Dear Bosco Tech family--
Welcome to the 2025-2026 academic year! I hope your summer was positive and that you enjoyed some down time with loved ones. Although the summer seemed to fly past, I think we’re all ready to gear up for the coming months.
A very special welcome to our freshman families-we’re so glad you’re here and look forward to helping your sons thrive in the next four years. I hope that they enjoyed the Freshman Summer Program and the opportunity to explore our unique technology programs.
Many of our seniors (and a few juniors) are returning from impressive summer internships with new perspectives. Working at companies and organizations like Boeing, the City of Hope and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has given these young men valuable insights into their future studies and professions. I’m confident the experiences also imparted lasting lessons in time management, networking, and building strong resumes. I’d encourage juniors to look into the Tech’s one-of-a-kind internship training program that guides candidates in everything from job interviews to workplace etiquette.
Join us on Thursday, August 14, at Back to School Night, starting at 6 p.m. You’ll have the opportunity to walk through an abbreviated version of your son’s class schedule, meeting his teachers and reviewing what he’ll be learning this year.
Please mark your calendar for Friday, August 22, when our dedicated Parent Council will host a very special BBQ with music, raffles, fun and more. It’s a great opportunity to get to know more Tech families and to chat with instructors. See the flyer in this issue of The Gear for details.
I’m looking forward to seeing your family on campus in the coming weeks. Here’s to a great new school year!
Godblessyouandyourfamily,

Dear Bosco Tech Students, Faculty and families,
Welcome back to a brand new school year! We are so excited to begin another chapter of learning, growing, and journeying together as a Salesian family. This year, we look to a modern guide and inspiration of another Salesian Saint--Blessed Carlo Acutis (the canonization of the Catholic Church’s first millennial saint, will take place on September 7, 2025).
Carlo was a teenager just like many of you, who lived his life with joy, purpose, and deep faith. Though only 15 when he passed away, Carlo lived fully what Don Bosco always taught: to be “a good Christian and an honest citizen.”
He went to daily Mass, prayed with love, and saw the Eucharist as his “highway to Heaven.” But he didn’t stop there. He also stood up for the bullied, helped the poor, and used his talents in technology to spread the Good News.
In Carlo, we see that holiness is possible–even in sneakers, in school, and online. To learn more about Blessed Carlo Acutis, visit: https://www.catholic news agency.com/ news/264735/10-things-you-should-know-about-blessed-carlo-acutis
As we begin this school year, let us take inspiration from Carlo’s life::
• To be people of faith, not just on Sundays, but every day.
• To be people of service, always looking out for others.
• To be people of excellence, in our studies and our actions.
• And above all, to be like Carlo–-authentic, joyful, and holy. Together, may we grow as good Christians and honest citizens, just as Don Bosco dreamed–and just as Blessed Carlo Acutis lived.
Welcome back-–let’s make this year a blessing!

As we move into the new school year, please review these important guidelines. For a full description, see the Parent-Student Handbook on the school’s website.
In the event of an absence, please notify the Attendance Office at (626) 940-2002 (or attendance@boscotech.edu) and leave a message on the answering service by 9 a.m. The parent/guardian calling must state the following:
a) student’s name, year, and ID #
b) reason for the student’s absence
c) phone number where the parent/guardian may be reached during the day.
Upon returning to campus, the student must present a signed note to the attendance office stating the dates and reason for the absence. If the student was treated by a physician, he must bring a note from the doctor. The note must state: a) the date the student is permitted to return to school and b) any restrictions regarding participation in school activities such as PE, sports or technology.
A student is tardy to school if he is not in his assigned place when the first period bell rings. If tardy, he must obtain a late slip from the Attendance Office. A note from a parent/guardian should always be presented explaining the reason for tardiness, although this does not ensure the student an excused tardy. Disciplinary action will be taken if the reason for the tardy is not recognized as valid.
Students are given nine excused or unexcused tardies before detentions are issued. They will begin to serve Saturday detentions after every tenth tardy. Parents will be contacted to develop a plan that will assist the student in being punctual to class. Fifteen tardies per semester are the maximum allowed before credit for the course becomes null.
Parents are asked not to drop off or pick up students in the front administration parking lot because of the inherent danger this causes students on foot; instead, parents are asked to use the south parking lot to drop off/pick up students before/after school. Please observe the ‘no parking’ areas in front of the school, including the bus stop and designated emergency vehicle zones. Parents’ vehicles are never allowed on campus unless by specific permission.

Last summer, Tech rising junior Marcos Posada (CSEE ’27) made a last-minute trip to a science and engineering convention that completely changed his life in the best possible way, he tells us!
In 2024, Marcos attended OpenSauce, where engineers, hobbyists, and artists gather under the umbrella term “makers” to showcase wild projects. Think Maker Faire, but curated by YouTubers.
Founded by William Osman in 2023, the event more than doubled in size and scope to more than 20,000 attendees and 500 exhibitors by 2024. Learning about it the week prior to the event, Marcos attended as a spectator.
“I didn’t know it then, but that trip lit a fire under me that would burn for the next year straight,” Marcos says. “I saw projects from regular people—people like me—doing insane stuff. I walked out of that venue knowing I’d be back, but next time not as a spectator. I’d return with something that would make people stop in their tracks.”
And stop in their tracks they did! Using high-tech skills and industry equipment from the Tech, Marcos designed and built a giant walking, six-legged HEXBUG Spider toy robot. The process was ‘a yearlong grind’ for the honor student, especially when coupled with a rigorous course load that included studying for his AP classes and maintaining a super high GPA!
A highlight of the entire 2025 OpenSauce experience: upon seeing the robot in action, William Osman himself pronounced it ‘sick,’ and shared with Marcos that he wasn’t building anything like it when he was in high school!
Marcos is already planning next year’s exhibit entry (hint: it might be a fully autonomous drone!) Read about his amazing experience in his own words, what famous YouTubers met his HEXBUG, and the helpful people to whom he is grateful at: https://files.constantcontact.com/46e50122301/8fe874452852-4b3d-addc-ff258ad9b4f8.pdf
Congratulations to seniors Nicholas Renteria and Tomas Diego Carranza, whose films were spotlighted on August 2 by Indie Film LA, a collaboration between film festival organizers, cinema and distribution companies, and industry professionals.
The screening of the student films, at LA’s SOHO Cinema Club, recognized the young creative’s talent and cinematography. Both Tomas and Nicholas recently wrapped up summer internships, along with classmate Liam Lopez (bottom left photo), with MUSE TV, a digital media network currently seen in 132 countries and a YouTube channel getting more than 11 million views. MUSE TV was founded by Michael Sandoval, a Tech alumnus. Congratulations to these talented young men, and maybe future Oscar winners!

