What We’re All About: BRAIN Arts Org Official Mandate This project has been going, in one form of another, for over 10 years. It all began simply enough, just throwing shows for lack of stuff to do around here. I personally was inspired by a few individuals putting together interesting shows and thought hey, there could be more. The mission started there, to unite as many interesting individuals and collectives as possible, from Greater Boston, New England and beyond, to vitalize the cultural movement. It quickly became an obsession. We started our own newspaper. We expanded our website. We started doing 5, 10, 15 shows a month. We expanded further, to cover art and film. We became a nonprofit. Our goal is to have our own space, a community center, a permanent haven for all of these wonderful activities going on around us. But what else can we do? How about reaching a little further towards a better world. To that end, we give you our official org mandate: BRAIN Arts Organization currently carries out three main programs: the Boston Compass newspaper, the Boston Hassle website, and Boston

Hassle shows. BRAIN ARTS is a local, volunteerrun, music and arts nonprofit organization that aims to foster an independent music, art, and film community in the greater Boston area through meetings, events and publications. Our commitment to an inclusive grassroots community means that we must actively work to amplify the voices of and make our spaces comfortable and accessible for marginalized individuals in dominant culture including but not limited to women, people of color, LGBTQIA+, disabled folks, etc. We actively oppose all forms of discrimination and oppression and continuously work to keep our spaces free of them by holding those in our spaces accountable for their behavior. Recognizing the constant change in social politics and culture it is our goal to continuously educate ourselves, our audience, and the artists we work with to help create and maintain these safer spaces. If you want to be part of the movement please reach out, we would love to meet you. Either way, have fun, be good to each other and thanks for picking up the rag.

This is their annual festival and, just like we do with Hasslefest, they pack in the sickest artists/musicians that they can muster, local luminaries and recent developments alike. BLACK MARKET

Back to school? Nah, back to black. (Market). Yes, the bimonthly Black Market is back! Come to the Cambridge Community Center (5 Callender St., off Western) to support local vendors and pick up the very best in Boston vintage, records, art, zines, crafts and so much more. The Black Market is a great way to involve yourself in the community, get to know folks and add to your sick record collection (you’ll remember to get a player, someday, maybe). So what are you waiting for? Set aside some time on 9/20 to find some treasures. -Emma Diamond

THE DREAM MACHINES OF THEO JANSEN For years, Theo Jansen’s Strandbeests have roamed the Dutch seaside, making us dream of our ancient origins and the strange, miraculous creatures that inhabit this world with us and within us. Part sculpture and part performance, found at the intersection of art and science, the Strandbeests are self-propelled creatures that wander beaches and fields and, as of August 28th, Boston City Hall. The Strandbeests will be finding their first major American home @Peabody Essex Museum from 9/19 – 1/3 for an exhibition featuring the sculptures, movement demonstrations, sketches and a hall of Strandbeest “fossils”. -Emma Diamond

The Channels - Disposable Camera Bass-forward 3-piece The Channels wah-wah their way into our hearts with the newly-minted, prepared-guitar masterpiece Disposable Camera. Don your best headphones and let this smooth noise funk thump right through your braincase like a rampaging alien mastadon. Yo! Why is my nose bleeding? That’d be Mr Fede’s ill mixology, almost like being at a show...oh yeah...they should be back from tour by now so you can pick up a physical at one of their live performances. Recommended for fans of Arab on Radar, shoegaze, noise-rock, genre, genre, blah. -James Moore

It’s September. For those of you who are either long since out of school, never went or just couldn’t stand going home for break, it’s time to say goodbye to the serenity of Boston’s Summer, as we welcome back old friends and say hello to new ones. This one’s for you newbies. We hope that you take in all the area has to offer, from the parks that Frederick Law Olmsted planned 150 years ago, to our beloved movie theaters like the Coolidge and Brattle. You may travel in packs around Allston with people you don’t really know, searching for a place to call your own in this new, unfamiliar territory. Don’t worry though, it’s a rite of passage. You’ll want to party, of course and we encourage that. But if you’re an undergrad, or just arriving onto the scene, we at the Compass want to instill a few words of advice:

1: explore greater boston!

