Celebrating Tech Football, Band & Cheer Seniors

Message from the President Dear Bosco Tech Family— It was with great anticipation that I recently had the opportunity to share with parents, alumni, and donors our Strategic Plan that will carry our school into the next 10-15 years. “Strength and Spirit, the Vision for Bosco Tech,” is the collaborative effort of key stakeholders to both further strengthen and expand our unique and effective program.

For those of you who may have missed the presentation, we soon will be sharing a video, created by talented and respected photographer and Tech alumnus Pablo Aguilar. Until then, let me summarize the carefully considered plans for the Tech’s future. These plans are the amalgamation of those who know the Tech well and those with expertise and insight into the most effective ways for a school like ours to build upon generations of success.

In a nutshell: • Strategic Planning: Why now? Given the challenges faced during the last 15 years, it was clear that we had to make a dynamic change in operations. While Covid-19 was a challenge for all involved, it provided our community with an opportunity to look within, assess strengths and weaknesses, and plan for the next 10-15 years at the Tech. Rather than contract, react and hope for the best, the Tech made the decision to envision a new future for a new world. While many schools stood back, and cut infrastructure, the Tech remained focused on moving forward—bolder and stronger than ever.

• Mission, Vision and Values Updated mission and vision statements clearly state who we are and what we want to be in the future. In refreshing both statements, the committee gathered around the values of the Tech community, namely: - dedicated students of faith - diversity and inclusion - lifelong learning - distinguished service - social responsibility - leadership • Goal One: Expand and enhance the nationally unique Bosco Tech curriculum—ensuring relevance, meaningfulness, and real-world skills and experience—that has been a cornerstone of academic rigor for nearly 70 years.

• Goal Two: Improve and renew the physical facilities plant.

• Goal Three: Strengthen the governance and the organizational capacity in order to better serve the community and establish Bosco Tech as an educational pillar in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

• Goal Four: Reinforce the Tech’s financial position in support of the strategic plan initiatives.

The underlying objective—and driving force—is to continue to enhance the already one-of-a-kind educational experience offered to current and future students, while gaining national recognition as a superior educational institution. We are excited about the many opportunity this presents.

Mr. Tom Hogan Named Tech Admissions Director Bosco Tech welcomes Mr. Thomas Hogan as Director of Admissions. In this position, he will oversee the school’s recruiting and orientation programs for new students, enrollment services, and the admission process.

Mr. Hogan is an administrator and instructor with more than 30 years of experience in high school education, admissions, and retention. Most recently, he served as Upper School Director and Cohort Program Director of Phoenix’ Tesseract School. Previously, he served as Upper School Dean of Students at North Carolina’s Providence Day School and Latin School of Chicago. He is a graduate of Lawrence University, with a bachelor’s degree in Government, and Loyola University, with a master’s degree in Education.

“Please join me in welcoming Mr. Hogan to our team,” said Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “With his vast experience in educational leadership, he will be a tremendous asset to our Admissions team and the Tech’s overall admissions and retention programs.”

“I’m very excited to be joining the Bosco Tech Community,” Mr. Hogan said. “Everyone has expressed a genuine sense of affection and appreciation for being a part of the Tech community. It is clear to me that the administration and faculty are passionate about helping the young men maximize their potential both intellectually and spiritually. It’s my sincere hope to spread the word in the Greater L.A. area about the exceptional quality of education that takes place at Don Bosco Technical Institute.”

Mr. Hogan will be joining a solid team and program helmed by Mr. John Garcia, Tech Admissions Director since 2016. Mr. Garcia will remain a key member of the admissions team, but will also serve as the new Director of Tuition Assistance and Endowments; he will also assist in student retention and intervention support.

The addition of Mr. Hogan to our staff will allow us to continue our growth in capacity and outreach to prospective students and their families. His office will be located at the west end of the admin hallway, next to Principal Jeff Krynen.

Techmen Reunion Weekend is October 8-9!

Bosco Tech is proud to be hosting the first annual Techmen Reunion Weekend—welcoming back Techmen from all years and those celebrating a reunion year. Due to Covid-19, classes which end in “0” were unable to reunion last year, so we’re making up for lost time, too!

• Friday, Oct. 8, 5:30-9 p.m.—All Techmen mixer. $20 includes heavy appetizers and two beverages.

