Tucson shooting (Re: “War of words,” cover story, Jan. 13.) I think you guys used really poor judgment by putting this monster’s face on the cover this week. Christina Green, the 9-year-old victim, would have been a much better choice. Anything would have been better than giving this psycho any more attention — which is exactly what he wanted. I simply cannot believe you would choose to put this guy’s face all over our city for the next week.

Reasonable opinions, decisions and actions should never be taken based on rhetoric and metaphor, but this is the format of public address that is such common fodder today.

hances are that an art museum, symphony hall, university building or other public edifice in your area is emblazoned with the name of some prominent rich man. His name is up there in shiny brass, we’re told, because he’s a model citizen for all to emulate.

Of course, we know that his name is there only because he’s richer than Zeus and gave a bale of money to get the institution to immortalize him in brick and brass. And don’t even ask what he did to get so rich.

The real model citizens, in my view, are not those who are publicly glorified, but regular folks across our land who rise up against greed and injustice, usually fighting with no public acclaim.

Ironically, they’re often battling injustices perpetrated by the very same rich men whose names are so garishly splashed across our public buildings.

not be infringed.” Obviously, the need for a state militia has been replaced by the National Guard and Coast Guard, in which trained military personnel are entrusted with the defense of this country against domestic enemies. Their weapons are tightly controlled and safeguarded.

The only two reasons for a citizen to own a firearm are for hunting or defense of the household from intruders. In either case, ownership of a handgun, shotgun or rifle is more than adequate to satisfy these purposes. There is absolutely no need for any U.S. civilian to own any weapon more powerful or sophisticated than these. Accordingly, all handguns, shotguns and rifles must be licensed and registered to the degree necessary to match weapon to owner at the click of a computer key.

Furthermore, if we had prohibited the purchase of more sophisticated weapons (i.e., a Glock 19 semiautomatic pistol with an extended magazine), several innocent victims would not have died or been harmed during this tragedy, as well as those in shopping malls and on college campuses. The shooter is obviously disturbed by mental illness, and those defending the right to own sophisticated weapons exhibit the same qualities by showing a callous disregard for the safety and protection of their fellow citizens.

Mental illness and guns are as bad a combination as alcohol and driving.

Evidently we have the money to fight two wars overseas, but not the political will to treat the mentally ill who are not only a danger to themselves but to everyone else, as well.

Mission impossible State legislatures are faced with huge budget deficits that will have to be dealt with. Because of the massive federal cuts in state aid, states have had to cut state services. If voters have not already discovered this, there is also the reverberating negative effect that cuts in state aid have on municipalities or local governments. Given the GOP’s sole focus on spending cuts and total opposition to any tax increases, its “scorched earth” spending-cut policies will cause irreparable damage to vital state services that residents have come to expect and demand.

Already local governments are faced with the prospect of raising taxes merely to keep functioning. The end result will be continued increases in taxes, whether federal, state or local — or a combination of all three! The task before state legislators is going to be extremely difficult, if not impossible, if taxes are not raised. In my view, tax increases have become an imperative — it’s only a question of who will pay for those increases.

I would add that an increase in sales taxes is not the answer; it is one of the most regressive taxes, affecting primarily those in the lower to mid-range income brackets the most. It’s income taxes that must be raised (progressive taxation according to ability to pay).

I’d also suggest four things that would go a long way towards reducing our deficits: the federal government should increase the marginal tax rate for those with multi-million-dollar incomes, increase the tax rate on unearned income from 15 percent to 25 percent, retain the estate tax on those with multi-milliondollar inheritances and scrutinize wasteful spending in the Defense Department budget.

Over the past decade, the wealthiest of Americans have already had substantial tax cuts. It’s time they pay their fair share.

This also leads to deforestation, which in turn fuels global warming and reduces the oxygen that we breathe.

On my last trip to the market I found: quality, bagged salads for $2.50, a 10-pound bag of potatoes for $2.89, organic bananas for 69 cents a pound, whole chickens for 89 cents a pound, a dozen eggs for 99 cents,

om defies doctor, has baby her way,” the CNN headline read.

The news story described the ordeals that Aneka (who didn’t want her last name used) endured with the cesareansection births of her first two children — and her decision to have her third baby naturally at home attended by a midwife.

Rather than showing up on the date of her scheduled C-section, she stayed home and waited for her labor to begin naturally, certain her body could handle the task of delivering a child despite the slight increase in risks that comes with giving birth vaginally after having repeated C-sections. Although her doctor told her that her pelvis wasn’t wide enough to accommodate a vaginal birth — the pretext used by the physician to justify her two C-sections — Aneka gave birth in due time to a 9-pound, 6-ounce son after 20 hours of unmedicated labor.

Some hailed Aneka as a hero, a woman who bucked the controlling medical establishment to do what was best for herself and her baby. They understand that most women can safely give birth in the quiet safety of their own homes, and they support a woman’s right to place her trust in her body.

Others decried her as an irresponsible woman who should have done whatever her doctor told her to do to ensure

her baby’s safety. Apparently, some folks believe a pregnant mother ought to yield herself to the will of her doctor as if she were a problematic vessel and birth were an emergency that uniformly demands machinery and expertise in order to produce a safe outcome.

The debate over home birth is not new. It continues to rage in states across the country as increasing numbers of pregnant women reject the invasive hospital regimen — a regimen that carries its own risks — in search of a peaceful, natural birth that respects both the process of birth and the dignity of the mother.

In hospitals, women are typically subjected to a range of “prophylactic,” or preventative, measures such as IVs, constant fetal heart monitoring, repeated invasive vaginal exams, unnecessary episiotomies, pitocin to speed labor, the breaking of membranes and so on.

Women who give birth in hospitals are much more likely to endure unnecessary C-sections than women who give birth at home. Many hospitals prohibit women who’ve had C-sections from even attempting to give birth vaginally, meaning that one C-section can result in a woman having to endure C-sections every time she has a baby. cesarean.”)

C-sections are major surgery, of course, and come with their own significant risks. With our nation’s current C-section rate hovering around 30 percent, that’s a lot of women who are undergoing major surgery unnecessarily.

Aneka was told her pelvis was too small, a common reason doctors give for suggesting C-sections, but that turned out to be patently false.

She pushed a 9-pound baby through that pelvis of hers in 20 minutes.

At home, by contrast, there are no IVs, and a hand-held Doppler works just as well to monitor the fetus’s heart rate, freeing the mother to move around and keeping that often painful monitor belt off her belly. There are no strangers rushing in and out of the room, no episiotomies, and internal exams are limited.

Though pain medication isn’t available, the focus of a home birth is the mother’s comfort and dignity, not onesize-fits-all hospital policies based on fears about litigation. If complications arise that actually do require medical intervention, women can be transported quickly to a nearby hospital.

But having a home birth, though statistically quite safe, isn’t always easy.

Doctors and most certified nurse midwives (CNMs) won’t attend home births, and direct-entry midwives face obstacles in many states. In some states, direct-entry midwives are still prohibited from catching babies.

That used to be the case in Colorado. It wasn’t until 1993 that the centuries-old practice of direct-entry midwifery was legalized in our state.

Although direct-entry midwives operated in Colorado before then, they did so in the shadows, illegally. Though women were permitted to give birth at home alone, they weren’t allowed to have a direct-entry midwife beside them.

The situation was so stupid that even state lawmakers understood something needed to change.

But the statute that enables directentry midwives to practice in Colorado is “sunsetting” this year and must be renewed if pregnant women are to continue to enjoy the benefits of midwifery in their homes.

