Highroad Is more technology the answer to too much technology?

W

e humans have got to get a whole lot smarter, says Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla automobiles and CEO of SpaceX rockets.

Musk is not merely reacting to humanity’s recent tendency to elect lunatics to lead our countries. Rather, he’s trying to warn us about the rapid rise of a radical new technology: Artificial intelligence. In common parlance, he’s referring to robots, but these are not the clunky, somewhat cute

machines performing rote tasks.

AI essentially has evolved to become an electronic brain — a web of evermore-complex supercomputers interacting as one cognitive unit that can program itself, make decisions and act independently of the humans who’re creating them. These thinking machines are rapidly increasing in number and geometrically advancing their IQ, prompting Musk and others to view AI technologies in apocalyptic terms. As algorithms and systems inevitably grow more sophisticated, he says, “digital intelligence will exceed biological intelligence by a substantial margin.”

of beings that will end up dominating humanity, becoming “an immortal dictator from which we would never escape.”

What’s weird is not his dystopian prognosis (other experts confirm that runaway bot intelligence is a real threat), but his solution. The way for us human beings to compete with AI says Musk, is to merge with it — not a corporate transaction, but a literal merger: Surgically implant AI devices in human brains with “a bunch of tiny wires” that would fuse people with super intelligence.

Uh-huh... and what could go wrong with that? It’s good to have technological geniuses alert us to looming dangers, but maybe the larger community of humanists ought to lead the search for answers.

emocrats now control the Colorado House, Senate and governor’s mansion, and that will likely turn out to be a real nightmare for the establishment wing of the party.

It reminds me of the dilemma crooked promoters in the oil patch find themselves in when they accidentally hit oil.

Let me explain.

You see, there have always been legitimate oil companies and promoters and then there are the other kind. The other kind make money by doing things like overselling interests in oil wells to doctors, trust funders and other wellhealed folks. I even knew of one old guy who took his drilling proposals into churches and got the congregations to pony up by convincing them God was going to use black gold to reward them a hundred-fold for their faith. Yep, oil can be one sleazy business.

The scam worked like this: The unscrupulous promoter would buy a cheap and presumably worthless oil and gas lease in the middle of nowhere.

He’d then propose a shallow (read cheap to drill) well on that lease. Let’s say for the sake of example and easy math, the promoter could poke a shallow hole in the ground for $500,000.

What he’d do is sell out 300 percent of the well. That’s to say he’d sell a onetenth interest in the well for 50K to 30 people. Then he’d go drill a dry hole and put a million dollars in his pocket.

The scam worked great. Each of the 30 investors who never knew each other existed would just write off their 50K expense and the crooked promoter would bank his profit and start looking for his next bunch of marks. There was really only one way that these guys ever got caught and that’s when they accidentally hit oil. If they actually made an unexpected discovery they had to start paying out their investors and that’s

when 10 percent would suddenly turn into 3 percent and the lawyer’s phones would start ringing.

I know, you’re thinking what’s this got to do with Democrats?

Well, political parties have a tendency to work a lot like crooked promoters. For example, take how the Dems are now operating in Congress or how the Republicans did things with Obama in the White House. Nancy Pelosi and the Dems in the U.S. House are talking all progressive like the next incarnation of FDR or one of those Kennedy boys. And you can bet they’ll be sending the Republicancontrolled Senate every kind of progressive legislation they can dream up; environmental protections, end the government shutdown legislation, campaign finance reform proposals, forgiveness of college debt bills, maybe even an improvement on health care like single payer, and let’s not forget new gun laws on top of all that. But in the end, we’ll get stuck with the status quo again.

I just hope you, their intended patsies, see this oil-patch-type scam for what it is. They send along such legislation because they know as long as Republicans control the Senate and White House it can’t pass, and therefore they don’t have to worry about upsetting their corporate and billionaire donor base by actually creating progressive change. They go through this pretend process so we voters will think Democrats really want significant change and therefore vote for them come 2020.

I know it sounds pretty cynical, but think about it. This cycle has been repeating itself for decades now.

Ask yourself this; when Dems controlled the House, the Senate and the White House just a few years back, did they push through any of these progres-

sive things when they had the votes to actually pass them? No, they did not.

And if Dems should take control of Congress and the White House in 2020, the one thing you can count on is that all these progressive pieces of legislation will either disappear or get severely watered down.

Same thing with Republicans.

Before they got control of everything they actually took 70 votes to repeal the ACA knowing that Obama would just veto their efforts and that they didn’t have the votes to override him.

But when they actually won control of everything in 2016, they didn’t pass any of the things they’d promised like repealing the ACA, building a wall or balancing the budget. But now that control of Congress is once again split, they are once again talking a big game knowing it will go nowhere and they can blame the other side.

Point being, all the posturing and deception practiced by both parties in order to keep their corporate cash flowing while fooling their poorly informed base of constituents works perfectly well until they accidentally hit oil, which in the political realm equates to taking control of both chambers and the executive branch. That’s when the truth is exposed and it’s never pretty.

Speaking of unscrupulous promoters hitting oil, let’s talk Colorado.

First, just a little reminder from the scientific community: We only have 11 years left to radically transform all aspects of our culture in order to stop climate change from running its terrifying and destructive course. Once the permafrost has melted to a certain point, global warming feeds itself and can’t be reversed.

We basically have a decade to do the right thing or we’re done.

It would be nearly impossible to turn the tide even if we stopped using all oil, gas and coal tomorrow. And trust me, with our current political leadership on every level from the president to Congress to the governor to the State House to our county and city leaders playing the politically expedient game of incrementalism, that isn’t going to happen.

I swear if I hear another politician blather on about how they support a ban on fracking or a 2,500-foot setback or the Martinez vs. COGCC case that

argued for placing public health and the environment above oil profits while making excuses for why they can’t pass laws to that effect even when they control everything, I’m just going to stick my head through the noose and kick the chair out from under me. Which is just my way of saying our elected leaders need to either shut up or do something substantive about global warming right now.

I don’t know about you, but it sure seemed to me that all the Democrats running for office in this state during the last election cycle were talking about climate change, renewables and their disdain for oil and gas extraction in neighborhoods and near homes and schools. So now that the election is over and Democrats won, are we finally going to see all the progressive environmental legislation we were promised?

Are Dems going to pass that 2,500 foot setback that the state Democratic Party endorsed before the election, or was that endorsement just a rouse to pull in the progressive wing of the party? Will we finally see a bill that lets communities decide if they want to be poisoned or not by the oil industry? I mean, nearly all Dem candidates said they supported some level of community control when they were asking for our votes.

Or how about a ban on fracking?

Some went so far as to promise that. Or at the very least can we change the wording in our Constitution to require that wells can’t be drilled until they can prove they won’t cause damage to human health or the environment, as was the intention behind the Martinez case?

I’m not holding my breath here folks. Sadly, I suspect Colorado’s blue wave means the establishment Dems accidentally hit oil.

