Learning Together….in a New Way Tech Students Go Virtual

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Hello Tech family— The first weeks of any school year can be hectic and stressful for students, families, and faculty, in normal conditions, but far more so this year with our modified learning platform. As we settle into a new school year, I'd like to share a few observations that I hope will encourage you, as they encouraged me:  Campus clubs and organizations like the FRC Robotics team and the band are conducting virtual meetings and practices and are enjoying greatly increased attendance.  I have been peeking into classrooms through doorway windows and observing teachers, with technology sprawled around them, engaging their classes.

And looking like they were having fun!  Staff has informed me that the vast majority of parent calls and concerns have mostly been for routine things. That means that everyone, staff and faculty alike, have accomplished what we set out to do; taking care of our students and their families!  I have received compliments on how we started the school year, and heard appreciation for the school not succumbing to pressure to move faster than we felt was safe.

This has all happened because the Bosco community—families, faculty and staff—have worked together to make the start of the school year smooth and meaningful for our students. Thank you for giving your best and making this happen!

Please know that we are continually monitoring state, county and Archdiocese recommendations for re-opening the campus and will communicate with frequently. In the meantime, we have also placed a lengthy FAQ page on the website to help navigate some of the questions you may have. As I mentioned there, no list can completely address every circumstance, but please remind your sons that we, his Tech family, are always available to address concerns, provide help, and make this period of time as manageable as possible.

August George H. Mayr Foundation — total pledge is $30,000 ($15,000 in August and another $15,000 in February) for tuition assistance Lopker Family Foundation - $300,000 to support the Karl Lopker Endowed Merit Scholarship Fund, established by the Karl Lopker Family Foundation.

Eൺ඀අൾ Sർඈඎඍ Rൾඇඈඏൺඍൾඌ Cൺආඉඎඌ’ Pൺඋൾඇඍ Cඈඎඇർංඅ Rඈඈආ Congratulations to Bosco Tech senior Diego Alvarez (MSET), who recently earned the Eagle Scout ranking. Diego renovated the Tech’s Parent Council room, located behind the 500/500 academic buildings, for his service project. As part of his overall efforts, Diego raised materials funds with help from the Parent Council and a GoFundMe page.

Diego is a member of Troop 476, affiliated with Montebello’s St. Benedict Church. Enrolled in MSET, the honor student is Drum Major of the Tech’s award winning band. In the project, he was assisted by fellow scouts and current Tech students Jeremy Valdivia (MSET ‘21), Aaron Montero (ACE ‘21), Nicholas Quezada (IDEA ‘23), Santiago Alvarez (MSET ‘23), and Elias Loya (MSET ‘22).

The room renovation included:  Cleaning and repairing wood cabinets  Purchasing and assembling two five-tier metal shelves and organizing supplies  Installing new blinds in all windows  Painting the room  Purchasing and assembling a 10-ft oval conference table  Purchasing and labeling storage bins for supplies  Installing weather strips to main door The Parent Council is very grateful to Diego for the like-new workroom. “The Council would like to thank Diego and his awesome team for a fantastic job renovating the room,” said Mrs. Cathy Rivera, Parent Council Liaison. “Diego and his dedicated teammates created a beautiful space to organize and store merchandise, package up items for events and fundraisers, and conduct productive meetings. We are very grateful and appreciate all the time and effort put into the project!”

Diversity Professional, an interactive national publication complemented with strategic offline engagements that focus on business, career and lifestyle, recently ran a story on Bosco Tech students who created more than 1,500 face shields for health care professionals. The students, and their instructors, Brother Tom Mass and Mr. Luis Garza, worked tirelessly last spring to create and deliver the protective personal equipment to hospitals and medical facilities across Los Angeles County.

Welcome to the 2020-21 School year! The DBTI Music Program is ready for another great year! In early August, returning members, as well as new members, were invited to join the 2020-21 Marching Band, our first performance of the school year.

Students safely picked up their instruments on August 3 and 4 and jumped into our first ever “Virtual” Band Camp which began on August 5. The three-day Band Camp was led by our very own band student leaders, who prepared and planned for several weeks to ensure an amazing experience for all.

