Boston Compass #47

THANKS FOR PICKING UP COMPASS #47!

Last month I mentioned how important supporting TOURING BANDS is to our culture and the culture of independent music everywhere. But how do you support them? The easiest way is by donating $$ at shows and purchasing their wares. Simply put, showing up to a concert, film or gallery with a little to contribute is the least thing we can do for the hardworking people who give us a nightlife worth speaking of. Supporting independent art is truly righteous because you leave knowing you’ve contributed to the betterment of local culture and it’s karma back on ya for helping outta towners (a double win every night). But dollar bills aren’t the only way to contribute to the cause. You can organize yourself!

Monetary contributions are a necessity in this society but you can donate your mind or your time just the same. Aside from shelling out bucks, bringing artists to town, providing them a place to show their stuff and introducing them to like-minded Boston heads is one of the most noble and beneficial things you can do for your community. And you CAN do it. No matter what medium, you can take part in the sharing of art and ideas with the world around you. It’s more involved to be an organizer, but it’s more rewarding than just taking in these inspirational events. Either way you go is cool, being there is what’s important. So get in the flow and throw down at shows! - Sam Potrykus

AYKROYD - NARC DREAMS 7” OUT NOW ON BUFU RECORDS!

Carrying the torch of Boston’s weirded-out hostile rock scene and addressing last year’s house show scandal in song Aykroyd made a minor dent in 2013. Starting in February, doing two mini tours and shitting out a 7” inch before the end of the year ain’t too shabby. In 2014 they go on indefinite hiatus but thanks to Bufu Records Aykroyd will live on, on a 7”, on a shelf, on the floor in your house, on earth. Get yours at Weirdo Records in Central Square or Deep Thoughts in JP! BufuRecords.com -WB

RADICAL FLICK THANKS TO BALAGAN FILM SERIES!

This month The DocYard and Balagan Film Series Co-present The Punk Syndrome, a film about the essence of punk. It’s the story of Finland’s most kick-ass punk rock band, Pertti Kurikan Nimipäivät, whose members are all mentally handicapped. It’s about handicapped people rebelling against the mainstream and a band’s journey from obscurity to popularity. Plus filmmakers Jukka Kärkkäinen and J-P Passi will attend through Skype for Q&A! As always the Balagan crew is bringing a radical piece of film and its creators directly to you. Catch it Monday December 2nd @Brattle Theatre 7:30pm All Ages $10, $8 for students. -SP

VIC RAWLINGS: SOUND INSTALLATION @MOBIUS!

BOSTON COMPASS SEEKS MARKETING/ADVERTISING PRODS!

We feel good about our ability to organize within the art community and inspire others to do so, but we have some roles that need filling on our Marketing team. That’s why we are looking for folks who have some experience to join up and help keep this thing alive! Here’s your chance to employ your natural business talents while championing for independent press at the same time. Ensure the future of this damned rag by dedicating some serious time to hunting down supporters for it. This is a volunteer position, unless of course you’re nasty at it, then there’ll be money. Got a better idea? Let’s hear it! BostonCCC@gmail.com

DAVID DOMINIQUE’S NEW CD “RITUAL” OUT DECEMBER 3rd!

David is a composer and performer living in Somerville. He’s also a legit scholar of some of the most historically important experimental stuff that inspires so much of our culture. RITUAL for example is like a Charles Mingus record, a comparison that hardly ever gets drawn in our world because nobody’s got the right pencil. Well, Dominique and his band have GOT IT. Interesting and unique big band arrangements make his experimental jazz compositions both fit in traditionally and stand out entirely in this day and age. We highly recommend picking up his self released disc and getting to know this relevant musical mind. DavidDominique.Bandcamp.com -SP

IT’S GETTING COLD - CURL UP WITH A MOVIE!

Whether you’re watching from home or taking advantage of Boston’s cinema scene, movies are the perfect cure to those winter blues. This month catch the Coen Brothers series at the Brattle and French New Wave hero Francois Truffaut at the MFA. For more info check out the Film Flam on Page 3 of this issue. BOSTON COMPASS SEEKS DISTRIBUTION COORDINATOR!

