Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech family— As you already know, in the coming weeks, the Tech will host a team of educators from throughout California representing the Western Catholic Educational Association. These esteemed guests will conduct our accreditation site visit that is scheduled for Sunday to Wednesday, March 8-11. Accreditation has been described as a quality check. I recently came across a description that said: an accredited school has gone through a rigorous examination by an authority on education to make sure the school meets certain standards and is fully qualified to teach students the programs they are offering. It is our promise to families that we are effectively fulfilling our mission to offer the best overall program for students. The self-examination portion is invaluable as a way to review our current procedures and reflect on ways we can improve and make our program even stronger. These are always vital steps for a responsible organization that seeks to constantly improve. The external review component will conclude with a comprehensive report and set of recommendations by the site team. I’d like to thank you each of you who helped in the months of hard work that led up to this point; we are confident that our cooperative diligence will yield good results. Once the final report is released, we will let you know of the outcome and the recommendations the site group makes for an even better Bosco Tech! I know that we all are working toward the same goal because our students/yours sons, and future Tech students, are our priority and are the beneficiaries of any improvement! Pൺඌඍ Bඈൾංඇ඀ Iඇඍൾඋඇඌ Aൽඏංඌൾ 2020 Cൺඇൽංൽൺඍൾඌ Special thanks to Tech seniors Sergio Jimenez-Ceron (IDEA), Lorenzo Pedroza (CSEE), Aaron DeCastro (CSEE), Raphael Napinas (CSEE) and George Flores (CSEE) who were guest speakers at a recent Boeing internship parent and candidate info meeting. Mr. Charles Bogart (photographed in the middle) is the Boeing internship program director. The past interns' presentations to the junior candidates were thoughtful, practical and inspiring (and the 'airplane' gestures were pretty cute!) Boeing is one of several Los Angeles-area companies who generously offer valuable internship opportunities to Tech students. Participating juniors undergo extensive training in work place practices, etiquette, resume writing, and professional presentation skills before beginning the summer jobs. After completing the internships and submitting a report, interns earn class credit. Does your company offer internship opportunities for high school students? Eඇ඀ංඇൾൾඋඌ Dൺඒ, Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ Sඍඒඅൾ Northrop Grumman, Fluor Corporation, and the Walt Disney Company were among the organizations represented when Bosco Tech alumni working in engineering and science-related professions returned to their alma mater to commemorate National Engineers Week. The special guests spoke on topics as diverse as materials engineering to amusement park ride development. Many talked about how their Bosco Tech education prepared them for industry, both through material covered and through instilling in them a strong work ethic. Current students had the opportunity to ask questions about our guests’ companies, career pathways, and university course work. Students event got to experiment with advanced neuro stimulation equipment like that used in biotech laboratories.

On February 20, the Tech’s Youth Ministry team gathered together in Anaheim to experience Youth Day. Youth Day is an annual retreat that many students from all over the Los Angeles and Orange Counties attend to strengthen their relationship with God and to celebrate Mass with thousands of other kids. As a young Catholic, sometimes I find it hard to unite with my Catholic identity and understand that my faith is not alone in this new generation, but when I attend Youth Day each year it is a nice reminder of the sheer magnitude of kids that make up the Church. Almost all retreats have Mass, but to be able to see hundreds of lights sway to songs during the Concluding Rites, it inspires me to truly live my faith openly, equipped with the memory of all those standing with me as witnesses to Christ. This year was no let down, with the theme of “20/20 Through God’s Eyes,” it was enlightening to the fact that as God’s children, we are perfect and loved as we are and as much as we don’t like to admit it, it is eternally true. The skits and speakers affirmed this by using personal experiences and fictional situations to drive the theme. I urge all Catholic youth to attend Youth Day, whether it be with your parish or with Bosco Tech, this retreat is one that all should experience!

