The Great (DIY) Venue Hunt 2015 The amount of radical, under-the-radar bands starting in and coming to our region has increased dramatically in the past year, as has the need for more DIY venues. Read into the acronym however you like, but when I say DIY, I am talking about an alternative to the institutionalized and sanctioned performances spaces known as “bars” and “clubs”. By and large, these places exist to serve their owners and operators, not the community that fills their space (or avoids it) on a nightly basis. It may seem sad, but it is in line with the sad state of the modern world; a place where money equals means. Money is a part of life you can’t really get away from, but you can fight back against its nastiness and spit in its ugly face. If we band together as a united front, WE--the alternative communities that believe in advancing the culture of the outsider, could actually give these bars and clubs a run for their.. uh... ahem, you know.

Here’s the proposition: discover/cultivate an alternative performance space, and either share that information with a show-throwing friend, or just Do It Yourself! Galleries are often a good look, because they’re already an outlet for artists. See if your local gallery would host a music show or a film screening. Talk to your boss about using that empty office or showroom for a pop-up art show or intimate performance. Stop into that tire shop on your block and see if the owners would be interested in hosting a day-time BBQ and show some afternoon. Who knows, maybe they hate The Man, too. Remember to explain how organized our communities are, and how serious we are about our culture and respecting the spaces that are willing to host our various endeavors. Spaces like Video Underground, Out Of The Blue, The Lilypad, Green City Growers, dozens of churches, private residences, VFW Halls and other alternative spaces have all taken the plunge and stooped to our level. Let’s keep asking. Let’s ask every business in the city if they want to be part of this cultural movement. The worst they can say is “no.” -Sam Potrykus

This time around the NAVE GALLERY will be getting a piece o’ the pie sales on 6/30 from 5-11:30pm (take out or eat in). ALL VISUAL BOSTON is taking submissions for their next pop-up and you’d be wise to get in on this. Not only is it free to submit your image/ lens-based work to this sporadic and inspiring project but this edition will be featured within RICARDO De LIMA’s “Another Spectacle” gallery at the INSTITUTE OF CONTEMPORARY ART BOSTON as part of the 2015 JAMES AND AUDREY FOSTER PRIZE SHOW, which happens to be one of the best tickets in town this summer. All Visual Boston (AVB) was initiated back in 2012 by Western Masser TREVOR POWERS taking his cue directly from All Visual LA. Essentially, this is a travelling series of one-night-only digital slideshows that with live music accompanying the visuals. These events celebrate (and help bridge) the local artistic community while being free for artists to submit to and free for anyone to attend. Appropriately enough, the theme for this AVB is work that “celebrates, explores, questions, and demystifies collaboration” BATHAUS will be performing to serve as the soundtrack. Deadline to submit is July 3rd, 2015. Full details at www.allvisualboston.org/upcoming -CEEK

RIDE THE SNAKE RECORDS (2015) There are musical groups that constantly need to be hyped—usually because their music obfuscates local show-goers or only sparks tentative interest among the crowd. On the other hand, certain bands organically draw well-deserved recognition through energetic, passionate, and, most importantly, meaningful musical performance. And I think that was a big part of riot grrrl’s appeal in the first place, at least upon the subculture’s emergence in the early ’90s. I must say, Tomboy is without a doubt such a band that requires no hype, no introduction, no context. Everything you need to know blares through songs like “Sweetie” and “Anthem.” Madeline’s vocal performances bring an excitable degree of feminine angst, rarely found outside of the Pacific Northwest. It’s really her phrasing, her dulled intonation that frequently devolves into high-pitched shrieks of fury, which inspires the same outrage in Tomboy’s listeners. In general the album is heavier than anything you’d find on Bratmobile’s Pottymouth (1993) and follows the same choppy dynamic shifts you might find in early post-punk records by LiLiPUT. Tracks like “Emma” veer on the side of delicate though, still fitting with the overall rhythm of the album—albeit as more reflective pieces concerning past/present/ future romantic struggles. “Emma,” is an immediate favorite of mine from the record, for it breaks from the Tomboy’s typically energetic and forceful narrative. It’s the closest thing to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young I’ve heard on any riot grrrl record to date. Hanna also takes over Madeline’s role as drummer in the song “I’m In The Fucking Band,” which usually queues Madeline to provoke the crowd as she moves upfront, urging them to dig their heels into a song demanding free-form expression and reproaching male egotism. It truly does the legacy of artists like Amelia Fletcher and Allison Wolfe justice! You can buy the record at Ride the Snake‘s store. -Jero

