ALUMNUS SPOTLIGHT NICK MANSUR (EL ’71) —2018 GRADUATION KEYNOTE SPEAKER Nick Mansur (EL ‘71) has been involved in a wide variety of technologies and applications throughout his successful career in engineering. He had the good fortune to work on the mini-computers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory that controlled and monitored unmanned spacecraft when Viking landed on Mars and Voyager launched to Jupiter; to pioneer real-time distributed process control concepts used in Naval Combat Systems at Honeywell; to design and implement the ride control system for Disneyland’s Matterhorn; and to lead the engineering team that developed Formation Flying capability for a fleet of Boeing C-17s.

Nick has spent most of his forty-three-year career in engineering management. As Vice President of Scientific Systems at Walt Disney Imagineering, he was responsible for a division of over 100 engineers and support personnel tasked to design and sustain the software that controls and monitors Disney Theme Park attractions world-wide.

As Director of Avionics and Flight Controls at Boeing, Nick led a group of 300 systems, hardware and software engineers in upgrading and enhancing the avionics and flight controls systems on the C-17 Globemaster III. Most recently, as Vice President of Engineering at AeroVironment, Nick led a group of 250 engineers and support personnel in developing small unmanned aircraft systems and electric vehicle charging equipment.

Nick holds bachelor’s degrees in both physics and mathematics from Cal Poly, Pomona, and a master’s degree in applied mathematics from UCLA. He also taught mathematics part-time at Cal Poly in the early years of his career. Nick lives in Azusa with his wife, Rosa, and consults part-time. His hobbies include physical fitness and playing guitar.

ETIQUETTE WORKSHOP FOR SUMMER INTERNSHIP CANDIDATES Bosco Tech students seeking summer internships recently learned all about business etiquette in office and dining settings, thanks to Ms. Mina Martinez, owner of Prestige Protocol, LLC. The informative seminar and semi-formal dinner covered everything the well-mannered professional needs to know in conducting themselves in the business environment. Ms. Martinez is a graduate of The Protocol School of Washington and certified as a Corporate Etiquette and International Protocol Consultant.

SUMMER INTERNS PREP FOR REAL-WORLD EXPERIENCE As Bosco Tech’s class of 2018 prepares to graduate, both juniors and seniors are gearing up for prestigious summer internships at well-known organizations throughout Los Angeles. The eager students will work under the mentorship of engineers, architects, managers and scientists to gain practical experience in professional and STEM fields. Additionally, several seniors who interned last summer have been invited to return to the companies with whom they worked last year.

CSULA COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING SUMMER OPPORTUNITY FOR 9-11 GRADES Sophomores through juniors interested in CSULA’s complimentary National Summer Transportation Institute (NSTI) are encouraged to contact Mr. Ray Chavez at rchavez@boscotech.edu for more information. Participants will study careers in transportation and aviation, explore solar powered vehicles, and experiment with flight simulators. The two-week program begins on June 18 and applications are due Friday, June 1.

ALUMNUS MEMO GUTIERREZ NAMED VICE PRESIDENT Bosco Tech has announced the appointment of Guillermo “Memo” Gutierrez, an alumnus and past principal of the school, as Vice President of Administration and Development, effective July 1. In this capacity, Mr. Gutierrez will oversee all non-academic aspects of the school’s administration and its fundraising efforts, reporting directly to the board of trustees.

“We are looking forward to Mr. Gutierrez stepping in to this position at Bosco Tech,” said Mr. William Marticorena, the school’s chairman of the board and interim head of school. “He has the uniquely beneficial perspective of both a graduate and past faculty member. His full understanding of the effective Salesian educational system, coupled with his experience in Bosco Tech’s integrated technology curriculum, makes him the perfect candidate to help the school both continue on its historically successful path, while leading it to an even higher level.”

“I'm honored and grateful for this new opportunity to serve the Tech community,” Gutierrez said. “Bosco Tech has a special place in my heart. It was instrumental in my formation as a young man and critical to my growth as an educator. I can't wait to meet and work alongside the students, families, and dedicated faculty and staff.”

