THE GEAR

CELEBRATING THE FEAST DAY OF ST. JOHN BOSCO

ISSUE 137 FEBRUARY 2024

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Hello, Tech family-Students and faculty are settling into the second semester and, as usual at this time of year, there are several exciting learning opportunities coming up. A few worth mentioning are: •

•

•

Engineers Day--on Feb. 22, alumni in engineering professions, as well as some in science and technology fields, will return to campus to share career and educational insights with our students. Robotics--the competitive season begins in February and our team is working hard to be ready to face the competition head on. Design-Build Competition--a highlight of the semester for our ACE seniors, the design-build opportunity brings their skill set to the forefront and has the class work as a team to construct a practical self-designed structure in a timed setting.

I’d also like to note the numerous amazing acceptances that our seniors already are earning. Every day, we hear of more good news and options for our seniors as they plan their futures. Kudos to the seniors, to their parents and to our College Counseling team, led by Ms. Gambill, for their commitment to finishing strong in the always-arduous college application season. The incoming college acceptances also are valuable evidence that our students are being well prepared for the rigors of post-secondary education. I look forward to seeing you on campus; please join us for the St. Patrick’s Blarney and Blessings Celebration on Sunday, March 10. It is always a highlight of the spring and successfully helps hardworking students in financial need.

God bless you and your family,

Jeff Krynen (BT ‘83) Principal

SGV BOWL+TIGERS = BEST OF THE BEST On January 13, the Tech was well represented at the second annual SGV Bowl Game. Seniors Jake Ayala, Andrew Shahin, Miles Avila, and Head Coach Adam Uballez were selected to the San Gabriel Valley’s annual competition representing the western side. All of our Tigers were starters on both sides of the ball; Miles Avila and Jake Ayala were starters on the offensive line and Andrew Shahin started as linebacker on the defense. Coach Uballez coached the defensive line for the west side. Although they did not win, our student athletes represented the Tech proudly. Jake Ayala: “It was a great opportunity to play amongst great players and a great coaching staff.” Miles Avila: “It was a great pleasure to represent Bosco Tech in the SGV Bowl and I was very blessed for this wonderful opportunity.” Andrew Shahin: “It was a great experience. I met some dudes that can ball, built new coach connections, and it was fun to just be a part of an overall positive event for the community.” Coach Adam Uballez: “I am proud of our student athletes who represented our football program at the SGV Bowl game. These young men exemplified sportsmanship, leadership, and brotherhood throughout the game. Regardless of the score, our student athletes played until the very last minute. I am proud of these young men and was honored to share the field with them one last time.”

Thank you to everyone who attended the Golf Booster Poker Night on Jan. 28. The players and guests enjoyed a delicious meal, drinks, door prizes, silent auctions, 50:50 raffle, and had lots of fun! Head Coach Brian Waters tells us that the event was an overwhelming success and folks are already asking when the next tournament will be. “It was great to see that everyone at the event had loads of fun while contributing to a great cause,” Coach Waters says. “Many left asking, ‘When is the next tournament?’ It took a lot of blood, sweat, and tears to put it together, but it was, oh, so worth it! MAT’S PRACTICAL CAPSTONE PROJECT SENIORS PREP FOR FUTURE UTILIZING DIGITAL APPLICATIONS

As part of their Digital Applications studies, seniors in Media Arts & Technology have created and populated professional LinkedIn profiles. MAT Instructor Victoria Corona designed the assignment as a capstone project, similar to college courses, for several practical reasons. “While this course is called ‘Digital Applications,’ it is the last MAT semester course before the boys are off to college or the working world,” Ms. Corona said. “I decided to treat it like a capstone class, much like university majors do. In order to prepare them, I have the boys focusing on real-world applications, including LinkedIn, and incorporating their resumes, future and career goals onto digital spaces. Soon, they’ll complete their own portfolio websites.” “My hope is that, by initiating projects such as building their LinkedIn profiles, they will be that much more prepared to exhibit their skills in the future.” “I am learning how to present all of my activities and work experience in resumes and profiles so I can be better prepared for after college when finding career opportunities,” said senior Nicholas Garcia. “We are strategically leveraging LinkedIn by integrating our resumes to showcase our accomplishments, strengths, and skills,” explained senior Riley De Luna. “This proactive approach not only facilitates the presentation of our professional profile, but also positions us for potential employment opportunities that align with our demonstrated skills and expertise.”

Left to right, seniors Nicholas Gomez and Riley De Luna work on their MAT capstone project, creating their professional digital presence.