CHAIN SMOKING ON EASTER

TH IRD UN CL E RE CO RD S (20 15) Honey Radar is channeling the spirit of Lou Reed on their dreamy, washedout release Chain Smoking On Easter. With bending, unstructured, bursts of saturated jangle-rock inspiration, Chain Smoking On Easter sounds like it could have been sampled straight from an old Velvet Underground demo. That is not a bad thing. A bedroom project started in Philadelphia by singer and guitarist Jason Henn, Honey Radar has released several collections of unpredictably structured songs on Indianapolis label Third Uncle Records. Henn’s signature short song lengths average out at under two minutes making each one feel more like a quick burst of noise than a song. It’s kind of like Honey Radar is releasing demos; a collection of Henn’s inspirations for moments in music. Each song has a distinct end, but they all run together like one long continuous recording. A wave of lo-fi, saturated guitar fizzing and loose crashing drums engulfs all of Chain Smoking On Easter. The songs fluctuate between dreamlike, psychedelic wisps and louder, crunchier rock jams. Bright, lightly strummed chords and slight drumstick tapping are made just slightly more kaleidoscopic by sitar sounding guitar picking on “Circuit in the Sunlight.” Chain Smoking gets a little raucous on songs like “Alabama Wax Habit” and “Rainbow Lollipop,” where eroded, fuzzed-out humming and turbulent drumming layer over the still good vibes of Honey Radar’s sound. Chain Smoking On Easter is like an assemblage of awesome musical moments from the mind of a fuzz box. Fifteen fragmented sounds all developed just enough to be roughly one minute long songs. Chain Smoking is the definition of short and sweet; just fifteen quick bursts of perfect hazy rock. -Emma Buchanan

FR OZ EN NIAGR A FA LLS PROFOUND LORE (2015) If you’re not already aware (and you really should be) Prurient is the main alias of the insanely prolific Dominick Fernow, keeper of several other aliases including Vatican Shadow and Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement and played in groups and projects including Ash Pool and the mighty Cold Cave. This undisputed titan in the electronic noise/experimental field has new releases out constantly, under various names and in various formats including tapes, EPs, singles, splits, and collaborations. Frozen Niagara Falls, a double album, is the spiritual successor to 2011’s game-changing Bermuda Drain. On that album, Fernow reinvented the Prurient moniker by blending influences from across his other projects: the pulsing techno of Vatican Shadow, the synth-pop sheen of Cold Cave, the blasphemous black metal exorcisms of Ash Pool, and the straight-up feedback and distortion noise blasts of earlier Prurient were synthesized into an excitingly consistent, well-thought-out whole. While still far from accessible, it definitely brought a lot of new listeners with it. This new record is, if anything, even less accessible at points than its predecessor. The lyrics touch on religious themes, sacrifice, self-harm, drug dependency, and loss. However, these themes are never used for shock value. The music may be often abrasive, but the underlying core of the record comes from a place of beauty. There is a raw emotional quality to the screaming, an honesty which can be much more provocative than some aggressive, blustery, macho thing. The more ambient synth interludes, when they do manage to rise above the fury, are gorgeous and majestic. In an absolutely massive catalog, full of massive noises and bold statements, it may be that Frozen Niagara Falls is Fernow’s magnum opus. -John Bittrich

In the face of persecution from Catholics during the 11th Century Crusades, the Ashkenazi Jews of the Rhine River valley in Western Europe fled east, farther into Germany, and there formed autonomous, insular communities. Once removed from outside influence, a unique culture took shape and with it a new language – Yiddish. A surprising mixture of Germanic, Hebrew, Aramaic, Arabic, Slavic and Romance languages, Yiddish became the primary spoken language of millions of Jews for nearly a millennium. By the age of mechanical reproduction written Yiddish journalism, literature and poetry was also thriving.

