uckle-up friends, it’s going to be a hairy ride.

Start with Day One for President Trump (gotta get used to saying that). He will need to be up-and-at-’em no later than 12:01 a.m., for he promised during his campaign to get oodles of big stuff done on his very first day in office, including: “Repeal Obamacare;” “Begin working

on impenetrable, physical, tall, powerful, beautiful, southern border wall;” Fix the Department of Veterans Affairs; “Repeal every single Obama executive order;” Suspend Syrian refugee resettlement; “Get rid of gun-free zones in schools;” “End the war on coal;” “Defend the unborn;” and convene top generals and inform them they have 30 days to come up with a plan to stop ISIS. Good grief! Americans have actually put a xenophobic-misogynous-racist-nativist-narcissistic blowhard in the Oval Office. Has our country gone right-wing? Or nuts?

No. Indeed, the majority actually voted for Hillary — Trump lost the popular vote, but won in the electoral college.

Also, even his own voters disagree with much of his agenda (especially his grandiose wall across the Mexican border). Trump was not elected on issues, but on anger — a deep seething fury

that the economic and political elite themselves have created by knocking down the working-class majority, then callously stepping over them as if they didn’t exist. Exit polls revealed that most Trump voters don’t think he’s any more honest than Hillary Clinton, only 38 percent of all voters had a favorable opinion of him, and only a third consider him qualified to be president.

But his core message — “The system is rigged” by and for the elites — came through loud and clear to them, so they grabbed him like a big BoisD’arc stick to whap the whole establishment upside its collective head.

danish plan Civil disobedience in Lafayette and North Dakota

T

he latest bright idea to emerge from Boulder County’s intrepid antifrackers is to get the City of Lafayette to legalize “nonviolent” civil disobedience and “direct action protests” that target oil and gas drilling.

According to a story in last Monday’s Daily Camera, such acts would include sit-ins, strikes and workplace occupations or blockades and would “allow protesters unprecedented immunity from arrest or detainment.”

“Our position is anything that interferes with our right to a healthy climate and any attempt to forcefully compel drilling on Lafayette citizens would be open to acts of civil disobedience,” said Cliff Willmeng, who organized the anti-fracking group East Boulder County United.

“What other option is there for people when their state government is in the pocket of the oil and gas industry?”, said Willmeng’s mom, Lafayette City Councilwoman Merrily Mazza.

Well, that will certainly fix the oil and gas industry’s clock. The second drillers set up a rig in Lafayette it will the swarmed by little green guardians of Lafayette’s earth, air, water and oatmeal, who’ll plant their butts all over the rig, and shut that baby down for days, weeks, months — whatever it takes — until the oil company comes, gets tired of losing thousands of dollars a day, lays off the dozens of locals working for it, and moves back to North Dakota; all with the full blessing of the Lafayette city government which wouldn’t lift a finger to stop them.

What could possibly go wrong?

Glad you asked.

Because back in North Dakota, oil and gas activists trying to block construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline are providing some enlightening examples of just what the term “non-violent,” means to today’s “direct action” eco-protesters.

During a Sept. 9 clash, four security officers and two guard dogs were hurt as several hundred protesters confronted construction workers at the site.

In October, demonstrators set fire to nine vehicles, destroyed construction equipment, and left debris and burned out vehicles strewn across a bridge on a 6 January 19, 2017

state highway, which has remained closed ever since.

Former North Dakota Governor Jack Dalrymple (who left office a few weeks ago) received so many threats on social media from latter-day Gandhis that the state patrol started accompanying him everywhere he went.

Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier, who has dealt with the protests for months, regularly gets similar threats.

Last Monday, three protesters were arrested during a 200-person protest near a fenced Dakota Access Pipeline drill pad and charged with criminal trespassing, inciting a riot and resisting arrest. They were accused of cutting a security fence, removing fencing material and dismantling lights that were being used to illuminate a bridge.

But hey, our local anti-fracking activists would never dream of doing stuff like that. Heavens no! And hell no! The very thought that they would leaves me ashamed and feeling dirty.

OK, here’s something else that could go wrong.

Getting government to let you break the law is a game two can play at.

On Monday, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reported that a North Dakota state legislator, Rep. Keith Kempenich (R-Bowman) is sponsoring a bill that protects drivers who “inadvertently” hit someone obstructing traffic at an antipipeline demonstration.

“A driver of a motor vehicle who unintentionally causes injury or death to an individual obstructing vehicular traffic on a public road, street, or highway is not guilty of an offense,” the bill reads.

Kempenich says he got the idea for the bill after his mother-in-law’s car was swarmed in an effort to block the road.

“If you stay off the roadway, this would never be an issue,” Kempenich told the Star Tribune. “Those motorists are going about the lawful, legal exercise of their rights to drive down the road.

Those people didn’t ask to be in this.

“This bill puts the onus on somebody who’s made a conscious decision to put themselves in harm’s way. You can protest all you want, but you can’t protest up on a roadway. It’s dangerous see DANISH PLAN Page 7

Former FBI agent asks Obama to free Leonard Peltier

In a letter dated Jan. 3, former agent and charter member of the Federal Bureau of Investigation Agents Association (FBIAA) John C. “Jack” Ryan wrote to President Obama to request a grant of clemency to Native American activist Leonard Peltier.

Leonard Peltier should receive clemency, Ryan said, “in the interest of the system of justice for which my two fellow agents died, and in the interest of reconciliation and compassion.”

In 1977, Peltier was sentenced to two consecutive life terms for the shooting deaths of FBI agents Jack Coler and Ron Williams on the Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota.

The circumstances surrounding the case in combination with the passage of four decades of time served support [Peltier’s] request to live his final years

at home. When Agents Coler and Williams lost their lives it was a devastating loss to us agents. Emotion ruled the decision-making process and likely clouded the judgment of the massive team of whom were driven to hold someone responsible for our loss, Ryan wrote. “If the government could do it all over again, it would respond differently. Through today’s lens, Leonard Peltier was not treated fairly and did not get a fair trial.”

In 2000, Congressman Don Edwards (also a former agent) stated: “The FBI continues to deny its improper conduct on Pine Ridge during the 1970s and in the trial of Leonard Peltier. The FBI used Mr. Peltier as a scapegoat and they continue to do so today. At every step of the way, FBI agents and leadership have opposed any admission of wrongdoing by the government, and they have sought to misrepresent and politicize the meaning of clemency for Leonard Peltier. The killing of FBI agents at Pine Ridge was reprehensible, but the government now admits that it cannot prove that Mr. Peltier killed the agents.”

Edwards’ words ring true today.

Last week, the FBIAA succeeded in pressuring American University to remove a statue of Peltier that was exhibited there, and when former U.S. Attorney James Reynolds’ letter to the president to request that he grant clemency to Peltier was publicized, some sought to discredit Reynolds stating that he falsely claimed involvement with the Peltier case.

public opinion and avoid self-reflection.

Mr. Peltier’s clemency petition is not a referendum on federal law enforcement; it presents a moral imperative which President Obama can address, said Peltier attorney Cynthia Dunne, herself a former federal prosecutor. By reckoning with the past and moving forward in the best interests of justice, reconciliation and compassion, we can become a stronger nation. It is time to free Leonard Peltier.

Currently imprisoned in a maximum-security facility in Coleman, Florida, Peltier is far away from his reservation in North Dakota.

Maintaining strong family ties has been difficult. He has never even met some of his grandchildren or greatgrandchildren. In December, Peltier’s younger son passed away while in Washington, D.C., advocating for his father’s release. Prison authorities refused to allow Peltier to attend his son’s funeral.

At 72 years old, Peltier suffers from serious medical problems that impair his ability to walk, see and conduct normal life activities. He suffers from severe diabetes, hypertension and a heart condition, and has been diagnosed with an abdominal aortic aneurysm. Recently, he was told he needs prostate surgery.

Imprisoned for 41 years, Peltier has long been eligible for release, but federal authorities have yielded to the objections of the FBI in denying Peltier’s applications for parole most recently in 2009 when he was told he will not

receive another full parole hearing until 2024 when, if he survives, he will have reached nearly the age of 80. Peltier says he’s eligible for mandatory release, but the government has failed to apply its 30-year rule (after 30 years served, all sentences are to be aggregated and the prisoner released) or consider the good-time credit he has earned (20 years, to date).

Peltier’s release from prison now depends on a grant of clemency by President Obama who leaves office on Jan. 20.

Who is John Galt?

With the election of Donald Trump we may finally have the answer to the cryptic question posed by Ayn Rand in her libertarian, utopian novel Atlas Shrugged, “Who is John Galt?” Scott Walker, Rand Paul and Paul Ryan are, no doubt, waiting breathlessly for the skies to open.

The problem with promises of unfettered, deregulated, laissez faire capitalist enterprise is that there has never been a period in American history when the forces of capital have acted over the long term to benefit the American worker or the public’s well being at large. Greed and ego are difficult things to overcome. Putting a good foot forward is an admiral concession to the reality of a Trump Presidency, but no one should not fall into the temptation of trying to put lipstick on a pig.

Needless to say, the protesters are horrified by the bill. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to see a scenario in which a roughneck trying to get to work is swarmed by a bunch of “nonviolent” protesters gently trying to overturn his truck and burn it, and who in a moment of panic “inadvertently” hits the gas instead of the break and “accidentally” mows down a few dozen of them.

“It’s shocking to see legislation that allows for people to literally be killed for exercising their right to protest in a public space,” said Tara Houska, an American Indian environmental activist who has been in the protest camp since August.

