Edison International Honors Tech Senior William Ramos (see page 2)

TECH SENIOR NAMED EDISON SCHOLAR Edison International President and CEO Pedro J. Pizarro presented Bosco Tech senior Willam Ramos with a 2017 Edison International Scholar award and scholarship at an assembly on April 10.

William, who will begin his studies in chemistry at California Poly SLO this fall, was one of 1,200 applicants for the scholarship that is annually awarded to 30 high-achieving high school seniors within Edison’s broad service area who plan to pursue STEM degrees at four-year colleges and universities.

“Edison International congratulates this year’s outstanding scholars,” said Pizarro. “Through their pursuit of science, technology, engineering and math, we believe these students will make important contributions to our communities and society. We are proud to support them.”

William, who was surprised and excited to receive the Edison award, is studying Materials Science, Engineering & Technology (MSET). He is a member of the school’s award-winning band, a Youth Ministry program leader, and a Bosco Tech Ambassador.

“William truly epitomizes what a Bosco Tech student is,” said Bosco Tech President Xavier Jimenez. “He is an intelligent, inquisitive student who wholeheartedly applies himself to his studies and who appreciates the opportunity to learn. He plans to become a teacher in order to instill in other young people a love of science.

We’re thrilled that Edison International has recognized William’s abilities and potential.”

William’s good news appeared in La Opinion, the Pasadena Star-News, and several other publications and newspapers throughout the state.

2017 YURAK RUN Thanks to the sponsors, volunteers, donors and participants in the 2017 Yurak 5K Run, held on April 1. We are especially grateful to the Yurak family and, in particular the late Coach Bill Yurak’s brother, Donald, who presented the school with a generous donation at the start of the race. It was a beautiful, successful, fun-filled day—all proceeds from the event will go the school’s Yurak Athletic Center (YAC).

MSET STUDENTS WIN TOP FOUNDRY AWARDS Bosco Tech students certainly scored at last week’s American Foundry Society awards banquet. Every Bosco Tech entry in the AFS’ recent foundry competition placed within the top ten, even while competing against students from Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly, SLO, and other are high schools.

The Tech winners are: Freshmen Ryan Suarez First place (tie) Senior Zack Lugo Second place Freshmen Sassan Almasian Best of School Other Bosco Tech place earners were: Alexis Mendoza, Eric Valdovinos, Samuel Jacobs and Aaron Dominguez. Each one finished within the top 10 and was presented with a certificate of distinction. Congratulations to each of these MSET students!

BOSCO TECH SENIORS NOMINATED FOR TECHNOLOGY AWARD Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the co-founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, involvement in community, while also excelling in their academic studies.

This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. This award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.

The successful nominee will be named at graduation and presented with a $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the Bosco Tech Alumni Association. All of the nominees are to be commended for their achievement!

AP EXAMS IN MAY! Our junior and senor students will be culminating their studies in Advanced Placement (AP) courses when they take their College Board examinations during the first two weeks of May. These exams are very important as they determine whether a student may receive college credit for these courses at the university level.

Parents: please help your sons to be well prepared for these examinations. In addition to encouraging them to study hard and complete their final practices, be sure that they get plenty of sleep the night before each exam, begin the day with a nutritious breakfast, and come to class prepared for whatever requirements each exam may have.

TECHMEN TUTORING IS HERE —CAMPUS CLUB OFFERS ACADEMIC HELP TO OTHER STUDENTS —BY SOPHOMORE & PROGRAM FOUNDER ALEX CEPEDA

Hello, my name is Alex Cepeda. I am a sophomore Bosco Tech and the founder of Techmen Tutoring, an after-school program that offers assistance to students in any subject such as math, English and science.

I decided to create this club because everyday, I see one or two students who might need help in math class, or they may not understand a concept in chemistry. As an advanced student, I also sometimes struggle and ask for help when I need it. This first-year club, devoted to helping fellow students, has experienced gradual success and will, I believe, continue to grow in the future. There are currently three other academically qualified students enrolled in the club: sophomores Shuhao Lu and Justin Recinos, and freshman Yifan Zhang.

We encourage students to take advantage of this club’s outreach and receive benefits from Techmen Tutoring. Parents, if your son is having difficulty in any class, we will work with him and do all we can to help. All of our tutors will work hard to help raise those grades. PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP IS MAY 11 —DON’T MISS IT! Have you talked to your son lately about: --disaster preparedness --drug and alcohol abuse --cyber bullying?

Save the date and don't miss the last Bosco Tech Parent Council's workshop of the school year on Thursday, May 11, at 6 p.m. in the multi-purpose room. RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE IS MAY 18 Bosco Tech is hosting a blood drive on Thursday, May 18, throughout the school day, in the multi-purpose room. Parents and students 17 years and older are asked to consider donating. Students who are 16 can donate blood with the permission of their parent or legal guardians.

We are grateful for the incredible past participation of our Tech community in our regularly held blood drives. Donated blood is a priceless gift!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—2017 GRADUATION VIDEO A DVD of the Class of 2017’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available.

The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas.

This is an opportunity to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many friends that have played an important part in his life over the last four years.

On June 9, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video before graduation day, parents who are interested will be invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire class of 2017.