This is not your hometown, no. But it could be. Explore the greatness of Greater Boston and learn about all it has to offer. Even if you don’t stick around, explore and find your niche.

2: be respectful of each other!

It’s one thing to meet someone at a party, hit it off, and enjoy each other’s company. It’s another thing to start your night with the wrong expectations of people around you. Please, make sure you understand the meaning of consent. Yes means yes. No means no. Nobody deserves to feel uncomfortable. Be vigilant. Be aware of your surroundings. If you see someone doing something uncool, intervene. Keep each other safe. Know your limits. Boston, Cambridge, Brookline and Somerville. While they’re not exactly playgrounds, they offer a lot. The home to bands such as Pixies, Joan Baez, The Freeze, Gang Green, Donna Summer, Converge, The Proletariat, Mission of Burma, Toxic Narcotic, New Edition, The Showcase Showdown, Dinosaur Jr and Sebadoh [W. Mass], and more recently local favorites such as Fat History Month, Pile, and Krill.

Not just a documentary my friends, it’s a whole freakin’ movement now! Just a few days ago Hampton Beach (NH) got their own quiet weekend of equal-opportunity torso freedom (we hope it was quiet) and we think that’s nice...like in Nice, on the Mediterranean Sea. French folks don’t freak out when they see a booby. What are we, 12? Come on America...the Puritans are all long dead! We have a chance to lead the way here, and all we have to do is be chill. -James Moore

Last thing: Go check out the Bill Russell statue by City Hall. It’s incredible.

-Ethan Long

5-9pm • CORITA KENT AND THE LANGUAGE OF POP @Harvard Art Museums (Cambridge)

You’ve seen at least one Corita Kent painting. Her “Rainbow Swash” is on the gas tank visible from I-93 or Savin Beach in Dorchester. Pay more attention next time. It's a painting in protest of the Vietnam War, and the blue stripe contains a profile of Hi Chi Minh. Kent juxtaposed the increasingly sterile and uniform world around her with color and irregularity. She distorts familiar signs and symbols, and overlays them with bright color and handwriting. Her pop art is skeptical of modernity, showing the deep divide between mechanization and the human touch. The irregular script on one painting literally quotes Thoreau. At the Harvard Art Museum, you can give Sister Mary Corita a closer look. Her work is hung alongside that of her more famous contemporaries, putting her firmly in the pop art conversation of the late 1960s. -JG // On View 9/3/155/8/16

Just because we have Ttotals bringing their mellow vibes from Nashville, and White Kyle bringing his lo-fi sing songs from Austin. Soft Eyes, from nearby NH, bring some garage psych to the mix, and Andy California brings something new freaky rockabilly to the table. There are artists coming from south of here, and artists from here playing music inspired by the south. South, south, south. It’s “southern style”. Dear Aaron,

by GILMORE TAMMY

A Letter from

the War

on Christmas

Sorry it's been so long since the last letter. Things have been kind of rough out here, Little Brother, and I wasn't sure if I could share this burden but I’m realizing that if I don't, it'll eat me alive. These folks I’m with, I’d die for them—don't get me wrong—but the things I’ve seen sometimes make me question our mission all together. We're none of us evil people a lot us don't even believe in evil but some days seems like it gets in anyway. The other day we got a SOS from some Friendly's at the East Side Mall. Things sounded tight, so I grabbed Scrubby and Old Doc and headed out in the unit Volvo (if you look at the photo I sent last time: Scrubby's the third guy on the left wearing the Richard Dawkins shirt that says "Where's Your God Now?" and Old Doc's just to his right in yoga pants with the "Coexist" neck tattoo). Well, the three of us rolled up in there and what I saw will stay with me 'til I die. I'm used to confrontations with adults, store managers, radio hosts and that sort. I've even had to forcefully take down "Merry Christmas" banners and replace them with "Happy Holidays" but this— this was something else. I mean sweet Gaia, Aaron, they'd raided Santa's Village and they were attacking everyone. Not just the usual chads but everyone. I saw a grown man tell a baby that Santa isn't real. A baby! A baby that probably can't even speak English! I thought we were on the side of reason! They forced an entire first grade class to watch as they stripped Santa of his beard and belly. I saw 6 elves get beaten with a plastic snowman while parents screamed in terror, trying to pull their youngsters out of the fray. We got there just after mall security and now it was our job to get the boys out. Have you ever seen angry mall Rent-A-Cops? It's not pretty.

