Clarification: A Jan. 12 story, “A tale of two predators,” stated that Brent Brents estimated he had raped 60 men, women and children in his lifetime. In fact, he guessed he raped 60 people during the seven months he was out of jail. During his lifetime, he guessed the total was in the hundreds.

Defending marriage

As a liberal, card-carrying Democrat, I am nonetheless appalled by Pamela White’s article “Defending divorce” (Uncensored, Jan. 5). When nearly one out of every two marriages ends in divorce, divorce hardly needs defending. Besides that, the article is filled with erroneous assumptions and information, which I would like to debunk.

To consider it to be “meddling” that a proposed law requiring couples with children to take a class about the impact of divorce and to have a “cooling off ” period prior to divorcing demonstrates no appreciation for the havoc divorce leaves in its wake. Children have no veto power in a decision that will forever alter their lives. Minimally, parents should learn about the insidious ways divorce affects their children.

In regards to the proposed waiting period, the author writes, “Once two people have decided they can’t stand the sight of each other, there’s really no place to go.” As a therapist specializing in work with couples on the brink for

nearly three decades, I know that divorce is almost always a unilateral decision, leaving the desperate spouse in the dust. “Left-behind” spouses will jump at the opportunity to slow things down.

their bottomless troves of corporate cash. This is an absurd perversion of nature itself. A person, after all, has a navel. Where’s the corporate navel — or its heart, brain or soul?

Also, if a corporation is a person, shouldn’t it be subject to front-line military duty, to jail for its criminal violations, and even to the death penalty?

As a reader pointed out to me in a recent email, many states do not allow persons under 18 years of age to marry (or, in corporate terminology, to merge). Plus, such young persons are subject to curfews and cannot legally be served alcohol. If you see a young corporation violating any of these teen laws — call the cops on them!

he Powers That Be constantly try to pull the wool over people’s eyes, but sometimes the wool blinders are so itchy that people rip them off and clearly see the scam.

One of the itchiest ever is the Kafkaesque fiction, put forth by America’s right-wing power establishment, that corporations are “persons” with the Constitutional right to control our elections with Boulder Weekly

dilemma — get out or stay miserable.

But there’s another way — improve relationships so people feel happier and more connected. There are marriagefriendly therapy and evidenced-based marriage education classes that truly change the dynamics of failing relationships.

makes such a power play that the very idea of it becomes a national joke, both the idea and the cabal are in trouble. That’s the case with the comical claim of “personhood” for corporations. All across the country, beneath the radar of Americans’ clueless elites, a savvy and scrappy grassroots coalition is mobilizing to overturn the anti-democratic effort by the Supreme Court, corporate front groups, and political sell-outs to enthrone corporate money over the people. On Jan. 20 and 21 there will be two national days of action to rally public support for a Constitutional amendment to reject the farce of corporate personhood.

or an inability to manage conflict — all of which are solvable.

The author also refers to a valid statistic that more women than men file for divorce, but her hypothesis about why this happens — women’s unfair share of housework and child care, infidelity, money problems — is off base.

Most women leave because they feel emotionally neglected despite years of trying to get their husbands to be more responsive. Again, with help, these problems are resolvable.

Divorce should not be looked at as a jailbreak from prison. Research tells us that, contrary to popular belief, people in long-term, healthy marriages live longer, are healthier, happier and do significantly better financially. Their children do better across countless dimensions.

So before jumping to the conclusion that putting a beat between the decision to divorce and moving out is Big Brother in action, consider the benefits of spouses working things out, keeping

their families intact and tucking kids in at night … together.

The vast majority of divorces are from low-conflict marriages. Research shows considerable harm to children of divorce, including academic, social and psychological issues, as well as higher rates of poverty. Recent study of lifetime effects of children of divorce also showed an expected five-year decrease in lifespan for children of divorce versus children from intact families.

Given the real challenges for these children who have no voice in the matter, it’s not too much to ask parents to be fully informed and to consider if their marriage is reconcilable. n the past couple of years, the city of Boulder has done a number of things not to help the homeless, but rather to make life much more difficult for them.

First, it was the camping ban.

Though this ban on sleeping in public places has long been in effect, it garnered a great deal of attention when enforcement seemed to pick up, with homeless people being ticketed for sleeping — something every human being must do.

Then it was the park closures. The closures were a way of reining in Occupy Boulder protesters, but they also eliminated the need for the police to determine whether someone was camping in a park or whether they were simply sitting in a park. Now, it’s against the rules to be in the park during a closure, whether you’re asleep or not. The new rule also enables police to confiscate personal belongings “abandoned” in the park during a closure.

Now, Boulder City Attorney Tom Carr has notified our city leaders that he wants to eliminate our right to jury trial for most municipal tickets. Why? In part because he would like to do away with the glut of requests for jury trials from homeless people who’ve been ticketed as a result of the camping ban and the park closure rules.

Carr would accomplish this by getting the penalty for a first or second offense lowered from a maximum of a $1,000 fine and up to 90 days in jail to a $500 fine. Offenders would still have access to a trial by judge, but could not request a trial by jury.

While it’s a great idea to eliminate jail time for city tickets — people who don’t have car insurance, who litter or who fail to shovel snow off their sidewalk don’t belong in jail — we shouldn’t let the city take away anyone’s right to a jury trial without a knock-down, dragout fight.

That right is enshrined in the Sixth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, but the ideas behind it go back to Magna Carta. The intent of a jury trial is to allow those accused of crimes to a hearing before their peers, rather than leaving them subject to the whims of the ruling class.

David Harrison, a local attorney, has taken on the cause of those homeless

who’ve been ticketed for sleeping in public. Since 2010, he’s requested jury trials about 60 times.

“There are two or three hundred people who are going to be on the street any given night in Boulder,” Harrison says.

There simply are not enough beds to get everyone off the street. By closing public parks at night, the city created yet another obstacle for the homeless when it comes to finding a place to be at night.

“Now I guess it’s too much trouble to give these people jury trials,” Harrison says.

There are probably several reasons why Carr would like to eliminate people’s right to a jury trial. For one, jury trials are more time-intensive, requiring courts to question potential jurors and seat a jury. Secondly, dismissals and acquittals cut into city profits. But perhaps most importantly, jury trials are much more likely to result in dismissals and acquittals than trials by judge.

