Message from the Principal Dear Bosco Tech Family— As I’m sure you hear from your son on a daily basis, it’s a very busy time on campus! With so much going on, I want to take a brief moment to recognize our students for working so hard in their studies and staying focused. • Our seniors currently are applying to colleges and universities across the country. Under the skillful direction of Ms. Christine Gambill, Director of College Counseling, they are composing well-crafted essays and personal statements, learning about educational options through the many sessions with different colleges, and narrowing down undergraduate courses of study. Please join me in praying for them for wisdom and direction as they undertake this crucial, yet demanding, step toward their future. • In addition to our National Merit Semifinalist Aman Kumar, whom we spotlighted in October’s issue of The Gear, Bosco Tech is incredibly proud of an additional three seniors Angel Patricio, Walter Kennedy, and Alexander Ibanez, who all received Letters of Commendation from the National Merit Scholars Program for their exemplary results. They are among approximately 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Congratulations, gentlemen! • Seventy one percent of the Bosco Tech student body made the honor roll in the first quarter of the 20212022 academic year grading period. Please join me in recognizing these students for their dedication and hard work in their studies! The full list is on pages 6-7 of this issue of The Gear. • Upholding tradition, on Sunday, Nov. 14, we will officially welcome our ninth graders into the Tech family during the Freshman Tie Ceremony and Mass. The festivities begin at 9 a.m. and all are welcome! Immediately following the ceremony, the freshman parents’ Technology Info Session (TIS) #3 will begin at 11:30 a.m. in the individual technologies. In closing, I’d like to invite you to join us on campus for Open House on Sunday, Nov. 14, from 12 noon to 4 p.m., after the tie ceremony and TIS. Although attendance at Open House is mandatory for all students, we hope you and your family will consider spending some time with us, seeing our students in action, in their labs, manning info tables, and providing campus tours to prospective students and their families. If you know a young person who is considering high school options next year or in the near future, please pass along the word. We’d love to show them the difference a Tech education truly makes! And as we look forward to the season of Thankfulness, please know how incredibly grateful I am for each of your families and the unique, God-given gifts that each student brings to our Tech community! Junior Christian Figueroa Starts Tech Support Company When Tech Junior Christian Figueroa (CSEE ’23) and his cousin, Caroline, a Mayfield High School student, cofounded ITeens, a free online tech support service, they intended to help senior citizens navigate their way in an increasingly complex electronic environment. But shortly thereafter, during the pandemic’s distance learning and working from home measures, the two found the organization’s services in high demand across all age groups. “The original plan was for us to present our resource materials to seniors at community centers where we would show computer navigation tutorials,” Christian recalled. “However, we saw this opportunity fading away due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, we pivoted our mission to be a technical assistance service to our whole community. We witnessed the need for effective technological skills in this technologically-transforming society. The pandemic, only exacerbating this realization, motivated us to provide accessible services in a time where accessibility was difficult to find." ITeens offers help sessions, tutorial presentations, educational partnerships, and hosts private events for every age and tech level. Additionally, the group has amassed over 40 instructional videos like "Preparing for Virtual Learning" and "How to Quickly Troubleshoot Tech Issues” on the organization’s website, connecting their growing nationwide community over free monthly Zoom meetings. The ITeens support team now has grown to include 12 volunteers from all over the state, and even a few in West Virginia, and has assisted more individuals than they ever imagined. According to Christian, because of growing demand, they are looking to add more volunteer teens at this time, and the increase in requests for help indicates how extensively the team is filling a void. This past summer, ITeens expanded its services to broadcasting live training events. Since then, they have announced several partnerships with local organizations, such as Monrovia ChangeMakers and iNSPIRE Community Service. In July, the team was recognized by iNSPIRE and the City of Monrovia for their work. “I believe the most rewarding part of this journey is seeing the direct impact that ITeens has had on our community,” Christian said. “It's humbling to realize our services are making a difference in people's lives, and making a clearer path towards a technological future for all. We hope that our variety of interconnected services provides the help that our community is seeking, but we also strive to inspire other teenagers to take action on an issue in their own community." For Christian, helping others through technology dovetails with his personal goals. The Tech’s Key Club and ASB Junior Class Treasurer plans to major in computer science, minor in political science and, ultimately, earn a law degree, to gain government office or practice law related to his technology prowess. He recognizes how he too, has benefitted from the experience. “I learned that, even in the most difficult circumstances, service ultimately brings the community together.” For more information, visit www.iteenstech.org

MSET Students Learn from the Best A recent morning saw Materials Science, Engineering & Technology sophomores who are studying Mechanical Testing of Textiles drop-test their parachutes using drone technology. The students’ instructor is Tech alumnus and MSET Chair Paul Ramirez (Materials Science '02), NASA Subject Matter Expert Scientist, Parachutes and Ordnance Systems. Mr. Ramirez made interplanetary history when the NASA parachutes he worked on allowed the billion dollar Mars InSight Lander and Perseverance Rover to safely land on the Red Planet's surface, the latter employing the world’s strongest parachute.