In the 20th Century the Holocaust nearly eradicated the Jewish population in Europe. The Nazi genocide aimed to eliminate all traces of Jewish cultural and economic influence. Much of their art, music and literature was stolen or destroyed. Following Germany’s surrender in 1945 many Holocaust survivors sought refuge in the US. Wishing to leave the trauma of the Old World behind, most carried with them few if any Yiddish books. Assimilation took hold - the old tongue remained a mystery to the survivors’ Americanized offspring - and after one generation Yiddish was near extinction. One member of that second generation, Hampshire College student Aaron Lansky, began in 1973 to learn, speak and read Yiddish in order to better understand the rich but increasingly obscured pre-Holocaust Jewish culture. He traveled to New York City and elsewhere interviewing elders, hearing their stories and collecting their Yiddish books, which were often discarded by next of kin. By the 1980s Lansky had amassed a huge collection of books and recordings, and in 1989 he received a MacArthur Genius Grant in support of his dedicated cultural preservation initiative. In June 1997 a permanent facility for the Yiddish Book Center opened to the public on a 10-acre site at Hampshire College campus. In addition to housing over 1 million Yiddish texts, the Center offers workshops, courses, fellowships and publications on the Yiddish language and Jewish culture, and presents film screenings, art exhibitions and musical performances by artists of the Jewish Diaspora. Brian 4 Ever, poet/singer/songwriter/ motivational speaker, collaborating with Amanda Burgess on accordion, is creating music that will make your ears perk up and your heart beat. Creating a strange but relatable soundtrack to your life on the East Coast, Brian and Amanda are a dynamic duo. If you haven’t seen them perform live, you need to. Perhaps, your life will make a little more sense afterward. Lyrically heavy and poetically indebted, on his 2014 release of Sole Bellow, Folan sings of love, existentialism, suppressed memory, pop culture, and death. Blending altrock, noise, and hardcore poetry, on the fourth track he cries a laundry list of issues and then upon some self-realization/editing, leading into a rousing chorus, sings, “…this is way too cathartic, not enough rock ‘n’ roll, you wanted an anthem, oh-kay…” Utilizing every and any instrument at his disposal (i.e. vox, keyboard, guitar, sax, drums), Folan paints pictures with pained breaths and incites cliffhangers with brief pauses. The tonal qualities of Burgess’ accordion are pushed, lending their dramatic notes to the overall story line of Folan’s lyrics. The April 2015 release of Jacob 4 Ever, heard through the Brian 4 Ever Bandcamp, is devoted to friend and AS220 Live Arts director, Jacob Nathan. Friends are important to Folan as is the issue of money or lack thereof, which was addressed at AS220’s Resident Gallery in Providence, in his mixed media show “$$$$$$$$$$” in May. Burgess has her own show, with an opening on June 6th. -Sarah Samways

IC V IS IO N S (2 014)

Easily my top record of 2015 so far, Prophetic Visions, the second album from Nü-klē-er Blast Suntan, finds the band at their strongest amid a move from Georgia to Oregon and a lineup change bringing in a new bassist and singer. The record continues both SPHC’s commitment to excellence and to releasing some of the wildest hardcore going. Nü-klē-er Blast Suntan’s mix of crustcore and psychedelia sounded fully formed on their debut lp, Blot Out The Worthless Sun, yet Prophetic Visions pushes it exponentially further. Featuring arguably the band’s best production and fullest sound, the record also boasts their best songwriting. The more straightforward fury of their two 7”s is channeled into the Hawkwind-esque psychedelic rock of the first album to make something unique. Just how unique is difficult to put into words, but hey who needs words when you have Bandcamp? Stream it below. And keep your eyes peeled for more classics on the way from SPHC. -Chris Defalco

