NEW EMERGING TECHNOLOGY LABS DEDICATED The Bosco Tech community gathered to dedicate the school’s new emerging technology laboratories and the newly renovated technology corridor at a student body Mass lead by San Gabriel Pastoral Region Bishop David G. O’Connell on Friday, Sept. 8.

The event celebrated the development of labs dedicated to three emerging STEM fields, located along the school’s technology education corridor: the Green and Sustainable Technology, 3D Design Rapid Prototyping, and Robotics Assembly & Competition Center. The construction, development and equipping of the labs were made possible by the generous support of several local foundations.

“The extensive work that we are celebrating today happened because of the generosity of the Fletcher Jones, the Michael J. Connell and the Dan Murphy Foundations,” said Bosco Tech Principal Xavier Jimenez. “We are extremely grateful for their support of the school’s unique curriculum. These new labs will function as central learning hubs for many years to come as students broaden their understanding of engineering in realworld lab environments where two or more disciplines are integrated in up-and-coming career fields.”

In addition to his duties with the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, Bishop O’Connell serves on the Bosco Tech Board of Trustees. He and the other members of the board work tirelessly to ensure that the school’s curriculum meets the needs of students as they enter colleges and universities.

After the dedication, event special guest Sandra Armenta, City of Rosemead Council Member, presented an award of recognition to the school’s administration for its dedication to technology-focused education.

STUDENTS RAISE FUNDS FOR HURRICANE HARVEY VICTIMS “The King will reply, 'Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.' —Matthew 25:40 Thank you for your generosity! The Tech community has raised $2,500 to help victims of Hurricane Harvey. ASB President Anthony Duarte (CSEE '18) presented the donation to Bishop David G. O’Connell when he was on campus for the tech lab and corridor dedication on Sept. 8. The Bishop said that the check would go directly to the Holy Child Association to help those who have lost so much.

WILL COSSO RESTORES ANTIQUE TRAINS W/ SELF-TAUGHT SKILLS What began as an interest in Thomas the Tank Engine at two years old has opened up opportunities for MSET senior Will Cosso that he never imagined. Based on his love of the happy little engine, Will first visited Travel Town with his parents as a preschooler and, when he was old enough, began volunteering there. That was almost eight years ago. Recently, Will was named the park’s Project Manager for the continuing restoration two of the park’s antique locomotives. In the process, he taught himself to operate the Tech’s unused Manufacturing technology equipment to restore no-longer-available train parts.

“Will’s level of initiative and inquisitiveness are amazing,” said MSET Department Chair Jim Curiel. “The fact that he taught himself to properly operate the unused equipment and that he has followed through on complete restoration projects is outstanding. Will has been an invaluable help to Travel Town and this has been tremendous learning opportunity for him.”

The active senior recently completed his Eagle Scout project which was a five-month cosmetic restoration of Travel Town’s Heisler steam locomotive. Additionally, he enjoyed a summer internship at The Boeing Company where he worked in Research and Development. During the internship, Will says, he was able to use the skills he gained at Bosco Tech and Travel Town to design and build a thermal cycling machine for testing satellite parts.

In his limited free time, Will is a member of the Tech’s National Honor Society, along with the two related materials science organizations at Bosco: ASM and ASNT. Not surprisingly, he is a key machinist in IDEA's FRC Robotics team. He also is a Tech Ambassador, an altar server at his church and volunteers at a local food bank. Will hopes to major in Mechanical Engineering at the university level and would like to pursue a profession in Research and Development. “I enjoy this kind of work because it is constantly changing and presenting new and interesting challenges.”

First Performance for a Football Home Game vs. Carnegie High School—Sept. 2, 2017 The DBTI Royal Techmen Marching Band performed its first home football game on Sept. 2, against Carnegie High School. The band began the football game with the National Anthem and continued to entertain the crowd with songs such as “DBTI Fight Song,” “Tribute to Troy,” “Mighty Bruins,” “Turn Me On,” “Super Bass,” and “Single Ladies.”

