Bosco Tech Black & Gold Gala—April 6, 2019

MR. GUILLERMO ‘MEMO’ GUTIERREZ NAMED PRESIDENT Bosco Tech’s Board of Trustees announced the appointment of Mr. Memo Gutierrez as President of the school at the annual gala on April 6. In this new capacity, Mr. Gutierrez, who has served as Vice President of Administration and Development, will work closely with the Board to further the school’s mission of providing a premiere STEM education to young men. In addition to serving as Vice President, the 1983 graduate of the school is a long-time Tech instructor and past principal.

“It is my great pleasure to announce Mr. Gutierrez’ appointment as President,” said Mr. William Marticorena, the school’s Chairman of the Board. “His understanding of the effective Salesian educational system, as both a graduate, gifted instructor and skilled administrator, make him uniquely suited to lead the school. He is dedicated, tireless, and deeply committed to the core values of Bosco Tech. The Board approved his appointment enthusiastically and unanimously.”

“I am truly honored by the confidence the Board has shown in me,” said Mr. Gutierrez. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to lead the school. As my alma mater, Bosco Tech has always had a special place in my heart, and I am grateful for the opportunity to work with faculty, staff and the board to deliver the best possible educational experience to our students.”

Mr. Gutierrez has more than 30 years experience in teaching and high school administration. Prior to serving as Vice President, Administration and Development, he served as Vice Principal of Student Affairs at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower. From 1987 to 2004, he taught at Bosco Tech, where he served as principal from 2001 to 2004. He holds a bachelor’s degree in history from UCLA and a master’s degree in education from Stanford University, earning his teaching credential and certification in Catholic school administration at Mount St. Mary’s College.

MR. GABRIEL GONZALEZ AT LA TIMES FESTIVAL OF BOOKS If you were at this year’s L.A. Times Festival of Books, you may have seen Bosco Tech English instructor Gabriel Gonzalez signing books and meeting fans. Mr. Gonzalez, who writes under the pen name A.Z. DR. JERRY WAITE (PH ‘74) —CELEBRATING 50 YEARS IN THE PRINTING INDUSTRY The University of Houston UH Sugar Land recently paid tribute to Professor Jerry Waite (PH ‘74) who is celebrating 50 years in the printing industry. Professor Waite is a Tech alumnus and the school’s long-time Dean of Technologies. The following is an excerpt of a recent UH article. For the full write up, click here.

Professor Jerry Waite, program coordinator of the University of Houston College of Technology Digital Media Program, is celebrating his fiftieth year in the printing industry. It’s a career that started in the photolithography program at Don Bosco Technical High School (Bosco Tech) in Rosemead, California. Traditional letterpress printing was still king, but photolithography (a combination of the technologies of photography and lithography) was quickly becoming dominant.

What was the draw to this profession: “It was 1969, and I was 14 when I first started learning about the printing industry at Bosco Tech. After touring the Photolithography lab, with my parents, I knew I had found a home. Within two years, I was so captivated by the industry the program represented, as well as the teachers who taught me, that I simply HAD to become a teacher of photolithography. So, upon graduation, I started working for Bosco Tech as a lab assistant while I was going to California State University--Los Angeles to earn my teaching degree and credential. Years later, when I became the department chair, we rebranded the program ‘Graphic Communications Technology’ to coincide with the rest of the printing industry. After I left Los Angeles to come to Houston, the program was rebranded again as ‘Media Arts and Technology.’”

What is your advice to students hoping to pursue careers in the industry: “I advise print and packaging students that they are going into an industry that is not dead, but reincarnated from the cheapest method of communication in the 1980s-1990s to one of exceptional opportunity. Personalization and targeted marketing have combined to increase effectiveness of printed marketing pieces. As a result, the beauty, features and cost of printed products have increased, as have profit margins. We also talk about the environmental impact of paper and that is it not terrible like they’ve been taught.

Growing trees sequesters carbon dioxide from the air. Cutting trees down to make lumber and paper—and replacing them with new seedlings—actually decreases climate change because the carbon in the paper remains sequestered while the growing seedlings absorb it.”

What is next for the industry: “The biggest challenge will be its aging workforce. (continued on next page)

JERRY WAITE (CONTINUED) The combination of increased productivity and automation, along with the decrease in educational institutions that provide education in print, has resulted in fewer hires for the last few decades. Employees stayed in their positions, but automation made them more productive. Fewer young people were hired. The average age of a printing employee is early to mid-60s. These employees will retire soon and will have to be replaced.”