Mr. Gutierrez has more than 30 years experience in teaching and high school administration. He currently is vice principal of student affairs at Bellflower’s St. John Bosco High School. From 1987 to 2001, Gutierrez taught at Bosco Tech, where he also ultimately served as principal from 2001 to 2004. He has a bachelor’s degree in history from UCLA and a master’s degree in education from Stanford University, earning his teaching credential and certification in Catholic school administration at Mount St. Mary’s College. He has served on school accreditation self-study and executive search teams and currently is executive board president of Academia Avance Charter School in Los Angeles. In his free time, Gutierrez volunteers with local literacy and nature reserve organizations.

SENIORS EARN MORE ACCOLADES & SCHOLARSHIPS We are so proud that our graduating seniors are being recognized for their impressive academic achievement. These young men have earned acceptance to, and scholarships from, leading universities across the country.

Among the most recent honors, the West San Gabriel Valley Association of REALTORS® Foundation has named senior Giovannia Samayoa (MSET) a recipient of their 2018 scholarship. Giovanni will be recognized at the Senior Awards ceremony for his selection to receive this year’s West San Gabriel Valley Association of Realtor’s Foundation scholarship award. He was presented his award at a meeting of the Foundation on May 2.

STUDENTS INTERN AT PASADENA BIOMEDICAL COLLABORATIVE Over the last several weeks, eight Bosco Tech students, plus chaperones Mr. Eric Tom and Mrs. Anne Sigoloff, participated in the Pasadena Biotech Collaborative’s Saturday Internship Work Days. The Collaborative is an bio-tech resource incubator founded in 2004 to support the growing number of life science start-ups in the Los Angeles area.

The student’s efforts resulted in the production of media plates, buffers, sterile aliquots and other supplies for Amgen Biotech Experience (ABE) kits. The kits were then delivered to local high schools and community colleges for hands-on work with DNA in curriculum aligned with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Tech juniors Adam Gomez and John Acuna were invited to return as mentors following their initial work day. Additionally, Adam’s level of commitment to the program secured him a summer internship while John and Jess Rodriguez both secured summer internships at the Oak Crest Institute of Science in Monrovia, formerly part of the Biotech Collaborative. SUMMER SCHOOL FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS Bosco Tech will offer academic enrichment and review courses, as well as sports camps, to boys and girls in the sixth to twelfth grades. Six-week high school courses begin on Monday, June 18, while five-week middle school courses begin on Monday, June 25.

High school students can earn a full year’s course credit over the summer by successfully completing accelerated classes in Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus, while students who wish to recover academic credit can choose from a wide range of offerings. Also offered are enrichment classes such as Android Apps Design, Beginning Guitar and Drawing/Illustration classes.

Middle school students can enroll in enrichment classes like Fun with Electronics & Computers or Robotics where they can build and program their own robots. Students can also participate in a hands-on laboratory science workshop, or attend cheerleading camp. Additionally, the Bosco Tech Summer Scholars program offers boys entering grades 7 and 8 a sampling of the high school’s unique projectbased STEM curriculum. Tech Scholar candidates must have a grade point average at or above 3.0.

The deadline for summer school pre-registration is June 8. Walk-in registration, on a space-available basis, will be conducted on Thursday, June 14, in the school library from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Prices vary by class level and number of classes selected. There will be a mandatory meeting on Thursday, June 14, at 6 p.m. in Tech Hall for next school year’s bingo program. Did you know that you don’t need to wait for your team’s assignment? You can sign up right now to work and support your school individually.

Sign up with a friend. It’s fun, great exercise, and you will meet our friendly group of regular players. Best of all, you are supporting the students.

The school’s popular Bingo program earns hundreds of thousands of dollars for the school every year and is run by a dedicated team of parent volunteers who need your help. MSET STUDENTS & INSTRUCTOR WIN TOP FOUNDRY AWARDS Bosco Tech students scored at the recent American Foundry Society awards banquet. Every Bosco Tech entry in the AFS’ recent foundry competition placed within the top ten, even while competing against students from Cal Poly Pomona, Cal Poly, SLO, and other are high schools.

The Tech winners were: Freshman Aiden Chavez Best of School Sophomore Sassan Almasian Third place Other Bosco Tech place earners were: Alexis Mendoza, Ryan Suarez, Joseph Cisneros, Christopher Lynn, Andrew Ring, Riley Sumner, and Joseph Reynoso and were presented with a certificate of distinction. Congratulations to each of these MSET students!

