BRAIN Reminder: What We Do Here BRAIN Arts Org -- the non-profit entity that organizes Boston Hassle shows, the BH website, and this here paper, Boston Compass -- has a clearly defined mission: Foster an innovative, compelling, and interconnected music, art, and film community in the greater Boston area through grassroots and inclusive participatory culture. But we still get asked all the time what it is that we do. So what is it, really, that we are up to every Monday night? Well, Boston’s music and art communities have suffered due to the combined forces of rising rents, a lack of available real estate, a dearth of creative jobs, and a lack of state and city level support. BRAIN Art’s true goals revolve around figuring out solutions to these problems, and in the meantime creating as many opportunities for artists and musicians to exposure locally and around the world via the ever-growing reach of our media efforts. Shows and performances, dance nights, art / artisan markets, the Hassle website & the Compass newspaper: all have potential to grow. With our show booking concern alone we generated $22,000 last year to pay touring and local bands to do their thing, including our annual Hassle Fest and NEUMF.
We exist to be used by the creative people of Boston and New England as a medium to further the reach of their music, art, and ideas. No one in the organization gets paid for making any of the aforementioned happen; we are all volunteers acting with a love of the arts and a love of New England. It is an exciting time for us: we have an amazing new website (bostonhassle.com), great new web content, more shows than ever, and new projects afoot such as our burgeoning education initiative. We meet every Monday in Harvard Square @the Democracy Center if you ever want to stop by. BRAIN Arts Org is here to stay.

New OLD WAVE, Good. Buy 5/3 You know people who say “I like all music except rap and country”? Well, those people suck. But I still want to welcoome them into the light whenever possible. And one worthy glow shines from right here in JP - OLD WAVE. This crew is by far the best band to aid the masterful songwriting of Pancho the Kid, and they’re dropping their first official Compact Disc on us next month, 5/3 @Deep Thoughts, in all its funky, country-rock songsmithery and Grateful Dead and Neil Young-channeling glory. A rare breed in this day and age indeed. Appreciate country. Appreciate Old Wave. Playing the Boston Hassle-booked Wake Up The Earth Fest afterparty @Spontaneous Celebrations on 5/2 too. - Sam Potrykus

A RIVER COURT RUNS THROUGH Last month I cruised north to Portland with my #1 QT to celebrate her 27th and lay out a contingency plan were she to be the next rockstarheartthrob inducted into a club of immortal contemporaries. At STRANGE MAINE I snagged a copy of RiVER COURT, a charming piece of print stylistically similar to MOTHERS NEWS with the sardonic introverted air of our own TARDY EAGLE page, including full page prints and my favorite: lists. One highlighted feature: “Objects Most Likely To Be Stared At This Year When Zoning Out As You Hear They Don’t Love You Anymore.” Hitting a total wall finding the folks involved with this mystery rag. TAKE THE HIGHWAY TO THE RANGER ZONE Most comedy hosts don’t actually act like hosts in the truest sense of the word. Thankfully, there is Aimee Rose Ranger! Her welcoming style + fan-fucking-tastic, imaginative storytelling + stand-up that immerses you into her world + wonderful variety of Boston’s best stand-ups + other dope storytellers and poets thrown in for measure = one of the best and most engaging nights that’s popped up in some time. You’re always in for a surprise: Rob Crean pretending to be a snowplow, Aimee Rose dismembering a teddy bear, whathaveyou. Also how could the Kenny Loggins reference in the show’s name just not completely win our hearts and minds? See ya there, every 1st and 3rd Sunday 4/5 and 4/19 @ZuZu 10pm Free - Katie McCarthy

THE PAPER CIRCUS IS COMING TO TOWN! Since Day One of the Film Flam, we’ve dreamt of hosting our own screenings. Who wouldhave guessed that one would drop into our laps from heaven? Or rather, from Italy. Luca Dipierro is an illustrator and animator worth his weight in gold. Paper Circus is his collection of animated shorts featuring sorrowful puppets cut out from old book cloth and paper, ghosts, a woman giving birth to a fish, etc., etc. Dipierro teams up with fellow countryman, dear friends of the hassle, total sweethearts but also rather unnerving experimental noise band Father Murphy to perform a live soundtrack to the screening! @Out of the Blue Too Gallery on 4/21. - Ari Shvartsman
