Ambassadors Represent the Tech!

Message from the Principal Dear Bosco Tech Family— What an exciting, albeit somewhat hectic, time on campus! As I mentioned during our recent Coffee with the Principal, hosted by the Parent Council, our students have entered the home stretch of the 2021-2022 school year, and they continue to impress me with their unwavering enthusiasm and dedication to their studies, extracurriculars, and the campus community as a whole!

I witnessed that dedication firsthand when I had the privilege of working with ACE seniors at the recent CIEF Design Build Competition (read more about it on page 4 of this issue). The opportunity to apply their lab lessons in such a setting was an invaluable practical experience. And the 90 degree heat didn’t deter these resilient young men!

The entire class of ‘22 is a stellar group. College acceptances and scholarship packages continue to come in for this incredibly bright group of young men, as they make their final decisions about their next steps in their education and their future. They’ve been offered spots at schools like MIT, UCLA, and Pomona College (with a full-ride Questbridge scholarship). I am looking forward to watching these young men pursue great things in the years to come; parents, please keep us posted and encourage your son to stay involved at his alma mater!

We will celebrate the Class of ’22 at graduation on Saturday, June 4, at 5 p.m. with our traditional baccalaureate Mass and commencement ceremonies. I know that the keynote speaker, Dr. Eric Madrid (DR ‘90) will inspire them. When recently asked what he would tell today’s Techmen, the family practice physician who has made several missionary trips overseas said, “Dream big and work hard. No matter what you do in life, if your goal is to serve others and you strive to make the world a better place, you will be successful.”

Turning to our underclassmen, we’ll gather to celebrate their academic successes on Thursday, June 2, at an awards ceremony to recognize their hard work over this past year. And the future graduating class of ‘26, our fall incoming ninth grade class, is assembled and ready to go. They begin the Freshman Summer Program on July 11. We formally welcomed them, as a class, along with their families, on April 30, when they completed the Tech’s academic placement exam. May they thrive in their coming years here and quickly come to understand the unique blessing of our Salesian community.

The years seem to go more quickly these days, but coming out of the challenges of COVID, I feel that every event, every celebration, every coming together within our community is that much sweeter and more appreciated. ACE Competes in Regional Design Build Competition They were tired, they were hot, and they learned a whole lot! Kudos to ACE’s 2022 CIEF (Construction Industry Education Foundation) Design Build team of seniors, who recently competed in the two-day organization’s annual SoCal competition in Costa Mesa.

The CIEF is dedicated to education and career awareness of the construction industry among high school students and annually hosts this strenuous, hands-on contest. Special congratulations to ACE senior Bryan Martinez who was awarded a $500 scholarship by the CIEF!

In-Person Graduation & Baccalaureate is June 4 —Celebrating the Class of ‘22 The Tech community is looking forward to celebrating the graduating class of 2022 at an in-person baccalaureate and commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 4, at 5 p.m.

Rules for strict safe social distancing measures and limited attendance will be adhered to. The event will be livestreamed for extended family and friends to watch. More information concerning parking and protocols will be emailed soon.

Building Your Future—Father-Son Event "Building Your Future," was the theme of the recent Father Son event where our students and their fathers, and the important father figures in their lives, enjoyed a great morning together! Following Mass, everyone enjoyed a delicious breakfast, inspirational words, music by our talented band, fun raffle prizes, and quality time with dads, grandfathers, ninos, uncles and mentors in the lives of our fine young men! Thanks to the Tech's Parent Council and everyone who helped make it a memorable and fun event.

Upcoming League Finals On Track Toward Successful Prelims & Finals —By Head Coach Blaze Fimbres & Assistant Coach Brad Stolz

April has been a very busy, but enjoyable and rewarding month for Bosco Tech’s track and field team.

There have been five meets. During most meets, many have bettered their personal records (PRs). The experience gained during March and the first four meets in April have helped the team advance their knowledge and skills needed in performing their events. These meets are all geared toward reaching League Finals (the fifth meet of April) and doing well enough there in order to advance to CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims on May 7 at Carpinteria and Finals at Moorpark May 18.

On the track, at the Covina Invitational meet on April 2, junior Christian Perez ran the 4th fastest 800 meter (1/2 mile) in the last 15 years at Bosco. In addition, freshman Daniel Cendejas won the 3200 (2 mile) frosh/soph race and finished 5th in the 1600 (1 mile) frosh/soph race at the San Gabriel Valley Championships meet, also in Covina. He ran 4:49.22 which is the best time for a freshman in the last 15 years. At our league prelims, April 13, is freshman Jacob Campa became our frosh/soph league runner up in the 3200.

Bosco Tech had 18 distance runners qualify for league finals across 48 total spots!

On the field, junior Justin Roybal threw the third best discus throw (97 feet, 10 inches) in the last 12 years as a first year thrower.