Yඈඎඇ඀ Sർංൾඇඍංඌඍඌ Rൾඉඋൾඌൾඇඍ Tൾർඁ ൺඍ Sർංൾඇർൾ Oඅඒආඉංൺൽ Kudos to Bosco Tech’s pioneering Science Olympiad team who competed for the first time at the LA Regionals at Rio Hondo College on Feb. 22! The team of Owen Lin, Yifan Zang, Haonan (Henry) He, Hanyu (Peter) Song, and Kolin Xu participated in 12 of the 20 events, and did especially well in the Boomilever, Chemistry Lab, and Sound of Music events. “I'm really proud of our guys for competing and putting on a good showing,” said Mr. Jack Aldrich, Tech physics instructor. “None of us had any prior experience with Science Olympiad, but we did really well considering the size of our team and the fact that it was our first time participating. I think this sets a good foundation for Bosco Tech to build an even better Science Olympiad team in the future.”

This year's topic was "Are Men and Women Truly Equal Today, or are the Suffragists of 1920 still Suffering in 2020?”

Aඅඎආඇං Pඋൾඌൾඇඍൾൽ 50ඍඁ Aඇඇංඏൾඋඌൺඋඒ Gඈඅൽൾඇ Dංඉඅඈආൺඌ In recognition of the fiftieth anniversary of their graduation from Bosco Tech, the school community welcomed the esteemed alumni from the class of 1969 back to campus on January 31. The alumni celebrated the Feast Day of St. John Bosco with the student body at Mass. Student Ambassadors escorted the alumni across campus and to the lunch reception after Mass. Principal Memo Gutierrez introduced the alumni to the current campus community and Fr. Chinh Nguyen, the Tech’s Salesian Directory, presented them each with their Golden Diploma to recognize the milestone.

Sං඀ඇංඇ඀ Dൺඒ ൿඈඋ Tൾർඁ Aඍඁඅൾඍൾ Congratulations to Tech senior Ray Garcia (ACE ‘20) who signed a letter of intent to attend Menlo College, a private school in Atherton, California, and play on the school’s baseball team. Ray, a varsity pitcher and center fielder, plans to major in sports management when he begins his post-secondary studies in the Fall. The baseball star has made first and second team all-league and was named Defensive Player of the Year twice. While at the Tech, he also played basketball, and distinguished himself as senior class president, vice president of the Letterman Society, and has been regularly named on the honor roll. “We’re so proud of Ray and excited to see what the future holds for him,” said Principal Jeff Krynen. “He is an exemplary young man who has applied himself in all areas. He has trained extremely hard for this opportunity. A strong student and gifted athlete, we know he will go very far!”

Kඈඇඇංർඁංඐൺ! Jൺඉൺඇൾඌൾ Cඅൺඌඌൾඌ Hඈඌඍ Sඉൾർංൺඅ Gඎൾඌඍඌ Domo arigato to our friends from Oki Gakuen High School in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan! A large student group toured our campus on February 11, spending the day with new friends from the Tech's Japanese Language classes. Twenty-eight students and their adult chaperons visited our school. In the morning they toured the campus and attended classes with Tech students. Our young hosts explained their tech classes in Japanese, before enjoying a group luncheon with a tea ceremony and traditional Japanese dancing.

This new event is led by our own Board of Trustee member Bishop David O’Connell and his loyal support group, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick. We are blessed to collaborate with them in efforts to help our young men get much needed tuition assistance. You can wear casual clothes or your favorite St. Paddy’s outfit and have a great evening with old and new friends. The event will focus on raising scholarship funds for Bosco Tech students in need of Tuition Assistance. Who are the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick? In 2011, a few lads from the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, that distinguished Society of Irishmen and wouldbe Irishmen, decided to host a fundraiser for St. Michael’s School that was truer to their sense of what being Irish means. The event would dismiss the black tie and sophisticated ambiance of the Friendly Sons. Instead they would gather in an informal atmosphere to eat, tell stories, listen to good music and jokes, and raise a glass or two. Tom Rowan and Bishop David O'Connell (former pastor of St. Michael's) are the ringleaders of these well-intentioned rogues dubbed the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick. Although they are called the Unfriendly Sons, they are in fact quite friendly. Everyone interested in attending this event and supporting Bosco Tech is most welcome. Annual Heritage Festival The award winning DBTI Symphonic Band is hard at work rehearsing for the upcoming competition in the 2020 Heritage Festival in Boston, MA, April 16 through April 21, 2020. Last year the band brought home two Gold Awards for their performances. Join us in wishing our boys the best of luck on their upcoming trip! Jazz Night Out The DBTI Jazz Band is working extra hours at rehearsal to present Latin Jazz Night Out, Friday May 1, 2020, at 6:00 p.m. in Tech Hall. This will be a fun-filled night with amazing music and fun. Save the date! Spring Concert The DBTI Concert Band and the Music Appreciation Class will be performing at the annual Spring Concert on Friday May 15, 2020. More information about the Spring Concert will become available in the coming weeks.

