack of time spent in the great outdoors have all contributed to the staggering rise in asthma in past decades, some of the factors that contribute to asthma, which now affects an estimated 24.6 million Americans, may be aggravated by the way indoor air quality changes in green homes.

“Since the 1970s, asthma rates have tripled,” says Dr. Nathan Rabinovich, an asthma specialist at National Jewish Health. “It’s possible that we ended up increasing air pollution exposure because if you increase humidity then you increase house dust, mites, and mold. If you just do that, you may be getting into trouble. We have drastically changed how we’ve built homes. Energy-efficient homes causing sickness is a possibility I put forth.”

Energy-efficient homes became popular in an effort to save money, reduce emissions and conserve resources.

“Studies show that if you weatherize a home, your temperature and humidity go up, but also so do your allergens, like mold and dust,” Rabinovich says. “In green housing, if you do the insulation and make sure you have decent ventilation and fans where they are

ric Larsen is at it again. The Boulder-based explorer and environmentalist has just returned to Colorado from Antarctica after an attempt to cycle to the South Pole, a project dubbed the Cycle South expedition.

While Larsen failed to make it to the pole, there’s no doubt that he managed to set a record for distance traveled by bicycle in the harsh environment of Antarctica.

Pushing his bike through snowdrifts made for slower than expected travel on Eric Larsen’s expedition to bicycle to the South Pole.

But in addition to his exploits, Larsen is also an activist. In the face of global warming, he’s banging the drum loudly for the preservation of the coldest places on the planet. Places that, because of their very nature and unique ecosystems, are at grave risk from a warming climate. He’s committed to other causes, too, putting his apparently boundless energy into improving the planet, as well as the lives of people who live on it.

The Save the Poles project was born of his environmental commitment.

Larsen came face to face with dramatic changes on a second trip to the North Pole in 2006.

“There was much more open water, and it brought home how dramatic the changes were,” Larsen recalls of that

journey. “These are some of the last true wildernesses left on the planet. I didn’t want to have the feeling that it’s too late. I wanted to tell their stories and wanted people to act, but not some huge action, just do one or two little things.”

And it’s the little things that matter, says Larsen. Things like riding your bike rather than taking your car when you head down to Pearl Street can become a personal impact on climate change.

“If you decide that you’re going to ride your bike one day a week, that can make a big difference,” Larsen says.

And you can bet good money on Larsen jumping on his bike when he wants to go to Pearl Street.

“I actually do a lot of biking in general,” says Larsen, who made cycling the centerpiece of his Cycle South

expedition. “I worked in bike shops in high school and college and the majority of my training is on bikes for expeditions. The long hours lend themselves to what you experience when you’re on a trip. Expedition travel is a steady pace. It is a battle of attrition.”

For his Cycle South project, Larsen chose a Surley Moonlander.

“The bike is pretty standard,” he says. Along with its massively fat tires, designed for riding on snow and ice, the Surly had another key attribute.

“The bike has an offset fork,” Larsen explains. “So you can run the rear wheel on the front.” This design meant that Larsen could use a front wheel with a single-speed hub, a crucial consideration if any of his drivetrain components failed.

t one point in his life, David Mayhew gave up on art. An art teacher in high school pushed an impressionist style when he wanted to go for a realistic one.

The conflict steered him toward design engineering and graphic drawing — the career track that led to him arriving in the United States in 2004.

That he started chasing tornadoes shortly thereafter had more to do with geography than anything else.

“I’ve always said, every country you go to, you’ve got to do something unique to each country that you can’t do anywhere else,” says Mayhew, who grew up in Ipswich, England. Down the road from where he was living in Chicago,

the College of DuPage offered meteorology classes and field studies that involved storm chasing. So he started going out with the storm chasers.

“I hooked up with them and got into storm chasing, and later on I decided to quit my engineering career and go into photography and combined my two hobbies,” he says.

Two years later, he was a fulltime photographer spending the summer months chasing tornadoes and super-cell storms across the Midwest. The result, in addition to plenty of hail dents in his car and a new rear window after one was blown out in a storm, is a body of work that shows a lifelong interest in looking at the skies. The photos — which hold to that original aes-

thetic of authenticity and are only adjusted in Adobe Photoshop for contrast and saturation — seem like such an appropriate fit for exhibiting at the National Center for Atmospheric Research that it’s a bit of a surprise that it’s taken him three years since his relocation to Colorado to get there.

