Alumni Return Virtually to Bosco Tech Engineers Day 2021

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ & Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech Families, Now that we are beginning to see a decline in COVID transmission rates and an increase in the availability of vaccinations, it is reasonable for us to consider the possibility of students returning to in-person hybrid instruction.

However, while these developments clearly help, we are still faced with a slow roll-out of the vaccine and the continued spread of the virus. Vaccinations for our faculty and staff is extremely important----ensuring that our teachers and staff are protected will provide added security when your sons return to campus. Educators will be eligible for the vaccine March 1, but must wait until other priority groups have received their doses. We are doing our best to coordinate with the county for an effective vaccination process for our staff. This process is being monitored daily as we plan to vaccinate as soon possible.

Given these circumstances, we will proceed with caution and begin our transition back to campus with in-person outdoor sports practice and small group/ club activities. This week, we restarted our athletic conditioning for several of our sports programs. We demonstrated last summer and in the fall semester that we can operate these activities safely and effectively, and we ask our students to continue to respect the required public health best practices.

As for official athletic competition, CIF has cleared cross-country, tennis, and golf to compete this Spring season. We are pleased to have our athletes back on campus, sharing time with their teammates, and competing for a league title.

Upon returning to hybrid instruction, we can assure you that the facilities will be modified with safety modifications such as temperature check stations, plexiglass barriers, face coverings/shields, mobile wash stations, abundant hand sanitizers, foot traffic control, and routine sanitization of classroom/lab space.

We will continue to monitor the public health situation and provide you with updates in the weeks to come on our transition to hybrid instruction.

Be sure to join us as the Parent Council gets creative in bringing you a fun and virtually interactive way for the boys and their dads or mentors to learn more about each other, while also getting a chance to meet other like-minded dads!

The event will include a prayer service, surprise guest speakers, fun raffles, and much more! We extend the invite to grandfathers, uncles, godfathers or that special figure that is always there making an impact. More information will be coming soon. ൾSඉඈඋඍඌ Uඉൽൺඍൾ —Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ’ඌ Nൾඐൾඌඍ CIF Tൾൺආ ංඌ Mൺ඄ංඇ඀ Nൾඐඌ CIF Esports Victory - League of Legends Varsity showed their might proves against St. John Bosco High School with a shutout of 2-0, best out of 3, in their first scrimmage of the Spring 2021 season.

Congratulations to Tech sophomore Yiluo Huang who was ranked #2 in the CA State standings (10.0 Overall KDA, 458.80 Gold Per Minute). Sophomore Aston Wu is #4 in the CA State standings (8.80 Overall KDA, 462.62 Gold Per Minute).

Tൾർඁ Aඅඎආඇඎඌ ൺඍ NASA JPL Pංඏඈඍൺඅ ංඇ Mൺඋඌ Lൺඇൽංඇ඀ In addition to February 18’s Engineers Day activities, Bosco Tech live streamed the exciting Perseverance Mars landing via Zoom. Tech alumnus Paul Justin Ramirez (Materials Science '01), Parachutes, Explosives and Ordnance Systems Subject Matter Expert at NASA, along with several other Tech alumni working at JPL, played a key role in the expedition. Paul was involved in landing technology and actually packed the vital parachute that enabled the vehicle to safely reach Mars’ surface. The Tech community was cheering alongside Paul and his Tech brothers and colleagues at the exciting moment of touchdown!

Eඇ඀ංඇൾൾඋඌ Dൺඒ ൺඍ Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ Iඇඍඋඈൽඎർൾඌ Aඅඎආඇං ඍඈ Cඎඋඋൾඇඍ Sඍඎൽൾඇඍඌ Representing organizations like SpaceX, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Universal Studios Hollywood, Bosco Tech alumni working in a variety of engineering professions addressed current students at their alma mater, on Feb. 18, commemorating National Engineers Week. The graduates virtually shared their educational and career pathways and answered questions from students, the vast majority of whom are considering STEM-related college majors and careers.

“Because of the science and technology-focused nature of our curriculum, Engineers Week has always been a special celebration at Bosco Tech,” said Principal Jeff Krynen. “Hearing from alumni who are successful engineering professionals in a broad range of fields is an invaluable opportunity for current students. That connection to the ‘real world,’ with practical insights coming from past students, helps to better prepare our young people for the many opportunities that await them after high school.”

Nൺඍංඈඇൺඅ Hඈඇඈඋ Sඈർංൾඍඒ Hൾඅඉඌ Cൺආඉൾඌංඇඈ Fൺආංඅංൾඌ Major kudos to the Tech's dedicated National Honor Society members who collected more than 500 pairs of work gloves, gifts for kids, and backpacks for farmworkers and their families located in Central California, through San Gabriel Mission's Campesino Work Glove and Gift Drive. Tech senior and NHS member Antonio Robles helped load the honor society's massive donation for delivery. We're so proud of our young men and their commitment to helping others!