by ADAM HAUT

My memory of the rest if pretty fragmented but we got out alive, which is to say: still breathing, but it's taken its toll. Scrubby hasn't spoken but a few words since. The other night, I walked into our tent and saw him holding his copy of The God Delusion and just turning it over and over in his hands, like he didn't know what to do with it. And Old Doc—well, Old Doc's got the sickness like I never seen. He's been wearing the Santa beard and hat since the attack and he just keeps smiling and being jolly. He's even got a twinkle in his eye that's ten times scarier than the screaming we hear from the med tent at night. When I signed up, I thought we were doing something good. I thought we were going to liberate these people from O'Reilly and Limbaugh—we were going to be the voice of reason—but now, now I’m just not sure. Don't tell mom and dad about this; it'll only worry them. Happy Holidays! Your big brother Steve

Adam Haut was a staple of Boston—a guy you were always happy to see, so unfailingly kind, warm, fun, and hilarious. He was a hell of a performer. He played fiddle in Civil Warblers and Bread and Roses and we did sketch comedy together for a long while in Anderson Comedy. Anderson forged a siblinghood through making a lot of people laugh, having the most soulcrushing bombing opening for a national headliner, the loopy, long nights and weekends filming and writing sketches, and goofing off during meetings in Adam's living room. This is one of my favorite things he wrote and performed. I don't care that it's not Christmas. Death is stupid. Hug your friends. RIP buddy. - Katie

Speaking of youths in hazardous undertakings, what if we tried substituting snackery production for war? There are some nice parallels: heavy technological demands, questionable use of resources, corporate overlord involvement, environmental havoc, causalities, etc.. Well, if this were to come to pass, be assured JACKED™ 3D Jalapeño Pepper Jack Flavored Torilla Snacks would be a fine weapon in our arsenal.

We are v interested in taking a look at & possibly printing your 400 wordsish brain blobs, your black & white drawings, your dumb Photoshops, games, puzzles, you know, printable stuff. Deadline for October issue = 9/21 but we do take things on a rolling basis.

it occurred to me perhaps it’s not even possible for them to go stale, an achieve-

But I fear I’ve buried the headline. You can—mind-blower alert!—take a photo of your chip, upload it, have the website ‘read’ your particular chip configurations and have the pleasure of viewing some wee eXtreme surfing/sharknado/etc. video plays. My JACKED torilla guinea pigs friends all agreed it was bogus, bogus, bogus and vids must be randomly generated. It’s easy to imagine cluster of stoned youths in basements spending an afternoon testing this out. God bless them if so.

I’m not sure I’m quite familiar enough with spicy pepper jack cheese—I’m an extra sharp cheddar gal to the last!—to assert how closely the cheese powder resembles the original. I almost feel confident, however, in saying there is an evocation. I LOVED the dimensions: ubersalty corn paste reconstituted into a triangular shape about 1/8” tall (viewing from side) and, configured and therein an eerie, maze-like pattern. If it helps in the envisioning, the design is such it wouldn’t be surprising to see someone wearing it as an amulet on Dr. Who. The result is so SUPER crunchy, both vertically and horizontally—hence the 3D?

ment that rivals human on moon. They are, I fear, most likely a disappointment to anyone who likes spicy anything. And what, pray tell, is a torilla vs. a tortilla, you ask? Ah. Well, chickens, there isn’t a Santy Claus, and I think that is made-up distinction.