We hate waste. We’re always trying to reduce the amount of paper wasted each month and find better homes for the stacks, but our crew is maxed out! We need a fresh head. We need a capable and dedicated person at the helm of this imperative honing process. Talkin’ taking initiative, organization, good communication skills and perhaps a knack for Greater Boston’s best haunts. This distro role is a VOLUNTEER position. Too busy for a real commitment? Feedback is helpful too! Tell us if our distribution sucks or not, we want to know: BostonCCC@gmail.com

GONDOLIERS - TONIGHT’S WHISPERING LP OUT NOW!

Last month Boston’s own Midriff Records released veteran twisted rockers The Gondoliers’ debut record! These dudes have been at it for some time, consistently combining nasty guitar and powerful synth sounds, primal drum fury and an in your face front maniac to make their point heard. Fresh off a European tour last month there’s no doubt you will be seeing these mad men back on the Boston grind in no time. You’ll know it’s them cause they’ll all be wearing the same outfit and bringing their noise rock shenanigans to the max in a dirty show space somewhere. MidriffRecords.com to scoop it! -SP

THE COMPLETE COENS @Brattle, December 9-19

FA R G O @ B R AT

TLE 12/ 11

Let’s get it out of the way right now: Joel and Ethan Coen are national treasures. If a director is to be judged solely by their body of work, the brothers easily rank among America’s greatest living filmmakers (for my money, their only real competition in this regard are Scorsese, Tarantino, and Spielberg). That body of work is playing in its entirety this month @Brattle, beginning with their audacious debut BLOOD SIMPLE and culminating with INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS (which premieres 12/20 @Coolidge). In between, there’s something for everyone, from white-knuckle thrillers (FARGO, NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN) to broad comedies (RAISING ARIZONA, THE BIG LEBOWSKI, O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU) to whatever the hell BARTON FINK is. Chances are, you’ve got a favorite film in this series – and if there’s any you missed the first time, you may walk away with a new one. - Oscar Goff

BOSTON VIEWFINDER

The first and greatest of the Indiana Jones trilogy (because we don’t talk about that alien one). The film sees Spielberg and Harrison Ford come together to create one of the most spectacular adventure films ever made. Also screens 12/3.

2

A digital restoration of Chris Marker and Pierre Lhomme’s dazzling cross-section of Paris circa May 1962 screens at the HFA on 12/1 with Lhomme in attendance and then in a weeklong run at the Kendall Square Cinema opening on 12/6. Adapting the then new lightweight cameras and sync sound capabilities that resulted in the first flowering of cinéma vérité (a label Marker instantly abjured), LE JOLI MAI provides the missing link between the groundbreaking auto-ethnography of Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin’s CHRONICLE OF A SUMMER (1961) and the more aggressive interview-interventions found in

marionette filmmaking @Coolidge @ Midnite, 12/13-12/14. u You’ve probably seen Frank Capra’s IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, but have you seen it on the big screen?! One of Jimmy Stewart’s most iconic performances set against a holiday exploration of the void. Includes Lionel Barrymore’s legendary turn as the villain Mr. Potter. An amazing film @Brattle, 12/20-12/23. u If you missed the restored version of THE WICKER MAN, which screened last month, you have another chance! Catch this all-time genre transcending classic at the ground zero source of this rare and unique 35mm print’s discovery. Starring Christopher Lee @HFA, 12/21. u DIE HARD turns 25 with a 12/2512/30 run @Brattle. One of the most recognizable and straight up fun action films of the 80s Absolutely one of Willis and director McTiernan’s best! Go see it on Xmas! - Dan Shea

WHO FRAM R O G E R R A B BE D IT ?

@C OO LID GE 12/9 In the ‘80’s, Hollywood movies became high-concept pinball machines. But WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT? has a soul. Its seamless mix of live-action and animation was groundbreaking in 1988 and still works today. Maybe that’s because every other element--while less flashy than a Daffy-Donald piano duel—is a prime example of craftsmanship: the 1940’s period detail, the jazzy score, and Bob Hoskins’ boozy private eye. It has a point, too: A riff on CHINATOWN, its villain is a greedy developer who wants to build freeways through Toontown and erect “a string of gas stations, inexpensive motels, restaurants that serve rapidly prepared food”. You know, the real enemy. - Jon Meyer

A HARD DAY’S NIGHT (1964) @BPL-HA dir Richard Lester Forever changing movie-musicals—and basically inventing the music video— the Beatles’ first feature exuberantly mixes toe-tappers, wacky comedy, and snappy suits. Some of the freewheeling bits hint at the group’s later subversive genius.