She’s got a point there, but it’s also shocking that Ms. Houska would claim a constitutional right to protest in the midBoulder Weekly

dle of a public highway by blocking it.

There is no such right. If you choose to protest that way, you do so with the expectation that you will be arrested and punished for your acts.

That’s the heart and soul of what civil disobedience is about, and the thing that gives it it’s moral authority.

If you’re not willing to accept the consequences of being civilly — civilly — disobedient, all you are just is a garden-variety miscreant committing a crime and trying to get away with it.

Unlike Houska, Willmeng seems to recognize that there is no constitutional right to stage sit-ins, workplace occupations, and blockades that violate other people’s rights. That’s why he wants the City of Lafayette to give him a pass in advance.

t is Dec. 7, 2015. We’re in Sagamihara, Japan, a little southwest of Tokyo. On a clear day like today, you can just make out the silhouette of Mount Fuji in the distance. We are standing outside of the control room of the Japanese Aerospace eXploration Agency ( JAXA), watching as a spacecraft named Akatsuki is preparing for its arrival at Venus.

Success here means the beginning of a promising collaboration between JAXA and NASA scientists — mostly between JAXA and Boulder scientists, since four of the eight scientists chosen

by NASA to work with the Japanese on this ground-breaking mission are based in Boulder. The team includes myself, along with Mark Bullock, Kandis Lea Jessup and Eliot Young, all from the Southwest Research Institute.

“That chart on the far screen shows the speed of the spacecraft relative to the Earth,” says Takehiko Satoh, current project scientist of the mission. “If the pointer reaches at least 80 percent of the target, that means we have made it into orbit.”

An announcement is made. The pointer begins to climb. The tune from the Mountain Climber game in The Price is Right pops into my head. You know, the game where the little pickaxwielding mountain climber ascends one step for every dollar you’ve missed the

target price by. If you miss by too much, the little climber hikes past the summit and falls to his death. This time, I do not want to hear the music stop. I’m rooting for the little climber to make it all the way to the top.

Everyone in the control room looks very nervous. This is not surprising, they have all been here before. Five years ago to the day, in fact, when things did not go very well at all.

On Dec. 7, 2010, we were following the proceedings via Twitter from 6,000 miles away. The Akatsuki Twitter feed had announced the successful start of the orbit insertion burn. The time for the end of the burn came and went, but no new information was released.

Hours went by in tweetless silence.

Akatsuki’s faint signal was finally detected, but all was not well. Akatsuki was spinning in an orientation that it was programmed to assume when problems are detected, a condition called “safe mode.”

zle. The nozzle soon cracked, which caused the spacecraft to spin like a garden sprinkler. The spacecraft computer recognized that this was a “bad thing” and stopped the burn before things got even worse. This quick reaction saved the spacecraft, but it meant that Akatsuki would not be captured into orbit. Venus was quickly fading in the rear-view mirror.

“The orbit insertion failure was shocking and sad, but there was a thin sliver of hope,” says Ralph Lorenz of the Applied Physics Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. “Having followed spacecraft systems failures closely over the years, I knew that JAXA has been tenacious and ingenious in devising recoveries from failures.”

The engineers discovered that Akatsuki would, after orbiting the Sun for five years in lonely silence, come close enough to Venus to try to enter orbit again. How can that be helpful, since the main rocket engine had been destroyed? In addition to the main rocket, spacecraft also carry several lowthrust rockets for fine adjustments in control and pointing. These were still operational. However, they were never intended to be fired as long as would be necessary to get into orbit.

No spacecraft had ever attempted to achieve orbit in this way before. Why would it? It would be like fighting a house fire with a garden hose instead of the high pressure water from a hydrant.

But on Dec. 7, 2015, because Akatsuki’s hydrant is broken, that is essentially what’s being attempted in a last-ditch effort to help the spacecraft achieve its goals.

Akatsuki’s primary goal is to explain why the atmosphere of Venus whirls around the planet at speeds approaching those of the Shinkansen “bullet trains” for which Japan is famous. A Boulder Weekly

By taking pictures of Venus at several different wavelengths from the ultraviolet to the infrared, Akatsuki can measure winds at different altitudes by tracking how cloud features move in the images. If they can explain the workings of an atmosphere as unusual as Venus — especially with regard to greenhouse warming and the effects of clouds on planetary temperature — the Akatsuki team hopes also to better understand our own atmosphere.

Back in the control room, things are going well. The curve climbs with agonizing slowness to 80 percent and beyond, actually reaching 105 percent before the rockets stopped. There is brief applause and a few handshakes after the program manager formally announces that the burn was executed successfully and Akatsuki is in orbit.

Then everyone quickly and dutifully returns to their work.

Akatsuki has now been in orbit for more than a year, and a new chapter in history is being written by this successful American-Japanese scientific collaboration. Investigators on both sides of the Pacific now pore over the images, yearning to understand what they can, to help us learn about the unusual atmosphere of Venus.

Community braces for controversial speaker Milo Yiannopoulos

F

eminism and Islam, The Unholy Alliance.” “Why Do Lesbians Fake So Many Hate Crimes?” “Fat Shaming Works.” These are a few of the speeches given by journalist and senior editor for Breitbart News, Milo Yiannopoulos, on his nationwide college speaking tour.

On Jan. 25, Yiannopoulos is scheduled to speak at University of Colorado Boulder, leaving many at CU and around town anxious as to what inflammatory remarks he’ll make about transgender people, Muslims and/or members of what he calls the “regressive left.”

In response, a group of CU students and staff have organized an alternative event called “BuffsUnited,” followed by a talk later that evening from transgender actress Laverne Cox (one of the stars of Orange is the New Black), while others are working to get Yiannopoulos’ talk canceled.

A 33-year old openly gay, Catholic, British conservative of Jewish and Greek descent, Yiannopoulos is perhaps best known for being banned from Twitter in July following racially-charged insults directed at actress Leslie Jones, one of the stars of the reboot of the movie Ghostbusters.

[Yiannopoulos didn’t respond to several interview requests by Boulder Weekly. All quotes from Yiannopoulos are from YouTube videos of his campus speaking engagements.]

Considering himself an “eternal 14 year old” and a “virtuous troll” whose main focus is to ridicule liberals with often ornate and usually profane language, Yiannopoulos was an early and ardent supporter of President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign. His former boss at Breitbart News, Stephen Bannon, is now Trump’s chief strategist and senior counselor.

CU Boulder sophomore Nicolas Reinhardt is chapter president of Turning Point CU, the organization that invited Yiannopoulos, which is part of a national nonprofit dedicated 10 January 19, 2017

to fiscal responsibility, free markets and limited government, with chapters on over 300 college campuses.

Calling himself a moderate libertarian, Reinhardt points to the “high level of homogeny of the political ideology” at the mostly liberal CU, and says the purpose of inviting Yiannopoulos to campus is to “expose people to all perspectives so that ... when they decide what they really believe in, they’re tak-

ing into consideration all viewpoints, not just the one that they may hear in their daily lives.”

He agrees that Yiannopoulos can be contentious and admits that “a lot of the things that he says we don’t agree with,” though his “trolly nature” can make politics fun.

With over 1 million Facebook likes, over 400,000 YouTube subscribers, and a packed house at nearly all of his talks, it’s clear that Yiannopoulos appeals to a certain segment of the population.

In late December, 24 hours after the announcement of his book deal with Simon & Schuster, pre-orders of Dangerous launched it to No. 1 on Amazon.

In early January, Yiannopoulos was declared LGBTQ Nation’s 2016 “Person of the Year,” having won almost 70 percent of votes in an open poll. The publication alludes to an orchestrated campaign from his supporters that may have skewed results in his favor.

Of course, not everyone is amused

by Yiannopoulos, as shown by the many interruptions of his speaking events by members of the public who consider his statements to be both hateful and hurtful, especially to marginalized groups.

In May, two protesters interrupted his talk at DePaul University in Chicago by climbing on stage, snatching the microphone, chanting and blowing a whistle, resulting in the talk’s cancellation.

Reinhardt says he not only supports people’s right to question Yiannopoulos’ ideas, but welcomes the debate. However, he hopes that the opposition can “channel their passion in a way which will challenge Milo’s beliefs, instead of silencing them entirely.”

guage they don’t approve of or expressing opinions they disagree with.

He points to political correctness, “language policing,” safe spaces, and trigger warnings as tactics for shutting down free speech and, ultimately, opposing viewpoints. As he sees it, the election of Donald Trump is, in part, a backlash against those looking to impose free speech restrictions on others.

As an act of protest following the announcement of Yiannopoulos’ book deal, The Chicago Review of Books refuses to review the book, nor any other book published by Simon & Schuster in 2017.

Brittany Gutermuth, an intern with Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and a graduate student at Naropa, has worked for years on social justice issues, with a focus on fighting racism. What Yiannopoulos has to say is “really counterproductive to what I feel America needs right now,” she says.

However, while she thinks that it’s “good to oppose him and make that verbal,” she also acknowledges that some of the pushback, such as attempts to censor him, might be “making him more famous.”

Yet, Bowen says CU community members’ concerns about Yiannopoulos aren’t “a free speech issue so much as a campus safety issue.”

“When we prepare for him to be on campus, we’re not preparing just for him but for escalated levels of hostility that accompany people who come to his talks,” Bowen says. “We just wouldn’t want anyone protesting the event to get hurt in any way, physically or psychologically.”

“I don’t believe that he encourages hateful behavior,” Reinhardt counters.

“Some things aren’t easy to talk about, but we need to talk about them.