• Saturday, Oct. 9, 6-9 p.m.—On-campus Reunions for classes graduating in 0 and 1 years (for example: 1990 and 1991.) $30 includes dinner and two beverages.

All events will be outdoors and Covid protocols will be followed.

Mr. Samuel Hankins Named Tech Band Director —2020 Indie Music Channel Award Winner to Head Music Program The administration of Bosco Tech is pleased to introduce to our school community our new Music Instructor and Band Director, Mr. Samuel Hankins.

Mr. Hankins has Bachelor's Degrees in both Music Performance and Music Education, and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

A recent transplant to Southern California from Illinois, Mr. Hankins is an accomplished and recorded musician and has collected a long series of awards that reflect his devotion to music and to the education of young people. His numerous honors include Division I ratings, State and National awards and recognitions (Golden Apple Award in 1997) and several awards as an independent artist.

Mr. Hankins was named the Indie Music Channel's (IMC) 2020 Best Male Jazz Artist and Best Instrumental Recording and recently earned six IMC awards. He was recently inducted into the Indie Music Hall of Fame, which honored him for Outstanding Achievement. Having performed with such legends as Aretha Franklin, he has released four CDs, one reaching #1 on jazz radio.

Mr. Hankins has served as both band director for middle and high school music programs and as adjunct professor at South Suburban Community College, where he taught classes in Music Humanities, Music Theory, Jazz Ensemble, and Jazz Combo, and oversaw the recognized SSCC Jazz Ensemble selected to perform at the Midwest Clinic International Music Conference in 2017. He also served as Director of the East Central Illinois Jazz Institute.

Mr. Hankins is looking forward to getting to know our Tech musicians and their families, and being a part of the Bosco Tech Band and ensembles.

“Music education is very import in the development of the student,” he said. “Every student has the ability to explore new things and music is one of them. Thousands of scientific and academic studies have shown that music education improves memory and academic achievement, fosters creativity, heightens mental processing and problem-solving, strengthens hand-eye coordination, builds communication skills, develops teamwork, and ultimately increases engagement in school.”

“I am excited at this opportunity presented to me and feel it's an honor and privilege to be chosen to lead Bosco Tech's music program. I’m looking forward to sharing my ideas and also working with the Bosco Tech faculty.”

What does Mr. Hankins hope to instill in his students? “Firstly, I want them to adopt a positive mental attitude and to never give up on their dreams,” he said. “Secondly, to strive to be the very best in whatever career path they choose; hard work pays off. Thirdly, to always be the best person that they can be; be kind and respectful always.”

Boeing Intern Sean Hudson Wins Top Award Not only did Tech senior Sean Hudson (IDEA) complete an impressive internship at The Boeing Company this summer, his cohort won the aerospace giant’s award for presenting the best real world problem solution.

The award is given annually to the intern group best able to identify a world problem on a higher level that could be solved through various methods of design and collaborative thinking. The winning group of high school students was able to articulate a valid solution to a common problem using advanced design and conceptualization.

Sean’s team focused on creating airplane seats that decrease the weight of planes, lowering fuel costs while maximizing company profits. Additionally, the ergonomically designed seats needed to be safe and comfortable over long flights, something every air traveler can appreciate.

He said he wanted to participate in the internship to gain a better understanding of how it can feel to work as a team member at an aerospace company. Sean, who plans to major in architectural or mechanical engineering, and minor in business, shared the added benefits of the internship opportunity . “I learned how to organize my time wisely while learning to network with others in a business environment,” he said.

“Some of my projects in my technology at Bosco Tech (IDEA) helped me be more prepared about what might be needed to complete the project they presented to us, especially my experience in CAD,” he said.

Sean was one of eight Bosco Tech students completing Boeing internships this year. Congratulations to Sean and his team, and to each of our summer interns who worked at STEM companies and organizations throughout the Los Angeles area this past summer!

Senior Aman Kumar Commended

by National Merit Scholarship Program Bosco Tech senior Aman Kumar has been named a semifinalist in the 67th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Kumar is one of approximately 16,000 students earning the designation who now have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $30 million that will be offered next spring.

The semi-finalists represent less than 1 percent of all high-school seniors in the U.S. According to a press release from the National Merit Scholarship Program, about 95 percent of the semi-finalists will be named as finalists for the scholarship. Of those finalists, about half will win a scholarship.

