2017-2018 BOSCO TECH ASSOCIATED STUDENT BODY

ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT ALEX ESTRADA (EL ‘93) —ORTHOPEDIC & SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPIST, ST. JUDE MEDICAL CENTER The care he received during a brief hospital stay in his sophomore year while at Bosco Tech inspired Alex Estrada (EL ’93). He left the hospital well, grateful, and desiring to pass that excellent care on to others.

Today, Alex is a physical therapist, specializing in outpatient orthopedics and sports physical therapy at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton.

St. Jude’s is considered one of Southern California’s most respected and technologically advanced hospitals.

After graduating from the Tech, Alex earned a bachelor’s of science degree in Applied Health and a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Azusa Pacific University. U.S. News & World Report ranks Azusa Pacific among the country’s best graduate physical therapy programs.

Alex is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA); earned a Clinical Instructor Credential through APTA, and has completed a year-long Orthopedic Physical Therapy Seminar series. In addition, he has undertaken numerous continuing education courses in a variety of orthopedic, musculoskeletal, and neurologic topics.

“Overall, the profession takes my interests in science, medicine, sports, and exercise and ties it together uniquely with my passion for serving people,” Alex explains. “I really enjoy partnering with each patient in order to help them strive towards achieving their functional goals to improve their physical well being and overall quality of life.”

“Through the years, several things about Bosco Tech that have stayed with me and helped me, include the development of discipline and good study habits needed to complete the undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and ongoing continuing education required for my chosen career,” Alex says. “Above all, Bosco Tech blessed me with some of my best friendships that have continued and remain to the present day.”

Alex and his wife, Tracy, live in Upland with their two children, Hayley (10) and Nathan (6). In his free time, Alex enjoys playing basketball, bike riding, listening to music, playing board games with his kids, and watching almost any sporting event.

To current Tech students, Alex offers this sage advice, “Find the right balance in taking advantage of the strong academic foundations afforded to you by the Tech while simultaneously exploring your extracurricular interests and fostering lasting friendships.”

SUMMER SCHOOL FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Bosco Tech will offer academic enrichment and review courses, as well as sports camps, to boys and girls in the sixth to twelfth grade.

Six-week high school courses begin on Monday, June 18, while fiveweek middle school courses begin on Monday, June 25.

High school students can earn a full year’s course credit over the summer by successfully completing accelerated classes in Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover academic credit can choose from a wide range of offerings. Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design, Beginning Guitar and Drawing/Illustration classes.

Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Fun with Electronics & Computers or in building and programming their own robot in the Robotics class. Students can also participate in a hands-on laboratory science workshop, or attend cheerleading camp. Additionally, the Bosco Tech Summer Scholars program offers boys entering grades 7 and 8 a sampling of the high school’s unique project-based STEM curriculum. Tech Scholar candidates must have a grade point average at or above 3.0.

The deadline for summer school pre-registration is June 8. Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis, will be conducted on Thursday, June 14, in the school library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices vary by class level and number of classes selected. ACE SENIOR AMONG FOUR CAMPUS LEADERS NATIONWIDE CHOSEN FOR OVERSEAS MINISTRY TRIP We are proud to share that ACE senior Grayson Wade is one of four campus leaders chosen nationwide to participate in a Samaritan's Purse: Operation Christmas Child Student Vision Trip this summer to Cebu in the Philippines.

During the week-long trip, Grayson will participate in shoebox distributions and will also witness the impact Samaritans Purse: Operation Christmas Child has had by visiting villages that have received shoebox gift distributions in past years.

Last year alone, over 11 million shoeboxes reached children all over the world through the Operation Christmas Child ministry, with the goal of helping children learn about Jesus, resulting in 70% of the children choosing to follow the Lord!

FRC ROBOTICS TEAM COMPETES IN REGIONAL QUARTER FINALS Bosco Tech’s FRC Robotics team, led by IDEA’s Mr. Luis Garza and Mr. Rory Mulcahey, qualified to compete in the quarter finals in the Ventura Regional competition. The team worked well together and performed admirably.

Tech team member Aaron Sarmiento was selected to sing the national anthem at the start of the competition.

Parents: please help your sons to be well prepared for these examinations. In addition to encouraging them to study hard and complete their final practices, be sure that they get plenty of sleep the night before each exam, begin the day with a nutritious breakfast, and come to class prepared for whatever requirements each exam may have.

BOSCO TECH SENIORS NOMINATED FOR TECHNOLOGY AWARD Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.

This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. This award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.