Providence’s TIMEGHOST is the main project of Adam Morosky, a musician and performance artist that I have seen do some wild and freakish things all in front of an audience. He experiments with sound, being capable of creating a thumping techno and a highly off-putting, deviance-dripping bit of electro-acoustic creep, one right after the other. Morosky’s performance demands to be seen (lucky for you he’s from around here), as he is one performer who, in his live performance, goes well beyond what he may have committed to posterity in the form a recording. Live, the electronic signal of the performance transmits not just through his speakers but through an array of strobing lights and even through his own body via prosthetic devices. A dark worldview is Morosky’s. Obsessions with the cellular signals coursing through our bodies, and the meeting of electronics and our very own flesh give an even darker hue to the glitching and throbbing electronics of the other. The other being Morosky. And finally we get a full-length from the longtime nightmare-soundtracking Rhode Islander. CELLULAR is fitting title for this modern-sounding and hair-raising 8 song offering. “Cellular Automata” gets right down to it, using sounds of cellular interference as part of its rhythmic stew. This is the first time, but not at all close to the last time we hear that eerie and familiar crackling noise. TIMEGHOST is the work of an electronic musician who has accepted and wholly embraced digital electronic music making, and also loves to completely fuck with it. “Dissection Theater” is a negative industrial encounter. It plays out like a thudding, harrowing electronic punk meltdown, which if you think about it, is just inherently really fucking awesome. CHONDRITIC SOUND and LOAD RECORDS have released this seriously intoxicating electronic music statement. They knew what was up. I am very happy to be listening to this right now. It will stick with you if your ears are open. Dan Shea

SUMMER fitnessing

N LA O RT nk O Hu K le IC c N us M by

I,

Hey there, beach bums and pool jockeys. Summer is just around the river bend and you know what that means: SWIMSUIT SEASON! Yes, it’s that special time of year that falls between Way-Too-Horny Season and Bed-Cookies Season. Regardless if you’re trying to fit into your two-piece, three-piece, or Swimtux, these exercises are guaranteed to give you the tone you crave. Whether you need to skim some fat or you want an ab, the following routines should get your body powdered in time to hit the agua.

Summer is here and you know what that means: endless days and nights of sweltering heat and jealousy while sifting through your friends’ internet pictures of lake houses! But the joke’s on them because you know what’s more fun than being with your best friends and also someone you have a ton of sexual tension with but haven’t slept with yet and getting a bunch of groceries and beer and eating pie in cutoffs and laughing until your throat hurts and then stopping for a sec and the trees are so tall and then you look down and when you look up you guys kiss (not everyone but just that person from earlier with the sexual tension)?

PUSH AROUNDS

ROOSEVELT CIRCLES

Equipment Needed: Wrist weights Muscles Targeted: Dimtim & Propotisus

Equipment Needed: Rolling Chair Muscles Targeted: Limploids & Flapendos

Lie with your body flat on the ground and feet together. Strap two weights to each wrist and position your hands at shoulder width, but flat on the ground about 7 inches above your head. Flail each arm as if your pushing someone in a mosh pit. Do 3 sets of about 9 flails, resting with a book in between sets.

Position yourself in the rolling chair with your feet on the foot rests. Without moving your legs, move around the room in the rolling chair. Complete as many laps as you can in 30 minutes. Rest and intern the Japanese.

A STAYCATION!!!!!!!

Equipment Needed: None Muscles Targeted: Flivums, Shatners, and Dikloins

SEATED REVERSE KEGELS

A staycation is a great way to save money, time, and brain space because you won’t have as many memories! No matter where you live, there’s always something fun you haven’t tried right in your own backyard! Here are some fun ideas for those extra days you have to spend mostly alone.

Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, your knees together and locked and with your feet facing North. Squat down, making sure not move your legs or change the altitude of your head until you can feel your pincers quiver. Repeat for 10 minutes at 350°.

KNOCK EM DOWNS Equipment Needed: Buckets, sand, and small child Muscles Targeted: Pleetuls and Armoirs Position the small child with buckets and sand within arm’s reach. Instruct child to build a sand castle. Nothing fancy; we don’t need̊ a sand fucking palace. Once completed, extend your right arm forward in a swooping motion to knock the sand castle over and exclaim, “What, is my house not good enough for you?!” Rest between sets while child rebuilds sand castle. Be sure to hydrate and remind the child to hurry the fuck up or you’ll call Santa and have his toys burned. Repeat with left arm.

CUMSHITTERS

Equipment Needed: Average chair Muscles Targeted: Hoiners, Bleetles, and SoftBones Sit in the chair with legs apart. Identify your pelvic floor muscles by cinching the muscles you would to stop urination midstream. Gradually release these muscles, pushing them as far apart as you can. Release of urine is expected; release of blood or bile is desired. This is exercise is good if you have an excess of blood. Repeat until bloodless.