Upcoming Performances The marching band was invited to perform at the St. Peter’s Italian Church on Sunday, Sept. 17. The band is frequently invited by the church to perform for special masses throughout the year. They will then perform at the annual High School Night on Sept. 27. The next football game that they will perform at will be on Sept. 29, at Schurr High School where our varsity football team will play against Verbum Dei High School.

Section Spotlight—Percussions The percussion section is a critical component of the marching band, providing the timing and the cadences that the other musicians follow. This year's Bosco Tech percussion section is comprised of Section Leader Anthony Reyes and band members Yungjoon Kim, Samuel Rojo, Christiano Jin, Anthony Montes, Rai Torres, Joshua Wall, Jess Rodriguez, Daniel Rojas and Diego Yslas. The percussion coach is Kevin Figueroa, his second year here at DBTI. Cheesecake Fundraiser for the Holidays The Cheesecake Fundraiser is back! The Music Boosters will have its Cheesecake Fundraiser in time for Thanksgiving and Christmas! They make great gifts! Band members will begin distributing flyers soon! SHUHAO LU COMPLETES UNIV. OF CHICAGO SUMMER PROGRAM Kudos to Bosco Tech MSET junior and international student Shuhao Lu who completed the University of Chicago’s prestigious College Pathway Program in Economics this past summer. The three-week introduction offered an inroad into the rigorous discipline for high school students. Consisting of a series of lectures delivered by full-time faculty members, it covered the basics of the field, as well as exploring cutting edge research and economic experimentation.

“The University of Chicago has a rich history in developing modern economic theory, and a whopping 28 professors won the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences,” Shuhao said. “During the summer session, I was lucky enough to have a quick glance at world-level professors' ingenious notions: applying economies to terrorism, setting up economy models for better health care service, getting a real supply -demand curve from Uber's pricing, and providing insights into the 2008 financial crisis.”

“Before I attended the summer session, I thought economists were just ‘insiders’ who utilize profound math skills to model the economy,” he continued. “However, when I listened to professors' lectures, they shocked me with such diverse applications of economic theories. I could never have this experience elsewhere, outside of this amazing university. It was a blessing to have the opportunity in this summer session, and it will help me develop a further interest in the economy.”

An avid watcher of American news, Shuhao studies current trends and discusses them with his father, an entrepreneur in China.

BOSCO TECH TEST PREP PROGRAM UPDATE The administration of Bosco Tech is very proud of its intensive test preparation program, now in its fourth year.

This program is tailored to preparing students of each grade level for the standardized testing demands that will be placed upon them.

Currently, freshmen are working on strengthening their skills in the basics: reading, writing and math. Bosco Tech teachers administer this class to help our ninth graders be better prepared for the PSAT and, later SAT examinations. Our sophomores are working their way through an online practice course developed through a cooperative effort of the College Board and Khan Academy. This program provides hours of practice for the PSAT and the SAT, which research indicates can provide up to a 110 point boost in those test scores. The juniors are wrapping up The Princeton Review SAT preparation course. This program, administered by Princeton Review instructors, is often taken by students in the evening and on weekends at their own expense.

Bosco Tech is proud to provide this service just in time for our eleventh graders to sign up for their college entrance examinations.

The upcoming PSAT for freshman through juniors is Wednesday, October 11, from 8:50 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m.

Students have early dismissal after the examination.

FOOTBALL LOCKER ROOM RENOVATIONS— THANK YOU, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR JONES, JONES’ DAD & TEAM PARENTS Thanks to the hard work and construction skills of Athletic Director Branden Jones, Coach Jones’ father, Rick, and team parents, the Tech football team has a spacious new air-conditioned locker room. The facility, adjacent to the football field, is a former storage room that has been completely revamped to suit the team. ic Previously, the team members raphused changing g & nfo side of campus, carrying facilities onew theiother n eed heavy equipment to the field, and douall Ntheir bling the supervision needs.

The renovation included the installation of air conditioning, sealing a garage door, creating a new entry, and building 70 wooden lockers and benches. Coach Jones’ father, a general contractor, worked closely with him until an injury sidelined him. At that point, football fathers Raymond Barraza and Kenneth Sumner stepped in to worked alongside Jones.

