Freshman Summer Program 2016— Looking Back at The Class of 2020!

Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Dear Bosco Tech family— This issue of The Gear is dedicated to the graduating class of 2020, exemplary young men who have accomplished so much in their four years at the Tech and who will, undoubtedly, achieve great things in the coming years!

While the ending of your high school career did not go as anyone anticipated, it does not diminish the goals you already have reached in your educational, spiritual and personal lives. Your class will be remembered for the unique gifts you brought to our campus community, what you worked so hard on while you were here, the relationships you formed with classmates and instructors, and the plans you have formed for yourselves.

It is my hope that you will feel justifiably proud of your achievements and, as you look to the future, know that you are prepared to overcome life’s challenges. Stay true to all you’ve been taught, and remember the many people who are behind you, cheering you on and willing to help, should you need us!

So here’s to you, Class of 2020! May your steps be directed by the Lord and may you carry on the vision of our founder, St. John Bosco, to inspire and change the world for the better!

Know that you remain in our thoughts and prayers. Please visit the campus often and keep us up to date on the things you accomplish and the dreams that become reality.

Please know that we will always consider you part of the Bosco Tech family. We want to hear from you and to rejoice with you over your future successes.

In the same way, we want to continue to share the good things that are happening on campus and the achievements of your Tech family by including you in our electronic news mailings. That way, the experiences of the Bosco Tech family will reach you , keeping you up to date about events that may interest you and news about current students, faculty and alumni like yourself.

Sඉൾർංൺඅ Dൾඅංඏൾඋඒ—Sൾඇංඈඋ Yൺඋൽ Sං඀ඇඌ Hൺඇൽ Dൾඅංඏൾඋൾൽ Bosco Tech faculty and staff delivered to each surprised senior a yard sign to commemorate their graduation. In addition to the colorful signs, each graduate received a protective face shield designed and created by their classmates (who also made and distributed more than 1,000 to local health care professionals and those in Catholic ministries that help the public.)

The yard signs are now being proudly displayed wherever Tech seniors live! We love and miss you, Class of 2020!

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Amir Abujaber (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Go to Pasadena City College for my general ed and transfer in to a four-year college, and follow my passion; undeclared major Favorite Bosco Tech memory: All the times friends and I did some stupid, but hilarious stuff. One thing you will take with you from high school: Do it right the first time.

Adhikari, Aman (CSEE) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona, Computer Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Driving out the parking lot. One thing you will take with you from high school: Many lessons and friends.

David Aguilar (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Not sure which college, but so far, Woodbury University; Film Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My one favorite memory was hanging out with friends in a jacuzzi listening to Beatles, looking at the stars One thing you will take with you from high school: Memories Grant Alaniz (ACE) Plans, college and major: To join CAL-FIRE’s Air Operations and join Marine Corp Reserves, Mt. SAC; Fire Science Favorite Bosco Tech memory: I wouldn’t say I have one memory in particular, but I’d say that my Top 2 favorite memories would be when I played at Mr. Almanza’s winter concert and when I went to my first Cross Country race. One thing you will take with you from high school: There are two things that I will take from high school and they are that no matter who the person is or where they are from, if you treat them nicely and take the time to get to know them, you can be brothers for life, and, as Mr. Plantillas says, to do the right thing when no one is watching and that it takes courage to do the right thing.

Francisco Almaraz (ACE) Plans, college and major: Going to Rio Hondo College and transferring out to a UC; Construction Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Teachers were always determined to not let anyone fall behind. Being with my friends every day and creating a nice bond with each other, almost like family. One thing you will take with you from high school: Good habits and being a responsible person and most of all, respect.

Sassan Almasian (MSET) Plans, college and major: Still working on it! Favorite Bosco Tech memory: There were many! One thing you will take with you from high school: Me! Adrian Alvarado (MAT) Plans, college and major: Attend college and travel, Cal Poly Pomona; Medical Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory that I had from Bosco was the Kairos because I grew to understand my friends that I consider family. One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing that I will take from Bosco is the brotherhood and the many endless memories that I made with my friends.

