A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Bosco Tech families-I hope that you and your loved ones had a festive and merry Christmas! Happy New Year--here’s to a great 2025! It definitely started on a ‘high note’ as we watched the Salesians of Don Bosco Southern California High School Marching Band in the Rose Parade! The band’s performance was a harmonious collaboration with our two brother schools, St. John Bosco and Bishop Mora Salesian (and students from our respective sister schools), and a very memorable experience for everyone involved. Special thanks to Mr. Sam Hankins, our very talented and dedicated music director who tirelessly drove months of musical and marching practice for the harmonious blend we heard! As the new year begins, I’d like to congratulate our freshmen as they begin in-depth coursework of their newly selected technology program. These young men have made important--and informed--decisions about their futures and we wish them well! Before we move into the new year, I’d like to also recognize and appreciate the amazing efforts of our student body in the closing days of 2024. Their commitment to, and success of, student-led food drives, toy drives, blood drives, Christmas tree donations, and collections of hygene products for unhoused veterans is a vital reminder of the powerful faith-based dimension of campus life. Let us never take for granted the giving spirit of our Tech community! As this year’s Salesian strenna (thematic gift or word of encouragment) reminds us, we are ‘anchored in hope. Knowing that our fine young men ARE our future is encouraging and inspiring. Thank you for that, Tech students! And thank you, Tech families, for raising young people who look far beyond themselves and do something positive about the needs they see! May the commitment to bettering our community continue into 2025 and beyond.

ENTERTAINMENT EXEC OFFERS INTERNSHIPS TECH ALUMNUS IS MEDIA COMPANY CREATOR “I know what you’re capable of. I know what you can do because of Bosco Tech. That’s why I want to offer internships here. This school offers more than most other schools out there.” MUSE TV Founder and Executive Producer Mike Sandoval and his business partner, Hannah Fletcher, met today with Tech students interested in valuable entertainment industry internships. A 1993 Electronics Technology Tech alumnus, Mike founded MUSE after working at KTLA Morning News, the National Hockey League, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, to name a few. MUSE is a sports and entertainment website with the purpose of bringing people closer to the industry while creating a space to share valuable ways for viewers to give back to their community. A MUSE mobile app is launching soon on iTunes Store and Google Play. For several years, Mike has been offering internships to university students at his other alma mater, CSUF. This year, he is creating rare spots for Tech high school students, understanding their training and all they are capable of. Follow MUSE at www.musetv.net.

Congratulations to Bosco Tech’s National Honor Society inductees! Last month, NHS executive officers and returning members welcomed 30 students into their chapter. Founded on four pillars-scholarship, service, leadership and character--the NHS is one of the oldest, largest, and most widely recognized co-curricular student organizations in American high schools, with 1.4 million members. Thank you to inductee parents and Mr. Rudy Herrera, Mr. Jeff Krynen, and to Ms. Marlena Jackson, NHS moderator, for a memorable ceremony and celebration afterwards.

STUDENTS DECORATE/DONATE TREES MAKING SPIRITS MERRY & BRIGHT

On the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and following the Salesian Spirit Games, the winners of this year’s technology Christmas tree decorating competition was announced. Scoring was so close, there was a tie between CSEE and MAT for their beautiful work. Congratulations, gentlemen! Students in CSEE and MAT were awarded a relaxed dress day. Each tree was donated to a deserving local family to make their Christmas merry. Well done, Techmen and thank you, Parent Council for donating the trees. Merry Christmas to all!

SUPPORTING UNHOUSED VETERANS RED CROSS CLUB EXCEEDS GOALS IN HELPING HOMELESS VETS

Thank you to all who donated to the Red Cross Club’s recent Veterans Wishist Drive for homeless vets. Much-appreciated boxes and gift bags full of practical items were delivered to the Red Cross San Gabriel/Pomona Valley Headquarters in Arcadia on December 13. Forty generous students and families donated over 1,200 essential items like toothpaste, shampoo, combs, Kleenex and soap. Bosco Tech’s Red Cross Club was the top private school donor and came in as the second highest donor among large public and private schools combined. In the coming weeks, donations will be distributed in individual hygiene kits to unhoused veterans. “It’s so great to provide aid and hope to our veterans,” said senior Evan Cheung, Red Cross Club Co-President. “There is no way to fully repay them for their service, but I hope that through this drive they can see our support and gratitude for their service to this country.”

MOSAIC IS PART OF L.A. ART HISTORY Bosco’s lobby mural is part of L.A. art history! Dr. Joseph Young, the talented mid-century artist who created the Tech’s iconic mural in the school’s front lobby, is the artist behind several iconic mosaics around the city. Speaking of the Tech’s front lobby piece in 1992, he shared “I wanted the mural to express the functions of the school.” Familiar to generations of Techmen, the work integrates the tools of the trades, crafts and technologies taught at the Tech, with the cross and scriptures representing the school’s spiritual foundation. You may have seen some of Dr. Young’s other works throughout Los Angeles. He created mosaic murals at UCLA’s Mathematical Sciences Building, the Parker Center, the Hollenbeck Police Station, and the County Hall of Records. He also is the talent behind the Holocaust Memorial in Pan Pacific Park, the Triforium, a 60-foot sculpture in Downtown L.A.’s Civic Center, and Canto 79, a sculpture that welcomes guests to the La Mirada Theatre. FRESHMEN MAKE TECHNOLOGY SELECTION Congratulations to our freshman class who recently chose their technology program for the next three and a half years! “MSET is a great tech for me because it’s hands-on and exciting,” said freshman Nicolas Adalin. “In the foundry, we get to create objects from metal, and in the welding lab, we learn how to fuse metals together using different techniques. I enjoy working with my hands to understand new topics. Bosco Tech is the only school that offers these unique opportunities, and no other schools have this. I am excited to learn more skills and apply them in the future. This is the kind of learning I have always wanted!”

