A Whale of a Show

SpeakEasy Stage Company’s latest production is a big one— in more ways than one. Samuel D. Hunter’s The Whale is a tragicomedy about a morbidly obese man making one last attempt to connect with his teenage daughter. Veteran Boston actor John Kuntz stars as Charlie, donning a 60-pound fat suit from the original Off-Broadway production. “Charlie is dying of congestive heart failure as the play opens, and his condition just gets worse and worse,” Kuntz says. “Capturing his breathing is very important and challenging. It needs to sound short, desperate and frantic at times. I need to tell that story while being careful not to hyperventilate.” Read our full interview with Kuntz at BostonGuide.com. Need for Spiedo

As much as we enjoy the rustic, unfinished look that’s popular in many new restaurants nowadays, sometimes we crave a more sumptuous dining experience—and M.C. Spiedo delivers. The new Seaport restaurant, situated in the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel (606 Congress St.) was inspired by the opulence of the Italian Renaissance. With deep, curtained booths, soft lighting and a palette of gold and crimson, the place has a subtly palatial feel. The theme continues with the menu, created

by James Beard Award-winning chefs Mark Gaier and Clark Frasier. Most of the dishes are inspired by historic recipes, like the lasagna from the Borgia table, a recipe that came directly from the 16th-century banquets served at the court of Ferrara. Boston by Design The Hub is a playground for architecture buffs, boasting buildings from the post-Medieval era (the Paul Revere House) to modern times (the Institute of Contemporary Art). For a lesson in Architecture 101, simply hop on the T for a self-guided tour. These are a few of our favorite facades. By Erica Jackson Curran Old State House (1713): This Washington Street landmark, the site of the Boston Massacre, claims the distinction of being the oldest surviving public building in the city. The architect and builder is unknown, though its High Georgian style suggests it was designed by a trained British architect. T stop: State Street.

The State House (1798): Charles Bulfinch, recognized as America’s first native-born architect, designed this Beacon Hill beauty.

The dome was originally covered in copper rolled by Paul Revere, but now it shines in a sheath of gold leaf. T stop: Park Street.

Trinity Church (1893): Often referred to as one of the most historically significant buildings in America, Trinity Church was designed

by Henry Hobson Richardson. The “starchitect” created a new category of architecture with this distinctive building: Richardson Romanesque. Daily tours are available. While you’re there, head across the street to the equally impressive Boston Public Library (1895) for a free art and architecture tour (refer to listing, page 42). T stop: Copley.

Boston City Hall (1968): It’s been called one of the ugliest buildings in the world, and people still occasionally demand its demise.

the seat of city government is a prime example of brutalist architecture: bulky, asymmetrical and no-frills. T stop: Government Center.

John Hancock Tower (1976): This 60-story glass tower, designed by I.M. Pei & Partners, is celebrated as one of the greatest skyscrapers of its era—yet it wasn’t always so beloved. When it was being constructed, the building’s glass windows took to falling out and shattering on the streets below until, eventually, all 10,344 original panes of glass had to be replaced. Excavation for its foundation also caused issues for nearby Trinity Church, and the narrow design turned out to be extremely susceptible to wind. Today, it’s hard to imagine Boston’s skyline without it. T stop: Copley.

Ray and Maria Stata Center (2004): Architect Frank Gehry described his Stata Center as “a party of drunken robots,” and we can’t think of a better description of the unique structure at M.I.T. The $300 million building houses the school’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, among other departments. In 2007, M.I.T. sued Gehry and a construction company, citing design and construction failures. T stop: Kendall Square.

Where to Chow Down: Stephi’s in Southie (130 Dorchester Ave., 617-345-5495): The newest addition to Stephanie Sokolove’s popular family of restaurants (Stephanie’s on Newbury, Stephi’s on Tremont) serves cocktails and comfort food with a sophisticated spin.

Lincoln Tavern and Restaurant (425 West Broadway, 617-765-8636): With pressed-tin ceilings and vintage-inspired furniture and accessories, Lincoln feels like a swanky blast from the past, yet the menu is decidedly modern. Try anything from the wood-burning oven—the butternut squash pizza is especially popular.

The Paramount (667 East Broadway, 617269-9999): After earning a devoted following on Beacon Hill, the Paramount opened an outpost in Southie. Whether you’re going for a craft beer dinner or its famous brunch, this place doesn’t disappoint.

Blue Dragon (refer to listing, page 61): Superstar chefs have flocked to South Boston’s Fort Point neighborhood in recent years, including Ming Tsai. His Asian gastropub takes an Eastern approach to classic pub fare.

Local 149 (149 P St., 617-269-0900): This cozy spot features a roaring fireplace, local art and rib-sticking dishes like chicken ’n’ waffles with apricot jam, crispy duck legs confit and a barbecue baby back rib sandwich.

American Provisions (613 East Broadway, 617-269-6100): This gourmet grocery stocks craft beer, fine wine, charcuterie, cheese and locally made products, including pasta from Jamaica Plain and French dressing from Chestnut Hill.

Neatly Nested (373 West Broadway, 609923-4459): Interior designer Danielle Platzer has filled her Pinterest-worthy home goods shop with a shabby chic mix of vintage furniture and modern art and accessories.

Ku De Ta (663 East Broadway, 617-2690008): Carrying brands like True Religion, Joe’s Jeans and Alternative Apparel, Ku De Ta keeps Southie’s ladies in the latest looks.

Just for Fun: Castle Island (2080 William J. Day Blvd.): Home to Fort Independence, a National Historic Landmark, Castle Island is just a short drive from downtown Boston. Locals flock to the calm waters of Pleasure Bay during the warmer months, but it’s a popular spot for strolling year-round.

Institute of Contemporary Art (refer to listing, page 17): The harbor views are almost as breathtaking as the art at this Seaport District museum.

beacon hill An old-world feeling awaits you in this quaint part of the city

trolling along Beacon Hill’s picturesque gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and Federal-style row houses, it’s not uncommon to feel as though you’ve travelled back in time.

Both eminently posh and utterly accommodating, this area has borne witness to much of the city’s storied past. The State House—with its gleaming gold dome—sits on the peak of the hill where the beacon for which the district was named used to reside.
