letters Everyone counts (Re: “Homeless survey on tap,” News, Dec. 22.) The holidays offer many of us a timeout — time off work, extra time with families and hopefully time to reflect on the things we take for granted most of the rest of the year: our health, our loved ones and the roof over our heads. Maybe keeping these blessings so present is why the holiday season also becomes the most charitable and neighborly time of year.

As true neighbors, each of us matters in Boulder County. No matter our income, race, gender, age or religion, we are all equal and deserve to be treated as equals in the eyes of our community.

We all count.

And to demonstrate that even our least fortunate brothers and sisters do count, we need to count them. Literally.

Boulder County needs your help this month in a volunteer effort to raise awareness about homelessness and its causes, learn who and where the homeless in our community are, and direct much-needed resources to this often underserved group.

On Jan. 23 and 24, the Denver metro area is again running a massive survey (Point-in-Time Survey), and this can only be done with the help of volunteers like you!

For this extremely important undertaking, our county will need nearly 100 caring volunteers to help administer the survey. After a brief but thorough training, our volunteer pairs will be placed in

agencies and in outreach areas throughout the county for two-hour shifts.

The importance of this survey cannot be overstated. This information is critical to raise awareness of this issue, receive funding for housing and homeless services, and focus resources to meet the needs of our growing homeless populations.

Despite its grandiose name, American Tradition Partnership is a front group that funnels money from corporations into various political ads attacking candidates whom the corporations don’t like — without identifying the corporate backers. Hoping to expand its laundry services for these secret donors, ATP filed suit in Montana to overturn the state’s century-old ban on spending corporate funds in state and local elections. The front group argued that the ban restricts corporate influence over government policies.

Wow. That’s so twisted and anti-democratic that it’d make an American eagle scream in pain. But for arrogant corporate elites and their political lackeys, too much is never enough.

The good news is that corporate lackeys don’t yet control Montana’s Supreme Court. On Dec. 30, the Court’s majority sided with democracy, common sense and state Attorney General Steve Bullock, who argued for the people of Montana that corporations already have beaucoup ways to assert their oversized political power without needing to funnel secret money into our elections.

Nonsense! Obama often weaves historical narratives into his speeches. I suggest Danish sober up from his ODS (Obama Derangement Syndrome) affliction and do a “little” research.

It is laughable beyond words to suggest that Newt Gingrich is a formidable presence as candidate for president of the United States. So much can be said about this man that disqualifies him to be the commander in chief, but I will use just the most recent example. Mr. Gingrich suggested that scientists are wrong about climate change because he, Mr. Gingrich, an amateur paleontologist, has studied temperature data for years.

Mr. Gingrich knows better than the IPCC, which has some of its finest minds right here in Boulder? This is ridiculous. Anyone who wants to base their opinions on this man rather than scientists from around the world deserves to be locked away with an invisible rabbit and a plate full of THC-laced brownies.

Oh, I guess that is already the case with Mr. Danish. Happy trails to you ...

Incredible shrinking comics You guys like to brag about how you are different than “corporate” newspapers, but I see you also are showing disrespect to the comics you run (This Modern World, Bob The Prairie Dog) by continuing to shrink their size in print. You pretty much need a magnifying glass to read the dialogue in them these days. If you don’t feel editorial cartoons are important enough to carry in your publication at a print size large enough to read, perhaps you should save your money and quit carrying them.

We all can continue to read them online (just like we do with the comics that the “corporate” newspapers have shrunk or discontinued). Comics are a legitimate commentary on today’s issues. I could easily point out articles in your publication that could be “shrunk” to make room for these rather excellent comics.

D

uring my adult years, I’ve watched the issue of reproductive rights descend from a debate about abortion to a debate about contraception, including condoms.

Back in 1984, when I was 20 and newly returned to the United States, feminists warned us that the most rabid anti-choice activists — the Operation Rescue types — don’t oppose the ending of an unborn life so much as a woman’s escape from childbirth. Deep down, feminist leaders warned us, many anti-abortion activists don’t even believe a woman should have a right to use contraception, particularly if she’s unmarried.

Anti-choice leaders dismissed this as if it was crazy talk, nothing more than a ploy on the part of feminists to detract attention from what anti-choice activists had to say about abortion.

I started writing about the issue in 1992, when I launched this weekly column. I saw clearly that many who opposed abortion were, in fact, opposed to women’s full equality, particularly sexual equality. When I suggested in my columns that the ultimate goal of the anti-abortion movement was to eliminate women’s sexual freedom altogether, including access to contraception, I was on the receiving end of sharp denials.

Now, as the evangelical Christian movement has pushed its way deeper into politics, we finally have a Republican candidate who is willing to reveal the endgame: “Many of the Christian faith have said, well, that’s OK, contraception is OK,” Rick Santorum said while campaigning. “It’s not OK. It’s a license to do things in a sexual realm that is counter to how things are supposed to be.

One of the things I will talk about, that no president has talked about before, is I think the dangers of contraception in this country.”

Santorum wants to see contraception become a state issue. (It was still illegal to possess or distribute contraceptives or information about contraception in some states as late as 1965.

The U.S. Supreme Court changed that with Griswold v. Connecticut.)

It’s easy to dismiss Santorum as a fringe lunatic. His views certainly don’t represent those of most Americans, who use and are grateful for contraception. And yet Christians of his ilk — those who are so single-minded in their desire to impose their notions of morality that they constitute a kind of Christian Taliban — have slowly made inroads, turning contraception into the leading edge of the abortion debate.

We’ve seen this in Colorado in two failed “personhood” amendments, which attempted to make oral contraceptives and the morning-after pill illegal, in addition to abortion. We’ve seen it nationwide in attempts by evangelicals to cut coverage for the pill and emergency contraception from insurance plans. And we’ve seen the results of the pressure created by these fringe groups in the Obama administration’s unconscionable decision to ignore the recommendation of his own staff in Health and Human Services and continue to block over-the-counter access to emergency contraception to girls under 17.

No matter how fringe an idea is, it must be taken seriously if it influences public policy. Those who ignore the threat against contraception do so at their peril.

Comedian Dean Obeidallah said that what Santorum essentially wants is to impose a sort of Christian Sharia.

Sadly, he’s right on. Just like Islamists, Christianists like Santorum focus largely on sex and women. Why? It’s all about control.

Said Gloria Feldt, former president of Planned Parenthood: “Sex and the role of women are inextricably linked, because if you can separate sex from procreation, you have given women the ability to participate in society on an equal basis with men.”

Whether Santorum represents only the fringe or not, it’s time for those of us who support women’s personhood to respond overwhelmingly and loudly any time anyone, particularly a politician, suggests that laws, not women themselves, should control what happens inside their bodies.

ands down easiest prediction for 2012: Boulder’s hyper-active activists will take time out from their busy schedule of sabotaging American food production to sabotage American oil and gas production.

The attack on food production took the form of an attack on genetically modified organisms (or “crops,” as we used to call them). Local activists launched a three-year campaign against growing sugar beets on Boulder County open space that had been genetically modified to resist the pesticide Roundup.

Both the beets and Roundup are produced by Monsanto Corp.

The campaign had no discernable purpose other than to give activists a platform from which they could talk Marxist trash against Monsanto and American business generally. Since 99 percent of the sugar beets grown in the U.S. are Roundup Ready, banning them from open space would be like slamming the barn door after the chimera got out.

