Hello Tech family— As usual, our campus is vibrant and busy, and classes, sports and activities are in full swing. But there seems to be an added element of vitality this fall:  Our summer interns are reporting back the amazing experiences they had on the job. Those in the biotech industry are part of a group of interns who will be honored by the L.A. County Board of Supervisors for their work in this rapidly growing field. One intern who plans on entering the medical field worked at a local hospital and was able to witness actual medical procedures!  The internship preparation program is starting up again. If your junior son is interested, please remind him to attend the upcoming informational meeting on Oct. 2 at lunch.  Our faculty and staff are continuing to prepare for the upcoming Spring 2020 WCEA/WASC visit in which we will renew our accreditation for another six years.  The Tech’s on-going and unique test prep program continues to prepare students to best approach standardized testing and their college entrance exams.  The academic counseling department is advising seniors as they begin filling out college applications and financial aid paperwork. Director of Counseling Ray Chavez is hosting informative workshops every Wednesday afternoon from 4-6 p.m. These helpful sessions, which can be for both parents and students, will continue through November.  Our sports teams and band are practicing hard and performing well!  Homecoming 2019 begins with a dance on Sat., Oct. 12. The following weekend, join us for the Homecoming bonfire on Fri., Oct. 18, at 8:30 p.m.; the big game is Sat., Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. when we will take on Verbum Dei on our camous. It promises to be a memorable time filled with school spirit!  As you will see on page 3, we are proud to announce the appointment of Mr. Martin Hairston (MT ‘86) as the Tech’s new Chairman of the Board. Mr. Hairston brings to the leadership position a wealth of business acumen and a clear understanding of what it takes to bring the Tech to the next level of education in the decade ahead. Martin follows Mr. Bill Marticorena (ME ‘70) who will remain active on the board and to whom we are extremely grateful for his exemplary leadership for the past three years!

Yes, there is much going on everywhere on campus and we are so proud of our students, faculty, staff and volunteers who are making things happen. Please join us in praying for them and supporting their endeavors.

The Bosco Tech community is pleased to announce the appointment of new Chairman of the Board Martin Hairston (ME ‘86). Mr. Hairston has long been an active supporter of his alma mater, having served on the board since 2015. Martin, whose work with the school’s Alumni Association dates back to the 1990s, served as President of the Association and was a Board of Trustees member prior to taking on a leadership position with the Board as Chairman-Elect.

“I very much look forward to working with Martin as Chairman,” said Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “The Tech has been very fortunate in having such exemplary, strong leadership through the years, and Martin fits that mode of wise and forward-thinking Chairmen.”

“Martin’s expertise in management and team leadership and his financial acumen have already been great assets to the board,” he continued.

“I am fully confident that under his leadership, we will continue to accomplish tremendous things for the school and its students, both current and future.”

Mr. Hairston follows Mr. William Marticorena (ME ‘70) who served as Chairman of the Board for three years. Mr. Marticorena remains an active member of the board and will continue to contribute his leadership and legal insights to support Martin and the Tech.

“In this new role, my intention is to continue to build upon the positive momentum that the Board has achieved under Mr. Marticorena’s respected leadership,” Martin said. “And it’s my priority to support the success of the Tech’s new president, Memo Gutierrez, Principal, Jeff Krynen, and their hard-working staff.”

“I am committed to leading the board’s efforts to drive the school’s mission and effectively fulfill the roles of patrons, guardians, and advocates of Don Bosco Technical Institute”, he said.

He cites a particularly inspiring message given by the Tech’s Salesian Director several years back as a defining moment in his commitment to his alma mater. “Fr. Steve Way gave us an impactful homily where we were urged to ask ourselves, ‘If not me, then whom?’ Sitting there, it hit me--if NOT me, then whom? It moved me and brought me back to a feeling of responsibility to be the person I need to be right now. We all need to share in this responsibility.”

According to Martin, the greatest lasting impact the school had on him as a young Metallurgy student was the sense of brotherhood that permeated the campus. “There is a feeling of camaraderie and selflessness that I learned and still witness at Bosco today,” he explains. “That’s one of the reasons I’m involved. People here helped me early on to become the man that I am. It was more than good talk--it was walking the walk. I still see devoted instructors that were here 30 years ago, working with students, and I continue to be very grateful!”