Aman, who is in Bosco Tech’s Computer Science & Electrical Engineering program, recently completed a summer internship at The Boeing Company. Co-founder of the Tech’s Techmen Tutoring peer program and ASB senior class and National Honor Society president, he recently earned the Harvard Prize Book, an award given by the alumni of Harvard University to top-performing juniors and seniors in nearly 2,000 high schools from around the world.

“We’re incredibly proud of Aman and his achievement,” said Bosco Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “He is representative of the type of student we graduate—hard working, dedicated, and focused on excellence in both their academics and their extracurricular activities.” Congratulations and great job, Aman!

Saturday, 9/11, was Bosco Tech Senior Day football game and we also celebrated our Band seniors; Austin Barrera, Ryder Burgess, Duke Canada, Ethan Csombor, Gustavo Galarza, Alex Ibanez, Elias Loya, Osmara Olguin, and Nicole Torres! Family and friends were in attendance to help cheer on our seniors for their big day!

Bosco Tech Summer Internship Program Underway Bosco Tech’s 2021-2022 internship preparation program has begun. Juniors and their parents met virtually on Sept. 22 to explore the benefits of the internship program and the STEM companies and organizations that offer top-notch work experiences to high school students. Bosco Tech Black & Gold Gala is Nov. 6 —2021 Honorees to be Recognized Bosco Tech will host its annual Black & Gold Gala on Saturday, November 6, at 7 p.m. on the school’s campus. All event proceeds directly benefit students through Bosco Tech’s tuition assistance program.

This year’s event will honor Dr. Jorge Calienes and Mrs. Elizabeth Allison for their tremendous contributions to student success. Both long-time past instructors at the school, Dr. Calienes is a professor of kinesiology at East Los Angeles College and Mrs. Allison is a published author whose work has appeared in Huffington Post, Scary Mommy and Red Tricycle. Dr. Calienes taught and coached at the Tech from 1977 to 1987, while Mrs. Allison taught at the school, while serving in the campus’ Youth Ministry program, from 1988 to 1994 and 2005 to 2014.

“This year’s honorees epitomize the high caliber of faculty talent and dedication to students that Bosco Tech has offered through the decades,” said President Memo Gutierrez. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to recognize both Mrs. Allison and Coach Calienes at the Gala, where alumni, instructors, donors, and current families come together to celebrate Bosco Tech’s positive and lasting impact on so many lives.”

Getting Ready for the 2022-2023 School Year!

Before completing the FACTS Grant & Aid application for the 2022-2023 school year, Incoming Freshmen/Transfer students must have completed an Admissions application and the interview process. You will then have access to Grant & Aid through the FACTS SIS Family Portal to apply for tuition assistance. Returning students’ families are required to have completed their enrollment packet prior to filling out the tuition assistance application and will only be accessible through the FACTS SIS Family Portal.

The Tuition Assistance application window is: October 4, 2021 - December 3, 2021, for incoming Freshmen/Transfer Students December 6, 2021 - January 10, 2022, for all Returning Students.

When Applying for Tuition Assistance: 1. Incoming Freshmen/Transfer students please select Sign In and enter your username and password created at the time of the Admissions Application.

Returning families, please log into your FACTS SIS Family Portal, on the home page select Apply/ Enroll, select Enrollment/Reenrollment, select Open Enrollment, select Start Enrollment Packet, complete and submit. Once your enrollment packet is complete for the 2022-2023 school year, on the home page of the FACT SIS Family Portal select the Financials tab, then select Apply for Grant & Aid. 2. Click on Start Application.

3. Select the appropriate school year 2022-2023.

4. Complete the steps as prompted, upload all required documents, review and submit with a $35.00 online processing fee.

Please note: Don Bosco Technical Institute Grant & Aid Application requires the most recent pay stub for 2021 and the most recent pay stub for 2022. We will also request the 2020 Tax Return, 2020 W-2, and the listed supplemental documents.

Applications for Tuition Assistance must be submitted annually and awards are valid for the year of application only.

Assurance of an award cannot be guaranteed on an annual basis and depends on many factors including available funding and timing of application. We encourage students in need of Tuition Assistance to apply as early as possible. No exceptions are granted to the deadline dates.