So after listening to hours of testimony from dozens of earnest, knuckle-dragging little green luddites, the county commissioners approved the beets and a process for vetting other GM crops.

Time to Move On, as they say in the activist game. And the obvious place to move on to is oil and gas produced by hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”

First, some background.

Fracking involves injecting large quantities of water, sand and chemicals down wells to fracture non-porous but hydrocarbon-rich rock formations and release the gas and oil trapped in them.

There is nothing new about fracking.

Oil companies have used it for around 60 years, and in that time more than 1.1 million wells have been fracked worldwide — without causing the sky to fall or much other environmental damage.

What is new is that fracking has been combined with a second oil and gas production technology called horizontal drilling, which allows the drill string in a well to be turned 90 degrees and drill a

shaft for a mile or more into a layer of oil-bearing rock that might be, for example, 40 feet thick. This means the well passes through a mile of oil-bearing rock instead of the 40 feet of oil-bearing rock that would have been penetrated if the well were drilled vertically through the same layer of rock, which makes the well much more productive.

The combination of horizontal drilling and fracking has made it both technically and economically possible to produce enormous quantities of natural gas and, more recently, oil trapped in shale.

Estimates of U.S. natural gas reserves have more than doubled in less than a decade, to a 65-year supply at present rates of consumption (about 20 trillion cubic feet a year) — and are almost certain to grow, since only a fraction of U.S. shale deposits have been tested.

In Colorado, there’s about to be a big oil and gas boom in the eastern part of the state: Weld County, east of Boulder, will be in the thick of it. It will be an irresistible attraction for activists desperate to occupy the Next Big Thing and talk trash about Big Oil. So in the coming year we will hear all sorts of arguments against fracking, but the central one is this: Fracking can contaminate groundwater, either with the chemicals in fracking fluids or by allowing gas or liquid hydrocarbons to seep into water wells.

The objection is lame.

Fracking usually happens a mile or more below the water table, so seepage doesn’t occur. An MIT investigation of anecdotal reports of methane (natural gas) contaminating water wells near fracked well sites found that the contamination that actually occurred came from faulty installation of well casing, which can happen in conventional oil wells and has nothing to do with fracking.

A second argument against fracking is that oil companies have kept the chemicals in fracking fluids secret. More recently though, some companies have see FRACKING Page 9

revealed what their fracking fluids contain. Typically they’re 99 percent water and sand. Much of the rest is pretty benign stuff, like guar gum, which is also used to thicken ice cream. The nastier components include hydrochloric acid and some organic compounds, like petroleum distillates and ethylene glycol, which are only slightly nastier than what typically comes out of an oil well anyway.

These arguments for and against fracking are largely beside the point, however — because the activists’ real objection to fracking has nothing to do with fracking. The real objection to

fracking is that it will extend the age of oil, and delay the age of green energy.

But the fracking genie is already out of the bottle and can’t be stuffed back in.

The real counter-argument to antifrackers is that even if fracking is as bad as they say, even 10 times as bad, the damage is acceptable, given the benefits.

Those include U.S. self-sufficiency in natural gas for the foreseeable future, and a dramatic reduction in U.S. oil imports.

If those imports could be cut in half, it would save at least $300 billion dollars a year. A 50 percent cut in U.S. oil imports could also break the global price of oil

and defund the oil states that sponsor and enable Islamic terrorism.

Fracking is vital to national security, in other words — never mind the environmental benefits that would come from replacing a billion tons of coal with natural gas, which would produce about 1.5 billion fewer tons of CO2 a year.

Those who attack it are indifferent to both greenhouse gas production and the “blood for oil” implications of continued reliance on imported crude.

oulder County is bracing for a frack job, and not just in Longmont and Erie.

County officials confirm that oil and gas companies, primarily Encana, are preparing to drill on several sites in the county during 2012, including seven open space properties involving 48 wells. All are expected to be subject to hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.” That is the extraction method of choice in the Wattenberg Field, a large bed of natural gas that extends into Boulder County, primarily east of Highway 287 between Longmont and Broomfield.

This time, county officials hope the impacts won’t be as severe as in 2006 and 2007, when drilling operations rendered some county-owned agricultural land virtually unusable.

Boulder County officials say that, aside from the health worries about fracking, the drilling operations themselves can be harmful, especially on agricultural lands.

In 2006 and 2007, the impacts of drilling rendered some open space lands unusable for farming. Rob Alexander, director of agricultural resources for Boulder County Open Space, says there have been numerous negative effects from drilling on open space. Specifically,

he cites the Oxford Farms Open Space used by farmer Craig Sterkel, located at the southeast corner of Oxford Road and 115th Street, south of Longmont, which he says was damaged in early 2007 when Encana attempted to move a drilling rig off of open space land after a snowstorm.

he Boulder County commissioners have directed their staff to explore options for additional regulations on hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”

And officials say it is likely that the inquiry will lead to more controls on the practice.

Commissioner Will Toor told Boulder Weekly that the board has asked the county attorney’s office and the county’s land use department to investigate whether any additional “meaningful” controls can be put on fracking in unincorporated areas of Boulder County.

He says there may be options for regulation beyond what the county already has in the books.

According to Case, the county has had regulations on drilling since the mid-1990s, but since then, the state has changed its approach to the controls over drilling, which may open the door to additional county rules.

While the policy explicitly rules out GM alfalfa, it sets a specific condition for the use of genetically modified wheat, if it is developed.

Glyphosate is the primary ingredient in the Roundup weed killer produced by Monsanto, the company that also genetically engineers crops as “Roundup Ready” to resist the pesticide.

County Commissioner Will Toor told Boulder Weekly that limiting GM wheat to fields where no other GM crops are planted essentially rules out all strains except dryland wheat.

The policy states that any new GM crop considered for county land must have been in use for at least three years since its approval by the federal government, to “allow experts and policy-makers to assess possible impacts.”

It is a condition that Toor says ensures that Boulder County won’t be “on the front edge” of using new GM crops.

The policy also requires protocols limiting gene flow, ensuring neighbor notification and managing weed resistance to be followed for any GM crops used on open space.

brought in a bulldozer to pull the truck.

Then the bulldozer got stuck, so a large track-hoe pulled the bulldozer, but, unable to use the access road, they pulled it out across the farm field, slogging through mud for about 1,200 feet, leaving tracks up to four feet deep and 60 feet wide, he says.

“I felt that, for the type of conditions they were in, they shouldn’t have been out there doing what they were doing, but I guess when you’ve got to get a well completed, it doesn’t matter what the conditions are,” Sterkel says.

The operation destroyed the topsoil and the overall soil structure, according to Alexander, and while Encana attempted to mitigate the damage initially, the company quit after a time because it became too expensive.

“They assured us they would eventually address the damaged land, but never did,” he told Boulder Weekly.

“Today, after five years, the disturbed areas are still very unproductive.”

He says the crop yields on the disturbed land are so poor that the costs to farm the area exceed the value of the crop harvested.

“The production on it is way below what the rest of the field does,” Sterkel says, adding that even some of the three- to six-inch rocks in the gravel Encana used to build the access road are still in the field.

Alexander says there are numerous other examples of negative impacts of drilling, primarily by Encana. Once, a pipeline that was supposed to be reclaimed and revegetated became “just a weedy mess,” he says. “Individually, they’re not huge, but collectively, we’ve got a bunch of them.”

More may be in store.

