Looking Back at The Class of 2021— Freshman Summer Program 2017

Dear Bosco Tech Family— This issue of The Gear is dedicated to the graduating class of 2021. They are a special group of fine young men who have accomplished so much in their four years at the Tech. In spite of unforeseen obstacles, they have forged ahead in their studies, extracurricular activities, and plans for the future. They will, undoubtedly, achieve great things in the coming years!

For the first time this school year, we were able to gather to celebrate our graduates at the senior award celebration. It was great to see the faces of many of our students and their families after such a long time.

Just a few days prior to that event, we hosted the Freshman Tie Ceremony where our ninth grade students were officially welcomed into the Tech family and presented with the class tie they will wear for the next three and a half years. These celebrations, all adhering to strict health and safety guidelines, were extra special at this time, after all that we’ve witnessed in the past year. We have greatly missed the ability to gather as a Tech family to celebrate our students’ achievements!

We look forward to commencement ceremonies on June 5, when we will formally graduate our seniors and bid them Godspeed as they prepare for their future. These young men have exemplified the best of Bosco Tech as they continued to thrive in a less than ideal time in the world AND made a positive impact on their community, as many of them went far, far beyond the Christian Service hours required for graduation—I am so proud of their unwavering sense of purpose!

As the opportunity to celebrate these deserving young people in person becomes more the norm, as health guidelines permit, I don’t think any of us will ever again take for granted how special and needed these moments of community truly are!

So here’s to all our students, from the Class of 2021 to the class of 2024! May your steps be directed by the Lord and may you carry on the vision of St. John Bosco to inspire and change the world for the better!

Congratulations to the Tech Tigers basketball team; the hard-working athletes won their play-off game against Lake Arrowhead’s Rim of the World High School, 53-36, on May 28.

They are now advancing to quarter finals against West Covina’s Edgewood High School on June 1! We are incredibly proud of our dedicated athletes; the entire Tech family is cheering them on!

As Bosco Tech’s class of 2021 prepares to graduate, Tech juniors are gearing up for prestigious summer internships at well-known organizations throughout Los Angeles. The eager students will work under the mentorship of engineers, architects, managers and scientists to gain practical experience in professional STEM fields. Additionally, several seniors who interned last summer have been invited to return to the companies with whom they worked last year. More internships with organizations like the American Red Cross, The Complete Athlete, and IRS Demo are the works.

Five outstanding seniors have been nominated for Bosco Tech’s Cardinal James McIntyre Award. Given in honor of the founder of Bosco Tech, the award is annually bestowed upon a senior who, in the eyes of the technology faculty, has taken the greatest advantage of the educational opportunities offered by the school. The recipient of this award has demonstrated unwavering commitment and excellence in his technological studies, and involvement in the community, while also excelling in their academic studies.

This award encompasses many aspects of a student’s life and reflects the notion that it is through growth and development as a whole person that an individual sets himself apart and pursues a path through life that will lead to spiritual, personal and professional success. The award acknowledges a student’s conviction in all these areas.

The Tech officially welcomed to the family our ninth graders, the future graduating class of 2024, at the Freshman Tie Ceremony on May 15. This is the first time the entire class has been able to congregate on campus and faculty and staff were so happy to see them!

C % Congratulations to the Tech's Varsity Volleyball team! The team defeated St. Pius X-St. Matthias to become league champions and compete in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. We commend the entire volleyball team, coaching staff and Coach Reyes for their dedication and commitment to the volleyball program during this school year! We're so incredibly proud of you!

—B H ! C" #$ B. F&'() * + A**&*- .- C" #$ B. S-"/0 Because of the pandemic, Track & Field was quite different this year: from its look with masks, few spectators, and dual meets (only two teams competed at a time), to its length with practically no preseason and five week season.

The team’s spirit, however, was great. All enjoyed getting away from sitting in front of their screens and getting outdoors with the camaraderie of their friends in a common cause. With one meet a week, most of the team’s 18 members improved their PR (personal record) in their events steadily every week. A few noteworthy achievements were sophomore Nicholas Quezada’s cutting 48 seconds off his 800 meter time, junior Wellington Hull’s 2 feet increase in his long jump, and junior shotputter J.P. Freese’s 9 feet increase in his shot put throws. Several 12 year old sophomore school records were broken by J.J. Watts (4th fastest 100 meter & 5th fastest 200 meter races) and Christian Perez (3rd fastest 400 meter race). Junior J. P. Freese threw the furthest junior shot put since 2008. Finally, at the CIF Prelims for our league, a number of athletes qualified for the May 28 finals: J.J. Watts for the 100 & 200; Christian Perez, Anthony Battaglia, Nate Madrid, Aaron Montero, Nick Quezada for the 1200 meter; Christian, Anthony and Nick for 800, Jad Aribi and Nick for 400; Wellington Hull for 110 hurdles and Wellington and Jose Alvarez for 300 hurdles. Although short and different, this season made better athletes and better characters of them all.

