The son also rises

Going into the family business can be intimidating for any progeny of a famous figure. As a new exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts (refer to listing, page 24) ably demonstrates, painter Jamie Wyeth—son of celebrated artist Andrew Wyeth, as well as the grandson of revered illustrator N.C. Wyeth— has carved his own path, rising from the shadow cast by his ancestors. A celebrity in his own right, Jamie has painted portraits of such prominent figures as JFK (above), Andy Warhol and Arnold Schwarzenegger, as well as the landscapes of both his native Brandywine River Valley in Pennsylvania and his summer retreat in coastal Maine. More than 100 such works populate this first major retrospective of his career, which opens to the public July 16 and runs through the end of December. —Scott Roberto

Storming of the Streets

Put on your finest pair of dancing shoes, grab a glass of champagne and join in on one of the largest Bastille Day bashes in the United States. The French Cultural Center’s Bastille Day Party (refer to listing, page 20) celebrates the French people’s uprising against the monarchy and storming of the Bastille prison during the French Revolution. Marlborough Street in Boston’s beautiful Back Bay is blocked off to accommodate more than 2,000 party-goers who dance in the streets past sundown while enjoying beer, wine and food from local French restaurants, including Petit Robert Bistro and Brasserie JO. Making waves

Picture this: Enjoying relaxing tunes and sampling specialty food with a group of friends outside on the Boston waterfront. This is exactly what Wavelengths at the Institute of Contemporary Art (refer to listing, page 23) is all about. Celebrate the start of this new summer concert series on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. with Dean Wareham (pictured), formerly of Galaxie 500 and Luna, and opening indie-rock band Quilt.

Wareham goes solo with a soulful, dreamy sound that pairs perfectly with the aesthetically stunning ICA— and a refreshing cocktail, of course.

The following Friday, experience the melodious rhythms of Autre Ne Veut, who puts a dark twist on classic R&B, and opening act Ava Luna. During the July 11 and 18 performances, Island Creek Oysters brings its popular raw bar to the edge of Boston Harbor, offering fresh seafood to pair with your musical palate.

Drawing a crowd

Take a magnificent multimedia journey through animation, interactive video and even live hand-drawing at Company One’s New England premiere of Astro Boy and the God of Comics (refer to listing, page 22). This eye-popping spectacle conceived and directed by Natsu Onoda Power tells the story of Astro Boy, a crimefighting Japanese robot from the 1960s, and his real-life creator Osamu Tezuka, “The Father of Manga.” This artistically crafted production hits the stage at the Boston Center for the Arts’ Plaza Theatre July 18–August 16. With the actors adding their own personal flair by actually doodling on stage, audiences will be drawn in—quite literally.

Family Fun Beyond Boston Road trips with the family can form the basis of life’s warmest memories, so jump in the car or hop a train and head to one of these fun destinations to create new memories you’ll cherish for years to come. Salem Willows Seafood Festival (187 Fort Ave., Salem, 603-918-3385, festeventsne.com): Sample seafood from shrimp to clam chowder at this event boasting live music, a lobster rolleating contest, fireworks and a Kiddie Land complete with face painting, street performers and games from July 11–13 (admission is $5, and kids under 10 get in free). Even if you miss the party, you can still visit to learn about the infamous Salem Witch Trials and indulge in Halloween-inspired frivolity year-round.

The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art (125 West Bay Rd., Amherst, 413-658-1100, carlemuseum.org): Named after the author of children’s classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, this unique institution in western Massachusetts is dedicated to fostering a love of reading through illustrated books. Current exhibits celebrate the 50th anniversary of Harriet the Spy and a new book by Carle and 14 other artists that showcases colorful animal drawings.

Six Flags New England (1623 Main St., Agawam, 413-786-9300, sixflags.com/ newengland): Located just south of Springfield, this giant amusement park boasts some of the wildest rides in the eastern U.S.—including the 55-mile-per-hour, 12-story-high Batman: The Dark Knight roller coaster and the new 400-foot New England SkyScreamer, the tallest swing ride in the world—as well as Hurricane Harbor Water Park.

Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden (21 Edwards St., Springfield, 413263-6800, catinthehat.org): Theodor Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss to you and your kids, is honored at this sculpture park in the city of his birth. Marvel at bronze likenesses of all your favorite characters, from The Cat in the Hat to Horton the Elephant.

Canobie Lake Park (85 N. Policy St., Salem, N.H., 603-893-3506, canobie.com): A New England favorite for more than 100 years, this landmark just over the New Hampshire border combines the best of amusement parks (Roller coasters! Taking the Mystery Out of Boston History

Hood Milk Bottle

O

ne of Boston’s quirkiest historic landmarks, the Hood Milk Bottle is a wooden ice cream stand outside the Boston Children’s Museum on the Fort Point Channel. Its exact connection to the museum, however, is likely unknown by even longtime Hub residents.

Built in 1933, its original home was on Route 44 in Taunton, Mass., where Arthur Gagner used it as a storefront where he served his homemade ice cream.

It was one of the first fast-food drive-in restaurants in the United States, and is an authentic, novelty example of “Coney Island”-style architecture.

Eventually abandoned in 1967, the bottle fell into disrepair until local dairy company H.P. Hood and Sons bought the landmark with the intention of giving it to the Boston Children’s Museum. They trucked it to Quincy, where it was renovated and revamped, and then ferried to Boston on April 20, 1977 on a journey across the harbor dubbed the “Great Bottle Sail.” Thirty years later in 2007, City of Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino proclaimed April 20 to be “Hood Milk Bottle Day.” The giant milk bottle stands at 40 feet tall, weighs in at 15,000 lbs, and could hold about 58,000 gallons of milk if it were a real milk bottle. It’s been through a number of face lifts over the years due to wear-andtear, yet still maintains its classic shape and style.

Today, it’s an iconic staple in the city of Boston. During the summer months, it serves soft serve ice cream, snacks and refreshing drinks. —Samantha DiMauro

trolling along Beacon Hill’s picturesque gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and Federal-style row houses, it’s not uncommon to feel as though you’ve travelled back in time.
