August Riffage Deep in the summer slog we are. Starting and growing a nonprofit org from nothing is a slog in and of itself but then summer hits, the lights go up, the roaches scatter and us lifers are left out, spread thin and getting crispy. August especially leaves me feeling sloggish, and sluggish, I suppose. There are also just less people around to maintain the enthusiasm so the burden of cultural activism is lopsided for three solid months. The students of Boston by and large all go away for the summer and normal people (even show goers) take small vacations to cooler places. Despite the heat exhaustion and the temporarily dwindled crew good stuff is still happening this summer and I would like to tell you about it in no particular order. For one thing BRAIN Arts has identified a new and extremely important ongoing effort: making our community and the spaces we occupy safer for ALL people, especially those marginalized by mainstream society. Until we decide on an official name we’re calling it the Safer Space Initiative and we encourage you to join the conversation. As one of my fellow volunteers put it at our last meeting, if you don’t know what this means or why it’s important then you
especially should get involved and find out. Under The Underground continues its monthly film series highlighting the works of lesser-known filmmakers on 8/21 at Lilypad. Our grants team has applied for our second grant and we are looking to expand the effort. If you have grants/nonprofit experience please reach out! The Compass production crew has restructured to get more people involved in the process and we are currently seeking graphic designers with InDesign Skills, copy editors and any reliable people who want to make this project their own. Similarly the Hassle website team is continuing to grow and seeking more help covering ALL kinds of rad things happening in, around or affecting Boston. Even our show booking concern has restructured and stepped up the effort to cultivate more All Ages spaces for shows. Good stuff. We have a newsletter about all these fine happenings but i figured I’d just throw it all out there for you here, in brief. It’s too hot for anything but underwear right now anyway am I right? Thanks for picking up the rag and see you out there!
IT’S OUT! COMPASS RELEASE SHOW Calling all artists, musicians, and filmmakers! Starting in September, the Compass will be throwing a monthly show to celebrate the release of the paper. Come Be Our Friend at Ou
Fundraiser! 8/6 We are your friends, you’ll never be alone again! Or at least from 4PM-8PM @ Friendly Toast in Cambridge on Thursday 8/6. The good folks at BRAIN Arts who produce this very paper and run BostonHassle. com and book Boston Hassle shows want to invite you to our Friendly Fundraiser where 20% of the night’s sales will go directly towards bringing you more music, art, film, culture, and ink stains on your hands! We’re trying to raise enough money to print an issue of the Compass, so if you’re hungry enough to help us reach our goal come on out to Kendall Square! But after 8PM you’re on your own again. -Harrison Bralower
Gettin’ Down at the School of Groove
Listen, I totally understand that you just *needed* to buy that $5 Spiderman land phone because one day you’re “definitely going to get a landline!” A banana slicer that is “literally shaped like a banana” is honestly an invaluable kitchen utensil. You’re “definitely going to get into pottery this summer!”, so really, that kiln is going to pay for itself. An alarm clock that not only tries to wake you up with a sound, but also shakes the bed to let you know that morning has arrived!? I get it, but do you ever feel like one of the hardest parts of being a grownup is coming to terms with the fact that you have too much stuff and not enough space? You’re in luck! On 8/15, come to the “Cool, Air-Conditioned, Monster Yard Sale” @ Manning Apartments in Central Square! Not only can all that cool stuff you got go to someone who can put it to even better use, but bonus: a portion of the proceeds benefit the Alliance of Cambridge Tenants, because everyone deserves to live comfortably. -Sophie Samul