“So many people work in big cities where they’re surrounded by big buildings and often don’t get to see the sky, and there are just so many colors, details and natural beauty around all of us every day, and people often forget to look up,” Mayhew says. “And the sky can produce so many emotional qualities, like the serene beauty of a nice sunset or obviously the drama and the energy of a tornado.

He travels from Mexico to Canada and Colorado to Indiana in pursuit of storms, but says the area around Colorado, Kansas and Nebraska is his favorite. The area tends to get laterseason storms that move more slowly — across land as flat as a pancake that’s got a low population density and a good network of roads.

“My favorite is the isolated super cell storm, which hopefully, if you get a slow-moving one, you can position yourself pretty well,” he says. “But the tough question is whether to go in close and hope for tornado shots or pull back and get the structure of the storm and get nice sunsets and formations and details. So it’s a tough call.”

He’s had a few close encounters along the way, he says. The car engine is left running and pointed in the direction of the exit route. He keeps in mind when to take that exit, no matter how strong the lure of potential photos might be.

“There was a chase last year, it was my best chase ever, and that was June 20, 2011 — I saw seven tornadoes that day,” he says. “I could have seen more, but if you look at the images, you’ll see that the storm turned into this massive wall of black, dark ominous stuff heading straight at me, so I didn’t want to get too close to that for fear of that same bye-bye Kansas.”

He uses quick set-up tripods “even with tornadoes heading at me,” he says, “because, A, it’s dark under the storm and B, my hands are probably shaking, so a tripod’s always pretty useful.”

Why go into hand-shaking territory at all? Well, he says, a landscape without a dramatic sky is just kind of boring for him.

“The point of art is to create an emotional response in the viewer, no matter what the art is and no matter what the response is to it, so the sky’s an obvious choice,” he says. “And you get different reactions to the same thing. For example, one person is amazed by the beauty of the tornado, whereas another has fear and obviously doesn’t want to put the tornado in their house, so you get complete contrasts in reactions.”

Rebecca Folsom’s old-school multimedia extravaganza

couple of years removed from her successful duo tour with Celeste Krenz, singer/songwriter Rebecca Folsom returns to a Boulder stage this weekend with a new CD, her first in four years and her ninth overall. Why not?

“Celeste and I had made a couple of songs, we were thinking that we were going to do another album,” she explained last week, “and then we both decided, eh, let’s not, maybe we’ll take some of these and use them individually, and one of those songs we recorded up at John Magnie’s Knucklehead Studio up in Fort Collins.

But most of these songs were born out of, ‘OK, yeah, I want to make this album, pretty sure it’s going to be called Reunion — I don’t know why, I hadn’t written anything yet — and then began the process of writing.

“I also have my B.F.A. in fine art, and I painted for a number of years, showed my work, had a couple of art shows … but after I graduated college, my music came to the forefront and that’s what I concentrated on. So … I really wanted to reclaim that.

“I just wanted to do all my art together, rather than having them compartmentalized in my world. [Instead of ] spending two years doing an album and touring, and then stopping and getting off the road and then writing poetry books and doing that, and then painting, it was like, ‘Wow, what would it be like to just do all of them at the same time?’”

Artistic ambition is not an unfamiliar trait for Folsom, who has been publishing poetry in between her touring schedule for some years now, and it’s pretty unlikely anyone will find that the music got shortchanged this time around. Folsom’s recorded output has long been a textbook study in deeply crafted songwriting and letter-perfect Boulder Weekly

singing influenced by the Nashville scene (where she worked and lived for several years up until her return to the Front Range a couple of years ago) and the classic songwriting stylists of the 1970s. The new CD features guest appearances by Tim O’Brien and Nick Forester of Hot Rize, John Magnie of the subdudes, Greg Garrison from Leftover Salmon and Richie Furay. And judging by the poised, achingly delivered gospel-shrouded title tune (ironically, the last song she actually finished for the already-titled CD), her local fan base will be glad to have her back.

