2015 EUROPE-ASIA TRIP STUDENTS VISIT EPHESUS, TURKEY (SEE PAGE 12)
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Bosco Tech Families and Friends, This is an exciting time of year! Our students are gearing up for final exams, seniors are receiving college acceptance letters, and many juniors are obtaining prestigious summer internships—the sense of anticipation on campus is growing as our students are being recognized for their hard work and commitment to their studies! I am proud to announce the 2015 nominees for the Cardinal McIntyre award, given annually in honor of the school’s co-founder. The award is bestowed on an outstanding senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered at Bosco Tech. The recipient has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, involvement in community, and mastery of academic rigor, while also excelling in their academic studies. While the award recipient will be announced at graduation and presented with a scholarship by Bosco Tech’s Alumni Association, I would like to commend each nominee for their high achievement! Please join me in congratulating: • Landon K. Acevedo—Architecture and Construction Engineering • Jonathan T. Kaneshiro—Computer Science and Electrical Engineering • Nicolas E. De La Torre—Integrated Design, Engineering and Art • Robert M. Copado—Media Arts and Technology • Aidan B. Calvet—Materials Science, Engineering and Technology We are extremely proud of these young men and of all our students who are reaching their potential. I know that you, as their parents, are right behind them, encouraging and guiding them. On that note, let me also wish each mother a very special Mother’s Day with your loved ones! Best wishes, Xavier Jimenez Interim President
TECH TEAMS EARN HONORS AT L.A. COUNTY SCIENCE FAIR Two teams of Bosco Tech students participated in the recent L.A. County Science and Engineering Fair at the end of March. Their appearance followed months of work by the entire science department, with a particularly extraordinary effort by these six students, according to Mr. Eric Tom, Instructional Dean for Math, Science and Health. At the fair, the teams, comprised of juniors Reiley Akkari, Adam Razo and Andrew To, and freshmen Will Cosso, Austin Davis and Grayson Wade, were in competition with 889 other projects. Both teams won awards for their outstanding efforts. The juniors were awarded the U.S. Metric Society’s "Best Use of the International System of Units in a Science Fair Project” for their project on the effect of deck design on speed and acceleration. The freshmen won Honorable Mention in the category of Plant Biology for their hydroponics project. Pictured above are Adam Razo and Andrew To. Not pictured is Reiley Akkari who was attending KAIROS.

FROM THE SALESIAN DIRECTOR Hello Bosco Tech Family and Friends! I hope this message finds you in good spirits during these days of the Easter season (that ends after Pentecost Sunday on May 24). Jesus is victorious over death…Alleluia! The main message for the Easter season is that of peace and is uttered through the mouth of Jesus Christ after His resurrection in the presence of His disciples, who were behind locked doors because their fear. “Peace be with you,” He called to them three times (that were written down for us to see), while those words are called to us numerous times in our lives. He didn’t scold them for running and abandoning Him to suffer alone…He comforted them instead. These words are a healing remedy. All of us need to be forgiven and encouraged to begin our journey anew each day. However, in order for you and I to embrace this healing remedy, we need to let go of lot of things that we think will bring us happiness and satisfaction; these things will only make us happy for a short time. Sometimes sacrifices, as hard as they might seem, need to be made. Detach from the things that keep you from your potential in Him and attach yourself to God. May we have the willingness to ask to receive the Holy Spirit in order to surrender to the liberating power of God. Take courage. Fr. Chinh Nguyen, SDB Salesian Director