There’s little doubt the law will be

renewed. The Department of Regulatory Agencies (DORA), which has the job of regulating midwives, supports renewing the law for another five years with a new sunset date of 2016.

DORA also recommends that the state give limited prescription privileges to midwives so that they can administer intramuscular shots of vitamin K to newborns, Rho(D) immune globulin to Rh-negative mothers, and antihemorrhagic drugs to women who show signs of excess bleeding.

Direct-entry midwives already undergo training for these simple intramuscular shots, and DORA believes it is in the interests of women and their babies that direct-entry midwives be able to administer these sometimes life-saving medications, as they do in many other states where direct-entry midwives practice under state regulation.

DORA’s recommendations make sense and deserve the full support of state lawmakers. The only thing standing in the way might be the medical lobby, which views birth as the territory of physicians, hospitals and CNMs. Though certainly some of their concern about home birth is the result of emergencies they’ve witnessed as doctors, a portion of it is based on financial interests.

To put it bluntly, if every woman who was capable of giving birth safely at home under the skilled care of a midwife did so, those fancy hospital “birth centers” would find themselves hurting for cash. Any opposition they express toward home birth or home VBACs must be understood in this context.

In the end it comes down to one question: Can a woman decide how she wants to give birth and whom she wishes to have attend her, or is she subject to the demands of physicians and hospitals?

The answer ought to be obvious.

and that was simply the beginning. I work two jobs and attend school full time, yet I manage to find the time and money to feed my family of two on less than $200 a month. That is less than $25 a week for each of us (breakfast, lunch and dinner). That same $25 wouldn’t last more than a couple days at any given fast food chain.

University of Washington researcher Adam Drewnowski said, “When you suggest that people buy rice, pasta and beans, you presuppose that they have resources for capital investment for future meals, a kitchen, pots, pans, utensils, gas, electricity, a refrigerator, a home with rent paid, the time to cook. Those healthy rice and beans can take hours; another class bias is that poor people’s time is worthless.”

For the most part this is true. But personal experience has shown me that a homeless mother can provide delicious, healthy, hand-prepared meals for her four dependent children, for more than a month, using nothing more than a fire pit dug in the sand. Housing and transportation are grave issues that demand attention and, for the average individual, these would prove to be too large a challenge to overcome. For this reason, “assuming a kitchen, a stove, running water, etc., cooking is not that time-consuming — it can be done while performing other household chores, or for that matter by using a slow cooker, which takes almost no time at all, since it’s almost entirely unattended.” Cookware can be expensive. Nonetheless, there are these wonderful places commonly referred to as “thrift stores” where $10 can go a long way towards stocking the kitchen with needed supplies. For the financially challenged, $10 can be difficult to spare and yet, when one consid-

ers the long-term benefits of eating healthy, $10 is a trifle compared to the savings.

It is the fast-food connoisseur’s inability to recognize and defeat their laziness that has doomed them to eat themselves to death. Some of the detrimental side effects of the fast food diet are malnutrition, high cholesterol and weight issues that lead to obesity, diabetes and blindness. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI): “When you count the costs of a healthier diet, don’t forget to tally the costs of being overweight ... ‘Cholesterol drugs can cost you $100 a month, and being admitted to a hospital can cost you hundreds per day. So is it really worth it to eat fast food?’ Healthier diets could save Americans more than $200 billion a year in medical costs, lost productivity and expenses caused by death.”

The argument is familiar: It is cheaper and easier to super-size a heart attack in a bag than to prepare a healthy, delicious meal of lean meats and vegetables. And yet, one by one the burger junkie’s excuses, for their slothful form of existence, fall before logic and reason.

Until they are left with a choice: take the initiative to better their lifestyle or continue down the path of self-destruction.

Arch-division on gays Denver Archbishop Charles Chaput must be feeling a little hot under the priestly collar following the decision of Cardinal Sean O’Malley to adopt an admissions policy in Boston’s archdiocese that prohibits discriminating against children of gay parents.

Chaput is the man who decided last May that two preschoolers were unwelcome in Boulder’s Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School because their parents were lesbians.

Jeanette De Melo, director of communications for the Archdiocese of Denver, told Boulder Weekly at the time, “This isn’t a punishment to the children. To allow children in these circumstances to continue in our school would be a cause of confusion for the children themselves, in that what they are being taught in school conflicts with what they experience in the home.”

De Melo went on to say that the archdiocese wasn’t just picking on the children of gay parents, but that all “[p]arents living in open discord with Catholic teaching in areas of faith and morals unfortunately choose by their actions to disqualify their children from enrollment.”

Does this mean that children of single parents are denied permission to attend? Or the children of parents who divorce for reasons not allowed by the Catholic Church? And what about parents who use contraception, don’t observe Lent or make use of in-vitro fertilization?

We asked those questions last May, and were told that the policy holds firm for any “open discord,” though we have yet to hear of kids getting the boot because their mommy and daddy are enjoying the benefits of the pill.

The anti-gay nature of the decision rankled many, sparking outrage even among many Sacred Heart parents.

But now a bona fide Prince of the Church has rejected this reasoning.

“Catholic schools exist for the good of the children, and admission standards must reflect that,” O’Malley wrote on his blog. “I believe all would agree that the good of the child must always be our primary concern.”

Observers say this emerging schism will fuel the conflict over gays and the Catholic Church and the seeming conflict between the free practice of religion and discrimination. Catholic website Lifesite reported on Jan. 14 that O’Malley’s decision has already “won praise from dissident ‘Catholic’ gay rights leaders.”

Will O’Malley’s decision have any impact on the situation in Boulder? After all, this is the Catholic Church, where spiritual truth is less mutable than concrete.

Or as De Melo put it last May, “Each of us does not have the right to decide what is ‘Catholic’ and what is not. To be Catholic means to submit to the teachings of the Church in matters of faith and morals.”

De Melo told Boulder Weekly Tuesday that while Cardinal O’Malley has a loftier title than Chaput, his duties over his archdiocese are no different than those of Chaput, who has not reconsidered his decision.

“The decision of Cardinal O’Malley in his archdiocese does not have any authority over any other diocese in the country,” De Melo says. “[Chaput] believes he made a good decision for the best interests of the school and the children involved, and at the moment he is standing by that decision.”

Asked how such variances can be tolerated in a church that believes in one universal truth, she called it “a practical difference. It’s a difference of policy, it’s not a difference of belief.”

Interesting. In other words, there is some flexibility on issues like this. That means Chaput’s decision to exclude the children of GLBT parents is a choice.

Heath hosts town hall Sen. Rollie Heath, D-Boulder, will host a town hall meeting from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25, at the Meadows Branch Library, 4800 Baseline Rd., in Boulder.

Heath will discuss some of the key issues facing the state and the Legislature in 2011. His top issues include job creation and retention, fiscal and constitutional reform, education, the budget and redistricting. He was recently named a co-chair of the state’s bipartisan Joint Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting, and he will talk about the basics of redistricting and the mandatory public hearings to be held in each of Colorado’s seven congressional districts.

Library director finalists announced The four finalists who have been selected from a nationwide search for Boulder Public Library director will be meeting with the public and giving their perspectives on national library trends at a presentation from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23, in the Council Chambers at the Boulder Municipal Building.

The four finalists are Gerry Garzon, associate director of the Oakland Public Library; Pam Kiesner, library director of the Bellingham Public Library in Washington; Debbi MacLeod, Colorado Talking Books library director and state publications library director of the Colorado State Library; and Greg Mickells, assistant library director at Lincoln City Libraries in Nebraska.

