Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋංඇർංඉൺඅ Dear Bosco Tech Family— Happy New Year! I hope that you and your family enjoyed a wonderful, festive Christmas and you are experiencing some well-earned down time as we prepare to start 2022!

I recently came across the words of twentieth-century poet and pacifist Edith Lovejoy Pierce who once said of a new year, “We will open the book.

Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's Day.” May the year ahead be full of good opportunities!

Speaking of opportunities, many of our seniors have begun receiving exciting acceptances from colleges and universities across the country, and in quite a few cases, wonderful scholarship packages. That doesn’t just happen—I know this is the deserved culmination of years of dedication and hard work. Well done, Class of 2022!

Please encourage your senior son to share his good news with us by having him report acceptances and possible financial packages to the Counseling Department’s Google Doc. We closely track this important information both to share in your son’s successes, but also to help underclassman in their preparation for future transition to college.

Speaking of underclassmen, congratulations to our freshman. On Dec. 11, the future graduating class of 2025 made their technology selection. This crucial milestone will set the tone for their remaining three and a half years of study, and I wish each freshman well in his ‘home’ technology.

Following in their footsteps are our incoming applicants. These eager elementary and middle school students are completing the application process and gearing up to become Techmen next fall. If you know of a friend or family member who would thrive in the Tech’s unique environment, please encourage them to look into all the school has to offer—you, more than anyone, understand what sets it apart among premier high schools! Admissions Director Tom Hogan is available to provide information on private tours and shadow visits with current students.

We will continue to keep you up to date on all that’s happening on campus. I invite you to join us for our quarterly Coffee with the Principal meetings. Hosted by the Parent Council, they are good opportunities to hear the latest campus news. As always, working with your son and your family is our privilege and good communication is key to that relationship.

Dඋ. Oൿൾඅංൺ Mංඋൺආඈඇඍൾඌ Sർඁඈඅൺඋඌඁංඉ Fඎඇൽ “Ofelia Miramontes’ passion for educational equity and diversity was always a primary focus throughout her life and career.” said William Barclay (ME ’67), Tech alumnus and husband of the late Dr. Miramontes.

Prior to her passing in 2005, Dr. Miramontes established a fund to help provide scholarships at Bosco Tech for first generation students, economically disadvantaged students, and students from backgrounds that are under-represented in today’s scientific and technology focused companies.

“Ofelia first learned of Bosco Tech from me,” said Bill, of his late wife’s appreciation for Bosco Tech. “She witnessed my strong background in science and my passion to make a difference in the The late Dr. Ofelia Miramontes and her husband, Tech world.” alumnus William Barclay (ME ‘67) Ofelia was impressed with the school because of its successful approach in providing a college-prep level of education to diverse students in addition to providing a strong background in one of several key technological career paths. Ofelia understood the unique perspectives and benefits that diverse students could bring to these companies, and conversely the opportunities these companies could provide for these students. With her lifelong career focus on fostering diversity and equity, Ofelia recognized that Bosco Tech provided a unique opportunity for supporting the education of students from the groups she was interested in helping to support. Her very generous gift of $249,000 will provide scholarships for many hard-working Tech students.

Dr. Miramontes’ life was always dedicated to making positive changes through education. After graduating as a first-generation student from San Diego State University, she taught classes as a Peace Corps volunteer to special-education students in Arica, Chile. She then joined a small team of educators who established one of the first bilingual education programs in the United States, located in Nestor, California. Later Ofelia and a colleague were invited by the San Diego Unified School District to establish San Diego’s first bilingual education program, and she eventually directed a teacher-training center for bilingual education for the large school district. While working in San Diego, Ofelia completed a masters degree at U.S. International University, which now is Alliant International University, and eventually pursued a doctoral degree in education at Claremont Graduate School.

In 1981, while taking a year to write her Ph.D dissertation, Dr. Miramontes moved with Bill from San Diego to Boulder, Colorado, when Bill accepted a research fellowship at the University of Colorado. While settling in Colorado, Dr. Miramontes served as a consultant, helping to create a bilingual education program for a Boulder elementary school. Upon completion of her dissertation, she was invited to join the faculty in the School of Education at CU-Boulder. As a leading bilingual scholar focusing on linguistic diversity and language acquisition, Ofelia published three books and numerous articles and was invited to lecture around the world on re-structuring schools to foster linguistic diversity. She adeptly taught children, adults, and her colleagues, and throughout her life, she was a vital force for educational equity and cultural diversity.

"Her expertise was in the learning needs of students who are linguistic and cultural minorities," the former Dean of the School of Education stated. "As a Latina, she brought to others an awareness of, and a sense of immediacy about, issues of cultural and linguistic diversity.”

Dr. Ofelia Miramontes was eventually asked to serve as the Associate Vice Chancellor of Diversity and (continued on next page)

Dඋ. Oൿൾඅංൺ Mංඋൺආඈඇඍൾඌ Sർඁඈඅൺඋඌඁංඉ Fඎඇൽ (Cਏ਎ਔਉ਎ਕਅ਄) Equity at the University of Colorado Boulder, and in this role Dr. Miramontes created the CU-LEAD Alliance and personally established an undergraduate scholarship program for first-generation college students and students of color.

Her work as Vice Chancellor was instrumental in fostering the development and creation of academic excellence on campus, and helped enable recruitment programs on campus, which ultimately led to an increased and sustained presence of linguistically, socially and economically diverse students and faculty on the Boulder campus.

The current University of Colorado Chancellor Philip DiStefano has said of Dr. Miramontes, "Her enthusiasm and commitment to the university and in our community has left a legacy that will benefit students, faculty and staff for years to come."