Be sure to join us for cross country which starts off the next school year (in what we hope will be a normal year). Cross country consists in running three-mile races over a variety of terrain. There will be summer conditioning starting Monday, May 31. As we get closer to the start of school, we will begin actual practice. The season runs until the end of November. Beginners, as well as experienced runners, are all welcome.

Dr. Peter Velázquez is Director of Analytical Development at Instil Bio, a global cell therapy company focused on the effective treatment of cancer. With facilities in England, Texas, and California, the publicly traded company’s forward-thinking motto is “Until Cancer is Cured.” As director, Dr. Velázquez leads a team of scientists in helping pave the way to novel T cell therapies targeted against advancedstage melanoma and other solid cancers which currently lack effective therapies.

With more than 25 years of experience in the biomedical field, he has trained with preeminent immunology scientists. After graduating from Bosco Tech’s Design Technology in 1992, he completed undergraduate studies in Biology at the University of California, Irvine, and earned a master’s degree in Science at Washington University School of Medicine, followed by a doctorate in Cellular and Molecular Pathology at UCLA’s Geffen School of Medicine.

Following advanced post-doctoral training at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Velázquez served as a professor in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine; in that capacity, he was course co-director of Medical Microbiology for medical students and directed a discovery research lab focused on understanding regulation of T cell activation in tissue microenvironments. Concurrently, he was a professor at the University of Notre Dame where he mentored students and taught graduate-level immunology. He would later lead preclinical teams in the development of cancer therapies as a scientist at Amgen and, oversee analytical scientists in the field of non-autologous T cell therapies while at Atara Biotherapeutics.

The recipient of numerous research grants and fellowships, Dr. Velázquez has been published in several leading medical journals and publications. Married to his beautiful wife, Cynthia, and the father of two inspirational children who are full of life, he enjoys the occasional jog, bike ride or hike in the Santa Monica mountains.

He offers a simple piece of advice to the graduating class of 2021: live selflessly, follow your passion, and do not be afraid of failure so long as you are ready to learn from it.

H This year’s valedictorian honors have been awarded to seniors Nathan Chao (CSEE) and Jericoh Santiago (MAT); the graduating seniors will serve as co-valedictorians because of nearly identical outstanding grade point averages.

“We’re incredibly proud of Nathan and Jericoh, as we are of the entire graduating class,” said Tech Principal Jeff Krynen. “It was impossible to select one over the other. The hard work, accomplishment, and overall outstanding citizenship of the two make them perfect candidates to address their class and their family members.”

Nathan will major in Computer Engineering at UC San Diego and Santiago will begin studies in accounting at USC this fall. Congratulations to both exemplary students!

Bosco Tech is incredibly proud that among the graduating class of 2021 are several Eagle Scouts, young men who have earned the highest rank attainable through the Boy Scouts of America. The Class of 2021 Eagle Scouts are: Diego Alvarez (MSET ‘21) is a member of Troop 476, affiliated with Montebello’s St. Benedict Church. For his Eagle Scout project, Diego renovated the Tech’s Parent Council room, located behind the 500 academic building. As part of his overall efforts, Diego raised materials funds with help from the Parent Council and a GoFundMe page. He was assisted by several fellow scouts and current Tech students.

Refugio Cervantes (MSET ‘21) is a member of Whittier’s Troop 688.

For his project, he and fellow troop members repainted parking lot lines at St. Gregory the Great, Refugio’s parish, and installing a handicapped spot in the process. He says the project taught him how to lead others effectively, and how to logistically plan a detailed project of this scope.

Nathanael DeBerry (ACE ‘21) organized a food drive for Uplandarea families struggling because of COVID. His efforts resulted in 400 homes receiving much-needed bags of groceries. Through Scouting, he has learned to finish what he starts and that no one can take away from what is in your head.

Anthony Franco (MAT ‘21) is a Life Scout, in the process of completing his Eagle Scout. He recently completed Phase 1 of his Eagle Project at Santa Teresita, an elementary school in Los Angeles. With the help of other Tech and alumni, Anthony renovated and updated the school’s lunch area.

Kevyn A. Gonzales (IDEA ‘21) belongs to Covina’s Troop 448. For his Eagle Scout Project, he distributed 50 backpacks filled with school supplies for children unable to purchase the materials. Kevyn worked with Shepherd’s Pantry, an outreach ministry in Glendora to hand out the filled backpacks. He says Scouting has broadened his horizons!

Dillon Manvelian (MAT ‘21) is an Eagle Scout with Troop 620 in Hacienda Heights. For his Eagle Project, he worked closed with the Glendora Community Conservancy to reforest the Santa Fe Dam, home to several native plants and animals. He and his team planted and individually staked and fenced 150 native oak trees! He says that Scouting has taught him time management and that is prepared you to overcome a multitude of obstacles.