Welcome Back, Alums—Techmen Reunion Weekend Bosco Tech was proud to host the first annual Techmen Reunion Weekend, welcoming back Techmen from all years and those celebrating a reunion year. Due to Covid-19, classes which end in “0” were unable to reunion last year, so we’re making up for lost time, too! Friday night’s mixer hosted alumni of all class years and Saturday evening’s event focused on those celebrating milestone years ending in 0 and 1. The outdoor events were a great way to welcome back to campus our graduates!

On-Campus Support Available to All Tech Students —Counseling Partners of Los Angeles Because the total wellness of all students is a priority, Bosco Tech collaborates with Counseling Partners of Los Angeles to provide on-campus mental health support and services five days a week. Even though students are resilient, it is important that they know it is always ok to reach out and ask for help, should they need it. Following what has been an extraordinarily challenging time for everyone, the group provides guidance through individual counseling sessions. Parents can communicate directly with CPLA counselors Ms. Jazmin Marquez (jmarquez@boscotech.edu and 626-5026270) and Mr. Sean McDermott (smcdermott@boscotech.edu and 626-406-1944) They are here to help in any way possible, and are available for questions.

Restaurateur Alumnus Spotlighted by Whittier College We're so proud of Tech alumnus Ricardo Díaz (DR '88) who was recently spotlighted by his other alma mater, Whittier College, during Latinx Heritage Month and leading up to the college’s homecoming celebrations. Here’s what the college said: We're continuing Latinx Heritage Month with the man Los Angeles Magazine called "the emperor of East L.A." We know him as Ricardo Díaz '93, a restaurateur growing a food empire—including three amazing locations blocks from campus. In fact, you can join your fellow alumni at the Poet Gardens food hall next month for an exciting new Homecoming experience: https://www.whittier.edu/homecoming. We're honored to partner with Díaz for the Uptown event. Besides Poet Gardens, he also owns two other restaurants in the district: Bizarra Capital and Colonia Publica. In fact, the Los Angeles Times named the latter one of the best 101 restaurants in LA in 2019. Díaz started learning about the restaurant business at the age of nine when his family opened the seafood restaurant chain "El Siete Mares." He worked weekends and during the summer learning the ropes of the grueling business, from going to the fish market with his grandfather at 3 a.m. to learning how to prepare food. He's opened his own an impressive menu of eateries since then, and continues to bring his talents and experiences (including a B.A. in business administration from Whittier) to the L.A. food scene. Bosco Tech Black & Gold Gala is Nov. 6 —2021 Honorees to be Recognized Bosco Tech will host its annual Black & Gold Gala on Saturday, November 6, at 7 p.m. on the school’s campus. All event proceeds directly benefit students through Bosco Tech’s tuition assistance program. This year’s event will honor Dr. Jorge Calienes and Mrs. Elizabeth Allison for their tremendous contributions to student success. Both long-time past instructors at the school, Dr. Calienes is a professor of kinesiology at East Los Angeles College and Mrs. Allison is a published author whose work has appeared in Huffington Post, Scary Mommy and Red Tricycle. Dr. Calienes taught and coached at the Tech from 1977 to 1987, while Mrs. Allison taught at the school, while serving in the campus’ Youth Ministry program, from 1988 to 1994 and 2005 to 2014. “This year’s honorees epitomize the high caliber of faculty talent and dedication to students that Bosco Tech has offered through the decades,” said President Memo Gutierrez. “We are fortunate to have the opportunity to recognize both Mrs. Allison and Coach Calienes at the Gala, where alumni, instructors, donors, and current families come together to celebrate Bosco Tech’s positive and lasting impact on so many lives.” Gala tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available on the school’s website or by contacting Mrs. Viki Battaglia, Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events, at vbattaglia@boscotech.edu. NMSQT Commended Scholars Congratulations to seniors Alexander