NORWEGIAN PRESS Equipment Needed: Veënthøvűșę Muscles Targeted: Iblemhiers, Shotskys, and Tainters Stand with your lower body in the Veënthøvűșę, your belly button resting above the lbringen. Place your hands on the fặbẽnchen, and slowly tug until hard. You should be raising the fặbẽnchen upwards towards the vertical yỗrtlửrỳỳ until you feel a slight strain, then lower gradually. For that extra burn, attach any fịŁjōųg you have lying around. Do 5 sets, decreasing 15, 13, 11, 9, 7, resting in between for 30 metric seconds.

HORSE-OFFS Equipment needed: Horse Muscles Targeted: Biltleys, Mutalis, and Hoovers Stand facing horse. In one f luid motion, hop on top of the horse. Hold brief ly, then dismount horse. Repeat until horse grows agitated. 

BOSTON comedy!!!!! Sketchaus Presents: Ike & Allen / Bad Art

THURSDAY, JUNE 4 AT 9PM

ImprovBoston • 40 Prospect St., Cambridge $12 • Students: $10 w/ ID

Explore your world. Take a walking tour of your city’s downtown area and write down the names of all the hideous building from the 70s and find out the architect who designed them and talk about them to people who don’t care! Nurture your green thumb. Try potting some plants- but that only takes about twenty minutes—so then you can make sun tea and think about going to a movie later maybe. Get back to basics. Write a nice long letter—over and over again! Rewrite it with your non-dominant hand, the Palmer Method, some bubble lettering, emoji, or just plain blood. Surely something will get through to The Devil! Reset. Make up a new WiFi network name that best represents your quirky sense of humor and then blow your brains out! Unwind. Ultimately, a staycation should be about relaxation. Mimic what you see other people do to relax and see if it works for you! Epsom salts, having a partner who respects your needs, and farmer’s markets are all great places to start! As you can see, there’s no right way to spend a staycation because they aren’t really an actual thing so much as just not going on vacation! Enjoy your time away from work and other humans because soon enough it will be Thanksgiving and you have to go to Ohio! HAGS! 

FEATURED FILM SERIES THE FILMS OF ROY ANDERSSON 6/10 - 7/2 @MFA www.MFA.org/Programs/Series/TheFilms-of-Roy-Andersson

YOU, THE LIVING (2007) dir. ROY ANDERSSON (6/11 & 6/12) @HFA

Actually, love means never having to say much of anything, at least according to Roy Andersson’s A Swedish Love Story (1970), whose dyad of dewey-souled spring chicks gets by on colloquies comprised of hums, chuckles, coos, and other close-cuddle cluckings. As embedded in an all-show, no-tell tale of middle-class families pervaded by status anxiety and loneliness, it serves as a kind of salute to one of our most popular consolations. The MFA’s presentation of Andersson’s features traces the punctuated arc of his persistent humanism from its beginnings in granular melodrama to its more recent orientation in gently absurdist formal experimentation, culminating in 2014’s A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence. - Matthew Mar

“Sam once said to me,” Jim Jarmusch recalls in a 1996 documentary on Samuel Fuller, “”When you start your script, if the

first scene doesn’t give you a hard-on, throw the damn thing away,”” counsel given fullblooded embodiment by the films showing at the HFA this June. THE NAKED KISS (1964), PICKUP ON SOUTH STREET (1953), and THE CRIMSON KIMONO (1959) each begin with a noirful bang styled after a tabloid broadsheet’s high-strung pop, offset in turn by the gravitas of a secreted dick scouting for truth. Such filmic mannerisms-as flamboyant and lovable as his own-- echo Fuller’s professional beginnings in journalism and pulp fiction and invigorate this set of lusty, groundbreaking genre films following troubled outsiders, hyper-clever women and men alike (his heroic antis, if you will) through their urban travails, parsing the interplay of virtue and status, duty and ethics, truth and testimony. - Rebecca DeLucia