Our woman/manpower is maxed out, and we’re looking for a fresh face to help turn Art Blast online from a girl into a woman. Art Blast aims to make Boston art more visible and visited by the public with a focus on the FREE and educational, while serving as a platform for opportunities and resources for the local art community to reach a worldly audience. What does this editorial role require? Developing and managing featured art contet (daily events, past event coverage, videos, interviews, profiles, etc.). Managing and working with volunteer writers, copy editors and social media team weekly. Working with our growing A/V crew to create more original content (interviews, studio visits, demos, event coverage) and anything else you want to bring to the table. This is a great opportunity for someone with a genuine drive and interest in local and worldly art to gain experience as a Managing Editor for a website. Wanna know more? In his eerie pieces, signifiers of white culture - from crystal chandeliers to Disneyland to a mushroom cloud - are seamlessly woven into exuberant tropical landscapes. On closer inspection, the wild jungle is a banana plantation, itself a product of colonialism. The work points to the impossibility of a colonizer/colonized dichotomy because the colonizer has permeated everything, even the natural world. If you've got the time, you may want to drop in on this durational performance by Australianborn conceptual artist TONY SCHWENSEN. NOTE: a durational performance is just that— one that takes place in real time and where time is a major element of the piece. The theme of Subservience explores the myths generated around nationhood and how they are morphed, spun, and transformed across different populations and through time. LECTURE: Installation Artist/ Sculptor Janet Echelman
Ever wonder what it’d be like if aliens left massive, unfathomable Christmas lights all over our cities? Or, if you’re an adult, have you ever wondered what feats of imagination take place in the mind of one of the world’s foremost installation artists? Boston’s own JANET ECHELMAN weaves titanic, yet elegant, ethereal sculptures out of industrial netting that shift in color and seem more the product of humongous fluorescent spiders than mere mortal hands. Her works have been seen in cities and museums the world over, and her Boston debut is coming this spring to the Rose Kennedy Greenway.

kijidome Traditionally, the ICA’s biannual Foster Prize is awarded to a single artist, but this year curator Jenelle Porter shook things up a bit. Rather than focusing on the individual, Porter chose to recognize two artist collectives and two performance artists. As a result, this year’s prize has shed its competitive edge and has instead made room for a more collaborative, symbiotic and exploratory atmosphere. This is exactly the kind of context the members of kijidome — an experimental exhibition space in the South End and one of the 2015 recipients — like to work within. The project is run by four local artists: LUCY KIM, CARLOS JIMÉNEZ CAHUA, SEAN DOWNEY and SUSAN METRICAN (big points to you if you can figure out where the name “kijidome” comes from). “We started over a conversation about the need for more artist-driven initiatives in Boston,” says Downey, “and the sense that among the four of us we had ideas for shows and projects that we would like to see.” The founding of kijidome, admits Downey, was largely inspired by “a feeling of exhaustion and boredom with that ‘What does Boston need?’ dialogue that keeps coming up, but which always seems to assume some sort of top-down infrastructural solution” — a discouraging conversation we all know well. Rather than counting on rents miraculously being lowered or the appearance of new buildings dedicated to working artists, Kim, Jiménez, Metrican and Downey took matters into their own hands. BASTARD SAPLING
INSTINCT IS FOREVER GILEAD MEDIA/ FORCEFIELD RECORDINGS (2014))
I remember the first time I heard “Bleed”—one of the tracks off of Meshuggah’s obZen LP. The first thing I wanted to do was take a rest, because listening to it was exhausting—I had to listen to it a couple of times to figure out how they managed to make it so complex and yet keep it from turning into a shapeless ball of noise. Second thing that I wanted to do was to ask, “What in the world was that? How did they come up with it?”
