On behalf of all the people who call this great city home, I welcome you to Boston. I am honored to have the opportunity to lead this world-class city as Mayor. The home of top colleges and universities, dynamic businesses, and cutting-edge research institutions; the future of Boston is bright. From grand art museums to cozy neighborhood restaurants, we are many places and one community.

I invite you to explore the many cultural events and installations we have throughout Boston this summer. Artists, dancers, musicians and actors from all around will bring Boston to life and I invite you to take part in one of the many festivals we have coming to the city. Between the Boston Arts Festival, Caliente!, and the Foreign Film Festival there will be something for everyone to enjoy.

Moving forward, there are big plans for the future of tourism and cultural activities in Boston. Nightlife is expanding; through growing transportation infrastructure and collaborating with businesses we are broadening an already impressive entertainment industry. The establishment of a cabinetlevel position for the arts will introduce a new spotlight on cultural programming and policy in Boston.

I am thrilled to have you here and I hope you enjoy the sights and sounds of Boston as much as I do.

Billy Ray’s not-so-little girl Miley Cyrus heads to TD Garden as part of her Bangerz tour. The story was published in July 1964, 8 months after the President‛s assassination, as a special tribute to him.

Perhaps it was inevitable that the vigorous, young President who made physical fitness a national priority would join forces with the red-caped, comic book hero whose feats of super-human strength so captured the popular imagination.

A New Merchant in Town

Housed in a former leather goods shop in Downtown Crossing, The Merchant is a stylish new brasserie-style spot open for lunch, dinner and late-night. Chef Matt Foley (formerly of acclaimed Cambridge restaurant Craigie on Main) offers inventive dishes such as seared jumbo scallops with cauliflower, grapefruit, Swiss chard and bacon; wild mushroom risotto with fontina and truffle honey; and veal sweet bread “nuggets” with pancetta chips. Banned in Boston

Mayor Marty Walsh, Governor Deval Patrick and Aerosmith’s Tom Hamilton walk into Boston’s House of Blues. Don’t wait for a punch line here, because the trio— and dozens of their high-profile fellow locals—will actually take the stage at the popular Fenway nightspot on April 11. Banned in Boston features Hub-themed song remakes and TV parodies like “Irish Step Dance Moms” and “Duck Tour Dynasty” using the talents of the aforementioned local heavyweights, all in the name of charity. Proceeds benefit Urban Improv, which uses improvisational theater workshops to teach violence prevention and conflict resolution. Learn more at bannedinboston.org.

It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane

John F. Kennedy did some pretty amazing things during his presidency. However, did you know he hung out with Superman?

In 1963, Kennedy’s White House partnered up with DC Comics to create a story promoting his Council on Physical Fitness.

The comic, drawn by Superman artist Al Plastino, was still in production when Kennedy was assassinated. Now you can see the original comic book art for the first time at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum as part of the new exhibit Superman’s Mission for President Kennedy.

You don’t often hear the words “ping pong” and “luxury” in the same sentence, but that’s just what the creators of Blazing Paddles are aiming for with their new Fenway venture. It’s so luxe, in fact, that you won’t even have to chase after your stray balls— there are runners for that so you never have to take your eye off the game. The tables can be rented for up to two hours each, and players will enjoy the privacy and convenience of “luxury boxes” separated by red caging. In addition to ping pong, there’s an oversized bar and a kitchen churning out American comfort food like grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup and a pepper jack cheeseburger. Taking the Mystery Out of Boston History

Fenway Park

F

enway Park is one of the oldest and smallest baseball stadiums in America—and also one of its most beloved. Situated in the middle of a dense city block, the park has endured a lot over the years, including multiple fires, threats of demolition and a near-century-long championship drought from its home team.

Nevertheless, Red Sox fans consider it sacred—some even going so far as to spread family members’ ashes on its grounds—and with a 100th anniversary under its belt and no end date in sight, Fenway seems poised to play on for generations to come.

In 1911, John I. Taylor, then-owner of the Red Sox, wanted to move the team out of the Huntington Avenue Grounds where they had been playing for years.

He set his sights on the Fens neighborhood and purchased more than 365,000 square feet of land between Ipswich and Lansdowne streets. On April 20 of the following year, the Red Sox played their first official game in the new Fenway Park against the New York Highlanders—now known as Boston’s rival New York Yankees.

In 1918, Babe Ruth helped the Red Sox win the World Series against the Chicago Cubs. The following year, he was traded to the Yankees, and the Red Sox were caught up in an 86-year losing streak known as the Curse of the Bambino.

In 1933, the Red Sox were bought by Tom Yawkey and the left field wall had its advertisements removed 10

and was painted green, thereby creating the iconic Green Monster. The entrance to Fenway, previously called Jersey Street, was renamed Yawkey Way in memory of Yawkey after he passed away in 1976. The following year, one red seat was installed to commemorate the longest home run hit at Fenway by Ted Williams in 1946. A statue of Williams was erected outside Gate B of the park in 2004.

In 1997, the Green Monster inspired the creation of a mascot by the name of Wally, eliciting mixed opinions by Red Sox fans. Sports announcer and restaurant owner Jerry Remy warmed up the crowd to the fuzzy green character by creating a backstory for him. In April 2012, Wally was named the No. 5 Mascot in All of Sports by Forbes magazine.

Besides baseball, Fenway Park serves as a venue for everything from naturalization ceremonies to hockey games to concerts—including Neil Diamond, whose song “Sweet Caroline” has become a Red Sox anthem and played during the eighth inning of every home game. Fenway has also been featured in movies like Fever Pitch, The Town and Moneyball.

Fenway Park celebrated its 100th anniversary with a large pregame party before a Red Sox/Yankees game on April 20, 2012. Both teams wore 1912 throwback jerseys to commemorate the occasion.

And in 2013, the Sox made history by winning their first World Series at home in 95 years. —Petra Raposo

Feeding Fenway Chef Ron Abell makes sure Red Sox Nation never goes hungry

Contrary to popular belief, Fenway Park Senior Executive Chef Ron Abell does a lot more than grill hot dogs—though we’re sure he can make a mean Fenway Frank.

Abell has been in charge of Fenway’s culinary operations since 2006, supervising everything from the upscale EMC Club to the lowliest concession stand. He cooks for the owners, the players and their wives, the media, the player’s club and staffers. If you’re eating in Fenway Park, Abell has likely had something to do with it.

Pre-Fenway, Abell worked in some of the city’s most esteemed kitchens, including Icarus, Biba, Maison Robert and The Parker House.

And though he’s certified as a professional chef through the Culinary Institute of America, he understands the special needs of Red Sox nation.

“Red Sox fans are creatures of habit,” he says. “We have the best hotdog. Fenway 14

Franks, people grew up on them, and a lot of our challenges are how can we get them not to buy the frank, Italian sausage, chicken fingers, fries. That food matches the game so well and we do that food so well, it’s challenging to get people to try new things.”

The off-season is used for experimentation, and Abell organizes tastings and feedback sessions. He’s been working on a portobello burger, a homemade pretzel, Sicilian-style pizza, Maine crab cakes with Old Bay remoulade, spicy mango Sriracha shrimp and a beignet with local, organic honey—all of which you’ll find in various sections of the park come opening day.

Abell admits that his own game day cravings run on the simpler side. “One of my favorite items is the kettle corn,” he says. “It’s awesome.”

trolling along Beacon Hill’s picturesque gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and Federal-style row houses, it’s not uncommon to feel as though you’ve travelled back in time.

ust south of the Charles River lies Boston’s axis of entertainment, the Fenway neighborhood.