Remembering Br. John Rasor: May 14 —A Morning to Remember Our Brother, Teacher & Friend On December 23, 2021, the Bosco Tech community lost beloved Tech brother and instructor Br. John Rasor, SDB (ME '62). An influential figure for so many Techmen, Br. Rasor's dedication to the formation of so many alumni is unquestioned.

Because of the timing of the services during the Omicron COVID-19 surge, not all Techmen were able to pay their respects in-person at his funeral in January. As a result, we will gather in the Father Penna Chapel on Saturday, May 14, at 10:30am for a morning of remembrance of our brother, teacher, and friend. Refreshments will follow on the Alumni Patio.

Techmen from all years, as well as faculty, staff, and friends are welcome to join us in the Father Penna Chapel for this service. Bring your best stories as we will have opportunities to share in Br. Rasor's spirit.

Salesian Spirit Games The traditional Spring Salesian Spirit Games was a great day for our students who participated as techs in basketball, football, and volleyball. Congratulations to the ACE team who won the games and to MSET who earned the Spirit Cup! Great job to all our participants, coaches, refs, and cheerleaders for making it such a fun day. The festivities started with Mass, celebrating together our many blessings together.

Making the Most of Lunchtime

Not wasting a moment of their busy days, these dedicated students use their lunch hours to work out in the Yurak Athletic Center weight room.

“It’s a great stress release for many of the young men entrusted to us,” says Mr. Carlos Plantillas, Dean of Student Services, who supervises and pumps iron alongside the students each day. “I see great results produced while training 45 minutes a day. I'm so proud of them for their hard work, determination and commitment to a healthy lifestyle.”

MSET Freshmen Win Professional Association’s Foundry Competition A big Tech shout out to Materials Science, Engineering & Technology (MSET) freshmen Vincent Hernandez and Jacob Rooney who both won awards in this year's American Foundry Society Casting Competition.

Vincent (on the left) won Best in School and Jacob (on the right) won 4th over all.

They're shown with Mr. Bill Gardner, MSET foundry instructor. The AFS awards also came with cash prizes of $100 and $125, respectively.

College Week at the Tech Thanks to our College Counseling department for hosting a terrific College Week, five days of non-stop activities and valuable information for all class years related to the goal of transitioning from high school to college. Students attended informative workshops and live and zoom sessions that featured college admissions representatives and recent Tech graduates currently at Cal Berkeley, UC Riverside and Whittier College.

Congratulations to the winners of our College Week competitions: —Scoir Survey Contest: the following juniors were awarded a week of relaxed dress for completing the survey even before the start of the competition: Justin Roybal Kanoa Gomez Sean Velasco Nicholas Quezada Once the survey contest officially opened, the first three juniors to complete it, also receiving a week of relaxed dress were: Christian Figueroa Andrew Placencia Michael Garcia —Juniors Scoir Profile Completion -- congratulations to CSEE, the first Tech to have all juniors thoughtfully complete their Scoir Profiles. They won lunch/outside food delivery.

—Best Tech Decorations: congratulations again to CSEE who earn a relaxed dress day for decorating their Tech with colleges and universities the seniors have been accepted to!

—Faculty Alma Mater Spirit Decorations: Thanks to our faculty who showed their school spirit with wonderful decorations; thanks to NHS members who judged the decorations. The faculty winners were: 3rd Place: Mr. Magana, CSUN; 2nd Place: Mr. Godinez & Mr. Gaba, LMU Laundry Line; Unanimous First Prize Winner: Mrs. Torres, Cal State Fullerton.

Volleyball Senior Night & Co-Champ Title Coach Damian Reyes recognized our seniors on the Varsity Team’s Senior Night - on April 7. A win in 3 against St. Monica's made it even sweeter.

Following Senior Night, on April 22, the team became co-league champions; for the Tigers, it was a back-to-back Camino Real League Title!

Red Cross Club —By Club Moderator Mrs. Anne Sigoloff

The Tech’s Red Cross Club sponsored two important drives in April -- a care package drive for U.S. troops deployed to Europe and an essential item drive for Ukrainian refugees. Bosco Tech brought in the most items of all high schools from the American Red Cross Arcadia Chapter, donating more than 1,000 items. Thank you, students, and parents for supporting our troops and helping refugees.

The club also hosted a mobile blood drive on April 5, in partnership with Cedars-Sinai Hospital. Many thanks to all the students, parents, grandparents, and friends of Bosco Tech who donated their precious blood during a critical blood shortage. We would also like to recognize and thank our dedicated Bosco Tech Red Cross Club members senior Ian Ranches and freshman John Lugo for helping the Cedars-Sinai team with check in, last minute recruitment, and handing out t-shirts and Baskin Robbins certificates to all of the donors! Well done, gentlemen!