I fear now that they control everything, they will be exposed as posers when it comes to oil and gas and the health of the public and the environment. Sure, we’ll hear the words “clean energy” and “renewables” darn near daily for the next few years. Dems may even toss in a few Hickenlooper-style imaginary protections like new and improved air regs that sound good but fail to improve air quality. (Note to see DYERTIMES Page 7

math-challenged Dems: If you decrease poison emissions by 10 percent per well while doubling the number of wells, the air quality gets worse not better.) Or maybe Dems will pass a bill that says it’s illegal to blow up homes during the oil and gas extraction process unless such explosion prevention would make drilling less profitable. The Colorado Supreme Court pretty much just wrote that one in its Martinez decision.

If you’re not sure if a Dem proposal is real or just another incremental placebo, here’s a quick test: if it’s tied to some far-off date like 2040, 2050 or my personal favorite, by the turn of the century, it’s a placebo. By the time we realize we didn’t hit those deadlines the scoundrels who kicked the can down the road and thereby let the planet die will have long ago left office.

In the last two weeks, the Martinez decision has been struck down by Colorado’s Hickenlooper-stacked Supreme Court and the Executive Committee of the Boulder County Democrats voted against a resolution to support a ban on fracking citing an excuse that sounded something like “a ban might have potentially created possible conflict or maybe shown prejudice that could have given an impression that might have been negative considering it maybe, woulda, coulda had an influence on other stuff we’re trying or might someday try to slow extraction...” blah, blah, blah, etc.

It would have been quicker if they’d just said “we vote no because it would piss off the Democratic party’s establishment wing headed by our new governor and a handful of billionaire donors who all like fracking.”

If you haven’t yet, you really should read the pro-oil-industry Supreme Court’s decision on the Martinez case.

It actually says that we can’t put the public’s health ahead of oil industry profits if doing so would make the extraction process less cost effective.

Think about that. They just ruled that some folks will just have to get cancer so oil companies don’t have to spend more money to produce their earthdestroying hydrocarbons. I swear it feels like we live in some backassward banana republic sometimes.

Our courts and many of our politicians including Democrats are now operating fully detached from the best science on climate change. Whether it’s Trumpism’s total disregard for environmental regulations or Democrats’ half measures that still allow for death by a thousand cuts, any proposals put forward by any party that don’t attempt to

So, is there any hope?

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Martinez case, State Senator Mike Foote put out a statement containing the following: “While I am disappointed in the decision, it gives us at the legislature an opportunity to finally put health and safety first with oil and gas operations.

It is well beyond time for us to protect Coloradans and our clean air and water.

I am confident that my colleagues and I will come forward with legislation to do exactly that.”

I’m obviously not as confident in his party as Senator Foote seems to be, but I do appreciate his statement and I sincerely hope he can make it happen. I hope Dem party leaders use their newfound power to do the right thing this time around and not work behind the scenes as they have done in the past to undermine serious attempts to protect human health and the environment via serious oil and gas regulation. All I can say is Lord help the Dems if such political maneuvering ever comes to light again... and it will come to light.

The people of Colorado are watching, so please don’t try to pacify us with compromise and incrementalism that in the end accomplishes nothing but to create a sound bite for the next election cycle.

The days of Dems shouting “save the planet” while passing their hat to pipeline companies, LNG export terminal owners, the oil and gas industry and Big Greens funded by supporters of natural gas need to be over. And yes, taking money from a green-sounding nonprofit funded by pro-oil money is the same as taking oil money. How stupid do you think we are? I take that back: You got elected doing just that, so too many of us are still too stupid. But I also believe that’s changing for the better.

I hope the Democrats’ actions over the past couple of weeks — and yes, we do get wind of what goes on behind closed doors at the capitol — are not indicative of what’s to come. Loyalty to a political party and its major donors is a lousy reason for elected officials to sit on their ass and watch the planet our kids are supposed to inherit be destroyed.

So, stop talking and start doing. If you don’t, it will be proof that the words and promises of the Democratic Party are just another oil-patch scam.

Trump and the shutdown: The return of the honey badger

on’t be surprised if Trump gets himself a bust of Ulysses Grant to go with the bust of Andrew Jackson he keeps in the Oval Office. And maybe one of Margaret Thatcher, too.

At the height of the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House, one of the bloodiest and most violent battles of the Civil War (in mid-May 1864) Grant wrote to Lincoln that he intended “to fight it out on this line if it takes all summer.” In the end it took him 11 months to finish off Lee and the Confederacy, but he never let up.

Thatcher’s greatest domestic fight was over the power of the British labor movement. The “line” she fought it out on was a confrontation with British coal miners over the closure of moneylosing mines and the privatization of Britian’s nationalized coal industry. It took her a year, during which she hemorrhaged support in the polls, but she won — and won re-election two years later.

When it comes to the current partial government shutdown, I think Trump is thinking in terms of a Grant/ Thatcher sort of timeline — a confrontation that could go on for months, not the days or at most weeks that Pelosi, Schumer, and the right coast press anticipate.

Pelosi and Schumer think the current shutdown will play out the way previous ones did — with the party responsible for it caving after a couple of weeks.

cave on the shutdown as political pressure builds. Apart from the fact that it doesn’t seem to be building much except inside the Beltway, the Democrats are missing the fact that Trump doesn’t view the current shutdown trough the same political lens they do.

Most previous shutdowns were about money. When the issue is money it’s relatively easy to fashion compromises. But this shutdown is different.

In this shutdown money is secondary.

This one is about core values and worldview.

Trump is looking at it the same way Margaret Thatcher looked at her fight with the coal miners’ union — a political struggle that must be won, even if it has to be fought out on the same battle-line all summer or all year or the next election, polling and torpedoes be damned.

The most important thing to know about Donald Trump is that his first political priority is keeping his promises. I think it became his first priority during the 2016 campaign when he started campaigning in flyover country and discovered that people out there were not only taking him seriously and treating his ideas with respect, but were putting their hopes and aspirations in his hands. Chances are that never happened to him before. And when it did, he forged the sort of political bond and social contract with the people who make up his base that’s transformative to a candidate. see DANISH PLAN Page 9

As a result he will fight to deliver the wall regardless of what the polls say and how much caterwauling and snark is pumped out by the Beltway insiders and media.

The Washington press corps has been telling us for months how energized the Democratic base is. Fair enough, but Trump’s stand is energizing both the Republicans and the latter day Reagan Democrats he’s brought into the Republican tent as well. The wall was his premier promise in the campaign.

If he caves on it he will lose his base, and he knows it.

Trump won by being Bullworth, the fictional politician in the film of the same name who suddenly started saying exactly what he thought, and by being the political incarnation of the honey badger, the critter who comes on relentlessly and never quits, even when ankle deep in vipers. Kinda’ like Grant and Thatcher.

Trump has another advantage in this fight as well: The American people are rapidly getting their fill of the Democrats’ political correctness and identity politics. They’ve called so many people racists and sexists that the slurs are losing their power to intimidate, let alone persuade.