Juries, after all, can choose not to convict if they believe a law is unjust or was unfairly enforced, whereas judges are more likely to look at the letter of the law. A pattern of acquittals helps to weaken unjust ordinances and statutes, calling the law itself into question. And that’s exactly what is happening with jury trials of the homeless in Boulder.

Harrison says that during the questioning period, he’s seen potential jurors react with shock to learn the details of our homeless camping ordinance. And it shows in their verdicts. Of the homeless cases Harrison has taken, 78 percent have either been dismissed or won at trial — a percentage that takes a lot of the fun out of busting homeless people.

But if jury trials are eliminated, Harrison says, that percentage will shrink dramatically.

City Council was stupid to pass the park closure rule. Let’s hope they find the principles and courage to stand up for our right to a jury trial. If Boulder’s municipal courts can’t handle the load of jury cases requested by homeless campers, perhaps the real problem is the law itself.

By building the Plutonium Parkway, Broomfield and their ilk will deliver a “double whammy” to the people of the Front Range of Colorado. First, by destroying the viability of the Rocky Flats National Wildlife Refuge, this “Plutonium Parkway” will eliminate a vital wildlife refuge from being so.

Moreover, the Rocky Flats NWR remains one of the few, last and necessary wildlife corridors from the mountains to the plains, and by eradicating this NWR by building this atrocity guarantees Colorado a diminished future.

Secondly, by the movement of mountains of plutonium-laced dirt, remnants of the nuclear weapons facility formerly on this site, the prevailing winds will induce cancers of every make and kind amongst all humans and animals living and breathing the plutonium, killing many and maiming the rest.

I wish the Southern Ute Indian tribe (owner of the Candelas project, driving this porkway) no ill will, but I’d prefer them building this development within a poor country such as Afghanistan, a land that really needs such investments.

As for Broomfield, I’ll continue to buy nothing there, as the worst thing you can do with a spendthrift is to give them more money to squander on their real estate whores.

I’ve often remarked that the White Man is digging his own grave by gambling in Indian-owned casinos, so much so that the tribes will earn enough to buy America back and evict the whites back to Europe, or wherever they came from.

This is no different than banning books and movies. As U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis wrote — to avert the evil of the dangers of unfettered speech, the remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.

ove To Amend, a national coalition with local affiliates across Colorado, is calling for a day of action on Friday, Jan. 20.

Occupy the Courts asks volunteers to occupy federal courthouses for one day in more than 100 U.S. cities.

Steve Justino, co-chair of Colorado Move to Amend (MTA) and Metro Denver MTA, says that the occupations will be focused on raising awareness.

“The purpose of Occupy the Courts is to educate the American public to the fact that the Supreme Court has taken our human constitutional rights and given them over to corporations,” says Justino. “With those constitutional rights that they shouldn’t have, the cor-

ongmont residents are being invited to weigh in on the proposed redevelopment of the First and Main intersection as a transit area.

Options for the revitalization effort, which was prompted in part by the Regional Transportation District’s long-term plans for a commuter rail station at the site, include housing, bike trails, walking paths, restaurants, retail and light manufacturing uses. The closure of the nearby Butterball plant has only added to the opportunities to regenerate the area, officials say.

commissioners voted unanimously in December to approve a cropland policy that allows certain GMOs, like sugar beets, to be planted on open space if they meet a set of criteria and are rotated with non-GM crops.

Toor agrees that the cropland policy is unlikely to be changed any time soon, but says he expects to see action in 2012 on related elements, like the commissioners’ legislative agenda to encourage labeling of GM foods, policy language aimed at protecting pollinators, and working with farmers and the local natural foods industry to expand opportunities in the organic food market.

“I don’t see, at any time in the near future, that we’ll be revisiting the cropland policy,” Toor told Boulder Weekly.

“Any major changes to the cropland policy would be looked at by a future set of commissioners, after the 2012 election.”

When asked whether the county should pursue stronger regulations for another controversial practice, hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” Gardner says she supports proposed legislation by state Rep. Matt Jones (D-Louisville) to give local jurisdictions more authority over oil and gas drilling operations.

“The oil and gas commission really hasn’t done their job in terms of outlining those regulations,” she says. “They were charged with doing that in 2008 and they haven’t ever really addressed them.”

But Gardner adds that it would be preferable to have consistent, strong, statewide regulations, rather than having a different set of regulations created by every city and county.

“We need to have consistency that works in a way that makes sense to all

news cities and counties,” she says.

Gardner was named by a local Democratic Party vacancy committee to replace District 2 Commissioner Ben Pearlman this month after Pearlman was appointed by his two fellow commissioners as county attorney in December.

According to the Boulder Camera, the appointment of Pearlman raised eyebrows, in part because a recording of an executive session indicated that Toor and Commissioner Cindy Domenico agreed on the selection of Pearlman in secret, rather than in public, as required by law.

Gardner reaffirms that executive sessions should not be held for decision-making, and that county officials need to be vigilant about being transparent and accountable, and they need to recognize that perceptions are important.

As for the actions of Toor and Domenico, Gardner says, “I think they were totally well-intentioned and probably did the best they could with the advice they had, and if they had to do it over again, they might do it a bit differently.”

For her part, Gardner has pledged to not pursue a staff position with the county for a period of time after her service as commissioner.

Gardner, who plans to run for a full term as commissioner in November, says her top priority for 2012 is creating jobs and reducing the poverty level, and she was just appointed to the board of Workforce Boulder.

She also lists the importance of early childhood education and the Circles Campaign, which partners community volunteers and leaders with families in need.

Rick Casey, one of the founders of the Boulder affiliate of MTA, said that the passing of 2H in November was a crucial step in reaching MTA’s goals.

“We were one of three cities to pass a resolution, which is part of the overall strategy of Move To Amend,” says Casey. “They want more and more local governments to try to pass things like this, to start at the bottom and work our way to the top. We want to show that the citizens want to amend this, and that they do not think that corporations should be considered people.”

Justino expects a turnout of 500 to 1,000 people on Friday.

In 2011, the city began planning to issue new bonds for the water fund to save money through lower interest rates. As a result of the rating, the increased value of the bonds combined with the lower interest rate is expected to save Lafayette taxpayers more than $1 million over the next 15 years.