Alfredo Angel (MAT) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona; Business Administration One thing you will take with you from high school: I’m going to take the advice from the teacher and my peers, as well as the skills I learned in my technology. After college, I want to get a better job!

Nicholas Antuna (IDEA) Plans, college and major: College, Woodbury University; Psychology On-campus activities: Team Manager for Volleyball and member of the Red Cross team Favorite Bosco Tech memory: The school dances were always my favorite. One thing you will take with you from high school: I’ll hopefully always have my friends with me.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Jacob Armas (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Work for my dad until the start of college, and start to get more independent, Cal State, LA; Animation Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Going to Kairos One thing you will take with you from high school: What I learned about music and becoming a better artist Berndien Kendrick Balangauan (MSET) Plans, college and major: Get a good job and live a happy life, Azusa Pacific University; Allied Health (Pre-Med) Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Hanging out and joking around with the boys. One thing you will take with you from high school: Memories and lessons throughout the four years.

Jaden Ballester (MAT) Plans, college and major: To go to Rio Hondo College and transfer to a four-year university; Business Administration Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory was when we chose the trashcan in front of Tech Hall as the designated eating area for the class. One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing that I will take with me is to just be a nice person. We must except everyone for who they are and offer up our kindness. Not everyone is perfect and neither are we so we should look at everyone as our Salesian friends and family.

Raymond Barraza (ACE) Plans, college and major: Cal State, L.A.; Civil Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Tech Games One thing you will take with you from high school: Friends Christian Becerra (IDEA) Plans, college and major: To attend and graduate from a 4-year university and find a job to start my career path, Woodbury University; Architecture Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Participating in the Big Brother Retreat in the summer. It was fun to hang out with friends in a retreat experience while welcoming the incoming freshmen. One thing you will take with you from high school: The new friendships I've formed over the years at Bosco and getting the chance to meet new people.

Jesse Becerra (IDEA) Plans after high school: Going to college; undetermined college and major at this time. Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Walking into Bosco as a student, but being mistaken as a parent One thing you will take with you from high school: The understatement of brotherhood. Perseverance of hard work and never giving up on your dreams.

Jerardo Beltran (MAT) Plans, college and major: UC San Diego; General Biology Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Making it to the Quarter Finals of CIF in volleyball during my junior year. Also, all the bus rides to and from volleyball and soccer games. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will for sure bring with me all the memories and friendships I have formed over the past few years.

Joshua Bogust (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona; Chemical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco was during junior year when we were play a review game in chemistry and it was getting chaotic and funny. It was the final question and everyone ran to get the chair and it basically became a dog pile. While that was happening, Ray wanted to record it, but he ended up breaking his phone in the process. One thing you will take with you from high school: Something I’ll take with me is the brotherhood that was created here at Bosco.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Christian Boyd (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona; Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory were the techs. They were not only fun, but prepared me for my future career. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will not only take the knowledge I learned, but also the fun times I had with my friends and teachers at Bosco.

Andrew Caballes (MAT) Plans, college and major: To join Army ROTC and continue my education in preparation to transfer to a university; Long Beach City College; Kinesiology Exercise Science Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory during my four years were the growing relationships that I will cherish with my brothers and faculty members. One thing you will take with you from high school: Besides the oratory, memories, and experiences the Bosco brotherhood and family gave to me, I will never give up.

Eric Cabato (MAT) Plans, college and major: To prepare for college, which also means finally getting my driver’s license, University of New Mexico; Entertainment Design Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Hanging out with my friends tossing water bottles up on top the roof of the classroom buildings. (We picked them up back up after.) One thing you will take with you from high school: I love all my friends that I got from there, and I hope that even if I’m going far away from them, I can meet with them through other means whenever I can.

Wenyang Cao (IDEA) Plans, college and major: U Miami; Psychology Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Hanging out with my friends and study hard, play hard. One thing you will take with you from high school: Do the right thing when no one's watching and work hard, play hard.

Nicolas Carranza (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Woodbury University, Animation Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Attending Kairos 90 One thing you will take with you from high school: I will take all the skills I've learned, and the memories of my friends and great teachers who taught me more about who I am and what I like to do.