Alexander and Matt Adeletti, senior paralegal specialist for Boulder County Open Space, say they have been notified that Encana and, to a lesser extent, Noble Energy, plan to drill extensively on county open space in 2012. (Oil companies must give at least 30 days’ notice to the property owner when they plan to drill.)

“It’s a pretty good flurry of activity,”

Alexander says. “It’s not typical.”

“This is an above-average amount,” Adeletti adds. “This would be more than we’ve seen in any past year.”

He explains, however, that sometimes, the oil companies’ predictions don’t come true.

“Every year, they tell me they’re going to drill this many wells,” Adeletti says.

But when asked about complaints regarding Encana’s clean-up efforts in November, she said, “Clearly, we have some work to do in Boulder County.

We’ve had a lot of success with our reclamations in Boulder County and in other municipalities, but we don’t always have success.

“We have a lot of leaseholders who grow crops on their land and have great success when our work is done,” she said.

“Are there isolated incidents where maybe a certain location hasn’t had success?

Again, you’re going to have locations like that across the field.”

specific language aimed at how GM crops are to be rotated. To prevent weeds from becoming resistant to glyphosate, the policy requires farmers using county open space to plant a nonGM crop in the year following the use of a GM crop.

“If this is not possible, and Roundup Ready cropping is done in two consecutive years, then a field must stay out of Roundup Ready cropping system for two years before returning to a Roundup Ready crop,” the policy states.

Toor says the intent is also to pre-

clude farmers from using Roundup during those non-GM years.

The final version of the cropland policy also aims to boost the amount of county land being farmed organically.

About 10 percent of the county’s agricultural open space is certified organic, and the policy calls for doubling that figure by 2020.

“Boulder County will work with producers, the natural foods industry, and other stakeholders to explore and expand market opportunities,” the policy states.

A $50K reminder of how far we haven’t come We may have elected our first black president, but it wasn’t very long ago that we were committing unspeakable acts of racism. Just this week, a state-appointed task force in North Carolina recommended that every living person who was sterilized against their will as part of the state-run eugenics program should be financially compensated for their pain and suffering. As a matter of perspective, this program was not terminated until 1977, well into the Carter administration.

The stated purpose of the eugenics program was to improve society by forcibly sterilizing people deemed to be undesirable breeders. As with most programs that would have been popular among the Nazis, race and class were the biggest determinants of who should not be allowed to have children.

In total, more than 60,000 mostly poor black women in the U.S. were sterilized without their permission, some as young as 10 years old, including one whose only negative quality was reported as an inability to get along with her classmates.

While several states have apologized for their racist sterilization programs, only North Carolina has gone so far as to suggest compensation to its 7,600 victims.

When approved, every victim of the program will receive $50,000 for his or her trouble. It redefines pittance.

And another reminder Happy birthday Guantanamo. The military detention center designed to hold people who have not been found guilty of any crime for as long as we want turned 10 years old on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

And if that doesn’t make you proud enough, just consider that about half of those who have been held for a decade have already been found to have committed no crime but are still being held due to restrictions on transfers.

It has now been two years since the deadline President Obama set for closing Guantanamo came and went. How about that American exceptionalism?

Your higher ed dollars hard at work Newsflash: The state of Colorado is broke. The budget is continuously being slashed, and higher education in particular has been hard hit. That’s what makes the recent announcement that CU will be hiring a full-time “campus alcohol agent” at an annual salary of between $40,000 and $56,000 seem more than a little out of touch and bordering on downright crazy.

The justification for this expenditure is that there are quite a few gatherings on campus, such as wine and cheese tastings, and it has been noted that the rules for drinking on university property seem a bit tricky to understand. The rules are things like “stop serving drinks an hour before the event ends unless it’s a less-than-two-hour event, in which case stop serving drinks 30 minutes before the end.” Another is “don’t let anyone buy more than two drinks at a time.” You get the point. It’s not rocket science, which, by the way, these same people seem to understand just find without a “rocket science agent.”

CU is not allowed to spend taxpayer dollars on alcohol. So it seems even more absurd that taxpayer money is allowed to be spent on an employee whose only job is to help explain how to drink properly on campus. All this while actual educators are being shown the door and tuition is being hiked through the roof.

T

hough Congress this year may be better known as the session that failed to accomplish anything, a report commissioned by three ranking members of the House shows this year’s collection of Representatives has cast more anti-environment votes than any other in history. The total averages out to one anti-environmental vote for every day in session in 2011. The votes were split by party, with 94 percent of Republicans voting anti-environment and 86 percent of Democrats voting pro-environment.

“The House Republican assault on the environment has been reckless and relentless,” says Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) in a press release. “In bill after bill, for one industry after another, the House has been voting to roll back environmental laws and endanger public health.”

According to the report, which was commissioned

by Representatives Waxman, Edward Markey (D-Mass.) and Howard Berman (D-Calif.), “the House has voted 191 times to undermine protection of the environment.” Those votes have included blocking actions to prevent air pollution, disarming the Environmental Protection Agency when it comes to enforcing water pollution standards and Clean Air Act protections, addressing climate change, designating wilderness lands, allowing oil and gas development off the coasts of states opposed to offshore drilling and slashing funding — by 80 percent — for the Department of Energy to support renewable energy and energy efficiency.

“These votes are just a preview of coming attractions if the fossil fuel industries get their way and place more Republicans in Congress and the White House,” Markey says in a press release. “With that kind of cast, anti-environmental blockbusters will be the norm, sending more mercury into our kids, more air pollution into our lungs, and more carbon pollu-

tion into our atmosphere.”

“We have so many natural resource-type situations here, so we find ourselves in Colorado getting hit by these votes all kinds of different ways,” says Veronica Egan, executive director of Great Old Broads for Wilderness, a Durango-based environmental advocacy group founded in 1989 to make the case that seniors still enjoy wilderness areas. “I think probably the primary way is that there have been votes … to reject scientific findings, in other words to compromise the role of science in decision-making. And right up there with that is votes to block action on carbon pollution on climate change and planning for adaptation to climate change.”

Many of these measures were tacked onto other bills, and in a Congress that’s spent more time spinning its wheels than moving forward on anything, a lot of them didn’t pass.

“One of the things that we’ve been so painfully aware of in the environmental business is that we thought, of course, in 2008, ‘Oh boy, the Bush administration is gone and we’re going to see some progress,’ and we’ve been sorely disappointed along those lines,” Egan says.

The lack of strong environmental leadership has led to constant attacks on environmental legislation, even bills with decades of evidence to show they work, like the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and Endangered Species Act. Clean Air Act protections were hardest hit with 77 votes that undermined

health-based standards and blocked EPA regulation of mercury and other toxic emissions from power plants, incinerators, industrial boilers, cement plants and mining operations.

Since it was signed into law in 1970, the Clean Air Act has reduced air pollution by more than 70 percent, according to the recently commissioned report. The EPA estimated in another report titled “Empirical Evidence Regarding the Effects of the Clean Air Act on Jobs and Economic Growth” that the law has saved more than 160,000 jobs in just the last year, and prevented another 13 million lost workdays and 3.2 million lost school days due to illness or disease caused or exacerbated by air pollution. The act has been heralded as an investment with better returns than Warren Buffet’s Berkshire Hathaway over the past 40 years by the National Resources Defense Council.

