Owen Maercks - Teenage Sex Therapist LP In 1978, if you were into out sounds, it was because you had a semi-lousy personality. Maercks had one, so he met everybody else who was the same. He tried out for Human Sexual Response & the Girls in Boston, played in MX80 briefly, made a record with Eugene Chadbourne. But mostly he was friends with fellow guitar abuser Henry Kaiser. Kaiser invited Maercks to visit California & record some too-smart, too-angry Roxy Music/Talking Heads pop originals. Maercks threw in Television-style protopunk as a bonus. Starting in spring 2015, construction of the new JP skatepark will commence with the help of FANCY LAD SKATEBOARDS, the DCR and Converse. The DCR will be matching an already sizeable donation from Converse to revamp this sick spot for skating and chilling. Thanks to Doug Moore and his company Colonial Technologies, the park is currently skateable and will be accessible to the public until the renovation begins. Go forth and shred. R VISIONS FOR CHINATOWN: A CREATIVE INVESTIGATION On the heels of the Boston Tenant Coalition and Right to the City’s June rally disputing Boston’s inclination towards low wages and soaring rent comes a creative investigation of Chinatown’s current housing situation. The Chinese Progressive Association (CPA) and its offshoot, the Wong/Yee Gallery, have organized R VISIONS FOR CHINATOWN, a weeklong series of pop-up art events to take place in Chinatown later this month. The program’s slogan, “Remain. Reclaim. Rebuild!” testifies to the 37-yearold association’s mission to address the area’s lack of affordable housing and community organization, as well as issues like the rise of encroaching developers and the subsequent displacement of local residents. A collaborative project between the individual artist and the community, the art on view (in any form or medium imaginable) aims to engage local residents in a dialogue about their ambitions for the neighborhood. Artist in Residence French artist FRÉDÉRIC SANCHEZ is a creative citizen of the world, briefly calling Boston home until 10/21, as the artist in residence in the Holzwasser Gallery at the NEW ART CENTER in Newton. Sanchez is a multi-disciplinary artist of Vietnamese, Spanish and Cretan decent, for whom travel is an integral part of his practice. He gathers inspiration by examining different places and cultures, then documents his findings by creating paintings, sculptures, objects, films and photographs. “It is a personal way to collect and record the complex information that I encounter when I am abroad,” says Sanchez. Lucky for us, Boston is his “abroad” at the moment. And abroad he has been, having lived, worked and exhibited in France, Vienna, Shanghai, and Germany, among other places. His annual trips to Vietnam have been a vital part of his practice since 2006 and may give you some insight to what drew him to participate in the current show @the Main Gallery in the New Art Center called Far from Indochine, where you can scope his larger-than-life painting For My People. While here, he’s keeping busy! This is the most idiosyncratic pop, but done with the panache, the sure-footedness (and hooks) that make me feel like a wider audience awaits these brilliant songs and whatever their talented author has next in store for us. For fans of Calgary’s former post-punk favorites Women, this past year has marked the point to finally wrap up the reminiscing and return to the righteous path of musical optimism. With three distinct debut releases, a trio of Calgarian bands have displayed their direct inheritance of Women’s gorgeously awkward musical markings: the left-field pop melodies of Faux Fur, the bipolar crash and crooning of Androgynous Mind, and the rhythmically robust stomp of VIET CONG. CASSETTE is a remastered re-issue of Viet Cong’s cassette-only tour demo from last year, now available on vinyl courtesy of MEXICAN SUMMER. An array of rock roots can be traced through Cassette‘s seven tracks, and MIKE WALLACE’s disciplined drum method provides a steady nucleus for the miscellaneous hooks to spiral outward from. “Throw It Away” sparks off the EP with strums of 70s punk before immediately involving sinuous lines of guitar pop. On “Unconscious Melody,” lumbering bass and drum interplay set the pace until the initial chorus cracks open a can of artfully aqueous guitar melodies. “Static Wall” is softened by its hazy psych pop leanings, indolently floating downstream as potent gusts of vocal harmony occasionally catch the sails. Viet Cong don’t adhere to a single aesthetic, and Cassette stands as a rare and rewarding glimpse of a very promising group at their genesis. - JP Galeotalanza

Saturday 10/18 Boston Hassle is hosting a conference between some of the best klout touting noise heavies on the Eastern Seaboard. A Punk Rock Remembrance

by WALLY RAMONE with ANTHONY SCIBELLI The following is an excerpt from A Punk Rock Remembrance, the upcoming memoir from Wally Ramone, punk rock icon and original harmonica player for The Ramones. When punk rock first appeared, birthed in the middle of 1970s New York City like a fat, angry baby, no one had ever seen anything like it. Its architects were renegades, madmen and weirdos, sometimes all three at once, like Lou Reed and Tommy Ramone. I’m sad to say that I never got a chance to speak with Tommy, despite being in a band with him for three years.