Romney trainwreck atching Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign has been like watching The Human Centipede, the 2009 horror movie about a mad scientist who creates a “pet” centipede by kidnapping three hapless victims and surgically attaching their mouths to the others’ rectums.

It’s terrible, out of touch with reality and disgusting on many levels, yet you can’t for the love of Tebow stop watching it.

One of Mittens’ weaknesses is that people perceive him as robotic and disconnected from the reality of the lives of normal Americans. Yet he seems to take every possible opportunity to accidentally reveal that he is a very, very rich man.

Romney has not yet released his financial records, but The New York Times recently quoted him as saying that his effective tax rate is about 15 percent, about what self-employed people pay for Social Security and Medicare — and that’s before paying federal, state and other taxes. The low rate, he says, is because he now makes most of his income on “capital gains,” that is, profit from previous investments. (Capital gains, abominably, are taxed at about half of what normal income is, but that is a subject for another day.)

He also said that he made some income from speeches, but “not very much.”

And how much is “not very much,” looking through Romney’s diamond-lined glasses? Just under $375,000. The 2009 median household income in the United States was $50,221.

There are many more examples of this, such as when Mittens joked to a working class audience that he, too, was unemployed; or when he challenged then-contender Rick Perry to a $10,000 bet during a debate. But our favorite came when a boy handed him an origami crane made out of a $1 bill. Touched, Romney accepted the crane and looked for a dollar to give the kid for his efforts. But he couldn’t find one — he was only carrying Benjamins.

This is the man who could be in charge of the fates of the working class. Do you really trust him to represent your interests?

But wait, it’s all going to be OK. You see, Deen is now being paid by a Danish company to endorse its diabetes drug. So you can still cook like Deen, and when you get diabetes, just take the drug she’s pushing at the same time.

“I’ve always said, ‘Practice moderation, y’all.’ I’ll probably say that a little louder now,” Deen said on Jan. 17. “You can have diabetes and have a piece of cake, You cannot have diabetes and eat a whole cake.”

Duh. Some are rightfully calling her a hypocrite because she continued to promote an unhealthy diet after learning she had diabetes, and is now pimping a drug that will treat the condition that can be caused by her menu.

more likker? ity Council member Macon Cowles raised a question this week in response to Hill establishment La’au’s recent request to serve alcohol until 2:30 a.m.

He asked for “an examination of a listing of all the violence and death by motor vehicle accidents in which alcohol was implicated during the last 10 years, within five blocks of the applicant’s place of business and during the hours from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.”

Considering the University of Colorado’s sordid history of student alcohol abuse, he raises an interesting question.

The city council voted 9-0 on Jan. 17 to call up the La’au’s request for a full public hearing at a future meeting. Stay tuned.

“My main research area has been nanotechnology and very small optics, so it’s good to get out and apply things,” Mickelson says. “Most of the research I’ve done has been laboratory research over the last 30 years, and it’s all been support and applications for communications, but it’s kind of fascinating to get out into the world … and see how these new technological innovations work with people.”

These projects also allow future generations of engineers a chance to experience and engage with engineering work in the places it’s critically needed.

“We need to give them a more broad, a more complete education, rather than just mathematics and laboratory science, and I think this is a really good one,” Mickelson says.

Matthew Hulse, an engineering graduate student who joined the trip to Haiti, calls the trip a success and says the experience was eye-opening.

“I think that most of the information and my expectations before the trip had to deal with the high level of what’s going on in the country, like major aid involvements with big organizations that are involved on the ground,” Hulse says. “But being in the country, outside of the city of Port-au-Prince, and seeing conditions with my own eyes, for example, how many people are using the one water pump that’s available in town or how many children are living in a small shack that was built by an aid organization, was reinforcing of what the situation is like even two years after the earthquake.”

The team will return over the next year to continue exploring possibilities for the project, developing the program to train Haitians to train others locally in installing solar panel systems.

“Instead of doing energy education in someplace like the United States, to do it somewhere where real results may translate to having a greater impact in the short term I think is really important,” Hulse says. “And Haiti is definitely a country that needs an opportunity like that.”

iggy Marley wants people to get up, stand up and be heard, especially when it comes to genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

The eldest son of the late reggae star Bob Marley is headlining a benefit concert at the Boulder Theater on Saturday, Jan. 21, in an effort to raise funds and awareness for the fight against GMOs. The event, hosted by GMO Free Boulder, is titled “Wild and GMO Free,” a take-off on the title of Ziggy Marley’s 2011 album, Wild and Free.

Marley’s appearance was made possible

by White Wave founder Steve Demos of GMO Free Boulder.

“I have worked with Ziggy before and know that he is passionate about organic food and the natural image of Boulder,” Demos says. “He was very gracious in accepting this invitation, and we are quite excited to see such a notable celebrity supporting this local and important issue.”

Mary VonBreck, campaign manager for GMO Free Boulder, says funds raised by the benefit concert will go toward education and awareness efforts, because while a survey has shown that about 70 percent of Boulder County

residents oppose GMOs on public lands, it also showed that many don’t have a good understanding of the subject.

“I hope the concert continues the momentum we have in raising both money and awareness,” says GMO Free supporter Doug Radi, chair of Naturally Boulder and vice president of marketing for Rudi’s Organic Bakery.

For Marley, GMOs are just the latest example of the establishment trying to pull the wool over the eyes of the people.

“What we stand for is natural living in nature, and that’s close to what the concert and benefit is about: the freedom of the people, the freedom to choose,” he tells Boulder Weekly. “We should have some say in the food that we’re gonna put in our bodies, and have the right to know and the right to say. If this is the people’s land, then the people must have the right to say something about it.”

Marley adds that the GMO debate is an opportunity to send a message to the powers that be.

people must stand up for their rights, the freedom to know, the freedom of knowledge,” he says. “We need people to be a part of it, and not just expect someone else to do it. We need everyone, everyone, to be a part of this. It’s that important. … It will send a message that the people are awake, that the people are aware. That will give pause to the machine that is trying to circumvent the people’s will.”

As early as 1988, Marley was writing lyrics like, “Here comes synthetic foods / And their big-time money / And they want to control / Our body and soul.”