Nonprofits target depression Three local nonprofit organizations have joined together to raise awareness of mental health issues in the community, especially depression, at an event on Feb. 4.

Mental Health Partners, the HOPE Coalition and the National Alliance on Mental Illness Boulder County will host a community breakfast called “Beyond Blue” from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. at The Plaza Hotel in Longmont at 1900 Ken Pratt Blvd.

Open space art show on tap A new art competition benefitting the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Foundation and featuring the county’s open spaces will be held in June.

The foundation and the county’s “plein air” art community are hosting the show, which will feature a combination of invited and juried artists. Along with four invited artists, a panel of jurors will choose additional artists to participate.

“Plein air” is defined as the act of painting outdoors. The painting is usually done in one block of time in the field.

The four local artists invited to participate in the art show are WF Daniel, Molly Davis, Jason Emery and Carol Jenkins. Both professional and non-professional artists are encouraged to participate.

Artists will participate in a twoweek “paint-out” to be held between June 1 and June 14. They will have access to Boulder County Parks and Open Space as well as certain restricted open space areas during that time.

Artists must be residents of Boulder County; use pencil, pastel, oil, watercolor or acrylic; and submit three digital images of their outdoor/en plien air art with their entry form, which is due by March 30. The entry fee is $20.

hen most of us think of the homeless, we picture the bearded, scroungy old man on the corner, holding a hand-scrawled message on cardboard.

Sitting in our nice warm car, we probably avoid eye contact, thinking he’s probably just some guy who took the bus from Denver or somewhere else in hopes of making some cash from rich Boulder types. He’ll probably just spend it on booze, anyway, we say to ourselves.

The drop-in shelter is open just during the day and allows kids to remain anonymous and stop in to do their laundry or get a meal, a shower or clothing.

Attention Homes has an active outreach program in which staff like Neralich hit the streets looking for homeless kids, striking up conversations, building relationships, handing out brochures and trying to get them to come in for basic medical services or just some socks, water, maybe a tarp. Rianoshek says homeless kids’ top needs are food, washing their clothes and communication (including Internet service).

Attention Homes is in need, as well. The organization receives some funding from foundations, but officials say their reliance on private donations will likely increase by about 70 percent in the next year. They also need more volunteers. **** Chris Mitchell was one of the homeless when he came to Boulder four years ago. Now he feeds and clothes them.

He arrived from South Carolina by chance — he was hitchhiking, and when his ride stopped in Boulder, he stayed.

“I didn’t pick Boulder, Boulder picked me,” he says. “This is where I ended up. I tried to leave a couple of times, and it pulled me back.”

Mitchell didn’t stay homeless for long; he got a place in Rollinsville and a job as a cook in Nederland, then moved to Wondervu, where he worked as a dishwasher at the Wondervu Café. After moving to Boulder about a year ago, he began volunteering at the Carriage House, which provides food, clothes and services to the homeless. Then he started working with an emergency warming center created by local churches and the Carriage House, and things just grew from there.

Today, he is manager of operations for Boulder Outreach for Homeless Overflow (BOHO), an organization that gives meals and shelter to the homeless at six local churches when it is especially cold and the Boulder Homeless Shelter is full.

The shelter has 130 beds for walkins, plus 30 more that are reserved for a fee, but those aren’t enough, especially in the winter. BOHO typically housed about 33 people a night last winter, and is averaging 55 people this winter.

Mitchell expects that number to double soon.

“I’m expecting 100 to 110 by February,” he says. “We’ll be close to matching the shelter’s numbers. … We had zero fatalities last winter because of the warming centers.”

He bases the decision on whether to open the church shelters on the weather conditions. The shelters are available from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. when the temperature dips to 32 degrees or lower, or when there is precipitation and it’s 38 degrees or colder.

“I kind of have to be a weatherman,” Mitchell says with a laugh.

BOHO serves breakfast and dinner, and hands out everything from socks and coats to backpacks and books. The books are checked out on an honor system.

“That shows them we trust them,” he says. “It’s all about building people up.”

Both Mitchell and Neralich agree that they are seeing more homeless families because of the economy, many of whom live out of their cars after losing their houses.

“Families would choose to stay together, even if it’s on the street,” Neralich says.

Mitchell adds, “When you get to that point, your family is all you have.”

He says the common stereotype of the homeless is not always accurate.

While a significant number have had substance abuse problems in the past, many are now clean.

“Everyone thinks all homeless people are drunk or a drug addict, and they’re not,” Mitchell says. **** Joy Eckstine, executive director of the Carriage House, says the image of the dirty, alcoholic, middle-aged white guy represents only 10 percent or 20 percent of the homeless population.

“That’s the tip of the iceberg,” she says. “That’s the part of the iceberg you see.”

About 60 percent represent local families, according to Eckstine, and most of that group is composed of women and children, many of whom have been victims of domestic violence.

She adds that there are a host of contributing factors to homelessness aside from addiction issues, including mental illness, abuse, job loss, personal vulnerabilities and other socioeconomic factors.

One of the biggest misperceptions, she says, is that the homeless in Boulder County aren’t from here. She points to a Carriage House survey of Boulder Weekly

homeless people in which 50 percent of respondents said their last place of residence was in Boulder County. The idea that most homeless people take a bus here from Denver or elsewhere is simply misleading, Eckstine says, noting that it is costly for a homeless person to travel by bus between Boulder and Denver.

Contrary to the myth that homeless people can make a pretty penny by begging, the Carriage House survey of its clients found that the average monthly income among homeless was $219.

“No one’s getting rich on disability,” Eckstine says.

On the other hand, she explains, the perception that most homeless people begging on the street corner are going to use the money to buy booze is probably pretty accurate.

If you want to give them something, Eckstine says, keep some granola bars or other items in your car to hand out at the intersection. If they are grateful, they probably weren’t going to use the money for booze.

“You can tell a lot by someone’s reaction when you give a granola bar,” she says.

In addition, the Carriage House sells vouchers that can be given away to the homeless and redeemed for goods and services at many local vendors — and they can’t be used to buy alcohol or tobacco.

She also encourages people to make eye contact with homeless people they encounter, and to smile at them, because they feel ashamed, and it means a lot to simply be acknowledged. She says her homeless clients beam when they tell her that someone spoke to them.

“Homeless people are despised, loathed and hated,” Eckstine says. “We use language to describe homeless people that we wouldn’t use to describe another race. … We fear that which is ‘different’ and ‘other.’”

The Carriage House is a day shelter and resource center that also runs the “Community Table,” a nightly meal at downtown churches. Breakfast and lunch is served on weekdays at its 1120 ½ Pine St. facility, which also houses a computer lab, clothing and other supplies for the homeless. The Carriage House serves more than 3,000 different clients a year, distributing basic supplies like toiletry items as well as offering an array of services, from medical care to an art group to addiction recovery to job counseling.

Getting a job can be difficult, Eckstine says, since employers are wary of hiring a homeless person. So the Carriage House has a collection of nice clothing that can be borrowed for job interviews and a voicemail program that lets homeless clients have their own

personalized message when prospective employers call. These things help put them on an equal footing with others when job-hunting, she explains.

According to Eckstine, the Carriage House saw a 16 percent increase in the number of people it served in 2009.

On the other hand, Homeless Outreach Providing Encouragement (HOPE), an outreach organization based in Longmont, saw its caseload double between 2008 and 2009. **** HOPE Executive Director Bray Patrick-Lake was serving as a Longmont police officer when she saw firsthand the need for an organization like the one she now leads.