Godard’s MASCULIN FÉMININ (1966). The film’s inquisitive organization focuses our attention on the power structures underlying what sociologist Erving Goffman called “the presentation of self in everyday life”. One might easily take it as harbinger for the events six Mays later in 1968, but then radical exercises in empathy never go out of date. - Max Goldberg

THE 400 BLOWS (1959) @MFA dir Francois Truffaut The original adolescent rebel movie follows the exploits and woes of a 12-year-old French boy as he survives the misery around him. A centerpiece of the French New Wave movement.

PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE The immortal GREMLINS screens 12/6-12/7 at Midnite @Coolidge. Directed by the once great Joe Dante and starring the coolest little creatures (of the little creature movie fad of the 80s). The legendary Dick Miller also makes a memorable appearance (full disclosure, I am a charter member of the Dick Miller Fan Club). Find out what happens when you cook gremlin in the microwave. u THE STRANGE LOVE OF MARTHA IVERS is a great film noir starring Kirk Douglas (in his screen debut) and Barbara Stanwyck. Written by the legendary director/screenwriter Robert Rossen, this film screens as part of an amazing overview of Rossen’s tainted career in Hollywood @HFA, 12/13. u Trey Parker and Matt Stone (SOUTH PARK duh) offer up fart jokes and social commentary (their famous special blend) in TEAM AMERICA: WORLD POLICE. Feast your eyes on their foray into THUNDERBIRDS-style

ARMY OF SHADOWS (1969) @HFA dir Jean-Pierre Melville Produced in 1968, but not released in the U.S. until 2006, Melville’s classic is a beautifully shot yet haunting depiction of WWII-era France that tells a story of a few resistance fighters who risked certain death for liberation.

GREMLINS (1984) @Coolidge dir Joe Dante Kick off the holiday season with one of the meanest Christmas movies ever to come out of Hollywood! Join Gizmo, Stripe, and the rest @Coolidge... AFTER MIDNIGHT! Also screens 12/7.

Open Screen is Boston’s one and only open mic night for filmmakers! Share your film the way it was intended, projected in a dark room with lively strangers. Films (or selections) under 10 minutes. Signup at 7PM, screening at 7:30.

FARGO (1996) @Brattle dir Joel & Ethan Coen Perhaps the most well known and highly regarded Coen Brothers film to date. A car salesman has his wife kidnapped for money to help ease his financial troubles. Meanwhile, a pregnant cop closes in on the inept and psychotic criminals. SGT. PEPPER’S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND (1978) @BPL - HA dir Michael Schultz No Beatles here—just the BeeGees, Peter Frampton, Steve Martin, Alice Cooper, George Burns, and more struggling through assorted Beatles songs. It’s a mess—which is what makes it essential.

FINK 12 BARTON (1991) @Brattle

dir Joel & Ethan Coen The film follows on-thecusp-of-fame playwright Barton Fink as he moves to surreal L.A. to be a screenwriter. With a plot that refuses to be categorized into a genre or by the very rules of reality itself, this movie will hold you from start to finish.

13 MILLER’S CROSSING (1990) @Brattle dir Joel & Ethan Coen

A blend of subtle dialogue and gratuitous violence set in the gangster filled days of prohibition, this Coen Brothers film is a spectacular treat.

15 NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (2007) @Brattle dir Joel & Ethan Coen

You’ll never flip a coin the same way again after watching this noir/western that’s a masterclass in suspense. A terrifying Javier Bardem plays a ruthless hitman with a strict moral code and an affinity for cattle guns chasing local yokel Josh Brolin when the latter steals mucho mob money.

19 THE BIG LEBOWSKI

(1998) @Brattle dir Joel & Ethan Coen Absurd, quirky, and an instant classic, the Coen’s story about an LA slacker caught up in affairs beyond anyone’s understanding is still as funny as ever. So don your bathrobe, mix a White Russian and—Shut the fuck up, Donny!