Yඈඎඍඁ Mංඇංඌඍඋඒ Cඈඋൾ Tൾൺආ—ඍඁൾ Sඉංඋංඍ ඈൿ Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ Youth Ministry is responsible for the Church portion St. John Bosco’s Oratory Model. The group is accomplishing this by working as a collaborative team that serves and nourishes the spiritual side of Bosco Tech and its students. They work together to create prayer services, character assemblies, retreats, and other liturgical events. Serving within Youth Ministry is the Core Team, an assortment of new and more seasoned members that take a leading role in the creation of these and other projects. This student team, combined with Mr. Herrera and Mr. Stolz's guidance and wisdom, pushes their creativity and desire to nurture our school’s spirituality. We're a family, bound to one another by this desire to serve. Mr. H and Mr. Stolz are more than proud of our team and of their efforts, and are more than eager to end the year strong!

Miguel Angel Martinez (MSET ‘23) Reason you joined Core Team: I joined the Core Team to get closer to God, especially during these times. When I was a freshman, I saw many people participating in church as they always looked so happy. Entering sophomore year, I wanted to be more involved within the church and overall, just the school. I joined the Core Team and I was given opportunities to help and talk about my personal experiences. Not only is this just a team, but a family!

Core Team Projects: Hope Speech, Ash Wednesday Service presented by the sophomores, and I have helped with readings we use in assemblies.

How you adapted to quarantine: I adapted to quarantine pretty well as I was able to distract myself with extracurricular activities. I feel like this pandemic overall matured me to be the bigger person that I am today.

Isaac Mendoza (ACE ‘22) Reason why you joined Core Team: The reason I joined the Core Team was to show and improve my skills of being able to lead a brotherhood. I wish to continue on this journey as I continue to learn more about the Bosco Tech oratory.

Core Team Projects: I’ve worked on character assemblies, prayer services, and helping run through retreats.

How you adapted to quarantine: I managed more throughout my time off, managed and sorted out my time on doing things I enjoy doing the most.

Hopes for this year: I hope that Covid-19 and the whole global pandemic will come to an end soon. I also hope that I stay physically healthy and strong but also mentally prepared for anything that comes in my way.

Carlos Campa (CSEE ‘22) Reason why you joined Core Team: I joined Core Team because I wanted to strengthen my relationship with God and spread His love throughout the school. I hope to encourage others to reflect on their spiritual mindset and help mature them into people of faith.

Projects: Some projects I have worked on for Core Team were reconciliation services and the St. John Bosco feast day prayer service.

How you adapted to quarantine: I’ve adapted to quarantine by familiarizing myself with the technology I’ll be using while at home. I’ve become accustomed to chatting with friends online and completing most of my academic work on my computer.

Hopes for this year: I hope to see my brothers back on campus soon and united through the oratory under the guidance of Don Bosco. (continued on next page)

Yඈඎඍඁ Mංඇංඌඍඋඒ Cඈඋൾ Tൾൺආ (ਃਏ਎ਔਉ਎ਕਅ਄) Antonio Robles (IDEA ‘21) Reason why you joined Core Team: Since I was little, I enjoyed talking to others and mixing it with my faith. It showed me that I could really reach out to other people and help them.

Projects you worked on for Core Team: Editing, formatting and managing character assemblies and prayer services.

How you adapted to quarantine: I am better at multitasking and spreading out my time more efficiently for multiple projects and school work, which helped me to accomplish more my senior year.

Hopes for this year: To finish off the year stronger than I did last year.

College acceptances so far/applications (for seniors): Applied to Cal States (Poly Pomona, Poly San Luis Obispo and Long Beach), Boise State University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Accepted at: New Mexico Tech and Iowa State University.

Anthony Razo (MSET ‘21) Reason why you joined Core Team: The reason why I joined Core Team was to help the school with the Church aspect of the Oratory. Knowing the difficulty this year, I know many students will be faced with problems with their faith, hence why I joined so I can try my best to show these students that God is present in their lives and that He loves them.

Projects you worked on for Core Team: Some projects that I have worked on while in the Core Team were several character assemblies, cards to first responders, and all the prayer services of this school year.

How you adapted to quarantine: I adapted to quarantine pretty well as it has been a difficult journey to say the less. However, I feel that it has matured me to a much deeper level than I would have expected.

Hopes for this year: The things I look forward to this year is graduation. I also look forward to going to college as it is the next step in my life and I have high hopes for my education.

College acceptances so far/applications (for seniors): UCLA (Material Science Major), Cal Poly Pomona (Manufacturing Engineering Major), Cal State Long Beach (Physics Major) Angel Almaraz-Mesa (MAT ‘21) Reason why you joined core team: To further explore my relationship with my faith and contribute to my community here at Bosco Tech.

