Mൾඌඌൺ඀ൾ ൿඋඈආ ඍඁൾ Pඋൾඌංൽൾඇඍ Dear Bosco Tech family— On behalf of our faculty and staff, I want to wish you a happy and joyful 2020! Thank you for your support during 2019; we're looking forward to many more opportunities for growth in 2020.

In looking back over the last 12 months, I am reminded of what a great year 2019 was. It started off with the exciting launch of our new technology, Biological, Medical and Environmental Technology (BMET). Also new was the celebration of our Black & Gold Gala on campus for the first time, and the return of our annual report, a great vehicle for thanking our generous donors and sharing campus developments and student achievements.

As you know, the year ended on a very difficult note for the campus community as we mourned the sudden loss of our beloved school receptionist, Mrs. Espie Rocha. For many years, we were blessed with her presence, warm spirit, and friendship--she is greatly missed! The Rocha family would like to thank everyone for your prayers and support.

In December, we kicked off our 2019-20 Annual Fund. The response from alumni, parents and friends thus far has been terrific. We truly appreciate everyone's gifts and generosity. Annual Fund donations are accepted year-round. However, to be included in 2019-20 drive, please send gifts by June 30. Gifts can be made conveniently and securely through our website: https://www.boscotech.edu/giving/ In the coming weeks, we will participate in a WCEA/WASC school accreditation visit and are confident of positive feedback. The accreditation process is always a great opportunity to review, refine and implement improvements to our program. Read more about the visit on page 4 of this issue. We’re looking forward to many positive advancements in the year ahead, and we are so glad you and your family are a part of it.

Tൾർඁ Rൾൽ Cඋඈඌඌ Lൾൺൽൾඋඌ Vඈඅඎඇඍൾൾඋ ൺඍ Rඈඌൾ Pൺඋൺൽൾ Kudos to members of Bosco Tech's American Red Cross Club who rose before dawn on a chilly January 1 to help out at the 2020 Rose Parade. The student leaders were charged with first aid support, primarily keeping parade marching band members and guests safe and healthy during the annual festivities. Club President Alexis Mendoza (MSET-left photo, back row, right) assisted for a second year in a row on the first aid team and Vice President Jag Rathor (IDEA-right photo, standing on left) served on the Red Cross’s communications team. Great job, gentlemen!

NHS Mൺ඄ൾඌ Cඁඋංඌඍආൺඌ Bඋං඀ඁඍ ൿඈඋ Fൺඋආ Fൺආංඅංൾඌ During Christmas break, members of Bosco Tech’s National Honor Society, parents and chaperones traveled to Fresno for a festive holiday celebration with migrant farm workers and their families. The students brought new toys, clothing, toiletry items, and blankets to share during a massive holiday party they hosted.

The trip was a great success: Our students helped:  more than 100 families and 200 children at two different farmworker family camps  more than 30 men at two different mens camps  more than 15 seniors at a nursing home Special thanks to parents who drove the students up north for the long day: Mr. and Mrs. John Campa, Mr. Jaime Galvan, Mr. Algis Marciuska, Mr. and Mrs. Mitsuru Nakano, and Mrs. Alma Recinos. Very special thanks to the Campa family for hauling all of the toys for the children!

Living conditions at the farms are challenging with no heat and communal kitchens and bathrooms. The children blessed by our students’ kindness enjoyed the out-of-the-ordinary celebration and wonderful gifts.

“Events like this provide the types of experiences that have stayed with me, as a Bosco graduate, that you don't get at most schools, and that I want my son to take with him into the ‘real world,’” said Tech parent and alumnus Roberto Sanchez. Mr. Sanchez’ son, Jesse Lopez, a Tech junior, worked the event. “From a small act of kindness comes a ripple of compassion that goes on forever and is only amplified when those reached by the ripple pay it forward. I hope everyone had a great experience and thanks again to all who drove and helped in any way.”