WOLF OF WALL25 THE STREET (2013) @Coolidge dir Martin Scorsese

The love affair between DiCaprio and Scorsese continues in this new black comedy that explores the financial “shenanigans” of an unscrupulous New York yuppie. Gordon Gekko approved. DIE HARD (1998) @Brattle dir Martin Scorsese John McClane’s finest hour finds the wisecracking NY cop barefoot in Nakatomi Plaza, outwitting insanely organized German techno-thieves. Exemplary in visual pacing, it’s a classic Western at its core. Screens through 12/30. OF THE 26 BEASTS SOUTHERN WILD (2012)

YEP, CELEBZ by TD Sidell

HEY BACKWATERERS,

Gotcha! My run does involve you being pelted with colorful dust while you celebrate your healthy living and a je ne sais quoi of joie de vivre. You stand, under a glaring strobe beamed down from my official 5k helicopter, covered in the only rainbow that ever mattered: You.

Let’s play a game called

TRAVEL IN FARAWAY LANDS!

Angela Sawyer played this game recently. She saw 7 train stations, 2 subways, and 4 airports. She learned many secret things. Try to guess what they were!

Which country’s people: • Love words on shirts • Look like living versions of tube sock packs • Slobber all over themselves but never on others • Will kiss the air near other people’s faces for sanitary purposes, if pressed • Do not understand curbs • Know exactly how much liquid to put in a little bottle for poisoning • Never shut up about their favorite hilarious television show stars • Will debase themselves utterly to avoid the passenger seats of larger motor vehicles • Are never homeless • Disappear whenever it is dark • Wear soft baby tigers as neck accessories • Play soft, clear techno music in taxis • Loathe small clocks • Brazenly ignore the invisible movements of air molecules, or those molecules’ group interests • Arrest criminals by whistling • Smell exactly like a deep enthusiasm for goat sausage

Answers: A: Americans; B: Englishpeople; C: The French; D: Belgians

TOTAL REAL THINGS OF HISTORY by Chris Braiotta Last month marked the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy Junior Senior. A mourning nation looked to former Vice President Lyndon Johnson to put its pain into words of healing and inspiration. My fellow Americans, We join in grief at the loss of a shining leader. No words I or anyone else can say will heal the pain in our hearts. But I say this: his work is our work, and our work is not done. I also say this—have you ever noticed that the word “turtle” has “turd” in it? Hahaha I love that. First time I realized that I prayed. Swear to God. I said, “Lord in Heaven, thank you for your loving mercy on my tender ball sack ‘cus that is GOOOOOD.” Let the knowledge of God’s mercy on our nation’s tender ball sack be a light in our hearts at this time. This morning, I took the oath of office on an airplane. That means I am now the tallest president in history. You can check the record books on that. Got Lincoln by a good 20,000 feet.

The first thing I did when we touched down was

to go to the Oval Office and change out of a pair of chinos I’d had on since the previous day. Polyester is exactly like a widow’s pussy: holds a crease but doesn’t breathe for shit. Now, when I opened the closet to put those smelly bastards away, a piece of paper fell out. It was a patent application submitted by our 15th President, James Buchanan. Turns out he invented truck nutz for horses. Here in 1963 we haven’t even invented truck nutz for trucks yet, and this hundred years ago guy is putting big ol’ nuts on horses, the truck of his day. Hahahaha aw man, you should see the drawing. That ol’ horse was like “Why you gotta nail those things to my leg? I got a giant set of veiny purple bung-dusters as it is! Neeeeigh!” Hahahaha. It’s that spirit of restless imagination that will bring our country through these dark days. Aw fuckbuckles. It’s good to be alive. Until you aren’t. Signed, El BJ. That’s what the Mexicanos call me. Love those guys! Try a tamale some day, you sad honkies! Always put me in a good mood. They’re like wet popcorn with spices!

Rachel Uffner Gallery, LES Honestly, this month was super slow for celeb peeping (so just two this time). But I did see this dude (the guy who played the gross dude in Kids and another different kind of gross dude in The Wire) at an art thing. Having unfortunately seen Kids on a date like a million years ago (yes, I did pick the movie; no, the lady that I took and I are not happily married) I can only associate this dude with giving AIDS to 14-year-old girls. I have been informed, however, that this dude is very nice and has not in real life given AIDS to a 14-year-old girl, so I would like to say sorry I thought you were an AIDS-giving statutory rapist for all these years.