Schumer and Pelosi didn’t do themselves any favors with their televised rebuttal to Trump’s speech on Tuesday, Jan. 8. They looked like they had been

made up by a just-OK embalmer, and so did their narrative. They talked process and lost the process argument.

Trump talked values and won the values argument. He won it with one thought: People don’t build walls around their homes because they hate the people outside; they build them because they love the people inside.

It’s telling that the Democrats’ narrative has focused almost exclusively on the shutdown and what it’s doing to the affected government workers and the services they provide. They don’t want to talk about the thing Trump shut down the government over — border security and the wall. That’s because the deeper one goes into the Democrats’ approach to immigration the more disingenuous it appears.

Schumer called Trump’s speech on the border wall a tantrum. That’s pretty rich coming from the leader of a party that rebranded itself as the resistance (instead of the loyal opposition) the day after the 2016 election. The Democrats have been throwing a nonstop tantrum ever since. And now Schumer has the chutzpah to claim Trump is throwing a tantrum because he’s playing by their rules. As they do say in Washington, what goes around comes around.

letters Danish wrong about desalination In “How to increase Colorado’s (and Arizona’s) water supply,” (Re: The Danish Plan, Jan. 3, 2019) Paul Danish proposes supplying water beyond what exists in the Colorado River Basin by building a constellation of desalination plants in California. Danish’s “plan,” if you apply his own numbers, is for California taxpayers to spend about $4 billion just to build facilities to desalinate 10 percent of their water, never mind ongoing operating costs.

Desalinated water is super-expensive; its production is astoundingly wasteful of energy. Congratulations to Paul for suggesting the most complicated, expensive and wasteful way imaginable to generate water! But in fairness, he has thought of an excellent way to pump billions of dollars from taxpayers’ pockets to mega-corporations. Bravo!

Here are the idea’s worst aspects: First, and fatally, a large percentage of Boulder Weekly

residential water goes onto lawns.

Boulder, for example, fills an entire pipeline, the Gravity Line, every summer just for lawn demand. If residential water were desalinated, it would be the same as building and running a manufacturing constellation largely to water lawns. Second Bravo!

The other problem is that we need to be generating less energy from fossil fuels, not more. Unless Danish’s putative plants would be nuclear- or solarpowered, their development would exacerbate global roasting. Third Bravo!

Here’s a way better, simpler, cheaper plan: Use a fraction of the money that would go into Danish’s corporate welfare proposal to just buy out millions of lawns and xeriscape them. Save the water, money and the energy that would otherwise be wasted. Let the hydrological cycle do its own job, for free. And “plan” to live within our means, water-wise.

With the Forest Service scheduled to shut down areas to firearm shooting, two outdoor gun ranges could be coming to Boulder County

ere’s the problem: People are allowed to shoot firearms in the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, but homeowners and recreationalists complain about noise and blight, and everyone, including the shooters themselves, are concerned about safety.

So five years into the process of trying to get fewer people shooting guns in the forests, a group of federal and local authorities, including Boulder County and the U.S. Forest Service are beginning to zero in on a solution: build gun ranges out of the forest, near population centers.

In exchange for closing off nearly one-fifth of the 1.4 million acres that comprise Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests to recreational shooting, the Forest Service, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and Boulder, Larimer, Gilpin and Clear Creek Counties (collectively known as Northern Front Boulder Weekly

Range Recreational Sport Shooting Management Partnership and herein referred to as the Partnership) are looking to site several ranges throughout Northern Colorado to accommodate displaced shooters.

Boulder County has two potential sites for shooting ranges at the moment: an expansion of the current Boulder Rifle Club range in North Boulder, which is open, mostly, only to private members, and a new range at the Cemex quarry near Lyons. The other counties in the Partnership are also working to locate range sites.

Though it represents a solution to the problem posed by dispersed shooting in the forests, communities near the potential ranges have expressed concern about noise, wildlife disruption and water contamination from spent lead bullets.

“Sound [reverberates] around here very differently than it does in a flat area,” Sullivan said. “If [a range] comes here and it doesn’t work, we will have created a very serious problem.”

Sullivan’s comments allude to perhaps the biggest issues with the Boulder County ranges: will shooters actually leave the forests for the ranges, and will the Forest Service be able to enforce the new no-shooting regulations?

“Overwhelmingly the shooters that come to [Partnership] meetings are more interested in a built range than dispersed shooting in the forests,” Sanfaçon says. “They don’t feel safe in the forest because they don’t know if the guy next to them is a safe shooter or not. Most of the shooters that we ran into said, ‘Yes, we want a range,’ and right now, there is no public range in Boulder County.”

County Commissioner Deb Gardner told the Trustees at the December meeting that she’s been working with Forest Service Supervisor Monte Williams about what that agency can do to beef up enforcement in the forests.

“Monte is asking for additional budget money from the Forest Service specifically for enforcement,” Gardner said.

“It would be for signage, multiple signs for the same spot because we know they’ll get taken down and shot up and we’ll need to replace them, and additional officers that would be able to work that enforcement piece.

[Williams] won’t sign the agreement for the closures unless he has that money.”

And, Sanfaçon says, the demand for ranges is there, regardless of the forest shooting changes. There are hundreds on the waitlists at the Boulder Rifle Club and Erie’s Green Mill Sportsman’s Club. The Boulder Rifle Club received a grant last year to begin studying the feasibility and costs of expanding its location to allow for public shooting lanes.

Boulder Rifle Club, which is suing the city over its assault weapons ban passed last year, declined to comment for this story and referred us to their lawyer, who did not respond to requests for comment.

The Partnership is still exploring other areas in Boulder County for a range, but Sanfaçon says the idea is to have one available to those in the southern part of the county, and one in the north. What makes both sites appealing is that they’re both within 30 minutes of population hubs, but close enough to the forest so shooters won’t have to travel farther than they were before the closures.

No matter what sites are chosen, the process to expand or build a shooting range, or ranges, in Boulder County will be long. The County will have to issue a special use permit for any project, which will then have to pass through the Planning Commission and the Board of Commissioners. Sanfaçon adds that community members in both Boulder and Lyons will have the opportunity to weigh in on concerns before any permit is issued.

E

very winter since 2011, when Ross Williamson bought his south Boulder home, he’s struggled to keep warm.

“I couldn’t get it above 65 in here, and in addition to that I was paying [up to] $300 a month in the middle of the winter to be freezing,” Williamson tells Boulder Weekly from the tidy kitchen of his 1,500-square-foot home.

Frustrated with shedding heat and cash during the cold season, Williamson, a software engineer, decided to do something about it.

Economically and environmentally conscious, he scheduled an energy audit along with a blower test to find leakage points. He opted for all of the recommended measures, spending thousands on airsealing and reinsulating the attic, replacing three large windows with double-paned glass, and installing double honeycomb blinds.

When he still couldn’t warm up, he accepted that his electric baseboard heating was the culprit and investigated his options.

Seven out of 10 Coloradans use natural gas for their primary heating, but the energy source wasn’t an option for Williamson, as Xcel Energy hadn’t installed gas lines on his side of the street. Propane was too expensive and he had no desire to deal with the hassle of refilling tanks.

