DEAN’S IMPACT REPORT 2025

Your support for BU Law makes a difference every day.

From the dean

Dear friends of BU School of Law,

I am deeply proud of all that our community has accomplished this past academic year. Together, we experienced a year of extraordinary achievement, and we once again demonstrated the strength and resilience of Boston University School of Law.

Our students continued to excel in remarkable ways. In a historic milestone for the school, BU Law won the National Moot Court Champion title at the 75th Annual National Moot Court Competition. We also celebrated the graduation of our first cohort of ASPIRE Scholars. Also, our graduates who took the Massachusetts bar exam for the first time in July achieved an outstanding 98.2 percent passage rate, reflecting their dedication as well as the exceptional work of the Academic Enrichment team.

Our faculty continued to advance the school’s reputation for rigorous scholarship and impactful teaching. Professor Madison Condon received the American Law Institute’s Early Career Scholars Medal and was recognized as one of Mass Lawyers Weekly’s Up-and-Coming Lawyers; Professor Jon Feingold was honored with the SALT Junior Faculty Great Teacher Award; Professor and Associate Dean Julie Dahlstrom was recognized with the Massachusetts Bar Association’s (MBA) Law School Clinician Award; and Caitlin Glass received the MBA’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Award. Additionally, as a whole and individually, our faculty were ranked as leading faculty with high scholarly impact.

These academic and scholarly achievements unfolded against

a challenging backdrop for higher education and the legal profession, and I am profoundly grateful for the extraordinary generosity you demonstrated this past year: more than 2,800 gifts from alumni, friends, faculty, staff, students, law firms, and foundations. Every contribution— large or small—helped sustain our mission and ensure stability at a moment when it was most needed.

Gifts to the Law School Fund were especially vital, enabling us to sustain essential programs and services. Support for the Public Interest Program (PIP) Fund continued to expand pathways for students committed to public service. This year’s Impact Report highlights major new commitments from alumni and friends whose generosity is helping us to build the strongest possible future.

Additional gifts, including endowed support for public service, a new research fund, new scholarship funds, and contributions to the Access Fund have further strengthened our ability to provide equitable opportunities to all students. We are also grateful for the more than $200,000 contributed by our law firm partners.

Finally, I want to recognize the alumni and friends who volunteered to mentor our students and who helped future BU Law graduates launch their careers. Your commitment reminds us of the

enduring strength of the BU Law community and the invaluable role that our alumni play in supporting one another and the school.

I hope you enjoy the stories in this year’s Impact Report, and I invite you to reach out to me or to Assistant Dean for Advancement Courtney Ward if you have any questions or would like to discuss your philanthropic goals.

Thank you for your continued support.

With gratitude,

AN ENDURING COMMITMENT TO WOMEN’S RIGHTS

Kim Lessow Crockett (LAW’97) shows her dedication in both work and philanthropy

Kim Lessow Crockett (LAW’97) still remembers the first time she saw a policy solution take shape in real time. As a college student in 1991, she interned with the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, an experience she modestly describes as “mostly stuffing envelopes and running around to deliver things,” but which, in reality, placed her at the center of the early push toward what would become the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA).

That internship opened her eyes not only to the mechanics of policymaking but also to the profound impact that legal advocacy could, and would, have on women’s lives. “From that experience,” she says, “I knew I would always want to incorporate work for women’s rights into my career.”

At Boston University School of Law, Lessow Crockett sought out hands-on ways to turn her conviction into practice. As a third-year student, she served in what was then the Battered Women’s Advocacy Program, working in the courthouse to help victims of domestic abuse navigate judicial processes and obtain protective orders.

“The training we students had with Greater Boston Legal Services was so efficient, so thoughtful—I remember feeling incredibly proud to be part of BU Law and that program,” she says. “BU taught us how to take concrete steps to protect women’s rights even before we’d passed the bar.”

Since law school, Lessow Crockett has remained committed to women’s rights and advocating for women

and families, focusing her legal work on medical-legal partnerships in the San Francisco Bay area, where she lives. She’s done work for the Peninsula Family Advocacy Program, a medical-legal partnership between pediatricians and the Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County to resolve legal issues that can adversely impact children’s health. In 2006, she founded Baby Basics of the Peninsula, a nonprofit diaper bank and parent mentoring program that serves low-income families in the East Palo Alto and Menlo Park area.

Lessow Crockett has now channeled her commitment to women’s and reproductive rights through sustained, strategic philanthropy for the Boston University Program on Reproductive Justice (BUPRJ), which was officially launched in 2023 by Professor of Law Aziza Ahmed, Edward R. Utley Professor of Health Law Nicole Huberfeld, and Robert Kent Professor of Law Linda McClain. The swift and effective initiative inspired Lessow Crockett to extend extraordinary generosity.

