Congratulations, Bosco Tech Class of 2022 (then & now)

M P Dear Bosco Tech Family— As we near the end of the 2021-2022 school year, the sense of anticipation is rising among our students. There are only a few days left until summer and, for our seniors, graduation!

Looking back on the past 10 months, I feel grateful for our Tech community—for our dedicated faculty and staff, our involved Tech families, and our diligent students who made the most of being on campus this year, achieving, learning, thriving! While the year was not without challenges, the feeling of community was palpable.

Please join me in praying blessings upon our soon-to-be graduates, the Class of 2022, each of whom has earned acceptances to colleges and universities across the country. May both the Salesian brotherhood and the lessons of the past four years stay with them and stand by them throughout their postsecondary studies and their lives. And may they understand that they now take their place among an esteemed group of Techmen alumni! This unique camaraderie was evident at the recent memorial for our own Br. John Rasor SDB, an iconic alumnus and long-time instructor. Alumni from different decades united to pay tribute to one of their own and many remarked on the positive, lasting influence the Tech, and instructors like Br. John, have had upon their lives!

As our seniors look toward their new journey in the fall, many of our juniors soon will be starting coveted summer internships with respected STEM, legal and business-based companies and organizations throughout the L.A. area. I am certain that the practical experience they gain will serve them well when they return to the classroom in the fall, providing applications to theoretical lessons and lab work. We will keep you posted about their progress; please be sure to follow Bosco Tech on social media for spotlights on our enthusiastic interns.

Things will not be quiet on campus this summer, by any measure; in addition to traditional summer school classes, we will welcome both our Summer Scholars, inquisitive rising sixth through eighth graders, and our incoming ninth graders—the Class of 2026—through the Freshman Summer Program. I trust that both groups’ introductions to what the Tech offers will make a lasting impact upon them. Additionally, our traditional summer sports training campus will provide an outlet for students and keep them on top of their game.

I wish you and your family a restful summer and some well deserved quality time with your loved ones.

E-S! A Q N L % Congratulations to Tech junior Brandon Bocanegra who represented the Tech at the national level in eSports when he qualified in the first ever Madden PlayVS Cup, a 64-person single elimination tournament.

Making it all the way to the finals, a battle of California State Champ versus California State Champ, both Brandon and his opponent were state winners in either the Fall or Spring semester of this academic year.

It was a close run, with Brandon narrowly missing the top spot, and we’re all incredibly proud of him for bringing it on behalf of the Tech!

S N T A Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.

This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. The award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.

This year’s valedictorian honors have been awarded to seniors Brenton Dunn (CSEE ’22) and Aman Kumar (CSEE ’22). The graduating seniors will serve as co-valedictorians because of nearly identical outstanding grade point averages. Angel Patricio has earned Salutatorian honors.

“We’re incredibly proud of Brenton, Aman, and Patricio, as we are of the entire graduating class,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “It was impossible to select one valedictorian over the other. The hard work, accomplishment, and overall outstanding citizenship of the two make them perfect candidates to address their class and their family members.”

Brenton will attend UC San Diego and Aman will attend USC; both plan to major in Computer Science.

Angel will be studying Mathematics at MIT. Congratulations to these exemplary students!

As Bosco Tech’s class of 2022 prepares to graduate, Tech juniors are gearing up for prestigious summer internships at well-known organizations throughout Los Angeles. Please see the senior details for information and rules for safe social distancing measures. Each graduate will be given 12 tickets; they themselves do not need a ticket. The event will be livestreamed for extended family and friends to watch.

We recently shared the good news about Tech senior Aman Kumar (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering ‘22) who earned the prestigious title of National Merit® Scholarship Finalist. With only 221 finalists named in California--one of the most difficult states in which to qualify-Aman’s recognition is well deserving of recognition!

Now, we’re following up with even more good news: Aman has been selected a winner of the highly selective National Merit Scholarship, underwritten

by National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Recipients were chosen from 15,000 finalists in the 2022 National Scholarship Program.

Aman is the Class of 2022’s co-valedictorian, sharing the honors with graduating senior Brenton Dunn. Aman will attend USC this fall, majoring in Computer Science.