BASTARD SAPLING share little with Meshuggah either geographically or musically—they hail from Richmond, VA and play a brand of crusty black metal. Yet, the reaction that I had to the first track off of their LP INSTINCT IS FOREVER was almost exactly the same as the one I had to “Bleed.” Once it was over, I wanted to take take a breath and figure out what it was that just passed by my ears.
In a matter of seven minutes, “My Spine Will Be My Noose” jumps from an ambient intro to all-out blastbeat destruction to a melodic finale. To top it all off, there are also piercing screams from lead singer MIKE PAPARRO—who’s clearly channeling his inner Thomas Lindberg. If that’s not enough to make your head spin, there are eight more tracks ahead, and only a few of them manage to keep it under the fiveminute mark.
The palette of sounds gets even more diverse as the record moves along—there’s ambiance, traces of post-punk and post-rock, choirs, and clean singing to be found all over it, but what keeps it all together is melody surrounding all the dark grandeur.
You can pick up Instinct is Forever from GILEAD MEDIA. -Ilya Sitniko
After years of deranged live performances as well as several EPs and demos, TOXIC STATE RECORDS has finally unleashed the debut full-length by NYC goth-punk provocateurs ANASAZI. NASTY WITCH ROCK is both the title and the description, and the record proves that this group stands out in their increasingly crowded genre.
D'ANGELO
BLACK MESSIAH RCA (2014) BLACK MESSIAH asks: why aren’t more artists mining the insanely rich sounds of soul and funk, and the opportunities for experimentation that they offer? For this reason alone D’ANGELO’s new album should be a cause for African-Americans (and people of all other ethnicities) to rejoice. But especially those American persons of African descent, for this music is as pure and loving a musical celebration of a musical lineage as there can be. Hopefully this album is a call to arms for a whole culture of music that has, in most meaningful ways, faded into the background. I can’t recall the last album that was so deeply steeped in the history of recent Black music and did such an amazing job of celebrating it. If you are familiar with Sly & the Family Stone, Al Green, Funkadelic, Prince, Outkast, and new jack swing, then all you have to do is listen and you will hear it all seeping from this album. Identifiable, yes, but part of the foggy and strangely filtered whole that D’Angelo has so artfully woven together as Black Messiah. I knew D’Angelo was an incredible singer and songwriter, but I am beyond pleasantly surprised to get in touch with the odd and intoxicating sounds that he has drawn together in the construction of this new, wild R&B quilt. Check out the deep bassy undulations of “1000 Deaths,” the grinding churn and grimy bass sounds, the distorted vocals. Industrial funk?! “Ain’t That Easy” boasts that easy swagger that D’Angelo is well known for. Bass bouncing, perfectly distorted. Multi-tracked vocals coming at you every which way, the gospel continuum in 2015, stunningly executed. QUESTLOVE and PINO PALLADINO must be saluted for whatever hand they had here in creating the copious wobbling rhythms of Black Messiah. Released by RCA. Fuck RCA. Long live D’Angelo. -Dan Shea
As always, visit www.BostonHassle.com for vids and streams of all the artists and albums profiled here! In 1873, moral authoritarian Anthony Comstock and his New York Society for the Suppression of Vice lobbied Congress to pass an Act for the “Suppression of Trade in, and Circulation of, Obscene Literature and Articles of Immoral Use.” Under the Comstock Law, mailing and in certain instances possessing “obscene” materials was illegal, including pornography, erotica, sex toys, sex education materials, and contraceptives. Many critics considered the law an invasion of privacy and a denial of civil liberties. They claimed the law would fail to discourage sexual deviance, which could not be legislated away. Moreover, they argued that conflating contraception and sex education with obscenity would only serve to exacerbate the social, economic and public health consequences of unwanted pregnancy. Decades