For Folsom, though, seeing her original idea through to the end was part satisfaction and part relief — the most carefully assembled plans can frequently turn into something else entirely by the time the final mix goes down.

“Right, yeah, sometimes it morphs,” she agrees. “And so I was very pleased at how the album and everything came together. It was like, ‘Oh, I get it, I get what the snapshot is, I get what the mood is.’ I don’t know if I can put it into words, but I was getting sort of feeling like, ‘That’s what this is about.’

While I was in it, I was kind of in this swirl of dancing with the muse, with the painting and the poetry and different intuitions that would come. And the different things that inspired it.

“You know, I realized, as I was sending my press releases out, that it had been four years since I released an album. That’s a long time ... and there were a lot of things that happened in that time.

The Fourmile Fire that happened up here, we’re right in the middle of that. That was very impactful for my whole neighborhood.

“With the Rhythm Angels ending, the fire — there were a number of things during this period I went through where I felt like things were ending. But I’ve learned over the years that there’s a season for everything. Winters come in the art. So I kind of relaxed into it.”

Folsom’s art and poetry will hang at the eTown Hall on Spruce Street until mid-February. After her gig this weekend, she plans to line up a national release for the CD and head back on the road when the weather warms up.

Folsom is planning to keep the business stuff in-house for now, but one never knows. Four years is a minor eternity in the music business; a decade and half of recording and touring experience puts Folsom in a good place but, despite persistent claims of its imminent demise, the music business is still awash with artists chasing their own niche markets, and a little of the personal touch still counts for something.

“I think we’ll self-distribute,” she says. “But we’ll see, I really don’t know at this point.

“I remember somebody asking me about a new CD, ‘How do you make it stand out’? I remember walking into the Fox [Theatre] years ago when I had just released a new album, and there were just literally stacks of CDs on the guy’s desk. I was just so pleased that I had gone through the trouble of handing it to him in person.”

Pablo Kjolseth loves the aesthetic qualities of celluloid. But as the director of the International Film Series (IFS), he is keenly aware that the future of moving pictures is digital.

2013 will mark a key moment in the history of cinema; it is the last year major Hollywood studios will make prints on 35 mm film. From here on out, Kjolseth says, most everything will be ones and zeros.

The hidden sounds of Alabama Boulder director makes Sundance with documentary on Muscle Shoals sound

he section of the Tennessee River that forms the northern border of Muscle Shoals, Ala., didn’t always go by that name. Early Native Americans called it “The Singing River” and believed a river princess sang its soft melody.

With the river’s song coursing through its veins, Muscle Shoals became home to two highly influential music studios: FAME Studio and, later, Muscle Shoals Sound Studio.

Musicians like Willie Nelson, The Rolling Stones and Lynyrd Skynyrd visited the tiny Alabama town to record some of their most famous hits.

However, few know that this hotbed of American music even exists. Muscle Shoals documentary director and Boulder resident Greg “Freddy” Camalier discovered it by accident on a 2008 road trip with a friend.

“One night we were tired and we saw Muscle Shoals on the map,” Camalier says. “We knew some of our favorite music was from there, so we turned around and spent the next 24 hours there. We were blown away by the town and the story that hadn’t been told.”

Ever since 2009, first-time director Camalier and filmmaker Stephen Badger have worked tirelessly to tell the Muscle Shoals story. Camalier recently took another road trip, but this time he traveled to Utah to view his completed documentary at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.

Muscle Shoals features cinematography by Anthony Arendt (Avatar), along with celebrity interviews that include Mick Jagger, Aretha Franklin and Bono. Though corralling busy musicians was no easy task, Camalier says many felt compelled to talk about this rich piece of music history. “[The musicians] had respect for the story and the players,” Camalier says. “I loved interviewing them all; they all brought great stories and insights, which collectively made an awesome tapestry in the film.”

Studio. Elton John, Paul Simon and Bob Dylan were just a few of the performers who enlisted The Swampers to add that Muscle Shoals magic to their songs.

More recently, The Black Keys recorded their acclaimed 2010 album Brothers in the famous studio.