He acknowledges that he was speaking more about processed food at the time, but feeding himself and his children food that is naturally and locally grown, even in one’s own backyard perhaps, has long been a priority, Marley says.

And the antiGMO theme is wellsuited to his music, he explains, noting that he won’t have to alter his standing set list much for the concert.

“It’s funny, my set list fits right in already, I don’t have to change anything,” Marley says. “We sing about revolution, we sing about freedom, we sing about love. My message and my music fit right in with ideals like this.”

Another reason for the people to rise up, he says, is the Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision that essentially granted corporations personhood, untying their hands to spend as much as they want on election campaigns.

“It’s so crude it’s funny,” Marley says.

“It’s funny that the American people accept that so easily. I don’t even know what the heck that means, corporations are people. When did that happen? Who decided that? Did God come to them?

Who decides who are people now? The Supreme Court? I think they have the idea that they could do anything and it doesn’t matter because the people are so distracted and in their own self-absorbed thing that they could put anything over on us. Believe that. They’ve done it before, and they’ll keep doing it.

“If we the people can use the power of our voice to overcome the power of the influence of money and media and government, then we can get the truth out and give people a choice. Money is a powerful tool in this society.

Sometimes it buys silence where there should be no silence.”

He adds that he is currently working on a song that he will give away for free about recent revolutions that have been Boulder Weekly

going on around the world, from the Middle East to the Occupy movement in America.

“Music should play a role in these things, and has in the past,” Marley says. “But because of the musical atmosphere and environment in America, especially today, you find that pop music does not reflect this type of revolutionary idea. The pop music of today reflects a fantasy of sex and money and fabulous living. Music is nothing but an entertainment factor, and does nothing for the movement of change in the world.

We want to put music back in its proper place.”

His album Wild and Free has been nominated for a Grammy, which Marley says is nice, but he doesn’t take such things too seriously.

“It’s cool, but art cannot be judged by a commission of judges,” he says. “There’s no such thing as the best art. While we appreciate it, we cannot put too much behind it, the idea of it, where if you win, that means you are the best. That’s not how my art is judged. My art should be judged by its content, what it’s saying, and how it affects people’s lives. And you don’t get a prize for that. You don’t get a trophy for that.”

As usual, the set list on Saturday figures to have a few of his famous father’s tunes sprinkled in. And despite what some might think, he doesn’t get tired of being asked about his dad — or playing his music.

“I love singing it, I love doing it,” he says. “It feels natural to me.”

On a different note, Marley confesses that he is closet fan of our fair state.

“I’ve been thinking about moving to Colorado,” he says with a laugh. “I’m looking for some space, you know, some land, and grow some food and have some animals. You know, like a country life. I like Colorado.”

Marley is also well aware that Colorado voters may be asked to legalize marijuana in the November election, and it’s no surprise where he stands on that issue.

“It shouldn’t be something that is abused, we still have to be conscious about how we use this plant,” he says.

“But to criminalize using it is wrong.”

Still, he doesn’t think legalization will occur nationally any time soon.

“Politicians are weak-minded,” Marley says. “They are not free-minded.

They blow with the wind. Anywhere the wind is blowing, they’ll blow. But it never stopped anybody from smoking marijuana.”

Pilobolus rewrites the rules of modern dance

orty years ago at Dartmouth College, it wasn’t “those who can’t dance, teach.” It was those who can’t dance, reinvent the medium itself.

Four college students with no prior dance experience enrolled in a dance class and, lacking the traditional dance vocabulary, started to play with what their bodies could do. They went on to launch a dance company that has been turning the ideas of modern dance on their head — and wrapping them around, tying them in knots and bending them backwards.

“Lack of training disallowed us from focusing on our bodies as ballet or model vessels.

They were clay. They were raw material that we had to figure out something to do with,” says Michael Tracy, one of the founding members and current artistic directors of the now internationally renowned dance company Pilobolus. “That sort of necessitated a wider range of images for us, that was available to us, it just let out a whole vocabulary of dance movement that we weren’t able to do.”

Dance just sort of caught their imaginations, Tracy says, and they built on what they did know — a sense of athleticism and theatricality — to complete weekly homework assignments in choreography.

“When we graduated, we decided it would be more interesting to start a dance company than to become lawyers or philosophers,” Tracy says.

The company has evolved in the decades since then, taking advice from critics, but more importantly, constantly taking input from its dancers. Rather than having a single choreographer, the company looks to

“The dancers, they morph in front of you.

They could be one or two or three or six combined, and you see animals that have nothing to do with the people that are performing them, and so you want these costumes that are malleable,” Tracy says. “They need to be people, and then they need to be trees or a forest of trees. … But inevitably it’s people. That’s the thing that makes dance interesting. No matter what the shapes and the colors and the costumes are, those are people moving in ways that we never thought of moving, but with a little bit of training we could be.”

The primary concern, though, for their two-week tour in Colorado, is altitude.

Dancers are packing aspirin for altitude sickness, and oxygen tanks will be waiting in the wings, Tracy says.

This is the third performance — and third sold-out performance — of Pilobolus in Boulder.

“My first response was, how in the world do they do that?” says Joan Braun, executive director of CU Presents, which is bringing Pilobolus back. “Their particular kind of weight-sharing, it’s a really interesting way to collaborate with another person where you’re kind of creating a sculpture of human forms. … There’s a little bit of a ‘don’t try this at home,’ which of course we all do, with very humorous results.”

The program includes pieces that have not been performed in Boulder before, such as “All is Not Lost,” which was created for the music video for the song of the same name by the band OK Go and has been nominated for a Grammy.

“It’s been kind of an Internet sensation,” Braun says. “It’s really interesting, mind-bending, to figure out, how are they doing this?”

While it’s hardly a substitute for seeing the show, it’s just enough of a dose of human clay in action to start melting your brain.

“Compared with most companies, who have one choreographer who has a specific style that may develop over the years but is essentially one viewpoint, we’ve already had a number of choreographers. We work collaboratively. We always have,” Tracy says.

That collaboration has built a diverse repertoire of pieces over the years.

“Surprisingly, as the dances have changed over the years and our bodies have changed, we haven’t run out of things you can do with six human bodies,” Tracy says. “We keep finding things that are interesting and complex and confounding.”