Ibanez, Angel Patricio, and Walter Kennedy who have been named Commended Students in the 2022 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation, which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2022 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2022 competition by taking the 2020 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) "Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. "These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success." Bosco Tech’s Marching Band was invited to and played at San Gabriel Mission High Schools Homecoming/Powderpuff flag football game. Two of our Tech band members, Mathew Wong (IDEA ‘23) & Ethan Csombor (MAT ‘22) were voted as Underclassman and Senior Homecoming Kings. The Royal Techmen Marching Band closed out Spirit Week with a performance at the Annual Tech Pep Rally, this was Mr. Sam Hankins first official event as the new band director. Later that evening Band lead the march and closed out the Fall Sports Bonfire! With marching band season coming to a close, we are starting to prepare for Winter Concert Band. It’s not too late to join the Tech’s award winning band! Emmy-Winning Tech Alumnus Promoted to Head of Episodic Programming for Motion Picture Effects Company Congratulations to Tech alumnus Al Lopez (DR ‘76) who was recently promoted to Executive Producer of DNEG’s episodic program team. The following was taken from motion picture visual effects and computer animations company DNEG’s website, dneg.com: Al Lopez, Executive Producer for our Episodic team in Montreal, has been promoted to Head of Episodic, Montreal. Bringing over 25 years of experience to the role, Al previously served as VP of Creative Services at Stargate Studios before joining DNEG in 2019, and his résumé includes Emmy and VES Award wins for his work on Nightmares & Dreamscapes: From the Stories of Stephen King ‘Battleground’ in 2007, and credits on shows such as The Walking Dead, Heroes, Narcos, 24, BlacKkKlansman and many others. In his new role, Al will focus on expanding client relationships old and new, while continuing to oversee our Episodic VFX work in Montreal with a focus on production, and will also take on the line management for our dedicated Episodic core and VFX Supervisors in Montreal.

Introducing: 2021-2022 Associated Student Body Officers Kudos to Bosco Tech’s hard-working Associated Student Body executive and class officers who do a great job promoting class pride and developing unity among all students. These young men work under the direction of Mr. Rudy Herrera, Coordinator of Youth Ministry, Thank you, for your leadership, gentlemen! Brenton Dunn (CSEE ’22) ASB Executive President—I joined ASB in order to make a positive impact on the school’s community. This year, I hope ASB will be able to find its rhythm as we come back from the pandemic and bring back events even better than they were before. Bryan Espino-Canche (MSET ‘22) Executive Vice President—I hope to bring about more school spirit given my leadership position and encourage students to be more active and involved in school events and activities. I also hope to be able to offer the younger student body opportunities to interact with other schools, especially our sister schools through dances and other social events. Jaden Wong (MAT ‘22) Executive Treasurer—My goals for ASB are to run many successful events like dances and increase our school spirit. Aidan Pico (BMET ‘23) Executive Public Relations I joined ASB during my sophomore year as the class Public Relations Officer. As of this year, I have been promoted to Executive Public Relations with the goal of representing the brotherhood of Bosco Tech. Since the pandemic has affected us all, I hope to make this a fun and memorable year for everyone. Carlos Campa (CSEE ‘22) ASB Chaplain—ASB Goals: Promote growth in understanding, love, and devotion to God. Minister to the spiritual needs of the ASB council. Aman Kumar (CSEE ‘22) Senior Class President—This is my second year on ASB, but the first year during in-person school! As Senior Class President, one of my most important goals for the 2021-2022 school year is implementing the oratory (i.e. home, school, church, and playground) while leading Bosco Tech in a post-pandemic setting. It’s definitely going to be difficult, but it’s a challenge I’m