Maybe you always wanted to take music lessons as a young’un but never had the chance. Maybe you tried out the french horn but didn’t really dig it and your middle school band teacher terrified you. Regardless of what sidetracked your musical dreams, you should seriously consider taking classes at the School of Groove. They offer affordable private lessons on guitar, bass, vox, drums and more. Throw in free use of a practice space and the opportunity to join a band with other students and receive group instruction, and you’ve got an exceedingly cool learning opportunity. If you go to shows and ever wondered what it’d be like to be the cool cucumber up on stage, here’s your chance to find out. Don’t bystand, start participating! -Peter Steele
WaterFire is literally & figuratively hot & cool
Ever wondered how dozens of bonfires lit in the rivers of downtown Providence would look? Ponder no more! You’ve got three opportunities to see your greatest fantasies played out before your eyes on 8/1, 8/15, and 8/29, courtesy of Barnaby Evans’ sculpture WaterFire. Lighting is shortly after sunset, but it’s worth getting down an hour or two early to bask in the other art installations and the eclectic music program. And if you haven’t been down to the Ocean State recently, it’s just a super chill commuter rail ride away. $5 suggested donation, waterfire.org for more information. - Marisa Bulkeley
Dan Goldin and Dave Spak used to walk down Greylock; the sound of music got clearer and louder as you got closer. Venturing at night into the damp, dark, dank-smelling basements of Allston, watching locals play, or meeting acts rolling through the region. It was an enlightening experience that filled them with the desire to start a label; to give more people a chance to listen to the acts that they were seeing. Today, Exploding in Sound Records is one of the most exciting small labels in the country. Mr. Goldin has now booked three shows on August 22 and 23 in Boston as part of the label’s east coast “Thank You For Being A Friend” event. 8/22 @ The Sinclair: Krill, Big Ups, “Unholy Strength,” Stove, Palehound. 8/23 @ O’Briens Early: Vundabar, Washer, Zula, Swings, Great Deceivers, Lady Bones. 8/23 @ Great Scott: Pile, Kal Marks, Gnarwhal, Leapling and Bunny’s A Swine. I messaged a bunch of Exploding in Sound family members, asking them to describe the label in 10 words or less. Carl Shane of Kal Marks wrote: Kind, Dan, Dave, Exploding, Sound, Fun, Support, Party & On. Rick Maguire of Pile says that “Being on EIS is like having four elbows: advantageous.” Jesse Weiss of Palehound, among other bands, wrote: Home-brewed, Ground up, Heartfelt, Supportive yet Eclectic Burst of Audio. Finally, Dan Goldin, the legend: “Bringing good music to the people... or at least trying.” From Boston to the world, Exploding-In-Sound showcases inventive artists in a world saturated with the same old. I encourage everyone reading to get together with your friends and start something. Make a label. Help your friends release their music. You can do it, just set a goal and achieve.

BODEGA Bodega is known as Boston’s iconic sneaker and streetwear shop, but less known is their commitment to the community as a gallery and global platform for local artists. This sense of responsibility to the community is exactly what keeps Bodega so fresh; they are genuinely rooted in street art, instead of just capitalizing on it through fashion. By selling artist-designed apparel and featuring local artists’ installations on their walls they go beyond exhibiting local art; they are fostering its growth.

“You have to build your own, you really have to find your own way because there’s no set industry here. There’s pockets of it but you have to hustle and find your way. That’s the strength. Within the lack is an opportunity, just figure out a way. Keeping a gallery or pop up art space mobile is a good option. […] The best art spaces I’ve seen are in people’s houses, you can put together a show and promote it with hardly any resources. It’s definitely feasible to start small and build up to something where you have overhead costs, like rent. As long as you build that network and keep stacking the chips.”

Understand, I do not say this carelessly: DOWNTOWN BOYS are unequivocally the most exciting punk act to have surfaced on the east coast of the United States this decade. This band is fun. This band is terrifying. This band is sincere. This band is edifying. Above all though, Downtown Boys are attractively political in their nature. Their second album Full Communism is a step up from their eponymous debut released a few years back, primarily in that it offers a more forceful type of polemic against systemic issues that have only started to be actively redressed. Frontwoman Victoria Ruiz fervently implores her listeners to recognize the pervasiveness of American oppression (especially for women, POC, members of the LGBT community) and the accompanying degree of ignorance it bred.

T he Flenser (2015)
This is one really strange, in ways that I haven’t heard before, record. The two brothers that comprise the out-there black metal duo of MAMALEEK (San Francisco) have taken a leap of faith right into what, might, even be a modern rock (of some kind) masterpiece. VIADOLOROSA is filled with gorgeous jazz guitar playing, vocals that trade off between witchy blackened screeches and a pitched down speak-sing monotone, left turns into experimental electronic music (even hip hop beats) and industrial, ritualistic thud/ introspection. If someone was explaining this record to me, as I am to you, I would probably start looking away, confused, immediately running from the music being described (in my mind anyway). BUT! MAMALEEK is the exception in every way, successfully blending everything from ambient hip-hop, to experimental jazz guitar, to the organic industrial nature of the likes of FATHER MURPHY, with black metal. The latter genre only represented here by the earlier mentioned blackened vocals. The many feels successfully offered through the 9 songs of VIADOLOROSA give it that “next level” kind of album glow. “Nothing But Loss” feels like a blackened Eno rock song that then morphs into Young Marble Giants territory, only with pitched down, downer male vocals. “Pain As Providence” comes with a blackened Beefheart delivery. Belligerence, over a drunken jazz duo, the rumbling tones of a faint synthesizer hovering nearby, acting as if they don’t exist. Catch the groove on “What’s Left.” And the extended drone passage in “Xpiotos Latmiya”! Bashing beat, guitar meandering of a beauty rough, the sound of a night chase along the Seine… ending in madness obviously. Can San Francisco share some of their amazing eccentric, and exploratory metal bands with the rest of the country?? THE FLENSER is hording them! Another amazing release by that most innovative heavy music label (located, where else, in San Francisco). Will be a favorite of mine for a long while. -Dan Shea