Camalier interviewed the three surviving Mick Jagger members of the The Swampers, Jimmy Johnson, Roger Hawkins and David Studio. screen You’ll need a Haneke ‘Amour’ will ruin you

h, hell no. Why you gotta do us like that, writer/director Michael Haneke? Is life not already emotionally dense enough that you have to go and drop Amour on us just to remind us how finite and precious this human experience is? This is the sort of film you don’t watch first thing in the morning (because your whole day is shot wallowing in the reality of mortality) or last thing at night (because good luck sleeping while wondering how age will one day feast on you).

There isn’t a pleasant moment in Amour. Even when it is sweet, that sweetness is cyanide-laced.

What Haneke has done is make the definitive modern end-of-life narrative. In a world where “more” has long been a synonym for “better,” we long ago stopped considering whether squeezing these future corpses we walk around in for a few more years of “life” is actually worth it. To see Amour is to think “maybe not.”

Georges ( Jean-Louis Trintignant) and Anne (Emmanuelle Riva) love the shit out of each other.

Now in their 80s, the couple is affluent, cultured and about to stare into the abyss. One day, over breakfast, Anne stops communicating normally. It is the first domino to fall, as her flesh rapidly decays, first para-

lyzing half of her body and then taking the rest of her mind. Her daughter, Eva (Isabelle Huppert), is sympathetic in her visits, but it is Georges who must deal with a new reality, which is one in which his wife evaporates in front of him while he cleans her diapers.

Amour sounds fun, doesn’t it? As unflinching as it is arguably important, Haneke’s movie comes at a pivotal time. Science is at a tipping point where it can provide the kind of long life that people mere decades ago couldn’t fathom, without questioning whether it should. Amour explores this with nuance, as is evident in a haunting sequence of exchanges between Georges and a wayward pigeon. In some ways, this is a slasher film, with the aging process as Jason Voorhees.

There is no questioning the art on display, but entertainment is definitely lacking. On a scale of emotions, the needle moves from “sad” to “really sad” to “ensure no sharp objects are around.” What’s remarkable is that the year’s two best female perfor-

he 2004 tsunami that struck Eastern Asia was the sixth deadliest “act of God” in recorded history and quieted just fewer than 300,000 lives.

The first major motion picture to tackle the subject, The Impossible, is about a group of white folks who get injured and significantly inconvenienced while brown people all around them die in horrible fashion.

This is equivalent to making a Holocaust movie about a family of Jehovah’s Witnesses who very nearly got taken to Auschwitz once but now run a nice online newsletter.

How deplorable are we as a people that the most palatable story we found attractive enough to tell stars the pasty Ewan McGregor and the quasi-translucent Naomi Watts? And as if it wasn’t enough to focus a story set in this maelstrom of human tragedy on tourists, the picture of the real family who inspired this film is shown over Boulder Weekly

Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern Wild) is 9 years old; Riva is 85. If there is justice in this world, the oldest or youngest performer in history will take home that trophy come Oscar night. Which lady you root for will depend on your preference: Do you enjoy resilient and vibrant optimism or sophisticated and nuanced reality?

Amour is quietly devastating, importantly hard-towatch and reluctantly crucial. The truth that it speaks is one that no one wants to hear, told in a way that few artists have been able to tell it. It is the most remarkable film achievement to ever make you want to take a shower while crying and wishing for immortality.

But knowing that this is the result, knowing that this family will, at some point, enjoy a miracle that 300,000 souls will never know trivializes the suffering to such a gobstopping degree it is hard to power through.

The Impossible, as a movie, is actually pretty good. It is supremely wellshot, passionately acted and brilliantly paced. The Impossible, as a signifier, is horrifying. It suggests that white suffering is the worst suffering, that we are incapable of empathy for those who do not look like us and almost mocks the loss felt by so many families.

There’s no doubt when the film was green-lit, a room full of suits envisioned the “Best Picture of the Year.”

How wonderful to see them disappointed.

‘The Impossible’ and the hierarchy of suffering

the credits: And they’re Hispanic. Good God, how do you even process this as a movie when so much gut-wrenchingly vile cultural chaff is in the way?