Dominic Lalli saxes up Boulder Theater

ocal electronic hero and faithful ally to the saxophone Dominic Lalli was all smiles when Boulder Weekly caught up with him last week, and for good reason.

Last year proved to be a breakout year for Big Gigantic. The duo, which includes live drummer Jeremy Salken, hit plenty of milestones: Big G opened for Sound Tribe Sector 9 at Red Rocks (a recognized launch pad for upcoming artists that includes Bassnectar and The Glitch Mob), stole the show at Global Dance Festival on an otherwise lackluster day, and returned to the Fox Theatre for their first hometown headline that sold out nearly within 24 hours.

But mere weeks into 2012, the band is clearly hungry for more. Now Big G has sold out the spacious Boulder Theater, booked a slot at Wakarusa, and most impressively, shot their newest album Nocturnal up to No. 2 on iTunes’ electronic releases, right behind M83’s reigning Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.

The best part? Nocturnal, like all Big Gigantic releases, was released free to the public. Lalli said that the iTunes option wasn’t even promoted until days after the release, well after Nocturnal shot to the top.

Lalli credits this to fans who have the intention of supporting the band despite the freebie, and others who turn to iTunes for ease of use. However, it seems no amount of generosity could keep Nocturnal from shaking up the charts.

The free-for-all model has already worked for many artists, especially Colorado-based electronica acts such as Pretty Lights. “I was talking to Derek [Smith Austin Nelson

of Pretty Lights] probably six months ago, and I was like man, people are buying these! And he was like, ‘Yeah dude, it’s this phenomenon, I don’t know what it is.’”

For those who haven’t picked it up, Nocturnal represents Big G in prime form. If their debut album, Fire It Up, was an experiment, an effort to reconcile Lalli’s jazz saxophone training with his love of dropping furious bass bombs, then Nocturnal is the polished gem of this experience, presenting the band’s well-known formula at its most clear-cut and energetic.

“It’s been a crazy year on so many fronts,” Lalli says, “and I think these tunes evoke a lot of different stuff between all the different songs. That’s what we always have been about, and this album, we did the best job at getting them from my head and my heart out, and it’s more accurate than it’s ever been.”

“Rise and Shine” is the first standout single, released as an album teaser, and it’s a perfect example of this confidence and energy. Tracks like “Eyes Open” begin with a somber Baroque-style piano intro, while others like “Hopscotch” incorporate Dutch house grime, and “Heavyweight Champion” marks a return to the original Big Gigantic hip-hop bounce.

Though A Place Behind The Moon was successful at

paving ahead for the band, Nocturnal by comparison is elementally seamless. But the most striking aspect of Nocturnal is the clear passion behind it. Each new Big G release exudes increasing passion and joy.

“I’ve learned so many techniques in terms of producing and making tones,” Lalli says, “but I had a lot of these things in my head, even on our past albums, and didn’t have the knowledge to get it out in the right way ... to speak clearly in a different language.”

“I feel like we still have a lot of room to grow, and we gotta get there as quick as we can,” Lalli continues.

“It’s January and there’s a lot of 2012 left. We’re thinking about what’s about to come, not what can I do and how can I replicate it. It’s like, well, this happened, so what’s it gonna look like in eight months?”

Rhapsody in Tweedy Wilco’s latest album a collective effort

ver the course of Wilco’s seven previous studio albums, singer/guitarist Jeff Tweedy has been viewed as the musical brains behind the critically acclaimed band.

But one thing that is immediately apparent in talking to Wilco guitarist Nels Cline is that, as much as Tweedy is bandleader and songwriter, other voices are being heard on the group’s album. On the new Wilco CD, The Whole Love, multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, in particular, also had a big hand in helping make The Whole Love what it is.

this record in some way — and not in the most obvious ways. I don’t mean shine time like heroically, but I mean, musically.”

Cline said a collaborative atmosphere in the studio has existed on all three CDs this lineup has recorded — 2007’s Sky Blue Sky, 2009’s Wilco (The Album) and now The Whole Love.

“There was a lot of freedom for sure and a lot of experimentation and a lot of ideas just put out there,” Cline says of The Whole Love sessions. “We were able to see what made the cut without getting too precious about it.”

As a result, some songs, such as “Art Of Almost” and “Sunloathe,” underwent considerable transformations. But on a couple of other songs — “Black Moon” and “One Sunday Morning (song for Jane Smiley’s boyfriend)” — much of original demo recording was used on the finished track.

In the end, the 12 songs that made the cut for The Whole Love make up one of Wilco’s more eclectic efforts.

The Whole Love has gentle, largely acoustic tracks like “Black Moon” and the 12-minute “One Sunday Morning (song for Jane Smiley’s boyfriend).”

There are also several compact poppy rockers (“I Might,” “Dawned On Me” and “Standing O”) that feature immediately enticing hooks and a couple of other catchy songs that stretch out a bit more with instrumental segments (“Born Alone” and “Art Of Almost”).

Cline is very pleased with the finished CD. “This record has some pretty strong bold rock with big choruses,” he says.

“It’s not super heavy, but I think it still packs a punch. I think that’s what I like about the sort of pop-rock songs on this record is that as poppy as they might be, they still have some crunch and a couple of good blows to the breadbasket.”

recent phone interview. “I think he was just so full of ideas, and I don’t know, there was certainly not a spoken alliance that emerged with Jeff and Pat on this record. I think it was an organic one. But the next thing I knew, Jeff was kind of sitting back and letting Pat try anything and everything.”

In fact, Sansone’s contributions to The Whole Love were significant enough that he was given co-production credit, along with Tweedy and Tom Schick — the first time a band member other than Tweedy has been recognized as such on a Wilco CD. (The band as a whole has gotten production credit on several other CDs.) The idea that a band member other than Tweedy took the reigns, at least in some significant respect, during the making of The Whole Love goes against perceptions of the group’s inner workings.

Tweedy, of course, formed Wilco in 1994 after the split of Uncle Tupelo, the influential country-inflected rock band that Tweedy co-fronted with Jay Farrar (now of Son Volt).