Submit to The Tardy Eagle it will be fun I promise

Are we living through a golden age or an arms race of snack production? Never before has snacks been so wildly imagined and (fetishishically?) realized for such large swathes of the population. I can say this with all the confidence of someone who has done absolutely no research whatsoever to back their assertion up. Still, I suspect I’m right. All hail lowto-med brow (depending on your brow) mass-producible molecular gastronomy! Including: DORITOS® JACKED™ 3D Jalapeño Pepper Jack Flavored Torilla Snacks.

Thank you, Michael!

UCLA FILM & TELEVISION ARCHIVE’S FESTIVAL OF PRESERVATION (9/10-9/20) @MFA MFA.org/Programs/Series/UCLA-Festival-Preservation No matter where you land on the issue of loan forgiveness, please know that we’re all indebted to the restoration efforts of the UCLA Film & Television Archive. If ever you’ve loved a film fortunate enough to have been rescued before being absorbed by the black hole of moving image oblivion (where nearly fifty-percent of films made before 1950 reside, or whatever it is things do inside black holes), here’s your chance to revel in the reel rectifyin’ thanks to the MFA’s ten-day program this September. Thirteen films stud the eclectic roster, from such genre-specific specimens as pre-code romcom My Best Girl, sf thrill-donor White Zombie, and combat chestnut Men In War to more genrenebulous fare, such as Spring Night, Summer Night, the first and only feature by Boston-based J.L. Anderson, about two young ones united in love and alienation, and their escape from the rural small-town humdrum. - Rebecca DeLucia

THE SLEEPERS… FILMS OF MARK LAPORE 9/2 @MASSART The specter of Mark LaPore (1952-2005) still hangs over Boston and the broader film community now ten years after his untimely death in September of 2005. As a professor of film at the Massachusetts College of Art, he was hugely influential, widely respected and adored by both his students and his peers. His often challenging work, which has been called “experimental ethnographic film,” both acknowledged and called into question many issues and concerns over imperialism and ethics in ethnographic film practice. And yet, while eulogized in works by Saul Levine and Phil Solomon, Mark’s own films have been rarely screened since the news that he had taken his own life sent shock-waves through the community, thus creating a shroud of mystery for those who hadn’t known him or his work beforehand. Saul Levine will be presenting five films by his late friend and colleague on 9/2, followed by two more during a program on 9/9. -Stefan Grabowski

THE LAST DRAGON (1985) dir. Michael Schultz 9/19 @COOLIDGE Bruce Leroy is a young black martial artist and THE LAST DRAGON chronicles his New York City journey in becoming a martial arts master. It’s 80s cheese in its own way, but dated or not it’s a very successful inversion of the kung fu genre, closer to the eccentric slightly supernatural successes of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA than the fading mainstream moves of something like KARATE KID. As purely American KungFu goes, THE LAST DRAGON is a friendly PG pillar of the genre. Leroy is a classic outsider, trying to make his way, in his own way. It’s a hard road that many of us can probably relate to traveling. Luckily for Leroy he’s got a leg up on most: he’s got THE GLOW. He can manifest his inner energy, VISUALLY, and forcefully. Bruce Leroy is the man, the Bruce Lee worshipping man. But can he harness his power? Sho’nuff (“The Shogun of Harlem”), another martial artist also vying to become a martial arts master is Bruce’s nemesis. Great bad guy. Great look (that Busta Rhymes later borrowed). There’s another bad guy in this film too. But who cares. It’s all about Leroy vs. Sho’nuff. Movie theater showdowns. Glowing hand offs. All of it produced by Motown’s Berry Gordy, who was quite involved in the production. A little on the family entertainment end of the movie spectrum, THE LAST DRAGON is nevertheless a classic of its kind and unusually, a legit psychotronic picture that can be enjoyed by most, if not all. - Dan Shea