BOSCO TECH CONCERT BAND TRIUMPHS IN COLORADO SPRINGS —BY MR. RICHARD RANGEL, BAND BOOSTER Music Festival—In April, the long-awaited World Heritage Festival trip to Colorado Springs finally happened. The biggest event of the year for the Bosco Tech concert band was a success all around. Twenty-three students made the trip, along with Band Director Daniel Almanza and parent chaperones Jun Reyes and Richard Rangel. The group arrived in Denver on April 9 and performed for the festival judges the following afternoon. At the awards dinner, the boys met students from schools as far away as Utah, Nebraska and Kansas. The Concert Band was presented with a Silver Award for their terrific performance. In keeping with the school’s educational values, the weekend also included a selection of other activities. The boys visited the restored Pueblo Indian homes at the Manitou Cliff Dwellings, hiked a mountain trail in the famous Garden of the Gods, visited the U.S. Olympic Training Center, and conducted a walking tour of the University of Denver before flying home on April 12. It was a real adventure for everyone involved. We are very grateful for the hospitality provided by our friends at Sacred Heart Church of Colorado Springs, who were kind enough to provide lodging for the boys and their chaperones. The Concert Band would also like to thank everyone who helped to make this trip a reality by supporting our fundraising efforts. This was a major endeavor and we couldn’t have done it without the help of the Bosco Tech family! Jazz Night Out—The last band event for April 2015 is the annual Jazz Night Out extravaganza. We will have photos from Jazz Night Out in the June newsletter. Our final music event of the year will be the Spring Concert in May, which will include students from all of our music classes and ensembles. More information about the Spring Concert will be sent home with students in the coming weeks. We hope you can join us. 2015-2016 School Year—We’re now in the last months of the 2014-2015 school year. If you are a parent of a new or returning student for 20152016, encourage them to join the band program next year! This year’s Colorado trip is an excellent example of the kinds of opportunities that are available to our students. Check out the band's YouTube channel, DBTI Music at www.youtube.com/dbtimusic. For more information about the band program, contact music director Daniel Almanza at dalmanza@boscotech.edu or dbtimusic@gmail.com. SPORTS UPDATES —BY ASSISTANT TRACK AND FIELD COACH BRAD STOLZ Track & Field—The team did well in their second and third Camino Real league meets. Our second meet was against St. Paul during which we won a number of events: sprinters Starr Chen and David Fuentez won the 100 meter race, Kevin Gutierrez, the 300, and Starr Chen set a new personal record (PR) in winning the 200 meter. Starr had an excellent day, along with teammates Alex Candelaria, Kevin Gutierrez, and David Fuentez, winning the 4 X 1 relay. Distance runner Mikey Gonzales once again won the 1600 (2 mile) race. Pole vaulter Antonio Gomez won his event with a 10’ 6” vault. At the same time, our JV team did well in their competition. Our third meet was against St. Monica. In this meet, both our varsity and JV teams won, with the varsity winning decisively by100 points to 34. Varsity leader Mikey Gonzales won the 800 meter, and Alex Honegger set a PR by winning the 400 in 67 seconds. George Hernandez won the shot put, and Shant Loussararian and Joseph Bustamante came in second and third in the long jump. Our 4 X 4 relay team did outstanding work in winning their event. Finally, Antonio Gomez once again won the pole vault, this time with an 11’ vault. Our fourth and final regular season meet will be against a tough competitor, Salesian. It will be followed by league prelims, and on May 5 league finals, all at St. Paul’s track. Attention donors: even with multiple fundraisers our team of 45 still has need of about $20,000 of equipment. All help, no matter how little, matters to us and is greatly appreciated. Volleyball—This season’s young team played highly competitive games in a tough non-league schedule. Currently, standing at 1-3 in league, the team is looking to fight for a play-off spot with six more league matches to go. According to Volleyball Coach Damian Reyes, the team is improving greatly and gaining more and more experience with each match. Among the key players are sophomore outside hitter Jason Reyes and junior middle blockers Ezequiel Hernandez and Frank Acosta. Each player has displayed tremendous teamwork and cooperation. Look for more good news on these players in coming seasons! (Photo shows distance runner Mikey Gonzales.)
CAMPUS CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL DAY IN STYLE An annual Bosco Tech tradition brought together cultural performances from around the world. Students were treated to a rare sampling from a variety of countries across the globe at International Day on April 17.