Projects you worked on for the core team: As the First Among Equals leader of the team, I’ve contributed to every project for the past year by leading my team into each event.

How you've adapted to quarantine: In the now quiet and bleak time of the pandemic, I’ve dedicated my own efforts into this team of ours. To quote my grandmother, work is a vitamin to me. It distracts me and also sharpens my mind, along with my faith.

Things you hope for this year: I hope and pray that this pandemic may come to an end, of course. But I would also hope that with this new beginning, we can bring ourselves one step closer to enlightenment, and act more tolerable to those around us.

College acceptances so far/applications (for seniors): I’ve been accepted into Azusa Pacific University, Cal State LA, Cal State Dominguez Hills, and I now await for acceptances into USC, UCLA, and Cal State Long Beach. (continued on next page)

Projects you worked on for Core Team: Character Assemblies and working on Ash Wednesday.

How you adapted to quarantine: Occupied myself with other things such as working out.

Things you hope for this year: That people improve themselves during this pandemic instead of allowing themselves to gain a couch-butt.

Jericho Santiago (MAT ‘21) Reason Why You Joined Core Team: Coming from a Catholic background, I gravitated towards becoming a member of the Youth Ministry to deepen my understanding of what it meant to be a disciple of Christ.

Projects You Worked on For The Core Team: Having been a member of Core Team for a good majority of my high school career (4 years), I’ve taken part in every Youth Ministry-related event conducted on campus.

How You’ve Adapted to Quarantine: Quarantine has acted as a period of reflection of not only my faith, but my self as a whole. I’ve taken advantage of the time apart from the usual social standard to improve my mental and physical being.

Things You Hope For This Year: When we first stepped onto this campus, we were tiny bright-eyed kids, but now we’re leaving as full-fledged adults.

It’s still hard to believe that in just four short years, we all stumbled here as one collective brotherhood. As the Bosco seniors move towards the end of their high school lives, I wish for each of us to grasp lasting hope amid a seemingly hopeless world.

College Acceptances and Applications (for seniors): At the moment, I’ve been accepted into Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Pomona, Cal State Long Beach, and San Diego State University. That being said, I’m still awaiting admission decisions from Harvard, Pepperdine University, University of San Francisco, University of Southern California, Cal State San Luis Obispo, and various UCs. Owen Frayre (MAT ‘23) Reason why you joined Core Team: I joined core-team to grow in my spirituality. I like being involved with the school so joining the Core Team was a great opportunity for me to do so.

Projects you worked on for Core Team: Sophomore Retreat.

How you adapted to quarantine: I adapted to quarantine by finding new hobbies such as basketball and found new ways to talk/hang out with my friends.

Things you hope for this year: I hope that I am able to interact with all of my classmates once again and that I can grow closer to them.

If that is you, then core team is definitely the way to go. I joined to to develop myself spiritually as well as gain leadership skills to last a lifetime.

Projects You Worked on For The Core Team: I have worked on character assemblies, masses, retreats, prayer services and more.

How You’ve Adapted to Quarantine: Same attitude, different location and circumstances. Of course zoom took some learning but the drive and motivation for core team and the school kept me going.

Things You Hope For This Year: I hope that we all grow stronger and overcome barriers as brothers.

College Acceptances and Applications (for seniors): Adrian College for lacrosse, Pepperdine University, University of Dallas for lacrosse, Cal State LA and Cal State San Bernardino, and ASU.

Cൺආඉඎඌ Gඋඈඎඉඌ Hൾඅඉ Hඈආൾඅൾඌඌ Vൾඍඌ Many thanks to dedicated students and families from Bosco Tech’s Red Cross Club, Cheer program, Key Club, and National Honor Society who joined together to make this happen--hundreds of hygiene items for homeless veterans were dropped off at the American Red Cross chapter in Arcadia!

The items were taken to the Armed Forces Division of the American Red Cross, which arranges for distribution to the homeless vets. The original drop off date in December was delayed due to the pandemic restrictions.

The next upcoming service project is to collect items for refugees; an effort that will be sponsored by the Red Cross's International Relief Division. Special thanks to Mrs. Anne Sigoloff, who moderates the Red Cross Club, for organizing the efforts and making the huge drop off!

Sർඁඈඅൺඋඌඁංඉඌ Aඏൺංඅൺൻඅൾ ඍඁඋඈඎ඀ඁ FASTWEB The Counseling Department recently emailed students information regarding scholarships available through Fastweb. For several years, the Fastweb organization has produced one of the largest and most comprehensive lists of scholarships available for high school, college and graduate students. There are scholarships designated for all applicants and there are several scholarships available only to select groups of applicants. Mr. Ray Chavez has forwarded a list of hundreds of scholarships broken down into groupings. Please keep in mind that you are likely eligible for several of these scholarships in multiple categories.

Freshmen are encouraged to review these scholarship opportunities that await you as you prepare for your college education during the next few years.
