Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech Family— It’s been a great blessing to welcome both students and parents back to campus! You have my deepest appreciation for your cooperation and your flexibility during the first few weeks of the semester; while safely addressing COVID hasn’t been fun or easy, it has been necessary. For your ongoing help and understanding, I thank each of you; for the well being of our Tech community, I am prayerfully grateful!

Please be assured that we will continue to follow guidance from the LACDPH and the CDC, which both recommend continued mask wearing while indoors for the improved safety of students, teachers and staff. I am happy to report, though, that as of February 22, masks became optional outdoors.

Students are regularly reminded and urged to keep some social distancing outdoors (to eat lunch, between classes, before and after school).

There are a few dates I’m asking you to put on your calendar: Quarter Exams: Mon., March 7-Thurs., March 10. It’s hard to believe that March 11 marks the start of the 4th quarter.

Parent Teacher Conferences: Wed., March 13-Thurs., March 14, Report Cards will be prepared and electronically sent home at the same time. Conferences will be virtual again; consensus says that more parents are able to meet with more instructors using this method. Please remember you can contact a teacher, at any time, to discuss your son's progress, even in person. As always, please use FACTS Family Portal to monitor your son’s grades and help get an early start on any potential concerns.

Spring Break: Because Easter is late again, we have two well-earned breaks this year--Sat., March 19Sun., March 27, is the full week Spring Break, while Thurs., April 14-Mon., April 18, is our five-day Easter break A special congratulations to our varsity Basketball team who made it into this year’s quarter-finals. We witnessed some remarkably exciting moments in these games that brought together a proud Tech family. To these young men, and to all our athletes who are putting in the hard work, great job, gentlemen!

As we move through the season of Lent together, as a faith community, please join me in remembering that it represents the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert, praying and fasting. When we consciously sacrifice during this season, it is to honor Jesus’s time in the desert and His ultimate sacrifice. More than just giving up something, Lent is considered a time of penance, to address how and where we have gone astray, or sinned, and to change our behavior for the better. It’s the perfect time for an extra prayer and reflection, fasting, and, extra charity to others. Let’s commit to one another to mindfully strive to become who the Lord intends us to be and in doing so, set an example for our young men.

As always, I am thankful for our community that works together to consistently guide hard working and enthusiastic young people—they are our future!

Tඁൾ Gൾඈඋ඀ൾ H. Mൺඒඋ Fඈඎඇൽൺඍංඈඇ Gඋൺർංඈඎඌඅඒ Rൾආൾආൻൾඋඌ Dඋ. Sඍൾඏൾඇ Tඈඇൾඋ The George H. Mayr Foundation has made a $50,000 grant to Bosco Tech in memory of Dr. Steven Toner, who taught mathematics at the Tech from 2016 to 2018. The gift will enhance the Dr. Steven Toner Math Award endowment, annually recognizing a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence and distinction through high performance in math.

Dr. Toner was a friend and neighbor of Mayr Foundation Chair Catherine Olson until his passing in 2018. The Foundation’s recent generous gift was made in addition to its annual grant of $30,000 to provide scholarships for current students.

Providing scholarship grants to California private schools since 1949, the Foundation is named after entrepreneur and real estate investor George H. Mayr who found great satisfaction in helping students pursue educational ambitions that he himself was unable to achieve because of a lack of finances.

Wanting to inspire young people to consider engineering professions, Dr. Steven Toner first came to the Tech in 2016 to teach Geometry and Calculus. Although illness cut short Dr. Toner’s time at the Tech, Mrs. Olson recalls that he considered working with Bosco Tech students a highlight of his impressive career.

Refusing to draw a salary, he tirelessly volunteered his time, even making himself available, via email, to explain difficult math concepts the night before homework was due.

He recognized the invaluable opportunity to imbue students with real world experiences, where math and physics were applied daily, as well as the ability to impart practical information such as what employers seek when hiring engineers and scientists.

A retired engineer with a storied career at the Northrop Grumman Corporation, Dr. Toner was Vice President of the company’s Western Region Engineering and Logistics organization, where 1,500 engineers reported to him. A 28-year veteran of the company, he was assigned to the Space-Based Infrared Systems program, and also served as deputy Vice President for Northrop Grumman Aerospace System’s Missile and Space Defense business.

The married father of two served as a member of the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board and was presented with a medal for Exemplary Civilian Service by the Department of the Air Force. He sat on the UCLA Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Industrial Advisory Board.

He held a bachelor’s degree in engineering and applied science from California Institute of Technology (Caltech) and a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from UCLA. He also earned a doctorate in mechanical engineering from Caltech and completed the executive education program at the UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management and the General Management Program at Harvard Business School.

Dr. Toner will be remembered by the Bosco community as a kind and knowledgeable educator, and the George H. Mayr Foundation’s generosity will further that memory.

Sർඈංඋ—Nൺඏං඀ൺඍංඇ඀ ඍඁൾ Cඈඅඅൾ඀ൾ Sൾඅൾർඍංඈඇ Aඇൽ Aඉඉඅංർൺඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ Bosco Tech is pleased to announce that we are introducing a new system called Scoir to help our students and parents navigate the college selection and application process. Students, parents, and guardians should have received an invitation to join the platform via email.

These videos will help give you an idea of what to expect: - Student Overview - Parent / Guardian Overview - En Español Once students have activated their account, they can immediately begin using Scoir to search for and start building a list of colleges. Students can also begin building their profile by listing their interests, extracurricular activities, jobs, and volunteer experience. This will not only help teachers and counselors compose effective letters of recommendation, it can also be easily exported as a resume.