Many of his neighbors burn wood, however he didn’t like the idea of constantly filling a stove with cordwood or pellets, nor did he feel good about further reducing the already compromised local air

quality.

Indeed, studies have found residential woodburning to be responsible for significantly increasing levels of airborne particulate matter, pollutants smaller in diameter than a human hair that can lodge deep inside the lungs — even enter the bloodstream and organs — causing chronic bronchitis, non-fatal heart attacks and premature death, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Therefore, the only conventional heating option left for Williamson was ditching combustion altogether and installing a heat pump. Ground source heat pumps, which use the consistent temperature of the ground to heat and cool, come with a daunting price tag as high as $30,000. He settled on the relatively affordable air source heat pump instead.

An air source heat pump is made up of a compressor and two copper tubing coils — one inside and one outside — surrounded by aluminum fins to transfer heat. When heating, liquid refrigerant in the outside coils sucks heat from the air and evaporates it into a gas. Inside, the coils emit heat from the refrigerant as it condenses back into liquid form. For cooling, the direction of the refrigerant flow is reversed. Just plug it in and it gets the job done.

Air source heat pumps have been employed in the U.S. for decades, but until recently the technology wasn’t sufficient to use effectively in colder climates like Colorado. Now, mostly thanks to Japanese imports, heat pumps are a viable option anywhere in the country.

Heat pumps are also very efficient, delivering up to “three times more heat energy to a home than the electrical energy it consumes,” according to the U.S. Department of Energy, since it just moves heat around rather than generating it from a fuel.

“These things are basically maintenance free,” Williamson adds. “They just work.”

home, he enjoys the room-to-room control. He’s also pleased with how it draws less humidity out of the air compared to forced air, a bonus during Colorado arid winters.

But if heat pumps are so great, then why doesn’t everyone have them? As with many environmentally friendly energy alternatives, cost is a major barrier.

For his two Mitsubishi units, totaling 48,000 BTUs, Williamson dropped $15,000 (though there are cheaper models on the market). Granted, he’s got more capacity than he needs since he doesn’t heat his two extra bedrooms.

However, if he wanted to heat his entire house with the same model, he’d need to spend another $8-9,000.

“This is a small house and $25,000 to heat the whole house, that’s just kind of insane,” he says.

On the other hand, his electricity bills are almost half of what they were with baseboard heating, and that’s keeping his house at 72 degrees all the time. What’s more, he cools his place for as low as $40 per month over the summer.

As environmentally beneficial as heat pumps are, there aren’t many government incentives for purchasing and installing them, though the federal government offers a $300 Energy Star tax credit while Boulder County provides a $250 rebate.

And it’s unclear whether subsidies will increase any time soon, as pushing for heat pumps isn’t on the agenda of most environmental groups, few of which even acknowledge this alternative to fossil fuels and wood heating.

Surprisingly, a search for “heat pumps” on the 350.org website, the world’s leading climate advocacy organization and a strong opponent of fracking, doesn’t bring up a single result.

As long as natural gas prices remain low, few Coloradans are likely

to transition away from the controversial fossil fuel in favor of the cleaner, but pricier heat pumps.

“If natural gas were to get a lot more expensive, then [heat pumps] would look a lot more appealing,” Williamson says. “But then your electricity prices would increase as well.”

Which brings us to the mastodon in the room when it comes to heat pumps... reliance on an electric grid, which in Colorado runs primarily on fossil fuels: 66 percent coal and 17 percent natural gas, to be exact.

In fact, Williamson wonders whether running his heat pumps on electricity generated from a fossil fuels plant — such as Xcel Energy’s natural gas-burning Cherokee Generating Station outside of Denver — may actually be more wasteful due to the energy lost at the facility and through transmission lines compared to simply combusting the gas at home at 95 percent efficiency.

One way around this quandary is to install solar photovoltaics to generate the electricity you need to run the heat pump. However, Williamson’s back-of-the-envelope calculation determined he’d need to spend another $30,000 to do so.

Even then, heat pumps wouldn’t be entirely off the hook thanks to the refrigerant, known as R-410A, which contains fluorine. While it won’t deplete the ozone the way earlier forms of refrigerants have done, the EPA calls fluorinated gases “the most potent and longest lasting type of greenhouse gases emitted by human activities.”

With all of these factors in mind, selecting the greenest way to heat your home is a bit like picking your poison.

Maybe President Jimmy Carter was right 40 years ago when he advised the nation to just turn down the thermostat and put on a sweater.

WRAPPING MEANING IN FUN As immersive art explodes, the Museum of Outdoor Art offers an introspective experience in ‘Natura Obscura’

he lobby of the Museum of Outdoor Arts (MOA) in Englewood is bright with natural light, but a few steps past the ticket counter, inside the museum’s immersive exhibit, Natura Obscura, is a crepuscular woodland of luminescent pinks, purples and blues.

Owls hoot over the sound of running water. Fantastic creatures peak around trees to catch a glimpse of you. Beneath your feet, Mother Nature greets you from the floor, her eyes pupil-less white voids. It’s her third eye that stares at you as she reaches forward with her index fingers and thumbs touching, the universe nestled in the space between her hands.

She’s offering you a chance to see the divine, to pry open your third eye, as you make your way through this surrealist nature exhibition.

“We are all about harnessing art to transform how people look at themselves and the world in some way,” says Eric Jaenike, cofounder and president of Prismajic, the Denver-based event design and production company that teamed up with MOA to cre-

Jennifer Mosquera, spent five years learning the ropes of immersive event building for corporate clients (Microsoft, Chase, The Ritz-Carlton) under the name Artistry Events and Design. In early 2017, Jaenike says he and Mosquera felt like they had the experience they needed to follow their own artistic vision, so they sold off all of Artistry’s assets and founded Prismajic.

Their collaboration with MOA was just around the corner. MOA was on the hunt for a group they could collaborate with on a nature-themed immersive exhibit. The MOA staff visited Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, and immersive theater events in Denver, like Sweet & Lucky and Broken Bone Bathtub, to form a foundation for the kind of immersive event they wanted to create.

“MOA has always experimented with newer, cutting-edge kind of things,” says Tim Vacca, MOA’s director of programs. “We’ve done a lot of different events and exhibitions in the past that were maybe pushing the boundaries.”

Like Creatura Psychedelica, a pneumatic sculpture installation by San Francisco-based artist Bill Kennedy that spent last summer at Fiddler’s Green. Or MOA’s changing diorama series at Marjorie Park. Or Element House in New Mexico, a home designed to operate off the grid, the structure of which is derived from the

If you’ve never heard of MOA, Vacca’s not surprised; the organization has “kind of flown under the radar for a while” because most of its programming is free to the community.

“With Meow Wolf happening... well, it’s been happening for a long time,” Vacca says of the emergence of immersive arts experiences like Natura.

“Look at Disneyland. We just all love the idea of coming into a space that completely changes your environment.”

It just so happened that Prismajic had created a 400-square-foot protoNatura exhibition in their Denver studio space.