The Female Form

P osh Isolation (2015)
Loke Rahbek (known for his work with Lust for Youth, Vår, Croatian Amor, and Damien Dubrovnik, among others) and Frederikke Hoffmeier, aka Puce Mary, an impressive figure in her own right who has built a reputation in the power electronics scene with three fulllengths, collaborative releases with Sewer Election, and a number of international tours, have reunited for their second collaborative album, The Female Form. It was released in April via Posh Isolation, the Copenhagen shop and label (which Rahbek co-runs with Christian Stadsgaard) best known as the flag-bearer for the Danish scene which brought us groups like Iceage and Lower. The Female Form is the second part of a planned trilogy, picking up where they left off with 2011’s The Closed Room. It was recorded in the duo’s shared studio space at the Mayhem complex in Copenhagen, as well as the historic EMS facilities in Stockholm. The record shows marked improvement since their last collaboration, but still has the sense of picking up essentially where that record left off in terms of concepts and aesthetic. Both records deal with with the deeply personal and provocative subjects of intimacy and the sometimes thorny relations between the sexes. They both also mine drone, industrial, and electro-acoustic influences to weave their demanding, unsettling tableau of intimate yet disembodied vocals and abrasive electronic noise. While far too corrosive sounding to inspire much in the way of a romantic feeling, this collaboration’s meditations on the nature of human interactions (especially interactions between men and women) are intriguing, emotionally resonant, and more than a little harrowing. Give it a spin. Just maybe not while you’re trying to seal the deal with that hottie you brought home.

Holiday Music sounds like the sign hanging over the CD aisle in a Hallmark store. In fact, it’s the name of a band that has nothing to do with seasonal cheer. Their new album Brainwaves Are Real? is a compilation of weird, slightly warped futuristic jangle pop that also manages to be—how do they do this?—a crowd pleaser. I’d recommend it to anyone with the faintest appreciation for pop music. Maybe I’ll hand it out as Christmas presents and hope people don’t think I’m messing with them.
Holiday Music are Boston-based, and Brainwaves Are Real? was released by the Allston-based record label and zine publisher Disposable America. Many songs on Brainwaves are catchy and often moving. But they’re also weird enough to be worth a grin and a head scratch. Consider the song “NO” (an all-caps title that presumably suggests something more profound than a keyboard glitch). “NO” is a soft, melancholy song that mixes gentle thumbed notes with bright popping high notes. But first there’s about ten seconds of curious water sounds (a rolling river? A draining bathtub?). “18514 Page Ave” features fractured, practically inaudible vocal sweeps that sound like what your parents must have heard when they played records backwards listening for messages from Satan. The final track, “Our Gimmick,” is my favorite. It makes me think of a musically gifted cult losing themselves in a melodious chant before being abducted by aliens.
Holiday Music reminds me of no one, but I can imagine them being liked by everyone. They are strange but not alienating, catchy but not banal. I’d love to see them live. Dance a little. Sway a little. Weird out. -Emma Buchanan

(2015)
Bi-coastal punk duo Ursula is ready to rage. Putting out demos on their Bandcamp in the summer of 2014 ultimately culminated in their single “Cavegrrl,” a riotous middle finger to the patriarchy. Recorded with that peculiar lo-fi quality heard only in the most local of basements, Ursula’s music is frantic, ugly, and tailor-made for girls who just want to have fun. The girlish giggling on experimental demo tracks are mere appendages to the wild she-beast that is slowly building inside. They’re getting ready for something, even if listeners aren’t quite sure what that is.
The album is for sale at Don Giovanni Records.