From the start Wilco was viewed as Tweedy’s group. And a series of personnel changes that occurred prior to 2004 and left Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt as the only remaining original band members further reinforced the notion that Tweedy was running the whole Wilco show. Cline, Sansone, drummer Glenn Kotche and keyboardist Mike Jorgensen complete a lineup that has been in place since 2004.

But what’s apparent in talking with Cline is that while Tweedy is the band’s songwriter and he makes the call in terms of what songs end up on the band’s CDs, Wilco is far from a oneman show.

“Certainly everyone’s personalities emerge strongly on this record,” Cline says of The Whole Love. “I don’t think there is any lack of anyone shining on

Nederland Area The obvious starting point for snowshoe fun in Nederland is the network of trails just behind Eldora Ski Area.

Eldora has specially groomed nordic trails (and rentals) within their boundaries, but if you bring your own gear, you can get onto the national forest land trails without a fee. Park just before the ski area if you plan to explore these trails to save parking room for those on the slopes.

Just past the town of Eldora is the popular Hessie Trailhead, whose premier destination is Lost Lake, which is a good day out for snowshoers of all levels. Heart Lake, accessed from Moffat Tunnel’s East Portal, is a gorgeous winter destination, featuring a wide-open, frozen landscape just below the Continental Divide.

Daring souls can venture from the same trailhead to Crater Lakes, which are challenging destinations that often require some solid off-trail navigation.

The Brainard Lake trail network is well known, with snowshoe-specific trails and a variety of destinations, including the CMC Cabin and the frozen alpine basins at Long Lake and Lake Isabelle.

Sometimes overlooked are the trails out of Peaceful Valley, about seven miles north of the turn-off for Brainard Lake from the Peak-to-Peak Highway. These trails follow a winter creek system, and if you’re lucky, you may see one of the resident moose in the area.

Boulder Weekly

Estes Park/Allenspark Rocky Mountain National Park has dozens of well-documented snowshoe trails, such as Emerald Lake, Glacier Gorge and Cub Lake. Be warned, however, that the park can be crowded on weekends, especially when the sun is shining.

A nice alternative is the Meadow Mountain Trail out of Allenspark, a modest trail that leads to the summits of Meadow Mountain and St. Vrain Mountain. Be aware that once you climb past treeline there is an avalanche risk even though the terrain looks benign.

If you want to make it to a relatively safe winter summit, try Twin Sisters Peaks just outside the town of Estes Park. The trail up is primarily in treeline, popping out just long enough to reach the spacious summits.

If you’re looking for a long day, start from the Longs Peak Trailhead and work your way up to the famous Boulder Field or Chasm Lake. And if you’ve gone that far, a summit of Lady Mount Washington is a good way to snag an elusive winter peak.

I-70 Corridor One of the best places to get quality snowshoeing is the Herman Gulch trailhead just off of I-70, located at exit 218. Herman Gulch splits to two fine destinations: Herman Lake Basin to the west and Watrous Gulch to the east.

Watrous Gulch is far less traveled and is ideal for those seeking a day away from the crowds.

The trails at James Peak start at a trailhead eight miles off I-70 exit 238.

Here you can play on the receding St. Mary’s Glacier or detour just before the trailhead to visit Chinns Lake.

Finally, if you don’t mind driving just a bit farther, the snowshoeing off of Berthoud Pass is a feast for the senses on both the east and west sides.

On the east, take the old Berthoud Ski Area road to Colorado Mines Peak, where you can follow the ridgeline north to Mount Flora (just be careful of the heavy cornices that form on the east-facing ridges).

On the west, start up the steep slopes that eventually level off and make for a nice traverse to Stanley Mountain. The views from Stanley are spectacular, though the area can get bitterly cold if the wind is howling.

There are many more snowshoeing hot spots waiting to be discovered, but this overview should give you a solid idea of what’s waiting within an hour or so of Boulder. So fill up your thermos, strap on your snowshoes and get out there — the mountains await your company.

t’s a shame that Boulder rarely holds enough winter snow to break out the snowshoes on a regular basis. On those occasions when we get significant snowfall, Boulder’s forested trails are a wonderful place to spend a powder day tromping through the woods.

Much like the ephemeral town of Brigadoon, Boulder’s snow is far too fleeting. Some of the best local trails to visit when we are lucky enough to get a big snowfall include Heil Ranch, the Annie White Trail, the Ceran St. Vrain Trail just west of Jamestown and Walker Ranch/Myers Homestead.

The open space mountain trails are always fun as well, and they tend to hold their snow better thanks to their higher elevations and shady cover.

Green Mountain, Bear Peak and South Boulder Peak are excellent snowshoe outings in fresh powder.

The more consistent and worthy snow can be found over 8,000 feet.

There are plenty of great places to explore within an hour or so of Boulder that will hold their snow until late spring.

Keys to a healthier diet

ew Year’s resolutions usually go something like this: Pay off all debt. Quit smoking.

Shed those 25 pounds that don’t seem to budge.

But most resolutions are so extreme that they have very little staying power.

“People easily become discouraged when they set big goals because they are too overwhelming,” says Sarah Zangerle, a dietitian at Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Comprehensive Weight Loss Center. “In order to keep the motivation going, it’s important to focus on small, achievable goals.”

In other words, baby steps. Below are six steps for a healthier diet in 2012.

Go meatless once a week The average American eats half a pound of meat per day. Research shows too much animal fat can increase your risk of diabetes and cancer.

“Eating a vegetarian diet lowers your BMI (body mass index) and decreases your blood pressure and risk for many chronic diseases,” says Dee Gabbard, a clinical dietitian at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center in Milwaukee.

According to Meatless Monday, a nonprofit initiative of The Monday Campaigns, going meatless just one day a week is enough to improve your health.

Shake your salt habit Sodium, also known as salt, is a necessary evil. Although our bodies need sodium to function properly, too much can cause high blood pressure.

But hiding the salt shaker is only the beginning. “More than 80 percent of the sodium we consume comes from restaurants and processed foods,” Gabbard says.

Many people should be getting only 1,500 milligrams of sodium, according to the latest dietary guidelines from the American Dietetic Association.

“The key is reading labels,” says Margaret Allen, registered dietitian at Columbia St. Mary’s in Milwaukee.

