Faith, Family, Football—We Are Bosco Tech Go, Tigers!
Message from the Principal Dear Bosco Tech Family— At our recent awards event for grades 10-12 (last year’s freshmen to juniors) I was reminded again of how our students are to be commended for doing so well under the challenges posed by the safer-at-home measures of the last year and a half. We are so proud of all our young men and their many accomplishments and are extremely happy to see them back on campus, interacting with their classmates and instructors. As the year picks up speed, I would like to remind you of a few upcoming events and dates. • We will celebrate the traditional Salesian Triduum, or three days of dedicating the school year to the Lord, on Sept. 1-3. During this important time of prayer and reflection, students will have the opportunity to participate in reconciliation and a character assembly. The Triduum will culminate in a student body liturgy on Sept. 3. Please note that all students must be in formal dress for Mass. • All students are asked to attend Bosco Tech’s Virtual College Fair on Thurs., Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. Please see the school’s general calendar to register in advance. • As a service to our community, the Tech will host COVID-19 vaccine clinics on Sept. 10 and Oct. 1, from 2 to 7 p.m. Pfizer (ages 12+), Johnson & Johnson, and Moderna (ages 18+) vaccines will be available. • On Monday, Sept. 13, please join Tech President Memo Gutierrez for the State of the School address, hosted by the Alumni Association. Beginning at 6 p.m., Mr. Gutierrez will unveil the details of our Strategic Plan and Master Plan for our new facilities. These plans are the culmination of important feedback from parents, alumni and staff. Access to the meeting will be made available closer to the date. • Freshman parents are asked to join us virtually on Wed., Sept. 15, for two important meetings. Starting at 5:45 p.m., the ninth grade College Information Night is a great way to focus on your son’s future plans—he will be a senior before you know it! This meeting will be directly followed, at 7 p.m., by the first Technology Information Session. • Spirit Week is approaching. This year, the annual celebration of camaraderie and brotherhood is Sept. 20-24. Please encourage your sons to participate in what promises to be a fun and engaging experience. • That same week, our freshmen will end their first rotation on Sept. 21 and begin Tech Rotation #2 on Sept. 22. Please email Mr. Brendan Chua at bchua@boscotech.edu if you have any questions. We continue to vigilantly promote safety and good hygiene on campus. Daily health screenings are becoming routine for students, hand-washing stations are fully stocked, hand sanitizers are plentiful, classroom filtration systems are running, desks are safely spaced, and students are reminded to always keep their masks on. Tech Parent Appointed to Board of Trustees The Bosco Tech Board of Trustees welcomes Parent Council Member Mrs. Nesrin Bunkheila-Aribi who has been appointed to the Board’s Parent Representative position. The appointee to the two-year position is responsible for addressing the interests of current Bosco Tech parents at Board meetings and acting as a conduit to parents on Board matters, as appropriate. Mrs. Bunkheila-Aribi , whose son, Jad Aribi is a junior in IDEA, has served as Parent Council Vice President and is a member of the Black & Gold Gala planning committee. She is Vice President of Human Resources for Inter-Con Security Systems, Inc., which employs more than 30,000 individuals to provide premier security services. “Parent representation on the Board is important because it’s an opportunity for the Board to hear first hand about issues or concerns families have,” Mrs. Bunkheila-Aribi said. “I hope to provide a voice for all parents and work closely with the administration ensuring all our son’s have access to the resources and tools they need to succeed not only in their academic career at Bosco, but also in their lives. I truly hope I can add positive change to help the school grow to the next level of success.” Thank you, Mrs. Bunkheila-Aribi !