A TRIP EAST IN SUPPORT OF ALUMNUS KYLE CHIANG —BY COORDINATOR OF YOUTH MINISTRY AND TECH ALUMMNUS RUDY HERRERA (AU ‘90)

When Bosco Tech graduate Kyle Chiang (ACE ‘16), a Midshipman Third Class at the U.S. Naval Academy, was baptized, confirmed and received his first communion in Annapolis’ historic Naval Academy chapel during the Easter Vigil, he was surrounded by friends and family. Although his biological family was unable to make the trip, three generations of Kyle’s Bosco ‘brothers,’ along with a group of naval and civilian friends were in attendance.

As a Tech student, Kyle was laser-focused on his application and acceptance into the Academy. While his educational journey was unfolding, a journey of faith begun years earlier was reaching its completion. A student’s conversion while attending Bosco Tech can only be initiated by the student themselves because no instructor or Salesian would actively seek this. If that process is to continue, it would have to be with the knowledge and consent of his family. Even then, it would be treated with great care by all involved. For several years, Kyle had entertained thoughts of becoming Catholic.

It warms my heart to not only be able to tell this story, but to be a part of it as well. Spending Easter weekend with Kyle and two other generations of Bosco alumni—our host, Captain Albert Angel (EL ‘90), who could not have been more gracious, and Nicholas Loya (MSET ‘11)—was an absolute joy.

Because Kyle lives at the Academy and all the initiation rites were conducted at the Academy’s chapel, the “Yard” became our “center of operations.” We would leave for daily excursions into Washington D.C., but always to return to the Academy. Being able to live and interact with some of our country’s finest young men and women there left me humbled and returning home with a greater sense of pride for all branches of our armed forces, but most especially the Navy. Please join with me, for I promised that Bosco Tech would always pray for these fine young people.

I assured them that a petition at Mass would be said from now on not only for the men and women in our military, but also for our Bosco brothers in uniform.

TECH GRADUATE DONOVAN GONZALES EARNS DEGREE & JOB —BY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF STEM EDUCATION ERIC TOM

The last few months of any school year can be somewhat stressful, so it is encouraging to remember why we, as instructors, do what we do, and also what our students can accomplish. I was reminded of this by a graduation announcement I recently received from Donovan Gonzales (MSET '14).

Donovan was a student in my physics, AP Physics, and AP Chemistry classes, and is the most responsible person I have ever met. He was also part of the second cohort of interns we sent to The Boeing Company several years back. Two years ago, he served as a TA in our summer school geometry class and later as the teacher for the Science Explorations class. During that session, he met instructor Dr. Toner, who lead him to an internship at Northrop-Grumman. Donovan created such a positive (Continued on next page)

Donovan is now graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a double major in Materials Science and Mechanical Engineering and soon will begin his career at Northrop-Grumman.

While Donovan's achievements are due to his own abilities, it is gratifying to know that we helped him with academic and technical preparation, internships and professional networking, and daily operations that enabled him to realize his potential so fully. His success—and the success of all the other Techmen graduating from college this year—is our pride. Congratulations to Donovan, and his Tech classmates who are graduating from college at this time!

YOUNG ARTISTS EARN CITY & COUNTY ACCOLADES Eighteen Bosco Tech sophomores currently enrolled in the school’s Art Appreciation class recently shared their artistic abilities by helping paint the El Pavo Community Mural “Bread of Life” at San Gabriel's El Pavo Bakery. When the San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce officially unveiled the beautiful piece on April 18, the students were recognized by L.A. County and the City of San Gabriel and were presented with impressive certificates of commendation and recognition.

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES

2018 DBTI Black & Gold Gala—The Royal Tech Marching Band performed at the 2018 DBTI Black and Gold Gala held on March 23, at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

2018 Heritage Festival—Congratulations to the DBTI Wind Ensemble for winning the Silver award in the 2018 Heritage Festival! The band performed “Nessun Dorma” and “Metrix” during the competition at the Bolingbrook High School, competing against multiple ensembles from across the nation and Canada. Good job Techmen! As always, you make us proud!

While in Chicago, the band visited the Navy Pier, Millennium Park and Willis Tower; took a boat tour of the Chicago River, learning about its history and architecture; dined at some of its popular restaurants such as Giordanos and Portillos; and did an impromptu visit to the Chicago Cultural Center. The band also toured the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. The award ceremony was held at the Medieval Times, where the band and parents enjoyed dinner and a show. All in all, a very successful trip for the band. None of this would have been possible without the support of the Bosco Tech family. Thank you for your continued support!

Jazz Night Out—The band now turns its focus on the Jazz Night Out Concert to be held on Friday, May 18. This year’s theme is “Totally Awesome 80s!” Please join us for some fun as we listen to the Jazz Band perform your favorite 80s hits!

Food will be catered and served by Lascari’s Italian Restaurant.

Spring Concert —The DBTI Concert band and the Music Appreciation Class will be performing at the annual Spring Concert on Thursday, May 24. More information about the Spring Concert will become available in the coming weeks.