SPORTS UPDATES MORE WINS & PERSONAL RECORDS FOR TRACK & FIELD —BY ASSISTANT COACH BRAD STOLZ

The end of March and the beginning of April were a busy but rewarding time for Bosco’s Track & Field team. Many of our athletes are now in the Camino Real League’s list of the top 10 athletes in each event: —In sprints: seniors Rey Castellanos and Roman Kirkbride (100 meter), juniors Forest Yang and (200 and 400 meter) and Sidney Herrera (200, 440 and 800 meter) —Distance: freshmen Joey Rivas and Casey Reynolds (3200 meter) —Hurdles: junior Andres Moran and senior Auggie Escalera (110 meter), juniors Aaron Gonzalez, Gabriel Espejel, and Andres Moran (300 meter) —4 x 1 Relay: Roman Kirkbride, Rey Castellanos, Forest Yang, and Sidney Herrera —Shot Put: freshman Daniel Harrell, sophomore Gabriel Gonzales, senior Noel Cordero —Discus: Daniel Harrell, Gabriel Gonzales, senior Diego Vargas —High Jump: Andres Moran and senior Shant Loussararian —Pole Vault: Shant Loussararian, senior Sebastian Rojas, and Casey Reynolds (#1, 2 and 4 in league, respectively.)

In our second league meet on March 22, we defeated Salesian by an outstanding score of 102-17. Twelve of our athletes set a new personal record (PR). Of special note were Diego Vargas who won discus with his PR of 92 feet and Shant Loussararian who won pole vault with his PR of 9 feet.

In our third league meet in March 29 against St. Anthony, we narrowly lost by about 10 points. However, there were 14 PRs. In addition, Sidney Herrera PRed in 100, 200, 400 meter sprints, freshman Ryan Cayer won the 1600 and 3200 meter races, as did Aaron Gonzalez in the 300 hurdles.

Our fourth league meet was against St. Paul on April 5, and there were 10 PRs. Juniors Aaron Gonzalez and Forest Yang both made two PRs. Our fifth and last regular season league meet was on April 12 against St. Monica, which we won 108 to 85, even though we had only five athletes who earned a new PR: seniors Roman Kirkbride and Noel Cordero, junior Aaron Gonzalez, and freshmen Oscar Cendejas and Casey Reynolds. It should be noted that Casey cleared five feet to finish third overall in his very first time pole vaulting. We look forward to seeing how he will do as a sophomore.

On April 26, the Camino Real League Prelims were held at St. Paul High School, followed a week later on May 3 with the league finals, also at St. Paul’s. Details will be in the next issue. The following week, on May 13, are the CIF Southern Section Division 4 Prelims at Carpentaria High School. We look forward to sending a number of athletes to this very competitive meet.

LACROSSE —BY HEAD COACH KEVIN HOLT

The 2017 Tiger Lacrosse team is celebrating its third season at Bosco Tech. In a rebuilding year, after graduating 15 seniors, the team is making great strides in improving their game. Despite a 3-11 record so far, with three games left in the season, they continue to improve.

Lead scorers are midfield captain and junior Alex Martinez and attacker Dean Minter (freshman) have combined to score 25 of the team’s 37 goals. As a mostly freshman team who have never played lacrosse before attending Bosco Tech, they show great promise.

We look forward to a bright future, growing the game of lacrosse and living up to our team motto: Honor, hustle, humility. Go, Tigers!

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES

2017 Heritage Festival Congratulations to the DBTI Symphonic Band for winning the Silver award in the 2017 Heritage Festival! On March 30, 2017, the Don Bosco Tech Symphonic Band, consisting of 33 students, travelled to San Antonio, Texas to participate in the 2017 Heritage Festival. On Friday, March 31, the band performed “Cumberland Cross” and “The Great Locomotive Chase” during the competition at the University of the Incarnate Word. The band was awarded Silver while competing against multiple ensembles from several different states. Good job Techmen! As always, you make us proud!

During the first night in San Antonio, the band was treated to a Texas style BBQ dinner by DBTI alum John Bel, class of 1964. Mr. Bel talked with the band about his experiences at Bosco and how those experiences helped him achieve the successes in his life.

Thank you, Mr. Bel, for the hospitality and for being a role model to our boys!

While in San Antonio, the band learned about the San Antonio history by visiting the Battle for Texas Experience and doing a tour of the Alamo. The students also visited the San Antonio Riverwalk for a little shopping and dining. The award ceremony was held at the Six Flags Fiesta Texas. The boys enjoyed a day at the amusement park before attending the evening banquet and award ceremonies. All in all, it was a very successful trip for the band. None of this would have been possible without the support of the Bosco Tech family. Thank you for your continued support!

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS (CONTINUED) Jazz Night Out The band now turns its focus on the Jazz Night Out Concert to be held on April 28, 2017. This year’s theme was “Legends of Rock!” Look for details on the Jazz Band’s annual event in the June issue.

Black and Gold Gala The Marching Band will be performing at the 2017 DBTI Black and Gold Gala to be held on Sunday, April 30, 2017 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles.

Spring Concert The DBTI Concert band and the Music Appreciation Class will be performing at the annual Spring Concert on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. More information about the Spring Concert will become available in the coming weeks.

Academic Spotlight Congratulations to the band’s own William Ramos for being awarded the 2017 Southern California Edison Scholarship! William was one of 30 students that were awarded the scholarship out of a total of about 1,200 applicants. Good job Will! (See the full story about Will on page 2 of this issue.)