Aaron Montero (ACE ‘21) s a member of Montebello’s Troop 476, based at St. Benedict Parish. For his project, Aaron created a banner stand that’s portable and easy to assemble for Hearts of Compassion Food Bank. He says Scouting has taught him how to be a strong leader, as well as an active member of society.

Joseph Perez (MSET ‘21) Joseph is a member of Covina’s Troop 448.

For his project, he refurbished and enhanced a memorial garden at Merced Elementary School in West Covina that had fallen in to disrepair. He says that the best thing Scouting has taught him is that “When people work together, grat things can be accomplished.”

Bosco Tech Class of 2021 We asked our graduating seniors to tell us a little about their future plans, also their favorite memories of the past four years, and what they’ll take with them from Bosco Tech. Here’s what those who responded shared:

Vance Acuna (ACE) Plans, college and major: Pasadena City College, Kinesiology Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco Tech is winning my last high school football game. One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing that I will take away from my high school experience is that hard work pays off .

Sergio M. Aguilar (ACE) Plans, college and major: Cal State, Los Angeles, Civil Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite moment was when we did jousting match with two rolling chairs and two crutches. One thing you will take with you from high school: The ability to time manage and schedule to make sure that things get done.

Christian Alarcon (MSET) Plans, college and major: Cal State, Long Beach, Material Science Favorite Bosco Tech memory: All the great people I met. One thing you will take with you from high school: My education in material science.

Angel Almaraz-Meza (MAT) Plans, college and major: Cal State, Los Angeles, English Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory has to be going out to the Galapagos with current Bosco Alumni and Mr. Stolz. I had the amazing opportunity to travel outside of my country as a sophomore, and I'll never forget the hilarious times had out there. One thing you will take with you from high school: I learned how to stay true to myself in high school, and I will keep this close to my heart for the rest of my life.

Diego Alexandro Alvarez (MSET) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly, Pomona, Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory has to be the music program's trip to Nashville Tennessee to compete in the World Strides Heritage Festival. We won multiple awards and all of the students involved had a great time. One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing that I will take with me from Bosco is all of the connections I have made over the past four years. I hope to stay in touch with most of my friends throughout college and adulthood.

It was a totally new experience and I feel that helped me really get to know my fellow classmates the best. We all got to let loose and really have fun and get to know each other better accepting that we will all be friends for the next four years. We set up the pool to test the buoyancy of the boat that will be used for the Solar Cup competition. I remember it taking forever as most of time was goofing around in the pool and spraying water amongst the team. Favorite Bosco Tech memory: During my internship at Boeing Satellite Systems, I was able to work with the WGS Anti-Jamming System Integration and Test team to develop Java Software. This internship helped me solidify my passion for computer science and taught me countless skills. One thing you will take with you from high school: While at Bosco I understood the important of working with other and collaborating effectively with fellow team members. This is something that is extremely valuable in the field and I hope to take it with me.

Despite being the only freshman, I had tons of fun with the upper classmen as well as with Rowe-sensei and Mr. Ortiz. I may have spent way too much money in arcades, and a lot of crazy stuff happened during the trip, but it's something I'll hold for a lifetime.

One thing you will take with you from high school: Definitely the friends I've made along the way. Although I couldn't make many more this past year, I've created new ones in past years and have deepened and improved ones from before I attended Bosco.

It’s a brand new tradition we started if it’s your birthday you should bring cake or some snacks to celebrate with everyone in IDEA. This was a fun tradition to start and it was nice to have some cake during certain periods in our high school years. One thing you will take with you from high school: I would take the same mentality to strive for better from high school into college. I wasn’t motivated to do anything at first, but later on, I had the urge to do something better that would benefit me later on it life. If I can operate the same way I’m doing it here at Bosco, I think college will be easier for me.

It was really amazing to see such a huge variety of artwork, every piece there was interesting in their own rights. One thing you will take with you from high school: It's surprising how much can happen within the four years of high school that I've become a part of. The faculty, staff, and my fellow classmates have all really made impression on me and have made apparent the beliefs of Bosco Tech's "Home, School, Church, and Playground" motto. Anthony Isaiah Razo (MSET) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly, Pomona, Manufacturing Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My trip to Nashville with the band was one of the most memorable moments at Bosco. Being able to be in a travel group with my friends, staying up all night, traveling throughout the city, and trying the new foods was amazing. I was also given the ability to visit my family from Nashville and they were able to see me perform. One thing you will take with you from high school: The ability to network was one of the biggest things I have learned at Bosco. Bosco provided me the ability to step out of my shell and talk to people. From talking to my teachers and fellow students, I have made great relationships that I will cherish.

Registration for the Tech's popular Summer Scholar program will soon be available through the school's FACTS family portal; new users will be prompted to create an account.

This year, the hands-on exploration program, tailored to seventh to eighth grade boys, is available in both a virtual and an in-person format. The five-week program runs June 21-July 23.