TRACK & FIELD NEWS —BY ASSISTANT TRACK & FIELD COACH BRAD STOLZ

Our Bosco Tech Track & Field team has done well this season. On March 21 at St. Paul HS, we competed against our next-door rivals Cantwell/Sacred Heart of Mary and won. There were many outstanding performances: in the sprints, JV freshmen Aidan Gomez and Kenneth Lopez came in 2nd and 3rd in the 100 meter, while Jun Jeong took 1st in the varsity. For 200 meters, Aidan PRed (set a new Personal Record) and Kenneth again took 3rd for JV. Varsity sprinter senior Sidney Herrera won the 200. For the 400 meter, Jun took 3rd (PR) senior Aaron Gonzalez took 2nd ( PR), while Sidney PRed. Varsity distance racers in the 800 - sophomore Joey Rivas, junior Joseph Cisneros, and senior Anthony Caballes (PR) won 1st, 2nd, & 3rd. This was repeated in the 1600, with: Joey 1st (PR), Joseph 2nd, & Anthony 3rd (PR). Joseph won the 3200. In varsity 110 hurdles senior Andres Moran (PR0 and junior Alvaro Chavez (PR) came in 1st and 2nd. Aaron Gonzalez won the 300 hurdles. Our varsity 4 X 1 relay racers Jun, Sidney, Aaron, and sophomore Ryan Suarez set a new PR. On the field, we did well also: JV freshman Aaron Reyes (PR) got 2nd in shot put, and varsity freshman Gabriel Gonzalez got 3rd. Discus was good for us also: Aaron took 1st (PR), and Gabriel 3rd (PR). Junior Raymond Gritton high jumped for 1st. Our varsity senior, Paul Erickson, in his very first time vaulting, reached a height of 7’ 6” and won the pole vault competition. This is quite an accomplishment, especially since we have no pole vault pit on which to practice.

On March 28, our defeat of our brother school Salesian, produced a similar amount of wins and rrecords. In the JV 100 sprints, Kenneth won 1st; For Varsity Sidney, Jun, Ryan won in that order, while Paul PRed. In the 200 JV, Kenneth was 1st and fellow freshman Adrian Lopez was second; in varsity Ryan (PR) took 1st. 400 meters: JV Kenneth 2nd and varsity Sid 1st , Aaron Gonzalez 2nd(PR), & Jun 3rd. – a clean sweep! For distance, varsity runners repeated themselves: Joey and Joseph 1st and 2nd , Anthony (PR) in the 800; 1600 Joey and Joseph 1st & 2nd again; 3200 saw Joseph and Anthony as #1 and #2. For 110 hurdles it was a repeat of Andres and Alvaro (PR) as 1st & 2nd. 300 hurdles was won by Aaron Gonzalez and Alvaro.

On the field, Gabriel took 2nd in shot and senior Isaiah Rojas got a new PR. JV discus saw Aaron Reyes as the winner, with varsity throwers Gabriel (PR), freshman Vincent Everett (PR), and Isaiah (PR) take 1st, 2nd and 3rd spots. We did well in varsity high jump also: Ray won 1st and Aaron Gonzalez 2nd. Andres won the varsity long jump. Paul Erickson repeated his 7’ 6” win.

There were certainly many high scores in many events in these two meets. The team has since competed in two final meets leading up to May 2 league finals. The CIF post regular season prelims is on May 12 in Carpinteria. We plan to be there!

SPRING BREAK EASTERN EUROPE TRIP —BY MR. BRAD STOLZ

This Easter break, seven Bosco Tech students, freshmen Aidan Gomez and Joseph Perez, sophomores Ryan Cayer, Maverick Henry, and Gabriel Gonzalez, junior Adrian Villegas, and senior Aaron Gonzalez had a very exciting geographic, cultural, and historic learning experience. Accompanied by three parents, a brother and sister, and lead by group leader Ms. Carolina Schmeisser and chaperone Coach Brad Stolz, the group spent March 29 to April 7 touring five countries seldom visited by Bosco Tech students: Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary.

The highlight of the Berlin portion was, of course, being next to and touching the Berlin Wall and visiting the Topography of Terror Museum on the site of the old SS and Gestapo headquarters. This was followed by a visit to Dresden, the city burnt to the ground in WWII (and location for the “Slaughterhouse Five” book and movie).

Prague, Czech Republic, was the former capital of the Holy Roman Empire and probably the most beautiful city on our tour. It has the classical features of old Europe with a lively Bohemian spirit, from the John Lennon Restaurant to the cobbled streets of 13th century Europe. From the Old Town Square with its 15th century astronomical clock to the Baroque statues of the Charles Bridge, we explored the architecture of the City of One Hundred Spires.

