Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Dear Bosco Tech Family— I pray that you and your loved ones are well! As we near the start of the fourth quarter, I’m astounded by just how quickly this academic year is passing. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we were welcoming into the Tech family our incoming freshmen, and now we’re entering the final portion of their first year of high school!

As we move forward in our Strategic Planning, that will set the tone for the Tech for the next several years, we are continually grateful for the engagement of our alumni and the community support of our school and our current and future students. There are several key individuals included in this issue of The Gear to whom I’d like to draw your attention:  On Sunday, March 6, Bishop David O’Connell, our respected trustee, will again host a festive St. Patrick’s celebration that will benfit Bosco Tech students. He and his group of devoted friends, who humorously call themselves the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick, invite you to attend their casual gathering. It will feature dinner, drinks, live and silent auctions, and top notch entertainment. All proceeds from the evening help Tech students with tuition assistance. Please plan to join us; tickets and sponsorship opportunity information are available on our website at boscotech.edu/stpatricks.  In the same generous tone, Tech alumnus Dr. Eric Madrid (Drafting ‘90) and his wife, Whanda, have established the Madrid Family Foundation at Bosco Tech, providing scholarship support to hardworking Tech students. As you’ll read, not only are Dr. and Mrs. Madrid making a difference at the Tech, but they are also forming a lasting impact in the several medical missions trips they have taken overseas. We are most appreciative to the Madrids for their generosity and desire to make a difference, including in the lives of young Techmen!

Daily, I am touched by the difference individuals in our Tech family are enthusiastically making at Bosco Tech, in our community, and far beyond. Whether it be our faculty and staff, parent volunteers, dedicated trustees, generous donors, students, and alumni—you inspire me!

Dඋ. Rංർඁൺඋൽ Eඋංർ Mൺൽඋංൽ (Dඋൺൿඍංඇ඀ ‘90) Dr. Richard "Eric" Madrid (Drafting '90) and his family have recently pledged $100,000 over five years, through the Madrid Family Foundation, to provide invaluable scholarship support to Bosco Tech students.

“God has blessed our family,” Eric said. “My wife, Whanda, and I thought it was very important that we give back and help others who may have a financial need. We both had to work hard to get where we are, but we have not forgotten that there were many who helped us along the way. We want to therefore give back to others.”

“Our hope is that our gift will help students who otherwise would not be able to attend Bosco Tech, be able to have the great experience that I and so many others have had,” he explained. “These young students will eventually go out in the world and become pillars of their community and, perhaps one day, they also will be in a position where they can give back to Bosco Tech in the years to come.”

Eric, or as Tech friends remember him, Richard, is a family medicine physician providing primary care through the Rancho Family Medical Group in South Riverside County. Rancho Family Medical is affiliated with UC San Diego Health Physician Network. Eric also serves as Assistant Program Director of Loma Linda University Murrieta Family Medicine Residency Program.

Both are areas near to his heart--helping prevent disease and illness versus simply treating chronic ailments, and training and preparing the doctors of tomorrow.

Growing up in Whittier and attending Saint Linus School in Norwalk, Eric knew all about the Tech as a youngster. “Bosco had a great reputation for graduating community leaders and high caliber young men,” he said. “Although my family really had to stretch their finances in order for me to attend, it was sacrifice they were willing to make and for that I am very grateful.”

“In addition to all the wonderful people I met at the school, I played varsity basketball and ran on varsity cross country. Being an athlete taught me the discipline that was necessary for success in life. I simply applied this formula to my academic life, family life and business endeavors. This work ethic helped me accomplish my goals both professionally and personally.”

A desire to serve others led him to become a doctor. “I specifically chose family medicine as I enjoyed the preventive medicine aspect of being a doctor,” he said. “I always felt I could better serve people if I could help them improve their health in an attempt to prevent chronic disease from developing.

The ability to see people actually make a transformation in their lives is incredibly rewarding,” he explained. “I have had so many of patients over the years get off their CPAP machines for sleep apnea, blood pressure medicines, diabetic medications, including insulin, by simply making diet and (continued on next page)

Dඋ. Mൺൽඋංൽ (ർඈඇඍංඇඎൾൽ) lifestyle changes. I strongly encourage my patients to reduce their sugar and simple carbohydrate consumption in their diet. This is when the magic happens. This is very rewarding, and I enjoy being part of their journey!”

In addition to providing primary health care and training medical students from UC Riverside School of Medicine and Loma Linda Medical School, the married father of three grown kids is involved in administering sports physicals for high school athletes. But his volunteerism extends beyond the local community.

Over the last 16 years, Eric has traveled to Haiti over a dozen times, and to the Philippines and Mexico to do medical mission work through Temecula’s Haiti Endowment Fund and local church outreach efforts. On several trips, Whanda was able to join Eric and, although Covid has curtailed their travels, the couple is planning more mission trips.

And what would Dr. Madrid tell today’s Tech students? “Cherish the relationships you form with classmates and instructors. Dream big and work hard. On average, we each get about 80 trips around the sun; if we are blessed, we will get more. No matter what you do in life, if your goal is to serve others and you strive to make the world a better place, you will be successful.”

--Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ Rൾඉඋൾඌൾඇඍඌ ංඇ Tඈඎඋඇൺආൾඇඍ ඈൿ Rඈඌൾඌ® As the dust settles on Pasadena’s Colorado Boulevard, and the 2022 festivities are deemed another overwhelming success watched by millions around the world, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association® is already working on next year’s extravaganza; the meticulously coordinated preparations for the internationally renowned event never stop.