Uඉർඈආංඇ඀ WCEA/WASC Aർർඋൾൽංඍൺඍංඈඇ Tൾൺආ Vංඌංඍ The faculty and staff of Bosco Tech wish to thank the parent and student volunteers who have participated in our accreditation self-study and report process. The actual accreditation site visit is scheduled for Sunday to Wednesday, March 8-11. At that time, a visiting review team representing the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA) will be on campus to inspect facilities, meet instructors and students, and review the detailed self-study report that many instructors and staff members worked so hard to compile.

Accreditation is a vital, on-going procedure, carried out by the non-biased WASC and WCEA governing bodies, in which college-preparatory high schools must participate, ensuring to the public that they are offering a quality, standard-based education to young people. The reflective process is a valuable opportunity to outline improvements and identify goals as we work to continually improve our curriculum and processes, ensuring that we are offering the best possible education for our students. We are confidently looking forward to renewing our full six-year accreditation.

As Bosco Tech’s 2020 Black & Gold Gala approaches, we’re highlighting one of this year’s honorees, Southern California Edison Southern California Edison, the largest subsidiary of Edison International (NYSE:EIX), is the primary provider of electricity for Southern California and one of the nation’s biggest electric utilities, serving nearly 15 million people.

Founded more than 125 years ago, SCE also operates a regulated gas and water utility that services Santa Catalina Island. Sister subsidiary Edison Energy is an independent portfolio of competitive businesses that provides commercial and industrial customers with energy management and procurement services.

Parent company Edison International is a distributor and generator of electric power, as well as a provider of energy services and technologies, including renewable energy. Edison International employs more than 12,500 people and generously gives back to the communities it serves; in 2018, the company contributed $20 million to non-profit organizations where they operate.

Led by President and CEO Kevin M. Payne, Rosemead-headquartered Southern California Edison has long been an exemplary neighbor and very generous supporter of Bosco Tech and its students and programs, and through the decades, scores of Tech alumni have worked for Edison in various engineering and management positions.

In 2017, William Ramos, then a senior in the Tech’s MSET program, was named an Edison International Scholar and presented a large scholarship by Edison International President and CEO Pedro J. Pizarro. William is currently studying chemistry at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.

Known for its philanthropic commitment to the communities in which it serves, Edison primarily provides funds for STEM education, scholarships and financial aid. Recent Tech projects to which the company has donated include the Green & Sustainable Technology Lab and the school’s FRC and FIRST competitive robotics programs. Since 2015, Edison has consistently provided scholarships for students to attend the Tech. Additionally, Edison’s procurement group recently voted to support Bosco Tech in the organization’s annual partnership round up, BBQ Throwdown Fundraiser. In total, Edison has given more than $321,000 to our school and its students since 1991!

“The ongoing support of both Southern California Edison and Edison International has been invaluable to Bosco Tech through the years,” said Tech President Memo Gutierrez. “We are grateful and pleased to be able to recognize the company and its employees as gala honorees for their genuine commitment to bettering communities in which they serve. Edison is a fine example of civic responsibility.”

Nൾඐ Eඇඋඈඅඅආൾඇඍ Rൾ඀ංඌඍඋൺඍංඈඇ Pඋඈർൾඌඌ— February 27, 2020, 1–8 p.m. (ONE DAY ONLY) Bosco Tech is implementing a new online enrollment process for incoming freshmen and re-enrolling 10th, 11th and 12th grade students.

An email with an invitation to fill out the online Enrollment Packet for the 2020- 2021 school year will be sent to your primary email.. This link will be sent out on Friday, Feb, 7, and needs to be completed by Thursday, Feb. 27, for your son to receive clearance to be enrolled for the 2020-2021 school year. Please be sure to review the list of required documents and read all terms and agreements to process your son’s packet.

For parents who would like to complete the process at Bosco Tech, we will be holding Enrollment Registration Day on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the library from 1 to 8 p.m. Staff and computers will be available to assist you in the online process. This day is only if you were unable to fill out the online Enrollment Packet without assistance. The Tuition Assistance application for the 2020-2021 school year is now available.