Costas Castillo (ACE) Plans, college and major: Go to college, undetermined at this time; Architecture Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory during my four years at Bosco Tech would have to be the time I scored a hat trick against Cantwell. It was the last minute of the game and we were tied up 2-2, we get a free kick outside the box and I step up to take it, kicked it right over the wall, hit the crossbar and in, we win and I get my first hat trick. This was a very special moment for me because this hat trick lead me to go ahead and receive my first 1st team All-League award. One thing you will take with you from high school: After Bosco Tech I will always remember the brotherhood and friendships I had at Bosco Tech. Just being ourselves, having a good time and not worrying about what other people have to say.

Ryan Cayer (MSET) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly, Pomona; Biotechnology Favorite Bosco Tech memory: The time I was asked to homecoming at one of the dances. One thing you will take with you from high school: Hopefully the friendships I’ve made and my diploma.

Oscar Cendejas (CSEE) Plans, college and major: Graduate college, college and major undetermined at this time Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory was when ASB had a fundraiser selling strips of duct tape to tape Mr. Plantillas to the wall. One thing you will take with you from high school: I think the most important thing I learned from Bosco is that you never stop learning. Have an open mind and heart.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Julio Cesar Contreras (CSEE) Plans, college and major: Attend the Kellogg Honors College at Cal Poly Pomona, Computer Science Favorite Bosco Tech memory: On a rainy day in my junior year, I remember grabbing a coffee from the nearby 7-Eleven to heat myself up while waiting for the bus. When the bus drove me to the bus stop near my apartment building, I saw an old man walking the same direction as me and offered for him to walk under my umbrella with me as he only had a hoodie on. Despite us walking together, I gave him the most space under the umbrella and got extremely soaked, but I didn’t mind; a bit of an odd “favorite memory” and it’s not really connected to Bosco, but I remember being so at peace and free from stress at that moment that I can’t choose any other memory. One thing you will take with you from high school: The friendships I’ve built so far and will continue to keep as I move on in life (especially with those who are going to the same college as me).

Runze Dai (ACE) Plans, college and major: University Of Miami; undeclared major Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Brotherly love One thing you will take with you from high school: Nothing; I’m on to college!

Aaron De Castro (CSEE) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona, Computer Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory during my four years at Bosco was simply being able to be with all the other guys, my brothers, throughout these 4 years. We had moments of both joy and disappointment, but the fact that we went through it all together was most important. I'll always hold those memories close. One thing you will take with you from high school: Definitely taking all the close friendships I've made at Bosco with me to college, but tooooottally not because we're all going to the same college. Definitely not!

Cristian Figueroa (MAT) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly Pomona, Business Marketing Favorite memory: Hanging out at the senior trash can in front of Tech hall during lunch. One thing you will take with you from high school: Time goes by fast.

George Flores Jr. (CSEE) Plans, college and major: I plan to go straight to college and begin seeking out internships at aerospace companies, UC Berkeley; Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco was my Freshman Salesian Retreat. There is nothing like the feeling of meeting a bunch of new people and greatly anticipating what the next four years will bring. It is hard to believe how fast the time has gone by. One thing you will take with you from high school: The most important lesson I learned at Bosco was to take initiative.

DJing the dances are some of my fondest memories and I would have never been able to do so if I hadn't volunteered to do it the first time even though I had no prior experience.

Ryan Flores (MAT) Plans, college and major: Go to Citrus Community College and get a job in my free time, study Water Technology Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Probably our playoff run in baseball when we made it to the quarter finals and I knocked a kid out at the plate when he tried to score One thing you will take with you from high school: How to get away with things!

Damon Florez (MSET) Plans, college and major: Arizona State; Materials Science Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Traveling for lacrosse to away games One thing you will take with you from high school: I will take my knowledge from MSET to college..

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Adam Galaviz (MAT) Plans, college and major: Marymount California University; Graphic Design Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco Tech was when my friends and I were filming a project for MAT on the football field. We had to film a lot of action shots of sports and we just had a really good time. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will take what Mr. Plantillas said about integrity which is doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

Timothy Galvan (MSET) Plans, college and major: I plan to graduate from a university, do some internships, and Air Force ROTC, Cal Poly Pomona; Aerospace Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory during my four years at Bosco Tech was being a part of a tech and participating in the spirit games. One thing you will take with you from high school: The one thing I will take with me from high school is a sense of character.