From Mars Landing to the Classroom —2002 Tech Alumnus Named MSET Chair Please join the Tech family in welcoming alumnus Paul J. Ramirez (MS '02), our new Chair of Materials Science, Engineering & Technology (MSET). Coming to us from NASA JPL, in 2013 Mr. Ramirez was named Project INSIGHT’s lead Quality Engineer; the mission successfully landed in 2018. He was also in charge of the Metallurgy Lab in the Materials Engineering Thermal and Propulsion, Research and Investigations Group section 353c. In 2016, he began the building and manufacturing of the Mars2020 Perseverance parachute that successfully landed in February 2021. Mr. Ramirez was promoted to Parachutes and Ordnance Systems Subject Matter Expert Scientist at NASA Kennedy Space Center where he worked for NASA’s manned flight Commercial Crew Parachute Program. As of today, he holds two Mars landings, two astronaut landings, and 12 cargo landings. He is currently doing part-time Working on Descent Stage in NASA JPL’s InSight clean room consulting for NASA’s Engineering Safety Center. After graduating from the Tech in 2002, Mr. Ramirez’s service in the U.S. Army elite parachute infantry units and years as a Department of Defense certified Unexploded Ordnance Bomb Tech honed his skills in explosives, abilities that would later be deployed on Mars’ surface. Along the way, he majored in Chinese at Chapman University, with an emphasis in Chinese Strategic culture. He was awarded the school’s Horatio Alger Scholarship Award by former ambassador to Spain, George Argyros, for whom Chapman’s Argyros School of Business and Economics is named. Paul then completed Peking University’s Advanced Chinese Language Immersion Program and attended more advanced Chinese courses at Tsinghua University. Upon returning to the states, he continued his education at UCLA and Cal State, Los Angeles. Through his amazing travels and experiences, what has stayed with Mr. Ramirez from his years at Bosco Tech? “The confidence that comes from having a hands-on experience at such a young age,” he said without hesitation. “From foundry, to welding, to mechanical testing, to corrosion and failure analysis, these skill sets are vital to succeeding in the aerospace industry. Studying advanced theory from a young age was invaluable. For example, freshman year in Materials Science, when you learn and memorize the iron carbide diagram, you have no idea what it is or what it means or why it even matters,” he explains. “But then, years go by, and these seeds that were planted begin to sprout, the dots connect, and then one day you have more than just knowledge. You have an in-depth understanding--very empowering!” Mr. Ramirez has plans for the MSET program that include a series of guest speakers who are noted leaders in their engineering and technology fields and the re-establishment of the Tech’s student chapter of ASM International. He will incorporate high-level protocol into the curriculum. “My plans for MSET are to incorporate mechanical testing of textiles and their applications in space decelerators and survivability engineering,” he said. “And we’ll introduce energetic materials, forensic analysis of ballistics, and understanding of high velocity formed metals.” In addition to their course lessons, what is the underlying message Mr. Ramirez with past Tech Coach Bill Yurak, Mr. Ramirez hopes to convey to students? “Be true to yourself,” he whom he considers one of his greatest Bosco mentors, on the championship game day

Whatever your interests are, no matter how far apart they may seem, choose three of them and master them! Then you’ll realize they’re not that far apart from each other. And maintain good relationships with people. Stay motivated and, as Horace Mann once said, ‘Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity.’” Welcome home, Mr. Ramirez!
Bosco Tech Black & Gold Gala is Nov. 6 —2021 Honorees to be Recognized Bosco Tech will host its annual Black & Gold Gala on Saturday, November 6, at 7 p.m. on the school’s campus. All event proceeds directly benefit students through Bosco Tech’s tuition assistance program. This year’s event will honor Mrs. Elizabeth Allison and Dr. Jorge Calienes for their tremendous contributions to student success. Both longtime past instructors at the school, Mrs. Allison is a published author whose work has appeared in Huffington Post, Scary Mommy and Red Tricycle, while Dr. Calienes is a professor of kinesiology at East Los Angeles College. “This year’s honorees epitomize the high caliber of faculty talent and dedication to students that Bosco Tech has offered through the decades,” said President Memo Gutierrez. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to recognize both Ms. Allison and Coach Calienes at the Gala, where alumni, instructors, donors, and current families come together to celebrate Bosco Tech’s positive and lasting impact on so many lives.” Gala tickets and sponsorship opportunities will soon be detailed on the school’s website or by contacting Mrs. Viki Battaglia, Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events, at vbattaglia@boscotech.edu. We were able to have our Leadership and Band Camp IN PERSON this year! Our Leadership team met the first week of August, cleaning and preparing the band room and instruments for returning and new members. They also were able to plan and prepare for the whole first half of the school year!