Tech junior David Ceballos (Computer Science and Electrical Engineering ‘23) has been accepted to the prestigious Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation Summer Fellows Program. Students are accepted on a merit basis for this competitive program designed to encourage high school juniors and seniors to explore careers in the field of biomedical science.

Starting in mid-June, David will spend eight weeks participating in a virtual curriculum featuring lectures and presentations by the institute’s world-renowned faculty. He’ll have the opportunity to participate in study groups in a mentored research project, culminating in a presentation to peers, family, and the research community. Research areas will include cancer, cardiology, neonatology, neurology, and pulmonary rehabilitation. Oh, and David's also doing a separate summer internship in coding with SoZango Solutions/Flex Together! Congratulations to David!

On April 27 at St. Paul’s HS, 18 distance runners, three hurdlers, and three throwers qualified for league finals. At this event, team members earned a number of ribbons for JV, and many medals/Camino Real patches for varsity as well as some new PRs (Personal Records).

On the field, first-year junior Justin Roybal threw the discus for 104 feet 3 inches for the second best throw by a junior at Bosco during the last 10 years. He finished third and qualified for the CIF Prelims in Carpinteria. Sophomore Jake Ayala tied for second in shot put, and threw the second best shot put and discus by a sophomore in the last 10 years.

On the track, senior Wellington Hull PRed and won medals in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, missing out in qualifying for CIF in the 110 by one second. Freshman Daniel Cendejas qualified for CIF by finishing third in both the varsity 1600 and 3200 meter races, and also ran the fastest 1600 by a freshman at Bosco in the last 15 years. Junior Christian Perez won three Camino Real League championships by coming in first in the 800, 1600, & 3200 races, thus qualifying for these three events at CIF Prelims. He repeated as 800 meter champion from last year.

Our eleventh and final meet of the 2022 season was the CIF Southern Section prelims at Carpinteria HS on May 7. Three athletes of our young team were able to participate. Justin Roybal, finishing his first year as a track and field athlete, threw the discus 98 feet, 10 inches for the second best throw of his career. Christian Perez finished 10th overall in the 800 meter (0.5 mile) race, running a PR of 20:22.37. Daniel Cendejas did well in both of his races. He was the 4th fastest freshman overall in the Division 4 1600 meter race, running 4:42.15, and again, the 4th fastest freshman, running 10:16.1 in the 3200 race.

We are very proud of our young team. Most were freshmen or sophomores, many of whom were new to track and field. They certainly came a long way in the short time since they first entered the sport. We look forward to what we predict will be a very promising season next year.

The majority of them have already started conditioning for the fall cross country season. This conditioning will be in full swing during summer school followed by a week of high altitude conditioning at Big Bear. You can sign up now to start your son during the summer; this will give him a distinct advantage over those who wait until school starts to begin conditioning. Cross country, also, we predict will be an outstanding season.

Despite challenges due to COVID restrictions, our teams had a very good year due to all the student-athletes who participated while being committed to their academics. They exemplified dedication to their team, while showing a sense of responsibility, commitment, passion and dedication to Bosco Tech!

It has been great going to all the different athletic contests throughout the school year and posting our wonderful achievements on our athletic department Instagram and Twitter accounts. Our social media postings have been a great opportunity to showcase our story telling of our athletics to everyone in Southern California. I am proud of all you have accomplished!

It was an outstanding year for the Bosco Tech Athletic department and the school community! Our basketball team had another successful season, moving up one division higher and made it to the CIF Division 5AA Quarterfinals, Cross Country making to the CIF Division 4 team prelims, Football won league for the first time in 20 years, volleyball was back-to-back league champions, eSports had several finalists appearances in various games and One State CIF/PlayVS State Champion, track and field had three students qualifying for CIF prelims. The momentum carried over from last school year and keeps on growing. I am excited for the athletic department coming into this new school year!

Lastly, can I have all the seniors student-athletes to stand up? I want to say a big thank you! I have been your athletic director for the past two years and it has been a great honor to witness all of your success as a student-athlete during your time at Bosco Tech. You have continued to build the great momentum that the school has through athletics AND it was all due to your last two years of being student-athletes! Thank you and I am proud of all you have accomplished!