Raymond Garcia (ACE) Plans, college and major: Play Baseball at Menlo College; Sports Management Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco was when our 20182019 baseball team made it to the quarter finals—for the first time since 1960 One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing I will take from high school, is if you have a goal in life, don't let anybody tell you that you can’t achieve that goal!

Lorenzo Gaytan (MAT) Plans, college and major: Going to college, find my footing in the film industry, and giving back to the industry that I love so much, Woodbury University; Film Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memories that I have at school are usually the ones with my friends, or at dances. The people really were the best part about my whole high school experience, all the crazy things we did, the bonds we formed, I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world. One thing you will take with you from high school: The things I learned in my technology, and all the life lessons teachers have taught me, especially at Kairos. The teachers instilled a lot of wisdom down onto us students, and for that I have to say thank you because without them, none of this is possible.

Noah Goitia-Armour (ACE) Plans, college and major: Still working on it! Favorite Bosco Tech memory: There were many! One thing you will take with you from high school: Me! Enrique Gomez (MAT) Plans, college and major: I will be attending California State University, Los Angeles in their Honors College program; Film, Television, and Media Studies Favorite Bosco Tech memory: I was definitely glad to have been a part of Kairos 90. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will definitely remember and cherish each of the amazing moments I was able to spend with my closest friends and teachers, as well as the valuable lessons that have allowed me to become the hardworking young man I am today.

Gabriel Gonzalez (CSEE) Plans, college and major: Cal Poly, Pomona; Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Spending time with friends One thing you will take with you from high school: Brotherhood Pablo Govea (ACE) Plans, college and major: Grand Canyon University; Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Being able to build things in ACE my freshman year. One thing you will take with you from high school: Hanging out with my friends.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Brian Gyotoku (ACE) Plans, college and major: Rio Hondo Community College; Business Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Lunches by trash can where everyone ate. Something happened almost everyday. One thing you will take with you from high school: Patience. Respect. Maturity.

Haonan He (MSET) Plans, college and major: UC San Diego; Chemical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Doing AP Chemistry music project One thing you will take with you from high school: Engineering Mindset---being able to apply what we learned in class to solve real world problems.

Maverick Henry (IDEA) Plans, college and major: University of Arizona; Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory is spending time in IDEA. Creating projects and having so much fun, but also learning so much with every success and more importantly every failure. One thing you will take with you from high school: In my time in FRC and IDEA, I have learned how much hard work it takes to succeed in school and in any avenue I pursue. There is always more to be learned from everyone around you.

Christian Hernandez (MSET) Plans, college and major: Possibly attend Rio Hondo Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Early sophomore year was a great time. It was good to see all of the faces and friends of everyone again and be part of one large group One thing you will take with you from high school: I will remember the great times in class with awesome teachers and with friends.

Marc Hernandez (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Attending Cal State, LA; Design Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Getting to bond with my fellow brothers One thing you will take with you from high school: The thing I would take from being at Bosco is no matter what happens, your brothers are always there for you.

Joseph Huerta (MSET) Plans, college and major: University of La Verne; Business Favorite Bosco Tech memory: Coach Jones and Mr. Tiangco’s ice breakers One thing you will take with you from high school: Knowledge of my Technology to be prepared for my minor and time management skills as well as a strong work ethics.

Sergio Jimenez-Ceron (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Undetermined college at this time; Mechanical Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: I can’t choose one favorite memory, but all memories at Bosco Tech were special. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will take my knowledge of engineering with me to college.