(FOR THOSE ACCUSTOMED TO FAILURE) by Nick Ortolani

• Invest in an electric blanket to help heat the side of the bed He/She used to sleep on. • Plant a vegetable garden in the backyard to remind yourself that once a year things will leave you. • Prepare for the future and enroll in life insurance. Now you just need to find a beneficiary. • Buy some baby clothes at the Salvation Army and fill them with dead leaves. Now you have something to yell at. • Stretch that dollar tighter by eating out less. Besides, there are no one sided tables anyway. • Take a vacation. You don’t have to travel far. Sometimes a vacation can just be you, in your room, wearing a bathing suit and bow tie, drinking clamato out of a plastic turtle, looking up horse pictures on the internet and photoshopping yourself into them. Paradise! • Get ECO friendly: both -ology and -onomy! Use everyday recyclable items around the house. Don’t stop there. Utilize common disposables. Build a trash palace and become the Garbage King of the Stink Lands. • Organize your belongings around the house. Devise a system that makes sense. For instance, locks of hair should be kept away from heat sources, and the clothes your ex left behind should be kept in air-tight plastic bags to preserve maximum memories. • Save money by clipping coupons, then using your saliva to stick them to the walls of your room to make a heat-saving cocoon. • Spend more time with family and friends. They’re all in the same graveyard anyway (the earth)!

for standalone images: please include it in the body of your email. Give your thing a title. Tell us your name.

You’ll hear a loud bang, some rustling (or is that your own fleeting breath?), then silence. Suddenly, someone starts running. More people lift and lower their legs, and you follow, because you paid $45 for this run and you can’t waste a minute. If only everyone thought like you, un-

A bang. Then another and another and another. You’re hit, your fanny pack contents leaking without end. You stop. A white light.

It begins at dusk, in a parking lot outside your city. Any city, really; they’re all the same to me now. You and your fellow runners will stand, making small talk, clad in the requisite uniform of skin-sucking clothing and mesh fanny sacks filled with waters and energy gels. Packing heavy may be at your peril, but you don’t know that yet.

derstood the shrill screams of “carpe diem!” that come from the vultures that are suddenly flying just feet above your head, their heavy wings pounding like tired eyes blinking, your eyes blinking as you strain to see because you can’t see. Your eyes are gaping yawns, the ultimate blind banality, but you can feel the ground, and it goes from concrete to a sticky mud, swallowing your legs whole like a ravenous reptile. Keep going! Keep going! Never mind the giant squirrels nipping at your skin or the cries for help among your fellow lungers. Oh, you’d like to help them? Would you?

Send us your weirdest printable stuff, following these guidelines, to tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com

I wanted you to know about the world’s most important 5k. You probably think you’ve heard of my run, but you’d be wrong: it doesn’t involve colorful dust or tutus or the thump-thump of pop hits as you jog by people who pretend they love you. Because no one really loves you. Think I’m wrong? Come, join my run.

In case you forgot, TD Sidell moved to NEW YORK CITY, and therefore has seen many celebrities. He figured that you guys were sick of trading stories about seeing Dropkick Murphy (that’s just one dude right?) at a Shaw’s or Ernie Boch Jr. eating at Whalburgers or whatever and that he would ENRICH YOUR LIVES with some tales of all the amazing celebs he got to see with his own eyes RIGHT IN FRONT OF HIS FACE. This list should appear monthly or until all celebrities leave New York.

KENNY ROGERS:

TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN LOVE (VOL. 1) by Jessica Campbell The lights were dim. Or, rather, there were no lights. No, there was no lighting whatsoever, save a tiny sliver creeping in from the small, distant streetlamp through a miniscule window. So, a diminutive amount of light, though certainly enough to illuminate the miniature attic that his hulking mass occupied, almost to the room’s limits. The minute amount of space not filled by his large person was neatly filled with a soiled green easy chair on which he sat, and a side table that was directly adjacent to him. It was also soiled, but not so much so that he was distracted away from what it supported–a faded red rotary phone, long technologically surpassed. No, he would not be distracted from the sole object

How to cope with the holiday season:

KEIRA SAYS:

The Place That I Work, Williamsburg

This person was super super drunk as we were closing the bar down a few weeks ago and it was sad. He/she was all red-faced and stumbling around looking for people to talk to him/her, and it was a serious bummer. I’m choosing not to name this person because who among us has not had one (or many) of those nights. I hope that one day when I’m barely-recognizably famous, I can depressingly wander around a closed bar, staring at the floor and wondering why I only got to barely recognizable when others have totally reached the heights of medium-famous and can get the benefit of the doubt from that up-andcomer behind the bar as he plots to supplant me in the great hierarchy of fame. Besides, I generally like this person’s work, and it isn’t like this dude/lady is super famous/worthy of the embarrassment that comes from my righteous pen. OH HOW I WISH HE/SHE WAS!