It’s my privilege to share wonderful data regarding the success of the student-athletes throughout this year: • During the 2021-2022 Highlights as of 5-6-22: 9 StudentAthletes on First Team ALL LEAGUE SELECTION, 17 Student-Athletes on Second Team ALL LEAGUE SELECTION, a total of 26 student-athletes making all league selection! Three Leagues MVPs (Two for Football and One for Volleyball), Three All CIF Players (One for Football and Two for Basketball), Two League Championships (Football and Volleyball), One student-athlete earning 3rd Team Basketball Pasadena Star News, One Student-athlete with Three Individual League Championships (Track & Field), 6 CIF Qualifiers (One for Cross Country and 5 for Track and Field) and Esports State Championship.

• One student-athlete committed to play Division 3 College Football: Wellington Hull. Wellington will be playing football at Beloit College located in Wisconsin.

• 2021-2022 Highlights as of 4-30-22: 7 of our 10 athletic programs made it to the playoffs this school year (Football, Cross Country, eSports (Fall), Basketball, Track & Field, eSports (Spring) and Volleyball.

R S B . J R , O B , T F F On December 23, 2021, the Bosco Tech community lost beloved Tech brother and instructor Br. John Rasor, SDB (ME '62). An influential figure for so many Techmen, Br. Rasor's dedication to the formation of so many alumni is unquestioned.

Because of the timing of the services during the Omicron COVID-19 surge, not all Techmen were able to pay their respects in-person at his funeral in January. As a result, Techmen, former classmates and students, and past colleagues and old friends gathered in the Father Penna Chapel on May 14 to remember Br. John.

Memories, fun stories, and insights into a remarkable man were shared as the Tech again paid tribute to one of our own.

M T A M U! A S The Tech brotherhood gathered once again; this time, alumni in Sunset, Seal and Huntington Beach met up in a low-key setting to swap stories and catch up. No matter where our alumni live, they all share a common, intangible bond as Techmen brothers.

C ‘22 E S Bosco Tech is incredibly proud that among the graduating class of 2022 are several Eagle Scouts, young men who have earned the highest rank attainable through the Boy Scouts of America. The Class of 2022 Eagle Scouts are: Christopher Blanco—A member of San Gabriel’s Troop 261, Christopher designed and constructed a 12' x 20' sandbox, four kneelers, and two standing trellises for San Gabriel Mission Elementary School. Through the project, he learned a lot about leading a team and being able to assign roles based on the capability of individuals. This fall, Christopher will attend Loyola Marymount University to major in mechanical engineering.

Duke Cañada—Part of Troop 620 in Hacienda Heights, Duke Canada helped the Bosco Tech Band by remodeling the storage room. This project involved moving everything out of the room, taping and tarping the room then repainting the entire room. The most valuable thing he learned from his Eagle Project is just how much work and effort it takes to plan and manage a big project. He feels that this understanding will help him later in life and especially in college. Next year he will be attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a Material Engineering major.

Jacob Guzman—Jacob is in Glendora’s Scouting Troop 483. His Eagle project was at Sandburg middle school where he and his team built a large vegetable garden that will be for the community. In the creation, Jacob used decompose granite and mulch in between large planter boxes. In the process, he learned the importance of giving back to the community, becoming resourceful, and that teamwork and hard work go a long way. Jacob will be attending Grand Canyon University in the fall, majoring in biomedical engineering.

M V F J ! F P L SV This year, Ms. Ritsuko Rowe’s Japanese classes had the opportunity to communicate with students in Japan via educational website Flipgrid.

Tech students in Japanese 1, 2, and 3 exchanged videos and messages with their new friends, providing each other with feedback on their language usage.

Ms. Rowe says that our students very much enjoyed getting responses from their contemporaries in Japan, especially from the girls!

Domo arigato for the great opportunity to learn from our peers in another culture and practice our language skills, Ms. Rowe!

Special thanks to the Tech’s Andrew Samperio, Ivan Davalos, Samuel Zendejas, and Nicolas Torre who helped build seven raised planter beds for our neighbor, Duff Language Magnet Academy's use.

After the students and Tech instructor, Mr. Michael Dandurand, constructed the planter beds in the ACE lab, Mr. Dandurand, Nicolas, Samuel, Mr. Tom Yu—who organized the project—and Samuel’s father installed them at the Duff campus. The Tech was asked to help in this way by Catalyst San Gabriel Valley, a nonprofit network of city faith leaders who support the community in very practical ways; CSG generously funded the project.