“Americans rely on our government to protect their families from the dangerous effects of pollution that can poison our air, water and environment,” says Berman in his press release. “This report puts Americans on notice: We must continue to fight efforts to erode the laws that protect our health and wellbeing.”

Former Denver Post reporter Amy Herdy reflects on her relationship with serial rapist Brent Brents

In

1989, a jury found Brent Brents, then 18, guilty of raping two children. He spent the next 15 years in jail, and when he got out in July 2004, he went on a terrifying rampage, raping and assaulting dozens of men, women and children until his capture in February 2005.

He mainly victimized prostitutes, but he went after other targets as well, including a woman alone in her apartment in Denver and a grandmother and her twin grandchildren in a house next to Denver’s Cheesman Park. After police captured him, Brents guessed that he had raped about 60 men, women and children during his lifetime. Judges from various jurisdictions sentenced him to a total of 1,509 years in prison — and that was only for crimes committed against 12 victims.

After his capture, local media scrambled to get angles, fighting each other for interviews with Brents, his family and his victims. But for reasons unknown, Brents chose only one journalist with whom to share his story: (now former) Denver Post reporter Amy Herdy.

Herdy tells her side of her strange, unsettling relationship with the serial rapist in her book, Diary of a Predator. It’s a truecrime retelling of Brents’ story, but it’s also what Herdy calls a “dual memoir.” It’s both the story of Brents’ horrific childhood as well as an intensely personal, revealing look at Herdy’s role as the journalist telling his

story, and the effect it wrought on her and her family. She describes the book in the prologue as “the tale of two predators — one a criminal, the other a journalist.” ~ ~ ~ Shortly after Brents got out of jail, he started dating a woman who had an 8-yearold son. Something about him didn’t sit right with the woman’s family, though, and they soon discovered Brents was a convicted pedophile. The woman asked her son if Brents had ever molested him. To her horror, the boy said yes. She told Aurora police,

who asked Brents to come in for an interview on Nov. 23, 2004. To the surprise of the police, he did, and he told an Aurora detective that yes, he did molest the boy.

But in what can only be described as an act of incompetence, police didn’t arrest Brents, but sent him on his way to roam freely about Denver. It wasn’t until Jan. 26, see PREDATOR Page 18

Brents claims that he is sorry for his crimes. And it’s not like he has anything to gain by saying so — he’ll be in jail for the rest of his life regardless. It was logistically impossible to reach Brents by deadline for this story, but Herdy offered to help. She suspected Brents might call her before Boulder Weekly’s deadline, and she offered to take some questions to Brents and relay Brent’s answers back to Boulder Weekly. Though a departure from traditional journalism, BW took Herdy up on her offer. These are the answers Herdy says Brents gave her, edited for punctuation and style: Boulder Weekly: Are you a victim?

Brent Brents: No. At one point I was but not anymore. I stopped being a victim a long time ago. I made the choices to do what I did. There’s nobody to blame but me.

BW: Would your life be different if you had a different upbringing?

BB: Had I had more normal parents I probably would be different.

BW: Do you still feel the need to be sexually violent?

BB: The thoughts have crossed my mind. I struggle. I hate myself for having them, and the medication takes the physical part away.

BW: Why Amy? BB: [He starts out answering directly to Herdy.] You weren’t trying to fuck me over or manipulate me or pay me. I felt like I could trust her the most. I believed in her. What can I say — it’s destiny.

BW: Are you remorseful?

BB: Yeah, you know I think for a while I was self-centered and cry baby about it. But as time goes on, and the more I learn about friendship, I’m starting to fill up with remorse for what I did.

You never forget those people you hurt. ~ ~ ~ It’s a dilemma anyone who has ever dealt with a pathological liar in their life is intimately familiar with: How do you know if said liar is telling the truth?

Promises of redemption, of remorse, are easily spoken, but you can’t help but wonder: How would I know if they are telling the truth? Herdy thinks Brents is genuinely remorseful, though she thinks he wasn’t always that way.

Another woman who corresponds with him, “Ellen,” also thinks he is genuinely remorseful. Ellen began writing Brents after her daughter died in a drunk driving crash. A devout Catholic, she felt spiritually empty after her daughter’s funeral. Inspired by Mother Teresa’s diaries, she believed that if she prayed for someone who had no one else to pray for him or her, she might regain some meaning in her life. God pointed her to Brents, she believes, and she eventually began praying for him and writing him.

To her surprise, he wrote back, and they Boulder Weekly

have been corresponding ever since. She writes, “he became a brother to me — a very good brother.”

“Brent is a different person than who he was eight years ago,” she writes in an email. She continues, “On a positive note, and this is very much a personal thought of my own without any proof whatsoever, I believe Brent has proved something.

People can change. A person incapable of love can learn to love … a person incapable of compassion can learn to feel compassion. This does not mean that Brent is capable of living in society; he is not. But Brent does have redeeming value as a person and as a child of God.” ~ ~ ~ The response to the book so far has been overwhelmingly positive, Herdy says.

She tells the story of a neighbor she didn’t know very well who came up to her and threw her arms around her, thanking her.

Readers write her and thank her for delving so deeply into the “why” aspect of Brent Brents. A film director, Kevin Lewis, contacted her about turning Diary of a Predator into a movie, and Herdy recently finished the first draft of the screenplay.

Lewis says he was intrigued by the portrayal of Brents. People have a tendency to see the world in black and white, he says, but the beauty is in the grey.

“There’s never been a movie about a rapist. When I talk to people about a serial rapist, people kind of cringe. It’s funny, people seem to see a serial rapist differently than they see a serial killer,” Lewis says.

“I’m really excited to get going with it and work on it. I really think that people need to know about the story, and I think it might give them a different perspective.

We always vilify these people, and at the end it’s not just black and white. There’s a lot going on that we just discount.” ~ ~ ~ The experience of writing a book, of exposing one’s self to horrifying stories of rape and sexual torture, begs some questions: Why? How could anything positive come from the story of Brent Brents?

Herdy’s somewhat baffling response is that the experience of knowing a serial rapist has been a positive one for her. She doesn’t consider Brents a friend, per se, but she says she has at times acted like a friend to him, and him to her.

“Someone like him is supposed to mess up your life, crush anyone that comes into his path,” Herdy says.

“Surprisingly, knowing him changed my life for the better. “[Before I met him] I was in a really cynical place in my career, and it awakened some compassion and empathy in me that I had feared was dead. … Once you start treating yourself with compassion, it spills out into the rest of the world.”

Pythian Whispers

The art of keeping it local

W

hat do you get when you mix Marxists, socialists and communists? A cooperative housing unit in the heart of Boulder known as Chrysalis. And what happens at coops after the collective gardening and cooking and cleaning gets done? Pure, enchanted creativity.

Or what they’re calling their upcoming Friday the 13th show, “A Night of Sibylline Prophecies.”

For the past five months a CU history and art alum and Chrysalis social events coordinator, Gregory Allan Davidson, has been organizing multifaceted art shows. These events offer a range of imaginative expressions; the upcoming show is no exception, with experimental music, poetry and visual and performance art from Boulder and Denver artists. The set list includes Pythian Whispers, Last Eyes, Cerealman, poets Lindsye Law and Anna Avery, and many more.

The co-op is part of a nonprofit founded in 1995 called the Boulder Housing Coalition, which formed to provide co-operative housing in Colorado. Masala was the first co-op started by the BHC, which is still active and located on the hill. Chrysalis is home to 13 people; they work like a democracy, with everyone voting on all major decisions regarding the house.