Actually, I’m not sure it’s possible for a film with both of these actresses in it to ever be mundane; each woman capable of (at the time, anyway) projecting their weird inner radiance upon everything around them. Duvall is Millie. Spacek is Pinky. They work together out in the desert @ a rehabilitation center, eventually becoming roommates. And then the women’s personalities begin to wander off into some kind of Lynchian, dream reality. The film’s stunning, unsettling, and regularly encountered murals somehow elicit a sense of wonder, and of dread, all at once. In the film the murals are painted by Willie (the third woman), while in real life an artist named Bodhi Wind brought the costarring murals to life. The film’s score further reinforces the strange vibrations set into motion by Altman, Spacek, and Duvall in this film. And it is these strange vibrations that may take hold of you if you choose to watch Robert Altman’s dream vision play out across the haunted desert. - Dan Shea

FIANCÉS (1963) 6 THE dir. ERMANNO OLMI

@HFA This very early entry in Olmi’s decades-spanning career is a work of neorealism on a par with De Sica, a fragmented yet utterly grounded narrative about a Sicilian couple whose engagement is challenged by separation when Giovanni is offered an unturn-downable, depressingly distant steel-industry job. THE LONG GOODBYE (1973) dir. ROBERT ALTMAN @BRATTLE Watch Elliott Gould’s career peak and Robert Altman’s coast at its majestic early ‘70s altitude in the first (probably) and finest (arguably) mumble-noir ever made, in which a washed-up, washed-out Philip Marlowe sleepwalks his wisecracks across a sunsoaked LA steeped in the usual sin. SHORT CUTS (1993)

8 dir. ROBERT ALTMAN

@HFA Medflies descend on Los Angeles, where our darlin’ director plops (sprays?) us into the fray of nine households whose stories, adapted from Raymond Carver, are expertly interwoven, portrayed by one blast-away cast (Lily Tomlin, Tim Robbins, Tom Waits, etc., and there’s even a fucking cameo by Alex Trebek).

PSYCHOTRONIC MOVIES IN OUR ZONE

3 WOMEN (1977) dir. ROBERT ALTMAN 6/13, 7:00PM @HFA HTTP://HCL.HARVARD.EDU/HFA/ A lesser known film in the Altman canon, 3 WOMEN, is perhaps the strangest film that Robert Altman ever made. The legendary director is known for many reasons, but the making of somewhat hallucinogenic, waking dream character studies is not one that is usually mentioned. Despite this, his 3 WOMEN exists, and it is an intoxicating experience to be had. Here Altman cast two of the most atypically beautiful, and just plain amazing actresses of all time opposite each other. That’s Sissy Spacek and Shelley Duvall (an

THE NIGHTMARE (2015) @BRATTLE From the director of Room 237 comes another mindbending, genre-defying documentary. This time, the subject is the utterly terrifying phenomenon of sleep paralysis, complete with reenactments of actual sufferers’ hallucinations. Good thing it’s at midnight, because you’re not sleeping afterwards. Also screens 6/6

THE COMPLETE SAM FULLER 6/19 - 8/30 @HFA http://HCL.Harvard.edu/HFA/

AMERICAN DENIAL (2015) dir. LLEWELLYN SMITH @MFA An outstanding scholarly lineup featuring Michelle Alexander, Danielle Allen, Vincent Brown and others marks this sobering yet lively exposition of Gunnar Myrdal’s 1944 study, The American Dilemma, and the lineage of post-bellum social, legal, and institutional racism in the US from Reconstruction to the present. Director in person!

MAN (1984) 9 REPO dir. ALEX COX

@BRATTLE The all-time classic of gonzo punk-rock sci-fi noir is back! Punk-as-fuck Emilio Estevez bores of his hardcore lifestyle and joins a team of unscrupulous repo agents. Intrigue ensues, including dead aliens, flying cars, Harry Dean Stanton, and the Circle Jerks. A PIGEON SAT ON A BRANCH REFLECTING ON EXISTENCE (2014) dir. ROY ANDERSSON

@MFA Andersson’s so-called Living Trilogy concludes with a chapter as winningly off-beat and off-kilter as its predecessors, a tender mind-bender about a pair of novelty salesmen that won last year’s Golden Lion at Venice, and little wonder: it’s a salve for the self-sick soul.