Applications for Tuition Assistance must be filed annually as assistance awards are valid for the year of application only. Assurance of an award cannot be guaranteed on an annual basis, and depends on many factors including available funding, timing of the application and need. We encourage families who require Tuition Assistance to apply as early as possible.

The online application process is now available. The deadline to submit the Tuition Assistance application is February 14, 2020.

In order to apply for Tuition Assistance, you must first be registered with FACTS. Please follow these steps: 1. Please click on the following link to start the Tuition Assistance application: https://online.factsmgt.com/signin/48613 2. If you are a new FACTS user, please select “Create a username & password” to begin. If you are an existing FACTS user, just enter your username and password.

3. Click on Start Tuition Assistance Application.

4. Select the appropriate school year.

5. Complete the steps as prompted.

Applicants will not be reviewed until all documentation is received. Please note that if your account is past due, your Tuition Assistance Application may be denied.

The Tuition Assistance Program is designed to provide funds to eligible students from institutional and private funding sources. In order to be eligible, applicants are required to submit a confidential application through FACTS and meet the following criteria:  Be a full-time student in good academic standing  Maintain, at every semester period, a minimum GPA of 2.500 and receive no D's and/or F's  Maintain good conduct  Demonstrate financial need  Satisfy any and all of the financial assistance requirements set forth by DBTI and/or our donors.

If applying for a Merit Scholarship only, do not apply through FACTS. Merit scholarships are awarded based upon your son’s academic grade point average (GPA). If he is eligible, an email with a merit application will be sent to the primary contact. Students must reapply each year.

Bosco Tech’s annual College Week, Feb. 10-14, offers practical advice from knowledgeable speakers about planning and preparation for post-secondary studies. This year’s schedule promises to be a valuable opportunity for our students.

“College week is a time dedicated to college presentation and information sessions to inspire our students as to the many opportunities that await them after graduation from Bosco Tech,” explained Director of Counseling Ray Chavez. “Guest speakers from several colleges are invited to discuss the college admission process and to inform students of some of the criteria used by colleges to determine the eligibility of student applicants. Students are able to have their personal questions answered by college personnel who are currently involved in the decision making process for college admissions.”

Tournament of Roses Our Bosco Tech Band and Band Boosters rang in the New Year by volunteering at the 131st Annual Tournament of Roses Parade, this year themed “The Power of Hope.”

This was our band’s third year working this iconic event as ushers and parking attendants to raise funds to travel to Boston to compete at the 2020 WorldStrides Heritage Festival in April.

The group’s day started at 4:30 a.m. on New Year’s day, and, although chilly, everyone enjoyed serving the Pasadena community which consisted of thousands of people from near and far. The band, band parents and even a few band alumni completed more than six hours of service that morning, while having an upclose view of the amazing floats and marching bands. It was a lot of fun!

Upcoming Events Now that the Rose Parade has come and gone, the band is back to work, practicing for their big competition, while also getting ready for their Jazz Concert, both of which will take place in April. The band dedicates several hours each week to be the best they can be, and their hard work shows when they perform.

If all goes as planned, the DBTI Band will travel to Boston on April 16 to compete. While on the four-day trip, they will take in the sights including visiting Harvard University, Fenway Park, the USS Constitution Museum, as well as the Museums of Science and Fine Arts…definitely must-see landmarks!

- Early pick up: Students must submit a written request from the parent/guardian to the Attendance Office stating that you will be picking up your son during the school day and the reason. Have your son turn it in by 7:55 a.m. on that day. See handbook for full details.

- Returning to campus: Please be sure to send a written, physical note with your son when he returns to the campus after an absence. The note should contain the reason for and date(s) of absence.

If the student was absent as a result of a physician’s visit and/or orders, please bring a doctor’s note stating the date the student may return and any restrictions involved.