They hold nightly vegetarian meals and work in community gardens for their organic food. And utilize energy from solar panels.

The art events are a way for them to connect and engage with the larger Boulder community.

And the Boulder community needs it.

Since the closing of Astroland this past September, the D.I.Y. art scene’s public accessibility has drastically faded. The co-op members, as well as some other dedicated people, are doing their part to

make sure local artists get to share their work.

“It’s vital for artists to have this opportunity,” Davidson says. “We should give these artists a boost.

We have the space here; we should share it with others who appreciate what we’re doing.”

The major problem local artists have is lack of venue spaces to perform. Most venues have to bring in well-known musicians and artists to make enough of a profit to cover expenses. There also seems to be a divide between the youth culture and long-time, admittedly privileged residents.

Due to lack of space and encouragement from the community, many local artists, well known or not, have never gotten to show their work in Boulder.

“There’s just not as much focus on and support of youth culture, avant-garde art and experimental music as there could be,” Davidson says. “There are plenty of older people with privilege in Boulder who have been supporting the same kinds of generic art that people have been making for the last 150 years, but the youth culture isn’t being supported.”

The youth culture events are usually in houses, with guests being informed via word of mouth (or social networks). This is more than fitting for a cooperative space where the environment embraces connecting over each other’s creative capabilities (and not over the amount of money they can bring in).

The theme for the night, “A Night of Sibylline Prophecies,” is a play on the paganistic appeal of Friday the 13th as well as a play-on-words with the headlining band, Pythian Whispers, with ideas of ancient myths, sibyls, prophecies and trances coming to life.

“I am looking forward to experiencing the DIY scene from a Boulder perspective. I like how each of

the bands’ approach to music is very atmospheric and outside of the box, perhaps even unsettling to some people, ”says Emmanuel Calvin Luna, better known as Cerealman. “Gemini Trajectory uses field recordings and seem to create a very abrasive atmosphere.

Pythian Whispers is very improvisational, utilizing circuit-bent instruments, weird guitar sounds, synthesizers, disembodied vocals.”

The event promises to be noisy, weird, cutting edge, raw.

“This is about making work that’s honest, true to you, bringing something more pure than you’ve ever made before,” Davidson says. “It’s about creating experience. Sharing experience is the best way to build community; it brings us together in these hard times.”

round the same time Robert Johnson was emerging from the crossroads with his newfound guitar-picking skills, wailing about how all his love was in vain, blues music was going through a transformation of its own. The genre was spreading from its humble beginnings on the Mississippi delta to urban hotspots across the country, and the music became citified. The lyrical themes remained the same — all broken hearts, wrong-doing women and hard-drinking men (or vice versa), and the 12-bar structure has survived to this day, but cities like Memphis, New Orleans, St. Louis and Kansas City added urban spectacle to the mix. The blues was no longer about wallowing in misery, it was about overcoming it, through boogie-woogie piano and trumped-up horn sections, through scorching harmonica solos and walking bass lines.

“If you talk to any blues musician over the last 50 or 60 years, when they play the blues it would make them feel better,” says Mad Dog Friedman, vocalist and harmonica player for local blues band Papa Juke.

“It’s a transformational form of music. It could be a sad song, but if you bring some humor to it or bring some openness to it, it can help you out.”

Papa Juke refers to itself as “blues with attitude,” but really, a better description would be party-blues.

The group shares as much with James Brown as it does with the melancholy Delta blues artists that laid the foundation for the genre. Friedman is a St. Louis native, and his band takes liberally from the widerange of unique blues styles that emerged throughout

body in the band has a different set of influences. We write and play as a democratic band, so [those influences] are naturally reflected in the music.”

It’s easy to trace the effect that blues has had on popular music.

There are few American genres that aren’t at least a little bit touched by the wide influence of blues music. Papa Juke serves as a reminder of how other genres have altered the blues. The genre is heavily steeped in tradition, but it is also still evolving. Friedman and the members of Papa Juke are prime examples of musicians absorbing what they can from other genres and then putting it through the blues filter.

“I’ve been playing blues for 40 years,” Friedman says. “I played rural blues and I played Delta blues. I’m from St. Louis, so I grew up with that style of blues as well. I’ve played bluegrass and I’ve played country, with all different kinds of bands and all different kinds of music. The thing is, I’ve learned from every single musician I’ve played with.”

It’s that sort of spirit that brought blues from the intimate sadness of the genre forbearers to the wallof-sound booty-shakers that make up much of modern blues music. The blues will never lose its ear for heartache, but bands like Papa Juke aim to add a little bit of levity to that heartache. Papa Juke reminds us all that the best cure for the blues will always be good friends, good music and someone to dance with.

“We’re serious musicians,” Friedman says, nicely summing up the band’s mission statement, “but man, we don’t take ourselves too seriously.”

The result is a band that is equally comfortable playing simmering, slow-burn traditional blues songs (especially on songs sung by bassist Christine Webb, who adds some feminine gravitas to the group) as it is with sizzling tracks designed to get the audience out of their seats and onto the dance floor.

Their newest album Out of Blues fully embraces the group’s wide range of inspiration. The title is a reference to the group looking beyond traditional blues music for inspiration. Friedman calls it a concept album, not because of similar themes but because it is an exploration of the various influences on the group. Friedman is proud of the fact that the band’s original music can pay homage to all the artists and genres that have shaped the musicians in Papa Juke.

“We’ve always written blues-based original music,” says Friedman, “but what it comes down to is that every-

“We thought this would be an ideal time for our concert, because it’s a festive occasion, yet it’s not in the middle of December when everybody else has their concerts,” Julie Lancaster, Planina’s director, says. “And to help with the eastern European theme, one of our friends who has a business making baklava has prepared some eastern European treats for sale [at the concert].”

Planina goes back to the late 1980s, when Gordon McDaniel, a CU professor of Slavic languages, organized informal “house-sings” to explore folk songs he had sheet music for. Under his direction, these informal get-togethers evolved into the Planina Balkan Women’s Choir. More recently, the group has added men — there are now four of them and about 10 women — which gives them access to music that women alone could not perform.

“When that happened, we looked at each other and we said, ‘Men?’” Lancaster recalls. “We couldn’t even imagine how that would affect our whole experience, but in fact it’s turned out to be wonderful, because it really gives us the opportunity to have a more varied program.”

Lancaster acknowledges that she has an unorthodox background for a conductor. Largely self-taught as a musician, her scholarly background is in Chinese. So how did she get from Chinese studies to eastern European folk music?

“I had a little bit of formal piano training as a child and I was in choruses in school, but I never took any music classes in college,” she says. “[But] I liked exotic things. I fell in love with Russian and Hungarian music, at a very, very young age.”

For many years she explored the exotic through folk dance, which she was doing when McDaniel started the house-sings and then the women’s chorus. Part of what appeals to her is the irregular, asymmetrical rhythms that arise from the Slavic languages.

“As a dancer,” she observes, “you learn how to move to those interesting rhythms, and that was part of what we liked about this music.”

Planina, which performs in colorful eastern European folk dress, will perform more than holiday music on Saturday’s concert. “We’re just singing Boulder Weekly

songs that we love,” Lancaster says.

“We have songs from many different countries, and they’re organized according to what we think would make a pleasant program.