Now that Bosco Tech’s ninth grade class has successfully completed the two-week Freshman Summer Program (FSP), they are gearing up for the start of the official academic year.
During the first semester, freshmen will spend their technology time rotating through three introductory programs of their choosing. These overview courses will inform students of the various classes, exciting projects, and college and career opportunities associated with that technology major.
Every six weeks, parents and guardians are required to attend a special meeting with teachers, called the Technology Information Session (TIS). Please note the following dates:
• TIS #1 Wednesday, Sept. 10, 7 p.m.
• TIS #2 Thursday, Oct. 9, 5:30 p.m., following the 5:45 p.m. Freshman College Info Meeting
• TIS #3 Sunday, Nov. 16, 11 a.m., in technology classrooms, following 9:30 a.m. Freshman Tie Ceremony
These important meetings provide parents information about each program so the final decision in selecting a technology major will involve both the parent and student.
On Saturday, December 13, each freshman and at least one parent or guardian must attend Technology Selection Day. Students will be scheduled, in order of their GPA, to be interviewed before determining their final technology choice. This important day results in the student being placed into the technology program that he will study for the next three and a half years at Bosco Tech. Questions regarding the technology programs offered at Bosco Tech should be directed to each technology chair or to the Assistant Principal of Science & Technology Luis Garza at lgarza@ boscotech.edu.
Did you know that Bosco Tech’s Tech Support program provides individualized academic assistance available to all students seeking extra guidance or tutoring? Tech Support works throughout the semester, and can be arranged to begin at the start of the school year. It is provided by both instructors and National Honor Society members, for peer-to-peer tutoring.
Tech Support is not only for those needing assistance, but for anyone looking for extra help in maintaining grades. If you have questions, please contact Mr. John Garcia at jgarcia@boscotech.edu or (626) 940-2000.

As I arrived at the freshman retreat, I was greeted with cheers and excitement. In addition, I saw many of the kids I knew, making me feel comfortable and at home. In that moment, I felt prepared for the fun day ahead and activities waiting for us in the evening. After the cheering had stopped, I was immediately directed to the MPR to drop off my luggage and told to go to my classes.
My favorite part of the day was when we were told that popsicles were being handed out on the mall. Everyone immediately rushed towards the mall unaware that it was a trap, a barrage of water balloons that seemed to block out the sun were now facing us. In the panic, I continued to run towards the balloons to get some for myself. After I had reached the tubs of balloons, I grabbed as many as I could and hurled some towards my friends. These actions resulted in me being drenched from head to toe because of the water balloon fight.

After the fight had ceased, we were all herded to hear about our next activity which was the scavenger hunt. During the scavenger hunt we ran around the entire campus collecting clues and parts of a picture of St. John Bosco. It was revealed earlier that this hunt would decide where we slept so everyone was running to find each clue and piece of the puzzle. My group had gotten eight and decided to sleep in the MPR.
The final event for Friday night was reconciliation on the football field. As we gathered in our groups we talked about God and shared our thoughts and feelings about the night. After reconciliation everyone prepared to go to sleep. Although we had chosen the MPR as our place to sleep for the night we decided to sleep outside because of how hot it became with so many people inside one room.
In the morning, we all got ready to go to the beach and packed our sleeping bags. As we got on the beach most of us were excited to finally be able to swim despite the freezing water. At the beach we made core memories and bonded over the experience. Towards the end of the day, we had Mass, which was an interesting experience, this was because we were on the beach and there were massive speakers playing music at a restaurant nearby.
When we arrived back at Bosco Tech, we were relieved and tired from the day and ready to go home. We finished our closing ceremony and were happy to see our parents. Throughout my freshman retreat I was constantly enjoying myself whether it be the many various activities, the comradery, or fun at the beach. I was happy with the experience and hope to be able to volunteer next year for the new incoming freshmen class of 2030.
Thank you, Matthew!

Their in-depth gllmpse of college life was hosted by Bosco Tech alum Lorenzo Pedroza (CSEE ‘20). A longtime friend of the Cortez family, Lorenzo who has just completed his master’s degree in Engineering at SLO. During the tour, he gave kudos to Bosco Tech for preparing him well for the rigorous SLO under-graduate and graduate programs.

A busy day on campus, they toured the engineering buildings and labs, shadowed an engineering class, viewed the dorms, had lunch in the dining commons, and even went to a local farmer’s market in town. Sean was fascinated to see how hands-on the class was. Sean, Jeremiah and Raymond were impressed and excited about college life and SLO is at the top of their lists!
While there, the families celebrated Lorenzo’s upcoming graduation from SLO’s graduate engineering program. Lorenzo, the Bosco Tech Community congratulates you on your achievement and sends you our best wishes. Godspeed!