Located close to the epicenter of the celebration, it is no surprise that Bosco Tech has been well represented in Tournament festivities through the years. (That involvement starts early--special thanks to Tech Red Cross club members, and band members and boosters, who volunteered to usher in 2022 parade grandstands and parking lots.) Currently, several individuals affiliated with the Tech are among those instrumental in producing America’s New Year Celebration. We touched base with a few key players who are proud members of the Tech family: Ed Morales (Building Technology ’81) Treasurer of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association In addition to meeting the demands of being a partner at the Los Angeles-based Law Offices of Borton Petrini, LLP, Ed Morales (BT ’81) serves as Treasurer of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association. This year, Ed oversaw five operating committees and ran the membership committee, and is poised to serve as president for the 135th Rose Parade® and the 110th Rose Bowl Game® on January 1, 2025.

Volunteering with the Tournament since 1992, Ed was appointed chairman in 2006 and director in 2011. Through the years, he has served on and chaired many Tournament committees including Membership, Community Relations, Media Operations, Decorating Places, and Queen and Court. He is also a former Board Member of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Foundation.

“It is very fulfilling to be involved in an event that attracts people from all over the world,” he said. “It’s been one of the great joys of my life. My parents always volunteered through our parish, at our schools, and other activities, and the importance of volunteering was instilled in me at a young age. I simply joined the Tournament to help out and my love for the organization grew from there. Never in those early days did I think I would one day serve as president.”

In spite of the recent challenges that COVID-19 have imposed upon festivities, Ed’s biggest hope was that parade viewers still walked away with a sense of “Joy, inspiration and renewed optimism for the New Year!

The Tournament is a very unifying force that is so important at a time when Americans are divided on so many issues,” he said.

“As President for the 2025 Parade and Game, I look forward to continuing the many traditions associated with the festivities, and introducing them to new generations of Americans, including all those young men at Bosco Tech!”

To Carlos, who joined the Tournament two years ago and has committed his career to community engagement and social impact, the Tournament epitomizes good citizenship.

I am blessed beyond measure.”

Carlos encourages those considering getting involved to talk to a Tournament member and ask them about their experience. “It’s pretty incredible what our 935 members can accomplish together and with the support of our professional staff,” he said. “There’s a tremendous spirit and sense of giving back that’s very special.”

Shannon McConnell (Bosco Tech Trustee & Alumnus Parent) Chairperson, Decorating Places Committee For Tech Trustee Shannon McConnell, a 23year Tournament veteran and Chairperson of the Decorating Places Committee, the best part of the festivities was hearing a guest say that attending the parade was one of their "bucket list" items and that it exceeded anything they expected!

The parent of Tech alumnus Ian McConnell (Architecture & Construction Engineering ’19), Shannon will trade her current Tournament position as Chairperson of the Decorating Places Committee for next year’s role as Chairperson of Post Parade. Tඈඎඋඇൺආൾඇඍ ඈൿ Rඈඌൾඌ® (Cਏ਎ਔਉ਎ਕਅ਄) said, is to “assemble a rock star team of volunteers to put on the best after party known to Pasadena!”

In her 2022 Decorating Places role, Shannon, an Education and Outreach Specialist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, was the only woman on the TV corner crew strategically turning floats at the perpendicular Orange Grove/Colorado intersection. She even helped navigate the always-popular Cal Poly float, near to her heart because she and Ian, a junior at SLO, had helped decorate the Animation Award winner. Even Shannon’s husband, Scott, was involved, serving as the parade’s official timer who rode the route in the sound car.

Shannon, whose older son, Brian, recently graduated from the University of Utah, even wrote a helpful Rose Parade guide for the university’s football fans traveling to Pasadena to cheer on the team in the Rose Bowl Game.

Amidst all the hectic festivities, hard work, and celebration, Shannon most savors the moments walking around the Rose Bowl Stadium at 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day, in the momentary quiet, before the fun and festivity begins.

And what would Shannon tell those considering getting involved? “Be prepared to be tired, get no sleep, and have the time of your life!”

Memo Gutierrez (Automotive Technology ’83) Formation Area Committee Member If you were out on the parade route, you may have seen Tech President Memo Gutierrez (AU ’83) in his requisite white suit. Directing crowds in the early morning hours, Memo was responsible for securing the area where the parade is formed. He also helped manage turnstile operations in the parade’s security zone.

Becoming a ‘White Suiter’ was something Memo had considered for some time.

“I’d wanted to become involved in for a very long time,” Memo said. “It was an amazing experience and, now knowing what’s entailed, I plan to increase my participation next year. I felt incredible pride in our community, coming together in such a celebratory and cohesive way, and the fact that Tech alumni and families are instrumental in coordinating such efforts, that’s just made me extra proud of our Tech family and our school.”

Sඍ. Pൺඍඋංർ඄’ඌ Cൾඅൾൻඋൺඍංඈඇ ඈඇ Mൺඋർඁ 6— Rൺංඌൾ ൺ Pංඇඍ ඍඈ Sඎඉඉඈඋඍ Bඈඌർඈ Tൾർඁ They're back and better than ever! After a hiatus (for obvious reasons) in 2021, the Unfriendly Sons of St. Patrick—loyal friends of our own Bishop David O’Connell—are returning in 2022 to raise a pint, share great Irish fare, and swap stories, all in support of Bosco Tech. And you’re invited!

Make your way to the Tech campus on Sunday, March 6, from 5 to 9 p.m., and enjoy world-class entertainers, whiskey tasting, once-in-a-lifetime auction items, and the camaraderie blessed by the one and only Bishop David O'Connell. Trust us this is a shindig you don't want to miss!

The DBTI Band continued our tradition of volunteering at the 133rd Annual Tournament of Roses Parade. This is one of our biggest fundraisers each year and we were very happy to have been invited back to usher the grandstands and work parking while being able to enjoy the parade up close! We’d like to thank our dedicated musicians, their families, and Bosco parent volunteers who came out. We met at 4 a.m., and gave our time to help!