ANGELA’S XMAS WISHLIST - A mechanical parakeet - Sorry, that's actually the whole list.

of his attention, for it was so rife with erotic promises that his eyes could not be dragged away. Oh, that it would ring! He suckled his white moustache, bit his upper lip, and expelled a nearly inaudible groan of anticipation.

HOLIDAY EDITION!!!!!

RYAN SAYS:

SEMI-FAMOUS CHARACTER ACTOR

DOs Buy a DVD copy of Crazy, Stupid, Love, “smile” with family, bring a bottle of wine to what people call your room (but you know), play the DVD copy of Crazy, Stupid, Love, staring at the ceiling, holding onto the bottle with both hands, never opening it. DON’Ts Try to express the feelings you’ve never been able to put into words. What Ryan said.

Was he smoking a cigar? He thought of this question too, but the answer was no. No, he knew that the power of his sensually provocative voice could not be tempered by smoke, lest it lose any of its authority. His authority, of course, was the reason for which women around the world could not resist calling his illicit 1-900 number, their husbands and phone bills be damned. True, it had been a risky and costly move, having a phone sex line hooked up to the house, but the hundreds of hours of sexual arousal that it begat had more than paid the phone bills; they filled the wank bank. Building a secret phone room in the home he shared with his wife had been an erotic adventure in itself. Sure, the building of a sound booth for his country music singing career had given him an easy excuse to do the necessary construction, but coming up with reasons why the attic space now seemed mysteriously smaller was increasingly difficult. The real reason was, of course, that part of it was hidden behind an erogenous false wall of lathe, plaster and semen. But this was not an excuse she would have found tolerable and, thus, he found himself perpetually scrambling to keep her from questioning him on the matter. Kenny Rogers was in a bind, and not the kind he liked.

Sneaky Pinks

Harold Budd

I’m Punk/Puke Pudding Almost Ready Records (2013) I’m pretty sure that listening to this song kills the same amount of brain cells as huffing a garbage bag of glue. SNEAKY PINKS are the stranger and grosser bastard child/sister wife/ slack jawed cousin of the artist who prefers to be known as NOBUNNY, emerging from the loins of the hare sometime in the mid-2000s. They only managed to crap out a couple of 7″s before kind of disappearing but thanks to ALMOST READY RECORDS, our ears can experience a fresh load of sonic diarrhea. There’s nothing to “I’M PUNK”, in fact you already know what it sounds like before hearing it. A little rock-n-roll song that doesn’t stick around for too long, “I’M PUNK” pogos around in your head for a couple of minutes, blowing it’s nose all over your clothes, taking a shit on top of your kid, etc. before collapsing in a pile of it’s own filth. This is exactly what you’d expect from the lyrical savant who is responsible for writing things like “I want a blowjob, I want a hot dog.” Think of “PUKE PUDDING” as dessert you never should have eaten, and hope that there is someone there to hold your hair back. Available on purple vinyl, this would be an excellent gift for that hard to shop for scumbag you wish you weren’t friends with. - Christine Moore

Saralee

Perhaps Root Strata (2013) Performed and recorded in memoriam of James Tenney, his friend and former colleague at Cal Arts, Perhaps (Root Strata) is an understandably reflective and meditative exercise for Harold Budd. Budd is a renowned avant-garde composer and pianist who has long interacted with minimalism and free jazz over the course of his career, and Perhaps, a continuous 75-minute solo improvisation, has the calm, controlled energy of a master. Budd’s use of space is delicate but powerful. With gentle pedal work he streams impressionistic harmonies through clusters and common tones. Interestingly, by allowing the necessary time for each chord to ametrically ring into and away from itself, Budd creates a fluid forward motion though patient restraint. Using the piano’s harmonic decay as a mechanism for musical growth could comment on the nature of death he is presumably addressing in the piece as a whole.I’m sure there are allusions and motivic elements that are way over most of our heads, but analyzing the minutia of this piece seems beyond the point. This is a gorgeous moment in time honoring the passage of a larger-scale “moment” in time. Perhaps is successful because it makes the listener aware of the beauty and finality of both. - Patrick Collins