“The parents who helped played an integral role in the project’s completion,” said Coach Jones. “It’s gratifying for us all to be able to give the kids something they deserve. They work so hard and study so hard, and to be able to present to them top notch facilities—it really pays dividends.”

“The kids love it,” he continued. “They were blown away because they knew what the room was before, a blank space full of equipment. It was a true transformation.”

BUY ME SOME PEANUTS AND CRACKER JACK Even though the Dodgers did not win, the Tech cheering crew had a great time when our local boys of summer took on the Colorado Rockies at the Dodger home game on Sept. 9.

Seated in the Coca-Cola Right Field Pavilion, the Tech family had a great time, enjoyed all-they-could-eat food, and raised funds for the school.

REST IN PEACE, DR. DANIEL ROGER BURSCHINGER Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of past Tech trustee Dr. Daniel Roger Burschinger who passed away on Sept. 2, 2017. Throughout his life, Dr. Burschinger earned many awards and recognition for his gracious service to others; he and his friend Robert DeKruif raised funds for the Dr. Daniel Burschinger Materials Science Facility in the Materials Science, Engineering & Technology Building (MSET) on the Tech campus.

Dr. Burschinger’s daughter, Megan Williams, said that he “loved Bosco Tech and what it stood for.”

In lieu of flowers, the family graciously asked that donations to Dr. Burschinger's favorites be considered: Bosco Tech and the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. We are grateful to the Burschinger family for remembering Bosco Tech. Rest in our Lord's eternal peace, Dr. Burschinger!

CROSS COUNTRY OFF TO A GOOD START —BY ASSISTANT CROSS COUNTRY COACH BRAD STOLZ

Bosco Tech’s Cross Country team began its 2017 season with two night race invitational meets and the first of our three regular league meets. The first night meet was at Rosemead High School on September 9.

For our freshmen and also for some of our other new team members, it was their first high school race, and a great learning experience. The races were divided by grades. Our freshmen did especially well with two medal winners: out of 184 runners, Joseph Perez finished 31st and Jeremy Valdivia finished 19th and earned a spot on our varsity team with his time of 18:23, the fourth fastest of any Bosco Tech runner that evening. That was quite an accomplishment for his first high school race! Sophomore Joey Rivas likewise earned a medal for Bosco’s second fastest finish.

Juniors Joseph Cisneros and Nick Hernandez had Bosco’s 3rd and 5th fastest times, while Aaron Dominguez, our #1 runner, won a medal for finishing 19th out of 243 runners with his time of 16:27. Our second night meet was September 15 at Woodbridge Invitational, held at Silver Lakes Sports Park in Norco. This two-day meet is huge: 14,300 runners representing 380 high schools from 12 states. The first races were divided by grades, with the last races of the evening being varsity only. Most of our runners (too many to name) created new, faster personal records (PR) at this meet, some by over two minutes. In the varsity race, freshman Jeremy Valdivia proved he well deserved to be on the varsity team by having the team’s third fastest time. His time of 17:28 also made him our 2nd fastest freshman in the last 6 years. Our #1 runner junior Aaron Dominguez finished in the top 15 of the varsity race with a time of 15:39.

The first of our three regular league meets took place at Hollydale Park in South Gate on September 20. There were only two races: varsity and JV (everyone else). Our JV team did exceptionally well by taking second place by nosing out powerhouse Bishop Amat. Our top three finishers were sophomore Casey Reynolds with a fast time of 18:12, freshman Joseph Perez, an almost as fast 18:20, and sophomore Oscar Cendejas. Unfortunately, our varsity team was plagued by injuries and illness. It was aided by the addition of senior Sidney Herrera and junior Gerrence Gumabao. The varsity just missed 3rd place by seconds. Ten Bosco Tech runners at the meet gained new PRs (up to 2:35 minutes faster).

COLLEGE INFO SESSION FOR SOPH./JUNIOR PARENTS Please Note: Parents of sophomores and juniors should be aware that the Grade 10 and Grade 11 College Information sessions originally scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 19 have been moved to Tuesday, Oct. 17. Both sessions will take place in the library (Counseling Center). The Grade 10 session will occur from 5:45-6:45 p.m. while the Grade 11 session will take place from 7–8 p.m.
