New England Aquarium Whale Watch

Get out on the water to witness the largest wildlife around. The Aquarium’s cetacean-themed, three hour cruises go to Stellwagen Bank Marine Sanctuary, where you can view humpback, minke, finback and pilot whales, as well as other ocean creatures, including dolphins. If you’re lucky, maybe you’ll spy a rare North Atlantic right whale (above).

Taking the Mystery Out of Boston History

Fort Point Channel

W

hat started out as tidal marshland has evolved into the bustling waterway that separates South Boston from Downtown. How it went from a rugged area of sand, mud and idle seawater to the Fort Point Channel Landmark District is an interesting tale of American ingenuity.

The original “Fort” was located on the downtown side of the channel, where the International Place skyscraper now stands. There was an outcropping of land on a small hill where a battery of cannons was posted to protect the harbor during Colonial times— hence the name “Fort Point.”

In 1836, filling of the marsh began and the hills were leveled. Most of the newly created land was soon developed by the Boston Wharf Company. At the beginning of the 20th century, bridges were constructed across the Fort Point Channel at Northern Avenue, Congress Street and Summer Street, which all opened at the time to let ship traffic pass through. By the 1920s, Fort Point had become a major player in sea trade.

Wool from around the world passed through Fort Point on its way to the textile mills of New England.

Other goods manufactured and warehoused in the area included iron, glass, brick, machinery, wagons, soap, elevators and beer.

Goods weren’t all that traveled across the Fort Point Channel. In 1976, sculptor Christopher Sprout crossed the channel in search of a studio space after a massive fire in Jamaica Plain displaced many artists.

This was around the time that the Fort Point Channel area evolved from an industrial space to a culturally rich artist haven. Today, the Fort Point Arts Community (FPAC) is home to one of the largest concentrations of visual artists in New England.

Although the channel is no longer used to transport goods, the area surrounding the water is still bustling.

The Children’s Museum, Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum, Children’s Wharf Park and the John Joseph Moakley United States Courthouse all reside along the banks of the Fort Point Channel.

The area around the channel, now officially known as the Fort Point Channel Landmark District, brings together culture and industry, all in impressive fashion. —Melanie Potter

trolling along Beacon Hill’s picturesque gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and Federal-style row houses, it’s not uncommon to feel as though you’ve traveled back in time.

They built their settlement three miles south of the rock and named it Plimoth Plantation. Plymouth The site of the Pilgrims’ 1620 landing is still marked by Plymouth Rock, and the surrounding area is dotted by historical museums that celebrate the town’s origins.

Plimoth Plantation offers visitors a chance to step into a Pilgrim village from 1627 and explore the Mayflower II, a replica of the ship that dropped anchor in Plymouth Harbor nearly four centuries ago. Other favorite stops for history buffs include the 1749 Court House & Museum and Pilgrim Hall Museum. Salem This North Shore town will always be known for the Salem Witch Trials of 1692, but Salem also boasts a bustling wharf with many bars and restaurants, and is regarded as an up-and-coming enclave for the young and trendy. Fans of spooky stuff can visit the New England Pirate Museum to see what life was like when Blackbeard roamed the high seas, or tiptoe through the Salem Witch Museum or Witch Dungeon Museum.

On Halloween, the city transforms into one giant party for ghosts and ghouls, but 365 days a year, Salem is a charming place to explore and enjoy.

WALDEN POND STATE RESERVATION

This National Historic Landmark features 335 acres of protected open space that preserves the area made famous by Henry David Thoreau, complete with hiking trails that lead to the replica of Thoreau’s one-room cabin. In summer, it is a popular swimming destination. When the Pilgrims first landed here on the Mayflower in 1620 prior to their more famous landing in Plymouth, they stayed for five weeks before moving on to form a more permanent settlement across Massachusetts Bay. If only we all had five weeks to explore this historic and culturally rich seaside haven! Provincetown not only boasts the aforementioned historical significance, commemorated by the 252 foot-tall Pilgrim Monument (pictured above in the background), but also several pristine beaches, loads of eclectic shopping, sightseeing and whale-watching boat tours, diverse dining options and the status as America’s oldest continuous arts colony.

And speaking of the arts, Provincetown is home to galleries, museums, a thriving theater scene and an active writers colony—in fact, famed writers and former residents Norman Mailer and Eugene O’Neill had long associations with the area.