“I used to work the graveyard shift,” she says. “That’s where I saw the need.

I would see a lot of the same people, and realized they were not getting the resources they needed.”

HOPE was formed in 2007 after a winter in which five homeless people in the county died from exposure to the elements.

“We felt like, for our county, that was completely unacceptable,” PatrickLake recalls.

Now, her organization uses a network of 250 volunteers who work in shifts to distribute basic supplies (and food prepared by the group’s “Soup Angels”) to Longmont’s homeless between 5:30 and 10 p.m. Their truck hits the roads seven nights a week in the winter and six in the summer.

Patrick-Lake says the team truck has a regular stop at the city’s police complex at 225 Kimbark St., then spends the rest of its shift driving the streets in search of people in need. The team also works closely with police, providing them with backpacks stocked with supplies to hand out during HOPE’s offhours and taking intoxicated homeless people to the hospital for detox when necessary.

HOPE is funded primarily through foundation grants and donations from individuals and groups; only about 10 percent of its revenue comes from city and county sources.

Another Longmont organization, the Outreach United Resource (OUR) Center, has been helping the homeless — primarily families with children — move toward self-sufficiency since 1986. The OUR Center provides emergency food, transportation, utilities, furniture, minor medical prescriptions, referrals for emergency shelter and homeless-prevention help, including rent and utility assistance. **** An increase in homeless numbers is likely to be reflected in the “point-intime” count being conducted this week

not just because there are more unemployed due to the economy, but because it is expected to be a more thorough count: This year the county has assigned two employees to work on it instead of one.

Agatha Moya, who has worked at the OUR Center, is coordinating the count in Longmont, which has the county’s highest percentage of homeless people. Leslie Gibson is handling the rest of the county. They say they have been working closely with police and the above-mentioned agencies in recent months to identify areas where homeless people congregate. They are dividing up those areas among the volunteers who will be administering the surveys in two-hour shifts over the 24-hour period.

Gibson and Moya have also enlisted the help of the homeless organizations and dozens of other groups to distribute point-in-time surveys to their clients.

They are also working with local school districts.

The data will be used by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to determine the allocation of funding for transitional housing, shelter care and permanent housing for homeless in Colorado.

Moya says the Hispanic homeless community has likely been under-represented in past counts, so she has brought in more Spanish-speaking volunteers. All volunteers undergo training on things like how to approach homeless people without alienating them.

“It’s a very sensitive and delicate issue,” Moya says. “They’re very suspicious. They ask, ‘What are you going to do with this information?’”

As an incentive to complete the survey, respondents will receive a kit with basic necessities like toiletry items.

The anonymous survey includes questions about where people spent the previous night, what prompted their current situation and demographics like age and race/ethnicity.

Gibson says surveys will be completed only by those who identify themselves as homeless. She explained that some people don’t think they are homeless — they view their car or a spot near the creek as their home.

Echoing the county’s other advocates, Gibson stresses that while substance abuse is among the many factors that commonly contribute to homelessness, these people are not all drunks.

But some are. She says one told her that he didn’t become homeless because of alcohol.

He said he started drinking to forget his current situation.

Pharmaca powers up with new solar technology

he 1970s oil industry crisis and shortage of fossil fuels inspired a surge of enthusiasm for new solar technology that put gigantic, chunky, photovoltaic panels on many a U.S. home.

But the solar cells didn’t always work well, and the installation and up-keep expenses were high. As the energy crisis passed, people went back to their former usages. Disused panels became an eyesore.

When invited to view 20 new solar panels on a Pharmaca Integrative Pharmacy building, I’ll admit I had a momentary mental image of antiquated slab-like objects on the roof, catching rays.

The modern reality at the Pharmaca at 1647 Pearl St. in Boulder is a single row of flat, slim panels forming a semi-transparent awning over the front doors.

“It’s kind of a prototype for a small commercial business,” says Steve Schoo, marketing communications director for Independent Power Systems, based in Boulder. “But we’ve done hundreds of custom installations on residences and much bigger commercial buildings in three states. This one will provide about 5,400 kilowatt hours a year for this store, and offset about 100 tons of carbon dioxide.”

It’s a good fit for a business chain built on complementary medicine and a design style of environmentally friendly features such as bamboo flooring.

The solar panels are 3.72 kW Sanyo Hit Double panels. Their design allows electricity to be generated from direct sunlight on the panels’ fronts, as well as the ambient light reflected on the back surfaces.

At the front of the store, monitors display information about energycollection data and the carbon offset.

most buildings in less than a week.

The various current energy incentives, plus Xcel Energy’s rebates for solar system installations, he says, will pay for half or more of the system’s costs.

“These systems will pay for themselves in about eight to 10 years for residences, about five years for commercial buildings. Of course, that’s tied to the cost of energy rates.

Right now, the rates are relatively low in Colorado, compared to, say, California. We expect they’re more likely to continue to rise.”

These types of power systems are not meant to get you off the grid, mind you. Rather, they’re tied into the existing electricity utility and “cooperate” with the grid, Schoo says, like an energy bank.

When snow and lack of sunshine keep the solar panels from generating electricity, all the extra power that has been going to the utility can be drawn for use, at no extra cost.

The panels are warranted for 25 years and are maintenance-free.

Independent Power Systems was founded in 1996 by Tony Boniface.

The company has installed its technology on the Montana State Capitol building and the Coors Field scoreboard in Denver. In Boulder, other installations can be seen on condominiums at 1505 Pearl St. and 1155 Canyon Blvd., as well as in the Holiday Neighborhood.

nyone who has followed the career of Robert Randolph & the Family Band knows that they love giving people a good time. From their legendary, epic shows at The Wetlands, to the insanely catchy groove of tracks like “Ain’t Nothing Wrong With That,” to the Sly & the Family Stone-tinged sound of songs like “I Need More Love,” Randolph, his steel-pedal guitar skills and his band have spent years building an incredible fan base by giving people a chance to have some fun for a couple hours. “To play music and use the influence I have from church and things like that, to connect with the world and uplift people. I think that’s just why I’m here.”

Growing up in a House of God community may have helped give him his moral center, but as he admits, it also limited his access to music.

“There’s a lot of music that I sort of missed out on. I mean, I wasn’t alive for it anyway,” he adds quickly with a laugh, “but I just never really thought about going back and looking into stuff.”

And this is where producer T-Bone Burnett played such a crucial role, not just in terms of helping Randolph create the tone and scope of this record, but also in terms of helping Randolph see what he had missed, and what many others are still missing today. Burnett brought in archival songs for Randolph to listen to that went as far back as the 1920s, and doing so allowed Randolph to not only connect blues with rock and gospel, but also to connect a sense of the past with the present.

“T-Bone helped tremendously,” Randolph says, “by getting me to go back and really study a lot of this stuff and understand this was the earliest form of American music. And that this is what artists — over time — can become: great artists. You know, like Dylan, Zeppelin and Muddy Waters.

even if just a little bit. And despite his easygoing demeanor, it is clear this is one call he is willing to take up, one responsibility he is proud to have.

“I like having that sort of burden on my shoulders of being a guy who’s gonna use music and use songwriting to really uplift people,” he admits. “These are depressing times we’re in. A lot of people are sort of looking for a show they can go to or something they can do to seek an answer. I just like inspiring people and giving people this outlook that I had a chance to witness and be a part of, growing up in church and whatnot. Everything is sort of heavensent and it’s all a part of life and the growing process of each person.