“For true ideological diversity, we need to be able to have civil conversations with each other and understand where we’re coming from. It’s hard to express your opinions to people who don’t want to listen to them.”

His progressive politics aside, Brady Itkin is sympathetic to the plight of more conservative students such as Reinhardt. “I know I’ve had Republican friends who’ve felt not only disenfranchised, but felt hated on just as much as the vast majority of my friends in the LGBT community.”

Like Reinhardt, Itkin believes the way forward is through dialogue.

However, Itkin also thinks Yiannopoulos is a “nonstarter to that conversation.”

Mardi Moore, executive director of Out Boulder agrees with Itkin’s assessment of Yiannopoulos. “I think he’s using it for shock value. He’s not reclaiming a word.”

Scarlet Bowen, director of CU’s Gender and Sexuality Center, also doesn’t think Yiannopoulos is advancing the LGBTQ cause, bringing up his remarks about transgender people being mentally ill. “I think that qualifies as hate speech,” she says.

In a December talk at the university of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Yiannopoulos showed a slide of and derided a transgender student who had recently been featured in the Media Milwaukee school newspaper for filing a complaint against the school after being asked to leave the women’s locker room.

Following the incident, the individual reportedly quit school, according to the LGBT online newspaper Pink News.

It’s not just Yiannopoulos’ comments about transgender people that bother Bowen. “Pretty much any member of any protected class that the University covers in its policies against discrimination and harassment, Milo Yiannopoulos has something negative to say about them,” she says.

Few will disagree that what Yiannopoulos has to say can be disrespectful, unkind and even cruel at times, though whether his remarks qualify as hate speech may be up to interpretation. But if it is hate speech, is it against the law?

“In the United States there is no legal category for hate speech,” says Robert F. Nagel, Rothgerber Professor of Constitutional Law at CU (now retired) and visiting fellow in the James Madison Program at Princeton University.

“That means that what is commonly referred to as hate speech is in fact speech that is protected by the First Amendment,” he says. “It is, of course, a complicated question to determine what sort of speech should be considered appropriate on universities’ campuses, but people who think that issue can easily be resolved — by excluding ‘hate speech’ because it is legally unprotected — are operating from an inaccurate view of the law.”

One of Yiannopoulos’ main talking points is that members of the left, particularly “social justice warriors” and modern feminists, are trying to censor him, as well as anyone else using lan-

Willmeng also said that he has led three filled-tocapacity civil disobedience trainings in the past month with 40-plus people in each session. These trainings have been hosted on a volunteer basis by local businesses in Lafayette and Longmont. More trainings are being planned. Willmeng’s mother, Merrily Mazza, is a member of Lafayette City Council and supports the legalization of direct action to empower her constituents to protect their community and environment from fracking.

Other speakers at the meeting cited historical examples of peaceful civil disobedience as a critical legacy of the United States’ most significant fights for justice, including the abolition of slavery, women’s suffrage, African-American voting rights and LGBTQ equality. A Lakota man and veteran of the Iraq War, Doug Good Feather recounted the feeling of putting his hands in the air at the front lines of the movement at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation — where he grew up and returned to recently as a “water protector” protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline — only to be shot at with rubber bullets, concussion grenades and tear gas. He said that, as a United States Army combat veteran, he feels that the Iraq War is here now.

Opponents of the ordinance cast its supporters as “radicals” and “hypocrites” and claimed the ordinance would be a potential threat to business and the rule of law. A representative and attorney for COGA condemned the bill. Lafayette City Attorney David Williamson suggested earlier this month that much of the bill’s language was “unenforceable” due to state law.

Towards the end of the evening, John Lamb, a retired Boulder Valley School District teacher and musician from Lafayette, pulled out his harmonica and played the working class ballad, “Which Side Are You On?” He was joined by several women singing along with lyrics specific to Lafayette. Many in the audience joined in. Three of the four councilmembers acknowledged it was a moving moment.

Hanging onto hope

Growing up, Salam says, the family was close and has grown even closer as the conflict has dispersed them throughout the world. But he does hope to one day be reunited with them all, although he doesn’t expect it to happen anytime soon.

“All I have are hopes, I don’t have any expectations,” he says. “Our expectations failed us many times since the beginning of the conflict. We expected the war to be over in a year or so and we would gain our freedom. But we failed in that. We expected Assad to be overthrown by the opposition forces but we again failed at that.”

Originally from southern Aleppo, his family is now spread across the globe as a result of the Syrian Civil War, and with a pending asylum case in the U.S., he doesn’t know the next time he’ll be able to see anyone in his family face to face.

“We all know that the Syrian regime is really bad; that’s the basic level of agreement between us as family members,” Salam says. “We all agree on that, and we all want Assad to go.”

“My life was just perfect,” she says. “Successful in my career, already finished my study, social life, hiking, camping, clubbing and also I was a volunteer in the Red Cross.”

Before the war, she was a manager at an international tourism company and speaks with pride about both her home city of Aleppo and her country.

“My mission was showing the tourists the beauty, the history, the music, the cuisine and the culture of Syria,” she says. “That’s why I know Syria like the back of my hand.”

But she wasn’t politically involved and didn’t have a problem with the Assad regime, until she started hearing reports from other cities around the country.

Then her humanitarian work caught up with her and intelligence agencies asked to bring her in for investigation.

“I didn’t respond, and after two months of maneuvering I decided to flee to Turkey,” she says. “I am Boulder Weekly

realistic person and I understand that sometimes you relocate to another country either for work or marriage or whatever, but that would be your choice.”

But her decision to leave Syria was different, a necessary step to continue both her life and her career in relative peace.

“It’s a test for your strength, for your patience, for your manners and principles,” she says. “Many others failed in this test and I saw them falling down, while I continue my path.”

Amira first went to Turkish relatives in Hatay Province, west of Aleppo, before moving to Istanbul where it was easier to find a job. The first year was like “living in hell,” she says, as she struggled to adapt to the new place and often encountered people looking to profit off the vulnerable refugees. But she stood her ground and has since worked in multiple fields, from tourism to real estate, even acting in some commercials and in a movie with a Turkish director.

“I guess I teached them how to deal with me as human being, not as a Syrian refugee,” she says.

Now she loves living in Istanbul, comparing it to busy metropolitan cities like New York or London, aware of the beauty diversity brings, something she learned as a young girl in Aleppo.

“I remember that in my grandmother’s building there were four religions, every neighbour is different of the other. On Fridays sometimes they go up to the roof to make BBQ together,” she says. “I can keep the memories from my childhood in my heart, understanding that it was such beautiful days.”

In Turkey, she continues with her humanitarian work, helping Syrian women find jobs and Syrian children gain access to education. And she’s become part of an expat community, helping to organize dinners, parties and lectures. On weekends she enjoys gardening and cooking for friends. “I am trying hard to live as a normal human,” she says. But everywhere she turns, on TV, the radio, in conversation, she sees Syria. “Even when I go dating, the basic topic will be Syria while we should [be getting to] know each other.”

Amira worked tirelessly to gain residency and work authorization. It was a hard fight, she says, and now she wants to help other people achieve the same.

But while her brothers eventually followed her to Turkey, they all found it much more difficult to settle down and build a life there.

Salam was fulfilling mandatory military service as the conflict began in 2011. But as the fighting increased and he witnessed many atrocities committed by the Assad regime, he defected, fleeing to Turkey in 2012.

“It’s a pretty decisive decision when a refugee makes it to leave,” Salam says. “For me, I made the right decision in the right moment and luck was on my side. Many refugees faced even more dangerous situations than mine, I’m very sure of that.”

For Salam, specifically defecting from the military also exiled him from Syria as long as Assad remains in power.

“I thought, in a year or so, the war would be over, Assad would be overthrown and we could move on,” Salam says. “I was wrong.”

Salam says the West often oversimplifies the conflict, pitting the government against ISIS and other terrorists, when in reality it’s much more complicated.

What started as a citizens’ movement to gain basic rights and freedoms has dissolved into a messy civil war with numerous factions vying for power.

“You have the government, with all its affiliated Boulder Weekly

militias from Iraq, Iran and other places. You have the Free Syrian Army, which is a big umbrella of small groups, sometimes fighting each other, sometimes uniting together; some of them are affiliated with Al Qaeda, some of them are not; some of them are anti-America, some of them are not,” he says. “You have ISIS as well, and you have the Kurds who want autonomy.”

When Salam first arrived in Turkey, he says he had “second thoughts” about leaving his home, and even considered returning to fight with the opposition. But he decided to stay in Turkey, learn the language and settle down.

However, he became increasingly afraid of the building anti-refugee sentiment, even changing the Arabic license plate on his car to blend in with Turkish cars, which use Latin numbers.

“It’s a kind of camouflage because with the Arabic numerical system, an angry mob could see the car and just smash it,” he says.

While Salam and Amira struggled to begin a new life, they were soon joined by their youngest brother Amro, although he stayed in Hatay Province with relatives.

“I finally accepted the ugly truth and cried and cried like never before,” Amro says about deciding to leave his home. He was just 18 when the revolution started in 2011.

“It was my final year in high school, the year that defines my fate,” he says. “I was so active with the opposition because as any other honored Syrian, I couldn’t bear the injustice.”

He was accepted to the economics department at the University of Aleppo, but as the conflict increased, he decided to delay his studies and instead work with the opposition, traveling throughout the country as a translator for foreign journalists and working with humanitarian efforts.

“In that time, I was deluded that this crisis was going to end very soon,” he says. “So I held my camera instead of my study books.”