Thanks to Dr. Miramontes’ generosity to Bosco Tech, her extended legacy will also benefit Tech students for many years to come!

Bඋ. Jඈඁඇ Rൺඌඈඋ (ME ‘62) (1944-2021) The Tech community is deeply saddened by the passing of our beloved Br. John Rasor (ME '62), alumnus and longtime instructor, on Dec. 22.

An iconic member of the Tech’s faculty, Br. John had the unique distinction of being the only instructor to teach in three different technological departments (then-named Materials Science, Electronics, and Computer Science). Throughout his ministry, he taught at Bosco Tech for nearly 40 years.

At various times since 1995, he served as an adjunct professor of theology at the Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology in Berkeley, California. During those periods, he also developed and taught courses on Salesian spirituality offered by the Institute of Salesian Studies (ISS) in the same city. In addition, he developed and maintained websites for Don Bosco Hall, the seat of the ISS, the Salesian’s western US province, and a Salesian parish in Oakland, California.

Brother John’s presence will be greatly missed on the Tech campus and throughout the province. A memorial service for Tech faculty and students is planned for Friday, Jan. 21, at 10:40 a.m. on campus.

Rൾൾඇඋඈඅඅආൾඇඍ & Tඎංඍංඈඇ Aඌඌංඌඍൺඇർൾ ൿඈඋ 2022-2023 Sർඁඈඈඅ Yൾൺඋ Tuition Assistance: The online tuition assistance application for the 2022-2023 school year process for FACTS Grant & Aid is accessible through your Family Portal in the Financial tab. We encourage families in need only of Tuition Assistance to apply. For Returning families, the enrollment packet will need to be submitted before applying for Tuition Assistance.

Parents must apply annually online through FACTS Grant & Aid for Tuition Assistance located through your family portal. Tuition Assistance awards are valid for the year of application only. Assurance of an award is not guaranteed on an annual basis and depends on many factors, including available funding and application timing. If applying for a merit scholarship only, please do not apply through FACTS Grant & Aid; if your son qualifies, Mr. John Garcia will email you a merit scholarship application.

The deadline window to submit an online Tuition Assistance application through FACTS Grant & Aid is December 6, 2021—January 10, 2022. No exception will be made after the January 10 deadline.

Please follow the steps below: To apply online for tuition assistance through FACTS Grant & Aid, you will need to : 1. Log in to your FACTS Family Portal and select the Financial tab from the left side menu bar.

2. Select Apply for FACTS Grant & Aid; sign in with your FACTS Family Portal email and password.

3. Click on Start Tuition Assistance Application.

4. Select the appropriate school year (2022-2023).

5. Complete the steps as prompted and submit with the Grant & Aid processing fee of $35.

Please note: New Applicants will not be reviewed until all documentation is received and the fee paid. If your FACTS payment plan account is past due, your tuition assistance application may be denied. The Tuition Assistance program is designed to provide funds to eligible students from institutional and private funding sources and is limited.

Reenrollment: Reenrollment for the school year 2022-2023 will be available on December 6, 2021, through your FACTS Family Portal, with a deadline of January 10, 2022.

1. Log in to your FACTS Family Portal under the Apply/Enroll tab 2. Select the Enrollment/Reenrollment tab 3. Select Click Here to open enrollment 4. Click on the Start Enrollment packet.

Returning family’s enrollment packet will need to be submitted before applying for Tuition Assistance.

Enrollment Packets are pre-populated with information; please update or confirm the data and submit your enrollment packet by January 10, 2022. As stated in the enrollment contract, a $650 enrollment fee is charged to your FACTS payment plan and due with an automatic withdrawal from your account on February 25, 2022. Following charges are the student service fees of $750 in two payments of $375 on March 25, 2022, and April 22, 2022.

Congratulations to the Tech's eSports phenom Brandon “Bogie” Bocanegra who won the Madden 22 CIF State Championship title on Dec. 16 in a head-to-head nail biter against his competitor from Encino’s Crespi Carmelite High School!

In an intense best-of-three finals match up between the Tigers' Brandon and his worthy competitor, Brandon took the win, 2-1. Undefeated in the regular season (170), and finishing the playoffs at 11-2, he showed us how it's done with an incredible victory!

This is the Tech’s first ever CIF Esports championship ring and trophy.

Congrats to “Bogie” and the whole team who are celebrating with him!

QඎൾඌඍBඋංൽ඀ൾ Sൾඇංඈඋ Eൺඋඇඌ Pඈආඈඇൺ Cඈඅඅൾ඀ൾ Fඎඅඅ Rංൽൾ Congratulations to QuestBridge Match winner Kevin Valdivia (MSET) who has earned a full-ride scholarship to Pomona College!

Kevin plans to major in International Relations or Political Science, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) and intends to pursue a career in law or politics.

At the Tech, the busy senior is secretary of the National Honors Society and the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. He plays trombone in the Tech’s jazz, symphonic, and concert bands, and tutors middle and high school students, as well as college students, primarily in math.

He is an altar server at East Los Angeles’ Our Lady of Solitude parish.

Kevin recently was featured in an “Elembradoresne” Instagram post about the community’s Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe parade and celebrations where he led the procession in his altar boy cassock.

A feature article in The Los Angeles Times provides details about the traditional celebration that brings together the community.

On Friday, December 17, DBTI Band held it’s annual winter concert, CHRISTMAS BLESSINGS! We held our holiday event outside of Youth Ministry and enjoyed dinner served to our guests by Magda in Tech Hall. We were fortunate to have had Fr. Thien Nguyen, SDB, on hand to lead us in prayer prior to our concert. It was a magical evening attended by Bosco Tech band families, friends, and loved ones.