later in the Lower East Side slums of New York City, nurse Margaret Sanger witnessed these consequences daily. Caring for poor women infected or mutilated from shoddy “back-alley” abortions, she dedicated herself to promoting contraception as a preventative measure. Sanger illegally distributed dozens of publications on sex education, coining the term birth control. In 1916 she founded an illegal birth control clinic in Brooklyn, continuing to operate it even after multiple arrests and jail sentences. In 1921 she founded a national advocacy organization, the American Birth Control League (ABCL). Its charter states: “We hold that children should be (1) conceived in love; (2) born of the mother’s conscious desire; (3) and only begotten under conditions which render possible the heritage of health. Therefore we hold that every woman must possess the power and freedom to prevent conception except when these conditions can be satisfied.” Meanwhile in Boston, obcenity censorship was rampant. With support from Mayor James Michael Curley, the prude and powerful Watch & Ward Society suppressed plays, novels, speeches and other communiqués deemed unsavory – “Banned in Boston” became a popular phrase and code for racy content. Sanger planned visits to Boston on several occasions but the Mayor forbade her to speak publicly, threatening her with prosecution. Sanger and a host of other controversial figures were invited to speak on April 16, 1929 at Boston’s Ford Hall Forum, a lecture series initiated by political dissidents in 1908 to promote open dialogue on social issues. Cleverly appropriating her Boston speaking ban, she took the stage with a gag over her mouth as press flashbulbs strobed about the forum. Harvard Professor Arthur Schlesinger stood beside and recited her prepared statement, which read in part, “The authorities of Boston may gag me, they do not want you to hear the truth about birth control. But they cannot gag the truth.” The ABCL continued its advocacy, earning doctors the right to prescribe contraceptives in 1938, and the following year forming the Birth Control Federation of America, now known as Planned Parenthood. Sanger witnessed in 1965 the legalization of birth control in the U.S., a year before her death at the age of 86. Although this and subsequent rulings overturned much of Comstock Law, some amended provisions remain on the books to this day including a $250,000 fine for mailing unsolicited information on abortions. While many contemporary dark-punk bands blend their hardcore influences with that ever-popular Mancunian Factory Records gloom or the equally British Batcave sound, there's something delightfully, wickedly American in Anasazi’s take on the style. There’s a twang to some of the guitars which brings to mind the lunacy of The Cramps or The Gun Club. The California of the 1980s which gave us Christian Death and TSOL also factors in, and there’s more than a little bit of the high-tension swampy degeneracy of The Birthday Party (who were Australians living in the UK but drawing from American Southern Gothic sound and imagery). Thankfully, even while wearing these influences proudly, Anasazi manage to keep their sound modern by embracing a raw, blown-out production style and injecting their songs with a violent, cacophonous looseness. The end result captures the spirit of their live shows far better than any of their previous output. There are enough little changes to the formula to keep things interesting (the female vocals on “Morbid Native” are a nice touch), and the packaging, which includes a poster and lyric booklet, is a gorgeously screened work of art unto itself. One of the boldest statements of our young year. -John Bittrich
M. DWINELL GOLDEN RATIO AMISH RECORDS (2015)