Let’s pretend it’s possible to set aside the putrid and quasi-xenophobic trappings of The Impossible and focus on what director Juan Antonio Bayona and writers Sergio G. Sánchez and María Belón presented. Maria (Watts) and Henry (McGregor) take their sons, Lucas (Tom Holland), Thomas (Samuel Joslin) and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast), on a trip to Thailand at, quite literally, the worst possible point in time. When the wall of water hits, the family is scattered into two groups:

Maria and Lucas assume that Henry, Thomas and Simon are dead, and vice versa.

What follows is a relatively gorgeous, well-paced, thrilling and emotional look at survival in the face of absolutely inconceivable circumstances.

Although Watts got the Oscar nod, Holland pretty easily gives the best performance in the movie, encapsulating quite perfectly a boy who became a man in the space of one natural disaster. Bayona’s film is spectacular to look at, engrossing to watch and horrifyingly simplistic and narcissistic to think about for any length of time.

There’s no denying this happened, and that the real event is a tally mark on the side of the ledger for believing a guiding hand is at work in this world.

In the heartland of homebrewing Boulder craft breweries foster beer-geek culture

F

or Boulder craft brewers, business is booming. But it’s not just beer drinkers to whom local brewers attribute much of their success; it’s also Boulder’s deep-rooted homebrewing community.

For the majority of local craft brewers it seems that reaching out to the homebrewing community isn’t necessarily about saying “thank you.” It’s about cultivating a special relationship that’s been around Boulder for a long time: the relationship between homebrewers and commercial craft brewers.

In that collaborative spirit, Twisted Pine is making use of its new expansion to host its new Brew-U course Jan. 26.

According to the Twisted Pine website, the three-hour course will target “the budding homebrewer and those desiring to learn about the brewing process.”

Bob Baile, owner of Twisted Pine, has “wanted to cultivate this beer-geek

culture that’s all around Boulder, and the Brew-U course is just the first part of it,” says Justin Tilotta, Twisted Pine logistics manager.

The Brew-U course sold out within two weeks of being announced, and although the class was open to anyone wanting to learn more about brewing craft beer, Tilotta expects the majority of the pupils to be homebrewers.

After all, many Boulder breweries were founded by passionate homebrewers. So local breweries tend to encourage and assist amateur beermakers.

“Well, if you look around Boulder, most of the craft brewers here were homebrewers first,” says Tilotta.

In fact, we’ve got the “guru of homebrewing right here in Boulder,” he adds.

Tilotta was talking about Charlie Papazian, who, along with Charlie Matzen, formed the American Homebrewers Association (AHA) in 1978. Founded in Boulder, the AHA

was the first national homebrew organization in the United States.

According to Tilotta, the homebrewing community makes Boulder a “stomping ground for breweries.” Baile, Twisted Pine’s owner, started in the business by homebrewing in his garage.

Upslope, Avery and Oskar Blues also began with homebrewers, and the tradition lives on with some of the area’s newest craft breweries. Bootstrap Brewing in Niwot was founded last year by husband and wife homebrewers Steve and Leslie Kaczeus, and Boulder’s new Wild Woods Brewery was started by homebrewers Jake and Erin Evans.

“Yeah, the craft brewers around here are extremely supportive of homebrewers. I know for a fact that Left Hand is, because that’s how they started out,” says Don Blake, homebrewer and founder of Longmont homebrew club

THE BLACK CAN BEER

North Boulder’s Upslope Brewing Company has released its blackcanned Foreign Style Stout, a limited release available in several local liquor stores.

The 6.9 percent ABV stout, previously distributed to celebrate Upslope’s one-year anniversary, is described as “exceptionally smooth” with a roast flavor.

The Foreign Style Stout will be available through March.

cuisine review Don’t give this grocery sushi short shrift

W

inter had finally arrived with a vengeance, and singledigit temperatures prompted me to investigate eateries offering warming soups that could serve as a satisfying one-dish meal. It was Sunday, and I remembered this is the day that Sachi Sushi, nestled in the Niwot Market grocery, dishes out authentic bowls of restorative Japanese ramen.