When the MOA team visited, Vacca says it was a “perfect fit.”

Prismajic became MOA’s artist-inresidence in the summer of 2018, leading a group of 10 emerging artists — some local, some from out of state — in MOA’s Design and Build program (the rare paid internship that can also earn college credit), which aided in the creation of Natura. ianist Garrick Ohlsson has, at last count, at least 80 concertos in his repertoire.

Yes, eight-zero, 80. “It’s absolutely possible,” Ohlsson says. “It’s probably more by now, but it doesn’t mean that I play them all, all the time.”

He admits that there are fewer than 10 that he could play at the drop of a hat — one of which, Rachmaninoff ’s First Piano Concerto, he will perform with the Boulder Philharmonic and conductor Michael Butterman on Saturday ( Jan. 19) in Boulder and Sunday ( Jan. 20) in Federal Heights.

Other works on the all-Russian program will be Alexander Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia and Sergei Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony.

Ohlsson has not visited Boulder recently, but he played at the Colorado Music Festival in the 1980s and ’90s.

And there are other Boulder connections: He has performed with CU’s Takács Quartet and will be playing with them on an upcoming tour. And later in the year he and the quartet will record works for a piano quintet by Edward Elgar and Amy Beach.

At the same time, Butterman hears a darker side to the symphony. “The first theme from the opening movement has a stretching, searching quality to it,” he says. “There’s a darkness to the piece, [with] a lot of low-frequency accents, and the tuba has a big role to play. “[Prokofiev] had been lured back to the Soviet Union, and I wonder if he was already beginning to see that his horizons were going to be severely curtailed.” If so, the feeling was prescient: The composer was later censured by Stalin and spent the last years of his life as a virtual non-person.

The concert opener, Borodin’s In the Steppes of Central Asia, connects to both the Russian theme of the concert and the “open space” theme of the Phil’s season. “It’s a lovely work, a beautiful, very simple tone poem,” Butterman says.

“I love the beginning of it. It’s just this high harmonic in the strings, the aural equivalent of a haze. From that emerges an appealing theme, and then the clip-clop of camel hooves, as the caravan approaches. I think anybody who likes Borodin’s ‘Polovtsian Dances’ or anything by Rimsky-Korsakov is going to enjoy this piece.

Museum of Boulder to host a film and discussion series on the immigrant experience by Michael J. Casey

hat does “becoming American” mean to you? Is it a process?

A state of mind? An act of participation?

When one becomes American, what’s more important: the destination or the journey?

That’s both the title and the central theme behind the six-week documentary film and discussion series debuting at the Museum of Boulder on Jan. 22: Becoming American.

MR MAJESTYK’S 8-TRACK REVIVAL larly violence against immigrant communities. His 2017 scholastic book, Lynching of Mexicans in the Texas Borderlands, covers racial-tension along the southern U.S. border during the 1910 Mexican Revolution with topics and concerns as familiar as today’s headlines.

“The sound bites are the same,” Villanueva says. “A hundred years later — literally a hundred years later from some of the chapters I have in this book to today — we’re experiencing the same xenophobic rhetoric, the same call to arms on the border and the detaining of immigrants on the border.”

Though Villanueva will focus on more than the Latin American experience, he is quick to note these stories echo across the chasm of history.

“The criminalization of an ethnic group — or a larger group: an ethnic category — is occurring today in similar ways it occurred throughout the 20th century,” Villanueva says. “When it comes down to it, the dominant group of people in power fears any loss of that power.

“And I wouldn’t say it’s losing it,” Villanueva continues. “It’s sharing it.”

But, as Villanueva is quick to point out, sharing and loss mean different things to different people.

“It depends on how you look at it,” he says.

How you look at it is precisely the purpose behind Becoming American.

Here is a chance to understand the present through the prism of the past, a view all too often ignored by those fixated on the now.

In the late 1970s, Tim O’Brien, Pete Wernick, Nick Forster and Charles Sawtelle helped usher in a new way of thinking about bluegrass that invited people from all over the world to participate and contribute with Hot Rize.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Motus Theater is premiering UndocMonologues, a unique multimedia performance featuring powerful stories from the heart by undocumented community leaders on the frontline of U.S. immigration policy.

Ten undocumented leaders will share their own stories, in their own words, covering a variety of themes: the pain of being categorized as a criminal; losing family to deportation; the challenge of attending college without documentation; and being rejected by the country in which you were raised. The first show is at 3 p.m. and features a musical performance by Teresita Lozano. The 3 p.m. show is free to families (age 10 and up) on a first come, first served basis.

The 6 p.m. show features jazz great Robert Johnson who will offer a musical response to these powerful stories. The 6 p.m. performance is a ticketed event.

BEATLES VS. STONES — A MUSICAL SHOWDOWN. 8 P.M. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 23, BOULDER THEATER, 2032 14TH ST., BOULDER, 303-786-7030.

The legendary melodies of arguably two of the most influential music bands in history are coming together for a showdown at Boulder Theater. Satisfaction, a Rolling Stones tribute band, will face off against the Fab Four tribute band Abbey Road. This event is open to all ages, however, children under the age of 15 are advised to have a parental guardian accompany them.

Tickets range from $25 to $55 and are available for purchase online, over the phone, or at the door. Federal employees may receive two complementary tickets with a valid government ID. —Lenah Reda

The Second City sparked a comedic revolution when it opened its doors in Chicago on a snowy Tim Schmidt December night in 1959.

This small theater group grew larger and larger over the years, eventually becoming a paragon for experimental improvisational theater.

Not only has the Second City gained recognition as an Emmy-award winning, world-class entertainment company, it’s also become an incubator for superstar talent such as Steve Carell, Mike Myers and Tina Fey. Megan Babbe, Alison Banowsky, EJ Cameron, Vernon Mina, Jordan Savusa, Jackie Southee, Fernando Alvarez, Jeff Strickland and Jeff Griggs will form the Second City Touring Company. Tickets range from $20 to $35.

n 2010, Matt Green, a Virginia native and New York City resident, learned there were two Rockaway Beaches: the Queens neighborhood popularized by the Ramones in their 1977 single and one located 3,000 miles away in Oregon. Tired of a desk job and looking for an excuse to visit his brother in Chicago, Green packed a large stroller full of supplies and began walking. Five months later, Green strolled into Rockaway Beach, Oregon, with the northern United States under his belt. He was 29.

But 3,000 miles wasn’t enough, and Green wanted to keep walking. His new goal: New York City; every street, bridge and park in the five boroughs. It’ll take years and cover over 8,500 miles, but with a smile on his face and a flair for the wonder, Green laces up day after day to explore the city he calls home.

“Are you independently wealthy?” one New Yorker brusquely asks after Green explains his project.

“I’m independently homeless,” Green responds with a grin.