Godflesh

Self titled Ride The Snake Records (2013) After a couple delicious demos, Boston guitar-drums duo SaraLee have finally released their first full length, an eponymous LP off Cambridge’s DIY pride RIDE THE SNAKE RECORDS. The album is a continuation of their rough and tumble sound, aided by a cleaner production that goes to show these guys don’t rely on the ‘lo-fi’ aesthetic to get their point across. SaraLee recall the exhilaration and emotional tumult of surf rock, yet are bereft of any explicit sonic tropes that characterize Dick Dale era-instrumentation or the hazy garage pop revival of the last decade. Instead, they are a surf band of the heart, one that channels the rapidly changing emotional currents into propulsive streams surging ever forward towards the sea. The stark instrumentation and organic, loosely flowing style make for an emotionally arresting combo. The swelling tempo quickly rises and falls in tempestuous bursts above a deep, earnest undercurrent. The drums roll and crash with a driving tidal rhythm as jangly sharp guitar chords pummel on the beach of disaffection. Themes of isolation, disappointed relationships and the ebb and flow of life’s tribulations are communicated with biting clear insight in singer Sara’s cutting croon. All this makes for profoundly stirring mood, one that paradoxically provokes both quiet introspection and a passionate desire to escape it all in those fast moving rhythms. SaraLee play a kind surf rock for the land-locked, music fit for a goldfish energetically swirling in its lonely bowl, yearning to be flushed - if only to be closer to the sea. - Chris Collins

Form A Log

The Two Benjis Decoherence Records (2013) Actually grabbed a tape copy of this cycle of wheezing bleats from FORM A LOG last they dipped into Jamaica Plain’s basement society. If only we could actually build secret doors between these clandestine venues then we would REALLY have something going on (architects and contractors please get in touch). This is subterranean music right here made by the LOG trio of Schofield (aka Container), Weaver (aka Dinner Music), and Anthony (aka Profligate, who just blasted an intense set out @ Hassle Fest 5). If you like to get freak-ayyy these dudes are speaking unto you. Their live show is an astounding execution of live tape manipulation melded to scattered and skittering electronic beat experiments and musique concrete dispatches. DECOHERENCE RECORDS can be blamed for putting this one to vinyl which jogged my memory eliciting the self directed demand, “I must write about THE TWO BENJIS!” Tape snippets waft in and out of this often woozy beat centered murk a log, mutating and metamorphosing and slowly being absorbed into the slowly growing momentum of the track itself. Industrial thud and garbled transmissions groan beneath ethnic instrumentation and an omnipresent noisy haze. Bass drops coexist with off human sounds and are coaxed along by pulsing techno arpeggios or wobbling creak beats depending on where you dive in. “Diamond Pressure” gives us most of this band’s spectrum in one fell swoop. Bits of tape and cheapo electronic sounds are harnessed initially in creating a maddening and dense pulse until the fade to a foreground arpeggiating synth which eventually delivers us to white noise. These are wild out of bounds sounds for courageous fans of exploring the outer bounds of electronic music making. You must ask yourself, are you with us? - Dan Shea

F.O.D. flexi Released with issue #109 of Decibel magazine The Godflesh – F.O.D. (Fuck Of Death) flexi, released with issue #109 of Decibel magazine, is the first new material by the band to be released since 2001. Recorded by original members Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death, Jesu) and G.C. Green, the song is a cover of a Slaughter song from their 1987 album Strappado. The song shows Godflesh’s signature industrial metal style, equal parts early Swans and heavy metal. While the riffing in the song gets a bit tedious, the song is still a decent cover. More importantly, the flexi – as well as the set lists for the for their recent slew of shows – shows Godflesh playing more in the vein of their earlier releases, with a focus primarily on Streetcleaner and Pure. Broadrick confirms that the new album will be in this style, although he says there will be “a few songs with hip-hop beats,” which sounds more like an indication that songs will sound more like tracks from Songs Of Love And Hate. Either way A World Lit Only By Fire is something to look out for in 2014, along with the rescheduled US tour dates. In the meantime, F.O.D. (Fuck Of Death) is here to whet your appetite. - Chris Defalco