Sometimes bad things happen for the future of the good, you know, and you’ve just got to learn to accept that because that’s what it is.”

Randolph does not like to back down from a challenge when there is something he can do to help via his music, but music is such a driving force in his life that he probably would not be able to sit on the sidelines during troublesome times even if he wanted to.

“Music is what keeps me going!”

Randolph exclaims. “It keeps me happy.

It keeps me … sane, I guess. Can’t live without it.”

Finding the fun in painting

Sam Jablon’s featureless faces come from a happy place

ther than his perpetually paintstained clothes, Binghamton, N.Y., native Sam Jablon cut a deceptively ordinary figure during his four years (2005-09) at Naropa University, where he graduated with an interdisciplinary degree in writing, meditation and visual art. A quiet and friendly long-haired young man with obvious talent and a penchant for keeping mostly subdued — but focused — in class, Jablon candidly expressed himself in art, poetry and conversation. On and off campus, he subtly connected with established artists and writers who gave him wisdom and opportunities. Now, living and working in Brooklyn, the 24-year-old Jablon is using a lot of what he learned in Boulder to keep moving forward in his life and career as an artist.

“Brooklyn is a whole different world,” Jablon said in a phone conversation from Binghamton just after Christmas. “When I started out at Naropa it was really warm and welcoming and it was easy to set up a life and make friends and meet people. Brooklyn is hard and cold and there’s 100,000 people trying to do the exact same thing that you’re doing. It’s really competitive. It’s expensive. It’s also amazing, though.”

Face It, Jablon’s latest exhibition of works on wood and paper, features vibrantly colored oil and oil pastel paintings produced in the past year. As in many of his Boulder-era paintings, undecipherable or covered-up poems and darkly cartoonish heads — either sans faces or with seemingly vacuous features — consistently appear throughout Face It, which will line the walls of Naropa’s Nalanda campus from Friday until March 1. The vacant heads often seem simply amusing at first glance, but the exhibition is really about looking at life through a fearless lens, according to Jablon.

“In my current work, sometimes faces are kind of obscured and lost in all the colors, but they’re always part of the painting,” the artist explains. “[Face It] is about facing reality, facing whatever’s in front of you.

If there’s a theme to the show, that’s it: going right into whatever’s in front of you and not shying away or backing away because of fear or because you don’t want to look at it.”

Moving from Boulder to Brooklyn was a jarring experience for Jablon, although invitations to study and create art have already taken him from Vermont to Berlin to Greece and — in a few months — China.

“New York’s hard, but I love it,” he says, “It’s the complete opposite of Boulder and Naropa, and witnessing a more urban life has definitely changed my work. Plus there’s so many different kinds of artists Boulder Weekly

and so many different kinds of art that, for me, it’s really opened my mind to the possibilities of what you can do. I find it really inspiring, and it’s a great place to be in your 20s.”

After meeting several prestigious East Coast artists and poets, such as the eccentric spoken-word artist Bob Holman, through Naropa’s Summer Writing Program, Jablon was able to instantly connect with the New York scene when he arrived. He’s been working with Holman and others in Manhattan and helping design sets for the TV show Hell’s Kitchen, and recently he even curated a Bowery Poetry Club exhibition for emerging artists.

Jablon says getting involved is much easier than most young people think.

“I’m finding that people are really friendly. If you want to talk to some famous artist and you just see them out — because they’re all over the place — and you just go up and talk to them, they’ll probably give you a minute or two. In Boulder, Jablon worked as an assistant to the Argentinean artist Ana Maria Hernando, who he says taught him “how to function as an artist,” and he’s excited about seeing her this week. The exhilarating ranges of orange and pink in Colorado’s dynamic sunsets are also still a huge influence on Jablon’s paintings, which often juxtapose the whimsy of Picasso and a more psychedelic, drip-heavy version of Mark Rothko’s bold lines. But perhaps the most consistent influence on Jablon’s work has been Jean-Michel Basquiat. The late New York neoexpressionist painter’s marriage of unruly graffiti, high art and urban symbology has served as an inspiration for Jablon’s work since the young artist heard of Basquiat as a teenager.

“He’s someone I’ve always understood,” Jablon says. “I’ve always understood what the work is about and it’s always spoken to me.

Every time I look at his work I find something new. So I feel we share a lot of similarities, but his work’s much more angry than mine. There’s a violence to it that I don’t feel like my work has. There was a complexity to his work that I would like to be able to use without copying Basquiat. I don’t want to just be a copy of Basquiat, but he’s one of the first artists I looked at and really went, ‘Wow.’” Jablon’s most recent works, including the giant 72-inch-by-48-inch “Who Knows 2moro,” reveal his respect for Basquiat by merging wild streaks of color and intense faces with brutal depictions of city life. For “Who Knows 2moro,” Jablon even incorporated found objects — such as a bottle cap found on the street during a nasty brawl in his neighborhood, a subway ticket and pieces of exhibition flyers — into the painting.

Not surprisingly, however, Susan Jablon — a renowned Binghamton-based mosaic artist — continues to be her son’s biggest inspiration. Sam and his mother (who first taught him how to paint at age 2) often collaborate on public art projects and mosaics for Hell’s Kitchen as well as Extreme Makeover: Home Edition. But it’s the younger Jablon’s artintense childhood that resonates so strongly to this day.

“My mom’s awesome,” he says. “She showed me that art is fun, and that’s still where I go when I’m painting. I grew up in this massive studio just throwing paint at the walls, and that really shaped how I still see painting. I have a much better control of color now, what colors I want and how I want them to fall, but the influence I have from being a young child painting, I think I’m still going for the same thing.”

Joshua Redman brings his hand-picked trio to Macky

oshua Redman is drawn to collaboration. For his entire career, the tenor saxophonist has surrounded himself with the best musicians in modern jazz, creating a true give-and-take on the bandstand and breaking out of the standard leader-accompanist mold. Redman, who is equally adept at soprano saxophone, takes great strides to develop true musical partnerships with his bandmates.

“I try to put together bands of musicians that are way better than I am. That’s how I learn, and that’s how I grow,” Redman says, chatting on the phone from his San Francisco Bay-area home. “Being a leader, at the end of the day, just means you write the checks; if the gig gets canceled, you still have to pay the cats.”

Redman brings his longtime collaborators, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Gregory Hutchinson, to the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Macky Auditorium Sunday, Jan. 23, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $30. The group will be performing in a saxophone trio format, a small ensemble Redman has used with increasing frequency since 2004.

The piano-less tenor saxophone trio is embedded in the history of jazz. First introduced to a wide audience by Sonny Rollins on his 1957 recordings Way Out West and A Night at the Village Vanguard, the saxophone-bass-drums combination has been explored by some of the music’s most notable players. Younger saxophonists like J.D. Allen and Marcus Strickland have also released trio recordings in the last few years.

Redman’s first foray into the form came with 2007’s Back East, which he recorded with Penman and Hutchinson. The saxophonist expanded on the trio in 2009 by combining two small groups — two drummers, two bassists, one saxophone — on Compass.

Unlike artists who have viewed trio-playing as a passing accomplishment, Redman has stuck with the three-piece ensemble.

“[The trio] is something that a lot of saxophonists at some point in their musical lives gravitate to, and some might see it as a rite of passage for a tenor saxophonist. I never looked at it that way,” Redman says.

“I love the freedom of the saxophone trio. When things are going well, when everyone is focused and locked in, it can be one of the freest and the most spontaneous and most exhilarating formats for me to play in.”