While some may be rightfully skeptical of a sushi spot nestled in a grocery, Sachi handily distinguishes itself from chain supermarket operations that truck in fare from afar. First of all, few other venues boast a chef with the pedigree of Tsukasa-san, born and raised in Osaka, and an alum of Boulder’s Sushi Tora.

As I walked into this spot at the tail end of lunch hour, I noted that the customer base mostly consisted of Asian families. Each table had ordered at least one bowl of noodle soup, and for my money, these observations boded well for the ramen.

There are three distinct varieties of noodle soup on tap. For $9 you can get a bowl with salt (shio) or soy sauce (shoyu) broth. A dollar more buys you a

spicy miso base. The regular menu features multiple donburi rice bowls topped with items like baked salmon, teriyaki chicken and Korean barbecue beef. Curries freighted with chicken or beef over rice are also among the nonsushi choices. Sushi consists of reasonably simple rolls and individual nigiri anchored by such standby fish as salmon, tuna and yellowtail.

I helped myself to a welcome cup of piping hot green tea, while the low-key sushi chef crafted a roll stuffed with spicy yellowtail, avocado and cucumber.

the edge of what would be authentic fare in Japan, it was an appealing choice for $6.25.

What I got was a more than fair helping of eight pieces of sushi, ringed by expertly prepared rice, lightly dusted with toasted sesame seeds.

The fish was better then one would expect at this price, featuring a fresh oceanic flavor. Crisp cucumber and buttery avocado provided a cooling counterpoint to the red pepper-based spicing. In retrospect, I might have been better off getting the non-spicy version, as the peppery seasoning detracted a bit

T

he samurai films of legendary director Akira Kurosawa have deeply influenced Western cinema. Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai inspired The Magnificent Seven, and many cite the masterless samurai of Yojimbo to be the filmic predecessor of Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name in Sergio Leone’s spaghetti westerns. Most are unaware though, that Yojimbo drew heavily on the writings of hardboiled noir writer Dashiell Hammett, who penned The Maltese Falcon. Kurosawa cited the film adaptation of Hammett’s The Glass Key as a major source of his film’s story. Film historians point to another of Hammett’s stories, Red Harvest, as another likely influence.

from the subtler tones of the clean-tasting seafood.

My main course of shoyu ramen was a far cry from the dime-a-pack stuff favored by starving students.

While ramen noodles of all sorts share similar size and texture, it was the adornments and broth that made this preparation stand out. The pleasantly textured noodles were adorned with a colorful mix of sweet corn kernels, ringlets of scallion and strips of pickled red ginger. Slices of roast pork, a morsel of white fish cake set off by a curlicue of red, and half a hard-boiled egg contributed additional heft. A meaty richness permeated the soup, with a hint of saltiness lightened by the flavorful vegetables. For a second, I imagined myself as a Kurosawa warrior hero, fed this hearty soup as a reward for protecting hapless villagers.

Perhaps that’s the most you can ask for from a family-friendly Japanese joint in Niwot. While Sachi Sushi eschews trendy presentation and ambience, it never fails to deliver unpretentious fare that leaves the diner more than content.

Blake became familiar with Left Hand around 1996, when a Left Hand rep brought the baby brewery’s beers to the Residence Inn in Boulder. Blake had just moved to the area and happened to be staying at the hotel.

By then, Blake had been homebrewing himself for about three years.

“We got to talking, and I invited him back to my room,” says Blake, “where I had about two or three cases of my homebrew from Chicago, and I think we ended up going through almost all of it that night.”

Soon enough Blake was making regular trips to Left Hand and got to know owners Dick Doore and Eric Wallace.

“I’ve always just been a big supporter of what they do, and now, you know, I consider Dick, Eric and the brewers to be good friends,” said Blake.

Blake said that he and the Left Hand owners tried to get a club for homebrewers started in the late ’90s, but “it kind of fell by the wayside.”

Shortly thereafter, Cinzia Wallace, Eric Wallace’s wife, convinced Blake to teach homebrewing classes at Left Hand.

“I capped the classes at eight people because I wanted everybody to get their hands on things. So, over the course of five weeks, we would brew two to five batches of beer, and at the end, everybody could take home a couple of sixpacks,” says Blake. “It was a cool idea, and it worked out pretty well.”