The biggest victory will be for printing companies to become Transmedia Marketing™ providers. Email, texting, social media, mobile apps, websites--these all are cheap ways to get a message out to both the masses and to targeted individuals. Combining data that can be gleaned from these electronic media, along with effective data analysis, can lead to the creation of a mailing list of people who can be sent stunningly beautiful and tactile printed objects that can often be the catalyst for a conversion (purchase). To me, victory will be in the hands of those who can strategically use all the media in a transmedia way.”

TECH SENIOR HONORED BY ARCHDIOCESE & EARNS FULL RIDE TO JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY In March, Bosco Tech and MSET senior Alex Andrew Cepeda was awarded the Christian Service Medal by the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Alex was recognized for his exemplary service to the school and to our community.

“I've always felt that I could give back to this world and make a difference by working for those in it,” he says. “Helping others has always been my driving force for the work I do and the career I want to pursue. My Christian Service work has given me the opportunity to expand on that mindset tremendously.”

Alex’s commitment to bettering his community far exceeds the school’s Christian Service requirement. He is the creator of the campus’ popular Techmen Tutoring that helps fellow students who need a little extra instruction.

Additionally, he has volunteered at three local hospitals as a translator, a neurosurgery patient care giver and a patient care ambassador. Because he plans to pursue a career as a pediatric surgeon, Alex says, he has invested his time in the healthcare community, helping patients on their journey to a healthier life.

Alex is a member of the National Honor Society, the Tech’s Ambassador program, the symphonic and jazz bands, the school’s chapter of the ASM International, and he played on the school’s basketball team.

“Bosco Tech has instilled in me the mindset of working for others and loving what you do,” he explains.

“Coming into this school, I thought I wanted to be an engineer and make a suitable living for myself, but as the years went on, I came to realize that the teachers were here not over a suitable lifestyle, but because of love for what they do and a passion for the field they teach in, especially the technology instructors. I adopted the idea that I will never work a day in my life if I truly love what I do, and for me, that was helping others through medicine. Our world experiences so much poverty and downfall already that we can be much better off with more ‘helping hands,’ and I want to be one for others.”

This fall will find Alex studying cell, molecular, and microbiology at Johns Hopkins University where he has been offered a full-ride scholarship. We know that we will hear more about this young man’s success in the future!

FRESHMEN SWEEP AWARDS AGAINST COLLEGE STUDENTS Congratulations to our MSET freshmen! On April 11, the Southern California Chapter of the American Foundry Society held its annual casting competition, with entries coming from Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and Bosco Tech. Each student cast an aluminum trivet for judging by a panel of industry experts. Despite competing against much more experienced college students, Bosco Tech won the following awards: Best in School: Harry Lieu 1st Place: Marcus Chavez 2nd Place: Alexis Alvarez 3rd Place: Kevin Valdivia With the assistance of teacher Mr. Bill Gardner, MSET incorporates casting as part of a curriculum that integrates materials, applications, processing, and performance.

BOSCO TECH PARTICIPATES IN LACSEF SCIENCE FAIR —BY MS. CHARLENE DOBASHI, INSTRUCTIONAL AREA DEAN—MATH, SCIENCE & HEALTH

On March 29, Bosco Tech sent two students to the 69th Annual Los Angeles County Science & Engineering Fair (LACSEF) which was held at the Pasadena Convention Center. Students from private and public schools from all over Los Angeles County came to present their experiments and findings, in several fields of science.

This year, Bosco Tech was represented by freshman Aman Kumar and sophomore Nathan Morales.

Nathan presented his Science Fair Project, "A-Salt & Battery," which examined the effects of ion concentrations on conductivity and was entered into the Chemistry division of the Science Fair. Aman presented his project, "Feasting On Yeast," which focused on microbial fuel cells in the ecology division of the contest.

Aman's project won the Honorable Mention award in his division. Bosco Tech is proud of both of our boys for doing well in this competition and look forward to sending more award-winning projects in the future!

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER ADRIANA WALL

2019 DBTI Black & Gold Gala The Royal Techmen Marching Band performed at the 2019 DBTI Black and Gold Gala held on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Their stirring performance was a hit!