Think outside the box Boxed and prepackaged foods have a lot going for them. They seem to last forever and can be transported easily. That’s because preservatives, artificial colors, partially hydrogenated oils, sodium and fillers are the stars in this case. But potato chips, hot dogs and fruit snacks don’t have much going for them nutritionally.

“Try incorporating more fruits and vegetables,” says Brenda Kalchbrenner, registered dietitian at Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare. “If you are filling up on produce, automatically you’ll be consuming less unhealthy foods.”

Eat the rainbow The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate guidelines show Americans how to eat a balanced meal. Half the plate should be fruits and vegetables, a quarter lean proteins, another quarter whole grains and a serving of low-fat dairy on the side.

Eating a variety of fruits and vegetables — and a variety of colors — is best.

“If people could eat three colors a day, that would make a huge impact on their overall health,” says Allen.

Your daily goal should be 2 cups of fruit and 2 ½ cups of vegetables.

Superfoods include salmon and sardines, which contain omega-3s. This can lower your heart disease risk and help arthritis. Green tea contains anti-oxidants that have been shown to fight cancer.

Blueberries contain phytoflavinoids, antioxidants, potassium and vitamin C, which lower risk of heart disease and cancer.

Know your fats Most people who grab fat-free versions of foods think they are making healthier choices. Not so, says Kalchbrenner.

“We need some fat in our diet to absorb vitamins and keep us satisfied,” she said. “The key is eating the right kinds.”

Too much saturated and trans fats, like those found in beef, cheese and margarine, can raise your risk of heart disease by increasing cholesterol levels.

hen I first moved to Boulder in the mid-90s, I often felt the need to trek down to Denver for serious eats. But now that our fair city is gaining a well-earned reputation for fine dining, the need to travel has dwindled considerably.

Consistent with the old saw that a rising tide lifts all boats, eateries in every town in the county have also raised their game. Nowadays, it’s mostly unnecessary for county residents to venture beyond their particular city limits for a more than decent meal.

Case in point is Lafayette’s 95a Bistro and Sushi, located on Arapahoe, at the former site of the Magnolia Steakhouse. This contemporary and comfortable eatery features affordable lunches, including $9 burgers with shoestring fries, $12 lamb shank tortellini and a $10 squash agnolotti pasta plate. Dinner choices include some of the light- Susan France er lunch choices as well as an affordable $16 aged ribeye steak and a $15 red snapper garnished with brown butter, caramelized onions and roasted peppers.

There’s also a sushi bar, but on a recent chilly evening, friends Kon, Kathy and I decided to focus on the small plates, none of which

cost more than $7. When we arrived at around 5:30 p.m., a lively crowd had already filled the bar and dining room, perhaps speaking to 95a’s increasing popularity as a Lafayette gathering spot.

Craving guilty pleasures, Kathy expressed interest in the onion rings and frites, each available for $3.

While the onion rings’ breading was a bit heavy, the fries were thin, hot and crisp — in other words, just the way I like them. Potatoes

also put in an appealing appearance as the creamy foundation of a $7 braised pork dish. The only flaw with this home cooking style preparation was that I would have preferred more of this succulently tender meat.

I’ll admit to a hint of skepticism when our server recommended the $6 tempura, consisting of fried green chile peppers and avocado. Although I would have preferred a lighter batter, there was something compelling about the fried avocado that reminded me of combining a crisp chip and guacamole in one easy bite. The peppers didn’t register too much heat, which made for a compellingly savory but not tongue-burning nosh.

Clams and chorizo in broth comprised a $7 interpretation of a Portuguese favorite. The clams had a sensual texture without a hint of rubberiness, and there was no question these were fresh specimens. The chorizo sausage slices packed a peppery punch that complemented the vanilla smoothness of the seafood. Similarly priced pan-seared scallops were another oceanic winner, with clean flavor and just the right amount of searing to draw out sweetness and create a whisper of crust.

The $5 bacon-wrapped dates were compact numbers reminding me of the version served at Boulder’s defunct Triana. While these seemed smaller than the examples of my memory, these were conveniently pitted, and they nicely balanced sweet, salt and smoke.

When I was in graduate school, the Oasis Brewery was a popular spot for pool and The Kitchen nachos, and upscale splurges typically took place at Trios Grille near downtown. I remember getting in breakfast at the Last American Diner on 28th Street, as well as the upstairs location of Rocky Mountain Joe’s on the Pearl Street Mall. Long before The Kitchen showed up on West Pearl, Triana was a hip hot spot, noted for tapas.

A stout month

February will be Stout Month again at all three Mountain Sun pubs: Mountain and Southern Sun Pub & Breweries in Boulder, as well as Vine Street Pub in Denver.

Now in its 19th year, Stout Month features dozens of house stouts, including Oatimus Prime Imperial Oatmeal Stout, Megatron Imperial American Stout, Chocolate Dip Stout, Korova Cream Stout and Old School Irish Stout. The pubs will also be showcasing old favorites like Yonder Mountain Stout and the classic Thunder Head Stout.

Once again, they will be brewing a batch of Cherry Dip Stout, as well Coconut Cream Stout, Dark Harvest Pumpkin Stout and Bourbon Barrel Aged Stoked Oak. There is even a stout loaded full of hops: “Trickster Stout.”

Tuscan wine dinner at Arugula

On Jan. 24, Chef Alec Schuler of Arugula Bar e Ristorante and Sven Hedenas, executive chef of Tangerine, will present a wine dinner featuring classic wines from Tuscany.

The event, being held at Arugula (2785 Iris Ave. in Boulder) at 6:30 p.m., will begin with the most classic of Tuscan white wines, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, paired with Tuscan Style Smooth Chicken Liver Pate with blood orange, pistachio and frisee salad.

this treat, and while it’s not glamorous or something you might whip out to impress your foodie friends, it does the trick when you want something sweet.

The key is the apple. You want to use a Granny Smith, or something along those lines. Something tart that has a nice crunch to it. Of course the crunch goes away when you bake it, but starting out with a mushy apple is the kiss of death in baked apple land.

Trust me, I’ve been to that land. It’s no fun.

You’ve heard one bad apple spoils the bunch, and this land is full of soggy bad apples. It will turn you right back towards those pesky full of fat and sugar delights faster than you can say “I’m not Tebowing; I’m just tying my shoe.”

