IDEA Students Design & Create Face Shields for Health Care Workers Using 3D Technology

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech family— When I first learned that our IDEA students had designed and were printing face shields for health care professionals using the technology’s 3D printers and CNC router, I knew we were witnessing the true spirit of Bosco Tech in action. It reminded me of a story I’d heard long ago about St. John Bosco and the students in his first oratory who worked through a 19th century cholera pandemic, helping those who were ill and those worst impacted.

As back then, our own students and teachers have stepped forward to make a positive difference! To date, the IDEA team has made and distributed more than 700 of the student-designed face shields to heath care professionals. Each shield is engraved with a message of gratitude from the students. And as I write this, they are printing more, such is the demand for the protective equipment. Their only limitation is the PLA material needed to print more.

You can read more about all they are doing on page 3 of this issue of The Gear. Please join me in applauding the students and Mr. Luis Garza and Brother Tom Mass for their selfless application of their skills to help others!

In the midst of distance learning, Google Meets, and video lessons and help sessions, what we hope to instill in each young man is evident—a giving heart that follows the Lord’s direction, a clear headed, spiritually mature young man who seeks the positive, or becomes the positive, in challenging situations. And I believe the resilience and flexibility demanded of every student by a new, albeit temporary, learning environment, will stay with these young men throughout their lives.

As we move into the next weeks of distance learning, I encourage you to continue to follow the CDC guidelines to protect yourself and loved ones. Please join me in praying for those who are ill and the family members caring for them. Please join me in praying for the first responders, especially those connected to our Tech community, who are bravely battling the virus to care for others...in the true spirit of St. John Bosco!

During this unprecedented time of ‘safer at home’ measures and distance learning, the College Board has changed how and when Advanced Placement (AP) exams will be administered. If your son is currently taking any AP classes, please make sure they have checked in to the College Board https://apcoronavirusupdates.collegeboard.org/ for new test dates and detailed instructions for taking AP exams and that he has watched the video covering this year’s test administration.

As always, help your sons to be well prepared for these examinations. In addition to encouraging them to study hard and complete their final practices, be sure that they get plenty of sleep the night before each exam, begin the day with a nutritious breakfast, and that they are prepared for whatever specific requirements each exam may have.

IDEA Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Dൾඌං඀ඇ Fൺർൾ Sඁංൾඅൽඌ Students in Bosco Tech’s Integrated Design, Engineering & Art (IDEA) technology program have designed and continue to produce, via the school’s 3D printers and CNC router, face shields for those in the medical fields who are potentially exposed to COVID-19 in their work.

The talented high school students have already created more than 700 shields, based on senior Alejandro Piña’s own design. They are working to quickly produce even more for the local medical community. Each shield is inscribed with a message of gratitude from the school to the doctor or nurse who will wear it.

The shortage of protective face coverings was something IDEA Chairman Luis Garza’s family knows firsthand. Mr. Garza’s sister, Dr. Judy Garza, a local doctor, shared her concern for the shortage and he, in turn, discussed it with his students. The students, who are currently engaged in distance learning, got right to work.

“Our students wanted to do something,” said Mr. Garza. “They have advanced skills for high school students and access to rapid prototype technology. It was a natural fit for them to use what they know to help.

After Alejandro’s design was refined, his classmate, Maverick Henry, printed and cut the shield components on a CNC router. These kids produced something amazing while working safely and practicing social distancing.”

Special thanks to Bosco students Maverick Henry, Anthony Smith, Alejandro Piña, Damon Florez, and Kevyn Gonzales and Yifan Zhang, and Br. Tom Mass, the IDEA instructor who guided the students through the process. Also, many thanks to Mr. Son Nguyen, owner of BNSONS Large Format Printing & Graphics, who donated the essential clear shield, and Mr. Chris Miller, COO of The Paton Group, who has supplied PLA material. With the help of our community, many health care professionals will stay safer in their work!

“At this time, we’re only limited by the amount of PLA, or polylactic acid we have,” said Mr. Garza of the plastic needed to print the protective gear. “We’d like to produce many more face shields and are asking alumni and friends to consider donating or sharing supplies.”

Amidst this difficult time, I am amazed by the resiliency and active response from our community members. Seeing the critical need to supply doctors and nurses with medical equipment, our Tech instructors, Mr. Luis Garza (DE '94) and Br. Tom Mass, SOB, mobilized their Integrated Design, Engineering & Art (IDEA) students to remotely design and manufacture high-quality face shields. Aඅඎආඇඎඌ Jඎൺඇ M. Dංൺඓ (BT ‘82) Tඈ Pඋඈඏංൽൾ Cඅൺඌඌ ඈൿ 2020 Gඋൺൽඎൺඍංඈඇ Kൾඒඇඈඍൾ Aൽൽඋൾඌඌ Juan M. Diaz (BT ’82) founded JMD Engineering in 2001 to provide full-service planning, engineering and management services for transportation and land development projects across Southern California. Incorporated as JMDiaz, Inc. (dba JMD) in 2005, the company has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, expanding to three locations and currently employing 26 people.