The piano is usually seen as the anchor of any ensemble — a chordal instrument that grounds the rest of the group in a specific key and provides rhythmic encouragement during solos. Simply put, the piano usually keeps the band on track. With the trio, Redman plays double duty, paying acute attention to melody, harmony and the overall structure of each tune.

In trio mode, Redman’s band moves organically through each piece, seamlessly blending the opening melody into the solo section. The instruments work together to navigate the peaks and valleys in each

tune. This fluidity derives from relationships Redman has developed during the past 20 years. While he usually performs as a trio with Penman and Hutchinson, he also plays with another bassist and drummer. The four artists know Redman as a musician as well as he knows them; the saxophonist won’t attempt trio performances with anyone else.

“I always want to play with the best musicians, but when you’re playing just saxophone, bass and drums, for me I really have to have the A-plus-plus-plus list cats,” he says. “There’s a very small handful of musicians with which I feel comfortable going into battle playing saxophone trio; if I can’t get one of those guys, I’ll generally try to put some sort of other band together.”

Redman’s collaborative efforts don’t stop at trios.

He’s been working in a duo format with pianist Brad Mehldau, and he joined the collaborative James Farm — which unites pianist Aaron Parks, Penman and drummer Eric Harland — in 2008. The group finished mastering a new album this month that is due out sometime in the spring. Redman also was the first leader of the eight-piece SFJAZZ Collective, a revolving cast of musicians that now features Mark Turner in the tenor spot.

Even surrounded by his trusted musical friends, who all know by now how to work in their roles, Redman pushes to keep things fresh. Searching for new material might lead to a live performance of Coldplay’s “Clocks” or a Led Zeppelin hit nestled into a set of original compositions and jazz standards.

While some listeners point to this penchant for blending pop into jazz as a statement on the music’s future, for Redman, it’s simply one more way to keep things interesting on stage. After all, presenting engaging, exciting music is his main goal, whatever the format.

Lyrics Born has a calling

he term “holistic” doesn’t seem appropriate when describing a Friday night hip-hop show, but it’s strikingly apt when describing the experience of attending a Lyrics Born concert.

Generally speaking, the audience comes for a good time, and the Bay Area rapper certainly plans to “throw down” and “party hard.” But after several years in the music industry, Lyrics Born has provided as much inspiration as perspiration — and it’s that aspect of his career that’s most important.

“When I first started, it was an excuse for me to get high, meet girls, party and all that stuff,” says the Japanese-American artist. “It still is fun and it should be fun, but somewhere along the way, I realized that what I have is a gift. I realized that gift comes from somewhere. It’s my belief that it’s a gift from God. At that turning point, I realized that music and the ability to create art and affect people is a spiritual thing for me. It’s something that I have to respect.”

The turning point came after a few years in the game when he recorded a single called “Balcony Beach.” After several typical party singles, LB found the typical post-show banter changing as the audience absorbed his material at a different level.

“The comments I’d get after a show started to change,” he says. “It wasn’t like, ‘You’re dope.’ It was more like, ‘Wow, this song really helped me through some rough shit.’ They were describing my songs with adjectives that were much deeper than before. People were finding what I do to be multidimensional, and at that point I realized it was affecting people in a way I never intended. I really liked it and it made it feel like I was doing some-

thing more important than before.”

Lyrics Born’s latest album, As U Were, was released late last fall and should reap similar comments, given its context and meaning for both rapper and listener. LB calls the album a coping mechanism for himself and his fans, saying it was named after his ability to stay the course and be himself in the

midst of a rough couple of years. Songs that speak to such themes are bound to resonate with the listener long after the last beats pulse and pound.

Despite success that’s carried him to top selling status on iTunes and collaborations with Jurassic 5, Kasabian, DJ Shadow and others, it’s the emotionally enduring quality of the work that keeps him going. As he says, “It’s so incredible when you can take the things that have negatively affected you and thrown you for a loop and reroute that energy through art and turn it into a song that affects the world in a positive way.”

The upcoming Denver appearance is part of a tour heading eastward after spending the fall up and down the West Coast. Lyrics Born spent the latter part of 2010 with a heavier-hitting line-up of Chali 2na, Rakim and Dilated Peoples, whereas in 2011, he will be carrying the load alongside upand-coming Canadian hip-hop trio Keys N Krates.

That’s good news for longtime fans of LB, considering he says he’s reaching all the way back to his first LP (1997’s Latyrx) and beyond. The live band of Keys N Krates and the DJ element provided by LB’s Mixed Re-View (his backing band of vocalist Joyo Velarde and DJ D-Sharp) craft a musical blend that Lyrics Born says he’s been waiting at least eight to 10 years to put together.

“If you’re asking me for any surprises, the answer is ‘yes,’ since I’ll surprise myself with what we play,” he says with a laugh. “But we’ll definitely come and throw down, because all we want to do is come and party incredibly hard. And Denver never disappoints.”

T

here are lots of jumps that can rival the buildings in downtown Denver for height — but not many that are actually right next to those buildings.

That jump is being built right now in Civic Center Park, and on Jan. 25 and 26, it will be the host to a lot of big air.

Big Air Denver is one of a series of ski and snowboard events held around the world, usually at ski resorts, but recently occurring in larger city settings. The most recent was held in Spain, in addition to events in London, Stockholm and Seoul.

Now Denver is the setting for the 106-foot-high, almost 300-foot-long jump, in conjunction with Mile High Snowfest, going on Jan. 25–30.

A collaboration between the Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS), the United States Ski and Snowboard Association (USSA), and the Metro Denver Sports Commission, Big Air is an event unlike any other.

“The idea isn’t to bring another skiing event to the mountains, but to have it in a young, fun event in the city,” says Sue

There are two nights of competition. The first, held on Jan. 25 from 5 to 8 p.m., is the Nature Valley Big Air Challenge featuring the Battle of the Brands. This event features three-man teams in a head-to-head single elimination challenge. The three brands committed to sending skiers so far are Icelantic, Armada and Volkl. Athletes competing for each team have yet to be announced, though Tom Wallisch, Freeskier’s Skier of the year for 2010, has committed to the event.

The second night will feature the LG FIS World Cup Snowboard Big Air. This event is unique because it’s the first snowboard World Cup Big Air to be held in the United States.

It will be an individual competition, with teams from Austria, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Switzerland and the United States all sending competitors.

“That’s kind of exciting because it is the first World Cup Big Air in the U.S,” says Eric Webster, event coordinator for USSA. “People

are coming from all over the world to compete in Denver.”

USSA, the national governing agency for skiing and snowboarding, is handling the competition aspects of the event, and in doing so, hopes to encourage more slopestyle events.

“The effort on our side is to support FIS freestyle events in North America with a long-term goal of getting slopestyle into the Olympics,” Webster says.

Slopestyle events are those in both snowboarding and skiing where participants try to land tricks with style and height. Slopestyle has gained popularity, and is especially popular at the X Games, another ski and snowboard competition, which will be held in Aspen Jan. 27 through Jan. 30. Many athletes will fly into Colorado for both events.

As far as Big Air goes, though, participants should be able to get a lot of air — and a lot of exposure. As many as 10,000 tickets can be sold to the event, and it looks like the park will fill up, Baldwin says.

Adding to the madness, Big Air just announced concerts to accompany the events. The ski competition on Tuesday will feature Switchfoot after the awards, and the snowboard competition has OneRepublic as its top billing, playing between the heats of the competition and the finals.

The SnowSports Industry America Snow Show will also be going on Jan. 27-30. Not open to the public, the SIA Snow Show is the largest snow sports retail exhibition in the world, and garners a lot of attention and around 19,000 exhibitors hungry for more snowgoing activities.