In less than a year, Amro was arrested twice. Both times he was held in what he calls “concentration camps” before being sent to prison. He describes living with up to 70 other men in a room, eating out of communal “buckets,” sometimes hardly having sufficient air to breathe. “It is just amazing how the human nature adapts to the bad conditions for the sake of survival,” he says.

After paying a bribe, he was released for the second time, which is when he decided to join his siblings in Turkey.

He spent a year learning Turkish and applying to universities, while also working up to 12 hours a day.

Although he was accepted into a civil engineering program, the workload in a foreign language while trying to make ends meet was too much for him to bear.

Hoping his chances would be better in Germany, he joined his best friend on the journey from Turkey to Germany, traveling through Greece, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary and Austria on the way.

“Today I am very proud of my choice after one year living in Germany,” he says. “I learned a lot from the Germans, although they are barely social.”

He says that for the most part, the Germans he’s encountered are friendly and welcoming, but hesitant to become friends after learning he’s a refugee from Syria. And although he saw “Nazis’ demonstrating against refugees” every few weeks while living in Western Germany, he hasn’t experienced much resentment in his new home of Berlin.

“I think Germany will adapt soon to the idea of hosting refugees at the same time refugees adapt in their new temporary home,” Amro says.

Amro applied for asylum and was granted a threeyear residency permit before the immigration laws changed in Germany. Now, he says, refugees must stay in the same state for three years before being granted temporary protection for one year.

He immediately began learning German, translating for friends after a month and finishing the nine month mandatory integration language course in two and a half months. But starting school has proved difficult, and he recently moved from Dortmund to Berlin, hoping his chances will be better.

“I got a lot of depression due to it because no one helped me or guided me and in the end no one understood my circumstances,” he says.

It’s been five years since he graduated high school, a significant delay in his studies, but he’s “still happy and dedicated to learn and work more than ever,” he says.

“I cry sometimes when I watch the news, especially in my home city Aleppo,” Amro says. “But I still feel optimistic to the future of Syria.”

And living in Berlin has actually given him even more hope for eventual recovery in Syria, comparing Aleppo today to the Berlin of World War II: “The amount of killing and the same bad conditions innocent people had to live,” he says, believing that his city will be able to recover after the war, like Berlin has.

“I lately realised that [to fix] an unstable house, a man have to destroy it and rebuild it from the beginning,” he says. “I also realised that people don’t learn how to change themselves and love each other except when their life is on the line.”

Amro hopes to soon be joined by his brother Besher, who is trying to make his way from refugee camps in Lesbos, Greece, to join him. Besher was the last of Salam’s siblings to leave Syria and in many ways has had the most difficult time trying to build a new life. Left with a minor disability in his arm and prone to epileptic seizures after being struck by a car while walking in 2012, Besher is exempt from Syria’s mandatory military conscription. Yet he became increasingly aware that there was no future for him in Aleppo as the war wages on.

Leaving home in 2014 and following his siblings’ path to Turkey, Besher has always dreamed of becoming a successful painter and he hopes to one day make it to Germany in order to attend art school.

“The first time I stepped outside Syria, I knew that if I did, it means I will never go back,” Besher says. “Until 2011, I never would imagine something would happen to my country like what happened.”

But Turkey wasn’t easy for Besher, as increasing anti-refugee sentiments have led to more hate crimes, violence and uncertainty.

“It was a strange country. I don’t know anything about its culture and the life over there is too hard,” he says. Syrians are treated like second-class citizens, he says, taken advantage of in their desperation, often being offered lower wages than Turkish citizens.

So he decided to join Amro in Germany, hoping for more opportunity. He traveled by boat from Turkey to Lesbos, and is now stuck in a refugee camp on the island as he waits for his paperwork to go through. camps, where fires have become increasingly more common, he’s witnessed fights between Afghans and Syrians and he recently spent some time in a hospital following a seizure.

But he just has to keep moving forward, he says, knowing that even though his parents remain in Aleppo, there’s no point in thinking about going back.

“For me and most of Syrians, we expect to get better future outside of Syria,” Besher says. “It’s impossible to go back just for our parents, for our mom and dad.”

Back in southern Aleppo, their parents have watched as their neighborhood has been bombed by opposition forces and entire families have been killed. They haven’t had consistent water for months, relying on storage receptacles to function.

Nor have they had access to any formal electricity. “The neighborhood [is] set up that each family pays a subscription fee informally,” Salam says. “They just extend one cable or wire and connect it to the house. They have enough to power their refrigerator and TV. The voltage is not that high, the voltage or that wattage I’m not sure. I’m not an electrician.”

Both their parents are state employees — their father, a retired state journalist, still depends on his government pension despite continued currency devaluation.

Their mother still works for a state pharmaceutical company but hasn’t been to her office in years, Salam says. Rather, she logs in remotely from an office building near their home. Although they may not agree with the Assad regime, they depend on it for their survival. Plus, they still manage family lands in Idlib Province, roughly 40 miles south of the city.

As a boy, Salam remembers going out to the village during olive harvesting in October, helping his father take the produce to the factory to make oil.

“I come from a rural background, my father and grandfather were all peasants.

We have olive trees, grapes, peaches... ” he says. “My dad is attached to this land, he still cultivates it, so they can’t just turn their backs on it and get out of the country.”

Their mom hid the news of their dad’s imprisonment for a couple months, Salam says, and the siblings only found out a week before his release. Apparently someone, it’s still unclear to the family who, wrote a negative report about their dad.

“In Syria, since the 1980s, if anyone writes a report on you they come and arrest you, [even] torture you if it’s really bad, and they don’t really investigate into the matter,” Salam says. “If someone does it for spite it doesn’t matter, it’s just a report.”

His dad wasn’t tortured he says, and his mom was able to visit him twice. This is the second time his dad had been imprisoned, the first time for a month after Salam left. He wasn’t tortured that time either, although he went through several rounds of interrogation as the authorities asked him where Salam had gone.

“All they want is the war to be over, that’s their most desired wish,” Salam says of his parents.

Talking about Aleppo saddens Salam. He knows its deep history, its rich culture.

“It was a really beautiful city,” he says, referring to it as “Aleppo the White” due to the glistening marble that made up the old part of the city. He says he often cries looking at videos and images of the destruction. But in the end, the buildings aren’t what really concerns him. “What’s more important than rebuilding those edifices in Aleppo is rebuilding the social makeup between people,” Salam says.

“We don’t trust each other anymore. Syria, in its multi-ethnic and religious makeup, has fallen apart.”

In the midst of finishing his graduate degree at CU Boulder, Salam is also waiting to be interviewed for his asylum case. While the application is pending, he can’t leave the country, even to visit his family. And as long as Assad remains in power, he can’t go back to Syria.

But he has a temporary protective status in the U.S., while waiting for a green card. He has work authorization and he’s started to build his new life in Boulder, working, buying a car and saving money.

He’s able to keep in touch with his family using WhatsApp or social media, contacting them pretty much anytime he wants to. But it’s not the same.

Despite everything the family has faced and continues to walk through, he does believe he’ll be reunited with them again, and maybe even, one day, in Aleppo.

“Without hope, life makes no sense,” Salam concludes. “I have hopes in all directions, but the hard part is separating your hopes from your expectations. I don’t have really great expectations for the future, but I have hopes.”

Opening doors Blue Star and Eco-Cycle team up to employ adults with autism

here’s a new set of doors cut into the side of the Eco-Cycle warehouse in Boulder, the region’s most comprehensive center for hard-to-recycle materials. Through the entryway is a unique new partnership that’s about much more than just recycling.

The automatic double doors glide open into a redesigned section of the warehouse where the nonprofit Blue Star Recyclers has its new home — a reception desk, a large table hung with pneumatic screwdrivers for “de-manufacturing” electronics, dozens of large boxes for sorting components, even a break room made completely from recycled materials (a welcome gift from Eco-Cycle). Since last October, this has been Blue Star’s third and newest location, after Colorado Springs and Denver. Since opening here, the small team has been taking a stream of e-waste — old computers, laptops, TVs and other electronics — through its doors and off consumers’ hands, to be taken apart and recycled.

“Something you’ve gotta learn here is multitask-

ing,” says Alex Dance, a Blue Star recycling tech, recounting a recent rush of electronics to process.

“The Eco-Cycle guys got pizza for us and we had customers lined up. I was eating pizza with one hand, working the cash register with the other. I’m pretty sure there was a third hand doing something else.”

Although consumers have to pay to have their e-waste recycled, there’s more than one good reason to do it here. First, it’s illegal to toss old electronics in the trash, because they leach harmful toxins into the ground and water supply if left in landfills. On top of that, it reduces the need for electronics manufacturers to use virgin resources to make new products. And with Blue Star at Eco-Cycle, both of which are certified and independently audited ethical recyclers, consumers can be sure their electronics are safely and completely recycled, which isn’t always the case in this still largely unregulated industry.

And for Boulder’s larger institutions, EcoCycle’s hard-to-recycle-materials manager, Dan

There’s another reason, too: Choosing Blue Star gives secure, well-paid jobs to a skilled workforce that struggles with abysmal employment rates.

programs like talking to a boss or packing a lunch. But they just don’t get hired.

“If no one will hire them, all those skills atrophy when they go home.

Employers don’t want to give them a shot,” Morris says. “We started Blue Star to intentionally employ that workforce.

“We don’t hire them out of pity,” he adds. “We hire them because they’re the best workers.”

Blue Star now has around 40 employees, including a team of four in Boulder, who’ve together recycled nearly 11.5 million pounds of electronics since the organization’s inception in 2008. Last year Blue Star brought in around $1.3 million in revenue with an operating budget of $1.5 million, covering the $200,000 shortfall through a handful of donations and foundation support.