13 DARKMAN (1990)

26 THE BURNING (1981)

dir. SAM RAIMI @BRATTLE Before he was Oskar Schindler, before he began kicking asses and taking names in Taken, Liam Neeson was a disfigured vigilante out for justice in Sam Raimi’s first foray into the superhero genre. Fear the man who can’t feel pain.

THE DEMON (1978) dir. YOSHITARO NOMURA @HFA Two women, one a wife and owner of a printing press and the other a barely-kept mother of three, confront the deadbeat man who binds them, leaving the children exposed to the ravages of interpersonal mayhem.

(1983) 19 ANGST dir. GERALD KARGL

@COOLIDGE Disturbing and technically innovative, this unique art house/exploitation relic boasts impressive cinematography that portrays a recently deinstitutionalized psychopath. Upon release the film shocked audiences throughout Europe and was quickly banned, but has since undergone reappraisal as “well done” cinema. Also screens 6/20

dir. TONY MAYLAM @COOLIDGE You know the drill: summer camp caretaker is burned and left for dead, horny counselors start gruesomely dying. What set this one apart is the embarrassment of pre-stardom turns. Come for the Tom Savini effects, stay for teenage Jason Alexander! Also screens 6/27 KIDS IN THE HALL: BRAIN CANDY (1996) dir. KELLY MAKIN @COOLIDGE Rather than take the SNL route of padding a skit to 90 minutes, the Canadian troupe’s feature debut is a pitch black comedy of shady pharmaceuticals and flipper babies. They never made another, but we’ll always have Cancer Boy.

DIR. P.T. ANDERSON 6/5 @ BRATTLE Joaquin Phoenix is dopey PI from Lalaland trying to crack the case in another idiosyncratic gem from the Californian auteur.

LOSING GROUND (1982) dir. 24 THE SEVENTH SEAL (1957)

dir. INGMAR BERGMAN @BRATTLE One of the most hailed movies of all time, Ingmar Bergman’s rumination on life in the face of death has aged superbly since it was first seen and is not just required viewing for the upper middle class dinner party.

25 WILD STRAWBERRIES (1957)

dir. INGMAR BERGMAN @BRATTLE Another masterpiece from the height of Bergman’s career, Wild Strawberries’ insightful truths about past regrets and learning to be at peace with oneself at the end of a long life has made the film lost none of its timeless power. THE LIFE AND CRIMES OF DORIS PAYNE (2014) dir. KIRK MARCOLINA & MATTHEW POND @MFA Wildly successful octogenarian jewel thief Doris Payne is a con artist, sure. But maybe also a hero? To hear her tell it ... well, you really ought to hear her tell it. The selfstyled Dorothy Dandridge of the jewel heist demimonde gained the confidence of her filmmakers -- why not yours? Boston’s Unofficial Little Tokyo The Shops at Porter 1815 Massachusetts Ave Cambridge, MA 02140 Little Tokyo exists in Boston! It’s unofficial, the size of an alley, and located in a Porter Square mall. The Shops at Porter hosts a collection of mom-andpops serving specialized Japanese cuisine. These aren’t fancy fusion restaurants with encyclopedia-sized menus. No – these pocket-sized establishments serve only the items they do best. These restaurants do not compete, but rather create a real cultural experience where you’ll find Japanese patrons feeling at home. You’ll find this enclave steps from the MBTA stop. A tour of foods is available including tempura, sushi, hamburg, ramen and moshi. Each establishment has several tables where you’ll be seated adjacent to the counter where your food is prepared. Cash is king in Boston’s unofficial Little Tokyo so don’t forget to hit an ATM before visiting. This is food for the people, by the people. Everything is affordable, with lunch specials starting at $6. An interesting eat is the Japanese Hamburg at Café Mami. This take on Salisbury steak dates back to the western influence in 19th century Japanese ports. If you venture into the alley, you’ll find excellent donbori, ramen and tempura. Finally, the Japonaise Bakery & Cafe (temporarily closed) provides amazing desserts. For $1.50, you can eat mochi flavors like green tea, pistachio and coconut. Boston’s unofficial Little Tokyo has a kind of magic that we risk losing if our cities become playgrounds for the rich. This is food made for the working class. It’s food made with character, hard work and pride. — D. Dabek