The songs are categorically "punk", but beyond this they incorporate elements of 1970s No Wave, dance-music and protest folk song. Downtown Boys are a true motley of social-political activists, with a resolute impetus for change. The opening track, "Wave of History" best demonstrates their enterprise: "I can't hear maybes...on the wave of history you can't look back”. The most electrifying song though is "Monstro" - its blend of optimism regarding racial identity in America and lurid xenophobic imagery has become a hallmark for bands like Downtown Boys. Moreover, live performances of the song are unmatched in rousing a unique air of compassionate frustration amongst show-goers. These moments expose the band for what they really are. Revolutionary.

It’s no matter, because they plan to rip you to shreds anyway. “Motherfucker, motherfucker, motherfucker,” they chant as the drums build momentum in “Cavegrrl.” This is premature revolution music, just before punches are thrown in a mosh pit. Guttural, it’s classic riot grrrl because yes, at this point there are motifs, even in this genre. Ursula is making music that we need now, that we’ve always needed. Dear Void,
Sincerely, Brrrr! Shoulder! Dear Brrrr! Shoulder!.
Dear Suspicious, Absolutely. The being you describe is not your husband but a reptilian changeling. We know this because of his new cologne, used to mask a lack of human pheromones. An easy way to confirm this is to challenge your husband to a staring contest. If he is indeed a reptile he will demur, not wishing to reveal his lack of eyelids. Now listen to me very carefully, Suspicious—the best thing you can do is forget this. I told you nothing. Your husband is with you and will always be with you. Do you feel that? I am putting my finger over your mouth. Hush.
There are many potential reasons for your unlucky love life. The actual one is this: women are repulsed by the strange buzz emanating from your head, which is caused by hundreds of eggs laid in your brain by Sepa, the Egyptian centipedegod worshiped for centuries as a protector. The good news for you, B.S., is that your romantic problems are soon to be over. The Sepic hatchlings will eat your autonomic nervous system, compromising sexual arousal, and your body will become a handy vessel.
Send stuff to tardyeagle@tardyeagle.com
Sincerely, Suspicious
I am a regular guy with great values. I may not be the “prize rooster,” but I am far from unattractive. Among my friends I am known to be a sensitive, regular guy. My one problem is that women just don’t seem to want to date me! I try my damnedest, but it seems like every time I try to do the old “yawn and stretch” on one of my lady prospects, her shoulder turns cold. How do I turn my luck around?

My husband of ten years has been acting strangely recently. He wakes up quite early, and while I have never known him to “burn the midnight oil,” the past few weeks he hasn’t come home from work until late into the night. He’s also started wearing cologne, whereas previously his musk was neutral. Am I right to be suspicious?

The regular host of this bimonthly Sunday night showcase, Aimee Rose Ranger, is out of town, so she handed hosting duties off to one of our favorite local weirdos, Sam Ike. If you don't think he's funny, you are wrong and fuuuuhhhck you. Performing are comedians Al Park, Jere Pilapil, Matt Donaher, Matt Miller, Laura Burns, and more. Tbh WE'RE NOT SURE WHAT THEY'RE GONNA DO EXACTLY!!! The show features an assortment of craziness: standup, poetry, characters, or who knows what you'll get, but we can guarantee it will be entertaining. Dead serious that you are legit awful if you don't think that Sam Ike is funny. Seriously evaluate your life before you even think of speaking to me again, Mother.

A great beauty and a great star, but above all a great actress, Ingrid Bergman was among the most versatile leading ladies to grace the silver screen during her long, peripatetic career. While this month’s retrospective skips the Swedish roles that first brought her to international attention, it culls a representative sample from Bergman’s ample canon, setting classic works by iconic Hollywood directors (Hitchcock’s SPELLBOUND and NOTORIOUS, George Cukor’s GASLIGHT) alongside two of the equally legendary films Bergman made in Italy with her then-husband Roberto Rossellini (STROMBOLI and JOURNEY TO ITALY), without neglecting either her swan song, that other Bergman’s AUTUMN SONATA, or the sublime CASABLANCA, a romance as wry and radiant as the actress herself. — Matthew Martens
Just as fellow American Gothic writer William Faulkner, was to the strange ways and landscapes of the old American south,
so was H.P. Lovecraft to the ancient forests, fields, and cities of New England. Not content on focusing on the horrors of reality, however, Lovecraft looked further, exploring what would happen should real life collide with the unthinkable by employing elements of science fiction and mysticism. Through pushing the genre out into the realm of the occult and the fantastic, he would influence generations of writers, filmmakers, and even game developers. In recognition of his legacy, the Brattle is hosting five days of films to celebrate his 125th birthday. Some, like THE CALL OF CTHULHU and THE WHISPERER IN THE DARKNESS, are direct adaptations of his works. Others, like THE THING and HELLBOY, are inspired by the sort of cosmic creepiness Lovecraft was so fond of. — Alex Schab