All around, the nonprofit is thriving and growing. If there’s any difficulty to employing people with Christi Turner autism, Morris says, it’s that it can take people a longer time to fully get the hang of their work — but once they’re up to speed they get better and better, he says. The real challenge is that Blue Star has had almost no turnover and no absenteeism in eight years; Morris has had to drastically modify his original business plan, which predicted just a 20 percent retention rate.

“People here don’t get hurt, they don’t miss work and they’re super productive,” Morris says.

Blue Star Dance and his colleagues seem to embody what Morris founder Bill Morris at the emphasizes about his Blue Star recycle techs: They truly Denver faciltiy. enjoy what they do.

“I love it. We get paid to destroy stuff,” Dance says, wearing a Blue Star hoodie and holding a pneumatic screwdriver. “Honestly, I don’t know how many people can say that at the age of 24 they have a job where they want to go to work.”

Vinny Eide, in a camouflage jacket, baseball hat and safety glasses, agrees.

“I’d say the same thing along those lines. Most people don’t get to say they love going to work,” he says. “Except my dad — he works at Oracle. He makes the things we take apart.”

Eide goes on to explain how difficult it is to disassemble a Mac Book, holding one in his hands: “These are the most pain-in-the-butt computers to take apart. I somehow got this panel off but I don’t know how I’m going to get the other panel off. It’s riveted.”

Dance playfully chides Eide to wrap up his interview, motioning to the growing pile of laptops on the pallet marked “Vinny.” Everyone here at Blue Star has a goal: to de-manufacture at least 16 computers, or the equivalent, in one shift. That’s how the organization breaks even and it keeps the workforce motivated.

“They really love to know what success is,” Morris says. “And when these guys are working, the taxpayer saves $18.29 an hour. Since they’re eligible for benefits, if they sit home they’ll get a check just to sit home. When they work, their earned income displaces the benefit income by about two to one. Taxpayers get a break, and they’d much rather come to work than sit home. We’ve got a workforce that is phenomenal.”

With the Eco-Cycle collaboration in Boulder in place, Morris is working to bring Blue Star into more cities around Colorado and beyond. His goal remains the same: to create good, lasting job opportunities for people with autism, providing the community with local, environmentally sustainable electronics recycling in the process.

“I don’t want to be the world’s best recycler,” he says. “I just want to be the world’s best employer of this workforce.”

bout 90 miles offshore from São Paulo, Brazil, a mile-long mountain ridge pokes out from the Atlantic Ocean. Between 2,000 and 4,000 golden lancehead vipers roam the land, which, according to the Discovery Channel, means a person is never more than 3 feet away from one of these deadly creatures at any given point on the island. A single bite can cause kidney failure, intestinal bleeding, necrosis of muscular tissue, brain hemorrhaging and, ultimately, death.

Over the past two years, Mehgan Heaney-Grier has assisted two major expeditions to the uninhabited sliver of land, which the locals call Snake Island. As part of the Discovery Channel TV show Treasure Quest: Snake Island, Heaney-Grier leads a team through technical dives and operations as they search for a legendary Incan treasure.

The 39-year-old ocean adventurer grew up in the Florida Keys, but now lives in Boulder County with her husband, son and stepdaughter.

“Really I’m an ocean baby, and I miss the ocean,” she says, and as such, she tries to split her time as much as possible between the Rocky Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean.

“I fell in love with the feeling of being down there — how it makes your mind and body feel,” she says. “It’s really, really quiet, but there’s a sound that goes with it. You just hear the hum of the ocean. It’s almost like a kid plugging their ears. ... You get to go inside your own mind. It ends up like a physical feeling: the squeeze of the deep blue, the biggest comforting bear hug. You can literally enter ‘inner space’ with all the silence you have, and you can feel your heart beating and you can almost hear it. It’s [here] where you get to go inside [your mind] and internalize things. It’s my meditation, a spiritual experience.”

She cemented her diving excellence by assembling and captaining the first U.S. team to attend the World Cup Free Diving Championships in Sardinia, Italy, in 1998. But then Heaney-Grier began to expand the ways in which she could use diving.

She partnered with Animal Planet to produce Extreme Contact, a TV series that showcased interactions and encounters with sharks and animals in ocean wildlife.

From there she executive produced and starred in Deep Diver: Tiger Shark Odyssey, which eventually led to stunt diving for movies like Pirates of the Caribbean, Into the Blue and Touristas.

“Meanwhile, I also was incorporating modeling into my underwater work. I was keeping plenty busy, and feeling lucky to be able to do freediving for work,” she says. “I loved doing it, and it was something that I was good at, and could continue to excel at.”

Heaney-Grier enrolled at University of Colorado Boulder in 2007, studying Boulder Weekly

ADVENTURE evolutionary biology, ecology and anthropology. Now with her expedition gig on the Discovery Channel, she’s been incorporating her studies into her dive work.

“I definitely see everything through the lens of a marine conservationist,” she says. “I feel like a life-long conservationist having grown up [on the water] and seeing how things have changed over the years. ... My studies and projects have gained me a wonderful understanding of how you fit in the system, how things are connected, how valuable everyone’s decisions are, and how each person can make an impact, even if it’s small. When it’s all added together, it can make a big impact.”

Heaney-Grier has also teamed up with several conservation organizations.

“Everything I do has that end game in mind — always working towards spreading the message and [making people think about] how we are connected, and how there’s so much beautiful wild adventure. It’s so important that we together make decisions that support and keep [the world] wild and green and blue and healthy. ... [I’m] trying to keep the hope alive in myself, and talk with other people about it all and really trying to share experiences and connect with people. The best way to learn is from each other. More than anything I like to focus on trying to be a part of the solution.”

On the Discovery Channel show, Heaney-Grier is the only woman on the fiveperson expedition team.

“I’ve worked in male-dominated fields for a long time,” she reflects. “I’ve become really accustomed to being the only woman on expeditions like this, so it doesn’t stand out for me when I’m there ... just another day at the office.

“The only time when I ran into a strange situation [as the only female] was on Snake Island. We were out there for days, and it’s hot and everyone is working hard, so when you finally stop to take a break, everybody uses the bathroom. And going to the bathroom on an island covered in pit vipers is a little tricky when going alone.”

After such varied professional roles, “One of the biggest things I’ve learned is how to hone my skill set to deal with and diminish any fears,” Heaney-Grier explains. “Biologically speaking, we all have a built-in ‘flight or fight’ [instinct] that keeps us alive. ... But there are ways that it can be debilitating too.”

It may come as no surprise that people often ask Heaney-Grier if she ever gets scared, or, more bluntly, if she’s crazy.

“Trying to navigate around fear and take it by the reigns is one of the biggest things that’s been instrumental over the course of my career,” she says. “Having control to deal with fears and situations has definitely kept me alive and saved my hide throughout my career. When you’re in a situation that’s life threatening, and you aren’t in the moment because your mind is wrapped up in fear and not thinking rationally, dialing down the fear can keep you better focused on what’s at hand.”

Heaney-Grier acknowledges that fear is restrictive in all facets of life, “even in real life.”

“It holds us back from important conversations,” she says. “There’s such a disconnect between people when conversations aren’t happening, and that can be rooted in fear. Honestly, I’m more conformable underwater with sharks and alligators, navigating and trying to survive than having interactions and political conversations.

“But at the end of the day, I do love connecting with people. Going to the edge of your comfort zone is how you grow, and change, and take on new experiences.

You just have to jump and see how you’re going to handle [a scary situation]. And that’s what I’ve been doing throughout my life and career, in some of the most dangerous and life threatening situations. I work well, literally and figuratively, under pressure.”

Heaney-Grier’s upcoming year will continue to deepen and expand her diving world.

“I have a lot of different irons in the fire, and a few adventures on the burner that I can’t talk a whole lot about now. ... But things are going well in the adventure and travel department. I’m really looking forward to my son pushing 4 [years old] this year because I love sharing the adventure with him, and my stepdaughter as well, and the ocean.”

In balancing her work and family, and being landlocked in Colorado, she says, “Find what drives you and tap into that. It’s important for your happiness, and those that love and depend on you, to be happy and to wake up and be in the life you are living. For me, really figuring that out was a big deal and going back to my adventuring and knowing that that’s a driving force for me is my touch stone for everything, that wonder and being able to be out there and see what happens next.”

E

lection night was rough for many citizens around the country. Boulder resident Charlie Stein swung from disbelief to shock to sadness. In the aftermath, those feelings were hard to shake, and Stein felt he needed an outlet.

“I can’t do what I normally do, which is just to keep them inside and deal with them myself,” he says. “And so I thought, ‘What do I do now, as a response?’”

One day, post-election, when chatting with a friend, Stein said he hoped there would be reactionary events surrounding Inauguration Day in Boulder. Though the friend was positive there would be, Stein wasn’t so sure.

“In that moment I thought maybe our community could be together on that night,” he says. “To be together and to celebrate, not to just let events of life — which change all the time, it’s not just the election — keep us down.”

Initially, Stein thought he’d throw a party at his house, but as interest grew the party turned into the People’s Inaugural Ball at the Boulder Theater. On Jan. 20, the lineup features the Hazel Miller Band, Chris Daniels, Michael Hornbuckel, Lisa Watkins, DJ Matt Vorzimer the eCUSSIONIST, comedian Nancy Norton and more.

The People’s Inaugural Ball serves as an alternative to wallowing in the current political situation.