“There are several songs that are Christmas- or solstice-oriented, so we’ve positioned the concert as being about bringing back the light. There’s a Christmas song from Belarus, but there’s also a Georgian love song that’s mainly sung by the guys in our group — it’s to die for — and there are several dance tunes.

“Some of our fans are folk dancers, and we anticipate that some of the people will want to get up and dance on a few tunes. I think they can dance around the aisles in this church, and this typically happens at our concerts.”

In addition to the songs from Georgia and Belarus, the concert will feature music from Croatia, Armenia, Albania, Russia and — outside the Slavic realm — Latvia. But the largest component of the program comes from Bulgaria.

“We have quite a few Bulgarian songs,” Lancaster says, “and that’s because we’ve worked with more Bulgarian teachers than any other kind.”

What’s more, members of the group have travelled to Bulgaria on two different occasions to learn songs and styles from local village musicians, and there is a large supply of printed music that has been popularized by “Mystere de la voix Bulgare” (The mystery of the Bulgarian voice), the Bulgarian state radio and television female vocal ensemble that has toured the U.S. Lancaster says the ensemble is looking forward to performing in a concert setting.

“We perform so often at outdoor festivals, and we are not able to do the more nuanced pieces because those outdoor settings are better for the liveliest, louder pieces,” she says. “As a result, we often just put aside some of our favorite pieces, because they’re not really at their best [outdoors.] So we’re excited about this setting because it’s beautiful acoustics in the First Baptist Church, and we get to do some of our very most delicious material.”

When a 911 call comes from the woods, it’s Rocky Mountain Rescue group that responds

the end of a rescue, the vote that carries the most weight on whether it was successful should be from the person who came out on the stretcher, right?

Chris Klinga’s response, after coming down hundreds of feet of vertical rock face and scree field, crossing a river and riding an ambulance to an air-evac flight, and arriving at the hospital five hours after a 250-pound boulder landed on top of him while rock climbing in Eldorado Canyon, is that the rescue team, Rocky Mountain Rescue Group, did everything right.

“They were super-quick to the scene. It was probably one of the most technical rescues they’ve ever done and it was unbelievable how many people turned out for it,” he says.

Rocky Mountain Rescue took Klinga’s call along with some 143 other calls, or an average

of three per week, in 2008. The all-volunteer group is on the sheriff ’s list of organizations to call when someone dials 911 for help in the woods. If you get lost hiking down Mt. Sanitas (like two hikers who went off trail in December) and you call for help, it’ll be RMRG that answers. Same goes if you fall while climbing (as another climber did in December), or twist an ankle or break a leg.

“We are actually one of the busiest rescue teams in the country,” says Jonathan Horne, assistant group leader of the Rocky Mountain Rescue. “And certainly I think it’s probably fair to say the busiest all-volunteer team, outstripped maybe by some of the parks like Yosemite.”

“Our services are entirely free,” Horne says. “You hear lots of stories about people hesitating to call because they’re afraid of being charged, I don’t have insurance, I’m afraid of whatever, and there’s zero cost.”

Someone is on call at RMRG 24/7.

The summer months are their busiest, which can see six or seven calls in a single weekend, almost half of which come from hikers and another quarter from climbers like Klinga.

“I can’t thank them enough for what they did, because if they weren’t there, I can guarantee I wouldn’t be here today,” Klinga says.

Klinga and his partner, Chris Lee, were just starting up Doub-Griffith (5.11c) on the Redgarden Wall, Klinga belaying from a four-foot ledge, when a loose block the size of a coffee table fell, catching Lee on the way down and lacerating his liver before landing on Klinga, pinning him on the ledge and breaking his pelvis, both legs and his left foot.

Climbers in the area were the first to his side, helping get the rock off Klinga before rescue arrived. The first from RMRG was Drew Hildner, who got Klinga stabilized, then a paramedic, Julie Nelson, arrived — meeting Klinga hundreds of feet in the air.

“My accident was so complex that going in [to the rescue] I was like, wow, this is a really big deal. I don’t know how anyone is going to pull this off, and they pulled through,” Klinga says.

He was rock climbing again three months later, and RMR invited him to a panel discussion on the effectiveness and efficiency of their rescues. “[The panel] really solidified a lot of thoughts I had about them as a group, that they’re always striving to improve,” Klinga says.

Maybe it helps that there’s a disproportionate number of engineers on the 80-person team of the Rocky Mountain Rescue. And that applying to join the team as a supporting member, the lowest of three tiers, takes a year of attending meetings and trainings every other week before the group votes on if the applicant has demonstrated the competency and quality of contributions to merit joining the team. Some people come and go, Horne says, and some have stayed 40 years.

In his 30 years with RMRG, Dave Christenson says, he has gone out on calls to help college students who’ve fallen while scrambling in the Flatirons, and he’s photographed human remains after an airplane crash. The mission he spent the most time on, he says, was the search for former Marine Lance Hering, who faked a climbing accident and disappearance in Eldorado Canyon.

Christenson led a team of 35 military veterans to help with the search. The Boulder Weekly

sheriff ’s office determined it was a hoax after the exhaustive search — which had turned up a cache of carcasses from a predator and a wood stove, and spotted mountain lions and bears — found no trace of Hering, and the story started to unravel.

“There’s some relief that we did all we could,” Christenson says. “It’s just kind of relief that we know that the problem is resolved, that whatever his family is expecting, they’re not expecting people to search any more. They know he’s not lost in the woods any more.”

It’s a different kind of story that really stands out, though.

“The most rewarding rescues are helping with the severely injured and seeing them pull through what look like potentially fatal injuries and knowing that we helped save someone’s life,” he says.

“For me, the one that was most influential, it was the only time I’d been scared on a rescue,” Horne says. In the blizzard of March 2003 a call came late in the day to respond to an avalanche on the road to Eldora Mountain Resort.

“Apparently, there was a car coming down and there was a slide above them and it caught the car, so we were going to go up there and dig the car out and be on our merry way, and I had no idea, at that time, the scope of what we were in for,” Horne says. “I think Nederland got over 8 feet of snow in that storm, and so the road closed entirely ’cause it was just covered in avalanches. Tons of cars got trapped on the road, and so some people ended up getting stuck and getting sent back up to the lodge.

Others got evacuated down the slope, but all their cars had to be left on the road. It was a crazy, crazy night. They ended up being trapped up at Eldora for two or three days, so we were skiing in with supplies. The weather was too bad, they couldn’t fly helicopters in.

“That night when it was all unfolding, the snow was just dumping, and the slides kept coming down onto the road and we had people out there and we had to get them out, so it was a question of do we go up with them? Do we go down with them? And here we are in the middle of it. Normally you avoid avalanche terrain and here it was one of those rare instances where you really didn’t have a choice. So, if you can imagine, we were just sending people across this avalanche field one at a time, strapping a beacon to them and having rescuers wait on either side with shovels and probes. And it truly was terrifying.

In the rest of my 15 years, it’s never been scary like that.”

Earlier rather than later is always better for a call, Horne says. “We’re here for that moment that can make a difference.”

More than a local gin joint

rom an early age, Roundhouse Spirits’ Ted Palmer had distilling in his blood.

At age 10, he was spending summer vacation at his grandfather’s house. His elder relative had mastered making wine and other spirits, and had decided to educate his young charge on the finer points of producing whiskey. This intrigued the young Palmer, but didn’t sit so well with his father. When his dad found out, Palmer recounts, “That was the end of summer vacation.”

