Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Hello Tech family— I trust that this message finds you well and that your family is thriving as we fully move in to Fall, embracing the cooler, but shorter days.

I’d like to send special thanks to our great Academic Counseling team who continue to wisely advise and encourage seniors as they complete their college applications and write those important personal statements. A very special thank you to Mr. Ray Chavez who has been hosting weekly workshops for parents and students as they navigate the complexities of FAFSA, the Common App and Personal Interest Questions. I’m confident that our future graduates are well prepared for the demands of the application process, and for college ahead.

Overall, our students did extremely well on first quarter exams and in state testing, as the results will bear witness to. They will have earned the downtime that Thanksgiving break promises. However, with less on their academic schedule, it’s also a good time for students to work ahead and to begin studying for first semester final exams, which are the week of Dec. 16-20.

I want to thank the parents who have come out to greet me so warmly and kindly at the Coffee with the Principal events. It has been a rewarding and informative time for me as I get to know our parents better, sharing anecdotes and suggestions with each other. While these mornings have improved my appreciation for all our families, they have also helped me to better experience our theme this school year, "Accompaniment."

In reflecting on this quickly passing year, I am reminded of how much each of us, and our entire community, has to be thankful for! I’d like to wish you and your loved ones a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Tൾർඁ Iඇඍൾඋඇඌ Hඈඇඈඋൾൽ ൻඒ Cඈඎඇඍඒ Bඈൺඋൽ ඈൿ Sඎඉൾඋඏංඌඈඋඌ Two seniors at Bosco Tech who interned this past summer at the Oak Crest Institute of Science and the Pasadena Biotech Collaborative were honored by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors at an awards breakfast in City Council chambers on October 29.

The Tech’s Ryan Suarez and Henry He’s summer internships were part of the Bio-Flex Pre-Apprentices program, an initiative launched by the Board of Supervisors-backed South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB).

“We’re exceptionally proud of Ryan and Henry, and extremely grateful to the Oak Crest Institute of Science and the Pasadena Biotech Collaborative for their internship opportunities,” said Bosco Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “The foresight of the L.A. County Board of Supervisors in recognizing the rapidly advancing biotech industry is truly encouraging and will undoubtedly benefit our county and its citizens in the coming years.”

LA County Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, who has consistently supported the growth of the bioscience industry, is spearheading the Bio-Flex Initiative that will train hundreds of new workers for the rapidly expanding field.

“My goal in supporting Bio-Flex is to ensure that we partner with industry so that everyone who has a dream and the commitment to enter this bold and dynamic bioscience industry has the opportunity to do so,” said Ridley-Thomas.

Wൾඅർඈආൾ Bൺർ඄ ඍඈ Oඎඋ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ Fඋ. Cඁංඇඁ N඀ඎඒൾඇ, SDB Bosco Tech is very pleased to welcome back to campus Fr. Chinh Nguyen, SDB, who has been named our Salesian Director. Fr. Chinh served as Director at the Tech from 2012 to 2015, prior to pastoring at Saint Dominic Savio parish in Bellflower for the past four years.

As a Catholic community, our shared faith is a vital component of who we are, and guiding young people in their spiritual growth is the underpinning upon which our curriculum is based. The important role of the Salesian Director is to help maintain that focus on the Lord and His plan for the individual and for our school. Fr. Chinh’s presence on campus and his ministry style will be a great blessing to students, faculty, staff, and families.

Fr. Chinh brings a practical approach to spirituality on the campus; as a onetime Vocation Director for the Salesians of the western U.S. province, he understands that all people are called to ministry, not only those in religious communities or parish priests in dioceses or faith communities.

He has served at St. John Bosco, Salesian High School (both in Boyle Heights and in Richmond), at St. Dominic Savio parish, and at Bosco Tech. In working with youth, he has served as Coordinator of Youth Ministry and taught religion. Fr. Chinh completed intensive post-novitiate study and completed a bachelor’s degree in sociology at Seton Hall University in New Jersey and a master’s degree in divinity at Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. His ability to relate to young people and his wise instruction will make him a popular asset to the Tech.

Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ’ඌ Aආൾඋංർൺඇ Rൾൽ Cඋඈඌඌ Cඅඎൻ Sඈඎඇൽඌ ඍඁൾ Aඅൺඋආ ൿඈඋ ඍඁൾ Cඈආආඎඇංඍඒ Bosco Tech's American Red Cross Club members participated in a Sound the Alarm Training and Installation event in the Hermosillo Park area of Norwalk on Oct. 5. After extensive training from American Red Cross representatives, the students canvased neighborhoods and installed free fire alarms in homes that did not already have them, educating families in disaster preparedness. Follow the group on Instagram at dbtirc!

The club also hosted a very successful blood drive on the Tech campus on Oct. 15.

Students, parents, instructors and neighbors contributed a total of 35 pints—a significant contribution!

Nൾඐ Eඇඋඈඅඅආൾඇඍ Rൾ඀ංඌඍඋൺඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ— February 27, 2020, 1–8 p.m. (ONE DAY ONLY) For incoming freshmen and re-enrolling 10th, 11th and 12th grade students, the Tech is implementing a online enrollment process. A link to the online packet will be emailed to your primary email via Google docs.

Please be sure to review the list of required documents and read all terms and agreements to process your son’s enrollment packet for the 2020-2021 school year.

For parents who would like to complete the process at Bosco Tech, we will be holding Enrollment Registration Day on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the library from 1 to 8 p.m. Staff will be available to assist you in the online process.

UC application portals are open to submit November 1. The deadline for submission of the UC application is November 30.



Cal State Universities and several private colleges will close their application dates for FALL 2020 on November 30. Submit your applications early and avoid missing the deadline.