2019 Heritage Festival Congratulations to the DBTI Symphonic Band for a complete sweep of Gold at the 2019 Heritage Festival Competition in Nashville, Tennessee. All ensembles—Symphonic, Senior Symphonic and Percussion Ensemble—brought home the gold to Bosco! The band performed for Symphonic Band: “Covington Square” by James Swearingen; Senior Chamber Ensemble: “Academic Festival Overture” by Johannes Brahms; Percussion Ensemble: “Scuttlebutt” by Jim Casella during the competition at the Brentwood High School Performing Arts Center, competing against multiple ensembles from across the nation and Canada. Good job, Techmen! As always, you make us proud! See the full performances at https://www.facebook.com/ dbtimusic/videos/2336265626610486/ While in Nashville, the band took a ghost tour and visited and toured Vanderbilt College, Music Row, Nashville Musician’s Hall of Fame, the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Grand Ole Opry. The Heritage award ceremony was held at the Wild Horse Saloon where the band and parents enjoyed dinner and dancing. All in all, a very successful trip for the band. None of this would have been possible without the support of the Bosco Tech family. Thank you for your continued support!

Jazz Night Out The band then turned its focus to the “Jazz Night Out” Concert on April 26 in Tech Hall. It was a fun-filled night with amazing music of Motown like the Temptations, the Jackson 5, “The Queen of Soul” Aretha Franklin, the Supremes, the Miracles and many more. Spring Concert The DBTI Concert band and the Music Appreciation Class will be performing at the annual Spring Concert on Friday, May 17. More information about the Spring Concert will become available in the coming weeks.

SENIOR EARNS EAGLE SCOUT WHILE HELPING KEEP CAMPUS INFORMED When ACE senior Cuba Garcia noticed that the area on the main walkway near the Tech’s academic buildings is a high-traffic spot, he realized it would be a great location for information to effectively be displayed, keeping students, staff and parents informed. Wanting to use his construction and design knowledge and skill to create an informational Student Activity bulletin board, the idea became the logical basis for Cuba’s Eagle Scout project.

Cuba, a proud member of Montebello's Troop 375, says that he was helped by Assistant Principal Jeff Krynen, Cuba’s troop leaders and friends, and his parents. The biggest challenge in constructing the structure, he says, was the assembling of the sloped roof. He found that keeping it level and balanced in place while attaching to posts was difficult.

His favorite part of the project was seeing everyone’s reaction to the new signage. “On the first day of school, I noticed it was already being used and had announcements,” he proudly relates.

While Cuba has already earned the prestigious Eagle ranking, his official ceremony is scheduled for June 21. Congratulations and thank you, Cuba!

NHHS IN ACTION Last month, we told you about the Tech’s National Honor Society members who volunteered at the LA Big 5K Run at Dodger Stadium on March 7. Members of our esteemed National Hispanic Honor Society (NHHS) also volunteered at the same event; many of our students are in both clubs, but we want to recognize these students individually and thank them for their contribution.

TRACK & FIELD ATHLETES CONTINUE TO IMPROVE —BY HEAD COACH STANFORD TUCKER & ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ

Our track and field athletes have been quite busy at our latest meets, setting new personal records (PRs) and qualifying for the league finals. The JV team, both sprinters and throwers did very well. In the 100 meter sprint, sophomores Andres Villegas (PR), Sergio Hinojos, and Adrian Lopez (PR), as well as junior Ryan Suarez (PR) qualified for the finals.

In the 200 meter sprint, Andres (PR), Sergio, and Adrian (PR) again qualified.

Andres tripled by also qualifying with a PR for the 400 meter race. The JV throwers had excellent results in their finals: In the shot put, sophomores Aaron Reyes had a new PR; Patrick Vicuna finished third in the league with a new PR of 31.25 feet, and Ryan Zettlemoyer took league first place with his PR throw of 33 feet. In the discus, Aaron took league second place with a toss of 65.8 feet, and Ryan earned another league first place by throwing 68.7 feet! Congratulations to these ribbon winners!

Our varsity athletes were not to be outdone. In their last regular league meet, sophomore Andrew Lucero and senior Gabriel Gonzalez PRed in both the discus and the shot put. The following runners PRed and qualified for the finals: hurdlers sophomore Gary Corado and senior Alvaro Chavez; distance runner junior Oscar Cendejas had a triple qualification and PRs in the 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races, but the athlete with the most qualifications and PRs was freshman Brenton Dunn In the 400, 800, 1600, and 3200 meter races!

At the league finals on April 17, at St. Paul High School, many ribbons were won. Our JV sprinters did very well: in the 100 meter sprint, Adrian took third and Sergio second; Sergio went on to win the 200 and Andres won the 400. Our 4 x 1 relay team of Sergio, Andres, Adrian, and Ryan took second place. In the varsity hurdles, we did exceptionally well: Alvaro took second in the 110 and 300, while Gary won the 110, the league championship, a CIF patch and a trip to the CIF Southern Section prelims at Carpinteria High School on May 4. Congratulations to all our team for their hard work and many successes!