“SIA was looking for more activities around that time,” Baldwin says.

So Big Air, nestled between the Snow Show and the X Games, is ideal for observers, but not as great for athletes.

“The USSA has done a Herculean effort of lining up practice and event schedules so that if the athletes wanted, they can do both,” Baldwin says. “It’s not ideal for them to be one day apart, but it really works around SIA.” Between Big Air, the SIA Snow Show and X Games,

Colorado is cementing its reputation as a hotbed for snow-related activity.

“It only helps to grow skiing and snowboarding’s profile into a bigger community,” Baldwin says.

“Our goal is to make the event a little more mainstream, and widen the fan base.”

Tickets to the event are available at www.bigairdenver.com, and are $45 for each night, or $80 for both nights. The Denver Sports Commission has issued a promotion to Boulder Weekly readers that takes $15 off the ticket price, and offers a $99 family four-pack, hoping to widen that fan base even further. Big Air promises to be a big event for anyone interested in skiing and snowboarding, or just for an event unlike any other Denver has seen before.

“In normal cases, [Big Air events] are at a resort,” said Webster. “Because this is a steel structure in downtown Denver, it brings a lot more attention to it. It really sets this apart from other events scheduled throughout the season.”

Unwelcome drama

nexpectedly sour, The Dilemma barely qualifies as a comedy.

Though it offers plenty of larky scenes, such as Vince Vaughn and Kevin James man-dancing together at the Green Mill (the popular Chicago jazz club) or taking in a Blackhawks game, it’s darker than any of the ads suggest. Audiences deserve the truth going into director Ron Howard’s film, which is fundamentally misdirected — or rather, directed in a style to be named later — and all over the place in a way Howard’s films rarely are.

It’s a Vaughn vehicle foremost, and like the recent Adam Sandler hit Grown Ups, The Dilemma allows the Vaughn character to treat everyone around him like an inferior species, swan around with a smirk and get the last word in every sequence. Chicago is full of guys like Vaughn, albeit shorter. You know: sports-mad, agreeably insensitive, sweet-underneath lugs, all wishing their Vince Vaughn patter will somehow end up charming the likes of Jennifer Aniston.

Vaughn and co-star Kevin James play Ronny and Nick, best pals and business partners in a Chicago engine-design firm. Ronny is dating a chef ( Jennifer Connelly) who has seen Ronny through his gambling addiction and is cool, we’re told, because she wears a Cubs jersey. Nick, insecure and ulcer-prone, is married to live wire Geneva (Winona Ryder, who never needs

much encouragement in the overacting live-wire direction) whom Vaughn’s character, Ronny, once slept with in college. By accident, Ronny spies Geneva making out with an apparent paramour (Channing Tatum, playing somebody who’s either an idiot, psychotic, a puppy dog or something else entirely; hard

Poorly timed gun fetishization

lipping into a funk while watching half of Los Angeles get shot up in the second half of The Green Hornet, I was struck by the sheer unluckiness of this film’s timing.

In the wake of the recent massacre in Tucson, Ariz., it’s suddenly, temporarily, a little harder to laugh off scene after scene of obsessive gun fetishization and mass slaughter in a superhero vigilante lark. I’m as much of a hypocrite as any moviegoer on the issue of diversionary screen violence. I’ve lapped up more than my share. I appreciate the comic impulse behind this $120 million bauble; director Michel Gondry’s action comedy at least has the nerve to seek out more comedy than action.

But the script by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, tailored for Rogen in the title role, rides a streak of blasé raunch and overscaled action smack into a series of walls, each spray-painted with phrases beginning with “Too.” Too much. Too numbing. Too coy. And ultimately, too violent. By the time the underworld villain played by Christoph Waltz of Inglourious Basterds gets his eyes gouged out and the auxiliary villain (no spoilers) is impaled by a falling car, the fun has been sidelined altogether.

Too bad, because there are some grace notes along the way. Unlike Batman or Superman, the Green Hornet is a niche figure, with which contemporary filmmakers can do whatever they like. Gondry’s sense of the fantastic, mixed with his attention to everyday 38 January 20, 2011

Allan Loeb’s screenplay sets itself up as a farce but almost instantly begins collapsing into therapy. As Ronny wrestles with the decision to tell Nick about his wife’s infidelity, endangering their progress on a make-or-break engine-design project, Loeb’s script takes the easy way out, demonizing Ryder’s character in such a way that an 11th-hour attempt at re-humanizing her does not work. The jokes, when and where they can be found, are puerile, and continually give Vaughn the moviestar catbird seat. Loeb can write; I enjoyed a lot of his work on Things We Lost in the Fire, Wall Street 2 and even the unpopular rom-com The Switch. Here, in flashes, you see the movie that should have been: Vaughn handles a key, wry moment (Ronny’s illadvised anniversary toast to his lover’s parents) with the panache he’s known for. Elsewhere, though, it’s hard even to track the intentions of a given scene, and Howard’s indecisive pacing clarifies little.

The movie was originally called Cheaters, which hints at the story’s notion that we all harbor secrets in a relationship, some of them white lies, some of them toxic. It’s a fine starting point for a lively, challenging commercial comedy. I hope someone makes it.

reality, has led in previous projects to the glory that is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, in addition to the more mixed but stimulating Science of Sleep and Be Kind Rewind. Gondry was pegged to direct The Green Hornet years ago, in an earlier incarnation; his time eventually came, and, with Rogen aboard, a straightforward, predictable result was virtually un-guaranteed.

Rogen and Goldberg, who wrote Superbad when they were still teenagers, retool The Green Hornet for a world overpopulated with superheroes and superhero movies.

Britt Reid (Rogen) is the playboy son of an L.A. newspaper baron (Tom Wilkinson) who dies by bee sting, leaving Britt in charge. Because he has nothing better to do — the script works more by whim and caprice than compelling plotting — he teams up with one of his father’s employees ( Jay Chou, waging a touching, occasionally decipherable struggle with English) to become the Green Hornet, aided by faithful, patronized sidekick Kato.

What works here? The little things. When Kato invents a “gas bomb” that puts its victims to sleep, the first version knocks out Britt for a full 11 days (he wakes up with a considerable beard). That’s funny. It’s funny to see Kato in his underfurnished studio apartment updating his resume after his battle with Britt.

The car — the tricked-out Black Beauty, with machine guns embedded in the doorframes and an ancient LP player for atmosphere — looks fantastic.

But Gondry’s action sequences tend toward the lengthy and the shapeless. The post-production 3-D is just about useless. And the enjoyment one gets from the body count, the scenes of people being crushed, pummeled or machine-gunned, well ... this isn’t the week for The Green Hornet, at least for me.

The film is pretty messed up even without a recent tragic event hanging over its head.

Produced and directed by Andrew Jarecki (director of the Academy Award-nominated documentary Capturing the Friedmans and producer of Catfish), the film was inspired by the story of Robert Durst, scion of the wealthy Durst family. Mr. Durst was suspected but never tried for killing his wife, Kathie, who disappeared in 1982 and was never found. The film captures the emotion and complexion of this real-life unsolved mystery. She can’t or won’t let go of her emotions and, as the cliche goes, “get it all out.” She is moving on but shutting down.

Zone Denver offers healthy alternative for delivered food

t the stroke of midnight on Jan. 1, people everywhere tend to make a lot of promises to themselves — resolutions to eat healthier or work out more, reduce personal stress or enjoy living.