The Lenten season is a special time at Bosco Tech. It begins the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday with two days of reconciliation services to prepare the boys for this sacred season. Each theology class goes to the chapel where the Gospel is read, a short Lenten video is shown, a short homily on the gospel’s theme of repentance is shared, and students are given the opportunity to start preparing for Easter by the individual reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Those who are not Catholic do not receive the sacrament, but they are definitely not excluded, as they can seek spiritual guidance from a priest, if they choose. Ash Wednesday is the official start of the Lenten season, and we had a student body Mass to mark the occasion. During the Mass, the distribution of blessed ashes in the form of a cross is its unique feature. The students were reminded in a very moving way that their life on earth is transitory, as they will eventually return into the dust of the earth from which they originated. All students, whether Catholic or not, were welcome to receive the ashes. Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent are days in which no meat may be eaten by Catholics, and our cafeteria helps the boys to comply by not serving meat on those days. During Lent, students are especially invited to attend daily Mass in the chapel, starting at 7:25 a.m., and ending in time for their first class. Seniors and some juniors also attend the Kairos four-day retreat at a ranch north of San Diego from March 31 to April 3, the week before Holy Week and Easter. Finally, our Easter preparation ends with a student body Lenten prayer service on Holy Thursday, the day before Good Friday and the start of our four-day Easter break.

Dඈඇൺඍංඈඇඌ ൿඈඋ Gൺඅൺ Eൺඋඇ Dඈඎൻඅൾ Sൾඋඏංർൾ Hඈඎඋඌ! Bosco Tech’s annual Black and Gold Gala – “Evening Under The Stars” will be taking place on Saturday, April 6. The Development team and our wonderful volunteers have been working extremely hard to make this the most successful fundraiser to date. Proceeds will be benefitting students receiving financial assistance. Will you please consider donating goods or services? We need printed materials, floral centerpieces, decorations, etc. We also need items for the silent and live auctions. Donated items may include: - Gift cards - Theme park passes - Sporting tickets/equipment - Gift baskets - Store certificates - Travel certificates/time shares As you may know, donations qualify as part of the required parent service hours (excluding bingo hours). Donations will earn service hour credit at the rate of two hours for each minimum $35 value gift. So double your service hours, by supporting our students. All credit recovery courses must be cleared by May 8 at 4:00 p.m. Seniors who are making up classes must submit completed course‐ work and final transcripts to Mr. Ronan in the Registrar’s Oﬃce. Failure to do so will result in the loss of gradua on privileges.

Thursday, May 28 ‐ Gradua on Rehearsal  Distribu on of Caps, Gowns, and Gradua on Tickets—8:00 a.m. Seniors must report to Tech hall by 8:00 a.m. to pick up their caps, gowns, and ckets. Lං඀ඁඍඌ, Cൺආൾඋൺ, Aർඍංඈඇ—2020 Gඋൺൽඎൺඍංඈඇ Vංൽൾඈ A DVD of the Class of 2020’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available. The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas. This is an opportunity to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many friends that have played an important part in his life over the last four years. At graduation, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video prior to the day, parents are invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire Class of 2020. The cost of each video is $35 (tax included).