Lessow Crockett’s philanthropic support operates on two levels. She has created the Lessow Fund to establish the executive director position at BUPRJ and to sustain the role for several years. In addition, she has created a one-year postgraduate JD fellowship in reproductive rights. This year’s fellow, Helina Haile (LAW’25), is serving at Positive Women’s Network, a national reproductive-rights organization. (See sidebar.)

Together, Lessow Crockett’s investments are expanding the program’s reach and creating meaningful pathways for students to build careers in the field. Her support is designed to give BUPRJ the stability, flexibility, and long-range planning capacity it needs to thrive.

Her giving began shortly after the Supreme Court’s Dobbs

decision. “Like pretty much everyone else, I was stunned at how much damage it was going to cause,” she recalls. As 2022 came to a close, she found herself restless: “I’m a lawyer, and I’m lucky enough to be able to dedicate resources. I have to do something.” She made an initial gift to the law school—small, she insists, but pointed—to support the important work BUPRJ had already begun.

What followed was a deeper conversation about how to support reproductive justice in a way that was practical, long-term, and student-centered. For Lessow Crockett, BUPRJ’s strength lies in its ability to combine rigorous legal work with pragmatic, cross-disciplinary collaboration—in law, medicine, public health, and policy. She points to current BUPRJ Executive Director Sapna Khatri’s work with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health on SHIELD Act implementation and the groundbreaking role of the Reproductive Justice Unit in the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office, which she proudly supports. “I don’t know if that exists in any other state,” she says. “It’s phenomenal, and it’s exactly the kind of practical, effective impact I believe in.”

Her goal is to build a foundation sturdy enough that BU’s reproductive justice efforts can be proactive rather than reactive—forecasting two, three, even five years ahead. “I want there to be real runway,” she explains, “because we need to empower students to pursue careers in reproductive justice at the very moment when the field needs them most. Without fellowships and paid opportunities, they simply can’t.”

Looking ahead, Lessow Crockett sees BU as uniquely positioned: collaborative, nimble, and unafraid to join disciplines in service of the public good. “That makes me very proud to be part of it,” she says. “And it’s why I’ll keep supporting this work. We need the next generation of lawyers trained, ready, and able to lead.”

SHAPING REPRODUCTIVE JUSTICE WITH CARE

As the inaugural Lessow Reproductive Health Law Fellow, Helina Haile (LAW’25) is working with the Positive Women’s Network (PWN), a national organization dedicated to advancing policies that center women, transgender, and gender-diverse people living with HIV. Grounded in a healing justice framework, PWN’s work transforms policy into care, and law into an instrument for equal access.

“In just a few weeks,” Haile said in September, “I’ve learned so much about federal policy, the administrative state, and the way state laws shape reproductive justice.”

Working alongside a team of attorneys, Haile supports PWN’s policy agenda through research, communication, and community engagement. Across PWN’s Colorado and Alabama chapters, her work assists members in responding strategically to local and national legislation—aiming to ensure that reproductive justice becomes a firm reality for all. Haile also helps lead the organization’s Policy Fellowship, which trains BIPOC advocates living with HIV to amplify their voices in policymaking spaces. Each month, she produces #HIVResists, a policy newsletter that translates legislative updates and court decisions into accessible knowledge for PWN’s members.

Haile’s fellowship reflects a growing recognition that reproductive justice must be both intersectional and inclusive. “Litigation is one tool,” she notes, “but it is not the only tool. Our movement lawyering must be holistic. Once you step beyond traditional litigation, the field opens into many nuanced, meaningful ways to serve.”

UNLEASHING TALENT

The new Andrew R. Randall Professorship recognizes one of BU Law’s most accomplished scholars and helps advance his critical area of research.
“ Every day, I wake up with a huge smile on my face because I have the honor and privilege of getting to teach these remarkable students.”
WOODROW HARTZOG (PARENT COM’30)

During his finance career, Andrew R. Randall (Questrom’69, LAW’72) made a name for himself as a successful investor in New York City. After he passed away in 2023, he became known for something else: his generous, seven-figure estate gift establishing the Andrew R. Randall Professorship at BU Law.

Now, the return on Randall’s investment is coming into view. Woodrow Hartzog (Parent COM’30), one of BU Law’s most acclaimed faculty members, was recently named the inaugural Andrew R. Randall Professor. With this professorship, Hartzog has received the resources and academic freedom to pursue a bold and ambitious research agenda—and BU Law has retained an exceptional member of the community.