http://www.bostonviewfinder.com DON’T THINK I’VE FORGOTTEN: CAMBODIA’S LOST ROCK AND ROLL (2014) dir. John Pirozzi 7/31 - 8/3 @BRATTLE http://www.BrattleFilm.org/2015/07/31/Dont-ThinkIve-Forgotten-Cambodias-Lost-Rock-And-Roll Cambodia in the 60s and early 70s was home to a vibrant and incredibly unique popular music scene. Exemplified by artists such as Sin Sisamouth, Ros Serey Sothea, and the Thra Kha band, the music seamlessly melded traditional Khmer melodies with elements of rock and roll, latin rhythms, crooner-style vocals, electric organs, and the occasional fuzzed-out guitar solo. The enthusiastic and open approach audible in recordings from the time generally leaves fresh ears with the feeling of a revelatory experience. Devastatingly, the rise to power of the totalitarian Khmer Rouge put an
end to this creative era as they systematically executed (or otherwise “made disappear”) most of the popular musicians, along with roughly a quarter of the entire Cambodian population. As noted in the trailer for this documentary, “If you want to eliminate values from past societies, you have to eliminate the artists.” Luckily for us, great art is not so easy to silence. — Stefan Grabowski
In checking out Twillerama, the travelling animation festival/ show put together by Brooklyn’s Morgan Miller, I see a very cool compendium of recent and classic short films (almost entirely animated). Beyond that I also see a new way to package content. A different way to celebrate content in this day and age we live
in where the old guard is dead and dying, and the new guard is taking baby steps, and going on first dates. This collection of shorts is crass, but the overarching idea is heady... AND stupid! Hosts Jeff Twiller and Randy J. Johnson (Vol. 1) or Rod Holcomb (Vol. 2) are animated, and they are streaming a live broadcast of their animation festival from a garbage dump (Vol. 1) and a rest stop (Vol. 2). A+ for presentation, and for bringing people together to watch and celebrate animation in a novel manner! Also, how did you know I want to throw music festivals at dumps and rest stops? Can’t be a coincidence. I’ve only gotten to see Vol. 1 thus far, in which our belligerent and awkwardly nervous pair of animated host friends showcase the likes of: George Griffin’s funny,The Club, “Damn bro that’s a lot of fucking dicks”, Latvia’s Signe Baumane’s Teat Beat of Sex in which a kirby trumps a squash sexually, and Danny and Simone Dresden’s Made You Cringe which celebrates(?) nonsexual(?) showers with dad. Very entertaining stuff. Very weird. Often crude, and sometimes thought provoking. All of it a smart celebration of an art form that doesn’t get enough love! More Twillerama please. — Dan Shea
Under the underground 8/21 Under the Underground #2: An Evening With Cate Giordano & Josh Deveau @Lilypad Spend an evening peering into the heavily constructed universes of two unique filmmakers! Giordano explores the culture of grotesque Americana in various states of drag, while Deveau’s absurdist approach to comedy will leave you laughing on an island somewhere between Tommy Wiseau and Tim & Eric. Come take a trip outside. You’ve been cooped up in your stinky room watching soap operas for far too long. It’s time to see how the world as it really turns. And it’s turning for better. Take a turn around the block and smile at all the people you see. They are out there, and some of them are ready to meet you. Come across a farmers’ market and buy some oysters from a nice bearded person. Come across a protest and join the struggle for equality.
R
What else is out there? Sidewalks. A canvas for chalk drawing, or just take a seat and see what unlikely characters stroll by. Talk about the weather with your local grocer. Plant a tomato in a vacant lot. As it grows, so will you. Watch its cute little leaves mature into a plump tasty harvest. The stalk will point you to the skies. The Wright brothers experimented with aviation, and so can you. Go to the top of a big hill and spread your wings. Soar into the sunset. As the sun sets on the community you have come to know and love, fly out to far off planets that might harbor communities just like your own. Experience the nebula. You see that star out there? Many creatures are making many far out things out there. Music without noise. Art without image. Space without space. They will make space for you though. You will come to see that the cosmos is just as friendly as the patrons at your cornerstore. It’s all out there, and all you have to do is get our there. — Warren Lowell