The eager students will work under the mentorship of professional engineers and scientists to gain practical experience in STEM fields. The juniors headed to Boeing’s El Segundo facility this summer are: Erick Mendoza (MSET), Jacob McKinney (IDEA), Christian Apanecatl (IDEA), Andrew To (CSEE), Everson Cruz (MSET), and Justin Ruiz. (MAT) (not pictured).
IMPORTANT ROAD CONSTRUCTION NEWS The City of Rosemead began its Montebello Blvd. /Town Center Drive resurfacing median and landscaping project on April 20. The extensive improvements will involve removal and replacement of public sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and ramps as well as construction work on median islands and street reconstruction. This means that through June 30, 2015, we may experience inconvenient traffic delays, loss of driveway access, left-turn thoroughfare, and on-street parking on San Gabriel Boulevard. For these reasons, we strongly urge that parents abide by our student drop-off and pick-up policies whereby student traffic primarily takes place on the south end of campus by St. Joseph’s Salesian Youth Center off of Arroyo Drive.
FATHER-SON BREAKFAST AND MASS Approximately 3oo Bosco Tech students and their male relatives and friends gathered on the campus for the Tech’s Annual Father & Son Breakfast and Mass on April 19. Fr. Chinh Nguyen led the Mass while Principal Xavier Jimenez and Parent Council President Norma Camero provided the welcoming words prior to breakfast. Special thanks to Alumni Association representatives Mr. Manny Franco and Mr. Nacho Corrales and current parents Mr. Herman Eddie Mijangos and Mr. Silviano Cruz who spoke at this popular, traditional event.
INTERESTED IN HOSTING AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT? There are many reasons to consider hosting an international student. If your family is interested in the opportunity for the next school year, please contact International Program Director Olivia Kelly at (626) 940-2011 for more information. STUDENTS SPEND SPRING BREAK IN EUROPE —BY MR. BRAD STOLZ On April 1, three Bosco students (sophomore Kevin Salanguit, juniors Eric Mendoza and Jason Banuelos), as well as incoming freshman Kevin Banuelos, accompanied tour leader Mrs. Antonia Elenes and adult chaperones Mr. Brad Stolz and Mrs. Martha Lira on a four-country Easter tour. We visited Italy, Vatican City, Greece, and Turkey over two weeks. Our first stop was Rome, where we saw the Coliseum, Roman Forum, catacombs, and other historically significant sights. A highlight was our visit to Vatican City where we saw the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica. We had the privilege of attending two Masses with Pope Francis: the Good Friday liturgical service and the Easter Vigil Services, both in St. Peter's Basilica. Our opportunity was facilitated through one of the Salesian brothers who works at the Vatican Printery; he took us through areas of Vatican City where tourists are not usually permitted. Afterwards, we traveled to the island of Capri where we enjoyed a very soggy boat tour. This was followed by a visit to the ruins of Pompeii. Next came an overnight ferry to Greece where the first stop was the ruins of the Oracle of Delphi (where it snowed). In Athens, we saw the famous Acropolis and Parthenon. The final leg of the trip was a cruise to several Greek islands and Turkey. Unfortunately, we could not land on Mykonos because of the 35 mph winds, so we landed at the ancient city of Ephesus, Turkey, the site of one of St. Paul's journeys. Near this well-preserved city, we were able to visit Mary's house, where the Blessed Mother lived for a while after the death of Jesus. We then traveled to the Greek island of Patmos, where we were able to enter the cave where the Evangelist John wrote the Apocalypse. This was also the Greek Orthodox Easter, so we got to celebrate Easter twice! The last stop of our great trip was the volcanic island of Santorini. This was the most beautiful isle of all, and we had a beautiful sunny day to tour it. It was a fitting ending for what was a most memorable journey. It's one thing to see places in books, but an entirely different thing to actually be there!