In addition to the student awards, long-time Tech foundry and manufacturing processes instructor Mr. William Gardner was honored for his contributions to teaching in the profession. The event was held on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.

IMPORTANT: SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS As part of a college preparatory curriculum, the Bosco Tech faculty believes students need to keep their minds active and engaged during the summer months through reading. The relaxed atmosphere of summer is a perfect time for students to pace themselves and enjoy the reading assignments with more flexible deadlines. This helps to build habits that support our goal of all Bosco Tech graduates becoming life-long learners.

All juniors and seniors have required summer reading in both English and social sciences; sophomores have required summer reading in English only. Seniors taking either AP Hunan Geograophy or AP Comparative Government and Politics also have summer reading, as do students entering the second year of Bilingual Spanish or taking AP Spanish Language and Culture. Typically, the assigned readings require students to select a piece of work or purchase a specified book, complete the reading, and either complete and submit a short assignment via email to the instructor or be ready for a relevant assignment when the new school year begins.

Students will be given reading lists just prior to the end of the school year. Parents can go to the homepage of the school’s website (www.boscotech.edu) for a link to view the complete reading lists and follow-up assignment instructions. ISBN numbers are listed on the site so that students can purchase the same edition of the book; be sure the ISBN number matches. Books can be purchased at book stores or online.

The Bosco Tech faculty appreciates the crucial role parents play in their son’s education and your support of these summer assignments reminds our young people of the importance of reading throughout the year.

BOSCO TECH MUSIC NEWS —BY BAND BOOSTER MR. JUN REYES

Jazz Night Out The DBTI Jazz Band performed at the school’s annual Jazz Night Out concert, held on Friday, May 18! The theme for this year’s concert was “Totally Awesome 80s,” and family, friends, faculty and fellow students were treated to a night filled with music and games. This was the music program’s biggest fundraiser of the year.

Special thanks to the Music Booster parents who worked hard, as they have done all year, to make this event a truly memorable and successful one.

Spring Concert A week after Jazz Night Out, the band performed its last formal event of the year at the Annual Spring Concert on Thursday, May 24. The concert featured performances by the music appreciation class and the awardwinning DBTI Symphonic Band.

On behalf of Mr. Daniel Almanza and the Don Bosco Tech music students, we would like to thank everyone who supported the music program during the past year. We organized a string of successful band events that wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of many parents, sponsors, friends and family. We know that sending your son to Bosco Tech is already a significant commitment, and many parents have managed to go above and beyond with their support of our program. The end of April and the beginning of May was a busy period, but a very satisfying and successful time for Bosco’s track and field team.

The Del Rey League Prelims took place April 25 at St. Paul High School.

The main purpose of the prelims is to qualify the best athletes for the league finals the following week. Many of our athletes succeeded in qualifying: for the sprints, JV athletes freshmen Jun Jeong and Kenneth Lopez, and sophomore Ryan Suarez all qualified for the 100, 200, & 400 meter sprints. Varsity senior Sidney Herrera qualified for the 100 and 400. Both Kenneth and Sidney posted a new PR (Personal Record) for their 400 efforts. In the varsity 110 hurdles, junior Alvaro Chavez and senior Andres Moran both qualified with new personal records (PRs). The finals for the JV field events also took place on this day. Shot putter freshman Vincent Everett set a new PR with a throw of 25’ 7.75”. For the discus, our freshmen Aaron Reyes and Vincent Everett did well with throws of 61’ 10” and 67’, respectively. Sophomore Gabriel Gonzalez had the best day of all the JV by winning the discus event with a throw of 73’ 3” and a first place ribbon.