M. DWINELL’s GOLDEN RATIO is a curious thing. On this LP, Dwinell plays an electric organ using “a natural tuning system generated from the harmonic series,” which will only make sense to music theory geeks. But as I understand it, this partly means that the organ is tuned according to principles from a time when European musicians had different ideas about octaves and intervals than we do now. The difference is subtle to modern ears, but the harmonies on Golden Ratio have a buoyancy and candy-like sweetness of calm intensity. The compositional style is more contemporary than the tuning, using long arpeggiated passages that seem to freeze time even as they infinitely kaleidoscope before you, spaced between tracks of expansive drones. The whimsical tone of the organ helps give the album a slightly quirky sound, which lends to the virtual sense of being transported through minimalistic and softly psychedelic soundscapes of gyrating carnivalesque wonder and rainbow-colored clouds. Go order a copy from the most excellent Amish Records. It comes with a free art book! -Damon Hastings
GAS CHAMBER
STAINED HAND 7” SPHC (2015)) SPHC has continued to step up their game, releasing some of the finest records in the various realms of punk and hardcore so far in 2015 (Terveet Kadet lp, nu-kle-ar blast suntan lp, The Coltranes 7”, and especially the Exacerbacion 7”). GAS CHAMBER’s newest 7”, STAINED HAND, is certainly no exception and destined to be on many year end lists, once again showing why they are one of the best active bands working not just in powerviolence but in hardcore, in general. Following up last year’s Hemorrhaging Light lp on Iron Lung Records, Stained Hand further develops the Buffalo quartet’s particular mix of powerviolence, noise, and ambient passages creating increasingly complex and dynamic songs that push forward a seemingly stagnant subgenre. The a-side “Always Coming Home” demonstrates this approach perfectly opening with a dreamy instrumental passage that grows into a powerviolence with a d-beat and blistering vocals. This is hardcore to get excited about. If you were lucky enough to catch Gas Chamber’s tour with the legendary Terveet Kadet, you may already own this record, but for the rest of us the next SPHC update cannot come soon enough. -Chris Defalco
DARK SUNNY LAND
S/T ONE HAND RECORDS (2015) STEVE PAINTER’s music is not a casual experience, and your sonic travels through his third DARK SUNNY LAND LP (his second on ONE HAND RECORDS) offer no reprieve. Primarily a vehicle for the Boston artist’s experimental, abstract guitar-based compositions, this self-titled work—four compositions over two sides in a beautiful, alien-gothic package—uses a variety of simple masking techniques (tremolo, delay, volume swells, etc.,) to turn an everyday instrument like a guitar into an exceptionally expressive sound-making tool capable of covering a much bigger canvas than usual. In a game of background and foreground interplay, Side A conjures a twilight walk into the jungle—with foreboding, overlapping hums, each presenting their own varying color and temperature. As you slip your boots into the murky stream, you wonder: were you poisoned or were you drugged? Seductive chirps and glassy hovering tones offer glimpses of ambiguous melody, although it seems that Painter is more concerned with scripting a wordless radio drama with a Foley-artist’s touch (the album credits note the use of “household objects”) than sticking a line in your head. Side B’s “Mind Out of Time” (note the Dylan play) finds the various layers of buzzing, humming, sub-octave bellowing, and faint trumpeting creating a canopy of dissonant, shifting chords. The shadow of drumbeats echoes in the distance as bones chatter and birds call. The final shift into the uplifting, gentle rays of “Kangaroo Daydream” suggests that there was really nothing to fear after all. You always had all the tools you needed. -Jonathan Donaldson

The Gas Presents Nick Ortolani FRI. 4/3 AT 7:30PM
Great Scott • 1222 Commonwealth Ave., Allston $5 • 18+ • greatscott.com
Nick is what we in the biz call a beast. He’s impossible to ignore on stage: his act is energetic, brainy, and goofy, with comic timing and writing on the goddamn point. Watch a pretty standard petty complant about a messy roommate transform into a geniusly absurd character monologue. He is also an occasional contributor to and frequent emotional supporter of The Tardy Eag so he is our friend. He will be supported by his budz Ian Von Steffen, Rich Karski, Jake McDowell, and Katie McCarthy. Do you like goofs? Cuz that’s a lineup of goofs.