No, Green is not wealthy — he lives on roughly $15 a day, couch surfing and cat sitting as he goes — but yes, as you can see in Jeremy Workman’s documentary, The World Before Your Feet, Green does benefit from certain entitlements. Neither Green nor Workman state it explicitly in the doc but Workman wisely includes an interview with Jamaican-born Garnette Cadogan, a fellow walker, who explains the pains he takes not to appear threatening or incur hostility on his walks. But Cadogan is black, and Green is not. And Green can, and does, walk up to everybody he sees with an extended hand and a happy grin. Some are fascinated, others need a few minutes to be won over, but the results are always the same: Green is a charmer.

What is Green’s purpose with the walk? It’s unclear, even to him. There is a corresponding blog — imjustwalking.com — where Green posts a myriad of pictures and a wealth of research. He’s still working his way through a vast backlog of material, which doesn’t amount to a book or anything Green can monetize.

“I don’t think there’s a whole lot of commercial use to it,” he tells Workman’s camera with a shrug.

The World Before Your Feet is both delightful and invigorating. It’s the kind of documentary that makes you want to lace up those sneakers and discover all the majesty just around the corner. And though Workman never explains what drew him to Green in the first place, it really isn’t necessary. To borrow again from White’s Here is New York, it’s that third New Yorker, the settler, who gives the city passion.

Green is all passion.

hey say when it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, and we figure that’s why pub food tends to revolve around the same carbheavy favorites — French fries, street tacos, popcorn — guaranteed to please (and maybe sober up) patrons. The folks at C Squared Ciders in Denver know there’s no reinventing the wheel where pub food is concerned, but that doesn’t mean they can’t put their spin on some classics (chili hop seasoning on kettle corn, for example) and add some less common delights to the mix, like meatballs. C Squared puts four juicy spentgrain pork meatballs atop a bed of tangy lager-yeast-fermented kimchi and ponzu sauce. It’s familiar while being distinct, and it’s affordable and filling without leaning on the carbs — you’re getting plenty of those from that delicious cider. $5.

ort Collins’ Funkwerks has been putting out unique sours, saisons and barrel-aged goodies for close to a decade, but it feels like every time we sip a concoction from the brewery, it’s like we’re discovering it for the first time. Take the Tropic King Imperial Saison; at 8 percent ABV, and with the word “imperial” in its name, one would expect the first few sips to wallop the palate. But they don’t. Extra malt balances with fruity hops to create a tropical, slightly sour, and extremely refreshing brew. Prices vary.

ew Orleans in a fried ball. That’s the only way to describe the boudain balls at Crescent City Connection’s food truck. The Cajun classic is made by rolling pork boudin sausage with rice and spices, battering it in panko bread crumbs and frying it until golden brown. The shell is thin, but satisfyingly crispy. The pork and rice mixture is well-spiced, juicy and a balance of salty and savory flavors. It’s like eating a portable gumbo, and for that, Crescent City Connection deserves acclaim. $5 for 3.

hanks, internet. Because of you, things I wrote before the turn of the century continue to haunt me like a photo of a youthful indiscretion. Take my 1998 Nibbles column which resurfaced recently during an odd Google search. I named my list of the 100 greatest American foods.

My Top 10 included: 1) hamburger 2) pie 3) French fries 4) cold cereal 5) Peanut butter and jelly sandwich 6) Southern fried chicken 7) barbecue 8) cranberries 9) ice cream and 10) soft drinks.

I wrote: “For better or worse, here are the foods, beverages, ingredients, dishes and meals that Americans have created, influenced and actually eat, ranked by how great — how quintessentially American — they are.”

Looking back at my younger stuff I can wish I had been more serious and less sarcastic about American cuisine.

doughnuts (28), chocolate chip (or Toll House) cookies (22), popcorn (18), roast turkey with bread stuffing (69), potato chips (24) and maple syrup (95). They’ve stood the test of time.

There are many “what-the-hell-was-I-thinking” nominees I’d immediately delete, starting with condensed soup (40), toppings such as Cool Whip and Dream Whip (68), instant coffee (79), light beer (77) and “toy” foods including Fizzies, Pop Rocks and super-sour candies (68).

Wikimedia Commons There’s also a whiff of pre-9/11 American cultural arrogance in that Nibbles column, in lines such as: “Whatever pizza was or is now has little to do with Italy and everything to do with what Americans have made of it.”

Twenty years later, my perspective and my list of quintessential American foods would be different.

First, it would be renovated to include the smorgasbord of ethnic treats we have clutched to our taste buds, ranging from Mexican and Central American dishes to Middle Eastern staples (so much hummus), and diverse Asian faves including pad Thai and potstickers, chicken tikka masala and pho.

My token Navajo fry bread (74) item would expand to include many other Native American foods.

Natural foods (100) would be broken up into a dozen entrees that have changed American eating habits (not including kale).

In 1998 I wrote: “Compiling a list of the 100 greatest American foods offered more questions than answers, including the big one: Which foods are truly American, as American as apple pie ... a dish imported from England?”

That fundamental query — “What food is really American?” — still resonates powerfully in 2019, when some would build a wall to protect meatloaf and

mashed potatoes from a wave of pupusas and mofongo. Purists choose to ignore that the entire history of cuisine globally is based on migration, exploration, trade, invasion and assimilation.

Maybe the question should be: “Who gets to define what is American?”

If I was writing the list today it would focus on great regional American fare from New York bagels to Georgia soul food and street food from coast to coast.

I’d include bacon and other artisan foods and beverages (including beer) that have upgraded American grub.

Twenty years ago I jokingly included “American cheese (13), including singles, Velveeta, Cheez Whiz and the grilled cheese sandwich.”

Now the United States produces a wealth of fantastic cheeses, including some stellar examples from Colorado.

With any such list, controversy ensues, such as the exclusion of chocolate pudding, cheesecake, Pop-Tarts, scrapple, Cheetos, Egg McMuffins and the reuben sandwich.

The Paleo Bowl tops romaine with barbacoa, fajita vegetables, green salsa and guacamole. Who’s in the mood for some lifestyle tonight?

Taste of the week

It doesn’t get much more local, quirky and tasty than the A.D. Laws Four Grain Straight Bourbon I was lucky enough to sample over the holidays. I happily admit that I have never loved bourbon. My taste has always leaned toward single-malt Scotch, especially the less peat-y ones. This spirit produced at Denver’s Laws Whiskey House is rare enough because it involves four heirloom grains — corn, wheat, barley and rye — grown on family-owned Colorado farms. This is more unusual because Laws chose to bottle one barrel, Barrel No. 588, cask-strength after aging in charred oak for at least three years. It’s not diluted. It’s not blended. It is its own spirit. It bears slow sipping. The result is a smooth, dry-finishing beverage without the overbearing cowbell note of corn so typical of bourbons.

Dispatches from Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival

eer festivals are a dime a dozen, but there are none like this. Now in its 19th year, Big Beers, Belgians & Barleywines Festival is a spectacle.

