A four-night stay in Lisbon offers a chance to explore this colorful city of old-world neighborhoods adorned with gothic cathedrals, towers and tiny fado clubs. Visit the Moorish Alfama Quarter and UNESCO World Heritage sites of Jeronimo’s Monastery and the Tower of Belem before heading to the Portuguese Riviera and the royal city of Sintra and resort towns of Cascais and Estoril. Enjoy regional cuisine with wine accompanied by traditional fado music. On Portugal’s Silver Coast (named for the effect of the sun on the waves) you’ll discover sleepy villages and vineyards along with the sacred pilgrimage site of Fatima. Next, we fly to the Azores archipelago—a “jewel in the Atlantic”— and spend four nights in Ponta Delgada on St. Michael. You’ll visit the magnificent twin lakes (inside a volcanic crater) of Sete Cidades (Seven Cities), Lagoa do Fogo (Fire Lake), botanic gardens, hot springs and a tea plantation, historic Ribeira Grande, a liqueur distillery and the highest point on the island, scenic Nordeste. On Madeira, “the pearl of the Atlantic,” you’ll discover a dramatic mountainous landscape with a “spring all year round” climate. In Funchal you’ll see charming plazas, colonial mansions, the local market and an embroidery factory. The next two days are a whirlwind of traditional villages, banana plantations and vineyards and amazing scenery, including the world’s second highest cliff, and a traditional feast accompanied by folk dancers and music.