A experienced operations and process improvement professional, Martin has successfully applied his business expertise to both engineering and transactional business settings. After many successful years in the manufacturing and engineering sector directly applying his metallurgical and materials training, Martin has more recently held leadership positions in banking and the film industry.

During his down time, the busy father of six enjoys spending time with his wife exploring outdoor activities in the South Bay, a relatively new neighborhood for the San Gabriel Valley native.

An important reminder to parents and guardians about the school’s attendance policies regarding absences and early dismissals: Absences: Parents/guardians must call the school and leave a message before 9:00 a.m. (626) 940-2002 (Parent/Student handbook, page 24). When your son returns to school, he must have a note signed by a parent or guardian with the reason for the absence and contact number.

Absences will not be excused without a note. Please be aware a note is required even if a parent called to report the absence.

Early Dismissal: When a student needs to leave school early for medical appointments or any other personal business, a written request from the parent/guardian should be submitted to the Attendance Office . This request should be submitted between 7:40- 7:55 a.m. The attendance office will then give the student a pass to leave class at the required time. (See Parent-Student Handbook).

A note from the parent, doctor or dentist will be required the following day to excuse the early dismissal. If there is an emergency that requires you to pick up your son early, please call the school before arriving so we have time to locate your son.

Please keep in mind, picking up your son will be much easier if you let the Attendance Office know in advance. It can be time consuming and difficult to locate a student during the lunch break and it is disruptive to the class to interrupt instruction. The following are approved Senior Privileges for the class of 2019-2020. Please contact Dean of Student Services Carlos Plantillas with any questions (cplantillas@boscotech.edu or (626) 940-2115).

1. Seniors can be dismissed from class 5 minutes before the start of lunch.

2. Seniors are to be the first ones called to go to assemblies, rallies, and liturgies and to be the first ones called to leave assemblies, rallies, and liturgies.

3. Seniors are allowed to expand on the privilege of facial hair with a full, neatly kept beard. Approved for the months of January – April only.

4. Seniors are allowed to have foreign colored hair. Seniors wishing to do this must consult with Mr. Plantillas and have him approve their plan for hair STYLE AND COLOR changes. Approved for the months of January – April only.

5. Seniors are allowed to be in relaxed dress on the last day of every week whether it be a Friday, Thursday, etc. with exceptions to Mass and other uniform required events. This privilege includes athletic clothing.

6. Seniors can wear Converse shoes on any day of the week, even with their uniform, as long as the shoes do not have any kind of writing on them.

7. Seniors are allowed a Senior Ditch Day during the second semester; it is to be determined by the senior class after a number of approved days have been given to them from the administration.

8. Seniors are allowed to weight lift during lunch. Students must have adult supervision at all times in the weight room.

9. Seniors are allowed to submit amendments to the List of Senior Privileges. The administration is always open to considering changes and or amendments.

Bosco Tech is proud to induct the campus’ newest members of the prestigious National Honor Society and National Hispanic Honor Society. On September 7, after a lapse of six years, Bosco Tech Cross Country reestablished its long time tradition of sponsoring an invitational meet at the beginning of the cross country season. This is a good time to have a meet as many schools want to test their new teams and give them experience before their first league meets. Our meet took place at the Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale with 13 schools and 282 runners participating. It is a flat course consisting of grass, dirt, and asphalt around the dam’s lakeside.

It was a good place for us to get experience as one of our league meets will take place there. The races were by grades. Our team did well with 11 athletes winning medals and finishing in the top 15: freshmen Ian Kalvinskas, Christian Perez, and Anthony Battaglia; sophomores Marcus Chavez, Brenton Dunn, and Carlos Campa; juniors Jeremy Valdivia and Andrew Ring; seniors Casey Reynolds, Oscar Cendejas, and Joey Rivas. Especially noteworthy was the sophomore race in which Marcus and Brenton ran together and led the entire distance. At the finish, Marcus, in his very first cross country race, edged out Brenton to win the race! This was quite an accomplishment for both. In addition, seniors Jacob Armas and Timothy Galvan established a new personal record (PR) for the fastest time they have ever run. It was a good experience for all.