Unfortunately, their career fizzled after a fateful show at CBGB where they played so fast that the show somehow ended before it began. The audience was left confused, and Andy Warhol exited the show looking five minutes younger than when he had entered.

Punk was fresh, exciting and different, and no one was immune to its influence. Upon hearing “Blitzkrieg Bop” for the first time, actor Tony Randall bought a leather jacket, changed his name to “Tony Rotten” and pitched an Odd Couple spin-off in which his character is rewritten as a “scowling delinquent to better reflect my punk sensibility.”

Punk was never about musical talent. But its stars had charisma and attitude, like Elroy Switchblade, who not only never learned how to properly play guitar, but never even picked one up. Still, his passion on-stage and his presence were enough to make him an in demand guitarist, ending in his joining the punk rock outfit Beany and The Cecils, whose only album was described by Lester Bangs as “impossibly boring.” Truly, their live shows could not be captured in a recording.

Punk was hard to define. It was used to describe acts as diverse as The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Television, Toto, most car horns, Bob Dylan’s bornagain albums, the sound a bowl of Rice Krispies makes when you pour in milk and Jimmy Carter’s inaugural address. Punk was loud and fast, and few played louder

This one’s hardly fair; everybody’s seen GG Allin’s ghost. He, even after death, is looking for attention and performing “Needle Up My Cock” a capella while crapping himself in front of a pizza place in broad daylight on a Sunday afternoon would be one way to do it. Unfortunately for GG, ghost crap doesn’t really smell and you can seriously just walk right through him. GG Allin’s ghost is pretty sad.

Andy Rooney’s ghost is pssssssyyyyyyyccccchhheeeeddddddddd. Wandering around Manhattan, he is filled with the thoughts for a million different complaints to pitch to the ghost of Don Hewitt at their weekly lunch at the ghost cafeteria in the CBS building in advance of the next episode of Ghost 60 Minutes. He can be seen constantly looking at what people do with their phones. He generally stays out of other people’s way and is often referred to as one of the nicest ghosts in the city. I caught him watching the superhero and Elmo impersonators in Times Square while scribbling into a notepad that I assume he keeps in the pocket of his tweed ghost suit.

Hou’s films have ranged over the years from the autobiographical to the universal, from the present particular to the broadly historical, utilizing settings in his native Taiwan,

Following an already established career in Hollywood as a director, William Castle set out on his own and began his own independent production company in the 50s, taking his knack for showmanship to the nth degree. Castle churned out a series of B movies that have since become classics, in addition to some being remade by the Hollywood system he left behind: HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL (1959), THE TINGLER (1959), 13 GHOSTS (1960). What made these schlock fests more than what they were, however, were the ostentatious gimmicks that accompanied their screenings. I’m talking real skeletons flying over the audience on a wire or theater seats that would vibrate during the scariest scenes, not to mention ticket refunds for people too frightened to sit through the whole film. In celebration of Castle’s birth and just in time for Halloween, the Brattle Theatre is running a handpicked series of the impresario’s best. No refunds, though. - Pablo Torroella

For as long as there has been cinema, people have been experimenting and creating filmic works that break conventions in fas-

cinating and sometimes revolutionary ways. The past four decades in this country have been bountiful in regard to this, so it should come as no surprise that Japan has similarly produced a plethora of amazing works since the mid-70s. Of course, tracking these down and actually seeing them is no small obstacle if you don’t live on the other side of the planet. Luckily, Balagan Films and guest curator Tomonari Nishikawa (who is a great filmmaker in his own right) make it easy for you by presenting a number of rare works shipped straight from Nippon to your door (rather Emerson College’s Paramount Center). The films will be presented in their original formats (mostly 16mm) thanks to a generous grant from the Japan Foundation. Even better – the screening is FREE! - Stefan Grabowski

PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE CARNIVAL MAGIC (1981) DIR. AL ADAMSON 10/18, 11:30PM, $10, @BRATTLE

B movie exploitation legend Al Adamson is well known for weird independent sleaze such as SATAN’S SADISTS (1969) starring Russ Tamblyn. While he lived, Adamson kept his nose to the grindhouse pumping out quality, defiant John Carradine flicks and sub-BLACK BELT JONES Jim Kelly fare. In 1981, for what would turn out to be his penultimate film, he set his sights on making a family friendly feature. The film would be called CARNIVAL MAGIC. Released in 1981, Adamson’s film came out 14 years before they found his body hidden beneath the newly installed tile floor of his bathroom, the victim of a bad contractor (the worst I’ve ever heard of). In the years that fol-

lowed, the film was considered lost, with no known extant prints. It turns out that Adamson had hidden his own prints away in shame. Years after his death they were discovered, leading to the film’s revival & arrival on the cult circuit alongside other titles by the director. Don Stewart plays Markov the Magnificent, an illusionist on the decline... until he partners with a talking chimp named Alexander the Great! Before you know it the two are a big hit, but as they say: “mo’ money, mo’ problems.” Our dashing duo soon have to deal with the likes of an alcoholic lion tamer and an evil doctor. I mean jeez. Intended as a children’s film, the only problem was all the alcoholism, sex, and violence loaded into the picture. Ahhhhh, Al Adamson, you scuzzy rascal hero of yesteryear. Maverick cheeseball. Weirdo. In the halls of Psychotronic filmdom weasels such as Adamson have busts carved from stone in their honor. Wade in the sewer, children. IAIN FORSYTH AND JANE POLLARD @BRATTLE Australian renaissance man Nick Cave delivers a dramatized day in his life while creating his latest album, musing about his craft, personal history, and philosophy. Incredibly narcissistic? Maybe. But when you’re as talented as Cave, who cares? Also screens: 10/2.

UNEARTHED & UNTOLD: THE PATH TO PET SEMATARY (2014) dir. JOHN CAMPOPIANO & JUSTIN WHITE @COOLIDGE You love your pet. It dies. You bring it back to life with a magic graveyard. Your son dies. What do you do? Lambert’s PET SEMATARY freaked countless filmgoers and this documentary takes us behind the scenes to find out why. Also screens: 10/4. THE CROWD (1928) dir. KING VIDOR @SOMERVILLE This rare silent film is noteworthy for the scale of the production and sophistication of the camerawork. From the iconic shot scaling the sheer wall of a skyscraper to BRAZIL-like office interiors, the camera opens a window into everyday life in 1920s New York. HORSE MONEY (2014) dir. PEDRO COSTA @HFA Pedro Costa, a much-acclaimed Portuguese master of cinematic ascesis, is known for formally rigorous, brutal yet sympathetic portraits of people living and dying on society’s margins. BILLY WILDER @BRATTLE A must-see film noir from the classic era, it has all the tropes and clichés of the genre, yet manages to never be banal. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK (1981) dir. STEVEN SPIELBERG @KENDALL It belongs in a museum! Action, adventure, and Nazis galore in this mythology packed tale. Harrison Ford stars as the world’s most exciting archeology professor. Note to the college freshmen: this film is not an accurate depiction of studying archeology. Also screens: 10/11.

One of the last bastions of old-man taverns that used to pepper the outer-Bostonian cityscape. This shares a certain vibe with places like PA's Lounge and the long defunct, but always revered Triple D's in JP. It's a place where the same five old guys take the same five old stools at the same time, and stay, sentinel, for the rest of the night. All the while the younger set corral themselves in various corners of the palatial and well-lit periphery. There's always a pinball game in rotation, that admittedly works about half the time, but is always worth a go. The dart gaming areas are huge, and I imagine if you work for the dart regulations board and are reading this, I'll save you the embarrassment and tell you to not even bother pulling out yer measuring tape - that shit’s gotta be regulation. Whiners and first daters be damned, this place is no frills, with a refreshing absence of flattering lighting. - Nick Branigan