Applicants will not be reviewed until all documentation is received and the fee paid. Please note that if your account is past due, your Tuition Assistance Applications may be denied. The Tuition Assistance Program is designed to provide funds to eligible students from institutional and private funding sources.

32nd Annual Bosco Tech Golf Classic —Fun & Fundraising Alumni, parents, and friends of the Tech took to the Rio Hondo Golf Club greens on Sept. 17 for the 32nd Annual Bosco Tech Golf Classic. Homecoming 2021 Hello Techmen and Tigers!

We’re happy to share that it's Homecoming season. After a year of hiatus due to the pandemic and shortened football schedule this past spring, we are at the halfway point of the football season.

Our annual bonfire celebration on Thursday, September 30, is in the evening. The football, cheer, and band programs will be in attendance. The purpose of this event is to bring our community together as one. We are celebrating every student who participates and shares their talents and gifts.

Our homecoming football game is scheduled for Saturday, October 2, at 6:30 p.m., and it's against Rio Hondo Prep. Kickoff is at 12 p.m. We are welcoming all alumni to support our varsity football team. This homecoming game will be on campus.

Mothers’ Luncheon What a beautiful morning! The Tech's Mothers' Mass & Luncheon was a wonderful opportunity for our precious moms to come together, worship, celebrate, and enjoy good food and each other's company! Thank you to our students who helped out, our dads who served the delicious meal, and our photographers, junior Anthony Battaglia and Mr. Bob Zeng, father of senior Clinston Zeng, for these great photos! The day would not be possible without the help of our fantastic Parent Council group and the wonderful group of fathers who assisted us. Special thanks to all who donated towards the event, your donations made it extra special for all who attended. Thanks to all the alumni moms who attended and to our two guest speakers, Ms. Lupe Franco, alumni parent, and Mrs. Eve Fernandez, current/alumni mom who shared their experiences and advice of how to make your son’s years at the Tech the best they can be.

Introducing: 2021-2022 Youth Ministry Core Team We’d like to give a very special shout out to Bosco Tech’s dedicated Youth Ministry Core Team. These young men work under the direction of Mr. Rudy Herrera, Coordinator of Youth Ministry, to set the spiritual tone for the student body and to promote unity and brotherhood across the campus. They are actively involved in all aspects of ministry, worship and community. Each was asked to share their reason for their involvement and their hopes for the year ahead. Thank you, for your leadership, gentlemen!

Carlos Campa (CSEE ‘22) Core Team Captain. I joined Core Team because I had a strong desire to develop my relationship with God and spread His love throughout the school. I find profound joy in serving the Lord through the service of others. I hope to encourage others through the teachings of Don Bosco to reflect on their spiritual life and aid them in their journey in becoming men of faith.

Evan Cheung (‘25) Personally, the Core Team was an opportunity for me to be able to serve God and help others around me. The Core Team appealed to me because of the potential bonds with my fellow classmates; it offered me an opportunity to create new friendships and connect with my peers. During this year, I sincerely hope that in-person learning can continue and that the students at Bosco can enjoy their first year back from long-distance learning.

Ephraim Joseph De La Cruz (CSEE ‘23) During my sophomore year, I did next to nothing to support the school in terms of service. With Core Team, I can do my best to be in service to this school, all whilst being a servant to God. I hope to see a successful start to this program, postpandemic, and that the Core Team is restored to what it was before the quarantine.

Malachi Dharmaratne (IDEA ‘24) I joined Core Team to not only bring faith and religion to my classmates, in a way they can enjoy but also strengthen my own. One of the things I am hoping for this year is to get to know more people and to help others do the same.

Taylor Engquist (MSET ‘22) I joined Core Team to give back to Bosco and help us recuperate from the difficulties which COVID-19 has left us with. I hope to end this year off successfully for Bosco’s recuperation and I hope I will be able to inspire other students to step up and be active in school.

Diego Enriquez (MSET ‘23) I want to be a part of the behind the scenes of our school’s most important events. I also want to be someone to help someone or inspire them relating to their faith. I hope to have a fun time and make new friends with the people I work with, while growing in my own faith through it all.

Owen Frayre (MAT ‘23) I joined the Core Team in order to serve the school and grow in my faith in the process. I believe the Core Team is a giant part of the school and I wanted to be a part of that. I hope to help the school have a more successful most -pandemic school year. I also hope to serve others and touch the hearts of the students through our liturgies and character assemblies.