PERSPECTIVES by KEIRA HOROWITZ and CRONOS (TIMELORD) You need advice? Ask Keira & Cronos: tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com or anonymously at tardyeagle.tumblr.com/ask
It feels like everyone in my life is moving on to being a real adult. I’m still eating cookies for dinner and searching for change under the couch to buy cigarettes. When is it time to grow up? Will I get left behind? KEIRA: Watch St. Elmo’s Fire. Who do you feel like? Is it Rob Lowe? Is it Emilio Estevez? (I am Mare Winningham. Who’s surprised? No one.) Real talk: the answers to your questions are 1-probably soon and 2-maybe. But in Boston, there’s always a new group of kids in September to feel older than/stay young with (if comparing yourself to other people is your thing). More real talk: lots of adults eat cookies for dinner and search for change under the couch. Don’t let them fool you. CRONOS (TIMELORD): According to definitions formulated in the layman’s psyche, it is not possible to be “left behind” by time. I am here to tell you that this is wrong. You can and will be left behind by Time dozens of times per minute. Time jumps forward and backward at its own discretion. The cookie you ate for dinner is the same cookie you ate in shame when your smaller body was lost at the entrance to the July 2, 1992 at the Walmart in Springfield, Ontario. The change under the couch passed through your hand exactly 95 years, 58 days, and 22 minutes ago when your body was Gerald. Try moving on to a new book or something.

Look, we’re not going to judge you if you don’t go—we’ll just feel really sad for you? Aside from the stellar lineup (Bill Nye, The Daily Show’s Jessica Williams, Wyatt Cenac, and more), past EMCFs have included baby goats, an eye contact booth, and a bouncy castle with a therapist inside. This year, Boston’s own Ken Reid will do a live taping of his podcast TV Guidance Counselor with Eugene. Yeah so it’s your life, we guess?
Women in comedy festival
WED. 4/22 through SUN. 4/26 womenincomedyfestival.com
Usually at any given type of comedy show, there are about 5000 men performing and 1 woman whose gender is always highlighted in some suuuuper boring way. The WICF started 7 years ago to swap those numbers around. At this year’s WICF, headliners include LILY TOMLIN(!!!) Jane Lynch, and Aparna Nancherla. The fest features over 100 other comics from Boston and the rest of the world showing off their standup, sketch, improv, and new this year, short films. Catch some workshops too!
What happens when we die? KEIRA: Probably nothing. But I like to think that it would feel like being on a really good vacation. The kind where I wouldn’t think about email or worry if I have enough money to order dessert. I would wear a maxi dress with a straw hat. And I wouldn’t look like an idiot tourist. Maybe I have a moped. I think I just made heaven sound like someone’s Pinterest account, but it feels good so I’m going with it. CRONOS (TIMELORD): I’m actually going to tell you the real truth because I think you deserve to know. The passage from life to death is more gradual than most people think. The first phase deals with sleep travel and thought displacement experimentation. You begin to leave your body as you sleep, at first traveling to temporal then non-temporal locations. When you wake up, you don’t remember, but you start to feel the connection between your physical and astral bodies unbinding. You may or may not have a guide with no face. The moment you die, the face fills in and becomes your face but not your face. This face now instructs you in the second phase of death, self transmutation and multiple reality experimentation. During this phase you may become other creatures, sometimes simultaneously in different physical areas of the world. Depending on your level, you may be restricted to only this planet, although you may request additional access points. The third phase of death, which is the current limit of our knowledge, deals with advanced molecular infusion travel. During this phase you may choose to experience air, water, flame, soil, or inanimate matter (as we often see the later suffused with stored energies). There are many more complexities and additional capabilities associated with each of these three phases, but in the interest of space, I will keep this answer basic and to the point.
A Letter to My Parents by GREGOR SPAMSA
Dear Mom and Dad, As you have probably figured out by now, I have been kidnapped. I understand it might take a while to pay the ransom due to family financial circumstances. I totally forgive you. In the meantime, please send the following items via post: MY CROSSWORD PUZZLE BOOK: You can find it under my pillow. This is just something to occupy my mind. It has a list of all of my crushes since the 5th grade in the back, and I’d like to keep track of them while I’m here. No peeking! MY PILLOW: I have a bruise on my cheek from sleeping on a brick for several days and need something softer. You know where to find this. Just in case you forgot, it’s in the closet, on the topmost shelf, hidden under a pile of winter coats, inside a slim briefcase, right on top of the crossword puzzle book. It’s the closet in the basement. LIGHT-BLUE CARDIGAN: I don’t remember where I left this but it’s my favorite out of all the other blue cardigans I own. This one is missing the third button and has a stain in the inner left sleeve in the area slightly above where the elbow should be. On second thought, I probably left it at school. Check there first.