Located in Breckenridge’s Beaver Run Resort — a hotel/convention center situated at the base of Peak 9, where bearded brewers in jeans mingle with snow-pant-clad skiers — Big Beers features a highly curated list from roughly 160 brewers pouring several selections of high octane brews, most beers clocking in north of 7 percent alcohol by volume. Like The Boston Beer Co.’s boundary-shattering Utopias — a barrel-aged ale that defies classification at 28 percent ABV — and Avery Brewing Co.’s latest barrel-aged series release: Sandy Claws, a 14.5-percent stout aged on peppermint and chocolate that tastes as delectable as it sounds.

Stouts abounded at this festival, as did barleywines and wheatwines, including Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s Barrel-Aged Wheatwine with Lemon — with enticing lemon and a beefy wheat Michael J. Casey bill playing harmoniously together.

And if long lines of eager drinkers are any indication, then barrel-aged beers are here to stay — as are sours, wilds, fruit beers and experimentation galore.

But Big Beers is much more than a beer fest. Spanning three days, brewers and beer geeks filled Beaver Run’s various convention rooms for panels that combined the artistic and scientific sides of the brewing game. While one seminar, hosted by Julia Herz of craftbeer. com, blindfolded participants for a tasting that focused on how all five senses perceive what’s in the glass; another brought together brewers from Sierra Nevada (Chico, California and Mills River, North Carolina), Mad Fritz Brewing Company (St. Helena, California) and Crooked Stave Artisanal Beer Project (Denver) to create beers, identical in style and recipe, but with Nick Isonot, Sierra Nevada Brewing Company each brew’s water chemistry altered.

Water quality’s impact on beer has long been debated and marketed, but what ended up surprising the brewers was how little these beers differed on paper despite what alterations they made to the chloride and sulfate contents. However, side-by-side tastings revealed distinct nuances in each beer, primarily carbonation perception. Talking water in beer may not be as sexy as malt or hops, but it is an ingredient that shall not be denied.

The highlight of Big Beers ’19 belonged to the seminar on ancient Nordic styles. With a panel including Aaron Stueck of Boulder’s BJ Brewhouse, who brought his spectacular Finnish-style Sahti beer, the discussion delved into three beers that define Scandinavian culture, highlighting history, tradition and the everintoxicating story of locality.

If beer is science plus art, then Big Beers features the honor roll of craft brewers. It’s a delight, one every inquiring drinker must experience at least once.

Special shout-out to Jamie Moulton of Niwot’s The Big Lewbrewski homebrew club for his Belgian pale ale and Belgian dubbel; both placed at this year’s Big Beers’ Homebrew Competition.

Avanti Food & Beverage brings trendy food hall to Boulder

hanks, Cheesecake Factory, for all the memories, but it’s hard not to be excited about Denver’s Avanti Food & Beverage food hall opening a second location in the Factory’s prime former spot on Pearl Street. At a time when Boulder’s downtown is being maligned for high rents that squeeze out locals, it’s refreshing to hear a local food enterprise can still afford to come in, and that Avanti’s co-founder, Patrick O’Neill, is planning to relocate to Boulder with his family to make sure the change sticks.

But the good news about Avanti isn’t just that it’s a small business making it work in Boulder, it’s what the food hall means for Boulder County’s dining scene. Food halls have been cropping up across the country for the last decade, and it’s high time we have a place that allows restaurateurs to grow their businesses without the do-or-die commit-

ment of a stand-alone brick-and-mortar shop, or else make them withstand the topsy-turvy world of food trucks.

O’Neill agrees: Boulder is ready.

“Our team did pretty extensive research and wanted to stick to Colorado rather than expand out-of-state. We strongly feel Boulder was our best bet for successful expansion,” O’Neill says. “My wife was born and raised in Boulder, I went to CU, my Boulder Weekly

brother and his family live in Boulder; we spend and have spent a lot of time there and have witnessed Boulder’s growth first-hand.”

Avanti will offer six stalls for a rotating group of restaurateurs. They supplement that with two bars, and a spot for coffee and pastries. Tenants sign a one- or two-year lease at the spot, and if Boulder’s location is anything like Avanti’s first venture in Denver, tenants will have earned enough cash and good will during their leases to open brick-and-mortar restaurants or otherwise grow their businesses elsewhere.

That’s a huge benefit to local food producers, O’Neill says.

“It’s all about testing things out in a supportive environment,” he says. “We offer our tenants lots of resources and a solid platform to introduce their concepts and build their businesses.

Concepts have the flexibility to change up menu items, pricing and marketing tactics while under the Avanti umbrella, unlike a brick-and-mortar location, where things are a bit more set in stone.”

O’Neill himself has built and sold several restaurants and bars over the years, and saw directly that, sometimes, all a good up-and-coming chef needs is a chance to break into the industry without having to plunk down their life savings.

“There are so many great ideas and restaurant concepts out there that don’t see the light of day due to barriers of entry,” O’Neill says.

Food halls have boomed recently because they ensure both a good dining environment and an eclectic array of food — there are some that offer single-cuisine booths of different fare (think an Asian market with one stall for pho, one for bao buns, one for sushi, etc.), and those that, cumulatively, provide a global offering. Despite the bevy of examples in bigger cities, where food halls have taken root, O’Neill says he and his partners “wanted to create an original experience, to create something different and unique,” and so they didn’t go on a tour of the country to see how other food halls are getting it done.

O’Neill says Avanti will “try hard” to showcase Boulder talent — they are currently accepting applications for tenants to fill out the stalls. One focus will be to use the space to bring in cuisine and food makers that have eluded Boulder.

“We aim to pick concepts that fill gaps in the local dining scene as well as satisfy diners’ day-to-day cravings,” O’Neill says.

lease structure ensures that Avanti will be able to “keep the dining experience fresh while also giving new and upand-coming chefs and restaurateurs enough time to test out their ideas and bring their culinary visions to life, while staying on the forefront of restaurant trends.”

After working with tenants at Avanti’s Denver location, O’Neill says the success or failure won’t impact Avanti’s bottom line — their vetting

process to get people in the door (and we’re sure there will be plenty of applicants) is designed to keep the quality high. Still, because there are minimal up-front costs, Avanti offers a unique chance for restaurateurs to grow, regardless of what the food hall launches them onto.

“Sometimes the concepts are ready for a brick-and-mortar at a year and other times they realize they need to make some changes to their concept

in order to work as a stand-alone business,” O’Neill says. “I think a tenant’s ‘success’ is subjective to the tenant; not every tenant in-house will be the leader in revenue, but the ability to work out systems, recipes, execution and building a fan base is invaluable.”

The 13,000 square feet of Avanti Boulder will feature a rooftop deck and modern design and décor. The plan is to open in late 2019.

ooks like 2019 is shaping up to be a new level of hell that none of us were prepared for. In this week’s episode of the most dramatic reality television series ever produced — our literal government — everything is still shut down over the stupid wall Trump promised his supporters that Mexico would pay for during his campaign. And because Trump is president and nothing is normal, no one really knows how long this temper tantrum is going to last.