But it certainly wasn’t the end of Palmer’s distilling experience, as his business card now reads “El Presidente” of three-year-old Roundhouse Spirits, now based in Boulder. One of approximately two dozen distillers in Colorado, Roundhouse, founded by attorney Alex Nelson, currently produces small batches of gin and coffee liqueur, with an agave spirit on the way.

Before achieving his distiller position with Roundhouse, Palmer served in both the Coast Guard and Navy. He was a navigator, a demanding job which included making sure the vessel safely sailed its way through treacherous minefields. In his off time, and particularly in venues where alcohol was verboten, he’d “make booze on board.”

Palmer became well-known for his “bilge wine,” canned juice fermented for a few weeks in a cool part of the ship.

Compared to vintages from other vessels, his tasted the most like real wine.

Palmer took pains to prevent bacteria from seeping in as well as to add just the right amount of yeast to facilitate proper fermentation. He says fellow sailors advised him to “quit the Navy and do this.”

Back in the civilian world, Colorado native Palmer ventured to Seattle, where he worked with Pyramid Brewing, and he also consulted with other microbrewers, including local favorite Upslope. But he could never shake those early distilling lessons, and Roundhouse provided him an opportunity to craft spirits, with the notable exception of vodka.

“I don’t drink vodka,” he declares. “I drink stuff I can taste.”

If not vodka, then what?

“I’ve always loved gin,” he says. “It’s an easy way to get started. It’s a white spirit that you don’t have to age.”

But he’s quick to point out that despite this drink’s relative simplicity, not all gin is created equal. The key, Palmer notes, comes from the nature of the aromatics. He explains that gins that lead to numb noses and fingertips as well as harsh hangovers are the product of pesticide poisoning from the flavorings. Distilling concentrates these toxins.

these are, Palmer shares a brief history lesson, explaining that there are five styles of gin. The first is the original Dutch style, which was essentially a pharmaceutical beverage mixed by apothecaries. The English emulated the Dutch, although they relied heavily on domestic ingredients, namely juniper and coriander, which impart a woodsy flavor. Says Palmer, “It’s like licking a pine tree.” French distillers adopted a floral approach, adding aromatic blossoms for flavor. Americans mostly copied the English product, although the New World version distinguished itself through the addition of citrus.

For a beverage to be considered gin, juniper berries need to be the most significant ingredient by weight, and Roundhouse adds this to distilled neutral grain spirits. Other botanicals include the required coriander, as well as

floral elements like hibiscus, lavender and chamomile. Asian star anise also contributes flavor, as does the most expensive ingredient, sencha green tea. The result is a more nuanced alternative to the British-influenced drink. Roundhouse’s product is an exemplar of the newest category of this beverage, known as New Western Gin, which applies to spirits in which the juniper is deemphasized and other artisan flavors share the spotlight.

Roundhouse’s top-of-the-line product is Imperial Gin, which is barrel-aged.

Palmer eschews the fad of lauding the age of a particular gin, calling it essentially “meaningless.” He explains that a small barrel will reach peak flavor long before a larger one, so aging is sizedependent. That said, the charred sections of the white oak barrels containing Imperial gin are “where the chemistry changes things.” The barrel breathes, trapping and releasing the contents and allowing new flavors to develop, including, says Palmer, a cinnamon tone.

An escape to Paris

lear winter days often put me in a Paris frame of mind. This time of year, cold, crisp air, leafless trees and wintry light give the French capital a monochromatic yet nostalgic quality. For me, this romantic appearance evokes the black and white photography of Brassaï or the pre-World War II espionage novels of Alan Furst. It’s been some years since I’ve last ventured to Paris, and I was recently craving a dining experience reminiscent of the City of Light.

I thought Chef Radek Czerny’s L’Atelier, deeply influenced by classic French cuisine, would satisfy this hunger. The ambience here combines elements of the old and the new, melding retro Hummel figurines with an elegant yet modern palette of understated but not drab colors. As always, the service is among the most professionally rendered in town, and during a recent lunch visit, patrons were decidedly quieter than the livelier dinnertime clientele.

Artistically folded cloth napkins, de rigueur white tablecloths, and a signed photo of culinary titan Paul Bocuse complete the scene.

At dinner, starters range from Thaispiced mussels to traditional escargot and shrimp Louis. Classicism marks the entrée menu, which includes filet mignon and rack of lamb. The lunch menu features lighter options like a tuna nicoise salad and a salmon, lettuce and tomato panini. Heartier appetites

may opt for the steak frites or pork Florentine. Being somewhat familiar with L’Atelier’s offerings, I ordered a lunch of my longstanding favorites, and encouraged friend Amanda to do the same.

The $6 Caesar salad came on a long, narrow plate, and was neither a slavish duplicate of the original (coddled eggs, anyone?) nor a neutered facsimile. Amanda noted that the fresh flavor of the dressing made it seem as if it had been prepared to order, an impression that was reinforced by the crispness of the crouton. This adornment consisted of a hefty chunk of baguette, fried in olive oil. A high-quality anchovy served as additional garnish, adding just enough salt to com-

plement the impeccable freshness of the greens.

Our main course was the $12 lobster ravioli, perhaps my favorite item here. I suspect some restaurants would simply throw together pasta and crustacean and call it good. Not so here. Overly thick pasta is replaced by a wonton skin-like covering, appropriate to the seafood’s delicacy. The light Alfredo sauce contributes richness without making the dish unbearably heavy, and a splash of lobster oil offers considerable flavor without upsetting the dish’s balance. This is one of my favorite pastas in town.

We splurged on dessert, sharing the extravagant $17.50 Chocolate Window for two. When I first sampled it years ago, I dubbed it the “chocolate aquarium,” given its presentation in a rectangular glass vessel.

Nowadays it comes in a squarish glass vase with rounded corners, packed with a cargo of berries, banana slices, cream and chocolate mousse. It appealed to my childhood fondness for banana splits, while adding a layer of sophistication via the addition of subtle hazelnut tones embedded in chocolate and the tartness of blueberry.

While L’Atelier’s lunch prices are a few dollars more than casual venues, the difference is negligible when you factor in the quality of food, service and ambience. Most important, lunch at L’Atelier provides a reasonable introduction to fine dining — and satisfies any Parisian meal desires.

Hosch ans of espionage and the history of Europe between the world wars (or Alan Fu at least rst predating Pearl Harbor) will likely savor the novels of Alan Furst. While Furst is American, his books are unique in that his heroes are rarely British or American. Instead, his protagonists are French filmmakers, Polish spies and Hungarian ad men.

One of my favorites, The World at Night, depicts Nazi-occupied Paris, and the attempts of the citizens to preserve a sense of normalcy while choosing whether to collaborate or resist. Movie producer Jean Casson must make this choice in a city cloaked in uncertainty and shadows.

Start The New Year Off Right!

Twisted art and ale

The Twisted Pine Brewing Company has launched its Artisan Ale Project, a year-long celebration of Colorado’s artistic creativity.

Twisted Pine developed 12 distinct new beers and enlisted the help of a dozen talented Colorado artists for artwork to adorn the labels. On the first Saturday of every month in 2012, the brewery will introduce a small batch of one of the ales at a special release party that will double as an art show for that month’s featured artist.

Quantities will be limited, especially for the barrelaged beers in the series.

