School Photo / Material & Award Pick-Up Days —We’ve Missed You, Techmen!
Mൾඌඌൺൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Greetings Tech Family— I hope you are well! A sincere thank you for helping our students successfully approach the end of the first quarter of the school year. I’m very grateful and proud of how smoothly our community has embraced the remote learning program---I have received many positive comments from parents sharing that they are appreciative of our faculty’s virtual presence, preparation, and interaction with their sons. As you know, 2020 has presented financial challenges for all organizations, and we are no exception. We will continue to move forward with our mission amidst the storm that COVID-19 has created. This year’s Salesian strenna, “Hope moves us: Behold I make all things new” is fitting as it reinforces our trust in God as we anticipate a bright future for our school and Tech community. The largest impact, aside from enrollment, has been the inability to operate our Saturday Bingo on a consistent basis. This year, we have lost four months of revenue—critical tuition assistance funds. The good news is that we have developed a highly efficient, safe, and profitable “Drive-In Bingo” program that should, over time, help us recoup some of the losses. We hope to resume Bingo operations as soon as possible, and will keep you notified. When it again opens, please share the news with family and friends! On a positive note, we have the opportunity to gain additional funds from our alumni, families, friends, and new Tech supporters. This semester, we will be hosting two fund raising events that were postponed from spring and summer. The Sept. 25 Alumni Golf Tournament sold out early and, as proceeds are being counted, we anticipate that it exceeded our $30,000 goal. This goes completely toward tuition assistance funds. I am touched by the strong outpouring of support it received! Our annual Black & Gold Gala will be a virtual gala on October 17 and we hope to raise $20,000$30,000. This year, we will be honoring alumnus and former administrator Mr. Bob Currie (EL ‘64) and the Edison International corporation. This program event will include entertainment, silent auction, student performances, and testimonies from parents, students and alumni. Please plan to join us virtually, and support the gala, which directly helps students! I’m also pleased to announce that we are starting the Tech’s Strategic Plan process. We will spend the next six months gathering data and focus group input to assist us in the blueprint and roadmap for the Bosco Tech of the 21st century. I’m looking forward to developing and executing this shared vision that will help our mission and next generation of Techmen! Building capacity in development and fundraising has been a key priority during the last two years. While we have increased fundraising and grants, the incremental growth will not sustain the demands of the Tech’s programs, instruction, facilities, and equipment. Sustaining the Tech’s unique educational program will require a seismic shift in fund development, outreach, marketing, and admissions. In August, the Board of Trustees approved the hiring of a development director, and we were fortunate to hire Mr. Phil Consuegra. He’s familiar with Salesian education and brings years of fundraising experience at independent schools. Phil started in September. Please join me in welcoming him to the Tech family! This year, we will present our Annual Report in October. Providing a comprehensive summary of 201920 to our donors is critical to our messaging and sharing of stories to our community. The Annual Report will also help introduce our Annual Appeal, which accounts for approximately $100,000 of tuition assistance funds. I’m excited for the opportunities this year brings, and I plan to provide updates on a regular basis. I look forward to seeing everyone back on campus soon! God Bless you and your family, Memo Gutierrez (AU ‘83)

Fඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ Sept. 17, 2020 Dear Bosco Tech family, I am writing this letter exactly one month after our school year started. Time flies! During this pandemic time, we continue to practice distance learning with creativity and close communication with students and their parents. In this first month, Bosco Tech celebrated our annual Triduum, the traditional three days in which we dedicate the 2020-2021 school year to our loving God. This year, the Strenna 2021 from our Salesian Rector Major, Fr. Ángel Fernández Artime is: “Moved by hope: ‘See, I am making all things new.’” (Revelation 21:5) In his message, Fr. Ángel reminded us of the realities that each one of us faces during these days, in addition to the pandemic. Globally and locally, many people have suffered with constant and silent epidemics such as hunger, thirst, and wars. By being aware and sensitive to this reality, we must change our values and perspectives: —from individualism to solidarity —from isolation to genuine encounter —from division to unity and communion —from pessimism to hope —from emptiness and lack of meaning to transcendence. We can only change what is in our hearts by facing this reality with faith and trust in God who speaks to us. Allow me to use the words of our Rector Major to intercede for us, through the love of our Blessed Mother Mary. “Mary, our Mother, knows well what it means to trust and hope against all hope, trusting in the name of God. Her ‘yes’ to God has awakened all hope for humankind. She experienced helplessness and loneliness at the birth of her Son; she kept in her heart the announcement of a sorrow that would pierce her heart. (Cf. Lk 2:35); she experienced the suffering of seeing her Son be a ‘sign of contradiction,’ misunderstood, rejected. She knew of hostility and rejection directed at her Son until when, at the foot of the cross on Golgotha, she understood that Hope would not die. That is why she stayed with the disciples as a mother. ‘Woman, here is your son?’ (Jn 19:26) – as the Mother of Hope.” God bless you and your family, Fr. Thinh Nguyen, SDB Interim Director

This year, our experience reflected on the worldwide Salesian Family theme of Hope and Renewal. The Tech’s Youth Ministry Core Team created videos, shown online, that helped share this theme with the entire student body. The Theology Department created class reflections to coincide with the theme. Thank you to everyone who contributed, especially the Youth Ministry Core Team. Your hard work is appreciated!

