For one weekend only (January 30–February 2), ArtsEmerson presents HOUSE / DIVIDED, a moving examination of the modern American Dream through the scope of the current mortgage and foreclosure crisis. Inspired

by John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, HOUSE / DIVIDED interweaves the Joad family’s struggles on their way West with scenes revealing the effects of today’s banking and housing systems. The set, constructed from the frame of an actual foreclosed home, is designed by The Builders Association, an innovative New York-based production company that blends performance, text, video, sound and architecture for this highly immersive theater experience. Shack Attack

Shake Shack aficionados are a zealous lot, the kind to line up in a snowstorm just for a burger from the NYC-based chain—which is exactly what they did when the new Cambridge location opened earlier this month.

Shake Shack has earned its cult-like following thanks to juicy Angus beef burgers, fresh-made frozen custard and cheese-drenched fries. Visitors to the new restaurant at 92 Winthrop St. will be treated to exclusive offerings like the Crimson Red Velvet (vanilla frozen custard blended with a slice of crimson red velvet cake from South End Buttery) and the MInT Chocolate (chocolate frozen custard blended with minted marshmallow sauce and chocolate truffle cookie dough)—both nods to the city’s top institutes of higher learning.

You’ll also find the Shack’s newly developed “fresh fries,” which are only available at select locations. Stay tuned for a Newbury Street Shake Shack set to open later this year.

Chocolate Reign

Valentine’s Day may be a few weeks away, though it’s never too early to start indulging in chocolate. Luckily, the Taste of Chocolate Weekend, hosted by the Harvard Square Business Association, returns in all its sweet splendor January 24–26.

The weekend’s signature Tasting Event takes place Saturday from 1–2 p.m. on Brattle Plaza, where chefs and chocolatiers face off to see who can make the most delectable chocolate creation. It’s up to the tasting public to decide who will be crowned the winner. Over the rest of the weekend, stop in to participating Harvard Square restaurants and shops (such as J.P. Licks, Cardullo’s and Beat Hotel) for special events and dishes featuring everything cocoa. “You never know what you’re going to get,” HSBA’s Denise Jillson says. “This is just a little preemptive celebration of all things warm and sensuous and sexy and wonderful.” The weekend is part of HSBA’s Winter Carnival, a six-week-long series of family-friendly events. Ward of the St8

The North End is synonymous with Italian food, but don’t expect to find any traditional red-sauce dishes at the neighborhood’s newest addition, Ward 8. Owner Nick Frattaroli—whose family owns North End restaurants Ducali, Lucia and Filippo—envisioned an American brasserie with a menu full of comfort food and a roomy bar serving classic cocktails. Executive chef Kenny Schweizer (fresh from The Four Seasons’ Bristol Lounge) offers dishes like the Carpetbagger Carpaccio (beef carpaccio, fried oyster, pickled scallion) and a lobster roll with black truffle mayo, while bar manager Mike Wyatt’s (of Eastern Standard fame) house cocktail is the Ward 8, a blend of Four Roses bourbon, orange, lemon and grenadine. Happy 175th Birthday, Charles!

The Charles Playhouse celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2014, and the theater is boasting a fresh new makeover just in time for the milestone. Built in 1839, the building originally served as the Fifth Universalist Church, then later became home to the first synagogue in Boston. During prohibition, the building took a turn for the sinful, becoming a speakeasy called The Lido Venice. Over the years, the name changed yet the space remained a destination for good times and good music until the 1950s, when the Actor’s Company of Boston set up shop and the building took on the more thespian tone that still thrives today. The recent $2 million renovation, completed in December, features a remodeled lounge and lobby, new restrooms, an updated main stage theater and improved handicap accessibility. As always, Boston’s longest-running shows Blue Man Group (pictured) and Shear Madness play throughout the week at the Playhouse, so stop by 74 Warrenton St. to help them celebrate. —EJC BOSTONGUIDE.COM

The Winter Garden at The Shops at Prudential Center (refer to listing, page 25) in Back Bay is in full bloom this time of year.

Beds are tucked with seasonal displays of exotic greenery and a year-round line-up of laurels and palms, and the massive skylight overhead fills the hall with plenty of sunlight. It’s a welcome rest stop on a snowy walk around Back Bay, and you can indulge in a shopping spree while you’re at it. The FRog Pond Ice Skating Rink

T

he Boston Common Frog Pond is a fun destination for visitors year-round, whether they’re splashing in the shallow water during the summer or twirling on the ice in the winter. However, not many people are aware of the fact that they’re frolicking on the site of a prehistoric gathering place.

Generations ago, the Frog Pond sat as a natural spring along the shoreline of a tidal area where Back Bay stands today. Some of the oldest artifacts known to the city—including a 7,500-year-old spear point—were found there during an archaeological dig in 1986. Archaeologist Joseph Bagley analyzed them to create a portrait of Native American settlers living around the pond 8,000 years before European settlers arrived.

As time turned and the settlers of Boston established their city, the pond became a watering hole for the cattle kept on the Common, and legend has it that the Frog Pond earned its name from the soldiers of the Revolutionary War who hunted its amphibians for food. By the mid-19th century, the Frog Pond was

paved with stones and turned into a community gathering point. A large, ornamental fountain was placed in the center and was seen as a symbol of modern Boston. It debuted in 1848 at an extravagant Water Celebration commemorating the introduction of the city’s first public water system.

Throughout the city’s early history, Bostonians raced boats on the pond in the summer and skated when it froze over in the winter, yet shrinking city budgets eventually led to the pond’s decline. The pond leaked, and there was not always water to fill it, and the skating rink (constructed in the 1970s) failed from lack of maintenance. It was revived in 1995 when the city built a new skating rink and leased the whole facility to the Boston Common Frog Pond Foundation. Today the Frog Pond is co-operated with The Skating Club of Boston and is home to year-round projects and events. And you’ll still find a few friendly amphibians by the pond’s edge—four feet high, bronze-clad and ready for a photo op.

trolling along Beacon Hill’s picturesque gas-lit streets, brick sidewalks and Federal-style row houses, it’s not uncommon to feel as though you’ve travelled back in time.