JUNIOR CLASS RETREAT —BY ASSISTANT YOUTH MINISTER BRAD STOLZ

In March , Bosco Tech’s junior class took a day off from classrooms and labs to relax, bond, and especially to pray during their annual retreat. Most of the retreat was held at St. Joseph’s Retreat Center next door to Bosco Tech, although it started off in the Tech chapel with an introductory talk by Mr. Rudy Herrera (Mr. H), the Director of Youth Ministry and leader of the retreat team.

Relaxing and bonding next took place at St. Joseph with an icebreaker, led by members of Youth Ministry’s core team. The purpose of this activity was to start the students thinking about the overall theme of the day’s retreat: leadership. The three sessions that followed were led by three faculty members: Session one, “Maturity,” was led by Mr. Gabriel Gonzalez who demonstrated how a student can make a huge impact on his peers through displays of maturity.

Session two, “Choices/Commitment,” given by Mr. Paul Stroup, showed that life is filled with important choices. Commitment is needed by a student to become a good leader who makes important and wise choices.

The third Session was the Town Hall meeting conducted by Mr. H. whereby the future leaders of our school could start to demonstrate their leadership by bringing up problems and questions to help make the Bosco Tech experience even better. The “Home, School, Church, and Playground” oratory model was used as a guide.

This special day culminated in St. Joseph’s chapel with a Mass and homily given very thoughtfully by our own Fr. Harold Danielson, SDB. At the end, there was general agreement that this day away from it all was a day well spent by those students who will be Bosco’s new leaders in a couple of months.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT EXAM SCHEDULE Our junior and senior students will be culminating their studies in Advanced Placement (AP) courses when they take their College Board examinations in May. These exams are very important as they determine whether a student may receive college credit for these courses at the university level.

Parents: please help your sons to be well prepared for these examinations. In addition to encouraging them to study hard and complete their final practices, be sure that they get plenty of sleep the night before each exam, begin the day with a nutritious breakfast, and come to class prepared for whatever specific requirements each exam may have.

SENIORS NOMINATED FOR TECHNOLOGY AWARD Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.

This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. The award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.

SUMMER SCHOOL FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Bosco Tech will offer academic enrichment and review courses, as well as sports camps, to boys and girls in the sixth to twelfth grade.

Six-week high school courses begin on Monday, June 17, while fiveweek middle school courses begin on Monday, June 24.

High school students can earn a full year’s course credit over the summer by successfully completing accelerated classes in Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover academic credit can choose from a wide range of offerings. Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design, Beginning Guitar and Drawing/Illustration classes.

Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Robotics and Study Skills. Students can also participate in a hands-on laboratory science workshop, or attend a drama and performance workshop. Additionally, the Bosco Tech Summer Scholars program offers boys entering grades 7 and 8 a sampling of the high school’s unique project-based STEM curriculum. Tech Scholar candidates must have a grade point average at or above 3.0.

Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis, will be held on Thursday, June 13, in the school library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices vary by class level and number of classes selected. IMPORTANT: SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS As part of a college preparatory curriculum, the Bosco Tech faculty believes students need to keep their minds active and engaged during the summer months through reading. The relaxed atmosphere of summer is a perfect time for students to pace themselves and enjoy the reading assignments with more flexible deadlines. This helps to build habits that support our goal of all Bosco Tech graduates becoming life-long learners.

All juniors and seniors have required summer reading in both English and social sciences; sophomores have required summer reading in English only. Seniors taking either AP Human Geography or AP Comparative Government and Politics also have summer reading, as do students entering the second year of Bilingual Spanish or taking AP Spanish Language and Culture. Typically, the assigned readings require students to select a piece of work or purchase a specified book, complete the reading, and either complete and submit a short assignment via email to the instructor or be ready for a relevant assignment when the new school year begins.

Students will be given reading lists just prior to the end of the school year. At that time, parents can go to the homepage of the school’s website (www.boscotech.edu) for a link to view the complete reading lists and follow-up assignment instructions. ISBN numbers are listed on the site so that students can purchase the same edition of the book; be sure the ISBN number matches. Books can be purchased at book stores or online.

The Bosco Tech faculty appreciates the crucial role parents play in their son’s education and your support of these summer assignments reminds our young people of the importance of reading throughout the year.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—2019 GRADUATION VIDEO A DVD of the Class of 2019’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available. The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas.

This is an opportunity for you to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many individuals who have played an important part in his life over the last four years.

At graduation on June 1, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video prior to the day, parents are invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire Class of 2019.