January’s lead-off entry is an American cream-style stout aged in bourbon barrels. The beer, known as Surreal Stout, features artwork by Allison Boozer of Denver. Other Artisan ales will include an Imperial India-style black ale, a high-octane braggot, a black saison and a barrelaged sour brown.

In addition, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, on Monday, Jan. 16, Twisted Pine will be donating $1 of every pint to the “I Have a Dream” Foundation of Boulder.

Bácaro hosts wine dinner

Bácaro will be hosting its annual wine dinner with worldrenowned Piedmontese wine maker Enzo Boglietti at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21. The dinner will feature a regional four-course menu designed by Executive Chef Fabio Flagiello, with wine pairings for each course.

Steak gets social

The critical element in this beverage is coldbrewed coffee from Boulder’s Unseen Bean, which Palmer lauds as the “best coffee around.” A lengthy cupping session with Palmer and Unseen Bean Master Roaster Gerry Leary led to the selection of a particularly smooth-tasting blend for Corretto. The coffee’s lack of bitterness reduces the need for added sugar in this spirit. Many distillery visitors acknowledge it’s free of the off-putting syrupy qualities of a certain java-based liqueur, and express a preference for this small batch product over its mass-market predecessor.

Vanilla Sprinkle Cookies

The holiday season has finally come to a close.

Of course, every day is a holiday when you have love in your heart and cookies in your jar. Or wear your heart on your sleeve, and toss your cookies.

Either one works for me.

I have had a fun baking season. Lots of special requests, and a lot of baking to give out as gifts. Yes, I’m sure everyone just loves giving me something thoughtful, unique and local, while I give them a special basket of brownies (by special I don’t mean special sumthin’-sumthin’ brownies, FYI). By this time, I’m sure my friends and family are so over being the taste-testers, and having to waste their time at the gym just to burn it off. I say, “Too bad people, you will eat it, and you will like it, and I will continue to bake it, and you will just have to fake enthusiasm. And I know I’m bossy.”

It’s this whole 2012 thing. The new year always agitates me the first couple of weeks. I know, boofreakin-hoo. I guess I will just have to bake some cookies, pass them out to everyone I know, and try and decipher from their expression who made new year’s resolutions.

That will be fun.

OK, I guess I will give you this treat. It is really simple. I know I did cookies recently, but I got asked for this recipe the other day from a reader, so thought I would share with the class. Vanilla Sprinkle Cookies. See? Easy.

These are similar to my butter cookies, with a few subtle changes.

I use powdered sugar in these cookies, and it changes the texture a bit. I like it — it is more of a lighter type cookie. If you aren’t a sprinkle kind of guy or gal (booo)

Vanilla Sprinkle Cookies Boulder’s Premier Full-Service Garden Center

2 cups flour 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1 cup unsalted butter (softened) 2 cups powdered sugar 1 egg 2 tsp. vanilla Sprinkles for cookies (color, your choice) Preheat oven to 350.

In small bowl, combine flour, salt and baking powder.

Set aside.

In large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Mix in egg and vanilla. Stir in flour mixture until well combined (dough will be a tad crumbly).

Place two to three tablespoons of sprinkles in small bowl. Drop 1 tsp. of dough into sprinkles. Place on non-stick baking sheet, or a parchmentcovered baking sheet. Bake for 6-8 minutes, until edges are just starting to turn golden brown.

Take out, let cool on pan a minute, place on wire rack or parchment paper. Enjoy!

lease be silent behind the screen.

Backstage at the 1927 Hollywood premiere of his latest screen triumph, film star George Valentin — played with irresistible zest by Jean Dujardin — waits for the crowd’s response. Standing in front of the sign shushing the backstagers, he hears the applause. We only see it, The Artist being a silent film (or nearly) whose story begins in the latesilent era. When Valentin takes his bow with his co-stars, female and canine, it’s clear this man’s oxygen is the love of a crowd.

The Artist exists also to be loved.

Writer-director Michel Hazanavicius (pronounced Ha-zahn-a-vish-us) has made a beguiling jape that takes this fictional character, an amalgam of Douglas Fairbanks Sr., John Gilbert and Gene Kelly’s Don Lockwood from Singin’ in the Rain, and presents him with every obstacle he can muster. The fickleness of the public’s changing taste; unemployment; a broken heart pushing him to the brink of tragedy. And then, after we’ve been through the wringer, a tap duet and out.

No wonder American audiences aren’t quite sure what to expect from the French import that premiered, triumphantly, at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival and has topped a majority of stateside critics’ prizes this month. Is The Artist a screwball comedy? A sentimental melodrama? A spoof? Serious?

What? Yes, yes, yes and yes. We may see Dujardin on the receiving end of an Academy Award come February. We may see Hazanavicius as well. There’s also a wonderful dog, played by a Jack Russell terrier named Uggie, who costars with Dujardin in Valentin’s swashbuckling adventures and is excellent, indeed life-saving company off screen.

The Artist is a pastiche with heart, sincere and rangy (too rangy in some ways). At the top of his profession, Valentin meets eager would-be starlet Peppy Miller, played by Berenice Bejo.

She dreams of success, and as her stock rises at Kinograph Studios — John Goodman glowers and grins as the combustible studio head — Valentin’s stock plummets. He refuses to adapt to the onset of the talkies. He puts all his money into one last vanity showcase, darker in hue than his usual exotic diversions, and pays for it. But just when things look blackest. ...

Corny, all the way. I have a few Boulder Weekly

problems with The Artist, some of them wonky and period-specific. For one thing, the film puts no real priority on being period-specific (it spans 1927 to the early ’30s).

Filmed in squarish, silent-film 1:33 ratio, Hazanavicius goes only so far in framing and propelling a given scene in a way evoking any particular filmmakers of the day, even the film’s acknowledged influences, including the lushly cinematic romances of Frank Borzage. The Artist jumps around stylistically and tonally and its use, in the dramatic climax, of Bernard Herrmann’s epic Vertigo score seems like a mistake. While many of the great late silent-era films were all

over the place in their emotional content, the swing here from effervescent parody to stark, borderlinemasochistic tragedy is more of a lurch.

So that’s what’s wrong with The Artist, which hardly gets in the way of what’s right. Dujardin found big success in Europe with Hazanavicius on their “O.S.S.” James Bond spoofs (Austin Powers-y, but more sophisticated), and it’s no surprise Dujardin and his zillion-dollar smile fall so effortlessly into this setting. The surprise is that the actor brings such sound dramatic instincts to the later passages (which can get a little pokey) detailing Valentin’s Star is Born bottoming-out. Bejo makes Peppy peppy, of course, but she’s winning and honest in both the character’s self-regard and her innate decency. James Cromwell is spot-on as Valentin’s loyal chauffeur, as loyal in his way as Uggie is in his.

My favorite scene comes just when we must invest fully in the love story if The Artist is to amount to more than a gimmick. It is a series of takes on a movie set wherein Dujardin and Bejo are seen playing around, enjoying each other’s company and then, miraculously, falling in love. The Artist comes back to this footage later, fruitfully. The musical score by Ludovic Bource doesn’t need the help from Herrmann and other sources; it’s beautiful on its own, and when the best of Bource’s themes (“Comme une roseie de larmes”) underscores the pathos, well ... between that and Uggie, I was more or less in the bag. The PG-13 rating is faintly ridiculous. What’s on screen barely merits a PG, and The Artist may not be great art, but it’s pearly entertainment.