Sophomores and juniors will be able to complete brain games and career assessments via YouScience to understand and identify their areas of strength. (You may only complete the YouScience brain games once, so make sure you try your best!) Using the YouScience results, students can build a career profile and explore majors and universities associated with those careers.

Parents and guardians will be able to view their student's profiles, see their college list, conduct their own college searches, and suggest colleges for their student to consider. Scoir also provides parents with financial tools so they can get a better sense of the cost of attendance at various colleges during the selection process.

We are excited to be able to provide Scoir to our students and families, and we feel confident that you will find it helpful and easy to use. Scoir also has a great app, available in the App Store or via Google Play.

Aඍඁඅൾඍංർ Dංඋൾർඍඈඋ’ඌ Uඉൽൺඍൾ Dear Bosco Tech School Community, Our 2021-2022 Winter Sports season has concluded in a positive way. Both our soccer and basketball programs had great seasons. The soccer team, lead by first season head varsity soccer coach Michael Mojarro, finished in fourth place in league and barely missed the opportunity to make the playoffs. On January 18, in the weekly CIF divisions polls ranking, our varsity team placed just outside the Top 10 weekly polls. Coach Mojarro led five student-athletes to earn All Second Santa Fe League Honors. These students include: Chavez, Marcus Sr CB #7 Bosco Tech Manzanilla, Ivan So MF #31 Bosco Tech Alvarez, Alexis Sr CB #11 Bosco Tech Gomez, Nicholas Jr MF #19 Bosco Tech Blake, Jonathan Sr MF #18 Bosco Tech We are very excited about the direction of the soccer program moving forward.

The 2021-2022 varsity basketball team met every challenge and delivered under Coach Michael Romo’s leadership. For this season, our tigers were brought up one division higher from the previous year. During the first fourteen games of the season, the Tigers went 14-2, including two big victories against Cantwell and Rowland. The Rowland victory was the Championship game of our Basketball Tournament that we hosted in December. The Tigers were led by two outstanding freshmen, Jaden Erami and Darius Benitez. Jaden's season stats were 23.7 points per game, 2.3 assists per game and 7.3 rebounds. Darius's season stats were 16.7 points per game, 4.8 assists per game and 3.9 rebounds per game. Coach Romo led these two student-athletes to earn All Santa Fe League Honors, with Jaden being selected first team and Darius was selected second team.

Lastly, this varsity basketball team went to the 2022 CIF Southern Section Quarterfinals. They were one out of eight remaining teams in the playoffs. Coach Romo has made the Quarterfinals the past two seasons (2021 5A and 2022 5AA). We ca see basketball program has a very bright and exciting future!

I want to say thank you to all the parents, our student-athletes and especially to our senior parents and to our seniors. Thank you for your passion, energy, and commitment to your teams and to your school community.

Tൾർඁ Sඎඉඉඈඋඍ Aඏൺංඅൺൻඅൾ ඍඈ Aඅඅ Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Tech Support is now available to all students who would like extra instruction in any subject; it is not only for students referred to Tech Support by their academic counselor.

Tutoring is available during lunch and after school Monday through Friday. Most sessions take place in the classroom, unless prior arrangements have been made. Parent meetings can be arranged before tutoring sessions begin, and follow-up sessions are available to students.

MAT Jඎඇංඈඋ Lඈඋൾඇඓඈ Bൾඇංඍൾඓ Cඁඈඌൾඇ ൿඈඋ Sൺඅൾඌංൺඇ Lൾൺൽൾඋඌඁංඉ Tൾൺආ A big shout out to the Tech’s own Lorenzo Benitez (MAT ’23) who has been selected to represent our school in the 2022 Spirit Team that prepares the annual Salesian Youth Leadership Conference. Lorenzo is a part of an eight person team, comprised of high school students from California’s Salesian schools.

“These young people have decided to put their desire to serve into concrete action and have been chosen by the Administrative Team for SYLC 2022,” said Fr. Fabian Alberto Cardenas Chinchilla, SDB, who is the Province’s Delegate for Youth Ministry. “Thank you to the Salesians and lay partners in mission who have accompanied them with their witness. We entrust ourselves to your prayers and good wishes so that in the two preparation retreats that will be held in the month of February and April, we can build bonds of familiarity in the spirit of our charism. We hope to have an experience of SYLC that positively affects and renews each of our works, our lives, and the lives of many other you.”

What does Lorenzo hope to bring back to his Tech home from the experience? “It would be what I would want even if I wasn't a part of SYLC,” he said. “I want these kids to know the oratory in their heart. I guess that's the best way to say it. I don't want anyone to be left out in the oratory aspect. I guess I hope that my work can do something, anything, to fulfill that goal. Then again, that goal isn't a one person job, not even a one SYLC job. But an ‘everyone’ job. But yeah, I—with God's help of course, can't forget that—just want to do what I can in that. Everyone is family, it doesn't matter if you are similar, different, popular, not popular, or whatever. You guys are family!”

After a hiatus (for obvious reasons) in 2021, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick—loyal friends of our own Bishop David O’Connell—are returning in 2022 to raise a pint, share great Irish fare, and swap stories, all in support of Bosco Tech. And you’re invited!

Friday 2/4—Band came out to support our Bosco Tech Basketball team at their Senior game! It was a great evening and a lot of fun to be able to come out and cheer on our team, who got the win!

Monday 2/7—Band performed on campus for the first day back for all students! It was great to be back IN PERSON and be able to perform for all.