Event planning is fairly new for Stein, although he’s hosted some small events, including Boulder Dance Days on the library lawn. “A mini Boulder Creek Festival,” he calls it, before the Creek Fest existed. He’s lived in the city since he graduated from the University of Colorado in 1973, and has since focused on running InJoy, which educates parents on pregnancy and child rearing.

“So I’ve never booked the Boulder Theater before,” Stein says with a laugh.

“It’s a little nerve wracking, but I’ve gotten a lot of positive support.”

But the ball isn’t just about the election, it’s also meant to shed light on those around the community who are in need. Stein is partnering with a variety of local nonprofits and all proceeds from the ball will be divided among the organizations: Boulder County CareConnect, Boulder Food Rescue, Out Boulder County, Mental Health Partners, Boulder County AIDS Project, Voices For Children CASA, Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, Bridge House, Intercambio, Attention Homes, One Colorado, and Wildlands Restoration Volunteers.

Each charity will be at the ball, in an effort to not only receive financial donations but also to recruit new volunteers.

“There’s a lot of volunteer turnover but it’s a fresh year and here’s a fresh group of volunteers to help these folks succeed in their mission,” Stein says.

Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence is a human rights organization for domestic violence survivors that provides a 24-hour hotline, a safe shelter, legal advocacy, counseling, outreach education and children’s service for people affected by intimate partner violence.

With the upcoming political switch, Mary Pierce, with Safehouse’s development team, says they hope to help those who might become even more marginalized, including women and immigrants.

“We’ve been looking, since the day of the election, for ways to reach out into our community to educate people about social justice issues,” Pierce says. “[At the ball] I hope we can sign up some new volunteers and ignite some new passion for young people who are disenfranchised with what’s happening in our country today. ... It’s a great way for everyone to come together with solidarity.”

Stein’s daughter, Tirzah Stein, will also be at the ball with her organization Calling In For Racial Justice, which is a social media platform and campaign created to awake and engage people susceptible to white privilege. Tirzah was inspired to start Calling In after recognizing the amount of police brutality and racial inequality in the country.

“People of color are experiencing racism every day,” she says. “But the people who have the privilege in the society have more of the responsibility to dismantle that oppression and white supremacy that is a huge part of our country.”

This starts with opening a dialogue. Part of the organization’s outreach is a photo challenge Tirzah created where participants hold a whiteboard to exclaim they are against oppression, and gives them a chance to write in what they support: things like compassion, community, racial justice or speaking up.

She’ll be running a photo booth at the ball, encouraging people to open up and connect.

“These events are really important because they bring people together,” she says. “I think a lot of people don’t know what to do and they can feel overwhelmed. So being able to bring the community of Boulder together to say, ‘Hey, this is something you can do.’ ... That really is going to encourage that within people, to take action, not to stay silent or stay inside.”

When Stein first started this project he had no idea it would grow into what it has become. With little event planning background, he took it upon himself to create an outlet for people who are frustrated to take action.

While it’s been a learning curve for him, he’s realized the necessity to push past fear and move forward, ask for help when needed and to trust that good things will happen. All of which are lessons he wants others to take away from the ball.

“I hope this event spurs enough individuals to think about what they want to do next, whether it’s volunteering for a local organization or helping that organization be more successful or making their own organization,” he says. “Or them asking themselves, ‘What can I do? How can I help in this time in history?’”

And then there are the bombs: “Little Boy,” “Tsar” (short for the western nickname for the Soviet hydrogen bomb, Tsar Bomba) and “Fat Man.” Perhaps the most enigmatic track — title wise — is “Are You a Dancer?”, a title that may poke fun at the way Las Vegas capitalized on atomic bomb testing at the Nevada Test Site just 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas (think: “atomic cocktails” and “dawn bomb parties”).

Creating the soundtrack to Atomic was a logical progression for Mogwai; the band members have been prominent and vocal supporters of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament for some years now. They’ve visited Hiroshima and walked through the Peace Memorial Park there.

But these are guys known for their over-the-top support of the Celtic Football Club; the name of their band comes from an ’80s fantasy flick, for God’s sake.

The political nature of their most recent work comes from growing up.

“When we started the band in 1995 I was 18 years old and probably would be really excited about the possibility of someone giving us free beer,” Braithwaite says.

“To be honest, I think it still blows us away that people ask us to do those kinds of things [like Beyond the Flood and Atomic]. I think we’re very lucky that people are asking us to do these things.

We’re certainly not blasé about it.”

rossen Bart Brewery was established in July of 2012 by Shad Chancey and Taylor Wise. Shad had just moved to Colorado from Austin, Texas when he met Taylor at a Young Business Professionals MeetUp in Gunbarrel, Colorado. The two exchanged business cards and quickly became great friends. Both also shared a passion for craft beer, and after A LOT of “market research,” they decided to start their own brewery in an effort to ditch corporate America. eviant Spirits Distillery and Tasting Room was founded by three close friends in Boulder, Colorado. It started like most young businesses do; in the basement with a blowtorch. Our first operating still was a true blend of tradition and budget inspired ingenuity. Two years have been spent refining our product, doing much of the build-out of our tasting room ourselves, and doing everything we could to give birth to our baby. Now open for business at 2480 49th St., we specialize in unique infusions and craft cocktails in our tasting room. We make our vodka from scratch, using rice, specialized equipment, and lots of love. The store is fluorescent and almost empty.

My father is ailing in a nursing home, my friend is dying in the hospital.

What I want tonight is lipstick.

As pure a red as I can find—no coral undertones, no rust or fawn. Just red.

Ignoring the salespeople, I untwist tubes and scrawl each color on my wrist, till the blue veins beneath my skin disappear behind smeared bars. I select one.

Back in my mother’s apartment, silence.

I limn my lips back out of my wan face.

There they are again: smacky and wanting.

‘Live By Night’ should die in a fire

nless And They All Peed Together: The Donald Trump Story is written and filmed faster than a hot-mic whisper to Billy Bush, Live By Night should be the worst movie released in 2017. Arrogant to a fault, nonchalantly bigoted and flat-out boring as shit, Ben Affleck’s gangster odyssey is as bad as any film can possibly be. Having started his directorial career with three exceptional movies, Affleck’s “hold my beer” moment feels like he crammed four bad flicks into the space of one.

Although dissecting roadkill feels a bit serial killer-y, let’s split Live By Night into its four movies.

Movie one: Joe (Ben Affleck), who dresses like he’s cosplaying a Zoot Suit Riot, is a former WWI soldier. We discover this in the first of Affleck’s 6,342 voice overs.

His take-home message from the war wasn’t “killing is icky” but “I don’t wanna work for nobody.” So he takes to robbing banks and falls for a mob boss’s gal (Sienna Miller). When the boss finds out, he gets beat up and is only saved by his cop dad (Brendan Gleeson), who negotiates a deal to keep him in prison only briefly.

Movie two: Joe, who dresses in gaudy suspenders he insists on exposing in every goddamn scene, falls in with an Italian mobster who hires him to run bootlegging operations in Florida. There, he meets a nice lady (Zoe A gangster epic about a bootlegger that finds time to be gross about racism and women, nothing about the film is Saldana) and runs afoul of anything other than the absolute worst. the KKK. Gangsters have to square off against the Klan for supremacy of the state.

Movie three: Joe, who dresses in the most ridiculous series of fedoras ever fedora-ed, is the head of bootlegging in Florida. He becomes wary of the upcoming legalization of booze, so he begins trying to build a casino and legalize gambling. A former heroin addict (Elle Fanning) turns into a religious zealot and whips up the Christian community to defeat Joe’s gambling push.

Movie four: Joe, who dresses in a button-down shirt during a sex scene because Affleck (the director) yearns to conceal the saggy manflesh of Affleck (the actor), is ready to overthrow the shackles of “old world” gangsters with accents and establish a new, more decent American mafia. So he gets into a big shootout in a mansion.

Throughout all of the shitty movies that make up Live By Night, the constant is a horrifyingly crude depiction of women. Miller is “the whore.” Fanning is “the virgin.” And Saldana is “the mother.” It’s a misogyny trifecta! Affleck also positions white men as equal victims of KKK trauma, uses every antiquated racial slur ever invented (often one right after the other) and triumphantly brags about checking off two ethnicities on his “sexual conquest bingo” card at once.

Let no one call Live By Night unwatchable. Instead, let it be shown to every douchey, arrogant white filmmaker dude itching to ape Scorsese without putting in the work or possessing the talent. Let it be mandatory education for blockbuster actors relentlessly self-assured in their artistry. Let it be the cautionary tale of what happens to young directors drunk on the press of a fledgling filmography. Just don’t ever make me watch it again.

As you stare out the window, lost in Tickets start at $7.65. your thoughts, what thoughts are going through their mind? What movies have they seen, what books do they read, what music do they listen to? You pull the cord, saying, “Thank you” as you disembark and go on your way. But the bus driver rambles on. Up Broadway, down Arapahoe, across the Diagonal, people on and people off, all in a day’s work.

It may not be glamorous work, but there is poetry in the life of the bus driver.

You just have to find it and that is where writer/director Jim Jarmusch excels. One of the longstanding mavericks of the American independent scene, Jarmusch is a master of the quotidian and when he is on his game, his highly personal forms of observation are unmatched.

And his latest film — about a poetry-writing, Paterson, New Jersey, bus driver named Paterson — is one of his best to date and the best movie of 2016.