up for! Taylor Engquist (MSET ‘22) Senior Class Secretary—I hope to give back to the school the experience of Bosco Tech that was given to me. I also set out to achieve a better understanding of the Salesian brotherhood to the lowerclassmen Byrn Balangauan (MSET ‘22) Senior Class Treasurer—I got involved in ASB because I wanted to be part of school affairs and help set up the foundation for the next student government to start up nice things. I hope my year's ASB team will be able to make a lasting impression on the school to be innovative yet practical in its student activities and approaches, and to help the student body realize they can do whatever they want should they put their heart into it. Owen Frayre (MAT ‘23) Junior Class President—My goal this ASB school year is to make the school year enjoyable for all since we have spent a lot of time apart. (continued on next page)

2021-2022 ASB Executive & Class Officers Miguel Angel Martinez (MSET ‘23) Junior Class Vice President—I joined ASB my sophomore year when I was the Class Treasurer. I decided to move roles to make more of an impact in the school. I think that with the chemistry that my fellow classmates have, we can make this year very successful and fun for others. Lorenzo Benitez (MAT ‘23) Junior Class Secretary—For ASB, I want to make sure that these kids have the Bosco experience, basically to pass down the oratory model to them. Mostly, I want to make sure that this year isn’t boring since we’re “post” (but not post) pandemic. Christian Figueroa (CSEE ‘23) Junior Class Treasurer—For ASB, I hope to create an efficient and effective fundraising process for raising money, and increase overall school spirit and the feeling of community through safe events and gatherings. Jad Aribi (IDEA ‘23) Junior Class Public Relations—ASB Goals: 1) Find a way to get all the students together and get their opinions on events in the future. 2) Have an interactive event that the students will enjoy. 3) Have more retreats so we can learn about each other, because long term friendships can lead you to be successful. That's what I want to build on. Peter Cervantes (MAT ‘24) Sophomore Class President—One of my personal goals is to help make school a better place by making sure to listen to every student’s opinion. One of my goals for ASB is to help us create more things for the school that we can do. The other goal I have for ASB is to help us really make everything at school as fun as possible and do something everyone can enjoy. Malachi Dharmaratn (IDEA ‘24) Sophomore Class Treasurer—This is my second year in ASB. My goal for ASB is to raise money through fundraisers and events to let my class have fun. Another one of my goals is to come up with some ideas to help ASB raise money to help improve the environment of the school. Serian Demata (MAT ‘24) Sophomore Class Secretary—I want to become a more responsible and helpful member of ASB.

Alumni Cross Country Run & Team Car Wash —By Assistant Coach Brad Stolz
October 16 was the date for this year’s annual Alumni Race, car wash, and taco sale held at Bosco Tech. The race started off at 8 am at the flag pole in front of school and circled the campus for two miles, ending again at the flag pole. Seventeen cross country alumni attended, as well as the entire current team. Among the runners were Don Gibbs (DR ’69), Omar Valdemar (EL ’88), and J J Dominguez (EL ’12) and brothers Ed and Joseph Izaguirre (CS ’12). The newest alumni to attend were Oscar Cendejas (CSEE ’20), Aaron Montero (ACE ’20), and Jeremy Valdivia (MSET ’20). The top three medal winners of the race were current students junior Christian Perez, with a time of 11:45, senior Marcus Chavez (12:18), and freshman Daniel Cendejas (12:20). The top three alumni medal winners were Jesus Martinez (IDEA ’15) 8th @ 13:23, Oscar Cendejas (CSEE ’20) 10th @ 13:39, and Diego Arias (MS ’15)13th @14:02. Fondness for cross country seems to be inherited, as there were a number of siblings attending: Daniel, Samuel, and Oscar Cendejas, Aaron, Ruben and JJ Dominguez, Ed and Joseph Isaguirre, and Jacob and Carlos Campa. Following the race, the alumni enjoyed Tech camaraderie while they ate homemade tacos from the Track and Field boosters, watched their cars being washed by our current team, and planned to meet again and run faster next year!