Soupcans

Parasite Brains Telephone Explosion (2013) Alright class, it’s time for a lesson on how to make a gritty, psychotic ripper of an album. Open your textbooks to the chapter on Soupcans; these trashy Toronto punks (Telephone Explosion) are pumping out some of the weirdest, ripest tunes imaginable. Case in point: their new Parasite Brain EP, that reads like a story of the grimiest Saturday night escapade. The album writhes to life with it’s namesake track, pulling you off your couch with its jerking, blistering riffs and pushing you into a night of rage-driven, frenetic antics. “No Teeth” starts up and you’re stealing a motorbike and revving the engine in a backalley until the thing belches smoke as thick as tar. Before you know it you’re in a grimey dive breaking pool cues over the bartender’s head, and as glasses shatter “Weedopolis” keeps crunching away with its booming no-fucks-given guitar. “Crimes of the Future Pt. II” whirls up and you’re stumbling home, head throbbing, leaking vomit on the stack of Yellow Pages you tripped over as those guitars dive and bend. You manage to make it home but can’t get your pants off without throwing a tantrum, so “Lost Drugs” storms along like ultra-pissed out-oftune 80s hardcore sung by a drooling drunk. And as the rotary distortion of “2 Much” howls, as the vocals bark and spin out, you fall face-first into a nightmare landscape, chased a pitchblack landscape by packs of seething wolves… The moral of the story, class, is that there is no excuse for you to not be listening to Soupcans right now. Stream this monstrous EP on the Boston Hassle website and be sure to peep the band’s bandcamp for physical release dates. - Dean Antonio

Last month I left on the tip of the iceberg of how I hear noise: if most of the music in our lives is a combination of texture, rhythm and harmony, noise is when you remove one of those three. No harmony? No New York is your 101 shit. No rhythm? Black Dice’s 04-05 work comes to mind. No texture? I’d like to hear that. What about when you take away two? Just rhythm… this gets us into a campfire as much as does into Chris Corsano. Square one, linguistically speaking. Just harmony? Well that’s some of the oldest music we’ve got and far away from anyone’s idea of noise. Just texture? Either we’re ambient (noise’s best bro) or waste deep in Raw Meet. Might be cool to get into some “what is texture?” shit down the line. It’s overwhelming to consider. But what this says to me is how resiliently anti-genre noise is. If it doesn’t have a sound, it has a community. What makes this community special is how it brings virtually every discipline together. If you get bored making jazz, electronic, classical or whatever, noise is the Wild West; untamed and unbent to any mainstream/monetary agenda. It’s a place where I see two crazy things happening. First, noise, as music, gets fused with the extra-musical: comedy, dance, storytelling, performance art - anything. Universes collide. Second; new phrases, new rhythms, new colors, as in the straight up invention of music. Sometimes it feels like the last alchemic front we’ve got. - Wes Kaplan

STORY HI

In Federal Court on December 23 2004 the City of Boston repealed Police Rule 75, effectively permitting busking and the display and sale of artwork in Boston’s public spaces. Police Rule 75, enacted in 1950, placed numerous restrictions on “itinerant” musicians performing for tips. Musicians were required to obtain licenses issued by the police commissioner, and in a large portion of the city including the Back Bay, South End and North End, licensed itinerant music was permissible only from 6-9pm and excluding Sunday. Licensed female musicians had to be accompanied by a licensed male musician.

Stephen Baird of the Jamaica Plain-based Community Arts Advocates filed a federal suit to repeal Police Rule 75 in August 2004 “to protect artists’ and performers’ freedom of expression in Boston.” In the suit Baird describes repeated incidents where Boston Police and Park Rangers violated his First Amendment rights. In one incident a park ranger on Boston Common ordered him to stop playing his hammered dulcimer, insisting that he needed a permit to do so. Neither the Parks Department nor the City of Boston issue permits to play on Boston Common, making it impossible for artists to comply with such demands and thus denying their Consitutional right to free expression. With this repeal no permit or license is required to perform or exhibit art publicly in Boston. If an artist is not blocking the flow of pedestrian and vehicle traffic and is not disturbing the peace, there are no legal grounds for an officer of the law to interfere with the artist’s work. Despite this fact the harassment of buskers continues, as does Mr. Baird’s advocacy. Neil Horsky • horskyprojects.com