PRIVACY IN THE MODERN WORLD

An expert in privacy, technology, and the law, Hartzog studies the legal and social implications of information technologies like social media, robotics, and surveillance systems. For example, he studies how AI-powered tools can manipulate decision-making, deteriorate skills, and change power dynamics in potentially dangerous ways.

One of the most cited law and technology scholars in the United States, Hartzog has published his work in scholarly journals including Yale Law Journal, Columbia Law Review, and California Law Review, as well as in mainstream media such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Guardian. He is the author

of two books: Breached! Why Data Security Law Fails and How to Improve It (2022), and Privacy’s Blueprint: The Battle to Control the Design of New Technologies (2018).

The Andrew R. Randall Professorship is a remarkable act of generosity from an alumnus whose first gift, in 1982, was just $70. Randall’s thoughtful planning enables Hartzog to build on his body of work and “gives me resources to participate in events and develop scholarship that I simply wouldn’t be able to do otherwise, including giving talks, collecting data, and workshopping papers at events and institutions across the world,” he explains. “Some of the most important developments in AI regulation are happening in Europe and Asia. The ability to present my work, conduct interviews, and engage with scholars and policymakers there is invaluable to my research and perspective on the global response to these information tools.”

STUDENTS FIRST

Before this appointment, Hartzog was routinely sought out by policymakers and government leaders for his expertise on privacy and technology law. He has testified before Congress four times, repeatedly testified at the state level, and served as a commissioner on a Massachusetts special commission for the regulation of facial-recognition technology. Recently, he was featured in the documentary film Privacy People, which tells the story of privacy from the perspective of experts in the field.

While Hartzog is gratified by these achievements, “I’m really proud of the fact that so many [of my] students have gone on to have meaningful and rewarding careers,” he says. “It sounds cliché, but that is why we do what we do. Every day, I wake up with a huge smile on my face because I have the honor and privilege of getting to teach these remarkable students.”

At BU Law, Hartzog teaches foundational legal courses as well as upper-level classes on information privacy, advanced privacy, and digital civil liberties. He is one of the school’s most popular instructors, known for his affable nature, engaging teaching style, and ability to adapt quickly in a fast-moving field.

“This is a rapidly changing and really exciting environment,” Hartzog says. “I like to joke with my students that these courses could change as I go from the top of the elevator to the classroom. In fact, more than

once, I have looked at something on my phone from the elevator to the classroom and changed what I was going to teach that day.”

A GIFT TO THE COMMUNITY

Hartzog was selected for the professorship by his faculty peers, a gesture that recognizes both his scholarly pursuits and his teaching strengths. He’s grateful to his colleagues for the honor, and especially to the alumnus who made it possible in the first place.

“If I could say anything to Andrew Randall, I would say: the fact that you created this gift is evidence that you recognize how unique and special the BU scholarly community is,” says Hartzog. “I want to express my deepest gratitude for being able to further enrich that community ... and contribute to that legacy for the betterment of everyone.”

Recognizing a legacy for generations to come

Many of Boston University’s most thoughtful philanthropists plan their gifts far ahead. They start by reflecting on what personal giving means, how it could help future generations, and what it says about a personal legacy. And, ultimately, they establish a planned gift: a bequest in a will, a charitable gift annuity, a charitable remainder trust, or another estate-planning instrument.

Boston University celebrates these generous friends through the Claflin Society, founded by Elsbeth Melville (CAS 1925), dean of women emerita, and named for one of the co-founders of Boston University, Lee Claflin. The society hosts an annual spring luncheon for members and invites them to other campus events.

CREATING LEGAL LIFELINES

By establishing a new fund for the Health Law Program, Carol and Frank Riddick are making a difference for BU Law students—and the people they’ll help.

To understand why Carol and Frank Riddick (Parents LAW’25) decided to establish the Riddick Family Endowed Health Law Fund at BU Law, you have to go back in time, to when their parents were young.

At 17, Carol’s mother left her home in England to work for an architecture firm in New York City. Similarly, Carol’s father emigrated from Canada to the United States to become an architect.

“People didn’t do that back then,” says Carol. “So we’ve got some spunk in the family.”

Frank’s father became a physician in the 1950s, “back when it wasn’t about the money—it was about serving other people,” Frank says. “We were raised in families where that was what you did. That was your purpose in life.”

Neither Carol nor Frank followed in their parents’ professional footsteps—she became a veterinarian, and he was a business executive—but they absorbed the bigger life lessons they modeled.