Athletics Names Social Media Coordinator A special Bosco Tech welcome to Mr. Nicholas Sale, the Athletic Department’s new Coordinator of Social Media. Mr. Sale will work closely with Athletic Director Vincent Nolasco to promote the school’s sports teams and standings on social media. An avid athlete, Mr. Sale has played football, basketball, and volleyball in the Catholic Youth Organization. After graduating from Damien High School, where he was a three-year letterman in football, he majored in Business Administration at the University of La Verne. Previously, he served as the Athletic Coordinator/ Director at San Marino High School. During his tenure, San Marino won three CIF-SS Team Championships, eighteen league titles in ten sports, and multiples CIF-SS Individual Championships. In addition to program performance, Sale directed day-to-day operations, department branding, and community outreach. Mr. Sale is currently serving in the physical education department at West Covina Unified School District and will now be the Social Media Coordinator of Athletics at Bosco Tech. “I am excited and grateful to be able to serve the student-athletes at Bosco Tech in this new position,” he said. “I am a product of an all-boys Catholic school education and I understand the importance of a Christ-centered education. I also understand the brotherhood that comes with Bosco Tech, having attended an all-boys school. I am lucky to be apart of this institution and I look forward to collaborating with Mr. Nolasco to highlight the amazing achievements of our Tech men.”

Welcome to Our Head Varsity Soccer Coach Bosco Tech Athletics is pleased to welcome Mr. Michael Mojarro as head varsity soccer coach. “A graduate of Salesian High School, earning three time All Dey Rey Selection and earning a collegiate scholarship at DePaul University, Coach Mojarro understands what it is to be a student-athlete at a Salesian School,” said Mr. Vincent Nolasco, Athletic Director. “He started his coaching career last year as the Junior Varsity Head Coach. With his proven leadership and soccer insight as a former division one student-athlete at DePaul University he will use those experiences for our student-athletes. Cross Country Highlights —By Assistant Coach Brad Stolz
With approximately half of the 2021 Cross Country team composed of first time runners, it has taken much of September for them to learn the practicalities of running by participating in their first races. During October, they started showing how very talented they are! On October 2nd, we journeyed to Pico Rivera’s El Rancho High School for their Run the Ranch invitational meet. There, freshman Daniel Cendejas won the fresh/soph race and a medal. Our JV team finished 4th, and our varsity team came in 2nd with medals to juniors Christian Perez (who finish 4th) and Anthony Battaglia, and seniors Brenton Dunn and Marcus Chavez. October 12 saw us in South Gate at Hollydale Regional Park for the Del Rey League Duals. Our JV team took 2nd place, with sophomore Juan Pablo Rodriguez finishing 7th and senior Mateo Nakano taking 8th one second behind him. Our varsity team took 3rd place in the league, headed by Christian’s 2nd place finish. Our last race of the month was the most important one—the Mt. SAC Invitational on October 22. It took place over two days with 12,000 runners participating from 430 high schools from all over California and elsewhere. It’s the world’s largest xc invitational. The course is the toughest in California, and most likely also the most difficult in the entire U.S. It is important for us to learn how to do well there, since that’s where the CIF Southern Section prelims and finals will take place. Our times were good for such a tough race; three of our athletes were under 20 minutes: senior Luis Carbajal, junior Anthony Battaglia, and sophomore Daniel Rodriguez, and two under 18: senior Brenton Dunn and freshman Daniel Cendejas (who medaled with a #3 finish in the freshman race). The fastest time, 16:51.9, was by junior Christian Perez who received a medal for his #8 finish in the varsity race. Great job, gentlemen! Our season ends with the league finals at Hollydale Park.on November 3, and (hopefully) CIF Southern Section prelims and finals November 12 & 20, and state finals in Fresno on November 27.