Shengbo Cristiano Jin (ACE) Plans, college and major: UC Davis; Civil Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My best experiences are leading my club to join the Model UN at USC during my junior year, and varsity soccer. As a varsity player, it is a very big honor for my soccer career. One thing you will take with you from high school: One thing I will take with me from Bosco is the attitude toward the academics and life. To study hard and work hard will be a very good combination for my future.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Eric Jurado (MSET) Plans, college and major: USC, Pharmacology and Drug Development Favorite Bosco Tech memory: This one is hard, but probably just eating with my friends in Tech Hall. I do not know why I chose this, maybe because the last time we did eat there, we did not know it was truly our last time eating together at Tech Hall. Laughing, joking, playing around, it was truly a joyous moment. One thing you will take with you from high school: To live the fourth. At Kairos, I learned so much about myself and others, and the time there will always be treasured.

Michael Kelley (MAT) Plans after high school: I will be attending college in order to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Still deciding which college; Film Production Favorite Bosco Tech memory: My favorite memory at Bosco Tech is when I was first accepted into Media Arts and Technology (MAT). The first day of classes is where I learned about the Adobe programs. This was the start of my journey through Bosco Tech. One thing you will take with you from high school: I will take my knowledge that I have learned from my classes.

Aaron Lerma (MSET) Plans, college and major: Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University; Aerospace Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: During a spirit rally when Amir Abujaber kicked a ball across the gym and hit Eric Cabato in the head. My freshman year, I would have never expected to have accomplished everything I’ve done in the past 4 years. All it took was some extra focusing and a lot of hard work.

Between the dances or trips for football games with the band, there are a ton of favorites. However, I’d have to say that it would be the fall spirit games where CSEE came THIS close to breaking the losing streak it had for years!

One thing you will take with you from high school: I’ll definitely be taking the work ethic I learned at my time here. My abilities in managing loads of work into my personal schedule is going to be an invaluable skill I take with me.

Bosco Tech Class of 2020 Lorenzo Pedroza (CSEE) Plans, college and major: California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; Computer Engineering Favorite Bosco Tech memory: It’s hard to pinpoint one great memory since I have so many from my time at the tech—from participating in robotics to just having really fun classes. However, one in particular that really stands out is the day I got an email from the Bosco Tech internship program offering me a position as a summer intern at Boeing Satellite Systems. I was overjoyed since not only would it technically be my first job, but it would be in my dream field—aerospace—in the realm of my interests—computer science and electrical engineering—and I would finally be able to be face-to-face with real engineers and real spacecraft in a real satellite factory. One thing you will take with you from high school: Learning to be more data-driven.

I especially attribute this to my time in the robotics team. Intuition and personal experience can take you far, but when you are messing with systems that you are not very familiar with or that are entirely brand new (which can be common in engineering) (e.g. a custom robot turret), one (or several) tests are worth a thousand words—especially if you expect such a system to function reliably in the real word (in the robotics team's case, competition).

Alejandro Piña (IDEA) Plans, college and major: Attend Cal Poly Pomona; Electromechanical Engineering (CPP is the only school in CA to offer this major) Favorite Bosco Tech memory: It must have been driving the robot that I designed for the first time. One thing you will take with you from high school: The reason I chose Bosco was for the tech. I couldn't have gone to a better high school. Now I take my technical skills, knowledge, and experience from high school to develop in college.

The teachers are also very friendly to international students. They often help us when we have some questions. Messing around with my friends will be one of the moment I definitely will miss from Bosco. It is probably the most amazing experience that I will never regret doing later in the future. For physically, I will take with me in high school the amazing program I love using here at Bosco called Solidworks. I was selected by the staff to attend Kairos as a junior and become a leader for the retreat my senior year. Both times that I went I discovered more about myself and got closer with my Bosco brothers, I treasure both times and hold them close to my heart. My friends and I would usually hang out on the basketball courts and all we needed to know that he had brownies was when people were following him. By the time we got to his car there was usually at least 30-40 people waiting for a chance at getting a brownie. One thing you will take with you from high school: The one thing I will take from high school is do not be afraid to ask questions. The stupid question is the one that was never asked, because the teachers are there to help you improve.

One thing you will take with you from high school: Don't take shortcuts or try to cheat in life, it only ends up hurting you in the long run. I've learned this the hard way. Senior year was supposed to be super easy, but I got lazy and ended up paying for it at the end of each quarter and in my short acceptances list. Put the work in, it's worth it.