—Uਓਅਓ 3D Pਉਔਉਇ ਆਏ Mਏਅ Cਏਆਏਔਁਂਅ Pਏਔਅਃਔਉਖਅ Cਏਖਅ A very special shout out to ACE senior Ziqi (Joey) Zhao! After discussing the idea with a past elementary school teacher, Joey began creating comfortable face mask straps via 3D printing that are adjustable, fitting anyone, including small children. Now, in the redesign and refinement stage, Joey is up to 130 straps and working on more. His updated design includes a gear logo mid strap, tailored specifically for Bosco Tech. He has donated the popular accessory to Tech instructors, his elementary school, and to an international flight crew who wear masks for extended periods of time. Joey got the original design from 3D printer manufacturer Hewlett Packard, but in his recent modification, he made the small spikes at the back larger for greater grip, and added more attachment notches on each side, allowing a more customizable fit. He has even been asked to print the useful straps in different colors! “Among the most positive feedback I’ve gotten is from Bosco Tech because administrators asked for a second batch!” said Joey. “Generally, almost all the people who received one love the fact it took a lot of pressure off their ears and makes the masks fit better. It also warms my heart that my St. Luke teacher's granddaughter loves it and now wants one in pink, which I believe is the best compliment I can get!” “And I’ve learned a lot more about my 3D printer, which helps with other prototypes and projects I am working on,” he shared. “I appreciate the fact that my teachers love the straps and want more, and if I can help others out in any way shape, or form, I am more than happy to do so!” When not studying or creating the much-sought after straps, the honor student is active in the Tech’s award -winning MWD Solar Cup team, the 5669 FRC Robotics team, the National Honor Society, and the Math and GO club. A student leader on the Design-Build Competition team, he helps out as a teaching assistant in both ACE and in biology classes. This summer, he was part of a six-student Bosco Tech construction crew who volunteered to build a gaga pit game at St. Edward’s Retreat Center in Wrightwood. He also volunteers as a robotics club teaching assistant at St. Luke Catholic School. Joey plans to major in civil engineering after graduating from the Tech. Way to go, Joey!

Tൾർඁ Sൾඇංඈඋ Mൺൾඌ ඍඁൾ Mඈඌඍ ඈൿ Bඈൾංඇ Iඇඍൾඋඇඌඁංඉ “The journey of a lifetime,” that’s how Bosco Tech senior Owen Lin describes his summer internship at The Boeing Company. The energetic and hard-working IDEA student actually took on two distinct roles at Boeing this summer; in addition to his responsibilities as a cohort member that worked on eliminating space junk in the Low-Earth Orbit, he was selected to create the internship program’s 2020 newsletter, a demanding task with tight deadlines! As Newsletter Communications Lead Intern, Owen was responsible for assigning stories, editing, and publishing the newsletter. He also was selected to write a summary of the internship experience for external use. Between meetings and research, Owen attended all the virtual training camps and tech talks that Boeing offers to the interns to enhance their on-the-job experience. In getting so involved, he was able to meet professionals who willingly offered guidance and insights. “The most valuable part of the internship, in my opinion, was the networking opportunities,” said Owen. “The huge networking experience is what, I think, makes this internship special. I took advantage of my time at Boeing and reached out to over 30 employees.” Methodically, Owen first asked Boeing employees about their experiences working at the world’s largest aerospace company. Then, he approached materials science engineers to ask them about their work, noting that each one had a different take on their work. Finally, he approached employees who graduated from colleges the future materials science major is interested in attending. In his limited downtime, the honor student is the founder and captain of the Tech’s Science Olympiad team, and an active member of both the FRC Robotics and Math teams. “I highly recommend future students take on the opportunity to become a Boeing intern,” Owen said. “The student is able to gain experience in working with other passionate engineers, professional mentors, and gain valuable networking skills.” “In addition, he can not only learn about what it is like to work at Boeing, but also open their eyes to their potential career choices. The experience and knowledge that the student will gain is absolutely incredible and cannot be replaced with any academic class or other research experience.” Owen is one of seven Bosco Tech seniors who completed Boeing internships this past summer. Three recent Tech graduates served as internship mentors, a new role created to guide interns in the virtual program. For more information about the diverse and invaluable internship opportunities available to Tech juniors, please contact Mrs. Anne Sigoloff, Manager of Foundation Relations, (asigoloff@boscotech.edu) who moderates the school’s internship program.