The film is broken up into eight days, each one starting with Paterson (Adam Driver: always good, never better) rising from his bed. We see him as he eats Paterson is the latest from writer/director Jim Jarmusch breakfast and makes coffee and stars the never-better Adam Driver with Golshifteh Farahani. for him and his wife, Laura (Golshifteh Farahani), walks to work, jots down a few lines of poetry before starting his shift, drives the number 23 bus through the crowded but unhurried streets of New Jersey, has lunch beside the Passaic River, jots down a few more lines before quitting time, has dinner with Laura, takes Marvin — their stately English Bulldog — for his evening walk, and stops by the neighborhood bar for a beer and a chat with Doc (Barry Shabaka Henley) about who is the most popular Paterson native: Lou Costello or Fetty Wap. As each day closes, a new one begins. Each one rhymes with the previous, but there are variations on a theme. One morning Laura awakes and tells Paterson that she dreamt they had twins, one for each of them. Paterson chuckles at the idea, but begins to notice twins everywhere he goes. Paterson himself is a twin, of the city he resides in, the bus he drives and the hobby he practices. His hero is William Carlos Williams, also a poet from the same town. There must be something in that Pessiac water.

Paterson is a delight. Few movies are this comfortable inside their own skin, and fewer still make you feel the same way. Jarmusch achieves this through ease and grace, the kind that comes not from conflict or strife, but from contemplation and appreciation. Movies make me homesick for places I’ve never been. The bathhouse in Spirited Away, those crowded alleys in An Autumn Afternoon, the Isle of Mull in I Know Where I’m Going! and now the streets of Paterson, New Jersey, Doc’s bar and the waterfalls of the Pessiac River.

hink about how you define yourself — hair color and style, jewelry, clothes, car, nail polish, piercings, tattoos, musical taste, home décor, job; these choices show others who we are, or even how we are feeling.

But what about the food you eat and the food you serve others? How does food define who we are?

Food characterizes us just as much as how we dress or what we do for a living.

Vegetarian, vegan, paleo, juice cleanses, protein shakes, macrobiotic, raw food, lowcarb, high-protein, low-FODMAPs; every choice says something about who we are, from our health requirements to our religious convictions to our concerns about the environment.

But food also defines the special events in our lives. It showcases our emotions, hopes and dreams. In these moments we often eschew the confines of our normal diet in favor of celebration.

The new year is a great example.

Around the world, people celebrate New Year’s Day with different meals, usually based around food that is native to their homeland, and often meant to symbolize health and prosperity. In the American South, folks eat collard greens and black-eyed peas; in Germany it’s sauerkraut and pork; Mexico and Denmark serve ring-shaped cakes to symbolize the year coming full circle; Italians eat a sausage and lentil stew said to bring good luck.

The Lunar New Year is coming up — Jan. 28 — meaning people across much of Asia will celebrate the new year with special dishes to symbolize health, wealth, happiness and renewal.

But traditions are susceptible to change. Bibimbap — a collection of vegetables served atop a bed of rice, gloriously crowned with an egg — used to be the traditional Korean meal served on New Year’s Eve. It was used as a way to clear out leftover food before the new year. And while this isn’t a New Year’s Eve practice

that seems to be common any longer, bibimbap is still an iconic dish of Korea.

And it’s still a way families use up leftovers after large celebrations.

In Boulder, Korea House has been serving iconic Korean fare for more than 20 years from an unassuming nook in a shopping center on Glenwood and 28th.

It’s changed a lot over the years, with Boulder Weekly describing it as “a spartan dining space with cinder block walls and minimal artwork” back in 2009. Today, Korea House is like your grandmother’s living room: cozy, filled with eclectic knickknacks, an atmosphere that acts as an invitation to sit, eat and enjoy.

If you’re looking for a dish that can warm the bones, comfort the senses and delight the taste buds — all without challenging your New Year’s resolution to fit back into those jeans — look no further than a bowl of Korea House’s bibimbap.

This dish is all about contrasting textures: soft, warm rice against crunchy veggies, chewy meat (though vegetarian varieties are common and equally delicious) and gooey egg. The egg should be cracked over the warm rice and veggies, allowed to cook ever-so-slightly, covered and removed from the heat.

And let us not forget the most important addition: kimchi, the spicy fermentation of cabbage that, without argument, is the most iconic of all Korean foods. Kimchi is eaten with all Korean meals, and I dare say you aren’t experiencing Korean cuisine without adding it to your dish. “[Korea] is one of the world’s best at branding itself through food, using its cuisine as a kind of ‘soft power’ to help spread South Korea’s influence,” the Kitchen Sisters claimed on NPR’s Morning Edition last year.

Indeed, if food defines who we are — even at a national level — then Korea is a country that values health, comfort, simplicity and tradition.

Stop navel gazing. Step away from the Cuties. It’s time to taste Cara Cara, Sumos and kumquats. asked a lot of big questions when I was a kid, some spiritual and some practical. Maybe that was a clue to my journalistic future. One day, I was eating a lemon Jello salad dotted with grated carrots and canned mandarin oranges. I remember wondering: “Where the heck did they get oranges that are that small and seed-free?”

Eventually, I learned that mandarins are one of five original types of citrus along with pummelos, citrons, kumquats and papedas from which oranges, limes, grapefruit and lemons were all created. Mandarins, clementines and tangerines are variations on the same fruit. Clementines imported from Spain and Morocco were the first wave of new, sweet, easy-peeling fruit followed by the now dominant “Cuties.”

Whether accurate or not, I attribute my strong immune system to a life-long appetite for citrus of any ilk, including an occasional piece of peel. The vitamins! The enzymes! The antioxisee NIBBLES Page 46

dants! The fiber! My theory is that chewing a whole kumquat is such an extreme sour rush that your body thinks it is facing extinction and mobilizes its defenses.

I no longer eat the white bread of the citrus world, navel oranges, because they are one-note bores and mindlessly sweet. There are so many completely different varieties currently in season at supermarkets and at Asian markets in Boulder County and Broomfield.

Valencia: Everybody knows the taste of Valencia oranges but very few of us buy the fruit itself. Valencias are the ugly, thin-skinned ones that are used to make most of the orange juice consumed in the U.S. Eating one out of hand is a tart, mouth-filling juicy experience not to be missed. The catch: Valencias are pretty pithy and have a few seeds. Like bone-in steaks, seed-y citrus has more flavor. You kids are so spoiled. When I was a boy everything had seeds in it... even the peanut butter. We spent a lot of time Wikimedia Commons in seed-spitting contests because video games hadn’t been invented yet.

Cara Cara: I love Cara Caras, a Venezuelan hybrid with a bright orange peel that is pink-orange inside with a really appealing semi-sweet flavor. Once you taste one you will never navel-gaze again.

Satsuma: Satsuma tangerines come in various sizes and varieties but I love the ones that are a little larger, with a pull-off skin, sometimes the leaf still attached. They are super-juicy with a great tartsweet balance. Other smaller, thin-skinned satsumas are also sweet. Those are the “mandarins” that often get canned.

Blood orange: Sometimes things really need to be renamed, like Cuties, dogfish and blood oranges. The latter name fits because the flesh of this orange is deep red to purple. They are typically extra-juicy with a fine sweet-tart balance. Some say the blood orange has berry nuances. To me it is more reminiscent of vintage grape Kool-ade or Nehi soda. Boulder Beer has produced an India Pale Ale flavored with blood orange juice.

Sumo: Sumos are the hot stars of the citrus world right now — a big, easy-topeel fruit with a distinctive Wikimedia Commons bump on the top. This seedless tangerine is both very sweet and extremely tart with a lot going on flavor-wise that make them highly craveable. Sumos are typically pricier and often easier to find at natural foods markets and at Asian supermarkets like H-Mart.

Meyer lemon: The Meyer lemon is an egg yolk-hued fruit that’s a little rounder than a regular lemon with thin, aromatic and slightly orange skin. They are a little sweeter and less acidic than standard supermarket lemons and great to cook with. Pastry chefs like using their juice.

Key lime: Key limes are smaller, yellower, seeded and thin-skinned compared to standard Persian limes, but smell “lime-ier” and produce the great juice and zest that make the iconic pie such a flavor treat. Key lime zest (along with zest from other citrus) is among the seven wonders of the flavor world. Don’t waste it!

Kumquat: Not technically a citrus fruit, kumquats are definitely the coolest relative. The small oval-shaped orange fruit is unique in that the peel is much sweeter Boulder Weekly

than the fruit. Some risk-takers eat them whole and raw, but many kumquats are cooked or candied. After discovering 20 big kumquats in the marked-down produce bin recently, I made my first pucker-producing batch of kumquat marmalade. I have never tasted a kumquat meringue pie but hope springs eternal.

Taste of the Week

One thing I can cook are great soups, so I seldom buy canned, dry, frozen or pre-made soup, stew or chowder.

I made an exception to sample Boulder Organic Green Chile Corn Chowder.

I’m always dubious of the many foods that plaster “Boulder” on their labels and prepared to be underwhelmed by a processed taste. Instead, this soup tastes like something I would make with sweet corn balanced by a good roasted chile presence without excessive heat.

Sold refrigerated at local supermarkets, the Boulder-made chowder is made with organic corn, potatoes, roasted green chilies and onions with chicken broth, olive oil and no preservatives. I will admit that I added pulled turkey, black pepper and extra sharp cheddar for my second bowl.