So what even happens during a government shutdown? Does this means the news stops? Unfortunately not. Things are still happening and we still have to pay attention. Here are the most important stories coming out of the cannabis industry this week:

Hemp farmers forced to chill The passage of 2018 Farm Bill and its hemp legalization provision was met with excitement, but before farmers can take advantage of the program, they must submit regulatory plans to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and pass an FBI background check, meaning the shutdown has effectively stopped legal hemp cultivation in its tracks. Until the U.S. Congress approves an appropriations bill and the government reopens, the USDA is unable to approve state hemp program regulations. On top of that, FBI personnel responsible for conducting the background checks are furloughed because of the shutdown, essentially sidelining all prospective hemp farmers until further notice.

Cannabis Trade Federation announces lobbying team The Cannabis Trade Federation announced that it has formed the largest and most diverse federal lobbying team ever assembled by the cannabis industry. This group, with 15 principal lobbyists and over a dozen associates from five firms, will

work to pass the STATES Act. The STATES Act is a bipartisan bill that amends the Controlled Substances Act to establish that any business operating in accordance with state cannabis law will not be in violation of the Controlled Substances Act. It was co-written by Colorado Senator Cory Gardner and has been endorsed by President Trump. It’s currently seen as the leading effort to end prohibition in the U.S.

Blumenauer introduces H.R. 420 After November’s midterm election, Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-Oregon) predicted that 2019 would be a big year for cannabis. Last week, he introduced H.R. 420 aka the Regulate Cannabis Like Alcohol Act, which would remove cannabis completely from the Controlled Substances Act. “While the bill number may be a bit tongue-in-cheek,” Blumenauer noted in a press release, “the issue is very serious.” Cannabis would be placed under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Passage of the bill would allow federal money to fund cannabis research, open up banking options for cannabis businesses and provide a pathway for states with legal cannabis programs to buy and sell from one another.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez hires former Marijuana Policy Project director In a dream world, all public figures would be both good and hot, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, everyone’s favorite Latina socialist and the youngest woman ever elected to Congress. If you don’t pay attention to politics, you might remember her as the Breakfast Club dancer with the great skin who went to Boston University. I mean, weird she spent college being wholesome on a rooftop instead of learning how to smoke weed out of an apple, but I’ll let that go since she’s been such an advocate for legalizing cannabis and for the release of people who have been

incarcerated for nonviolent drug offenses. Last week, AOC announced that Dan Riffle, health care and tax reform expert, would be joining her staff as senior counsel and policy advisor. That’s big news for the cannabis industry. In addition to holding past staff positions for other members of Congress, Riffle was once director of federal policy for the Marijuana Policy Project. He left the organization back in 2014, attributing his departure to the overwhelming influence of big business in the legalization movement and how it shapes policy in terms of how cannabis is accessed.

Denver is going to vote on psychedelic mushrooms this May The advocacy group Decriminalize Denver has collected over 9,000 signatures and submitted petitions to Denver’s Election Division in order to get a measure on the ballot in May that would decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms in the city. The elections division has the next 25 days to ensure at least 4,726 of the signatures came from registered Colorado voters in order for the proposed measure to show up on the ballot for the city’s election on May 7, 2019. They claim the bill’s main goal is to keep people out of prison and keep families together. The U.S. has classified psychedelic mushrooms as a Schedule 1 drug, putting them in the same category as drugs such as LSD and heroin. Currently, those found in possession of magic mushrooms can face charges that range from a state jail felony to a first-degree felony. Last October, a team of leading scientists at John Hopkins called for magic mushrooms to be made legally available as a medicine.

They claim that the potential benefits of psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms, outweigh its possible harms and have gone on to tell the Drug Enforcement Administration that the drug should be placed in the most lenient drug classification category.

According to the website Marijuana Moment, four governors called for marijuana reform in State of the State speeches on a single day this week (Tuesday).

In New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo called for legalizing marijuana during his State of the State speech, formally completing his evolution from pot prohibitionist to pot populist.

“Legalize adult-use cannabis,” he said. “Stop the disproportionate impact on communities of color and let’s create an industry that empowers the poor communities that paid the price and not the rich corporations who come in to make a profit.”

His plan calls for putting a 20 percent state tax and a 2 percent county tax on marijuana transfers from wholesalers to retailers. In addition it would also tax cultivators $1 per gram (about $28 an ounce) on dry flower and $0.25 a gram (about $7 an ounce) on trim. Hey, it’s New York. Taxes play a big part in its life.

Meanwhile, across the mighty Hudson in New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy, who made marijuana legalization a big part of his gubernatorial campaign in 2017 (New Jersey governors are elected in odd numbered years), renewed his call for legalization in his State of the State speech.

ness left from years of failed drug policies and shift public safety resources to where they can do the most good,” he said.

The New Jersey legislature has already held a hearing on recreational marijuana legalization and the main things holding up a bill are differences over taxes between Murphy and State Senator Nicholas Scutari, who is sponsoring the legalization bill in the Senate.

Scutari’s bill calls for 12 percent in state taxes, which would be the lowest state tax bite in the country.

Murphy wants 25 percent in state taxes.

The tax rate New York decides to go with will probably influence the final figure.

In New Mexico, newly-elected Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham used her State of the State address to reiterate her promise to make opioid addiction a qualifying condition for medical marijuana use, saying she would direct the state health department “to adopt the longstanding recommendation from the Medical Cannabis Advisory Board to include opioid addiction as a qualifying condition” for receiving medical pot.

During her campaign she said she was committed “to working with the legislature to move toward legalizing recreational cannabis in a way that improves public safety, boosts state revenues and allows for New Mexico businesses to grow into this new market.” No elaboration on that in the State of the State address, however.

In Washington state, where the voters legalized marijuana at the same time Colorado did in 2012, Governor Jay Inslee talked about his Marijuana Justice Initiative, which allows people with simple marijuana possession convictions in the last 20 years to apply for an expedited pardon. An estimated 3,500 Washingtonians qualify under the program.

And as sort of a maraschino cherry on the sundae, during his confirmation hearing on Tuesday, Jan. 15, Attorney General nominee William Barr told the Senate Judiciary Committee that he would “not go after” state-legal marijuana programs.

Barr said he would respect state marijuana laws and businesses that had relied on the Obama-era Cole memorandum, which ex-Attorney General Jeff Sessions had repealed. The memorandum had said the federal government would not enforce the federal Controlled Substances Act’s anti-marijuana provisions in states that had legal pot on the state level, except in cases involving things like distribution of marijuana to minors, growing of marijuana on federal lands, and revenue from marijuana sales going to criminal enterprises and cartels.

He also called on Congress to pass legislation addressing the disparity between federal and state law.

And that was just on Tuesday.

On Monday, Jan. 14, J.B. Pritzker, Illinois’ newly elected governor used his inaugural address to again call for legalizing recreational marijuana; he had made legalization a major plank in his platform during the election.

Last week Virginia Governor Ralph Northam called for marijuana decriminalization in his State of the Commonwealth speech.

Legalization measures with a good chance of passing are expected to be introduced shortly in the Connecticut, Rhode Island and New Hampshire legislatures.

Marijuana legalization used to be considered a third rail of politics. By 2020 opposition to legalization may achieve that status.