Eventually Blake was torn between doing more classes and “just getting everybody together on a more regular, kind of permanent basis.” He finally landed on forming the Indian Peaks Alers club, which would be a little less formal.

The Alers still meet once a month,

usually in the Left Hand Tasting Room. While it’s a social group, the Alers host educational activities like brew demos and style seminars.

The social aspect of the Alers group has attracted other breweries. Twisted Pine, for example, often hosts meetings for Hop Barley and the Alers, a Boulder homebrew club. Plus, Avery has its own Homebrew & Bottle Collector Support Group, and Oskar Blues has jumped on board with its Can Can Girls Beer Club.

These groups are “a way of giving back locally, you know, and getting local people involved in the whole craft beer movement,” says Brittany Dern, Oskar Blues’ online community manager.

Drawing the line between “giving back locally” and “giving it all away,” however, seems a little tricky for Boulder brewers.

Avery has no qualms about posting recipes of 12 of its most popular beers online. In fact, there is an entire recipe page on the Avery website.

“You know, yeah, you might think why should I, as a business, teach people to make something that I’m trying to sell,” says Blake. “But the more interested you get people, the more interested and excited they are about promoting you as a commercial brewer. So it fosters a really good sense of community.”

“If you asked Bob for the recipe of Hoppy Boy, he would give it to you under the condition that you bring him a couple bottles of what your homebrew of Hoppy Boy was whenever you’re done. He’ll even give you yeast or let you borrow hops,” says Tilotta of Twisted Pine.

“You know, it’s kind of like what goes around, always comes back.”

Back to basics at BJ’s

Brewhouse seems to aim for the mainstream

rom Avery to here?” Elizabeth asks. “Oh my God.” Ten minutes into our visit to BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, our tour of Boulder County breweries becomes a roller coaster. We’re going from an East Boulder warehouse to the 29th Street Mall; from a local favorite to a national chain; and from Peter Forsberg-level flair to Adam Foote-level dependability.

Where Avery and many others in Boulder take risks, BJ’s plays it safe.

The key word here is most definitely “clean.” A majority of the brewhouse’s beers carry their flavors through without lingering aftertastes, unusual risks or unexpected twists of any kind.

In cases like the P.M. Porter, the result is an ideally sweet, smooth dark beer with moderate malt tones. And the Harvest Hefeweizen is clean and unadorned by citrus, coriander, fruit or any of the other additives that can sneak into wheat beers.

Other brews practicing BJ’s apparent Clean Flavors Doctrine are the Piranha Pale Ale, where hops take a backseat to drinkability; the apple-like Belgian Grand Cru; the Bud-Lightbut-better Lightswitch Lager; and the Brewhouse Blonde. BJ’s Jeremiah Red was the favorite, light on the hops and amber-like in maltiness.

The beers aren’t vanilla, exactly. But when the menu asserts beer “doesn’t get much more intense than” the Tatonka Stout, we have to disagree. The supersmooth stout hardly moves the needle on our intensityometer.

In this town that’ll draw scoffs. But it’s a valuable addition to a beer scene where memorizing hops varieties appears to be a pastime.

One exception to the rule was the brown ale, Nutty Brewnette, with its distinctly Belgian floral flavors. Brown ale standards like Ellie’s or Upslope’s bear no resemblance to this beer.

But the brew that got us talking the most wasn’t a beer at all. It was Berry Burst Cider ­— and “burst” hardly even covers it. The sugary sweetness is Halloween night in a glass.

“It tastes like when you’re sneaking wine coolers from your mom’s fridge in high school,” Abby says. “It tastes like a couple Jolly Ranchers.”

“It’s fun and flirty,” she declares.

Whether you call it good for beginners or buy into Abby’s more cynical take — “It’s corporate and mainstream.

They don’t want to turn people off ” — BJ’s is a starting point in the long, strange journey into craft beer.

And the hefty menu is a reminder: BJ’s isn’t banking on its beer. This isn’t the place to taste the cutting edge of brewing. It’s more like a vision of what those ubiquitous chain restaurants could be, if they’d drop the neon-bright cocktails with names like Bahama Blast and make something worth drinking.