Jake Garcia (ACE ‘23) I joined to further my relationship with God. To be a part of a group that assists during mass to give back to God after all he’s done for me. I wanted to be able to help during the mass and be a role model for my peers. I hope to be apart of all projects giving a great experience to everyone. This year so far I have been part of the Triduum mass and that was a very fun experience to be apart of. I hope to be part of many more they are truly eye opening.

Michael Garcia (MAT ‘23) I joined Core Team so I could help contribute to the school in a major way. I helped out in the liturgy and reconciliation group, and I'm in the Retreat group currently. I hope this year we can plan some fun and meaningful events to lift the spirits of our community.

Youth Ministry Core Team (continued) Kanoa Gomez (MAT ‘23) I joined Core Team at Bosco Tech in hopes of giving back to the school that has already given so much to me, while strengthening my faith of my belief in God. I hope that throughout this year I can work with my peers in Core Team and create many memorable events for our school, giving back the enjoyable experience I have received.

Miguel Angel Martinez (MSET ‘23) I joined Core Team because I felt like I needed to help out the community. Not only has Core Team helped me mentally, but it has helped me get closer to my peers and be more confident. I love to help our student body get closer to God and get others involved. I hope that our school can reconnect with each other and find inner peace and love. This month's theme was Love, so I hope all of us can love each other and be there as brothers and sisters. I hope that everyone gets to participate in a liturgy and helps out in events that occur in the school.

Isaac Mendoza (ACE ‘22) The reason I joined the Core Team was because it is a leadership role that improves my faith and connection with God. My hope for the core team is to remain together as a family and make the school live up to Bosco’s oratory.

Matthew Phillips (MAT ‘23) God and Bosco Tech are central parts of my life, I wanted to give back to both of them, and Core Team seemed the best way to do so. I hope that as part of Core Team I’ll be able to deliver a positive message through words and actions about God and faith to Bosco Tech. I hope we will work on many creative projects that will engage the school, and I hope I will become closer to God in the process.

Aidan Pico (BMET ‘23) I joined Core Team to help and serve others in our Bosco Tech community. Starting as an altar server I was inspired by my fellow Core Team members to help others deepen their faith in God. Returning back to on-campus learning I hope to make a fun, comfortable, and faithful school year. Through the events formed by Core Team, I hope to serve others and make this year memorable.

Johann Tiangco (MAT ‘23) I joined Core not only to strengthen my faith in God, but to give back to him and to the school through service and to prepare to be a leader and role model for others. Things I hope for this year are to just make a good impact on the school and others. I want to make my high school experience memorable with the right people and that starts with Core Team.

Santiago Vargas (ACE ‘23) I joined the Core Team because I wanted to participate in our school's liturgies and help out since this is a part of my faith. I believe that our schools faith is what holds us together and having the opportunity to participate in it holds a dear place in my heart. What I hope for this year is that we have a lot of successful liturgies and events. I also hope that we are able to touch the hearts of my peers and express God's love to them.

Samuel Zendejas (MSET ‘23) I feel like I can do more for others and this is the perfect opportunity for me. I hope I can improve myself and as I’m doing that I can try to help others.

Cross Country Highlights

Our Bosco Tech Cross Country team currently has 30 athletes on the roster, doubling from the 14 or so summer members. So far, we have participated in four invitational meets: Cool Breeze (September 3) next to the Rose Bowl, Rosemead High School (September 11) at Rosemead, Woodbridge (September 17) at SilverLakes Sports Park in Norco, and Del Rey League (September 22) at Hollydale Regional Park in South Gate.

All except Del Rey were night meets to avoid the heat. Nineteen of our athletes are first-time cross country runners, so they are experiencing their very first races. Our students have already started to have new Personal Records (PRs) with almost every race. We also have already earned some medals: seniors Marcus Chavez and Brenton Dunn have each won a medal, while both junior Anthony Battaglia and freshman Daniel Cendejas have each earned two in their races, and junior Christian Perez has also earned two and is our top runner. Our next meets are Run the Beach (October 2) at El Rancho High in Pico Rivera; Del Rey League Duals (October 12) at Hollydale; MtSAC (October 22); Del Rey League Finals (October 30) at St. Pius X-St. Matthias. We look forward to breaking many more PRs and earning an abundance of medals!