13 WHO AM I – NO SYSTEM IS SAFE (2014)

dir. Baran bo Odar @COOLIDGE If hacking is magic, then montage is a mystical discipline in this breathlessly propulsive action diatribe out of Germany, a loose, not unloopy hagiography/horror-show about Fawkes-faced anonymites raging (and preening) deep within the infernal machine. In partnership with the Goethe-Institut Boston

14 SCHOOL OF ROCK (2003)

dir. Richard Linklater @COOLIDGE Class is in session. You probably dreaded those words in your youth, but when Jack Black is your teacher they don’t sound so bad. The Tenacious D frontman stars as an affable loser who guides grade kids to musical greatness.

(1995) 17CLUELESS dir. Amy Heckerling @COOLIDGE

Like, I know it’s based off a Jane Austen book or whatever, but this flick is totally for sure way good and so not a first-period snoozefest, you know? It’s actually like way funny, plus Paul Rudd is a TOTAL Baldwin.

Paul Schrader @HFA 7 dir. Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, and Yaphet Kotto 17 WHITE ZOMBIE (1932) are three disenfranchised workers at wit’s end (and beginning) in this Rust Belt factoryfloor caper, a timely populist critique of union practices and the strife endemic to the American underclass in capitalism’s malfruition.

dir. Victor Halperin @MFA The always menacing Bela Lugosi plays a plantation manager who may or may not be an obviously evil zombie-master witch doctor. Thought lost for decades, this poverty row shocker was an inspiration on everyone from George Romero to Rob Zombie! Also screens 9/20

26 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY (1968)

18 MEN IN WAR (1957)

dir. Stanley Kubrick @SOMERVILLE From club wielding monkeys to futuristic space stations to... well, wherever it is that the film ends up, Kubrick’s work is striking on every level. What follows is a journey beset with conflict – from both within and without. Also screens 9/19 THE SADDEST MUSIC IN THE WORLD (2003)

dir. Terry Zwigoff @COOLIDGE Master cartoonist and eccentric weirdo Robert Crumb is the subject of this documentary centering on his past, his thoughts and his craft. Regularly hailed as one of the best documentaries of the 90s, if not of all time.

Guy Maddin @HFA 25dir. Sate your craving for whimsical delirium twice

(1985) 25 COMMANDO dir. Mark L. Lester @COOLIDGE

A foolish band of mercenaries break one of the most important laws of the universe: never kidnap a Delta Force commando’s daughter — especially if that commando happens to be Arnold Schwarzenegger. A classic 80’s action movie in every sense! Also screens 9/26

(2005) 26 SERENITY dir. Joss Whedon @COOLIDGE

HEIST NIGHT 9/5-9/6 @HFA HCL.Harvard.Edu/HFA/ Like the chick flick, the sports movie, and the slasher film, many heist pictures succeed by virtue of their inherently satisfying formula: a team of likably raffish cads hatch a devilishly intricate plan to steal something imminently desirable from a stuffy establishment, and either cathartically succeed or ironically fail. The magic, however, is in the sheer malleability of this setup. To this end, the Harvard Film Archive presents an all-night marathon of capers from around the globe, by visionaries ranging from Sidney Lumet (THE ANDERSON TAPES) to John Woo (ONCE A THIEF) to Jules Dassin (TOPKAPI). I went in for a free circuit hacking night (every Wednesday at 7pm), worked on some arduino projects, then wound up getting a lesson from the 3 competitive lock pickers who happened to be hanging out there. It was way easier then I thought it would be. It’s actually amazing everyone doesn’t just go around picking each others locks all the time. Anywho, a place so massive and replete with creators can be kind of intimidating and hard to know where to begin.

But worry not, you can get yourself oriented and inspired by setting up a free tour of the place, or by dropping in for one of their free workshops. Don your safety goggles and get fabricating.