I love the combination of the cranberries and blueberries. Besides being darn pretty, they are full of anti-oxidants and provide the perfect amount of sweet paired with the apples. We are using a tad of sugar in this, but mainly adding the pop of sweet from honey.

Of course, you could make a delightful little crumble topping, but remember, we are going healthy in this here recipe.

So yummy toppings be damned! Enjoy this little recipe, and you are welcome for this healthy little treat to nourish your body and mind. Kum-ba-ya.

Now, follow the directions, put some love into it, and invite me over when it’s done.

Baked Blueberry Cranberry Apples 4 Granny Smith apples 3/4 cup fresh cranberries 1/2 cup blueberries 1 1/2 cups water 1/2 cup brown sugar 2 tbsp. honey 1 tsp. cinnamon Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Core the apples, leaving the very bottom intact. Peel the upper fourth of the apple.

Place in a baking dish (I used a 9-inch-by-9-inch baking pan) and stuff the apples with the cranberries and blueberries.

In small saucepan over medium/high heat, stir together the water, brown sugar, and honey until it boils.

Once it boils, pour over top of apples. Top each apple with cinnamon.

Bake for 50-60 minutes, basting a couple times with the juices. Take out. Serve warm or at room temperature. Enjoy!

Note: This is great with whipped cream, low-fat vanilla yogurt or low-fat vanilla ice cream.

Start with the dosa, a rice crepe served up with a pair of chutneys. The samosa chat features a potato and vegetable-stuffed turnover smothered with onion, cilantro and curry, and is a more than satisfying choice.

The Bhel Puri, a puffed rice, noodle and vegetable “trail mix,” is a citrusy counterpoint.

Graff, who made Camp and Bandslam, has a lot of plot to wrangle, and he does not waste time.

Vi and G.G. are a catfight waiting to happen, and when it does — in a restaurant where Vi works a second gig — dinner rolls are tossed, headlocks are initiated, and then later fences are mended and the choir heads to Los Angeles for the national Joyful Noise Competition. Their finale is a consider-

able one, listed in the credits as “The Higher Medley,” blending “I Want to Take You Higher,” “Forever,” “Yeah!” and “Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I’m Yours.”

The movie’s all right, if you can take its rampant artificiality — and I’m not even talking about Parton’s face yet.

Here’s what I liked. I liked Latifah’s rendition of the traditional spiritual “Fix Me Jesus,” sung when her character’s at a low point ( Jesse L. Martin plays her husband, away in the military), and the expression of yearning and sadness makes effective dramatic sense. It’s not a big moment, merely an honest one. Palmer’s a strong, steadily developing performer, but she can lay claim to only so much of this rangy, busy picture.

So, Parton’s face. Graff ’s script makes several, inevitable references to how many plastic surgery procedures G.G. has undergone. In her live appear-

ances, Parton’s the first to make fun of the relentless work she has had done, above and below the neck, as she has aged. (She turns 66 later this month.) But she didn’t get what she paid for; the top half of her face doesn’t seem to match up with the bottom half. It’s as if Parton did her latest work in a drivethrough (“Gimme the Leona Helmsley, with a side of Meg Ryan!”) in a hurry.

Audiences still adore Parton, for good reason: Her vocals hold up, and that 4-foot-11-inch frame remains like no other human’s, whatever the component parts. But the cast of Joyful Noise is dealing with adequate material, at best, and the noise is more dutiful than joyful.

It’s a pretty crazy and overstuffed story.

P

laying a reformed cargo smuggler sucked back into the game, Mark Wahlberg is the star of Contraband, a fairly entertaining remake of the 2008 Icelandic thriller Reykjavik-Rotterdam.

And a reliable star he is.

Audiences develop relationships with actors over time, through good scripts and bad; this one’s neither good nor bad, exactly. But Wahlberg has the presence, the glower and the laconic line readings to guide us through a mess of pain, painlessly.

The faces you remember in Contraband, however, belong to two of the more indelible character actors in modern movies — not the most versatile, but when the roles call for it, the skeeziest. Ben Foster, the shifty-eyed psycho in the 3:10 to Yuma remake, plays

the Wahlberg figure’s friend and partner in crime. A nasty drug lord, owed money by the protagonist’s hapless brother-in-law, is portrayed by Giovanni Ribisi.

Foster and Ribisi beady-eyeing everybody in the same picture! It’s almost more weaseling than one picture can take.

The earlier film’s settings were Reykjavik and Rotterdam; director Baltasar Kormakur’s remake goes for New Orleans and Panama (largely with New Orleans masquerading as Panama). A botched smuggling job lands the brother-in-law on the wrong side of Briggs (Ribisi), forcing Farraday (Wahlberg) into a contraband job involving counterfeit bills to be fetched in Panama and hidden, somewhere, on the

cargo ship back up to Louisiana. Kate Beckinsale is Farraday’s wife, who gets roughed up pretty badly in Contraband.

The low-level strengths of the picture, its stripped-down budget and rough-edged milieu, are brought out and then undercut by Kormakur’s penchant for hand-held telephoto lensing and jib-jab cutting. The technique is in the interest of you-are-there immediacy and tension, but before long the camera movements play like tics and affectation. It’s a pretty crazy and overstuffed story anyway, though Wahlberg acquits himself forcefully and well. And yet Farraday’s just another piece of plot. Maybe we all are. But movies like Contraband aren’t really into existentialism; they’re about what happens when twitchy, raging character men like Foster and Ribisi, along with stalwart under-player J.K. Simmons as the cargo ship’s dour captain, go up against a movie star assured enough to make a little something out of not much.

Purslane is a plant that’s also known colloquially as pigweed.

It’s hearty, prolific, and spreads fast. In a short time, it can grow out-of-control, covering a large area with a thick carpet. On the other hand, it’s a tasty salad green and has a long history of being used as a cooked vegetable. As a medicinal herb, it’s also quite useful, being rich in omega-3 fatty acids as well as a number of vitamins and minerals. Moral of the story: Keep pigweed contained — don’t let it grow out of control — and it will be your friend. Does anything in your life fit that description?

“It is respectable to have no illusions — and safe — and profitable and dull,” said author Joseph Conrad.