It’s mid-January, and many of those profound resolutions are already succumbing to the practicalities of everyday life.

With work and school, family life, social life and everything in between, it can be difficult to find the time to chip away at personal goals.

This is especially true for the goals that require planning and preparation, such as coordinating a diet. Often people just don’t take the time to sit down to a healthy meal, opting for an easy out of drive-throughs and frozen dinners.

Zone Denver, a diet delivery service that came to Colorado in 2008 and operates a kitchen in Boulder, offers one solution to the great debate of fast food and fatty versus homemade and healthy, delivering freshly made food to doorsteps all along the Front Range, including Boulder County.

Jeff Sherman, president of Zone Denver, says that his company aims to provide people with the help and guidance they need to stick to their resolutions.

“Eating well is not simply eating,” Sherman says.

“You have to plan for it, you have to prepare it, you have to eat at certain times.”

Sherman says he believes that many people who start a diet are successful primarily because the beginning stages are filled with the excitement of

shopping and preparing different foods. Three weeks down the line, it is for these same reasons that dieters begin to feel bored or inconvenienced.

Zone Denver, Sherman says, cuts out the planning and delivers nutritional meals fresh the day they are made.

“You wake up in the morning, open your door and there’s your breakfast, your lunch, your dinner, a snack — everything you need for the entire day,” he says. “You don’t have to do a darn thing except drink a lot of water.”

Sherman, inspired by his time as business manager for the original Zone Diet delivery service in New York City, started his Zone service in Seattle in 2002, and then later expanded to San Francisco and Los Angeles. He subsequently sold those companies in favor of bringing the business to Colorado. Zone, he says, utilizes local chefs and kitchen facilities in any market it opens in.

Menu options at Zone Denver are consistently rotated, Sherman says, so that customers are always given variety. From breakfasts of whole wheat French toast to lunches of chicken Caesar salad and dinners of lemon pepper red snapper, meals are tailored to the tastes and nutritional needs of each client, with a 40-30-30 ratio of carbohydrates, lean protein and favorable fats.

“Our people are successful — they lose weight,” Sherman says. “But not everybody that comes on the program is doing it for weight loss.”

Nancy Speck, a 63-year-old Denver resident who used Zone Denver last fall, says that she started with the program because she was tired of cooking.

“When you’re just cooking for one person, it gets pretty boring sometimes what you end up cooking for yourself,” Speck says.

Speck says that she enjoyed the variety and gourmet quality of Zone Denver, as well as the ability to specialize her menu options. She also says that eating better — and not stressing about what to cook — increased her energy levels and helped her to lose weight, even though that wasn’t what she was looking for.

“I wasn’t really doing it for a diet to lose weight so much as just to eat healthier, but I did end up losing about five pounds,” Speck says.

Speck says that she will likely start with Zone Denver again in a couple of weeks, after she’s gotten herself settled into the new year. see ZONE Page 45

ell, this week’s dessert isn’t the prettiest of treats, but looks aren’t everything, right? At least that’s what they tell me.

This treat falls into the “but she’s got a great personality” category of the blind date set-up world.

Speaking of dates, that’s what we are baking up. Dark Chocolate Chunk Date Bars. I love dates, and am excited about this dessert, but they sometimes get a bad rap. Lots of turned up noses when I whip out a date instead of a cookie for a snack. But I’m slowly convincing the people around me how tasty and nutritious they can be.

Dates tend to be naturally sweet, and combining them with some dark chocolate chunks really balances out the flavor. Adding some pecans for crunch rounds out the texture and balances the sweetness this treat naturally provides.

Maybe if you’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places, these “date” bars can help you find your new one and only. I’m thinking you have a date-themed party.

Lots of dated-themed dishes (they are great savory or sweet) and have all your friends invite some fresh blood for you to show off your baking talent.

These bars are simple, so no need to worry about spending hours in the kitchen. Of course you can pretend you did — never hurts to make people think you spent a lot of time on them. I do it all the time.

I’m thinking maybe spin the bottle would be nice to add to the date night. Make sure you eat one of these tasty bars before you go in for the kiss, and your mouth will have a nice hint of sweetness to it.

stock a little bubbly to help things along, and most importantly, give yourself permission to have a great time. Actually, most important, let me know how the date bars and the date night turn out. I’m very nosy, fill me in people!

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it and invite me over when it’s done.

Dark Chocolate Chunk Date Bars 1 1/4 cup flour 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/4 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups pitted and chopped dates 1 cup chopped pecans 3/4 cup dark chocolate chunks 1 egg 3/4 cup brown sugar 3/4 cup milk 2 tsp. vanilla Powdered sugar for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Coat a 9-inch-by-13-inch baking pan with non-stick cooking spray.

In a small bowl, combine flour, baking powder, salt. Fold in dates, pecans and chocolate chunks. Set aside.

In a large bowl, stir together egg and brown sugar. Add in milk and vanilla. Mix well.

Add flour mixture to wet mixture. Stir slowly and gently until well-combined. Pour batter into prepared pan and bake until top is golden brown, 25-30 minutes. Cool completely. Dust generously with powdered sugar. Cut into bars and enjoy!

TIDBITES Food happenings around town Pork chops and hair chops February marks the 18th annual Stout Month and the 13th annual Chop Month at all three Mountain Sun pubs.

Several owners and employees will chop their hair into unusual styles in preparation for the Denver and Boulder Chop King competition that will take place at the end of the month.

Vine Street Pub in Denver will hold its Chop Month competition on Sunday, Feb. 27, at 10 p.m.

Public voting on contestant hairstyles will be encouraged, and winners will receive prizes of pork chops, cash and beer.

The event will also feature live bagpipe music and Stout Month drink specials.

The Boulder version of the Chop Month competition will take place at 10 p.m. on Feb. 28 at the Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery.

Rare food, rare experience Arugula Bar e Ristorante is hosting a Le Marche wine dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 6:30 p.m.

The dinner, inspired by cuisine typical of the Le Marche region of Italy, will consist of five courses accompanied by a variety of unique wines.

Juanita’s closing to reinvent itself Juanita’s Mexican Food, a Boulder landmark for almost 28 years, is scheduled to close March 1.

Though the restaurant is closing, owner Roger Berardi and partners Michael and Annette Kretz aren’t going anywhere. The 1043 Pearl St. location will be renovated and reopened as a new restaurant that Berardi feels will have a unique atmosphere that’s more in tune with the times.

Until then, staff ask that guests come in for one more chili relleno and “juanitarita.”

Whole Foods delivers Colorado Chautauqua guests can now get Whole Foods groceries delivered even before they arrive at their room.

Whole Foods will work with guests to determine a shopping list and will deliver food Monday to Friday from 4 to 5 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m.

The delivery service is free during those times, and additional delivery times are available for a $10 charge.

For patients recovering from surgery, or elderly people who may not be able to make it out to the store, the delivery of a nutritional meal can be instrumental to maintaining overall health.

Sherman says one thing Zone Denver strives for is to teach customers how to eat better on their own by recognizing healthier foods and correct Boulder Weekly

proportions. After people have been successful with the program, he says, they generally have more motivation to be on their own.

“This day and age, I think most people know what’s healthy and what’s not, and how they should eat,” Sherman says. “If they don’t know specifically, they certainly have a good idea. It’s just a matter of, ‘Are you going to actually do this for yourself?’”

Top choices include the traditional Italian sub with its mix of pepperoni, Genoa salami, mortadella and provolone. Chicken salad is another fine entry, with a delicate herbal taste.