FAFSA - The portal (fafsa.ed.gov) is open and all seniors should try to complete and submit this application by no later than November 15.

Sඎආආൾඋ ‘20 Iඇඍൾඋඇඌඁංඉ Pඋඈ඀උൺආ ංඇ Fඎඅඅ Sඐංඇ඀ More than 50 motivated juniors applied for the internship program this school year and are already making plans for a productive summer in 2020.

The Lunch and Learn training sessions will begin in mid-November. The sessions will cover topics such as resume and cover letter writing, interviewing, personal presence, networking and office etiquette Seniors who interned last summer will be mentoring the junior candidates by sharing tips for success, interviewing, and the internship search process based on their recent experience.

ACE Fංൾඅൽ Tඋංඉ Pඋඈඏංൽൾൽ ൻඒ Aඅඎආඇඎඌ Special thanks to Bosco Tech alumnus Joe Reyes (BT '79), of Reyes Construction, Inc., who took the school's ACE students on a field trip to a current work site, the Atwater Pedestrian and Equestrian Bridge, to witness a stress test. The bridge is the first cable suspension bridge in Los Angeles.

During the field trip, a representative from the City of Los Angeles’ Department of Public Works conducted an inspection of the bridge. The City’s Project Manager doing the inspection turned oout top be Bosco Tech alumnus Brian Kanegawa, P.E. (BT ‘81).

The cross country team has been quite busy the last five weeks, methodically improving their skills and speed at a number of races.

Our first Del Rey League race took place at La Mirada Park on Sept. 25. The terrain there is mostly hilly grass and flat concrete/asphalt. The runners were put into a JV race and a varsity race. Four of our 29 runners ran a new (personal record) PR: freshmen Christian Perez and Issac Prado, and sophomores Luis Carbajal and Ethan Torres (who beat his previous record by 85 seconds). The JV team finished 2nd, and the Varsity team came in 4th.

We next traveled down to Dana Point on September 28 for the Dana Hills HS Invitational. This was a level course on grass, concrete, dirt, and ending in their stadium. The races were by grade level, and six of our athletes won medals for their great efforts: seniors Joey Rivas, Casey Reynolds, and Oscar Cendejas; sophomores Marcus Chavez and Brenton Dunn, and freshman Ian Kalvinskas. Ten runners established a new PR: seniors Oscar Cendejas and Jose Reyes, sophomores Marcus, Luis Carbajal (2 minutes and 54 seconds improvement!), Hector Gardia, Nathan Nieblas, and Isaac Mendoza (faster by 2 minutes & 12 seconds in only his second race!); and freshmen Ian, Anthony Battaglia, and Nicholas Quezada (3 minutes and 19 seconds faster!)

Two weeks later, we attended the Bell Gardens Invitational at Cerritos Park. Again the course was level and on both grass and concrete, and the races were by grade level. This time seven of our athletes won medals: once again seniors Casey and Joey, juniors Andrew Ring and Aidan Chavez, again sophomores Marcus and Brenton and, again, freshman Ian. Marcus finished 14th out of over 200 sophomores. 16 of the 24 team members who participated earned a new PR, and six of those were PRs over a minute faster: seniors Anthony Smith, Jose Reyes, Chris Lynn, and sophomores Isaac Mendoza, Nathan Nieblas, and Mateo Nakano!

This race was the first time in six years that three runners (Joey, Casey and Marcus) ran under 16:30 in a race, and six years since nine have been under 18:00.

Our second league race was the Del Rey League Duals, held Oct. 15 at Santa Fe Dam in Irwindale. That course is grass, concrete, sand/dirt and totally flat. There were no PRs because the course length was uncertain and not sufficiently marked, but the good news is that the JV team finished second in the entire Camino del Rey League, while the Varsity team finished third in the league race, putting us tied for third in the Del Rey League. The league finals on November 6 at La Mirada Park will break the tie to decide whether we will go to the CIF Southern Section Prelims in Riverside November 16. The best of luck to our team!

BAND PERFORMANCES The DBTI Royal Techmen Marching Band continued their busy schedule. The Band performed at the October 4 DBTI vs. Cantwell game.

On October 5, the Band participated in USC Training for Troy where the young musicians were able to practice with the USC Marching band.

Then, on to perform at the 4th Annual Homecoming Rally and Bonfire on October 18, followed by a performance at the Homecoming Varsity Football game on October 19. An upcoming performance will take place on November 1 at the DBTI vs St. Pius-Mathias game where the school will be celebrating Senior Night.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR THE MUSIC PROGRAM The DBTI Music Program turns its focus to the Senior Night and Game on November 1 at the DBTI vs St. Pius-Mathias game. The next major event will be the Annual DBTI Open House held on November 17 and then annual Winter Concert in December, as the DBTI Concert Band and the Music Appreciation Class began rehearsing this month.

The Concert Band is planning to compete at the Annual Heritage Festival in Boston, Massachusetts, in the Spring. We welcome and appreciate your continued support as the band aims to bring home another award. Please support our Cheesecake Fundraiser!

Jൺඉൺඇൾඌൾ Lൺඇ඀ඎൺ඀ൾ Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Fංൾඅൽ Tඋංඉ The Tech's Japanese classes took a field trip to The Japan Foundation and Little Tokyo this week. During the excursion, students and chaperones attended a shamisen (Japanese guitar) concert and learned origami.

Lunch and shopping in Little Tokyo followed. The Japan Foundation, dedicated to promoting international cultural exchange programs, helped sponsor the Tech's Japanese 3 class last year. Special thanks to the Japan Business Association for covering field trip transportation costs and to Mrs. Ritsuko Rowe, our Japanese language instructor, for arranging the fun day!