A long bus ride took us to Krakow, Poland, the only major Polish city not devastated during WWII, leaving the Old Town intact. We saw Wawel Cathedral where Polish kings were crowned and where Pope St. John Paul II once served. In Poland, we took the two most interesting side trips of the tour: we went deep underground into the Salt Mine, and also went on a very sobering and heart-wrenching visit to the Nazi concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau.

On our way to Hungary, our last major stop, our long bus ride took us through the beautiful rural snowcovered mountains of Slovakia. There we enjoyed a lunch stop at an Alpine restaurant where we were able to sample some delicious Solvakian cuisine while gazing at the snow around us.

Budapest was the last stop on our itinerary. We first took a walking tour of the city, passing the magnificent Parliament building. We were able to visit Buda and Pest on both sides of the Danube River.

Our final afternoon was spent either at the Hungarian Baths or shopping. After a great farewell dinner at a fancy restaurant, we ended our amazing trip with an hour-long evening cruise dancing and enjoying the sparkling lights of bridges and buildings along the beautiful Danube.

Much more is learned on even a short trip like this than can ever be learned in any classroom. This adventure will long be remembered!

SPRING BREAK JAPAN TRIP —BY JAPANESE INSTRUCTOR MS. RITSUKO ROWE

During this spring break, 27 Bosco Tech students, one parent, and three Bosco Tech teachers, including myself, took a trip to Japan and had a great time there. We visited Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Hiroshima, Tokyo and Numazu (in Shizuoka). It was the best time to visit Japan because the cherry blossoms were in full bloom, and they are everywhere. When the wind would blow, all the light colored petals fell on our shoulders and it was like a flower petal shower. The ground was covered in pink just like a pink carpet. It was beyond description.

We visited many temples and shrines as well as shopping areas. At temples and shrines, we felt very peaceful and some boys expressed how the environment made them calm and happy. The Bosco boys enjoyed eating, sightseeing, and shopping. We also visited Numazu Chuo High School that visited us last November, and they graciously welcomed us. Since we had many Bosco band members, we were able to play for them as they let us use their musical instruments. The boys did a fantastic job!

In Tokyo, the boys were excited to visit Akihabara, the world famous electronic town. There are buildings after buildings with electronic stuff and anime goods.

Some boys had five or six huge bags after shopping there. We also went on a campus tour of Tokyo University which is equivalent to Harvard University over there. My friend, an engineer, Dr. Minematsu who teaches at a graduate school at the University welcomed us with two graduate student guides. After the campus tour, the guides talked about their school, college life in general, and how important it is to prepare for college.

Thanks to new technology, we used an App called “WhatsApp” and we were able to send daily picture reports to all the parents back home. They enjoyed seeing their sons’ adventures. Many expressed sincere gratitude. I would like to personally thank all the parents who sacrificed themselves and worked extra hours for their sons’ Japan trip. Although some unexpected events happened during the trip, over all we enjoyed our trip and all of us came back safely. God bless our Bosco boys!

SOPHOMORE TO ATTEND USC SUMMER PROGRAM Hanyu Peter Song, a sophomore at Bosco Technical, has been accepted into the USC Summer Programs for high school students. Peter is enrolled in the university’s Exploration of Architecture course.

Peter is a high achieving, self-motivated student whose current technology program is MSET. An International sophomore, he was accepted to the prestigious USC summer program beginning in June, and for this accomplishment, with much pride, we recognize and congratulate Peter Hanyu Song.

2018 SKIN IN THE GAME—THE CAMPAIGN FOR TECHMAN FIELD The phrase “skin in the game” is a metaphor for actions on the field of play as well as the sentiment of incurring risk by being involved in achieving a goal. With that being said, we invite you to Play like a Champion! Champions do more than compete and win on the field – they set the example for others, role model positive behaviors and provide leadership to the group.

As part of the four pillars of Salesianity, ‘playground’ is important as it brings fun and play into our lives. Bosco Tech is deeply proud of each and every student athlete and we promote a positive culture as well as character development in sports for young people. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—2018 GRADUATION VIDEO A DVD of the Class of 2018’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available. The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas.

This is an opportunity to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many friends that have played an important part in his life over the last four years.

On June 8, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video before graduation day, parents who are interested will be invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire class of 2018.

The cost of each video is $35 (tax included). Send your order form and check to the Finance Office, making checks are payable to Bosco Tech. CELEBRATE THE CLASS OF 2018 WITH GRADUATION BALLOONS Celebrate your graduate with festive mylar or latex balloons. Take to dinner or decorate a family party following commencement exercises; they’re guaranteed to last all weekend. In accordance with Bosco Tech policies, balloons are not permitted in the seating area, so balloon pickups will be available immediately following the conclusion of the commencement ceremony (after the last graduate’s name has been called).

Small to large bouquets are available for $15-$45 and can be picked up on campus.