“Our parents instilled in us the values of making your place in the world—adding value and continuing to grow and learn throughout your entire life,” says Frank, formerly the CEO of several private equity and business materials/ equipment firms. “And that’s the way we live our lives. At this point in our lives, we try to give back as much as we can.”

THE SOCIAL IMPACT OF HEALTHCARE LAW

BU Law wasn’t on Carol and Frank’s radar until their son Anderson Riddick (LAW’25) —the youngest of their three boys—decided to go to law school.

“I knew when Anderson was eight years old that he was cut out for law,” says Carol. “He was great with words and thoughts—and arguing.”

Within his first year at BU Law, Anderson gravitated toward the Health Law Program. Interested in learning more about healthcare law’s history and real-world applications, Carol and Frank met with some of Anderson’s professors in the program.

They discovered the depth and breadth of healthcare law, and how “it has such a big social impact,” Frank says. “Healthcare is such a significant issue, especially in the United States. If you have ever had a health issue in your family, you can empathize with people that are in difficult situations with healthcare and how it spills over into their whole lives. The system is complex and expensive, and it can make you feel helpless.”

“ Healthcare is such a significant issue, especially in the United States. ... The system is complex and expensive, and it can make you feel helpless.”
FRANK RIDDICK (PARENT LAW’25)

By establishing the Riddick Family Endowed Health Law Fund, Carol and Frank hope to prepare more BU Law students to do meaningful work in this field. The fund will help expand mentorship programs, lectures and conferences, and career-guidance resources for students studying healthcare law. Currently, the Health Law Program maintains about 40 faculty members who teach 40+ courses across BU Law and the BU School of Public Health.

Although Carol and Frank are now both retired, they show no signs of slowing down. These days, they divide their time

between South Carolina, the mountains in North Carolina, and New York City, staying busy as both professionals and philanthropists. “I have very little free time; Frank plays golf a lot,” Carol quips.

But no matter how they spend their time, the couple continues to make giving back a priority.

“We are thankful for the gifts that we have had and the education we have had, and we want to share that with others,” says Carol. “We want to leave the world a better place.”

Frank and Carol Riddick (Parents LAW’25) support the Health Law Program—and the people its students will serve.

SUPPORT THAT HELPS RIGHT AWAY

The Law School Fund provides some of the most flexible and immediately useful support for a wide range of activities at BU Law. Here are just a few of the ways the fund has enhanced our work this year.

BRINGING STUDENTS AND FACULTY TOGETHER

The Faculty Match program connects all first-year students with a faculty member to welcome them into the BU Law community, connect them with resources that align with their interests, and provide academic advising on course selection. The mentorship program aims to strengthen connections between students and faculty, provide a consistent 1L experience for all of our first-year students, and reduce their anxiety as they join the BU Law community.

Faculty met with their cohorts over lunch at the start of the fall semester, then followed up in October with social activities— bowling, museum tours, and more. In November, they met informally to help relieve any pre-exam stress. The faculty-student groups will also meet three times in the spring semester: first to share reactions and reassurance about fall grades, then for another social gathering, and finally to discuss course selection for the fall. Gifts to the Law School Fund helped make it all possible.

PREPARING STUDENTS FOR THE BAR

The Law School Fund has helped us bolster the preparation we offer students for the bar exam: a readiness diagnostic exam in January of their third year, a course on bar exam skills, advice on accommodations and character-fitness disclosing, and more. It’s no coincidence that BU Law achieved its highest-ever passage rate for the July 2025 Massachusetts bar exam: 98.2 percent. Overall, of the 214 graduates in the Class of 2025, 95.7 percent passed the bar on their first try.

SUPPORTING RESEARCH—AND FUTURE RESEARCHERS

By providing resources for students to assist in faculty research, the Law School Fund delivers invaluable benefits: expanding opportunities for academic research, opening doors for young scholars, and facilitating collaborative learning between professors and their students.

“Getting involved in the production of new knowledge is one of the most critical and self-affirming parts of a law student’s education,” says Angela OnwuachiWillig, dean and Ryan Roth Gallo Professor of Law. “It helps them find their voice and see how they can directly shape the development of ideas, legal doctrine and legislation, and general change in our society.”

Lilibeth Chavez (LAW’25) is just one of the student researchers who have benefited from the fund’s support. Chavez worked with Professor Karen Pita Loor (Parent COM’30) to explore the recent upswing in laws restricting people’s right to protest. More than 20 states have enacted such laws, and more have been proposed at the federal level. Chavez’s research position was paid, thanks to the alumni and friends who have given to the Law School Fund.