SENIOR COMPLETES CAMPUS’ DROUGHT-TOLERANT SCOUT PROJECT Eagle Scout candidate, ASB President and Tech senior Clark Cañada (MAT) and his dedicated support team recently completed a drought-tolerant project on campus. After helping several other Eagle Scouts with their projects, Clark knew without doubt that he wanted to do something conservationbased. Seeing the school’s front lawn area every day, Clark noticed that during the school year, the lawn is often dead or overgrown with weeds. “With this in mind, and when thinking of a possible project that would help my community, it just made sense,” he explained. “Having a new garden would not only better help the scenery and the presentation of the school, but it would also help the drought problem in California because I planned on all the plants being native and being easier to maintain in these conditions.” The project, he shares, was probably the most I have ever done not only in my scouting career, but also just as work as a whole. It included late nights of paperwork, researching the correct plants, appropriate ground cover, and communicating with potential donors. “Many scouts and students helped me with the project. They include Riley Tanada, Juan Casillas, Andrew Phaneuf, and Damian Cardenas, as well as Luis Camacho and the many adult leaders and scouts from my troop. I could not have done it without their help and I’m so happy they took time out of their weekend to help me out!” What did Clark learn through the project? He candidly shared, “Not to wait till less than six months to work towards your Eagle, but also to trust in the process. With enough determination, and help from your loved ones, you can accomplish anything. This was not only a test of my endurance, but also a test of my abilities to lead, adapt, and overcome any obstacles that came in the way.” “And finally, sleep is really important, man! After all this is done, I’m going to lay down and just hibernate the entirety of Christmas break!” Thanks, Clark; you’ve definitely earned the rest!

NOVEMBER STUDENTS OF THE MONTH Bosco Tech is proud to announce the November Students of the Month. The honor recognizes student success in the classroom, as well as celebrates the outstanding characteristics of our students as citizens of the school community. These students were voted on by their teachers to receive this recognition.

For Grade 9: Nathan Mendez Osorio This is an outstanding student and athlete, and as such, is a great example of a Bosco Techman. This freshman does everything he can to help in class, even when he was recovering from a major injury. His teachers have been very grateful for him and to have him in their classes.

For Grade 10: Louis Barna This sophomore regularly participates in class and was noted by several teachers for how often he raises his hand to ask good and appropriate questions. He is considerate, thoughtful and goodhearted at all times. This young man is a very dedicated and responsible student.

For Grade 11: Francis Smith This student is attentive in class and asks pertinent questions, especially those concerning Theology. He regularly completes his work to a high degree of satisfaction and stays highly proactive about his studies outside of class hours. He is heavily involved in multiple extra-curriculars, while all the time, still maintaining his studies.

For Grade 12: Kevin Rojas This young man is a diligent, insightful, perceptive, and optimistic student, who is always helpful to anyone, whenever he is needed. While maintaining all his studies, he is also a very hard worker with all the school’s many campus organizations. He gives a great example of how a Tech senior should behave.

ACE SENIORS TOUR CSULB SIT IN ON ENGINEERING CLASS & TOUR WITH PROFESSOR

ACE seniors enjoyed a field trip to CSULB in early December. During a special event designed to showcase opportunities within the clean energy and construction industry, Tech students toured the Long Beach campus with Professor Tariq Shehab from the Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Engineering Management. The students also sat in on an actual class in the department and had lunch with current CSULB students. The event was hosted by the National Electrical Contractors Association, Los Angeles County Chapter, and Cosco Fire Protection, Inc. It is necessary for parents to apply annually online for enrollment and tuition assistance; additionally, the enrollment packet must be completed and submitted before applying for tuition assistance. To access Enrollment, visit www.boscotech.edu: • From the top right-hand corner, select Student/Parent Hub, • Scroll down and click on FACTS Login. DBTI-CA is the district code. • Sign in with your username and password, select Parent then select Login. • On the left side of the FACTS Family Portal home page, select Apply/Enroll, • Select Enrollment/Reenrollment, • Select Click Here to Open Enrollment, • Select the Start Enrollment Packet. Please note that Enrollment Packets are pre-populated; please update information carefully and confirm the data before submitting your enrollment packet. This information becomes your son’s permanent school record. As stated in the contract, an enrollment fee of $700 is charged to your FACTS payment plan and split into two payments of $350 each, due on February 21 and March 21, 2025, with an automatic withdrawal from your FACTS payment plan account.