Tour de brew: 4 Noses Brewing Drinking in your inner child

But leaving the kids at home doesn’t mean that you need to leave your inner child at home. Hell, a brewery is just the place to indulge it, and at Broomfield’s 4 Noses Brewing your inner child will be delighted to find childhood breakfasts in the form of an adult happy hour. Might I suggest starting with the Honey Nut Beerios (6% ABV), a delicious brown ale served on nitro, which gives the brew a smooth mouthfeel and frothy Susan France head. As you might suspect from the name, Honey Nut Beerios is designed to resemble that popular General Mills’ cereal with a bee as the spokesman and thanks to some locally sourced honey in the batch, they strike their target. But it wasn’t Cheerios that sprang to mind as I sipped the Beerios, but the vastly superior Honey Graham Oh’s from Quaker, another circular cereal with far more crunch and kick.

I lived off Honey Graham Oh’s as a child, but not all of my friends found a similar majesty in their bowl of floating Oh’s — my friends were Philistines. Their poison was the ever popular Cinnamon Toast Crunch and the delicious horchata-like milk it left behind. For those friends, 4 Noses Brewing Owner/Brewmaster Tommy 4 Noses offers El Jefe (7.9%) Bibliowicz pouring and smelling beer.

— Spanish for The Boss — a cinnamon stout that is both well-balanced and outstanding. There are plenty of novelty beers in the world, but few of them hold up as beers in their own right. El Jefe is such a beer.

Even if cereal isn’t your thing, 4 Noses has you covered with a plethora of offerings. From the standard American IPA, ’Bout Damn Time (7.1%), to a crisp saison, Nelson Dry Hopped Saison (6.3%); both are bright, assertive and citrusy.

Both are also quite good, but my associate and I prefer to combat the cold with dark brews, and 4 Noses features the Tranconian (7.8%), a black IPA with a good strong back and a subtle roast; the Insignia (8.5%), a Dark Belgian Strong Ale that is absolutely dynamite; and Laika Boss (9%), a big, full-bodied Russian Imperial Stout that offers plenty of dark chocolate and caramel to chew on.

4 Noses Brewing is a family affair — the name came to brewmaster Tommy Bibliowicz while on vacation in Ireland with Mom, Dad and brother Dave and the four family members buried their noses in pints of Guinness to extract as many aromas as possible — which makes me wonder what other colorful cardboard boxes decorated their breakfast table. Could there be Apple Jacks Ale or Frosted Flakes Farmhouse in 4 Noses’s future? One thing is for certain if they try to do anything with Cap’n Crunch Oops! All Berries, we’ll know they’ve gone too far.

A new review shines light on the science of cannabis

T

here is a lot of debate about the benefits and harms of marijuana use, yet little is “known” about its effects.

It’s not that there isn’t a lot of research out there. Au contraire, there is quite a lot.

Just type marijuana into PubMed.com, an archive of biomedical and life sciences journal literature at the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s National Library of Medicine, and you will get over 25,000 hits.

Additionally, there are thousands more studies published in countries around the world. Countries like Jamaica, Portugal and more recently Canada take Wikimedia Commons

leadership in pioneering marijuana research, despite ongoing international prohibition by the United Nations.

Within and accompanying all of this research are various claims to the palliative, medicinal and detrimental effects of cannabis and its derivatives — everything from endorsements of its cancer healing properties to charges that its consumption leads to the use of other harmful drugs.

Some of this research is good and some of it is not. Some of these claims are defensible and some of them are not. What has been lacking so far is a skep-

tical and scientific review toward the verification of these various findings. For good reason, a claim of scientific truth comes with steep requirements that must be proven by robust, unbiased experiments that are replicable.

A new review of marijuana research by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) provides some of the much needed veracity to the thousands of claims made by the piles of research.

NASEM’s panel of 12 experts performed what might be the most comprehensive review to date, considering upwards of 10,700 U.S. studies appearing in peer-reviewed journals since 1999 to arrive at more than 100 conclusions. Here is a brief overview of their findings.

The review found “conclusive evidence” that marijuana can reduce chronic pain, supporting claims that it can function as a substitute for the use of more dangerous and addictive opioids.

There is also “conclusive evidence” that marijuana treats chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as multiple sclerosis spasticity symptoms, as reported by patients.

The review found “moderate evidence” of cannabis in improving sleep outcomes associated with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, fibromyalgia, chronic pain and multiple sclerosis.

It found “limited evidence” to support claims that marijuana improves the symptoms of dementia and glaucoma or the depressive symptoms of chronic pain and multiple sclerosis. Importantly, it also found “limited evidence” that cannabis use increases the rate of initiating other drug use.

There was “insufficient evidence” to prove cannabis’s redemptive properties concerning cancers, cancerassociated anorexia, irritable bowel syndrome, epilepsy,

spasticity in patients with paralysis due to spinal cord injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Huntington’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, dystonia, drug addiction and schizophrenia.

This does not mean cannabis or its derivatives are ineffective toward these illnesses or symptoms, just that there is not enough evidence from within the pool of studies to definitively support these claims.

Anecdotally, there are thousands of patients across the country who attest to the effectiveness of marijuana in successfully treating many of these diseases and symptoms.

The NASEM review also verified claims regarding the harmful effects of cannabis on consumers. The report did not find sufficient evidence for cannabis’s link to lung cancer or cancer of the head and neck (commonly linked to tobacco), chronic risk of heart attack, asthma, later outcomes for infants born of mothers that used marijuana during pregnancy, overdoses and PTSD. It did find moderate evidence that there are links between marijuana and the onset of certain mental illnesses, respiratory problems and impairments in driving.

Not only did the report provide a conclusive picture of the benefits and harms of marijuana but, pragmatically and importantly, it also calls into question its classification as a Schedule I substance, defined as a drug with a high potential for abuse and no medical benefit.

The study’s chairwoman, Marie McCormick, directly appealed to the federal government to relax its restrictions on research, citing specific regulatory barriers introduced by its Schedule 1 classification as well as the difficulties of gaining access to the quantity, quality and type of cannabis necessary to address research questions through the National Institute for Drug Abuse’s regulated supply.

In light of increasing availability of recreational and medicinal cannabis and the associated public health and policy concerns, McCormick is clear in her appeal that now is not the time to confuse science with politics.

Are people switching from booze to pot?

I

t’s a question people have been wondering about for years: Would marijuana be a competitor to alcohol if it were legal?

Now a new study is out suggesting it might.

The Marijuana Times recently reported that according to a study conducted by the research firm Cowen and Company, beer markets in Colorado, Oregon and Washington have “collectively underperformed” over the past three years.

All three states have both legal recreational marijuana and a popular craft beer culture.

“With all three of these states now having fully implemented a marijuana retail infrastructure, the underperformance of beer in these markets has worsened over the course of 2016,” according to the report.

Beer volumes sold in the three states are down more than 2 percent and trailing the overall U.S. beer market.

The big domestic brewers have taken the biggest hits, with Anheuser Bush and Miller-Coors experiencing sales drops of 4.4 percent of their “premium” domestic brands, like Bud Light and Coors Light, and drops of 2.4 percent of their “economy” brands as well, the report said.

Craft beer sales in the three states have fared better, but also have taken a hit. Craft beer sales have continued to grow in Oregon and Washington but at a slower pace. In Colorado, they’ve dropped outright.

Denver beer sales have taken the biggest drop according to report; they’re down 6.4 percent.

According to a recent story in The Denver Post, there are more than 150 recreational marijuana shops in the city of Denver — dozens more in the Denver metro area.

Nationally, there’s some evidence that legal pot may be impacting the alcohol industry as a whole.

A survey conducted last July found that marijuana users spent about $640 a year on pot, while alcohol users spent about $645 a year on booze. It doesn’t automatically follow that pot users in Colorado, Oregon and Washington moved some of their booze spending over the marijuana when pot became legal — it could be they just started buying pot while not cutting back on booze — but it’s not unreasonable to assume that many did so.

On the other hand, the same study found that coffee users spent more on their substance — $1,000 annually — than either marijuana or alcohol buyers spent on theirs. Chances are legal pot isn’t cutting into coffee consumption.

Both studies focused on sales data and neither directly asked consumers if they were inhaling more and imbibing less — and if so why.

Just guessing, but chances are people who smoke pot do drink less booze, if for no other reason than

Then there are a substantial number of people who will choose pot over booze for reasons like it doesn’t beat them up as much physically, doesn’t leave them as hung over and reduces the chances of them getting in a fight. It really is the safer drug, and most people who use it don’t need a peer-reviewed study to tell them.

So is there any truth to the belief that big alcohol was behind marijuana prohibition and the war on drugs? It’s true that some booze interests have contributed to anti-legalization efforts, most notably in Arizona, but if marijuana prohibition was an alcohol industry plot, it was one of the most spectacularly bad decisions in business history.

When the feds outlawed marijuana in 1937, there were about 100,000 pot users in the county.

Today, after 70 years of war on pot, there are about 25 million. And the great surge in marijuana occurred in the ’60s, when marijuana became an iconic part of rebellion and the counter-culture. If it hadn’t been forbidden, that wouldn’t have happened.

Back in September a Nevada woman died after getting infected with a drug-resistant bacterium, which was resistant to all antibiotics that were available in the United States.

That news will surely make you take all 10 days of your prescription, no matter how “fine” you feel after two days.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) finally released a report on the incident last week, saying that drugs will always need to evolve as bacteria mutates and grows more resilient. And it looks like drug manufactures are behind the curve, according to the CDC, with drug applications for new antibiotics dropping steadily over the last 30 years.

Now, if that doesn’t sound like the first five minutes of a zombie apocalypse movie then we don’t know what else does.

And considering the bigot troll dictator baby man being sworn in this weekend sounds like the first chapter in a teen YA dystopian novel, we can all agree the end of the world has arrived.

The only thing left to do is take bets as to when, where and which way wins.