During the Camp, band students practiced warm-up techniques, marching techniques, and learned several songs that the DBTI Marching band is known to perform at school games and community events. The camp was a huge success and our returning members enjoined bonding and getting to know our newest members. Shout out to all of our new members for joining and taking the first steps to being part of something truly special. The Music Program is always accepting new members throughout the year. Here’s the “411” on our Amazing Music Program How many bands does the Music Program offer? There is a total of five bands to join throughout the school year: Marching Band (Fall), Concert Band (Winter), Symphonic Band (Spring), Jazz Band (Spring) and Graduation Band (May).

Who can join? The DBTI Band is co-ed and welcomes all students from Bosco Tech, Ramona Convent, San Gabriel Mission and Mayfield. No instrument experience is necessary, just the enthusiasm to learn and have fun!

Is there a fee to join? Yes, the current band fee is $500 for the first semester, which includes the cost for professional coaches to participate in weekly practices, and provides two individual private lessons per student, per month (new for 2020-21). Other expenses include the purchase of sheet music, instrument maintenance/ repairs and other miscellaneous band expenses to ensure a successful program for all.

How will the program run during the Covid-19 Pandemic? We understand that the health and safety of all students is of the utmost importance and that is our main priority. We also know that our band members need to have some normalcy in their life, especially when it comes to music and band. Music is an outlet for many students and to most of our members, band is LIFE! Our Music Director, Mr. Daniel Almanza, has come up with a program that can be held virtually until it is safe to return to school. Band members will practice twice a week via Zoom on Mondays and Thursdays and have two virtual private lessons a month with their assigned coach. If permitted, a live practice/performance will take place at the end of each month, while wearing masks and social distancing. Members will also get together once a month for a fun Zoom social event.

Bඈൾංඇ඀ Sඎආආൾඋ Iඇඍൾඋඇ’ඌ Tൾൺආ Wංඇඌ Tඈඉ Aඐൺඋൽ Tech senior Ryan Zettlemoyer completed his Boeing summer internship on an extra high note! He and his internship cohort won first place for best presentation of a solution to a real-world problem. Their winning project, completed while working virtually, was a system to repair satellites using a soft robotic arm, complete with pneumatic actuators. The project even included extensive design and budget details.

The intern team created Satellite Dimidium by conducting daily online research and design work while communicating with Boeing engineers for feedback on their concept. The project’s final phase was an indepth presentation of their plan to internship mentors.

“The best part of the internship, in my opinion, was the people I met and the feeling of teamwork on a problem,” Ryan said. “I am glad to have had an excellent team, working together to use our strengths in different areas to solve the problem. Each of us was good in something and so we combined our strengths to refine our project.”

“Overall, the internship gave me experience in the real life industry for problem solving. To work together and work effectively is a hard skill to develop, but with good teamwork, any problem can be solved, even with no outside help and just the problem to solve.”

Ryan, who is in MSET, plans to continue his studies at the university level next year, majoring in Materials Engineering. Until then, the honor student will continue his involvement in the Tech’s Rocket Club, Robotics, ASM and ASNT programs where he has already earned certifications in ultrasound, radiography, and blueprint reading.

Tൾർඁ Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Rൾඇඈඏൺඍൾ Cൺඍඁඈඅංർ Rൾඍඋൾൺඍ Cൾඇඍൾඋ Kudos to seniors Nathanael DeBerry (ACE ‘21), Giovanni Meyer (MSET ‘21), Keani Moya (IDEA ‘21), Joseph Rivera (IDEA ‘21), Antonio Robles (IDEA ‘21) and Ziqi (Joey) Zhao (ACE ‘21) who traveled into the Angeles National Forest in July to renovate an outdoor competitive arena at the Saint Edward Retreat Center (SERC), formerly Camp Mariastella, in Wrightwood.

The center, a 200+ acre campground is currently being remodeled. The Tech students, accompanied by their instructors, Brother Tom Mass and Mr. Brendan Chua, built a 20x20’ Gaga Pit, an octagonal dodgeball-like arena.

In addition to practicing teamworking skills, the young craftsmen had a practical opportunity to adapt and modify their carefully drawn plans to accommodate the sloped terrain, while learning to use power tools like skills saws, chop saws, and grinders.

“I learned how to work with a group and assign people to do work that they loved, such as designers working with the planning group and builders into the framing of the actual project, but we still all got a taste for new experiences,” said Antonio Robles. “I think that it doesn't just open up your heart to help others, but it also helps you realize that working together is fun!”

The SERC embraces Catholic-centered programming committed to nurturing faith through engaging, inspiring and rewarding activities in a natural setting.