A week later, on September 14, we participated in the Eagle Invitational at Lakes Golf Course in El Segundo for the first time. The races were categorized varsity, JV, and frosh-soph. We had four medal winners: Ian (came in #33 out of 216 freshmen and set a new PR by 20 seconds), and three varsity also received medals: Casey, Marcus, and Brenton. Of note, Marcus finished #20 in his first varsity race and his second race ever! Tim again established a new PR 30 seconds faster than his previous race. Sophomore Luis Carbajal and freshman Isaac Prado did well in their first race ever.

We next took part in the Woodbridge Invitational meet at Silverlake Sports Park in Norco on September 20. This evening meet was a huge event, taking place over two days with about 500 schools and thousands of athletes from all over the U.S. attending. Our team needed the experience of running in races with hundreds of participants, and got it. The Bosco Tech athletes all put in great effort and achieved great results.

Almost every one of the 26 athlete who attended the meet set a record of some sort: ten achieved a new PR; an additional eight established a new seasonal record (SR); three students, sophomore Nathan Nieblas, and juniors Aidan Chavez and Joseph Rivera, ran their very first cross country race. Our seven varsity runners ran as a team for the very first time and did very well, finishing four positions behind the #10 ranked team in the state.

Four of them won medals for their race: Marcus, Andrew, Casey, and Joey. Other medal winners were Ian in the freshman race and Oscar in the senior race. We hope our successes will continue when we run our first league meet on Sept. 25!

At the beginning of each academic year, Bosco Tech celebrates its Triduum. Triduum comes from the Latin words tres dies which mean “three days,” and for us that means three days of prayer. For the 2019-2020 school year, those days were Wednesday, September 4 to Friday, September 6.

The first day began with an assembly led by members of the student body. They started with an introductory prayer and a reading from St. Matthew’s gospel with Jesus explaining how one should pray, including the Our Father. They introduced the speaker for the assembly, Brother Tom Mass, S.D.B. It was Brother Tom’s objective to present the Salesian Strenna for 2020.

Each year the Salesian Rector Major publishes what is called a “strenna,” the theme for the entire year.

The Salesian Rector Major every year issues a new one as the theme for all the Salesians and their schools, churches, clubs, and organizations to motivate themselves in doing Christ’s work. The new strenna, as explained by Brother Tom was, “Thy will be done, on earth as is it in heaven “(Matthew 6:10) “Good Christians and upright citizens.” One way that he suggested for us to do God’s will and become good Christians and citizens was to help the poor of the world through mission collections. Several student speakers affirmed the same ideas, as did Youth Ministry Head Rudy Herrera who said that doing Christian service hours was another way for students to perform God’s will.

The rest of the first day and all of the second Triduum day consisted of the theology classes taking turns going to the chapel for a reconciliation service. These services consisted of an opening prayer, a gospel reading, a short video on some aspect of reconciliation, and a homily – all followed by the opportunity for receiving the sacrament of individual reconciliation by either a Salesian priest, or one from a local parish.

The final day of the Triduum was the culmination of the three days of prayer with a student body Mass, presided on by our own Fr. Thinh Nguyen, S.D.B. once again encouraging us to be good Christians and upright citizens.

FIRST PERFORMANCES FOR MARCHING BAND DBTI FOOTBALL HOME GAMES The DBTI Royal Techmen Marching Band has been extremely busy performing in three football games during the first month of school starting. The band performed its first home football game on Friday, August 23, against Bolsa Grande High School, followed by the game against Southland Christian on Friday, September 6. The Band’s latest performance was on Friday, September 13, at the DBTI vs Gabrielino High School game, where the band got the crowd going as the football game went into over time. The band entertained the crowd with songs such as “DBTI Fight Song,” “Tribute to Troy,” “Mighty Bruins,” “Living on a Prayer.”