The league finals on May 2 were also held at St. Paul HS, and our team was extremely successful in 12 different events. The meet started off well for us with our JV 4 X 1 relay members Jun Jeong, Ryan Suarez, Ken Lopez and freshman Joshua Bernal placing third in the league with a time of 51.09 seconds, winning ribbons for all four; JV sprints: 100 meters Ryan took second (12.3 seconds) R (ribbon), 200 m, Jun finished third (25.3 seconds) R. 400 m, Ryan and Kenneth both PRed, and Jun took third (66.38 seconds) PR & R. Varsity sprints 400 m Sidney Herrera placed second in the league (52.62 seconds) PR M (medal) and qualified for CIF Prelims. Varsity distance 800 m senior Anthony Caballes (2:33 minutes) PR; sophomore Joey Rivas 5th (2:16 ) PR; junior Joseph Cisneros finished 4th in league (2:15 minutes) PR & R. 1600 m, Anthony (5:36) PR; Joseph (5:16) PR; Joey fourth in league (5:09) PR & M. 3200 m. TRACK & FIELD NEWS (CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE) with his first place vault of 9’, beating his St. Anthony opponent by a half a foot. This was a new PR for Paul, and it doubly qualified him for CIF prelims by his league championship and his height.

May 12 was the CIF Southern Section Prelims held at Carpinteria High School. Varsity athletes from all over southern California competed here to qualify for the CIF finals the following week. Two of our outstanding athletes competed: seniors Sidney Herrera in the 400 meter sprint, and Paul Erickson in pole vault. Although neither qualified for the finals, both put forth tremendous effort and deserve praise for their accomplishment in reaching this level. It should be noted that Paul not only PRed, but what is most remarkable is that this was his first year in track, and he managed to do all this without being able to practice since Bosco Tech has no pole vault pit (Attention possible donors!) Both athletes earned CIF Championship patches. The seven ribbons, 11 medals, one league championship patch, and two CIF patches—all earned in the last three weeks was a fitting ending to a successful and enjoyable season.

BOSCO TECH FATHER/SON BREAKFAST —BY PARENTS’ COUNCIL IIAISON CATHY RIVERA

Bosco Tech’s annual Father-Son Breakfast was another huge success. Fathers, grandpas, uncles, ninos, coaches and special male role models shared time during Mass and over breakfast with a special young man in their life. This year’s guest speaker was Parents’ Council member David Valdivia, who has been active with the council for several years and will have two sons at the Tech in the fall. David supports the lacrosse boosters, the band, and is Scout Leader of his sons’ Boy Scout troop.

In addition to Mass and breakfast, the crowd played games for fun prizes. For this year’s raffle, we were fortunate to have a great prize (Jet Blue tickets) which earned $2,000 for financial aid. The tickets were donated on behalf of Parents’ Council member and vice president, Ms. Norma Robles. Norma has been active with Parents’ Council for several years, and is involved in other campus programs.

I would like to thank all the Parents’ Council members and board who helped plan, coordinate and work the event, as well as our fabulous parent volunteers. I would also like to send out a special shout out to our alumni parents, Mr. & Mrs. Kirkbride who provided their fun photobooth. They always do such a great job and their booth is fully equipped for any type of event.

The Kirkbrides can be reached at 562-201-9075. A special thanks to Magda Gonzales for the delicious breakfast; her menudo was the hit of the event.

A very special thank you to faculty and staff who supported our Jet Blue fundraiser; together, we made a difference. And of course, thank you to our guests who helped to support Bosco Tech and our students.

2018 SKIN IN THE GAME—THE CAMPAIGN FOR TECHMAN FIELD The phrase “skin in the game” is a metaphor for actions on the field of play as well as the sentiment of incurring risk by being involved in achieving a goal. With that being said, we invite you to Play like a Champion! LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION—2018 GRADUATION VIDEO A DVD of the Class of 2018’s graduation ceremony, including scenes taken before and after the ceremony, will soon be available. The DVD will include highlights of the senior awards ceremony and luncheon, the senior class barbeque, and the baccalaureate Mass, as well as the complete conferral of diplomas.

This is an opportunity to have a record of your son at this important milestone and for him to have a visual reminder of the many friends that have played an important part in his life over the last four years.

On June 8, as a special bonus to those who purchase the video before graduation day, parents who are interested will be invited to videotape a brief message to their son to be included in the video. Before the Baccalaureate Mass, there will be two cameramen with microphones in front of the 600 classroom building. See them if you wish to tape your congratulations to your son and the entire class of 2018.

The cost of each video is $35 (tax included). Send your order form and check to the Finance Office, making checks are payable to Bosco Tech.