JMD’s success and reputation is directly attributable to its high level of expertise, client care and honesty. President and CEO Juan M. Diaz, MBA, PE, emphasizes the company’s Christ-centered focus (with the cross as its logo), servant leadership style and foundational core values of integrity, humility, and service.

These values were exemplified by the Salesians during Juan’s formation at the Tech. He attributes his alma mater with instilling in him a sense of discipline--intrinsic to running a successful business and developing good technical skills— and a strong grasp of the spiritual side of life.

“Bosco Tech formed me to be able to handle the challenges of running a business and dealing with career issues,” he said. “Spiritually, I didn’t know it was happening at the time, but during my years at the Tech, I was touched by God and St. John Bosco’s spirit, ultimately receiving my ‘mission’ to serve youth and founding “Pescadores de Jovenes,” a charismatic youth group, at my home parish of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in East Los Angeles.”

In addition to his ministry and business, Juan has taught Railroad Engineering at Cal Poly, Pomona, his alma mater. The class provided an overview of practical engineering related to the railroad industry. In addition to covering technical principles of the course, Juan sought to inspire each student to focus on character development, following a code of ethics, career path advice—something he appreciates having received at Bosco Tech.

Juan’s son, Jesus, graduated from the Tech’s IDEA technology program in 2018 and is now studying Industrial Engineering at Cal Poly, Pomona. “I looked at Jesus’ growth and realized he was inclined toward a technical career and thought about how Bosco Tech would be perfect for him,” said Juan.

Whether teaching or providing valuable summer internships for Bosco Tech students, Juan’s mission is helping others. “The primary focus is on careers. That’s critical for formation at this stage,” he said. “We want young people to prosper and always remember that God and family are key foundations that will help you in life.” Juan has been sharing this message to young people for decades and now, in interviews on the Eternal Word Television Network (EWTN), a Catholic cable network founded by Mother Angelica. He stresses the importance of evangelization and reaching beyond where everything is possible, even if you lack resources or grow up in a tough neighborhood.

Born and raised in Boyle Heights, orphaned at an early age, and with very limited resources, Juan recognizes God’s caring hand and his mother’s loving sacrifice in everything he achieved. Consequently, he has a special place in his heart for orphans and widows. Striving to help young people who are interested in the field and want to learn, Juan motivates them to believe in what God can do in them and focusing on using their God-given gifts.

Juan plans to speak to the class of 2020 about how, as graduates and followers of Christ, “We are more than conquerors.” (Romans 8:37) These are apt and encouraging words for young people, especially during challenging and uncertain times.

Life is definitely not the norm right now; the world as we all know it has changed. But in times like this, instead of giving in to the fear of uncertainty, the best thing to do is to keep life as normal as possible. That is why Bosco Tech Band Director Daniel Almanza decided to bring back normal to our music program students.

On March 13, life at Bosco Tech changed as we know it. With the COVID-19 pandemic and following directives from Los Angeles County, it was announced that once students returned from Easter break they would begin Distance Learning from home. Distance Learning not only meant that students would not see their teachers and friends each day on campus, but to the Tech Band, it meant much more. No more music, no more hanging out and laughing with their band brothers after school and of course, no more time learning from their coaches and mentors. In fact, all after-school extra-curricular activities were cancelled. Well, not for the DBTI Music Program. That is when Mr. Almanza put a plan into place and took action.

On March 30, the DBTI Band students officially started their first “Virtual” Band Practice from home via Google Meet. Students met by sections with their coaches and practice continued. Music flowed through their homes and it was music to Band parents’ ears. Practices are still taking place on Mondays and Thursday (as they normally do), once academic courses are concluded for the day. Students practice with their (continued on next page)

coaches between 5 and 6 p.m. for approximately 45 minutes to an hour….and yes, the boys LOVE it! It may not be the “normal” as they know it, but it is the best they can do for now and, for now, this will be their new normal until they can return back to school and continue the Bosco Life as we ALL know it!

The Band Boosters and all of the band parents want to thank Mr. Almanza and all of the band coaches for their love, passion and dedication to their students and the DBTI Music Program!

As we all do our best to stay well and keep safe during this unprecedented pandemic crisis, it's a good idea to brush up on basic steps to protect yourself and others. Below is a publication from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

While some refuse to wear some form of mouth covering, the CDC reminds us that the mask is not really meant to protect yourself; it has been documented that even surgical masks won't block the tiny COVID-19 virus. But most masks do catch most of the moisture that is released from your mouth and the virus is riding piggy-back on those small droplets. Our wearing of masks is not for our safety, it is for the well being of others. Tell a friend.