FILM SERIES ARTICLE (TOP): FEATURED FILM SERIES MUPPET MADNESS 4/17 - 4/20, @BRATTLE WWW.BRATTLEFILM.ORG Stretching back into the 1970’s, the legacy and influence of the Muppets and Jim Henson cannot be overstated. From delivering groundbreaking, 4th-wall-smashing, and absurdist humor to breathing life—not to mention heart and soul—into a bunch of fabric contraptions, the Jim Henson Company was on the forefront of both comedy and special effects for years. Though the Company and the Muppets soldiered on following the tragic death of founder Jim Henson, the projects that had his personal touch possessed a certain aura about them that nothing afterward could emulate. Thankfully, Muppet fans old and
new have the Brattle. Once again, the theatre plays host to its annual Muppet Madness series over Patriots’ Day weekend. Screening classic Muppet films along with decidedly different, non-Muppet works like The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, the series kicks off with a special, sing-along screening of The Muppet Movie. - Alex Schab

RISE OF ECHSENFRIEDL (1992) dir. Johannes Grenzfurthner @BU
An American independent filmmaking legend is getting his due here in Boston as 3 of Charles B. Pierce's numerous low budget oddities get the Coolidge midnite movie treatment in April. Pierce made independent exploitation films as well as outcast anti-hero fare throughout the 70s and beyond. He also worked as set decorator for other indies like Coffy and Black Belt Jones. The legacy of Pierce is that of what once was the American filmmaking dream: driven director, a bunch of gathered friends as cast and crew, a quality low budget film is made, and AIP picks it and gets it into every drive-in from Weirs Beach to Mel's in Los Angeles. Pierce's directorial debut, The Legend of Boggy Creek (1972), made 25 million dollars!! And that's early 70s dollars! Sadly that terrific film is not screening as part of this series. With that success in his back pocket though, Pierce went on to make a slew of other films aimed at that big outdoor screen. The best among these has to be The Town That Dreaded Sundown (1976), an early slasher film based upon the real life, never apprehended Phantom Killer of Texarkana, TX who more or less set into motion the "lover's lane murder scenario". Weird movie. Seldom screened for sure.

Boston’s premier gay film festival has come a long way since it was launched back in 1984 at the old Nickelodeon theatre by George Mansour, an area film programmer whose interests ranged from art-cinema to porn. Finding appropriate content required broad-minded catholicity then -- films might feature gay actors, say, or queer subtexts, or some variety of vaguely defined “gay appeal.” Today’s festival has expanded as dramatically as the community it celebrates has flourished, and programmers face an embarrassment of riches. So, happily, do you. Over eleven days, the MFA,

Out of the Blue Too Art Gallery & More 541 Massachusetts Avenue Cambridge MA, 02139 It’s time to get out and hang. Even the sun is hanging out these days. Get out and hang with the sun, on your way down Mass Ave to Central Square, at Out Of The Blue Too. Since launching their new location in the fall of 2014 the OOTBT crew has been jumping through an unbelievable amount of hoops to establish a legitimate venue for art events of all kinds. So far, they are doing great things to keep us busy, with a wide breadth of daily and nightly activities for our music, art and film communities. You can see rad art; procure various hand-made artifacts from the crucial to the peripheral; participate in open mics, board games, and other regular gatherings; go to a dope show at the hands of grassroots promoters and organizers, featuring artists and musicians who represent the real, hard-working and forward-thinking scene. You can take in a film screening and rub elbows with relevant, local, national and international freaks. You see because OOTBT is doing what any good community space should: providing an accessible place for artists and appreciators to run a darn muck (a safe, welcoming muck) with their various cross-medium projects and push their creative boundaries further than conventional venues allow! What a mouthful. To sum it all up, especially if any of this is causing your eyebrow to raise, just allow me to answer any and all question you might have with one answer: Yes, you could hang here.