CREATING POST-GRAD FELLOWSHIPS

Thanks to the Law School Fund, we were able to hire a few graduates who had not secured jobs. Their work at the school includes supporting programming, administration, and faculty research. The funding that made these positions possible is incredibly important, both to strengthen our employment numbers and to provide recent graduates with valuable professional experience as they launch their legal careers.

For all of these purposes and more, generous support of the Law School Fund makes a profound difference to our students, our faculty, our school, and our community. We are deeply grateful to the alumni and friends who make these unrestricted gifts.

STUDENT REACTION TO

THE FACULTY MATCH

PROGRAM

HAS BEEN OVERWHELMINGLY POSITIVE:
“ I found it very helpful to have a faculty member to help demystify 1L and provide support and advice along the way.”
“ I really enjoyed getting the chance to talk about a wide range of topics related and unrelated to law with a professor and get their takes on various aspects of BU Law.”
“ One of my favorite things about being at BU. The best part about this program is that it bridges the gap between students and professors— I feel like we’re truly part of the same community.”

Opening doors to public service

THE POWER OF COLLECTIVE SUPPORT

A COMMUNITY OF GENEROUS DONORS MAKES PIP POSSIBLE. IN FY25,

320 DONORS GAVE

$5–$75K

EACH, FOR A TOTAL OF $250K+ TO SUPPORT SUMMER INTERNSHIPS FOR 85 BU LAW STUDENTS

When it comes to summer internships, BU Law students face a dilemma: many want to work in public service but can’t afford to take an unpaid internship— as is often the case with these roles.

That’s where the Public Interest Program (PIP) Fund comes in. Generously funded by BU Law alumni, friends, and the law school itself, the fund awards grants to BU Law students completing an unpaid legal internship in a nonprofit, public interest, or government organization.

The impact of these experiences—on both students and the organizations they serve—is profound. For students, they can lead to a deeply satisfying, lifelong career in public service. For participating organizations, which often face financial constraints, interns extend the breadth and impact of their work.

WE ASKED STUDENTS: WHAT WAS MOST VALUABLE ABOUT YOUR INTERNSHIP?

I witnessed firsthand the care, expertise, and intellectual rigor required to develop policies that protect investors and shape the financial markets.

NERO DOTSON (LAW’26)

Legal Intern

United States Securities And Exchange Commission

I really valued the connections I made with like-minded immigration advocates. I learned so much from their expertise, and the sense of community I found at PAIR.

ALEXANDRIA CASARANO (LAW’26)

Legal Intern

PAIR Project (Political Asylum/Immigration Representation)

WE ASKED EMPLOYERS: HOW DID BU INTERNS HELP YOUR TEAM?

Julia Horan (LAW’26) distinguished herself as an exceptional member of our team. Her writing skills are truly outstanding. Her legal analysis is consistently thoughtful, well-reasoned, and reliable. She demonstrates excellent research skills by providing comprehensive and accurate results. I dare say her skills rival those of some practicing attorneys.

Jason Walker’s (LAW’27) summer placement here at the CSC has been a complete success from my point of view. Jason very articulately presented one of the three major cases on the agenda. ... He made such an effective presentation that I jokingly moved that henceforth all cases should be presented by legal interns.

MICHELLE AMIDZICH FRITZ Attorney-Advisor

United States Department of the Interior

WE ASKED DONORS: WHY DO YOU SUPPORT PIP?

Our son, Travis Lynch (LAW’18), received a PIP grant, which he used for his 2L summer internship with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. Upon graduation, Travis became an assistant district attorney for the Hampden District [in Springfield, Massachusetts] and is now deputy chief of its appeals unit. Through our contributions to the PIP Fund, we seek to support other aspiring prosecutors.

SUSAN BANKS (LAW’84) & MATTHEW LYNCH (LAW’84)

L. QUINAN, JR. General Counsel

Massachusetts Civil Service Commission

We hope that our contributions lead to more BU Law graduates pursuing public interest law careers or, at least, being committed to supporting public interest law organizations throughout their careers. We also hope that the strength of this program, and the Law School’s broader commitment to public interest law, helps to attract students with diverse backgrounds and interests to BU Law.

STEPHEN KAY (LAW’87)

ROBERT

THANK YOU, DONORS!

The School of Law is grateful for the support of alumni, faculty members, staff, friends, corporations, foundations and matching gift companies who made a gift to the school between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. Gifts from the BU Law community are essential to sustaining a top-tier legal education. Your support has made possible scholarships, experiential-learning opportunities, faculty research, and programs that enrich the student experience and prepare graduates for meaningful careers.
